Presenting all the artists I have worked with on my author journey thus far. 🏳️‍🌈📚🎨
Because I'm Team Human, and always will be.
Lianne Peterson, fantasyspritestudio on Instagram, is also a crochet artist, which is how I first met her. Back in the day, I made crochet toys and sculptures, and she still does. One thing led to another, and after she read my first book, we collaborated on the Iverbourne Tarot project, which expanded to include other indie artists.
Then we did the special editions together, which includes the tarot art as full page illustrations, and the scene with Lythienne threatening her boytoy—Panrauth, I mean. Also, that fan art of Novak still makes my heart sing. The plant guy is Lysander from the Levena books, and also fan art that I treasure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@gagakumadraws has done so much work for me, this isn't even all of it. She is an absolute gem of a person and artist, and I'm so thankful to be able to call her my friend. There are the five Iverbourne cards, The Rebel Foxes cover, and so much Arlo and Thatch, from Phantom and Rook. There's the inside of the bookstore, and side characters like Silas (silver hair boi) and Arche.
Art not pictured are beautiful spice scenes, the outside of the bookstore, and a pirate play scene from Phantom and Rook. Oh, and a certain enby wolf shifter all tied up in knots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
@prince-peachie did some character art for me, depicting Novak as he first meet him and when the demon comes out to play. I first fell in love with Peachie's AFTG fan art, and I love everything he does!
The bottom left is Novak and Alvis on the ship, brought to life by @kislurysuje around the time Prince of Sylvan came out. It was one of my first printed pieces of gay art, and I love it so much.
The Moon is Eros from the Iverbourne series, and her card was created by @sholdthebus who I found on Tiktok. She does some amazing work, and has a Pride Armory! Think pride themed pins, like bisexual battle axes.
Tumblr media
And my beloveds, @crossroadart-seabear and @foxglovefaun
I love these covers so dearly. The colors, the emotion and detail. Bear did Phantom and Rook, and Fox did Matsdotter and Adrastus. I love that the colors of the sequel echo the first book, and while each artist has their own style, the books look like they belong together. They are both fantastic people, and beautiful artists.
Tumblr media
So yeah, fuck AI, and scream about your favorite artists. 🤘✨

JOOO you used to sell swords?? That's so cool!!! If you feel like reminiscing and using this as an opportunity to tell everyone about that very awsome sounding job, I would love to hear about it :D if not just take this as me being a tumblr mutual who wants to be your friend now even more 😂 swords are so cooool
I sure did! Oooh my god. You have no ide what sort of pandora's box you've opened. I love talking weaponry. I also spent an unreasonably long time trying to dig up old pics.
So i snatched this unreal job by a total accident. During uni, a friend of a friend of mine were preparing to go to study abroad for a few months and needed a temporary replacement. And when we met for the first time, half jokingly asked if i liked swords. Yes, yes i do find all kinds of blades incredibly sexy thank you very much. And not a lot of time later i was sitting behind the counter. And stayed there for roughly three years.
It was a sword and decorational weaponry shop. I mean it still is. But i may talk about it past tense because i'm not there anymore. 😭 We had like functional swords and daggers for HEMA and other traditional stuff. Lots and lots of katanas and a few wakizashis and tantos for martial arts or just for decour. We even had like the long ones.. what are they called.. odachi and nodachi! And that sort of spear like a guandao, naginata. There were khukri knives as well. Modern knives.. A lot of stuff. And then decorational stuff from movies, anime or video games for just to put on a wall or elevate a cosplay.
Even decorational fire arms up until modern stuff. Altho fire arms where strictly decorational items, manufactures in ways that they were safe and unchangable into usable stuff. And a fewfigures, jewellery and some tarot cards and some other nick-nacks that fit the theme.
I don't have access to my drives at the moment but i found some old pictures.
Okay so this was the second showroom, i can't find picture of the old one, i liked that one better but there was a location change and this one is smaller, less packed. But still the important parts are there. These pictures are about 3 years old as well at this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please note the little knight with the megaphone in the corner on the monitor. I designed that one. Precious friend shaped little dude.
Tumblr media
This picture is Ezio's dagger from Assassin's Creed. It's not dirty just freshly out of the shipping box, swimming in grease to protect it from rusting. This one was a functional piece. The handle seems wide but it's not disproportionate, only my hands are small.
But we had like.. i dunno sabers of many kinds..and chinese swords with rigid blades to those weird but really fun floppy ones as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That green wall belonged to the old showroom my beloved 😭
Also there were pieces of armour and all. Not just full but chainmails and roman style, shields. Bows and Crossbows. Basically everything.
And like besides the selling and online customer service stuff, i did a lot of polishing, i probably enjoyed that the most. Of course the heavier damage or problems were handled by proper craftsmen but a simple polishing job? Gimme! -insert grubby hands- I'm gonna spend half a day on it but you gonna see yourself in it. Like this below. The left side is still unpolished, all foggy, but see the right? You can see the red shirt guy pretty good already. This helmet was so pretty after i was finished with it. I was so proud. 😭
Tumblr media
And then there were some modern stuff. With these i also did the smaller mechanical epairs like a jammed spring or a loose trigger and the like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This beretta was the first i took apart but i conquered it like a champ 😂 I was asking my boss if i could give it a try and he said as long as i don't break any additional parts go a head. Needless to say the second little guy landed in my lap without any question.
And there were so many other little highlights. I loved so many of the customers. I loved talking about their stuff or just listening to their stories. Uhh i miss it so much i can't even begin.

Okay so this (@badgermcghee) is my main blog and is where I put any miscellaneous reblogs. I don't post many original posts here other than tag games, and their respective tags are #badger badgers and #tag games.
@tarotmantic is my main sideblog and is for any fandom posts I do not have a sideblog for. These include but are not limited to The Magnus Archives, Fall Out Boy, Hannibal, and Dear Evan Hansen. I do post original posts there semi-frequently, which are tagged with #tarot.txt for short posts and #tarot.docx for long posts.
@gingerpigs is my petblr blog for my beloved guinea pigs. I started it when I had three ginger pigs hence the branding, but now only one of three is ginger. All posts there are original and are tagged with all the relevant petblr/cavyblr tags.
@tennispilled is my shiny new tennis-specific sideblog. Started just after AO24 I'm still in the honeymoon phase and am reblogging on it constantly. Contains the occasional original post that I do not have a tag for yet.

Doing something different this year for my Best of Tumblr post! You can click the image for a bigger view, the template came from FreePik. So let's go over the months!!
JANUARY: We're going to try avoiding any "theme" posts and so that exclude's Raiden's debut for the Tarot Card set, so we're looking at lovely Udaberri's Birthday! She had 2 Notes for her post. Raiden's was 12.
FEBRUARY: This one was also a birthday post, this one was for Druantiä's First Birthday! She had 5 Notes.
MARCH: Coming in strong with 29 Notes, we have our beloved Skyscales Grabbing Things They Shouldn't Be Able To.
APRIL: This one is a little odd because it was long photos I had to fit into a squat box... So both Oiba and Nilo get to show up with 16 Notes.
MAY: Raiden comes back, this time with his Flesh Golem that just...doesn't seem to know how to die...with 16 Notes.
JUNE: I've also tried to keep from doing any of the Pride posts and Art Party posts since those seem a bit like cheating... So we've got Ever Given's first appearance instead with 7 Notes!
JULY: I should have also realized that with Ever Given...the 148 Notes shouldn't have been a surprise with him Blocking The Finish Line.
AUGUST: Happily surprised that Laviii gets to partake in this with a Book of all things! The chair shots got 48 Notes.
SEPTEMBER: With 59 Notes, I'm glad you all agree with me in that Chak Make The Best Pets!
OCTOBER: I was a little sad none of my Halloween shots got this one, but the shoot that we had with Edgelady came in strong with 19 Notes.
NOVEMBER: But I guess it's okay...because Spirït got to show up after all with 10 Notes and his Ghost Boat.
DECEMBER: This one was a three way tie! But two of them were Dreamcember related—one the actual post and the other was extras of another. So Hiolair's Birthday became the winner with 6 Notes all around!
I look forward to this new year of creativity with you all!!! ♥

🦇 Persephone Made Me Do It Book Review 🦇
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
⚠️ Trigger Warnings: Abuse, Death, Rape, Sexual Assault, Toxic Relationships, Abduction/Kindapping, Grief, Trauma, Death
❝ The end of every survival story: I wasn't ready to become what I had to become. ❞
❓ #QOTD Who is your favorite goddess? OR fill in the blanks: I am ___, goddess of ___. ❓ ❝ I was a princess until I was old enough to be a bitch. ❞
🦇 In her latest poetry collection, Trista Mateer blends together mythology, tarot, poetry, and conversation to reveal a new side of a very old story. Alternating between the perspectives of a poet and a goddess, Persephone’s lore is explored, related to modern issues, and ultimately reclaimed. Her poetry is a reminder that every woman is a series of poetic corrections. Even with flowers in her hair, a goddess like Persephone can be out for blood. This is the third book in Mateer's Myth and Magick series.
💜 As always, Trista Mateer coveys the perfect balance of love and heartache. Her writing opens old wounds and spills shared experiences of motherhood, girlhood, survival, and self-affirmation. Each poem is emotional and raw, matched with striking illustrations (many of which are designed as modernized, collage-like tarot cards). Mateer pulls inspiration from familiar Greek myths, thereby infusing her personal experiences with magic and power. These pieces are a reminder that women--fictional figures in beloved Greek myths and the real women in our everyday lives--survive and endure so much, but never go down without a fight.
🦇 These poems are brutally honest and empowering, but they're not for everyone. Of the three in this series, I believe this one is the most difficult to swallow. Though some of the themes are universal, many readers might struggle to identify with some of the poetry's harsher themes. The collages, while attention-grabbing, are often hit-or-miss. While some enhance Mateer's poetry, others distract from the central themes.
🦇 Recommended to fans of Nikita Gill's Great Goddesses and Rupi Kaur's The Sun and Her Flowers.
✨ The Vibes ✨ 🌿 Feminist Verse 🌻 Mythology References 🌸 Part of a Series 🌷 Real and Raw 🌼 Art and Collages
🦇 Major thanks to the author @tristamateer and publisher @centavebooks for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley. 🥰 This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Episodes/Cases I want adapted in the TV show sooner or later. (This show better be getting multiple seasons.)
Including the ones I know for a fact or am 90% certain they will have adapted in season 1.
Fall 1 -> definitely gonna be adapted
Fall 2 -> definitely gonna be adapted
Fall 3 -> 100% gonna be adapted like I have seen proof
Fall 5 -> for the vibes and the Paris trip. Probably not adapted in season 1, though Verena is actually cast, so who knows. Maybe we get the Paris trip. Give me the food smuggle.
(Fall 7 -> simply for Benni and Leonhard. Listen I need Franzi’s Skaterboyfriends in the show.)
Fall 9 -> let Marie talk about her special interest in Celtic Myths and Tarot! Also this case is just very objectively fun and entertaining. Like grave robbers, yessss!
Fall 10 -> Rumours about a witch, cats, attempted bribing and eviction. It has it all! Franzi’s grandma is the absolute highlight. I adore her. (Wrote that before it was confirmed that we would get it. And I’m so excited that we do)
Fall 13 -> Horses. That’s it. That’s the whole reason I want this case adapted. The horse cases are just great.
Fall 14 -> Spooky vibes! Graveyards! A medium! A criminal pastor and being trapped in a mausoleum.
(Fall 15 -> solely for Verena. The weird sexualisation of teenage girls can leave…)
Fall 17 -> The animal smugglers. It’s just an interesting case. Plus the breaking into the Zoo! Love it! Would work great on screen.
Fall 18 -> kidnap plots are just very interesting. (minus the creepy dude flirting with Marie)
Fall 19 -> Cult and conspiracy theories episode, my beloved.
Fall 20 -> Sunken cities. We love sunken cities! (Also Kim reads “D3F und der verschollene Pilot“ in the audio drama version of this and I’m still not over that part. XD)
Fall 21 -> England, horses and horse races!
Fall 22 -> Berlin, theatre and bank robbery. What do you need more?
Fall 23 -> is definitely gonna be adapted.
Fall 26 -> This case has some interesting themes and important discussions, like poisoning and discussion of suicide.
Fall 27 -> Bats. That’s the whole reason. I love bats! Bats are great! Also light spook vibes mixed with winter vibes. Idk the combination is fun.
Fall 29 -> Amusement parks are cool. That’s the whole reason. Also Felipe. Oh Felipe my beloved. I need Felipe in the show!
Fall 30 -> Boarding school! Boarding school case! Also important discussions regarding alcohol consumption and peer pressure.
Fall 34 -> They are on vacation in Sylt together and that is always great. (I haven’t listened to that case in years so that’s all I can specifically think about right now. I for sure remember it being interesting.)
Fall 35 -> Hehe vacation again! In Venice this time. Some Grevenbroich family things. Tante Florentine is just a fun character.
Fall 40 -> someone’s house getting bugged. Cases involving someone being spied on are interesting and entertaining.
Fall 41 -> stolen expensive art! And also Felipe and Franzi being a cute couple. Them being on vacation again.
Fall 42 -> the villa district! Some crimes of the past. A tiny little master thief legacy situation.
Fall 43 -> Blake’s first appearance! We love some explicit disability representation. Blake is awesome. Blake is great. The case is also interesting.
Fall 44 -> I can’t really think of any specific reason. I just think it would be a calm little case to be adapted. (The case actually is fairly “intense” with stalking and black mail. At the end it’s just actually been something completely different.)
Fall 45 -> on the list because we are getting it hehe! I hope they will make it a bit spookier. Like give me a spookier resolution.
Fall 47 -> Being suspected to have committed a crime is always just great story potential. (It’s Franzi’s brother under suspicion but still falls under it in my opinion)
Fall 48 -> museums and Felipe. That’s all.
Fall 50 -> make this a season final special! I don’t know if I want Kommissar Peters to act the way he does in this case. But also it’s the pain potential that counts. Like please give me the girls being suspects.
Fall 56 -> Moor and suspenseful setting. Creepy vibes. Somehow cozy at the same time. Don’t ask me how. Also it has a bog mummy.
Fall 62 -> UFOs and lost Roman graves
Fall 63 -> important discussions about racism and bigotry (I’m sure there is things to critique about how they handled the messages.) Also Aveen and Khaleed! I adore them! They are actually part of the Jülich family post this case and you can’t change my mind.
Fall 64 -> I really really like the side characters in this case!
Fall 66 -> Ballet case. Listen I love ballet.
Fall 67 -> Geisterbahn
Fall 68 -> Girls in IT! Bente having Kim and Marie crush on her hehe (in my personal reading)
This list might be added onto in the future. These are just the main ones I listened to recently (<- meaning like in the last months) that I think would make great premises for adaptations or I am certain would have great episode potential.

Tarot Spreads for Beginners
Tumblr media
So you got into the wondrous and insightful world of Tarot. You have your deck, you know the meanings…but now what? Now comes the fun part: reading! As a cartomancer, I can assure you that studying the definition of each card and knowing them by heart is not enough if you don’t actually make use of the cards. What will guarantee that you’ll become more acquainted with this art is none other than practice. So far, you’ve learned to read the cards individually, isolated, but now it’s time to put those meanings in context. How do you do that? Keep reading to find out!
Before I start, I wanted to give a bit of a disclaimer. Memorizing the meanings of all 78 cards is not mandatory. It’s great that you want to educate yourself, but don’t forget that you have an ace up your sleeve: your intuition. And let me tell you a secret: it is much better if you follow your gut rather than your brain. If you want to know more about intuitive Tarot reading don’t miss our blog post!
Reading Tarot in context
There are two elements that will provide you with a frame in which you have to interpret the cards. On the one hand, there’s a question, and on the other, the cards. What does that mean? Let’s say the querent (the person asking a question) wants to know about their love life. They ask “what do I have to do in order to gain the confidence to ask my crush out on a date?”. Imagine you pull out three cards —The Strength, The Hierophant (inverted), and the ten of cups—, it’s important that you interpret them altogether and that you “adapt” the message to the question at hand. These three cards tell us that this person needs to be persistent and brave, not lose hope, and work hard on tearing down negative self-talk and emotional and spiritual conventions that are restrictive in order to get their beloved’s attention, which the ten of cups foresees.
Reading each card as if it were separated from the rest would be inaccurate, as the meanings tend to be slightly modified depending on the cards that are around, as would be not answering what the consultant asked. For instance, (same question as before) you tell the querent “I see that you need to be strong and persistent, good results are guaranteed; then you have to reassess your spirituality, reflect upon your convictions; and lastly, you’ll have a beautiful happy family.” Even though it’s somehow related to the question, it still doesn’t answer it per se. It’s as if somebody asked “what’s your favorite music genre?” and you replied “I listen to pop, jazz, and metal quite frequently.”
Tumblr media
What’s a tarot spread?
A spread is an arrangement of the cards that encompasses a set of questions regarding a theme and different positions in which the cards will be displayed. Some advanced readers may even take into account the number of the positions, as numerology can provide further information.
As for themes, you can find spreads for almost every single topic: finding love, finding a solution to a problem, communicating with spirits, finances, etc. Once you’re more acquainted with Tarot, you can come up with your own! They can be as simple or as complex as you want. The more extensive the layout is, the more information you’ll receive. In this post, you’ll find some easy, beginner-friendly ones.
One-card pull tarot
This is where beginners should start, ideally. You can pull one card from your deck every day to practice intuitive Tarot reading.
Tumblr media
Step 1: Take 5-10 minutes to ground and calm your mind. You can also pray to your spirit team to guide you through the reading.
Step 2: Shuffle the cards as many times as you want, you decide when to stop.
Step 3: When you’re ready, pick one card —or let it fly out of the deck, as you prefer— and place it facing up.
Step 4: Observe the card and take in its imagery. Focus and let your intuition guide you. What does the background look like? Is it sunny or rainy? What colors do you see? What do they symbolize or evoke? What’s the character in the picture? What energy do you get from the card? All these questions combined should give you enough information to interpret Tarot.
Tumblr media
Some cartomancers may use one-card pulls to answer yes/no questions. I don’t personally use Tarot for these particular questions, for the cards provide much more nuances than just black and white. It’s not as simple as having an upright card as “yes” and an inverted one as “no.” There are some cards that are neutral, such as Justice, or answer in a “yes, but…” or “no, but…” way. Alternatively, my yes/no question go-to divination tool is a pendulum. (Leave a comment if you want to learn about divination with pendulums!)
Three-card spreads
These are my favorite type of spreads, even as an advanced Tarot reader. They are simple and provide you with enough information to work with. Ultimately, short spreads are easier for beginners, as they don’t require a broad and complicated analysis.
Tumblr media
Pick a layout and shuffle the cards. Ask the question either out loud or in your mind (extra tip: including the name of the querent in the question can help you direct the energy toward them), and once you’re done shuffling, pull out the cards one by one and place them where the spread indicates. Now, I’ll give you some ideas for three-card spreads.
Card 1
Past, Situation, Your Goals, Your Finances, Embrace
Card 2
Present, Obstacles/Fear, Someone Else, Course of Action, Work through
Card 3
Future, Outcome, Relationship, Advice/Warning, Let go
Needless to say, you can modify these layouts and add or take out cards. For example, you can make the fear and obstacle two separate questions. That way you have more context to read from. The more cards a spread has, the more accurate and elaborated it will be.
Something I do occasionally in these types of spreads is do a numeric reduction. That is, I add each digit until I get a final number that is below or equal to 22. Then I grab a Major Arcana card that corresponds to the number I got (if it’s already in the spread, I take it as a sign that I should pay extra attention to it). This extra card brings more insight into the reading and works as additional advice.
Tumblr media
Interview your deck spread
This one’s for both beginner and advanced readers. If you ever wonder why cartomancers usually have more than one deck, it’s because they all have different personalities and limitations, like people. This six-card spread will help you bond with your new deck and understand how to work properly with it.
Card 1  Your essence
Card 2  Your strengths
Card 3 Your limitations
Card 4  What you’ll teach me
Card 5 How I can collaborate with you
Card 6 The outcome of our relationship
Extra tip
If you are indecisive about which spread to use, you can simply ask a question and pull as many cards as you feel comfortable reading. You may have certain rules when it comes to your practice. For example, in my case, if a card falls from the deck facing up, I take that as a sign that I should read it, but if more than three fall out, I don’t take them into account, regardless of their position —unless my gut tells me otherwise.
Ask —or suggest your client to ask— questions that need elaboration. Remember that messages from Tarot are like short stories. So, avoid questions like “will I…?”, “when is…?”, “did I…?” Instead, formulate questions along the lines of “what should I…?”, “what’s the best way to….?”, “how can I…?”, “what do I need to…in order to…?”, etc.
Now you know how to get started in your Tarot practice. As you gain experience, you’ll also gain confidence and will be able to read longer and more complex spreads. This is just the beginning in the wonderful world of divination. So buckle up and don’t forget that practice makes perfect!

Art analysis: 'Poe and Ranpo' chapter-opening art
Tumblr media
The upward eight of swords? The Black Cat? The Murders in the Rue Morgue?
*Spoilers ahead for the manga, ‘The Black Cat’ by Edgar Allan Poe, ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ by Edgar Allan Poe
Chapter 32 is the chapter where Poe challenges Ranpo and Yosano, but mostly Ranpo, to solve a mystery he has spent 6 years meticulously constructing, thinking that he finally would have his revenge on Ranpo. And, for what’s worth, I think it’s interesting to point out the potential references that are embedded in this chapter opening art.
# All my analyses are personal opinions and I do not mean to override any takes the reader might have. That being said...
The first reference is the upward eight of swords.
In the art, we can see a hand, or possibly just the hand of a body, reaching out from a coffin, and eight swords in an upright position jutting out of it. I haven’t really learned anything about tarot cards before but after reading up on it, I feel like it might have something significant to the card of the upward eight of swords. Please do correct me if I am wrong on any accord.
The upward eight of swords represents a situation where you feel trapped in a situation but you have no way out. The more that you think about it, the more that you feel trapped. But in actuality you are not bound by the situation itself but the thoughts by which you chain yourself. You are able to escape the situation if you want to.
Tumblr media
In the tarot card, the woman is fenced by the upright swords but isn’t necessarily imprisoned by them. She would know that she can escape if only she’d take the blindfold off.
So far in the manga, there has been two scenes where Ranpo admits that he does not have an ability and that his deduction skills are his own observative intelligence and methodology:
Chapter 32, which we are analysing right now
And, chapter 56, where he tells Mushitaro he will defeat him even though he does not have an ability, but since his comrades think he’s invincible (dazaiscans)
Ranpo kept telling Yosano all throughout the first part of the chapter that he needed his glasses so that they could solve the mystery of the novel they were trapped in and return to the real world. He's shown to have not wanted to question the guests or investigate his surroundings, but since Ranpo's "ability" has always been himself, he is subconsciously or unconsciously doing it anyways. He notices things when he's not even having to put in the effort to do so. He can point out his deduction process and justify the outcome as he always does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But he still said that he wasn't doing fine. I don't mean to mischaracterize Ranpo in any way, he is a very brilliant character with a childish, occasionally teasing personality but serious when the time calls for it. But in this chapter, his initial statement that says he couldn't use his ability because he did not have his glasses, did put him in a tight place for a hot minute. Now this is what would relate to the upward eight of swords. The card symbolizes a situation where you feel trapped in a situation but it is not the situation itself binding you, but your thoughts. You are able to escape if you want to. The lady in the card is able to escape if only she took her blindfold off. I wouldn’t necessarily say Ranpo is in denial of the fact that he does not have an ability, because, evidently, he very much is aware of said fact and acknowledges it himself.
The second reference is the black cat behind the window.
Tumblr media
While most ability users in BSD have their abilities named after a famous work of them or a reference to one of their works, Poe's ability name ‘Black Cat in the Rue Morgue’ has a combination of two of his works: 'The Black Cat' and ' The Murders in the Rue Morgue'. And the mystery novel that he introduced Ranpo to in Chapter 32 also seems to be a combination of the tales of irl Poe's two stories, 'The Black cat' and 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue', with, I'd say, only the exception of it being set in the future since the original novels of irl Poe did not have any futuristic elements in them. I’m not saying that the mystery novel is an exact replica and combination of the two irl novels, it’s just that the overall atmosphere of the novel seems to somewhat reflect certain elements of the irl novels.
The Black Cat is a story about a man who hanged his own cat from a tree and later killed his own wife in the heat of a moment. The protagonist of this novel enjoyed drinking to the extreme and it was in the moments when he was highly intoxicated that he committed acts such as gouging out the eye of his beloved cat, Pluto, and hitting his wife over the head with an axe, accidently killing her.
The Murders in the Rue Morgue is a story of how the intelligent mind of Auguste Dupin solved the muder mystery of two french ladies who were killed by an unknown murderer in their apartment at Rue Morgue street. Said unknown murderer later turned out to be an orangutan that a sailor captured from Borneo then brought to Paris, In the novel, several people known to have heard the murder were questioned individually about the unknown culprit, just like how the people in the mansion were questioned about the murderer in chapter 32, in the novel. It could be said that questioning witnesses is a common theme that can be found for any mystery story but it’s just an interesting similarity.
The thing about the mystery novel BSD Poe wrote was that-
a) There was a murderer whom the people did not know
b) The protagonist was trying to find out who the murderer is
c) The protagonist himself was the murderer
In the story of ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’,
a) There was a murderer whom the people did not know
b) The protagonist, or protagonists, since there were two of them, were trying to find out who the murderer is
Obviously BSD Poe’s mystery novel did not feature an orangutan that accidently happened to kill people but that is where the element of the story of ‘The Black Cat’ comes in, because the protagonist of ‘The Black Cat’ murdered both his cat and his wife in the name of intoxication, which leads us to
c) The protagonist himself is the murderer
Personally, I feel like ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ fits better than ‘The Black Cat’ for the references in BSD, since it features a protagonist, who was amazed by an individual who had a very observant mind. The protagonist of the novel had much admiration for Auguste Dupin’s thought process and how he could read something seemingly simple to deduce something deep out of it. Much like the admiration and respect that Poe has for Ranpo’s ability, the non-ability.
The third reference is the roses.
Tumblr media
Everyone knows that roses are typically associated with love, romance and passion, but they could also have different meanings depending on their color and their symbolisms in different cultures. Yellow roses in Japanese culture are said to mean jealousy, at least according to source. It might symbolize the jealousy that Poe has of Ranpo and his aspiration to beat Ranpo. But he is equally jealous of it as he is fascinated by it, which orange roses can symbolize: fascination and desire. They could also mean enthusiasm and passion, both of which Poe has for Ranpo’s company and ability. He admires Ranpo and his ability, in the way that one would admire their opponent in a friendly rivalry sort of relationship. He is constantly awed by it, and draws a lot of inspiration from Ranpo.
In conclusion, I think the fascination that Poe has of Ranpo and the fact that Ranpo acknowledges his and Poe’s encounter six years ago as ‘the only time I got pushed to my limits by another detective’(easygoingscans) is very compatible of them and I do believe that their rivalry and friendship is something that helps both of them grow and benefits both individuals. It is something beautiful.
Some more sources below for the meaning of roses if anyone wants to find out more!! Also thank you so much nika @nikadoesanart for beta-ing this analysis >//<

environmental lore ~ Dirthamen and Falon’Din
Part 1 - origins and the four armed statues Part 2 - their alliances Part 3 - the origins of humans
===
Part 2  - their alliances
There is a lot of environmental foreshadowing surrounding Dirthamen and Falon’Din in DAI, which is interesting considering they were extremely mysterious in previous games. Among these are many hints they worked closely with Fen’Harel, Mythal, and Andruil at some point in time.
The most solid evidence for this are the mosaics within the elven ruins in Trespasser, which is only safely accessible using Mythal’s passphrase.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The mosaics are clearly old, but you can definitely see they represent Dirthamen, Mythal, Fen’Harel, and Falon’Din in that order.
Tumblr media
A double raven standard is also clearly seen within the weaponry used by the freed slaves, indicating Dirthamen actually helped the rebels either in secret or even as a leader in battle.
Tumblr media
Two archer statues surrounding the eluvian leading out of the ruins also suggest Andruil was similarly involved in their alliance.
Evidence for this alliance is further strengthened through Falon’Din and Andruil’s shared symbolism of the owl, which is also seen as a terrible omen of loss by the Dalish.
Andruil would send her messenger, the owl, to show the People the way, and they would follow him to where the land was blessed.
Always keep an eye out for the noble owl. You never know: Andruil might have a message for you.
Tumblr media
Falon'Din sought someone to be his messenger and companion. The wind was swift, but Falon'Din refused to chain it. The People were loyal, but could not live where Falon'Din walked. Then the owl came to him and said, "I am not cowed by darkness. Let me serve you who also has no fear of night." Falon'Din accepted gladly, and took the owl as his servant, who thereafter helped Falon'Din guide the People through the passage of the Veil.
I theorise the symbol of the owl was in fact Falon’Din himself, flying between the Void and the real world to pass Mythal’s verdicts on to Andruil so she could deliver judgements in the form of her hunts.
Falon’Din’s mastery of the dark and shapeless worlds and airless skies also fits in line with Andruil’s hunts in the Void, which is otherwise known as the place of nothing. I believe Andruil and Falon’Din’s journeys both inevitably led to the Void, simply because that was the only place judged culprits could hide from Mythal’s justice.
Tumblr media
This also brings to mind the puzzle we find at the Darvaarad in Trespasser.
“One sees the hunter, one flees from it, one hunts it in turn, one outwits them all.”
Or in other words...
“The owl(Falon’Din) sees the hunter(Andruil), the halla (Ghilan’nain) flees from it, the dragon(Mythal) hunts it in turn, the wolf (Fen’Harel) outwits them all.”
Personally, I think the riddle strongly hints at a fallout between Andruil and Ghilan’nain, either due to conflicts of interest in their duty to Mythal, or on a more personal level as Ghilan’nain was once considered “beloved” by Andruil.
My current theory is that Ghilan’nain hid in the Void after the event with the Sinner in an attempt to raise a coup against Mythal. Mythal sought Falon’Din and Andruil to bring her to justice, and so they hunted her while Dirthamen tried in vain to stall them/protect her, either out of love for her or because she held a secret he didn’t want getting out (perhaps their relationship was the secret, and Ghilan’nain was cheating on Andruil with Dirthamen).
This results in Dirthamen getting neutralised by Fen’Harel to resolve the situation which was spiralling out of control, but this is all a distraction by Ghilan’nain to lead Mythal’s allies away from her so she can be cornered and “killed”. We don’t yet know the movements of June, Sylaise, and Elgar’nan, so it’s unknown if they also had something to do with orchestrating Mythal’s death.
Whatever the case may be, I think it’s likely Dirthamen was backstabbed by Fen’Harel because Dirthamen’s pose in the fade mimics Solas’ unfinished fresco- both he and Mythal feature a sword sticking out from their back. However I don’t think Solas acted out of malice in both cases, but rather out of regret and perceived necessity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Consequently, my current theory is that the owl statue in DAI solely represents Falon’Din and Andruil is represented by the archer statues.
The owl statues are also always seen carrying a circular object, of which I believe to be an eluvian/elven artifact to transport or imprison criminals hunted down by Andruil.
Tumblr media
Owl statues can also be found at Skyhold, which is interesting in itself because it is strongly hinted at that Skyhold is where Solas created the veil.
The owl can be seen in the Great Hall, as well as in your own quarters which I think is kinda creepy considering the underlying symbolism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s even more interesting to me is the painting above these owls. It clearly shows the Inquisition logo, but the art style is similar to many other artworks we find around Ferelden, meaning it is likely older than the Inquisition itself, and possibly even painted by the Avvar. The mountain in the artwork seems to be a reference to Belenas, a mountain that may have been the original location of Arlathan before it became the Black City.
Tumblr media
The art is similar in style to the artwork in the stables mysteriously depicting Dirthamen and Ghilan’nain.
Another notable example of this art style can be found on the mayor of Crestwood’s house.
Tumblr media
The symbolism of this artwork is peculiar, because it shows lightness and darkness divided, encircled, and guarded by a raven and a wolf- animal symbols representing Dirthamen and Fen’Harel respectively. The circle comprises of twelve equal divisions with a weeping sun in the centre. Solas’ tarot cards also features twelve stars, three of which are disintegrated. A very peculiar coincidence...
Tumblr media
The owl statues also feature prominently at Suledin Keep, which I think was once Falon’Din’s stronghold based on the statues and symbolism found there.
Tumblr media
The red lyrium mist emanating from the entrance is particularly foreboding, especially since Falon’Din is the master of darkness and shadow- themes also associated with the Void and the blight.
The People swore their lives to Falon'Din Who mastered the dark that lies. Whose shadows hunger Whose faithful sing Whose wings of death surround him Thick as night. Lethanavir, master-scryer, be our guide, Through shapeless worlds and airless skies.
──Song to Falon'Din, found in the Temple of Mythal, author unknown
Tumblr media
In fact in most areas where the owl statue is seen, death is also often associated with it. The best example of this can be seen at the Knight’s Tomb, where they flank a beheaded Mythal statue with a skull in place of it’s regular head.
Tumblr media
While it’s clear the owl is strongly linked to Falon’Din, Dirthamen is a lot more mysterious. Dirthamen’s most beloved animal is the bear, however he doesn’t seem to have any clear statue depicting himself in the main game. In fact, at the Temple of Mythal his mosaic is flanked by two owl statues.
If you do the rituals, Falon’Din’s mosaic can also be seen next to Fen’Harel and Mythal next to the owl puzzle, however no depiction of Dirthamen can be found.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Similarly at Dirthamen’s lost temple, no mosaic or depiction of Dirthamen can be seen, however there are green mosaics of Falon’Din and one red mosaic of Ghilan’nain. And most interestingly of all, the locked inner sanctum shows two gilded statues of Fen’Harel, which is not something you would expect at a temple dedicated to Dirthamen.
Tumblr media
This is further evidence to me Dirthamen and Fen’Harel were once close allies, and this is compounded by the fact the imprisoned high keeper in the temple awakens from an elven artifact. This is the same artifact Solas uses to measure the veil, and also an item he constantly describes as an “artifact of his people”.
Tumblr media
But to sum it all up, I think the Vir Dirthara in Trespasser best displays these web of alliances because it is also one of the few places Dirthamen is represented in the form of a raven.
Tumblr media
Mythal was the adjudicator in the center, and Fen’Harel was her wingman ensuring her day to day ran smoothly. Falon’Din was the messenger who travelled between worlds, passing Mythal’s judgements to Andruil who in turn hunted judged culprits. Dirthamen represents the ravens at the edge of the scene, monitoring events in the background and keeping tabs on everyone in the shadows, much like Leliana’s role as spymaster.
Tumblr media
It is interesting to me that Dirthamen is portrayed as a raven instead of a bear though, because his ravens are described in current known lore as his bound minions, not as true allies.
Nevertheless, raven statues can be found in the Fade in the main game, as well as seemingly random locations such as Redcliffe.
Tumblr media
Raven statues can also be seen in the Crossroads, right before these magical red eggs that trigger the visibility of new pathways to different floating islands.
Considering the fact Dirthamen/Falon’Din are considered twins that walked the shifting paths beyond the veil, I think this is further evidence these raven statues do in fact represent Dirthamen.
