This is also the first post for Titanic Month, hope you guys like it!

Henry Wilde, while ceased to be chief officer of RMS Olympic, was waiting for his next assignment. He was to command SS Cymric, yet unfortunately, the coal strike happened, so he was to be assigned to another ship…

“[…] I am awfully disappointed to find that all the arrangements for my taking command of the “Cymric” this time are altered, due to this coal strike and having to cancel so many of the ships and sailings. […] I am now going to join the “Titanic” for a time until some other ship turns up for me. […]”

According to his letters, as earliest as 30th March, he was aware that he would be on RMS Titanic. He was pretty much ready for captaincy, having been as chief officer[a] since 1906 and briefly commanded the Mersey and SS Zeeland in 1908 and 1910 respectively. At the same time, Olympic’s sister ship, Titanic, was to be in her maiden voyage on 10th April, 1912, and she required around 850 tonnes of coal a day. So, as there was a lack of coal due to the coal strikes, White Star Line has to transfer coal from other ships in the fleet to Titanic in order to have her sail as scheduled. Unfortunately, Cymric, the ship that Wilde was to command was one of the ships that had to be laid up, thus he was assigned to another ship. As for Wilde himself, he was to visit his family in Walton, Liverpool, yet this has somehow thrashed his plans… Now he is in Southampton, waiting for the decision from White Star Line for his next assignment—still at least, he was aware that he was to be onboard the brand new sister ship of Olympic, though things are not confirmed officially yet.

So, was he really a last-minute addition as everyone may believe? Officially, he signed on the Titanic on a day before sailing (9th April). Nevertheless, according to his letters, he was already onboard of the ship as early as the Easter weekend of 1912 to assist everyone:

“[…] I have been kept very busy on board all day on Good Friday and again today Sunday with the crew getting the ship ready. She is very far behind to sail on Wednesday. […]”

Hence, in terms of the date of Wilde signing onto Titanic, it seemed to be a last minute decision. However, Wilde was already aware of being transferred to Olympic’s sister ship since 30th March, and he was even onboard to assist everyone throughout the Easter weekend to make sure that Titanic is sailing as scheduled. So, it seems like White Star Line was making use of the fact that Wilde, himself a very competent officer and probably the most promising of all (like, he is just half a year older than 1st Officer Murdoch who had been stuck on this position for a while), was idle due to the coal strikes and they decided to put him on the maiden voyage of Titanic because maybe they thought it was better than nothing for Wilde (being part of the staff on the maiden voyage seems to be quite a thing—I mean you got a pic taken after this like what they did for Olympic last year). Also, Murdoch, the original chief officer, had not been chief officer before and White Star Line wanted a better choice for Titanic’s maiden voyage just as Olympic’s (Joseph Evans, the chief officer on Olympic’s maiden voyage[b], had been chief officer on another ship for a while—think is one of the Big 4), and it happened that Wilde was idle due to the coal strikes so he’s assigned to Titanic. Of course, these are just my own speculations.

Wilde’s assignment was only for Titanic’s maiden voyage. Nevertheless, the temporary demotion of Murdoch and Lightoller (to 1st Officer and 2nd Officer respectively) has disappointed both.

Did he really have a bad feeling on the ship?

Interestingly, in the same letter that I have just mentioned, we can first see him commenting Titanic being “an improvement on the Olympic in many respect and is a wonderful ship.” He also mentioned similar comments on the ship in later letters which were sent from Cohn (Queenstown). Nevertheless, it is common knowledge that Wilde had written another letter to his sister, Ada, where he said:

“I still don't like this ship... I have a queer feeling about it."

This letter was mentioned and quoted in “The Maiden Voyage” by Geoffrey Marcus who had talked to surviving friends of Wilde in 1950s. While it was true that Wilde himself was disappointed over this appointment (as expressed in his letter to his sister in-law[c]), based on the letters that are available to us, the above quote has a very different tone: in the letters, Wilde was positive about the ship and mentioned Titanic “being an improvement of Olympic” multiple times, nevertheless the quote above was contradictory to that. However, the original letter to his sister is presumably in private collection, had it existed, so we would not know the context of the quote until we have the chance to read it[d].

Additional notes:

[a] The Chief Officer was the captain’s second-in-command until the introduction of the Assistant Captain/Staff Captain position after the sinking of Titanic. Both White Star Line and Cunard Line had installed such position, given that Olympic had a cabin for assistant captain after her refit and Lusitania had a staff captain by the time of her sinking.

[b] A lot of people thought this picture below was the officers of Titanic (as tagged under the picture) but it was actually a picture of the officers of Olympic after her maiden voyage. The guy who was wearing the chief officer uniform (3 stripes) was Joseph Evans, who was later replaced by Wilde. The only 3 who were actually on Titanic are: Captain Smith (4 stripes), 1st Officer Murdoch (2 stripes) and Chief Purser McElroy (wearing a different type of collar)

[d] Although a lot of Wilde’s letters have been auctioned, since its discovery in 2012 (his family did not throw them away, which is great for historical research), only 28 of all his letters are published (in Mike Beatty’s “Sincerely Harry”) as Beatty was only able to acquire 28 of all the letters. Sadly, the letter to his sister was not one of them and is presumably in private collection, had it existed.

Konstantin Innokentyevich Pomerantsev (March 13 [30], 1884, Krasnoyarsk - May 21, 1945, Kursk) - Russian and Soviet painter, sculptor, architect. Pomerantsev came from an official's family. In 1893-1897 he studied at the Krasnoyarsk Men's Gymnasium. In 1900, the Pomerantsev family moved to the Verkholensky district of the Irkutsk province, but after the death of his father in 1906, the whole large family moved to Irkutsk, where Pomerantsev, starting in 1902, studied at the Irkutsk Mining School, from which he graduated in 1907. In 1906-1907 he studied in the classes of drawing and painting A. F. Lytnev, and in 1908-1910 Pomerantsev studied painting in Moscow at the art school F. I. Rerberg and at the same time he took sculpture lessons from A. S. Golubkina. In 1910, Pomerantsev returned to Irkutsk and joined the Control of the Trans-Baikal Railway as an assistant controller, where he remained until 1920. Pomerantsev became the founder (in 1910) and head of the Irkutsk Society of Artists, which he headed until 1923 (when the society was reorganized). In 1920-1925 he worked first as the 2nd, then the 1st curator of the artistic and historical department (picture gallery) of the regional museum. He taught in the art studio at the Political Department of the 5th Army (1920-1922). In 1920-1923 he headed the Irkutsk Society of Artists, until in 1923 it was liquidated as a result of the reorganization of creative associations into a single union. In January 1920, after the victory over the White Army, Pomerantsev led a team of artists to decorate the city for the solemn meeting of units of the 5th Army, which took place on March 10, 1920. In 1926, Pomerantsev was invited by the Mongolian government to Ulaanbaatar to decorate the Mongolian capital, in particular to create a monument to Sukhe-Bator, which was installed on the central square of Ulaanbaatar in 1930, as well as to create a museum of the Mongolian Revolution. In total, Pomerantsev lived in Mongolia for 13 years. More than 350 paintings, sketches, drawings, sketches of Pomerantsev are stored in the Mongolian Theater Museum (in the city of Ulaanbaatar).

135 years ago, on March 12 (24), 1888, Viktor Eduardovich Kingisepp was born — a professional Bolshevik revolutionary of Russia and Estonia, and one of the main organizers of the banned Communist Party of Estonia.

In the revolutionary movement since 1905, member of the RSDLP(b) since 1906. From 1907–1914 he conducted party work in St. Petersburg, Tallinn; participated in the publication of the newspaper “Kiyr” (“Luch”) in 1913–1914, maintained contact with the Russian Bureau of the Central Committee of the RSDLP, with the Bolshevik faction of the 4th State Duma.

He was repressed several times. In 1914 he was arrested and exiled to Tver, then to Kazan. In 1916 — on the Caucasian front.

After the February bourgeois-democratic revolution he returned to Petrograd; from the beginning of June in Tallinn, one of the leaders of the Bolshevik organization of Estonia. From October 22 (November 4), 1917, deputy chairman of the Estland Regional Revolutionary Committee, organized the Red Guard. From October 26 (November 8), 1917, a member of the executive committee of the soviets of the Estonian region. From March 1918 he worked in Moscow in the Supreme Revolutionary Tribunal and in the Cheka; member of the special commission of inquiry on the case of the rebellion of the Left Socialist-Revolutionaries, investigator in the case of the Lockhart spy organization.

In March 1918, at the 4th All-Russian Congress of Soviets, he was elected a member of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. From November 1918 he led the Communist Party of Estonia. At the 1st (1920) and 2nd (1921) congresses of the Communist Party of Estonia he was elected a member of the Central Committee and a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee, created underground printing houses, published the newspaper “Communist”.

On May 3, 1922, Kingisepp was arrested by the authorities of bourgeois Estonia. The Soviet embassy offered to exchange him for two arrested counter-revolutionaries. The Estonians refused, and literally on the same day, Kingisepp, after being tortured and staged a court-martial, was executed.

The shooting took place on a deserted coast. The last words of the Bolshevik sounded exactly as one would expect from a real communist: “Long live Soviet Estonia!”

This stamp was issued on the 1st of May in 1952, the centenary year of the birth of Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852 - 1934). He was was a Spanish neuroscientist, pathologist, and histologist who specialised in neuroanatomy and the workings of the central nervous system. He and Camillo Golgi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1906. Ramón y Cajal was the first person of Spanish origin to win a scientific Nobel Prize. His original investigations of the microscopic structure of the brain made him a pioneer of modern neuroscience. Hundreds of his drawings illustrating the arborizations ("tree growing") of brain cells are still in use, since the mid-20th century, for educational and training purposes.

Hubert Anton Casimir Dilger was born to Dr. Eduard and Emmeline Duerr Dilger on March 5, 1836, in the village of Eugen, Germany. His early education as a cadet in the military academies led to service as lieutenant in the Grand Duke of Baden’s Horse Artillery, primarily at the garrisons of Karlsruhe and Rastatt, where he developed unique and unconventional artillery tactics emphasizing close support for infantry, rapid mobility, and accuracy and speed of fire. Dilger secured a leave of absence from the Duchy and traveled to America offering his services to the Union, first commanding 1st Battalion, Virginia Light Artillery under Major General John C. Frémont and later Battery “I,” 1st Ohio Artillery in Major General Franz Sigel’s 1st Army Corps, Army of Virginia. Dilger was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863. In the Western Theater, Dilger’s accuracy and speed with his guns became legendary. Nicknamed “Leatherbreeches” due to his preference for buckskin trousers, the dashing and handsome young man became a popular personality, and a life-long friend of Adolph Metzner. Dilger purchased property near Front Royal, Virginia, and lived out his life as a farmer. He died on May 4, 1911, and was buried at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington D. C., beside his wife who passed in 1906.

(The far more detailed version of this is on FB) Good afternoon, folks. It's time for another New York Harbor Defense Happy Birthday! We would like to honor the 181st Birthday of Colonel Charles James Mills, who was born today on (Fri) Jan 8th, 1841 in Boston, MA. (Pic 1) Charles graduated from Harvard in 1840, before attending the precursor to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a study in Engineering. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he immediately made an effort to join the service as an Officer. August 14th, 1862, age 21, he found himself as a Second Lieutenant in Company I of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Corps. One of his fellow officers in the Regiment was 25 year old Robert Gould Shaw who would go on to command the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (Colored). Both men were wounded at Antietam a month later. Sent home, Mills was medically discharged before joining the 56th MA Infantry. He served at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Bethesda Church, and Petersburg. On the staff of Major General Andrew A. Humphreys, the 2nd Corps Commander, he was made Brevet Colonel on Mar 30th 1865. The next day, he was killed at the Battle Of Hatcher's Run, VA 10 days before the war ended on April 9th. He was 24. Brought home, he was laid to rest in Jamaica Plain, MA. (Pic 2). At Ft Wadsworth on Staten Island, NY a new 6-inch disappearing battery was built in 1900 and named in his honor in 1906. Oriented south, the guns covered the harbor approaches. It served in the defenses of the harbor through 1943. Regrettably, Battery Mills is all but forgotten today, nearly completely buried in the postwar years, and heavily overgrown, neglected, and permanently abandoned by the National Park Service. Thought I would a timeline here as my timeline is a mix of my own stuff and the show/books. This will be getting updated as I go along. This is also for our own sanity to look back at. Advice is not to read if not up to date with current story as spoilers. Been split into two.

Pics: HPL' s influence is inescapable.

1. Say, are those radioactive drums in the background? Or, brain carriers?!!

2. Sigh. That's not the non-Euclidean architecture described in the story! It's too human/squared & needs more rounded edges, domes, etc...

3. Swami Alhazred knows all...

4. Say, is that the Monolith from "2001: A Space Odyssey"?

5. There's a lot of 'noise' as to which, of Lovecraft's works, is the best. Some readers like "The Call of Cthulhu", "The Mountains of Madness", etc.

But, for my money, "The Shadow Out of Time" is HPL's best use of his basic plot tropes.

H.P. Lovecraft: Overview.

1904 was a disastrous year for Howard. Before Whipple (his grandad) died, he was set to become another rich dilettante.

The sudden loss of his grandad's riches, left Lovecraft (& the rest of his family) almost destitute.

Howard even considered committing suicide. Luckily, for readers, he didn't choose this most final path.

But, it wouldn't be the last time that Lovecraft felt this way...

HPL would never get over the loss of Whipple's mansion - along with his status & childhood happiness.

Lovecraft's yearning for his former life led to his lugging certain items (fine linen, china pieces, books, etc) around with him, wherever he moved.

It would also lead to Howard's later affectation of being a "gentleman."

Now forced to live in a shared duplex, HPL would 1st come under Sarah's verbal abuse...

Worse, Lovecraft had to get ready to go to high school - after a long, home schooled period.

At the Hope Street High School, Howard clashed with his teachers, was bored by most of their lessons & was tagged with the nickname of "Lovey."

The next year (1905), was no better.

July found Lovecraft working on "De Triumpho Naturae" & complaining of some "nervous condition."

Not surprisingly, Sarah kept Howard home for the Fall school session. He ended up missing that whole year's school work!

This time, however, Sarah couldn't pay for private tutoring...

1906, however, would be a better year - for HPL's blossoming writing career.

Lovecraft started out his 'professional career' by writing letters of comment to newspaper editors.

In May, Howard sent his 1st letter (on some astronomical matter) to the Providence Sunday Journal.

A month later, HPL attacked astrology in another letter to the editor.

In July, Lovecraft received a used Remington typewriter from his mom, which he used for the rest of his life...

This same month, Howard started on his 1st true job. He began a weekly column (on astronomy) for the Pawtucket Valley Gleaner.

Obviously, this wasn't enough work for HPL. As he soon started writing another astronomy column. This time, for the Providence Tribune.

This 2nd job would last him 2 years.

(Til the horrors of 1908...)

Better yet, this was a job which allowed Lovecraft to write his own, larger articles.

The 1st such article being, "Could the Moon be Reached by Man?", which was printed that very August.

When HPL reentered high school, his new job - as a journalist - actually helped him out with his status.

Lovecraft had 'earned' a new moniker. Now, the other students called him "Professor."

At this time, HPL was motivated by the wish to graduate from Brown University to work as an astronomer!

So, he persevered...

During his 1st month back in school, Lovecraft finished another article, "Is Mars Inhabited?"

(Strangely enough, our own biologists are still working on this very subject.)

Weird Bit: Howard's English teacher thought that HPL had plagiarized a newspaper article - &, Lovecraft agreed with her!!

Then, of course, Howard showed her his byline - proving that he had written the story himself!

By October, HPL had finished another astronomy article "Are There (Any More) Undiscovered Planets?"

This was all atop of Lovecraft's school work & the weekly newspaper column.

But, Howard had to struggle thru another 2 years of schooling.

As a student, Howard focused on 3 subjects - 1 a repeat of algebra. The other 2 were chemistry & physics.

But, these classes all featured the kinds of math that HPL had a hard time understanding!

He had, it seemed, reached the limits of his skills as a student...

Janv1944 a Mai 1945 (Victory Day) chef et représentant au SHAEF Advance Command Post , auprès du Général en chef des troupes alliées Dwight Einsenhower .

Une photo sur internet le montre le 05 Juin 1944 auprès du Général en chef D.Eisenhower , le jour du débarquement : il faisait partie du staff rapproché de celui ci .

Il accompagnera le Général Eisenhower en France et pour sa visite aux camps de concentration libérés en Allemagne.

Il faisait partie des proches et de son état-major.

A ses côtés le 05 Juin 1944 (1 jour avant le D Day) voir photo prise le 05 Juin (voir photo )au matin par une recherche sur Internet alors qu’ils étaient sortis dehors devant le QG du SHAEF avec le staff de Eisenhower pendant les préparatifs du Jour le plus long : on y voit Thor Smith à côté d’Eisenhower côté américain .

L’autre côté est composé d’anglais du SHAEF.

Il semblerait que Thor porte des bottes de para US .

Ce calot de l’US Air Force porte son grade de Colonel (aigle américain) . Il est de taille US 7 1/2., galonné en noir et argent pour son grade d’officier.

Each year, I turn the volume down in my life just a bit as we approach June 6, D-Day.

This year, it will have been 75 years since the largest seaborne invasion in history took place. Thousands died—and countless others were indelibly changed by the experience.

Here’s a brief story of how my family was affected on this day: The A. M. Smith family of Reno, Nevada, and a tale of three sons on one fateful day.

Alfred “Long Tom” Smith and his wife, Ivan, had four children: three boys and a girl.

« Long Tom » was a miner in Nevada and eventually became state engineer. On D-Day, the couple’s three sons were already commissioned officers in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Their eldest son, Dale Smith, graduated the U.S. Military Academy in the class of 1934. He was fascinated with airplanes. He was assigned to the Army Air Corps and by 1943, he was a bomb group leader with the 384th Bomb Group (8th AF).

Most of his combat missions were over Germany, but in early June, he led bombing missions over France in support of Operation Overlord.

As commander of the 384th, Dale was a decorated flyer, with 31 combat missions (Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with three clusters, and the Croix de Guerre with palm).

Dale went on to serve in leadership positions in Okinawa, as head of the 64th Air Divison and later as a strategic adviser to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired as a major general in 1964, 20 years after D-Day.

The second son, Thor Smith, was my grandfather. He was a newspaperman in the William Randolph Hearst organization. At the bidding of his brother, he applied for and was granted a commission in the Army Air Corps.

Thor rose quickly through the ranks until he was a press officer for Gen. Eisenhower at SHAEF headquarters in England at the time of the invasion. Thor accompanied Eisenhower to Paris and later to Germany during the liberation of the concentration camps.

After leaving the military with the rank of colonel, Thor returned to the Hearst organization. He was assistant to the publisher at the San Francisco Call-Bulletin.

Gen. “Ike” Eisenhower was Thor’s hero. In fact, my mother tells the story of when Ike was invited over to their house for dinner. She and my grandmother worked all day on dinner. When the doorbell rang, she went to answer…then fainted. They put her to bed and she missed dinner.

While his two brothers were on the scene for the invasion, Drew Smith graduated with the rest of his class at U.S. Military Academy at West Point on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Ike’s son, David, was his classmate.

Drew was anxious to fly and soon was checked out to fly the B-29s in Guam. Tragically, as he took off on June 11, 1946, his plane developed engine trouble. The B-29, fully-loaded wtih fuel, crashed into the ocean, killing all aboard.

As D-Day was a pivotal day in Western Civilization, it also affected families like ours at a very basic level. Mine is just one story—and I am proud to share it.
