This is just me talking about (my) asexuality and aromanticism and mainly about how I figured I'm aroace. I'm from Finland and recently turned 30 so my experience and "lgbt+ history" might not be what you know it as, especially if you are not from Europe, or if your native language is English.

Also this is highly personal, so I doubt anyone here will have 100% same experience. But that's fine because remember: we're all individuals here and these are NEVER universal. You're still valid even if you wouldn't relate to what being aspec is to me.

It might be IS a long post so beware, but I've just been feeling like writing down some thoughts so here we go...

What I have been able to track is that I was 17, in 2008, when I first stumbled upon the term "asexuality". I don't remember exactly how, but I just remember reading about it and immediately going "yeah that's me". But what I do remember is that no one talked it being about sexual attraction. Basically how understood it was: asexuality = sex-repulsion.

I was 17, and somehow I knew I was sex-repulsed, but at the same time also thought I'm just a minor, so it's normal to be sex-repulsed. But even after turning 18, I don't recall ever feeling sexual attraction. I didn't think of myself as a "late bloomer" but just as someone who just has no interest towards sex. At some point I became really anxious of men, however. Nothing has ever happened to me* but still I, for some reason, developed terrible fear of men. I'm afab and just did not want to be seen as an object, and it made, still makes me, terrified to think someone might look at me and have Emotions. I know that we can't control our brains, I mean, I can't look at someone and force myself to feel attraction - just like those who do feel attraction, can't force themselves to stop feeling attraction. They can only control their actions. But yeah, I also had horrible (sexual) intrusive thoughts due to my generalized anxiety disorder at some point, which did not really help. They got a bit better when I came into terms with my asexuality and aromanticism, but sometimes they still come at me and it's never fun, but at least they're not as strong as what they used to be.

*(Unless if you can count that as sexual harrasment when, CW, I was 11 and a classmate was "into" me and tried to touch my face and talk "sweet things" to me but made it into a show despite me being uncomfortable and usually crying cos as a neurodivergent I didn't know how else to react.)

But anyway, back to the topic. So for years I understood asexuality as sex-repulsion, but I guess it's because I, well, am a sex-repulsed ace. So if I'm sex-repulsed, why would I then look at someone and feel something if I'm repulsed by the thing anyway? Like, it probably can't get any simpler than this :D And I know today that it's not as simple anymore. But that was 2008, at school (in ~2005) they only talked about gays a little, on one page in a sex.ed. book that otherwise was maybe 100 pages long. Only one page. About gays. And it was basically "Some boys like boys or some girls like girls and it's totally fine." and that was it, but the overall assumption was that everyone likes someone. And also there were no romantic orientations. Liking someone = both sexually and romantically. Not liking = not a thing except when you were depressed or otherwise mentally ill, or autistic or mentally disabled (which is a SUPER ableist take btw). I don't remember teachers ever talking about this, but it could also just be my adhd, maybe they did mention, but I just don't remember. At least in my notebooks there is no mention of this, everything was very much heteronormative and amatonormative, and also there was only two genders. I don't remember ever hearing about transgender people, apart from foreign documentaries and in them they were always portrayed as some shocking freaks of the nature, and loads of wrong terms were used. And this is still the mid and late 2000s we're talking about!

So this takes us to the other part aka aromanticism. Back then asexuality was not only sex-repulsion but also merged together with aromanticism, because people didn't talk about romantic orientations yet. So asexuality was not only sex-repulsion, but also you simply just not wanting a relationship. Again, nothing about attraction, just someone who did not care about sex nor relationships. A "forever single", if you will.

This was already annoying me a lot back then because I was really annoyed by sex "running the world". I was so angry because why is asexual the only sexuality that doesn't like sex? All the other sexualities had the assumption of them always wanting to have sex. Like, even think about someone who is straight, you hear that someone is straight, and you automatically assume(d) that oh they're into sex too cos why wouldn't they be. This was really driving me nuts because I was sure there are people who want to have a partner, but never want to have sex! I was still experiencing crushes, and I knew for sure it was nothing sexual, so it annoyed me that just because I'm asexual, it means I can't have crushes. That's why I actually called myself as "asexual bi" for a while, because "bisexual" indicated I would have not been sex-repulsed and I wanted to point out that I'm NOT into sexual things, at all - and remember that this was still the late 2000s or early 2010s and I had not heard of romantic orientations yet! So I was up to something, there just were no terms for that yet! Today that would be called bi-/panromantic asexual.

I haven't been able to track the exact date or even year when did I figure out I'm aromantic, or when did I hear about romantic orientations for the first time. From the messages I've been able to find, I was already in my early 20s. Aka somewhere around maybe 2011-2013. In those, I have still been wondering what I am or if I even want to have a relationship, not being really able to tell what I wanted or didn't want. Again, no one told me romantic orientations are about ATTRACTION and not about whether you have commitment issues or not (this as a half-joke, cos I have severe commitment issues with everything :D I need to feel free!).

Anyway, I do remember my key moment with aromanticism, or the "aromantic awakening" as you could call it too, was when I was 17 or 18. Or maybe I was older? I don't know, I have time blindness. Anyway, I had this one online friend I had a "crush" on (I think it was just undiagnosed adhd's person hyperfixation) and I even told her about it. Everything just is super shady, from those years, I was not really on my best and there are so many overlapping memories that feel like different alternative universes instead of memories on a same timeline. Anyway, I just remember at some point thinking about this girl and I thought about some "romantic" stuff, like kissing, and I just remember my brain going "NOOOOOPE!" I had wanted to meet with her some day so bad, but when I started thinking about actually meeting with her, I started to nope the fuck out. All I had in my head was awkward embarrassing "first kiss" scenarios from movies and I just was not having it! I basically went "lol I guess I'm aro too, then XD" but I still don't remember when did I have this realization. Was I 17? Or was I, say, 22? I guess I need to go through my old MSN Messenger and Skype convos some day to investigate this further because I really want to know. I couldn't even find anything from my Tumblr from those times (I registered here in 2011), but I don't know if that's just me not tagging or Tumblr search functioning normally (aka it never finds anything).

But yeah, I am touch-repulsed. And kiss-repulsed, and romance-repulsed, too, (unless it's my OTP we're talking about). I'm still not exactly sure if I'm touch repulsed because I'm aromantic, or if I'm aromantic because I'm touch-repulsed. I only know that because of my sensory issues (I'm neurodivergent), I have never liked touching nor being touched. Even as a little kid I hated hugs and never liked sitting on anyone's lap. I only tolerated my parents, mainly my mom, because they were my safe place as an extremely shy baby/toddler/kid, who was especially wary about men. I can't explain the latter, but there was something about adult men that caused me (as a baby) to hide my face against my mom's shoulder if they talked to me. I did that to everyone I didn't know, but especially to men I didn't know. No idea why.

I also remember how my siblings loved to sit on people's laps and were always climbing onto their laps, and I didn't like this. And once my (late) grandma was so touched when she asked me if I want to sit on her lap (I was maybe 5-7?) and I agreed just to make her happy. I still remember how it felt, and I did not like it at all, but it still made my grandma so happy that I THINK she almost cried when she told my mom I actually agreed to sit on her lap. I'm not sure how real this last part of the memory is because I was so young. But I do remember thinking I do that for a change because I knew my grandma would be happy.

So yeah, my touch-repulsion is not exactly a new thing but just something that has been a part of my personality forever. But is that the core reason for why I only feel aesthetic attraction? I never look at people and feel like I wanna touch. More of the opposite, the idea of having to touch them or them touching me makes me go "eeewww". If you have seen that video of a gibbon shaking their whole body after seeing a rat in their exhibit? That's what I feel like when I think about touching or being touched, in just any way, also platonically.

The only time I feel "sensual attraction" is when I see photos or videos of animals. The urge to pet a tiger is insane. But the feel of another human's skin or muscle (or hair or whatever) is very repulsive to me.

I still remember how disgusting it felt to e.g. sit on a cousin's lap. We sometimes used swings like this, and somehow I was aware of it not feeling nice, but still not doing anything about it cos it also was okay? Only later I have realized I really, really loathe the texture of human skin. Or the warmth and overall feeling of a human body. For example, I was at least 7 or younger when I sat on my cousin's lap while we were sitting on a swing and STILL, after over 20 years, I have that all in my body memory. I remember how the thigh bone felt under my legs and how freaking disgusting the muscles felt inbetween. Also at school, on the 1st grade, we often had to walk in a line of twos after the teacher and hold the pair's hand so no one gets lost. My then-friend had so ridiculously dry skin that the only thing I could think of was how I felt like throwing up because the skin on her palm felt so damn disgusting. I still can feel that in my hand when I think of it. That's one of my "core memories" from 1st grade - how disgusting the human skin can feel like.

I don't think I have ever felt actual romantic attraction towards anyone. It's really difficult to differentiate because as I mentioned, I get those people hyperfixations easily. I guess it's the same hormones but I never really want to do anything with them? I guess it's the emotional intimacy that "attracts" me and what gets me excited, but I'm still not exactly sure what emotional intimacy means to me. I don't exactly fall into the QPR category either, in a way I wish I had a best friend whose best friend also I would be, and that neither would have anyone else who is "better" than the other one. But the only intimacy there would be emotional intimacy, nothing else. And I need my freedom so I wouldn't move in with any human being, either.

Sometimes I've thought my "ideal partner" would be a robot because if I get annoyed, I could just turn it off and stuff into a closet and leave there, and if I felt like not having a "relationship" anymore, I could just remove the harddrive and destroy the robot, or both. That way I would be the only one with the memories, and I wouldn't have to worry about someone out there knowing things about me, things that only the closest can know, and I'm really afraid of letting anyone close in case it won't work (also with regular friendships) because I can't stop thinking about how much I wish I had that MIB memory cancelling device so that they would again know almost nothing, or at least much much less about me. There's already one friendship that ended a few years ago and I still keep thinking about how I wish I could take everything back and how I wish they delete(d) all the files and drawings and stuff I sent them. There are so many things about me I wish I never told them, now as we are no longer friends. Back then it felt like "of course this is gonna last a lifetime!" but turns out that nope, not all friendships will.

I guess it's time to stop rambling. This post is really long already. If you read it all the way here: congrats. And thanks. You probably just wasted your time but... that's on you I guess :DDD But yeah, some thoughts from a 30-years-old aroace who has been aware of their identity for at least or almost 10 years now.

Talking amongst ourselves - fanfic writer interviews: @ihni

(Originally, these interviews were done more conversationally, but this interview is a LONG one! So I edited it down for tumblr. You can read the whole unedited, uncut interview over on a03! There are pictures involved. :)

My real name is Moa, but I go by Ihni online. On AO3, I have an account under Ihni (https://archiveofourown.org/users/Ihni) but that's for rhymes (and doodles). I only wrote rhymes/poetry for a long time, and when I started writing fic, I wanted to put that under another pen name. I was NOT comfortable writing stories for YEARS. Now, though, I don't care. So, I write fics under the pen name Thei (https://archiveofourown.org/users/thei/).

It's all Stranger Things, these days. Harringrove (because I love the fandom and I like the two of them interacting) and Billy-centric (because I love his character, SO MUCH).

I am ace and aro, so my fics tend to not contain any sex (I have ALLUDED to it a couple of times, but that's basically as far as I go). I am also just as happy to write fics without any romantic or sexual relationships at all. Billy and Steve can be buddies only, as far as I'm concerned.

How do you feel about being aroace when so much of fanfic is all about romance and sex?

Ihni:

I live by the tried and tested rule of "don't like, don't read".

There is a lot of romance in our fandom, for sure. But it's not like it's lovey-dovey IN OUR FACE romance, you know? 97% of Harringrove fics are two dumb boys who are bad at communication and who can't deal with Feelings. And I fucking live for that! Also, even the lovey-dovey fluffy romance stuff is cute, when it's them. I may not want a relationship for myself, but I don't mind at all if the boys are in one! (If they want it, they deserve it <3)

And as for sex ... well. I can read about sex, if it's well written or if it furthers the plot. If it's too graphic, I tend to scroll past it though, or just skim through it. It doesn't... give me a lot? I guess. Like, it's not like I read "smut" in the tags and go "oooh I have to read this!" - rather the opposite, in fact. I can read it, but it's not something I actively look for, and when I stumble upon it, I don't always read all of it. If I know the writer, I'll probably read through it to honor their work, though.

I just won't ever leave a "omg that was so hot!" comment! XD If someone expects that from me, they'll be disappointed (and I'm constantly terrified of disappointing or offending people for NOT commenting on their smut).

Basically, I am the master of my own fandom experience, and if something makes me uncomfortable I will keep away from it. Simple as that.

More people should live by that rule.

What's your writing process like?

Ihni:

Uuuuuuuugh.

That's an interpretation of my writing process.

No, but.

I usually get SUPER INSPIRED to write a specific scene, or concept... and THAT part goes well, but then I have to build a STORY around it, and that takes SUCH A LONG TIME and SO MUCH EFFORT!

And also, usually, it gets out of hand.

I usually have to force myself to get the words in, honestly. And also, I get real tired of what I'm writing, real fast. So I have to force myself to finish (I have a few WIPs that are more than a year in the making...) before moving on to other things. (And I usually write the other things inbetween, anyway.)

I get easily distracted, when I write. Like, actually sitting down and writing takes an hour and a half. Then I MIGHT write for like twenty minutes, lol.

Cold Turkey Writer was a godsend XD.

If I have internet on while I'm writing, not a lot will be written, let's just ... let's just say that.

How do you edit?

Ihni:

HAHAHAHAHAHAA

Erm.

Well.

Sometimes, I read through it once, and change a few things, and let that be it.

In a couple of cases, for the longer ones, I have actually made an effort to read through it more than once. (The problem being that by then, I'm so sick of it that I will skim through it just to get it over with.)

A couple of times, a friend has read through it for me, and given me pointers. Which is VERY HELPFUL! But they've offered to do it for me, I would never ask it of someone.

And about the editing process ... I check for spelling mistakes, or when something sounds wrong, or looks wrong ... and then I fix it, so it looks and sounds better in my head. I don't know. That's editing, right?

What fanfic authors do you admire?

Ihni:

In the Harringrove fandom, I have to mention LEMONLOVELY, because I'm in love with the way she writes Billy, and the way she's shaping her fics as she goes, and the way her attention to detail brings a whole mood (I am OBSESSED with her "Words Left Unsaid" fic, and am probably that fic's biggest fan).

LYMRICKS, because fucking hell, they sure can write a fic that draws you in. There's something about long sentences in combination with short sentences that really makes them easy to read, and the language is like a punch to the gut, at times.

CALLIEB, because I love their stories and I'm currently following "Second Thoughts" and I love how they write everyone like ... like they're holding their breath, waiting for something.

And I'm not even gonna mention any others by name because I'm terrible with names and I'm bound to forget someone and I'm just, I don't want to do that. Our fandom is full of talented writers, and I just. If I've commented on your fic, I read through all of it and I liked it. If I haven't - well, I HAVE been writing more lately = less time to read, and I have like 100 fic tabs open on all of my devices ... I hope to get there, some time!

In other fandoms, let me mention PeaceHeather (for how they write Loki and that world), aloneintherain (such good whump!), isaDanCurtisproduction (the absolute best Spideypool!) and gaelicspirit (who writes lovely angsty whumpy Musketeers fics). Like. Just to mention 0.01%, or something.

I don't think any of them, particularly, have impacted my style - because I don't HAVE a style - but I soak up every word of every fanfic I ever read, and if one sentence is a particularly pretty string of words, I will copy & paste it into a word document that is now 170 pages long, or screenshot it to keep it forever. ❤️

What's your favorite story of yours?

What's your favorite line you've ever written?

Ihni:

Like, in what SENSE? Even though I know my writing isn't up to par, they're still my babies. Still my creations. I love them in different ways! Like. I love "Coming Back" because it was the longest I had written back then, and it's probably the one I am most pleased about, writing-wise, and it's also the one I went through and edited the most. So it feels like the one I worked the most on.

I love "Toy Soldiers" because it was a totally self-indulgent piece of writing that I wrote for the joy of it, and because I wanted to read it and no one else was about to write it for me.

I love "About Apologies" because something about it pleases me, it was an experiment that didn't fail, and I like it more and more with time.

I love "Less of a mistake, more of a miscalculation" because I had fun while writing it, and it turned out kind of like I wanted it to, plot-wise.

I love "Actions and reactions", because I had no idea what I was doing back then, but I still did it, and somehow it got long and I still don't know how that happened.

And I realise that this makes me sound a little self-centered, but I worked hard on them. I love them, even if they're my ugly and imperfect babies. And even if I cringe if I re-read certain parts XD

I guess my least favorite story of mine (and I'm guessing we're talking Stranger Things things here?) is "Not unusual" because a) I never re-read it and b) it was the start of something that I have to actually FINISH at some point and ugh, that was not the original plan. If we're talking least favorite stories in all fandoms, then definitely "In which there are mistakes made", which was a Teen Wolf fic, and the reason why I don't do WIPs anymore. The last chapter was written simply to fucking END it, and ugh, I hate it.

The favorite line I've ever written ...? I don't know. Are we talking in fic? Because I write my best stuff in comments, honestly. :p I don't think I have an answer for that one, actually. Sorry :S

What part of writing is easiest for you?

What part of writing is hardest for you?

Ihni:

Easiest? Dialogue. I like dialogue. Like, as a non-English speaker I can at least imagine a plausible exchange of words, and banter, and make it sound somewhat realistic, I imagine.

Hardest? The rest. Like, some people are just fucking WIZARDS with words, can write these long descriptive sentences that perfectly sets the mood for when a character gracefully moves across the room ... whereas I am just, "He stood up and walked over. End of fucking story."

What do you do when you're struggling for inspiration?

Ihni:

Give up?

Or do something else.

Or go and read. (That's basically the same as giving up.)

Or, if I'm still writing, I go to another part of the story and write THAT, and hope that I'll feel like connecting the two pieces, later.

Inspiration is a bitch.

Who introduced you to fandom and when?

Ihni:

Oh god. I am old. I don't remember.

I started writing stories when I was real young, and I was always reading something. I started writing stories with my friends when I was a teenager. Then we discovered the internet (yes, this was around the time when we got internet access in school and at home, told you I was old!) and when doing that, I guess we found more like-minded people.

Fanfics ... weren't an organized thing, back then. But I've been reading them, and been in fandoms, ever since I discovered that there were people online who liked the same things that I liked.

I would say, actively, from maybe around 19-20 years old? Like, that was ACTIVE fandom-ing.

What is your advice to fellow writers?

How often do you jump between fandoms?

How long have you been writing?

Ihni:

As a WRITER, I am not the best person to give advice to writers, I think. I'd rather TAKE advice than give it, at this point.

As a READER, my advice is to WRITE, WRITE, WRITE, because you are doing a good thing and you are creating a version of a world that is yours, versions of characters that you can shape into anything, and SOMEONE out there will love you for it (probably me).

I jump between fandoms ... hmm, as a WRITER? Seldom. Billy's my jam and I'm not moving.

As a READER? All the time. I mean, I'm pretty deep into Harringrove and Billy and Stranger Things, but sometimes I need something light-hearted, and then I go back to some of my basic fandoms, and read something else. I will never run out of things to read.

And how long have I been writing? FOREVER. I wrote when I was young, and thought I was going to be an author (wrote in Swedish, back then). Then I wrote when I was a teen, for fun. Then I stopped writing. Then I started writing rhymes, in English, because it was a craft I could do and train in, and it was short pieces. And only in recent years (very recent), have I started writing fics. And now, I write long-ass fics in English, so I guess I have at least come a long way!

Why do you write?

I just sat and stared at the screen for a good ten seconds.

I'd say that it differs.

Sometimes, I write because I want to READ something and no one has written it (or is going to).

Sometimes, I write because I want a very specific thing or feeling, and it doesn't exist yet.

Sometimes, I write because I am inspired.

Sometimes, I write because I want to.

Sometimes, I write because of a deadline.

Sometimes, I write because there's something in my head that Won't Leave Me The Fuck Alone until I get it out.

Sometimes, I write for fun.

Sometimes, I write because I want to hurt.

Sometimes, I write because I need to.

Sometimes, I write because I want to become better at it; learn; reach towards the writers whose work I love.

And sometimes, I just sit and stare at a document, don't write a single fucking word, and go watch a movie instead.

Today I updated my Better Than AO3 Statistics sheet. If you, like me, are in the center of a van diagram with interests labeled Fanfiction, Marketing, and Geeky Numbers, then you might find the results interesting.

Sheet orientation:

Leftmost column is all my works on AO3 to date. Some are podfic+fic, and some are just podfic.

Hits, Kudos, Comment Threads, Bookmarks and Subscriptions is straight from AO3.

Chance of Kudos/Comment/Bookmark/Subscription is calculated by dividing the kudos/comment/etc by the number of hits the work received. Exception is the Chance of Comment column, which is Comments divided by Hits divided by 2, because I always respond to comments on my fics, and AO3 counts my own comments in the same stat.

Totals at the bottom is just to make me feel shiny.

Average shows the overall chance of someone leaving kudos, making a comment, subscribing or bookmarking after opening one of my stories. Useful for bolstering my sense of self-worth.

Bold numbers are the winners in their column. Green bold numbers are the winner when taking into account number of hits.

“Xina, why did you do this crazy thing?”

I made the sheet because, while AO3 does a great job counting kudos and comments and such, it doesn’t take into account that some fics are simply seen more than others. In the chart above, if you only look at the number of kudos, it seems that, conicidentally, my two stories Second Spin and Silencing Sirius are tied at 577 kudos. However, when you take into account that Silencing Sirius has WAY more hits, we see that proportionally, Second Spin has more kudos/hit. So people are more likely to leave kudos on that fic after reading, which, by one way of thinking, shows it is more loved than Silencing Sirius. "What do these dorky numbers show anyways?”

1. The Chance Of numbers are low overall. Even for the highest stat, that there is a 16% chance of people leaving kudos on Second Spin after opening the story, is pretty low. I believe this is because Hits just shows how many people opened the fic, not how many people finished reading it. Some people likely look at the tags/summary and realize it’s not the fic for them and close it. Or they never finish, or they finish and decide it was TERRIBLE, or they are just chickens who don’t leave kudos (That used to be me, lol. “But if I leave a kudos then the Internet would know what I like!!”)

2. Also, Hits counts every visit to the story. A user might visit a story multiple times if they really like it. A lot of my stories have explicit porn so it’s definitely possible that certain users are revisiting them many times for, ah, educational purposes. But they can only leave kudos once (curse you, AO3!).

3. Longer works are more likely to get kudos. I didn’t include the word counts in the chart, but Second Spin and Go East are both novel-length, and they are both much more likely to get comments/kudos etc. However, they are also both a bit low on hits compared to other stories. Conclusion: shorter works get clicked on more often, but longer works get more author-appreciation. :)

4. Recs is the most powerful thing affecting stats. Looking at the stats, I can draw several conclusions about what people like, considering the content of each story.

People like porn (Silencing Sirius, Powdered Donuts, Second Spin, Two Can Play).

People like long stories with world building (Go East).

People like light, fluffy things (The Best Medicine, Something True).

People like short romances with a nice sexy payout (PWNS, which is Problems with Narrative Structure and the Rules of Many Engagement).

Look at that...people like a lot of things. So why do some stories do better than others? Rec lists! My most read story by a factor of many is Silencing Sirius (short for The Ridiculous But Overall Enjoyable Consequences of Silencing Sirius Black). Is it because it is nice and short, has porn, is funny, and centers around a popular trope (locked room)? Sure, partially. But really, I think it’s because it has been recced multiple times and is in the archive of places like Wolfstar Warehouse. Thank you rec lists!! 5. If I want to be negative, I could look at things that don’t get love and hypothesize about why. Most of the stuff at the bottom of the list is podfic-only. They are works by other authors that I have made into podfic. Some of them are old and my sound quality is iffy. Podfic is just not as popular as written fic. That’s fine, podfic is still badass and I’m not about to stop doing it. 6. People like their main pairings. MTTL also gets an astonishing lack of love, especially considering it contains excellent porn, if I do say so myself. But there is an obvious reason. The pairings scare people off! It’s a modern-day AU with real-world-style polyamory, and the pairings are all over the place instead of simple Wolfstar like the rest of my work. It’s just different, and apparently people aren’t looking for that (except for all my fellow adorable poly people that comment on that story). My most unpopular work would be Bullfinch’s Mythology. It has the lowest hits and the fewest kudos, and it is also been on AO3 the longest, so that’s really saying something. Bullfinch’s Mythology is a no-porn short podfic about Snape making friends. Apparently, no one wants to listen to that. I find this hilarious. Conclusion: no one likes Snape. 8. People bookmark long stories. I think there are two reasons for this. One, probably a lot of people go, oh that looks cool, I’ll Read It Later. Two, once people read it and like it, they think of it like a book. They want to read it again someday. They want to put it on their mental bookshelf. They make a bookmark. Note that this only tracks AO3 bookmarks, not tumblr archives, pinboard bookmarks, etc. 9. People subscribe when you post incomplete works, or when you tell them more is coming. My story with the most subscriptions is Go East, which I posted one chapter at a time, so of course people subscribed so they would get updates. I never post works until they are complete, and that was the only time I posted the chapters one at a time, so subscriptions are not a very meaningful area of data for me. Also, it took me stupidly long to realize that I should leave a note at the end of stories if I intend to write more in that universe, then make a series on AO3 so they can subscribe to that. Duh! “What does it all MEAN?” The point of this is not to create a formula for writing the Perfect Fic that gets the max kudos and comments. These stats are just for fun, and to try to make sense of an unknowable universe. I have to admit I feel a bit less excited about making podfic of other people’s works, considering how little love those projects get and how much work they are. And I might go looking for a few more ways for people to hear about my less well-known works. Rec lists and shoutouts on social networks like tumblr really are powerful. But really, this whole concept of writing/recording stories and posting them for free is about fun. I definitely enjoy the love that comes my way, especially when something gets recced and the loves just explodes everywhere, but that is only about 15% of my motivation in making stories. The writing itself is what is fun. So my advice to all of you that made it all the way down here to the bottom is to just keep writing what you love. Rock on!

could you share more about your law school environment?:o i want to go into law also, but not big law. i’ve never heard of a school with a program like yours, but it sounds really nice

Yeah, I like it a lot aha. I really don’t think a traditional law school environment would have been for me. I hear some horror stories about other law schools and I am genuinely appalled. I think my non-traditional school is a huge part of the reason I enjoy law school more than most of law school tumblr. It’s a very different experience when you don’t feel like you’re being attacked on all sides by your peers.

(As a reminder, I am willing to share where I go to school, just not to people who ask on anon!! I feel weird publishing it on my main blog, but I’ll tell you privately. So if you want to know the name, message me off anon and I’ll get back to you, but probably not until tomorrow - it’s already past my bedtime)

My school is extremely politically liberal and extremely public interest-oriented, so it tends to be a lot of like-minded students working for causes they’re interested in. There are ALSO a good number of big law students, don’t get me wrong, like all law schools, we do send most of our graduates into private practice, but we also graduate like three times as many public interest students as your average law school, so we’re considered a “public interest school” (I was a tour guide last summer so I vaguely remember these things). Our students also have a public interest requirement to graduate and all 1L students complete a year-long social justice project with a team of like ten other students. Mine was EXTREMELY cool - I worked with the New England Innocence Project to determine if an applicant for their services was actually factually innocent - but I’ve heard some people had projects that well, sucked lol.

Our students aren’t ranked and our grading system is extremely odd. Instead of a letter grade, we get a written evaluation of our performance. We didn’t use to get grades at all, but they added honorifics a few years before I started because it looks better to big law employers, I think lol. But it’s not a numeric letter grade, so we don’t have GPAs. Local employers are familiar with the system so it doesn’t impede anyone trying to get a job in this area, but I have heard that not having a GPA or a rank can be an impediment to getting a job outside of MA. But as I mentioned in my last post, it makes the school a far more collaborative and far less cutthroat competitive environment. Students aren’t stepping on each other to succeed. Most professors don’t even grade on a curve.

Possibly to make up for our weird grades, we have a ridiculously huge emphasis on practical training. For a long time we were the #1 practical training school in the country (we might still be? I genuinely haven’t looked) Our first year runs on a normal law school calendar, and then we transition to a quarter system for 2L and 3L and are in school year-round. We alternate between classes and internships on a quarterly basis, so by the time you graduate, you have four quarters of upper-level classes and four full-time internships. So 2x internships as other students. But that comes with sacrifices because our academic quarters are shorter and let me just tell you, completing what should be 15 weeks worth of course work in eleven weeks is ~~~~~not great~~~~~ But I mean, when I graduate I’ll have 4+ (can also do part-time internships for independent study) legal internships on my resume alongside all the other typical law school experiences, like law review and clinics. Oh, and our 1st-year project technically counts as a clinic? Anyway, yeah, lots of experience. That’s a part of why I chose this school specifically, actually - I felt really unprepared for the working world when I graduated college and I swore to myself that I wouldn’t let that happen again with law school.

If you know you really want to do big law, this probably isn’t the school for you. Like I said, we send a good amount of students into big law every year, but I’m sure it’s easier to get your foot in the door to certain places when you know…you have a GPA lol. But I want to do public interest work and public interest employers are WAY more lax about that kind of thing.

Truthfully, I haven’t shared many details about my school online because I know it’s non-traditional and I didn’t want anyone getting hyper salty that our grading system isn’t as draining as a traditional law school and roasting me for not getting a “real” law school experience or something. So I’ll just throw in here at the bottom that we do very well for ourselves. I have a competitive internship with a federal judge and each of my friends who is interested in big law landed summer associates for the summer. I’m hoping to clerk out of graduation and honestly, my prospects are looking great. Our ranking is average - not great, but certainly not terrible - but our admission stats are competitive and we have the second highest bar passage rate in the state, after Harvard, of course. We’ve got a ton of notable alumni - including some EXTREMELy exciting progressive politicians and DAs - and our career services office is actually very helpful. Cold calling is still terrible and law review is just as back-breaking at my school as it is anywhere else and classes are equally rigorous, we just all tend to work together, instead of against each other, which makes things more bearable.

1. What is your nickname? People call me Kat and Kath usually! The Kath originally was just an online nickname but then my boyfriend’s coworker called me it this weekend so it’s an official one now! I just let people decide if they want to use a nickname I always go by my full name otherwise

90. What makes you angry? EVERYTHING. Incompetent coworkers who don’t respect my job or process. Republicans across the board and a shit ton of establishment Democrats. That our Earth is dying. 97. Are you religious? Not massively, I grew up Lutheran and then went to a couple of different churches. Went through a hard atheist phase in middle school. Now I’m most comfortable identifying with the term agnostic theistic since long story short I’m not against the concept of a higher being, I believe things happen for a reason, I’ve always believed in energies, which can be connected to meditation and praying. I’m currently researching wicca and witchcraft though I’m probably far off from identifying with either of those. Oops that was long I have a lot of thoughts.

Just trying to get to know Essie better, ignore me! Will add more later.

1. Does s/he enjoy puzzles?

Not particularly. Even given nothing to do, Essie would probably prefer much anything else.

2. Does s/he enjoy education?

I don’t even know if she had a real education. I’m sure she learned more on her own means. I think she’s pretty neutral on learning. It helps better you but she doesn’t see it as fun but neither does she see it as terrible.

3. What is his/her sexual orientation?

Pansexual Panromantic.

4. Is s/he right-handed, left-handed, or ambidextrous?

Right-handed but ambidextrous casting spells cuz, well, ya almost gotta be..

5. Is s/he fashionable?

Essie don’t give a fuck. She wears what she likes, or wears what is suitable to the weather, or wears shit just to piss people off. So probably not.

6. What is their favorite food(s)?

Okay, here goes: smoked salmon on a bed of greens, herb roast pheasant, venison steak cooked rare to med-rare with roasted potatoes, garlic clam soup, mushroom and leek stew, berry tarts with mint, stuffed trout, pickled duck eggs, sharp cheeses, sunflower seeds, almonds, honeycakes, and she has a preference for drinking spiced ale, orchid wines, and elven made wines that are sweeter and aromatic. I can also see her having a taste for tea, particularly with honey, and sweet or spiced ciders. Maybe some hard spirits in a group atmosphere.

7. Has s/he ever broken a bone?

Nope, not yet at least.

8. Any interests or hobbies?

She enjoys magic, even using it to make kids happy. She enjoys dancing, secretly. Gambling maybe, uh... going on adventures obviously. Will add more if I think of it; she’s lived a life of survival so she probably doesn’t hide many hobbies.

lmao no and she knows that. Ms. Throw-It-All-In-The-Bag.

No food, only liquids. Try laying down. If it doesn’t stop after a while, try walking around slowly in hopes to agitate self enough to just hurl.

Essätha Medüza - the last name is a kick on Medusa from mythology.

She’s a wanna-be-extro. Doesn’t trust others well, but has a desire to fit in and hang with others. At the moment she’s honestly more intro by nature though.

Probably okay. Still prone to burning food from time to time lol whoops. But for the most part it’ll be edible, probably just not super tasty.

14. Did s/he have any friends growing up?

Yes! I plan on doing art for some of ‘em eventually.

Essie likes a good rainfall. Probably doesn’t mind being caught in them, even ‘bad’ storms, so long as it isn’t snow. Too damn cold.

Nope. Maybe scars. //bricked// Nah because of her lifestyle, she’s not one to gather trinkets or stuff. Necessities and useful stuff only really.

I don’t know... uh, music for dancing. Sunsets and sunrises. The idea that life can get better. Transformation/growing.

Opal: (kind stranger) Orange furry cat woman. Seems to follow her own moral code of good which is pure and generous. Pretty kind.

Kraw: (teacher) Bird man of tans, reds, and dark browns/blacks. Grumpy but has a good heart. May try eating you if you’re an animal or can turn into an animal but otherwise nice. Drinker but a sad drinker when he does.

Solace: (ally/best friend) Outgoing, bubbly, considerate reddish-pink tiefling with obsidian eyes and violet blue-toned hair. She’s a rebel but is caring despite her dicey past. Essie considers her a better person than herself.

Phoenix: (aquitaine) Lady crazypants. Charcoal skin with scar-like markings that glow like lava flow when she’s using her powers. Fiery colored eyes and hair. Very much gives a masculine vibe. Will kill you with no regrets. Something’s wrong with her but she is willing to work with others for her own gain which is relatable.

Bretella: (frienemy) Considered a trustworthy ally. Green skinned redhead with golden eyes. Tends to weary flashy or seductive clothing. Will bail you out of a situation but patronize you later. High self-esteem.

Miz'ri: (enemy) A lost friend. Light grey skin, white hair, pale lilac eyes. Essie wishes that the millions of things that went wrong between them hadn’t. She hopes there’s still godo to be found in Miz’ri. A sad, broken soul.

Hepsiba: (mother) Truly the most beautiful person in existence. Warm, loving, considerate, gentle, sweet, gorgeous. Hepsiba is gone now, but her memory is still a vibrant light of warmth. Essie probably looks to the stars and likes to think her mom is up there, staring down at her. Mom was an auburn-skinned beauty with brown eyes.

Tyfiell: (father) Never met him. Mom spoke well of him, but Essie doesn’t think well of someone who ditched her mom. Said to be a dark-skinned Yuan-Ti Pureblood with dark eyes and a wicked smile. Rogue class.

22. How would s/he describe themself?

LOL nothing good unfortunately... She thinks she’s physically ugly due to how she was treated by others when she was young. She doesn’t find redeemable qualities in herself too much, either. Resident snake lady would probably say “I don’t got time for this” if asked. “I’m a scaly Yuan-Ti woman, hi.”

23. What is his/her birthday? Star sign? Do they fit it?

April 12, which would make their zodiac the Aries. It sounds semi fitting, as they’re labeled as ‘courageous, confident, short-tempered, and impulsive’ but like anything else, there’s some manners that aren’t perfectly fitting (optimistic, aggressive, etc).

24. How good is s/he at mending clothes?

She doesn’t know the Mending ability lol! Kidding aside, I don’t believe it’s her hobby or anything. I mean, if you look at some of her clothes, they’ve got tears and threads pulled free. Probably not.

25. How does s/he react to someone spilling something on them?

Depends on the atmosphere? 90% of the time she’ll realize it’s an accident, jump when it happens, and then request the server or whomever fetch something to help clean up the mess- not impolitely just with some urgency in her tone. She’d probably only have a .1% chance going off an the server because hey, shit happens, but if she’s in a bad mood already she may snap at anyone around she’s unhappy with at the moment.

26. How does s/he react to being approached by law enforcement?

‘Oh shit time to run they’re probably after me’ is her thought processing.

Nah, not really her cup of tea.

Essie can’t play, but she probably enjoys winds and strings for daily life, but the occasionally ‘sick beat’ of a big band of instruments to dance to would be A+.

Admittedly, Essatha enjoys hoarding funds. As someone who grew up with little, she’s a bit of a hoarder and is very unlikely to misplace even a copper piece. If she splurges, she’s likely drunk or enjoying a ‘luxury’ she didn’t have much as a child (ex: tarts), or items useful for survival, combat, friends, etc.

31. 3-5 random pieces of trivia about them that doesn’t come up often?

Essie loves music; especially pieces with a soft melody. She grew a garden once. Lastly she has had no real schooling; she’s mostly self-taught or listened in on others or hired other’s to teach her. This might be one of the reasons why she’s a bit of a slow reader.

32. Does s/he prefer dawn or dusk?

She feels more ‘lively’ during dawn but enjoys dusk for the twilight glow, the stars, etc. So both with maybe a slight preference for dusk.

Unless it’s not someone she’s close with, in which case, she’d use their ‘crush’ to her advantage. If it’s someone she has a crush on as well, she’ll blush and look away. Be shy. You’d probably need to convince her to speak or look at you again cuz she’d be like ‘?! they like me? me???’

Desserts, rain, the outdoors (especially earthy scents).

With ‘starter’: Serperior, Weavile, Houndoom, Phantump, Dragalge, Togetic.

She can’t sing well but that won’t stop her when she has the urge. Obviously she can act, or she wouldn’t play people so well lol.

Yes she drinks, no she doesn’t do drugs (unless medicines in the d&d count? I don’t know what sort of drugs they have), no she doesn’t smoke.

Yeah actually! She wants kids to have a happy youth, unlike what she had, so she’s willing to do things to entertain and help kiddos. If a kid cons her, she’d try to even hunt them down purely to see if there’s any way she could help them.

Depends. Either antisocial or exceptional flirt depending on what’s going on to the average person.

Judging by conversations with Heather, she’d be hecka frustrated. What are feelings. I don’t know what this is. Why do I care about you so much please explain this to me? And once she figures out that it’s love she’s feeling... that explains the confusion, the butterflies in her stomach, the awkward shyness even she couldn’t explain when she reacted to them being nice but... I must now blush... and hide my face...

Time to unbored herself by doing something. Hunting, pestering others, flirting, gambling, anything but sitting there jiggin her leg if she can help it. Restlessness doesn’t fit her.

Essie would probably really like Tiana for her go-getter attitude. She probably feels most like Rapunzel, locked away from the world and badly treated by her ‘caretaker(s)’ (the city she grew up in) but now she’s free and adventuring and seeking her own trues and fulfilling her curiosities. Who she’d probably most aspire to be I guess would be Moana (not qualified as a Disney princess yet, but admirable all the same. Moana went on an adventure, conquered it, found herself, defeated the big bad, etc) or Merida (they share like-characteristics, and Merida didn’t need a man to complete her, though family/friends it reveals are important).

First d&d campaign. Kept getting stuck between a handful of races. Finally got down to 4, then 3, then 2. Had to wait and see if Ammy would approve Yuan-Ti Purebloods. Got approved. Essie’s only known family was her mother. She was very close with her, sadly, her mom passed when she was young, probably 3-4ish. She never knew her dad. Her relationship with chosen family is positive. Details on ‘chosen’ family will be thought up further later, as I’m confident she’ll come to consider her traveling companions like family.

Her mum (deceased), and eventually probably Sul and the group. I feel she’ll particularly enjoy Cackle and Adela but we’ll see~

Harsh livin of survival all her life yo. Fighting for food, stealing to get by, learning how to use and deceive people to get things she needed and then eventually, things she wanted.

I have two piercings in each ear, just like the normal ones in the earlobe. I want to get tattoos, but they cost lots of money that I don’t have.

I have a strange fondness for tiger lilies. I think it’s because they grow wild near my house and it’s one of the few naturally orange flowers in the north east. Orange was my favorite color when I was younger.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy I have a pit bull/ German shepherd mix rescue dog names Tsula (pronounced soo-lah), and three shorthair cats, Maya (who is exclusively mine, she’s all black, down to her nose and toe beans), Sweet Pea (Maya’s mother, calico, and a fat asshole), and Battle Cat (the skinniest little pain in the butt who loves head skritches and everyone who had ever met him)

Hell yeah! I play guitar (not that I’ve had much time to play lately, sadly) and I sing a whole bunch. I’ll sing to myself mostly, but I also sing to my friend’s siblings and to the kids I babysit. I kind of have a thing where I “give” the kids a song that I sing for them. This two year old I babysit claimed “How Long” by the Eagles when I sang it quietly so she would nap. It was pretty cute, considering the kids only listen to classical music when their mother is around.

grape: if you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I want to visit my friend in all the corners of the world. I also want to go to Great Britain again, or camping somewhere where I could go stargazing, preferably when there’s also a meteor shower happening.

Well, I’m not sure if this really counts, but I love Repo! The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival. I need to rewatch both. I also like Oculus. Trouble is, I haven’t watched a lot of horror movies. I love them, but I don’t like watching them alone. I also tend to point out scientific inaccuracies so people don’t want to watch them with me. It’s quite the conundrum. Also, I will NEVER see IT. Clowns creep me out. I do really enjoy American Horror Story though (I know it’s TV but still).

Ha ha ha ha what the fuck is confidence? I guess it would be when my professors make note of how good my writing is. I had this one amazing guy for creative writing last semester, so I took his studies in young adult fiction class this semester. I got an A+ on my midterm because of a really well written essay (don’t know how that happened), as well as an A on a paper I almost completely bullshitted the night before it was due. He actually read a portion out loud to the class because I worded something about maturity very well (heh, I based it on my real life experiences). He’s always complimenting me, and keeps asking how my book is going (terribly, lol). So I guess I feel most confident when people compliment my work, not me.

I... I buy my clothes from walmart or I get a shit ton of hand me downs... Or I go to goodwill... Like I don’t have a clue what brands I like. “Comfy”. There we go.

I don’t wear perfume so I will replace this with my favorite candle scents: woodsy or beach-y. I also like stuff that smells like that fresh rain scent.

Both. Although I do lean more towards lace.

Tumblr. I can’t escape the hellsite. I had a twitter for like... three months and I only tweeted like a dozen times. People. I hate them, at least, most of them, but they fascinate me. However I refuse to become an anthropologist. I am hoping to be a medical type person, ideally a doctor. I’m basically Dr. House.

I’m a freaking cashier at a grocery store chain in the north east. That’s my job title.

That I can’t learn things, cause if you’re not in school/with some stupid piece of paper saying ‘you tested well congrats’ you’re adverse to learning. Not educated. Like I had lost my ability to even pass, or do anything. Mentally I was in a whole sort of other hell that nobody should ever know. I’ve got literal amnesia from how depressed I was. That while being told to absorb new information, trying but I couldn’t was hell.

The terrifying thought of the crowded graduation ceremony, hearing the name that made my skin crawl and yet another dumb piece of paper with that printed on it? Didn’t help. I think it can be lovely, that people certainly need to learn things and have that. That I admire people who pull through it/willingly go through intensive college,etc. Personally I’ll do my ged when I’m in a better place, or something but I chose life/hope to get better then and I still am putting getting better first.

Yeah, that's how you spell his name. I'm terrible with names as well, it's why I gotta keep repeating them or I'll forget lol1: What is your character's biggest fear?Migraine attacks. He gets them at random and after countless tests no one has any idea what sets them off or why. Besides the immeasurable amount of pain that can cause him to blackout, his blood pressure spikes and he gets really bad nosebleeds and what's worse is that after a migraine attack his night terrors and sleep paralysis act up even more which makes him freak out and often ends with him being sedated.After migraine attacks he's hit with some very heavy insomnia that can last a week and some odd days, which brings a whole new mess of problems and risks: the fast and erratic heartbeats, the schizophrenia-like symptoms, imbalance of hormones, memory loss, headaches, microsleeps, hallucinations and so on. The only thing that sorta helps is a chemically induced coma.2: What is your character's favorite memory?When he was a kid Loke and Alfr would always take him everywhere and would constantly play with him. Lexington just took him with him and tortured him. Why? Idk he's an abusive predator who hated his nephew more than anything else and the thought of Angelus still being alive and happy pissed him off.So after they found Angelus Jelani and Loke found out it was Lexington so Jelani went to find him. Spent a week torturing him and then killed him. He dropped what remained of Lexington at Angelus' grandmother's place and warned her that if anyone of them ever came near him again he'd personally kill her entire family in front of her and then turn her over to some Slayers.Angelus doesn't know Jelani did that.
