Calming your (inner) demon. I'm all for these "befriended a monster/ghost/demon " type of stories. Since it's Halloween, I wanted to share a drawing, The fluky possession. I wanted to create at least one story like this. So here is what I came up with. A demon is summon and tries to get a soul, but they aren't good at it. (i'm working on it, haha) Happy Halloween everyone! Stay safe!!

Aside from the weird ending for TFP Starscream in Predacons Rising (implied to be killed by the Predacons), the show treated him pretty sympathetically (though not kindly).
He is a Bad Guy, so when he does things like shoot Bee's t-cog to a cinder or brag about killing Cliffjumper, yes, he is karmatically punished (by losing his own t-cog, by having Arcee almost kill him, etc). But whenever Megatron starts stomping towards him, the shots are framed from Starscream's perspective. It doesn't have an air of "yeah, go Megs! this is justice!", it is unsettling, it emphasizes how helpless Starscream is, it's like a scene from a horror movie or a bad dream.
(The only time Starscream getting thrashed was played for comedic effect was when he hit Predaking, who at the time was non-sapient; so it was like Starscream was hitting a dog.)
Remember how Starscream briefly went solo and then returned to the Nemesis, vowing to be loyal to Megatron? Well, he WAS loyal for the entire rest of the show. And Megatron still degraded him, dismissed his efforts, and beat him up. (Very notably, he beat up Starscream but not Knock Out for the Silas debacle.)
In other words, Megatron doesn't denigrate Starscream because of what Starscream's done--because he's conniving or traitorous. It happens because of who MEGATRON is. Starscream isn't a good person, but that's not why he's abused, nor does it justify it, and I thought the show was pretty unambiguous about that.
That's what makes Starscream's end in Predacon's Rising so odd. I speculate that they were trying for a tragic ending of "abuse victim becomes the abuser" (as we did see him mistreating the Predacons, even after he knew they were sapient, and enjoying it).
But Starscream was also comic relief with Knock Out for the entire last season, which reeeeally didn't allow it to work. Everyone loves a comic relief guy and they are usually allowed to live, escape, or be redeemed. (For example, Iago the parrot was redeemed in the sequel to "Aladdin" even though he was totally on board with killing Aladdin and Jasmine in the first movie.) Also, Knock Out getting to switch sides made it even weirder. IMO they should have had Starscream go with Shockwave (who just, like, left??).
Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

If prime and bayverse Optimus met what would happen would they fight or not get along because bayverse Optimus mercelecly kills deceptions
Well @justanotherperson1 made an absolutely fabulous two part comic about this exact scenario and I highly recommend checking that out if you are interested in seeing how bayverse and tfp Optimus interact. But in my personal opinion I think that they would get along well... at first. They would agree on their values and their reason for fighting, as well at their desire to protect their loved ones. But eventually they would see the differences between them.
Bayverse Prime is a very damaged mech. He has seen too much and has fallen deep down a path of rage and violence as he has had most of his attempts to be diplomatic backfire and harm those he loves. He is a mech who is older, wiser, but also far more cynical. Unwilling to risk the lives of his family on hesitation or doomed attempts at peace, he has instead chosen violence. And yet despite fighting with the power of a small army, he still loses, he still fails. And that more than anything is what drives him further down the road of pain and anguish. This in turn makes him less rational, less strategic, and only focused on the immediate threat. He wants peace, but he is too vengeful to see the way to it through any other means than violence. In a way he is almost like Megatron from tfp. He has good intentions, but slowly he has fallen into a dark place where if left to be, he may never return from (as seen with the whole nemesis prime thing).
As for Transformers Prime Optimus? He is in a similar place but has a much more stable support group to keep him focused on what really matters. He is compassionate, he is wise, and he is set apart from the horrors of the war by the effects of the Matrix on his mind. However he is also hesitant, unwilling to kill when he deems it not necessary, and a bit too compassionate by most standards. He has done horrible things in the past but remains hopeful, and that more than anything would infuriate bayvere prime. It would make him enraged to watch tfp Optimus go along and let Megatron live despite all the pain he inflicts. He would be even more wrathful upon seeing the scars left by the decepticons on tfp Optimus's team, leading him to see tfp Optimus as weak, unwilling, and naïve.
Both have flaws that they see in each other but are unwilling or cannot see within themselves.

So I thought of this last night after watching a quick review of the Friday the 13th movies and it has been in my head since. (The video is by the youtuber chalupa. This is in tfp btw.)
So basically on cyberteon, after the war, there's this successful horror movie trilogy and the directors are thinking of making the final part of the series. They want to make the one character that has been watching from the sidelines the whole time. Then one guy gets the idea to get a popular figure to be that character. But the only popular figures at the time are political figures.
So they go to like Bumblebee or Arcee or something and their like "nah, the movie business isn't really my thing." But like they have Ratchet with them for some reason and he's like, "oh wow, being in a movie sure sounds interesting." So like the directors are like sure why not and make some adjustments to this new character to just make them Ratchet. Because Ratchet's smart and would figure the bad guys whole flow very easily.
So like they just have ratchet in here with seasoned actors and like 1/12 of the shit he does is like improvised cus the directors told him to just be himself the whole time. And most of the script was pretty accurate.
I have two scenes floating in my head at this point. So the first is the whole introduction of the new character thing and it's like a whole interview for like a talk show or something and like in the middle of the answer to a question the bad guy walks in and like he's murdered 3 people at this point and ratchet just goes like this:
Tumblr media
(Can't draw the back of ratchet's head lol) Two seconds later ratchet just shoots the guy like 10 times.
The second is like the bad guy is thought to be dead because the girl main character stabed him 45 times and they all start walking away but then the bad guy gets up and so they all have to do a climactic turn around. And when they turn around ratchet's just like "fuck this guy" picks up a vase and like smashes it on the guys head. The bad guy falls to the floor and junk and and ratchet casually just does this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So(off topic) the tf wiki page for tfp ratchet says he's from a small village outside of iacon or something so I'm spawning artistic liberties and saying the village is in vaproex. Thus making him Ratchet of vaporex, and I head cannon he looks more like someone from iacon than from vaporex so everyone just assumes he's from iacon. So when the credits are being made ratchet's all like "oh btw I'm from vaporex" and everyone's like "oh no we put iacon." But ratchet just like changes so it reads "Ratchet of Vaporex as Ratchet of Iacon" instead. They kept it because they were too scared to change it.
I shared this with @shroombat14 already and I thought it would be better to write it down in case I ever want to make a fic or comic about it. I'll probably reblog to add any new ideas to this idea dump. Maybe new visuals as well. 🤷‍♂️

Hello, I’m sorry to hear that you received bad news, whatever it may be please accept my condolences.((
I don’t necessarily have a question but I just really wanna share some thoughts I had on TEG and lore stuff. When I began reading TEG a few months ago I was immediately captivated and infuriated at the same time. My stoopid little brain refused to accept some diversions from the tfp lore and it took me a solid few days to get over myself (guess I went through character development too heh). I didn’t like that Lazerbean wasn’t a sentient being but after a while I cannot imagine it being any other way. I really love how you completely changed the character but also kept him so accurate too?!?! Like damn I’m actually mega impressed! Also one thing for me was that in the novel “Exedus” (which is in the same universe as tfp, dunno if you’ve read it) Soundwave is said to hate Crystal city and again, in my brain it was like… Soundwave hates crystal city = Soundwave hates crystals = Soundwave hates bright colours. For many years that was the character that I thought Soundwave was. And next thing I know is I’m seeing him growing crystals and simping for Rodimus who has bright colours!? So yea, now that I’m over my initial crisis I can safely say that I’m in love with your ideas and your writing. You’ve put so much effort into this work which is phenomenal, I hope to read more amazing chapters/ works from you!! I hope also that you don’t push yourself too hard, setting and achieving deadlines can be super stressful and overwhelming and the last thing you want is to burn out. Keep up the amazing work and take care <3
hi! thank you! the condolences aren't in order just yet. we have been told to prepare, though
>I didn’t like that Lazerbean wasn’t a sentient being...
This remains the most controversial thing in the fic xDDDDD people will accept Soundwave's difficult and TFP-diverging past, they'll accept the horrors of The Irradion, and the war atrocities by various Megatrons, but not Laserbeak being non-sentient xD
>...but after a while I cannot imagine it being any other way
aww, I'm glad you eventually took to the idea! to be honest, I prefer this version. "Dad Soundwave" is something my inner self pushes away with a stick. I think because I am averse to TFs being 'dads' and 'moms.' It feels... icky to me. (But I completely understand I am in a VAST minority, here xD)
>I really love how you completely changed the character but also kept him so accurate too?!?
thank you! that was a major goal of mine =D
>Also one thing for me was that in the novel “Exedus” (which is in the same universe as tfp, dunno if you’ve read it)
no, I didn't know TFP had novels and comics til people started telling me in comments that Laserbeak was sentient. I had no idea the novels existed. I didn't know SW had an aversion to crystals til you told me just now xD haha WOOPS. ah well, that's why the "AU" tag is on there :'D
>now that I’m over my initial crisis I can safely say that I’m in love with your ideas and your writing.
thank you so much! It's very difficult for me to get over how I think a character could be, so I know it must've been hard to get through TEG with a firm Soundwave in your mind. but thanks for giving the fic a chance, and I'm very flattered you enjoy it!
thank you for the kind words =) it may be, in the end, that I won't be able to make my deadline. which bums me out super hard, but I gotta see what the news in the next few days will be. that will determine it
thanks again <3

What would cybertronian horror be like?
I mean, we know theres entertainment in Cybertron, they got music and sports and art, so what would they horror media be like?
After all most (not all, mind you) human horror can be boiled down to fear of dying, and how easy that can happen, but when it comes to cybertronians death is actually not an everyday occurrence (BEFORE the war, I mean)
Remember, Tailgate didn't even knew bots could die of old age, and even then, his "old age" was actually "old age without proper maintenance/healthcare".
Not to mention bots are just hard to kill in general, something like falling down the stairs, or heck, even falling off a building would result in damages but rarely fatal ones. Same with accidents or getting stabbed or run over, death is just not a constant in a bots life.
So back again, whats their horror like? What are cybertronian horror cliches?
Perhaps the loss of your autonomy? Being turned into a drone? Being hacked? Having someone upload their brain into your body? Being permanently stuck in alt mode? Or being unable to access your altmode when in dire need of?
Having your parts stolen and leaving you with the bare minimum to still function, but being unable to do anything else?
Or, just like killer robots are a classic here, are there organic invaders movies? Things like the blob? What about mimics, how would that work? Something that looks like a sentient cybertronians, but is actually a mecha controlled by an organic?
Curiously enough, most of these actually happen in some canon or others.
In TFP alone we have the bulkhead mimic soundwave made, and nemesis prime. And ALSO stolas (was that his name? I think? Soldier asshole?) Getting shoved into Breakdown's body like a parasite or a tumor.
Then in the comics we have Pharma, a flyier hanging of a cliff, but unable to transform into jet mode.
Not to mention the whole empurata and shadow playing dealeo.

I wish the concept of cityspeakers got expanded on in cyberverse besides a handwavey “Windblade can wake up giants with her massive brain and psychic powers and maybe do some other psychic things but don’t worry about it”

Right now, I'm watching a bunch of Curious Archive videos and digitizing/ freshening up a bunch of sketches from a speculative artbook of mine, and I'm vividly reminded of the absolute potential for speculative aspect of Transformers... and the horror aspect. There's SO MUCH dystopia vibes in every one of the shows, violence is pretty damn common and often death is a big part of the shows (We all remember TFA Blurr, TFP Cliffjumper, G1 Optimus, ect ect.) And so many terrifying concepts come up that are just. There. Cloning. Mind control. Technoorganics, often made through quick tragedy or lax experimentation, an unholy mix of technology and flesh/bone/ect. Literal zombies. The idea of an entire organic planet forced to become metallic, which was generally agreed that it would be lethal to the human species. Even the circumstances leading to the great Cybertronian war are insinuated to be pretty damn grim. Just the idea that your home is just FUCKING GONE and you're stuck on this alien planet, waiting for the moment your hosts decide to reject you. Mecha getting isolated for so long that there's no way in hell it's healthy. Having such long lifespans turned far too short far too often. Toxic and dangerous hierarchies that put your functioning at risk at every damn moment in some continuities (this usually applies to Decepticons, but goddamn is it loud in the SG! Autobots everytime I've read shattered glass). Just the worst individuals ever being able to reap the rewards of society's collapse. Living sentient creations that just don't come out right.
The sheer amount of psychological horror and body horror that can come from transformers... it's amazing and totally underutilized. Ik the IDW comics went into it, and TFP focused on some. And I've seen a nice amount of fanfiction go into it. But I need more. Especially with that hyperrealistic stuff, some people might find that uncanny but i say that's the point.

Rewatching Transformers G1 S2: Episode 1: Autobot Spike
Yes, this is where the Surprised Ratchet meme image comes from:
Tumblr media
This episode has a lot going on including near-death of a human character on screen, body horror/a Frankenstein plot, and some genuinely unsettling scenes mostly made creepy due to the combination of some interesting dialogue/voice acting and typical G1 Quality.
And Spike shoots Starscream in the ass mid-flight, which is fantastic.
He also shoots his dad, which is less fantastic.
Being a horror nerd, I love this episode, so here we go!
Gonna put this below a cut because I’m taking a lot of screenshots here:
You can watch the whole episode on YouTube here in 4 parts, if you want to watch along!
Alright, so it opens with Sparkplug trying to create “Autobot X”, which is straight up just a Frankenstein’s Monster of autobot parts. It’s weirdly creepy, and vaguely reminiscent of the infamous Ratchet-Megatron fusion in the Marvel comics.
Tumblr media
I want to point out that Sparkplug says “I wanna see what I can do with a lotta spare Autobot parts and some human ingenuity” before the reveal shot above, and that’s horrific if you think about it for more than like, three seconds.
It also may have been the origins of the MECH plot line in TFP, actually! Very similar body horror type thing going on. Anyway.
It works briefly, but it flips out and has to get shut down.
Tumblr media
Ironhide fires a laser, problem solved, nobody’s worried. They put Autobot X in storage, because surely a rampantly aggressive seemingly sentient pastiche of random Autobot parts is nothing to worry about. It’s fine.
Wheeljack is like, hell yeah, I’ll help you work on it later. Which is when we get the Surprised Ratchet image, because yeah, I bet Ratchet’s freaked out a little since this thing is made of SPARE AUTOBOT PARTS.
Then we’re swept immediately into a fight with Megatron, as many Seekers as you can fit in frame at one time, and Soundwave.
For whatever reason, Bumblebee shows up driving through a bunch of partially blown up missile/rocket components, with Spike in the driver’s seat. Even Spike is like, dude, why are we here? And Bumblebee is just like, I mean, we couldn’t NOT show up. lmao
Tumblr media
Unsurprisingly, Bumblebee gets shot-- In alt-mode, with Spike inside. Uh oh.
Megatron leaves, because Frank Welker can only voice so many characters at once, and our attention is turned to the carnage.
Tumblr media
Ratchet is like, sure, I can fix Bumblebee right up! Meanwhile, Ironhide is like oh god, oh my god, is this how you hold a human??? Is it dead??? Optimus is gonna be pissed.
So Optimus rolls up like, listen, take him to the hospital, come on. Ratchet lets him in the back of his ambulance mode, and Prowl goes with him so that he can throw his emergency lights on to give the illusion of a police escort, ensuring the drive is even quicker.
(I miss the days when Prowl wasn’t a total asshole.)
It cuts pretty quickly to Spike in an operating theatre; Apparently getting shot by alien space lasers isn’t conducive to human health:
Tumblr media
It cuts again to the attending physician standing at Spike’s beside, presumably in ICU although they appear to be in a private room, with Sparkplug on the other side of the bed.
The doctor says “Hmm, if only there were a way of separating Spike’s mind from his body while we work...” Which, uh, what? What surgeon says that? You can sort of already do that in actual human medicine, it’s called an induced coma.
But sure, we need exposition here, I get it. The screenplay here is tight. Sparkplug says he has an idea...
Back at the Autobot hangout, things seem fairly chill, considering.
Ratchet is welding Bumblebee’s ass in alt-mode, while Bumblebee complains about how long it’s taking. lol
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Wheeljack and Sparkplug somehow have Spike hooked up to a Ghostbusters colander helmet, which will hopefully transfer his mind into the malfunctioning/in stasis Autobot X frame. Yikes.
Tumblr media
It works! Spike is now also Autobot X. We will call him Spike X for short.
And for some reason, Spike saying “D-Da-ad?” with this faceplate expression is incredibly funny to me, while also being really weird and creepy:
Tumblr media
However, this is only cool for like two seconds, at which point Spike X truly starts to lose his shit.
It gets real creepy here, with Spike X saying in a very oddly flat inflection “Why? Why did you do this to me? Why?” and it’s pretty wild. There’s even a mild strobe effect for a few frames.
Tumblr media
Sideswipe and Sunstreaker try to help calm him down, but Spike X throws them both across the room.
Optimus is like, oh shit, we made a giant metal teenager. Stop him, but use low power, because if the Autobot X frame is damaged too much, then Spike’s consciousness may not be able to be returned to his actual human body.
Note that Optimus says this in a pretty relaxed way, then levels a shoulder mounted cannon straight at Spike X, which is incredibly funny.
Tumblr media
It quickly gets deeply weird and creepy again when Spike X is temporarily able to talk with his dad, and states that “it’s hard to think, like something is telling me to do... bad.... things!” Yiiiiiikes.
Tumblr media
He gets it under control again, apologises to his dad for the outburst (I think it’s OK, Spike), and Optimus says that he’s cool to stay at the base and he’ll be taken care of while his human body heals up.
However, oh shit, the Decepticons have found out that Spike now has an Autobot frame-- And they know he’s unstable.
Tumblr media
Starscream tries to roast him, but Megatron’s like, shut up nerd, we’re gonna make Spike X turn against the Autobots! It’s a good plan, I’m serious!
Back at the Autobot base, Ratchet is still welding Bumblebee’s ass, and Bumblebee is still complaining. Wheeljack hooks up Spike X with some network television, and he’s watching... Frankenstein. Because the six year old kids who are the intended audience of G1 may not be familiar with the source material for this episode’s plot, I guess, which is fair. (Frank Welker nails it here as Dr. Frankenstein, but that’s unsurprising, because he always nails it. I think he’s also voicing Frankenstein’s Monster, but I haven’t checked the credits.)
Obviously, this isn’t a great thing for Spike X to be watching at this particular moment, so he freaks out again.
Wheeljack and Sparkplug come running, and somehow Sparkplug is covering ground faster than Wheeljack. It’s fine, don’t worry about it.
Tumblr media
Ratchet’s progress on welding Bumblebee’s ass is interrupted by Spike X breaking through the wall and seemingly flying away. lmao
They just sort of stand there, like, well, we lost him, I guess.
Tumblr media
Bumblebee is like, alright, gonna go get my boy.
So he drives out of this massive crater, and Ratchet is like, wait! Your radio transmitter still doesn’t work. (Apparently their radio transmitters are located in their asses. Fascinating.)
Spike X sits on a cliff and says “what a drag”, which, yeah. Being a Frankenstein space robot would be cool if not for the immense psychological damage this is absolutely causing.
However, he also calls himself a “walking garbage can” in a completely genuine put-out tone of voice, which absolutely sells that this is a teenager in a giant robot body and I laughed, I won’t lie.
Tumblr media
Some of Megatron’s cronies locate him and hold his position.
At the same time, Bumblebee shows up and tries to talk Spike X down from a random destructive rampage.
Tumblr media
He throws Bumblebee off the cliff! And Megatron’s squad is rolling up. (Well, flying up, anyway.) Uh oh!
Spike X is like, hell yeah, bring it. More ass to kick. And it turns out his arm mounted cannon works, because he shoots Starscream directly in the undercarriage and says “YEAH, MAN!” and it’s so genuine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the perfect reaction to being a teenager in a giant robot body and just suddenly being able to shoot lasers and kick ass. Look at how happy he is, that he just shot Starscream in the butt mid-air. It’s awesome.
Unfortunately, the Seekers do actually beat him up, although Spike X puts up a good fight.
Megatron then takes advantage of his further weakened state, and swoops in to pitch a classic “Join Us” speech. Spike X calls him “Megacrumb”, which is probably acceptable because he’s absolutely concussed by this point.
Megatron is willing to overlook this for the sake of teaming up.
Tumblr media
Bumblebee eavesdrops, and drives away-- But Spike X gives Megatron a handshake, and agrees to “make them pay”. Oh shit!
For some reason, Optimus and Ironhide are back at the rocket facility to watch a launch. Because I guess whatever, this whole situation is chill, let’s go watch rockets? IDK
But either way, Optimus roasts the inferior quality of human technology, while Bumblebee just drives up on site despite Military Police levelling sniper rifles at him in order to report that Megatron is taking advantage of Spike X’s inability to think clearly.
Optimus says “I feared something like this might happen”, which, if that were the case, why not take actions to prevent it, maybe? Not the strongest Optimus episode.
To be fair though, Ironhide transforms and is already driving off before Optimus even gives the order to roll out, so I guess Ironhide either really wants to kick some ass or cares slightly more about Spike X’s wellbeing. He has no dialogue here, so we can only guess.
They get there, with even more Autobots who showed up at some point in the rapid scene cuts here, and Spike X is super unhinged-- Charging his weapons, he starts speaking in a more strained and angry way, and engages the Autobots!
He hits Optimus with what appears to be a chest laser? It’s hard to see. But it’s super effective:
Tumblr media
Optimus pleads with Spike X to calm down, but Spike X straight up pulls MEGATRON IN GUN MODE out of his sub-space and shoots Optimus directly in the faceplate. Damn!
Tumblr media
The Seekers and Soundwave drop in, and start rapid firing on all the Autobots present.
Tumblr media
We get some great shots of Megatron in his gun alt-mode as he tries to convince Spike X to keep attacking. Optimus and Bumblebee hide behind cover, attempting to bring Spike X to his senses long enough to disarm him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suddenly, Wheeljack and Sparkplug roll up; Sparkplug attempts to talk some sense into Spike, too.
Tumblr media
Optimus and Bumblebee are at a loss; If they take out Spike X, the damage might take him out for good.
However, Sparkplug fails in his efforts to talk to Spike X; He SHOOTS HIS DAD AND KNOCKS HIM OFF THE CLIFF.
Tumblr media
Can you imagine if they put an ad break here? lmao
Luckily, he has like, a claw machine arm, and he catches his dad before he becomes a human smoothie.
Tumblr media
This shocks Spike X badly enough that while he still has Megatron in gun mode, he takes a few pot shots at the Seekers and the Decepticons decide it’s time to bounce, so Megatron bails too.
He apologises for almost killing his dad, his dad is like hey no beef man, and it cuts to them in the hospital:
Tumblr media
Sparkplug takes his son’s body back to the Autobot base (that sounds worse than it is), and they prepare to transfer him back into his body.
What’s extra funny here is that he nervously laughs and says “Hope you fixed this thing up good, Ratchet!” And Ratchet says absolutely nothing. Not a word.
Tumblr media
It’s a success! Dad and son hug, totally not even addressing anything that happened this whole episode, because that’s a job for a therapist.
Tumblr media
Ratchet, who continues to not really care about any of this, tells Wheeljack “You know, I could probably repair that mess, but I think it’s best that I don’t.” (This is a play on what Wheeljack said earlier in the episode when he offered to help Sparkplug fix up Autobot X to begin with.)
I love how tired Wheeljack looks. LOL
Tumblr media
Spike, now recovered, leaves us with a great question to close out the episode: “I wonder what it’d be like for a robot mind to be transferred... to a human!”
Tumblr media
Depending on what kind of kid you were, his question was either imagination fuel for fun humanformer ideas, or was a blatantly bad question indicating he learned nothing and providing nightmare fuel trying to imagine one of the Autobots losing their shit in a human body the same way Spike lost his shit while inhabiting Autobot X.
Anyway, great episode! 10/10 Scary, funny, creepy, Starscream got shot in the ass by a teenager.

I’ve been in love with your work for years and it’s timeless. I have a question too!
I loved TFP and got more involved with Transformers after that but I feel like I have no clue about the IDW series and all the comics. Which ones would you recommend reading to be more caught up with that aspect of the franchise? No need to answer if it seems like a confusing question or if it asks of tooo much. <3
Hello and thank you for your note!
Like you, I started with TFP and only got into the IDW comics after getting seduced by the panels from More than Meets the Eye that kept popping up on my dash. MTMTE was the first IDW comic I read, and in my opinion, it's a great place to start. While it assumes you have a nodding acquaintance with the universe, it's self-contained enough that you can enjoy it without any knowledge the hundreds of criss-crossing narratives that inform its context. James Roberts is an excellent worldbuilder and has a graceful knack for slipping in crucial fragments of backstory in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming. It's also just a pure joy to read. (Its continuation, Lost Light, suffers from an abbreviated run and can feel a bit messy, but it still has some wonderful moments.)
So, that's where I would start. But if you have a horror of jumping into a series midway, this is a very handy post outlining the order in which to read the IDW comics, if you want a comprehensive understanding of what the hell is going on in any given moment. (Or as comprehensive as can be with different writers coming at the beast from different angles.)

LoSH S2 discussion
I love Legion of Superheroes. And i love season 2, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think about how it could have been improved. In terms of quality, it varies more than season 1. Some parts are top tier while others… eh.
Season 2 is darker than season 1. And there’s the inherent stigmatism that darker means better. But it’s not true.
A horror schlock film is not inherently better than an animated film.
I don’t blame the staff on all its shortcomings. Kids WB was on its deathbed, so they probably had less time to work and iron out ideas. And executive meddling.
The second season had a lot of good elements, but there are things that weighed it down. I am here to discuss how to improve said things.
Heads up: ended up editing part of this post after rewatching the episodes.
This first bit is more of a personal preference, but instead of the 41st century, maybe move the original source of conflict to a farther region of space, one that the UP doesn’t interact with, and has been growing in terms of turmoil until they finally resort to bringing the Legion over. In other words, it has just been put aside by everyone else to the last minute.
Parallel to Brainy’s relationship to Brainiac. He doesn’t want to deal with it. He never brings it up. But maybe if he did, he wouldn’t have gotten corrupted.
This place still has plenty of old documentation of the original age of superman, so Kell is disillusioned with the ideal glory days. Keep Kell Edgy.
Kell’s home and K3NT still gets destroyed - reflects Krypton’s own destruction.
SPEAKING OF KELL:
Make his story more apparent that it’s one realizing that kindness is not an inherent weakness. And neither is being soft. He was raised for fighting and killing Imperiex, and was taught to think that they were weaknesses. Have him realize his identity can be beyond the Clone of Superman made to kill Imperiex. Or rather, have him react more to realizing that he’s moving beyond his given identity.
To clarify; they do address his development in the show a few times, but I want more continuous development instead of the rapid nods we get. Have him try to interact in a more humane way with others. Especially with other members of the Legion. Where they have to take a double take in seeing him acting not that edgy. Maybe offer more flashback of him fighting Imperiex in comparison, and how he treated allies then.
Also put K3NT’s story under the microscope. I doubt Imperiex just came out of nowhere with his attacks. Plus the fact they went far enough to send a hitman after a fucking child? That screams yikes and maybe we need to double check the story.
And an overall issue to be addressed is what rights do robots have and what conditions need to be met? Because let’s face it, we make robots to do complex work for us. But Colu is a culture where the main people ARE robots. Like in Transformers. What line do we draw between non-sentient robots vs the sentient ones in the 31st century? And what about cyborgs/people who give up their original bodies for robotic ones?
Plus Imperiex himself came to be because of the perfected combination of organic tissue and robotics. This topic of robots and individuality/personhood could have been a fun topic to explore.
Don’t sideline the girls. Leave TG alone.
Don’t put SG in a coma for nearly the whole season - seriously it’s the reason why the guys make one bad decision after the other. Although with that said, it’s because she’s not around we got the majority of s2 plots. She’s the goddamn mom of the squad. Just make her busier and unable to keep an eye on her idiot boys for the plots based on bad decisions to happen.
Or have her deal with after-effects of what Esper did to her. Maybe after a whole season of being the emotional support character, have her be the one in need of emotional support or not being able to help directly, especially when the group needs emotional support. Emotional support paradox.
Maybe don’t make Cosmic Boy appear as much as a dick in the episodes where he does show up. He’s trying to hold this goddamn team together, and there’s a goddamn tyrant trying to conquer the galaxy. HE’S FUCKING TIRED AND STRESSED. AND IM SURE THERE ARE A BUNCH OF JERKS WHO WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT TO DISSOLVE THE LEGION. Better yet, throw in some more backstory with him and his little brother Pol!
And in regards to Imperiex… The dude has a lot of potential. I like his voice actor, Phil Morris. The guy voiced Dr. Sweets from Atlantis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But his writing needs help.
In the original DC comics, he’s the embodiment of Entropy. Anyone who’s seen Madoka is probably familiar with what that is. But if you're not, here’s a definition: “ the measure of a system’s thermal energy per unit temperature that is unavailable for doing useful work...” He’s the embodiment of that energy that cannot be used for anything. And Entropy grows over time.
Another definition of what Entropy is “lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.”
In the comics, he’s more of a cosmic being as a result of him being an embodiment of unusable energy. He’s been in existence since, well, the beginning. He had destroyed the universe and recreated it multiple times. Okay, so that lines up with how the show portrays him. And technically, he does get the universe to reset itself in the 41st century when he alters the 31st century enough.
But I personally feel that making him a cosmic being is kinda… meh?
I personally prefer more personal villains most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, an Eldritch being done right makes a great character, but I can’t see Imperiex as one. At least not LoSH’s version.
Plus I like it when the protagonist sees the villain has a point and has changed as a result for the better.
You know, over a year ago, I used to think that it was impossible to make a tyrannical villain who’s presented as real evil seem complex.
And then… I was introduced to TFP Megatron.
Tumblr media
Now for you LoSH fans who haven’t watched Transformers Prime, Megatron was once Megatronus. A low caste member who worked in the mines and Gladiator games. He wanted to fix the growing corruption of Cybertron. To make things better.
Tumblr media
But his worse personality traits took over, and he lost that good motivation. Now he’s just fighting to win and defeat Optimus Prime.
But despite the change of goals and ideals, he doesn’t want to simply abandon his relationship with Optimus. He and Optimus, or as he used to be called, Orion, were fighting for the betterment of society. And they meant something to each other. Megatron doesn’t want to just get it over with. He wants fanfare for his victory over Optimus. And he doesn’t want anyone else to rob him off that. But he isn’t opposed to getting Optimus/Orion back on his side. It’s because of this you can still argue that there is a remaining shred of good in him.
They were the best young lovers anD NO I AM NOT CRYING OVER THEM!
Also, the fact we know he was part of a minority group in the form of the lower cast  that was enslaved can make us sympathize with Megatronus of the past, as well as understand how he came to be.
It doesn’t mean we forgive him for his actions - and he has done a lot of shitty things. And I mean a lot.
But his history is more understandable. TFP Megatron’s a fall from grace.
OK I’m done dissecting TFP Meg’s writing.
We know Imperiex was a slave, and was originally organic, who’s from a society where his purpose is literally just to fight, and was gradually stripped of his original body. He was originally stripped of any agency before then though.
But he says this was a good thing. Calling his original body a weakness. And refers to his old self as a pathetic slave.
He gave up whatever softness he had.
Also, this is where K3NT’s story needs to be reexamined. Imperiex was made during what K3NT described as “A Time of Extended Prosperity”. That time had freaking slaves. And K3NT says that when Imperiex did rise up, they were unprepared. So… they were prosperous, but lacked defense to prevent anything like that happening? Or perhaps those who were in charge were that unpopular that it was easy for Imperiex to start the war.
What made him decide conquering the galaxy was the next thing to do after he had every bit of his original self stripped away? Why go as far as destroy it?
What I’m trying to say is that they could borrow a few pages from the Megatron book. Maybe he was once trying to better the society he was part of, but he decides to play the violent card at some point. And somewhere along that strategy, he starts to lose sight of the initial goal. With that, being the victor and in control becomes the main one.
Or perhaps he has grown cynical of the galaxy as it is and decides it just needs to go all together, and then start from scratch.
Like the second definition of Entropy, he gradually declines in predictability and descends into disorder.
Maybe to juxtaposition the fact that Brainiac became the main threat at the end, make him the opposite or foil to him. Rationality or logic do not serve as first-or-second influences to decisions under pressure. Emotions and his own perceived ideas do.
Speaking of Brainiac, maybe offer more of the OG Brainiac. Give us more of that smooth-voiced Corey Burton.
Or TFA Megatron.

Seductive Bastard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sorry I have fallen for the shady-business-mafia-boss-but-morally-grey robot.
Also, the members of the legion that only get one episode focus? Give them more screen time. You can’t just introduce superman’s new adopted son Karate Kid and just not bring him for another speaking role again!
Actually, that brings me to another point.
As @spandexinspace pointed out, his episode is not the best, and is arguably the worst written of the whole series. Things that are issues do get brushed off to the side.
So a proposal on potential rewrite:
First, have the legion look over its current rules and what exceptions/changes they need to make.
Explore the subject of kids having to participate in these fights.
To clarify, kid shows are meant to be escapism for kids.
Shocking, I know.
So it makes sense that some characters would be the same age as the viewers.
But while this is good representation, as you get older, you find yourself going “WHY WOULD THE ADULTS LET THEM ENDANGER THEMSELVES?!”
Kids having to fight at that age does have consequences. Batman Beyond certainly addressed it. So did Steven Universe Future.
Tumblr media
Steven ended up being responsible for so much, that when he no longer needed to take care of things, he was unsure of who he was. And then there’s the fact he ended up with PTSD because of him having to fight so much. Then you have the fact that Greg and Rose never intended to raise him like their caretakers did... but as good as their intentions were, they still caused damage. Rose for… all the gem stuff. And look, Greg is a great dad, but not enforcing anything for Steven when he’s growing up still has it’s cost.
With Batman, he’s obviously going to do his damn best to keep kids safe, including the Robins. But sometimes, it’s not enough. He wasn’t able to keep Tim safe in the event with the Joker in Batman Beyond. Where he was held captive and tortured.
Tumblr media
But the Batkids are never expected to resolve this stuff by themselves. Because Batman knows how much you can get screwed up as a kid. He fucking cares.
And to be fair, in most continuities I’m aware of, the other sidekicks came out pretty okay overall.
Except Jason Todd.
So my proposal?
Have Val originally with Grimbor, as a sort of Protege. But have the legion capture him, only to go “uhhh this is a child with no powers”. And Superman, being the good, wholesome paragon we all love, takes him under his wing.
In all honesty, I want Superman pulling a batdad for Karate Kid in his intro episode the whole time. That was the best part of the episode for me.
Plus after the events of “Cry Wolf”, the Legion should examine the no-killing rule. Because they do need to kill Imperiex to save the universe. But that goes against the code. But they can argue it’s a necessity. But Mar Londo is also a monster. He’s the everyday monster some of us have grown up with.
When do you need to make exceptions to kill someone?
And my final main suggestion:
Add more Mekt.
Tumblr media
What the heck were you guys expecting? You all KNOW me by now. I LOVE MY GARBAGE BOY.
Joking aside, here’s what I would do.
Have the Chained Lightning episode pushed back, but have Mekt with Imperiex earlier. Most of us would yell “Why the heck would you join the guy whose main goal is to destroy the galaxy?!” But this is one of the easiest things to address.
Explore more of his past. Use the comic sources with him being outcast for being a solo on Winath. With that in mind, him deciding to side with Imperiex can make sense.
Why try protecting something that has done nothing but hurt you?
There’s actually a pretty good reason why he would side with Imperiex, as seen in Champions and Lightning Storm. Remember, Mekt was willing to cheat to get ahead of the sports competition he was introduced in. And also was thrilled when fighting Garth and was beating him on his own. He likes being in power.
Imperiex offers him that.
As for why Imperiex would bother with Mekt? That’s a little harder to answer. He knows that Mekt has a soft spot for his brother, and in turn sister, which proves to be the reason why the Tachyon Cannon fails. You’d think Imperiex would remove a huge fatality.
But he doesn’t.
Maybe he could hold another type of value for Mekt. Perhaps... nostalgia?
I’m still sold on the idea that they were sleeping together.
Also, give us a conclusive answer on where Mekt stands with the LSV. In the comics, he was the leader, but that role was given to Tyr in the cartoon more or less.
OK I think this has been polished enough for me to post now. What you guys think? Feel free to add on!
