[ID: The first image is a digital sketch of Y/N holding Sea Butterfly!Sun in a large fishing net. Y/N stands to the right of Sun wearing a wetsuit. They are facing slightly right, with their right hand on their hip and the other hand supporting the handle of the net that rests over their shoulder. They are looking back at Sun with an amused smirk. To the left of them, Sun is slightly larger than human-sized. His whole body is inside the net besides his arms and head which are leaning onto the handle of the net. The net bends with his weight, and his crossed arms cradle his head as he looks at Y/N with an amused smile. The lineart is orange and the background is white. The artist’s signature in the bottom left follows the curve of the net and reads, “MOCHA ILLUSTRATES”.  The second image is a digital sketch of Y/N holding Firefly Squid!Moon in a large fishing net. Y/N stands to the left of Moon wearing a wetsuit. They are facing slightly left and are looking down curiously at Moon in the net. They have their hands up as they hoist the handle of the net above their head to hold Moon up. To their right, Moon is slightly larger than human-sized. He is upside and his tentacles are spilling out over the rim of the net. His arms are cradling his head as he looks up at Y/N with an annoyed expression. The lineart is blue and the background is white. The artist's signature in the bottom right follows the curve of the net and reads, “MOCHA ILLUSTRATES”. END ID.]

LIGHTNING BUGS
Something Joel found out quickly about Ellie was that finding a way to actually get her to lie down and rest was not easy.
Sure, sometimes there were days where their traveling had been long and exhausting, and she was too tired to stay up. She would crash onto her sleeping bag the moment it was out and would curl up in a small ball the way she always did, mumbling a soft, “goodnight, old man,” if she was awake enough. If they were lucky, she would start softly snoring almost immediately.
Tonight was not one of those nights.
“Come on, Ellie,” Joel sighed from where he was sitting beside their bags. She’d dropped her backpack and had immediately gone to pick at the rocks by the trees to find hidden insects. “It’s late. We need to sleep if we’re goin’ to be walkin’ all day tomorrow.”
“Keep telling me what to do and I’ll put a centipede in your bed,” she called back, waving the rock in her hand around threateningly. He was not intimidated.
“Ellie.”
She groaned but dropped the rock, trudging over to him, a purposefully sulky look on her face, as if the more pathetic she looked the more likely he was to let her play with the spiders before bed. He was afraid she was getting close to figuring out sad eyes worked on him.
He began to lie his sleeping bag down, and she copied him, huffing and sighing the entire time. He ignored her, because he knew those kinds of tricks well.
“I’m not even tired, you know,” she grumbled after it became clear that he wasn’t going to ask her what was wrong. “I could stay up for a lot longer.”
And then be tired the entire day tomorrow, he very generously did not add. Instead, he said, “I know. But I’m tired, you little shit, and I’d prefer not to worry about you gettin’ a spider bite in the middle of the night while I’m tryin’ to sleep.” Spider bites were not what he was worried about, but she didn’t have to know that. Let her keep her obliviousness to the world’s true dangers for a little while longer.
“Of course,” she said, rolling her eyes and flopping down onto her sleeping bag. “You’re old and you need your old person sleep. How could I forget?”
“These jokes about my age just keep gettin’ funnier and funnier, you know.” She stuck her tongue out at him and grinned, and he stifled own smile at how easy it had been to get her to stop pouting.
He began to shuffle through his bag to find food, ignoring how dark it was. The sun had already begun to set, and it wouldn’t be long until it was pitch black, but they hadn’t eaten yet and Joel didn’t want Ellie to go to bed hungry. His brows furrowed as his hands continued to dig through his pack yet found nothing, and he wondered with a small stab of panic if, somehow, they’d run out of food and he hadn’t noticed.
Behind him, Ellie sprung up suddenly, and he whirled around as she cried out, “Joel!” He was on his feet immediately, gun in hand, eyes scouting for the danger.
“What’s wrong? What is it?” He asked, taking a step in front of her, gun lifted and ready to shoot.
“I-I don’t know,” she stuttered out. “I saw, like, a spark. Like someone was trying to set something on fire, or whatever. I don’t see it anymore, though…”
Frowning, Joel kept the gun in position, eyes searching the stretching shadows of the forest, eyes straining to see behind the trees. He couldn’t see anything, and just as he was about to call a possible false alarm, Ellie jumped again.
“Right there! It happened again!” She exclaimed, reaching out to grab his arm, but he relaxed, because he had seen it this time, too. He couldn’t help but chuckle a little, though, and she shot him a look. “What?”
“Ain’t nothin’ to worry ‘bout,” he reassured her, putting his gun down. “No danger.”
“But I saw it,” she protested. “I did.”
“I believe you—I saw it too. It’s just lightnin’ bugs, though. See?” He nodded in the direction of a cluster of bushes where a couple more tiny “sparks” flashed. “Nothin’ bad, just a couple of flashy bugs.”
“Flashy bugs?” She looked skeptical, clearly unsure if he was messing with her or not.
“Mhm.” He sat down again, wanting to make it sure and clear that there wasn’t anything to be afraid of. “Just some weird bugs that have some sorta glowin’ things under their wings that light up.”
“Whoa,” she breathed, all former worry forgotten. “That’s so cool. Do you think I could catch one?”
He frowned. “Well…it’s entirely possible. People Before used to catch ‘em and stuff, but you still need to sl—”
Before Joel could even think to finish his sentence, Ellie was darting towards the bushes, grinning madly, and he sighed. He’d forgotten how exhausting kids were, but he didn’t try to call her back. There was no stopping her now, unfortunately.
It had gotten significantly more dark, so the flashes were easier to see, and after a couple of first failed attempts and an accidental murder when Ellie clapped her hands together instead of cupping them together to catch a flying one (R.I.P., lighting bug. Ellie had been very guilty afterwards), she finally managed to scoop one off of the grass. Clasping it in her hands gently, making sure there was space in between the two hands since she’d learned her lesson after the first bug murder, she ran back over to him, grin wider than he’d ever seen it.
“Look!” She cried, unclasping her hands and proudly presenting the bright bug to him, “I caught one!” Sure enough, there was a little lighting bug scurrying across her palm, looking disoriented at the fact it was no longer peacefully sitting on a piece of grass like it had been moments before.
This time, Joel couldn’t help the smile that twitched at the corners of his mouth. “You did,” he acknowledged. “Nice job, kid. Now how ‘bout—”
“Hold it!” She demanded, thrusting her hands out, and it was a miracle the bug was still on there. When he gave her an I’m not doing that look, she merely gave him a yes you fucking are look back. Heaving a sigh, he held out his hand and she beamed, gently placing the little bug into his palm. It was almost comical, how small the bug was compared to his hand, but he let it stay on for Ellie’s sake as she watched it happily, as if she’d handed him a trophy rather than an insect that would probably be dead in less than a week, if she didn’t accidentally crush it herself.
“I’m naming that one Olivia,” she declared. “Keep her safe, Joel.” Before he could even process her words, she was darting off again, searching the grass and sky for more lighting bugs to capture.
He glanced down exasperatedly at Olivia, still wandering confusedly across his skin. “We’re really in for it now, aren’t we?” He sighed, then gently closed his hand, careful to make sure he didn’t squish the bug, since Ellie would be devastated if he did.
The girl spent the next thirty minutes collecting lighting bugs, as the sun set and the sky above them became dark, casting a shadow down on earth and making it almost impossible to see. Every once and a while he couldn’t make her out in the darkness and he panicked, but there was no need, because every time he worried he was quickly reassured by Ellie charging towards him, new victim in hand. By the end of the night, he had at least twenty in his hands, acting as her bug collecting jar as she ran off to find more.
They all had names, of course. Olivia, Andy, Stefan, Ellie Junior, Joel Junior, Ozzie, Little Fuck, Christopher, Will Livingston 2.0—all of them got the honor of having names, although who was who, Joel had no idea (what he did know was that Christopher had definitely escaped the moment Ellie had placed him in his hands. Sorry, Ellie. Christopher belonged to the night now).
It wasn’t until Ellie caught five at once and tried to put them all into his already-crowded hands (yes, both hands now, because one had not been enough to contain Christopher) that he finally put a halt to the mass lightning bug imprisonment.
“But Joel,” she whined when he opened his hands and let them all free. Some shot off immediately, while others stayed, clearly already used to their new life in captivity. He was pretty sure one of the four left meandering around was Olivia. “There are so many of them to catch!”
“Sorry to burst your bubble, but you can’t catch all of ‘em, kid,” he told her. She frowned and looked down at the bugs in her hands. “Plus, we gotta get movin’ early tomorrow. You need rest, and I’m sure those poor bugs do, too.”
Ellie sighed reluctantly, and that’s how he knew she was getting tired, the way she didn’t put up more of a fight. “I guess you’re right. Bye, Johnny, Johnny Junior, Johnny the Third, Johnny the Forth and Johnny the Fifth.” The bugs gradually flew off and she caught his baffled look. “What? You didn’t give me enough time to name them all!”
“Right.” He rolled his eyes to hide his amused smile. “Now sit down and try to go to sleep, you little shit.”
“So mean to me,” she grumbled, the uplifted corner of her mouth showing she wasn’t actually upset as she clambered into her sleeping bag, curling up like she always did.
Joel slid into his own, staring up at the treetops and the stars above him, waiting for the inevitable question. Sure enough—
“Joel?”
“Mhm?”
“They’re called fireflies too, right?”
“Yeah, I s’pose some people call ‘em fireflies.”
“Hm.” There was only a moment of peace before she spoke up again. “I think I like these fireflies better than the people ones.”
He laughed at that. “Yeah. Me too, kid. Me too.”

I lived in America for a couple years and I was always in awe that we could open our back door and they were just there. All the time!!

i love baby toys and adult pacifiers sm- like not even just in the age regression way. they’re just so fun and/or comforting, as well as really nice sensory-wise
anyway: all comfort items are valid! i am not infantilizing other autistic people by liking baby toys and pacifiers, nor am i hurting anyone by using them
(sorry the wording is a bit weird my head hurts /nav)

i really hope there isn't a resurgence of terrible 'the fireflies wouldn't be able to make a cure out of ellie so joel was completely justified in saving her' takes now that hbo's the last of us had ended its first season because that has been the bane of my existence for years now. people have been making elaborate analysis about the probabilities of a vaccine working, or trying to figure out if the logistics of distributing it in a post-apocalyptic world would even allow it, or debating the morality of the fireflies in how they were willing to kill a teenage girl for the sake of a scientific experiment without giving her a choice on the matter, and it's like. yeah, all of that is debatable, but it isn't the fucking point AT ALL because it's not what joel was even remotely thinking about when he killed them! he wasn't weighing pros and cons and making the most logical choice. the whole point is that even if the fireflies had been the most ethical and competent scientists in the world, even if they could've had an instant infinite batch of vaccines for every person in the planet ready, he still would have always, always chosen ellie before all of that, because having ellie as his daughter is what makes the world worth living for him

Spy had the sudden, childish impulse to braid daisies into that hair [...] Her fingers went to the rose at her lapel. // There was a firefly resting on her palm. It tickled, warm and faint on her hand, and Spy smiled at it a while.

So with the fact that Firefly's Solo Game of Bridge Fire became a Firebug tag team situation in the Arkham Files, does anyone wanna hear Killer Moth's body horror adventure prior to the fic?

Hmm I respect people doing contests excluding fandoms they're very uncomfortable with or don't want to be seen as promoting like it's their contest that's fine, but "shitty fandoms" or "creator is a bad person" explain about as much as "standard DNI" or "freaks DNI" I don't know you I don't know what you think is shitty or bad
