When Liam Cooper's older brother Ethan is killed in a hit-and-run, Liam has to not only learn to face the world without one of the people he loved the most, but also face the fading relationship with his two best friends. Feeling more alone and isolated than ever, Liam finds themself sharing time with Marcus, Ethan's best friend, and through Marcus, Liam finds the one person that seems to know exactly what they're going through, for the better, and the worse. This book is about grief. But it's also about why we live. Why we have to keep moving on, and why we should.
Mod opinion: I haven't read this book myself, but it sounds like an interesting exploration of grief.

The Ghosts We Keep by Mason Deaver

Perfect for fans of Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli, this book will rip your heart out before showing you how to heal and celebrate life in the process.
Everything happens for a reason.
At least that's what everyone keeps telling Liam Cooper after his older brother Ethan is killed in a hit-and-run.
Feeling more alone and isolated than ever, Liam has to not only learn to face the world without one of the people he loved the most, but also face the fading relationships of his two best friends in the process.
Soon, Liam finds themself spending time with Ethan's best friend, Marcus, who might just be the only person that seems to know exactly what they're going through-for better and for worse.
The Ghosts We Keep is an achingly honest portrayal of grief. But it is also about why we live. Why we have to keep moving on, and why we should.

(There will be spoilers of this book, so if you want to read The Ghosts We Keep, I suggest you ignore this post.)
Just finished the ghosts we keep so I’m just gonna let out my final thoughts:
(There will be spoilers of this book, so if you want to read The Ghosts We Keep, I suggest you ignore this post.)
- i love the way this book goes over grief. It’s very realistic in the healing process and I love that it shows that it’s not some linear path, but rather a pretty messy one.
- I love Marcus through and through, I feel like he’s a very important part of the book even though he didn’t stick with Liam, his impact was large. Not only did I love his contribution to the story, but I loved his character in general.
- the switch between times was a very nice component, I’m glad that over time we as readers could see exactly how he used to be.
- near the end I did get a bit confused in some bits, mainly when they said Marcus moved away and never spoke to him but looking back it made sense, maybe that was just my little bit of confusion with the timeline
- The parts with Vanessa and Joel really added to the book, and I’m glad they were in it because I feel like it’s important sometimes to know that you can have friends who have helped you and done good for you, but who are still very toxic and not good for you.
- I think it’s also important to note- despite mentioning romance here and there, this is not a romance book, it’s a book about trauma and healing. (I’m honestly just saying this because the post I originally found this book in was saying it was a romance story)

The Ghosts We Keep
Mason Deaver
Date Finished: May 26, 2022
4.5/5
The Ghosts We Keep is a gut-wrenching, beautifully written, story about dealing with grief, the loss of a loved one, and the things we learn through it. The characters aren't perfect, and sometimes are hard to like, but I think that adds to how real the story feels, and in a way made me love them even more. The side characters are all so well fleshed out and have their own personalities and flaws wonderfully balanced, their perspectives and lives have meaning, even though the story isn’t from their perspective or about them
Minor Spoilers
I loved that the story didn’t have a cut and dry, “happy” ending, instead, it left me feeling like this was a chapter in a larger story, which I think speaks to Deaver’s writing and connections to the themes.
End Spoilers The scenes regarding Self-harm and suicidal ideation, are incredibly realistically written, and due to this fact there were a few moments in chapters that I had to skim/skip over, but they also did not feel like the book was becoming about, or glorifying them as so many other stories tend to do. This book was incredible, and if it was more to my personal tastes, would likely have ended up with a 5/5. I once again cannot wait to see what Mason Deaver has in store for his next book.

"The important thing was that I did wake up. I'd remember Ethan. I'd still love him, whether he was here or not. Because he would always be here with me, no matter what happened. He was a ghost I'd keep with me for the rest of my life." - The Ghosts We Keep by Mason Deaver

I love Mason Deaver’s I Wish You All The Best, but I’ve gotta say, The Ghosts We Keep is by far their best work in my opinion. I don’t think I’ve cried that hard at a book since They Both Die At The End.

Prompt 283
Now Jason would like it known that there was no mpreg situation going on. He isn’t even sure where people got that idea in the first place. Sure, he had taken a few Cores from the goons-in-white who had dared to set up in his turf.
And sure maybe the excess energy from the pit (no wonder he’d been so irritable) was what said baby halfas (Okay, so they’re half human? Alright) had used to reform. And maybe the oldest is visibly less than a year old.
But there Was No Mpreg Situation! He is this close to shooting someone! It was annoying (and slightly amusing) when it was just his goons, but now the Bats have seemingly got it in their heads! Dear Gotham it’s a good thing he’s not planning on like, ever revealing who he is because he would never be able to live this rumor down.
[Winged Ghosts Au too, that seems to be getting lost in reblogs when it's just in the tags lol]
