The Good Liar (2019)

A con man attempts to swindle a woman but his lies have to get more complicated as they near exposure.

Both the biggest selling point and one of the better elements of the movie are the main two actors who carry the drama well with subtle character revealing and mostly calm, hushed conversation. The balance between bizarre plots and domesticity creates tension while also allowing for the narrative to rest on occasion.

There was an inevitable twist but it wasn’t exactly unpredictable. One has to suspect it from the very premise of the film and even the smaller revelations get quite a few hints. Much of it was enjoyable enough for a single watch since it’s the journey and details that are engaging, although the twist isn’t satisfying enough to make it rewatchable.

Several parallels are made to World War 2 and even a number of the flashbacks take place at the time. This is well contrasted by the diverse cast, demonstrating the modern era where the Nazi ideology is far weaker and the world is moving on from them, but still taking the time to look back and exorcise the last remaining elements that have survived from their legacy, notably lies and systems of control.

Overall, the tone of the film was a very maudlin and depressing one, not quite high enough calibre drama to elevate it beyond the simple story. It opens as a set-up to a sad story, then brings in war elements, various traumatic back stories, and then ends by twisting it into an altogether downer of a conclusion, despite the final scenes which fail to leave it on a happier note.

I love that identity reveals between Jim Gordon and Bruce in fic almost always go the same way. Bruce goes "How did you know? Was it my acting?" and nine times out of ten Jim says something along the lines of "No, your acting was phenomenal. You gave yourself away by caring too much, Mr. Wayne."

Because the billionaire playboy cover was perfect and damn near airtight until one Bruce Wayne leapt in front of someone else during a holdup at a gala and "accidentally" got shot. No self-involved airhead with that much money riding on his life would ever -- ever -- let himself think of someone else in that moment.

Doing the same fucking thing to Hua Cheng when he's pretending to be Lang Ying (less shit talking, but he does mess with him).

Acting all Serious like he's gonna fight LQQ and then just tripping him with Ruoye lol

Dressing up as a lady bugs bunny style so he can hide.

And dressing up as both a bride and a pregnant woman to lure two different ghosts also lol

Tormenting the Venerable of Empty Words (kind of a 'I'm not trapped with you, you're trapped with me' thing)

He's the only one who can actually rile up Qi Rong

Pretending to be HC's puppet to hide among the ghosts

I just love that because he avoids fighting unless he has to, his solution is usually to dress up and lie all the time. No wonder Hua Cheng is in love he's honestly so funny.
