20221109. 【🌊】
Recently, my design unit took a trip to Hastings, which is our site for the year. This was my first time visiting a coastal town; exciting times. I was very grateful for the (mostly) brilliant weather! It granted us some amazing views and photo opportunities. There was something magical about the grand, billowing clouds floating by the seaside; you want to hold onto those moments of beauty forever.
Some nice buildings along the way too; there was a Teulon church amongst other things. I’d never seen a Teulon in real life before. His London churches look like marvellous monstrosities (in a good way) and I’d love to go visit them. On the modern side of things, a tiny peek at Albany Court by Burnet, Tait and Partners. I also found myself being inevitably drawn to the slightly dilapidated and tired-looking Queensbury House - those vague impressions of stairs are just in your face and you can’t help but look.

Antiquarian poetry: Soane churches in London.
I had the idea for this post after visiting St John on Bethnal Green by chance and (as usual) reading what Ian Nairn had to say about it. His snide remarks about the other two Soane churches reminded me that I had visited them earlier in the year, so here I am musing on these lesser-known Soanian delights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always felt that, compared to his houses, the churches are much more reserved - nowhere as daring as the pure spatial experiments of domesticity. Perhaps it was not the futuristic visionary, but the traditional side of Soane the designer who conjured them up (and equally talented at that). Here is his knack for history and the ancient on full display, beyond his eccentric collection of curiosities. St Peter’s, Walworth, reflects this best for me - my first impression of it is flush with Grecian details and motifs. A piece of Athens in South London, and an extraordinary contrast.
Tumblr media
Holy Trinity, Marylebone is its close sibling; their general forms and architectural language are remarkably similar. While I can’t speak for the interiors as I’ve not been inside any of them, I imagine they would make some curious comparisons as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
St John is a little different from the happy pair. Timeline-wise, it sits in the middle, but design-wise, I feel it is Soane returning to his usual territory, playing with sculptural masses and exploring the groovy magic of visuospatial impact. The belfry becomes bulkier and the steeple reduced; St John retains traces of its twins but emerges as a new experiment. Rather lovingly, Nairn called this ‘a rough, tough little building’ where ‘Soane really came to grips with church design’. Gotta give him that much credit! This is also the church with a bit of interesting history; Samuel Sanders Teulon (who I will eventually post about) did a remodelling job here and added his own touches. According to Nairn, this was on the inside, and ‘the tragic swallowing up of one talent by another’. I’d be interested to see those adjusted interiors and cast my own judgement against his ever-so-lovely subjective opinions.

“Farmer Is Murdered; Indian Boy Suspected,” Manitoba Free Press. April 15, 1919. Page 05. --- Charred Remains of James Campbell, Wealthy Farmer, Found in Ruins of Home --- Constable Bain, of the provincial police, left yesterday afternoon for the Teulon district to investigate the circumstances of a murder reported from that locality. The victim of the crime, in connection with which an Indian youth named James Cochrane is held by the police at Stonewall, was James Campbell, a wealthy pioneer farmer, whose charred body was found among the remains of his home which had been destroyed by fire Sunday evening.
The tragedy was discovered by the dead man’s brother, Daniel Campbell, who lives a mile off and whose attention was attracted by smoke rising from the burning house. On a search of the premises being made a horse and the Indian were found to be missing. Cochrane was arrested by Constable Vincent at Stonewall yesterday morning when boarding a train.
Cochrane, who is said to be about seventeen, had arrived in the district on Thursday seeking work and was hired by the deceased. There are rumors in the neighborhood that he had a quarrel with his employer, struck him with an iron bar and set the house on fire to cover up traces of the crime. Some people declare the youth is weak-minded.
James Campbell, who was over sixty years old, came to Manitoba with his parents forty-five years ago. He was a bachelor. In addition to Daniel Campbell, he is survived by Mrs. Archie Wood, Teulon, Mrs. W. C. Ross, Gunton, and Mrs. C. Teskay, Okotosk, Alta., sisters.
