Forbidden Colors
Chapter 2
Iris makes it back home after the First Date. She goes up the stairs, dodging the creaky ones, and enters her room. Locking the door, Iris slides down to her specimen, crying.
“Why didn’t I see colors when Casper kissed me? What’s wrong with me? He’s my soulmate. The government is never wrong about our soulmates.”
Getting off the floor, she wipes away tears and makeup. After a couple of minutes of struggling, the dress is off, and her pajamas are on. Iris lies on her bed and cuddles her specimen, drifting to sleep as exhaustion kicks in.
The next day, Iris gets ready for school. She puts on her uniform, a basic skirt, and button-up, and puts the specimen back in his cage. The house is quiet, fueling Iris’s thoughts.
‘Someone’s going to find out. Everyone will see through me and know I can’t see colors.’ Iris eats breakfast, washes her dishes, and packs up lunch. With her specimen in hand, she makes her way to the school.
The classes fly by until a new course, ‘Introduction to Colors and the New World Around You.’ After every soulmate ceremony, the school starts this program, a class only for seniors. Iris thought this class would be a breeze, but her total lack of colors seems to cause a problem. After struggling through the course, Iris gets up from her desk and meets up with her friends outside for lunch.
“So, how did everyone’s First Date go?” Penelope asks.
All the girls answer with varying degrees of amazement, and Iris feels guilty. Penelope notices,
“Iris? Your date?”
“Oh, it went well. Casper and I had an excellent time.” Iris smiled. Penelope ignores the weak smile, and grabs Iris’s hand, ignoring how she tenses up,
“You are so lucky to get Casper! All the girls in Fieldbrooks want him, except me, of course. They just drool over him with his shiny hair and those cheekbones.”
Iris nods along as she drowns out the conversation. She notices some tree leaves shake out of the corner of her eye. A leaf falls, but nothing out of the ordinary.
On her way home from school, Iris’s specimen breaks loose and runs off into the forest. Amidst her internal screaming, Iris sprints off after her specimen, past the boundary lines.
“Hey! Get back here!” Iris stops suddenly when she sees her specimen with a girl.
‘Who is this? Why are they out here?’ While Iris is thinking, the girl speaks up.
“Is this your cat?”
Iris’s brows furrow, “Cat? I don’t understand what that is, but if you mean is that my specimen, then yes, and I would like him back.”
The girl smiles, and her teeth show a little. "And what will I get as a reward, princess?”
Iris sputters and can feel the heat creeping up her neck. "Nothing! I’m not your princess either!”
The girl tilts her head, “I never said you were mine, sweetheart.”
The heat creeping up Iris’s neck has now engulfed her entire face.
“Give me back my specimen!”
“Alright.”
As the girl hands Iris her specimen, Iris notices a familiar patch, the Rebel eagle patch. The girl follows Iris’s gaze, and her eyes widen.
Iris jolts out of shock first. “You’re a Rebel!”
Adrenaline kicks in, and Iris kicks the girl in the shin. Iris runs as fast as she can with her specimen in her arms. She runs until her lungs burn. Iris makes it home and sneaks into her room, hoping her parents don’t notice her. Finally calming down, Iris checks she has everything, only to realize she’s missing her identification card.
‘Fuck.’ Taking a few deep breaths, ‘Okay, Iris, think. We go to school and pretend the identification card is on us. When school is out, we run and convince the rebel to give up the card. So easy.’ Pulling her ponytail out with a groan of annoyance, Iris sits at her desk and pulls some homework out of her bag. Thoughts drift to her earlier conversation with the rebel.

Forbidden Colors
Chapter 1
It’s the beginning of spring which is selection day for the residents of Euphoria. Iris sat on the porch, sick from her nerves.
'Who was her soulmate? Everyone in town speculated that Casper, her best friend since middle school, was going to be her soulmate. How lucky.' Iris leans back onto the porch to get comfortable and gives her specimen a scratch.
“We’re in for it now, huh, buddy?” Inhale and exhale as her mother taught her. Butterflies still dancing around in her stomach, Iris stands up and heads to her room to prepare for the Ceremony. Mother’s ceremonial dress is tight on her, but it’ll make do. Iris applies some light makeup as her mother twists her hair into a single braid.
“How are you feeling, honey?” Iris glances up at her mother through her mirror.
“Sick to my stomach. Is this how you felt during your selection day?”
Mother chuckles and rubs Iris’s back. "I think we all feel nervous during our selection day, Iris. I certainly was.”
The Ceremony is beautiful. Trees framed the land and flowers painted the field. The girls are sitting on the right. She spots Casper fiddling with his shirt hem, the nervousness coming off him in waves.
“May I have your attention everyone…” The ceremony begins as the announcer calls the names of the girls and then their soulmates.
‘Casper’s name hasn’t been picked for any of the other girls.’ Iris bites her lip.
Then the announcer calls on Iris. Her hands clam up, and Iris can feel herself tremble.
“Iris Lockhearst, we are happy to announce your soulmate is Casper Perthshire. May you both please come up to the stage to commence your soulmate bond?”
Cold. She feels so cold, like a bucket of icy water got dumped onto her. Iris glances over to Casper to see him gasping and blushing. They stand and go to the stage to shake hands with the announcer and president, Harold Trixton, and bow to one another.
“As a tradition, all soulmates will go out together and kiss for the colors to appear.”
Iris and Casper walk around for a while before going to a restaurant. They order their food and drinks and find a secluded spot. Casper smirks at her.
“So, were you expecting it to be me?”
“I suppose I was. Everyone was speculating you would be my soulmate. We’ve known each other since we were kids.”
Casper laughs and leans closer. “That’s fair. I’m glad it’s you, Iris”
Iris’s eyes widen and she sips her drink, Casper's eyes following the sudden movement. Their food arrives, and the server congratulates them. While they eat, Iris overhears other customers' gossip.
“That town that got destroyed by the Rebels?”
“Yes, Windbrooks. I’m thinking that the officer with that facial scar was there when those filthy Rebels attacked.”
Casper scoffs. “They’re gonna get into serious trouble with President Trixton for talking about that town.”
Shifting in her seat, Iris responds, “It’s not like the place really existed, right?” Casper shrugs.
After dinner, the duo sits in the park. The night air is cool against Iris’s face, and she exhales, causing some loose hairs to straggle around.
“Penelope is going to get a kick out of us being soulmates. I swear she’s wanted us to get together for as long as I can remember.”
Casper smiles. "Me too. I’ve liked you for so long.”
“Oh. Uh, me too.”
Casper stands up, dusts himself off, and helps Iris up. Eyes softening, he leans in to kiss her. Iris lets it happen and, as they pull apart, Casper looks amazed.
“Wow. The colors are beautiful, don’t you agree?”
Iris lies through her teeth “Stunning.”

Ron DeSantis just kidnapped a 13-year old boy.
Earlier this evening, at around 7 PM CT U.S., Rebekah Jones (notably one of DeSantis’ biggest political enemies right now) underwent a raid on her home by state police.
Guns were pointed in the face of her 13-year old son, Jack. They arrested him under the charges of digital terrorism and “on state orders.”
They are refusing to let him go home and they are refusing to let Jones see him.
These are her screenshots recounting the incident from earlier tonight. They were taken at 10:23 PM CT U.S.

Reminder that Zuckerberg actively lobbied with Republican PR firms to make TikTok illegal because he couldn't compete with it.
Reminder that for all it's faults TikTok has brought tons of awareness to important issues that barely got any coverage until they blew up on TikTok, and more that still barely got any mainstream coverage even after they did.
Reminder that TikTok has become the largest and easiest place for people to come together and organize, and has 150 million active users in the US.
Reminder that congress, especially conservatives, stand to gain a lot by banning it, because it means less people will hear about all the problematic (fascist) shit they're trying to pass, such as the 300+ anti-trans bills, the bills seeking to make abortion a felony punishable by death, or how they're trying to remove the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). They also get to 'look tough' against China.
Reminder that claims of concerns over data privacy are bullshit, because China could literally just buy our data if they wanted it. Tech companies just like and including Facebook collect and sell our data all the time. China wouldn't need to build an app to get it.
Reminder that banning TikTok sets a precedent that Congress could come for literally any other social media they deem 'a threat' and ban that too. Yes, even your personal favorite one.
Reminder that we should care about this and instead of saying "Good Riddance TikTok!" we should be actively trying to stop this violation of free speech and stop handing more power to fascists just because we personally don't like a thing or think it's cringe. This is bigger than your personal tastes.
Please sign this letter from the ACLU to your members of Congress and urge them to listen. There's also a hearing this Thursday on March 23rd at 10am EST in DC where the TikTok CEO will be testifying before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The hearing will be open to the public and will also be live streamed online.
I don't care if you hate TikTok or think it's "cringe." If you all actually hate Facebook and fascists as much as you say you do, then you won't stand for letting them win this fight to ban it.
