FIRST, CAN I JUST SAY that at the moment that I am writing this post, we are still trending at #5 and we’ve been in the 4-7 range for at least the past, like, IDK, 18-20 hours maybe?! I LOVE THIS FANDOM AND HOW WE LOSE OUR SHIT AT THE SMALLEST THINGS

Okay, so let me go through this thing and comment on the parts, and then give some general thoughts below:

LOVE that this is a promo entirely about the LGBTQIA+ characters and characters of color. Not exactly surprised that they still tried to put as much Rob Lowe in it as possible (that’s Fox/the writers’ M.O. it seems - to squeeze Rob/Owen in whether he fits or not). Some of his comments were a little awkward, I thought (referring to Paul’s trans storyline as “stuff” makes me go 😬), but whatever. He’s not the point of all of this, so that’s the last I’m going to talk about him.

TOMMY VEGA. I AM READY TO STAN. I love Gina Torres, I already love how much heart and soul she is giving just in these quick peeks, I cannot wait to see her in action!

Also let me use this moment to say that while it’s obvious I’m not getting my Grace + Carlos friendship (that’s fine if it stays in fandom, I’ll live), I’m SO GLAD that her and Tommy are gonna be friends! One promo mentioned that Judd has known Tommy before, so it would not surprise me if they’ve been friends for awhile. LOVE THAT.

SPECULATION: This gives me a good time to just throw out a theory that I’ve been thinking about... We know Owen and Gwen are hosting Tommy at their place for a backyard dinner. I assume her husband may be there as well, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Judd and Grace are there too.

I ALSO would not be surprised if this is when one of the nights at Carlos’s place happens, like a parallel of the two dinner parties. That at least keeps every main character involved in both locations. We shall see though.

So this gathering at the firehouse seems like it’s going to be a pretty big scene, probably for episode 1. I think everyone’s gathered so that Owen can announce he’s in remission (we’ll hear him tell TK first, which is the hug that they share earlier in the trailer, I think).

But this gathering also includes a Tommy/Grace moment, a Tarlos moment, the others doing other things kind of moments. It’ll serve the same purpose as a lot of the season 1 bar scenes, and I’m so glad they’ve moved those to the firehouse. I want that place to really start feeling like a home this year.

(I want all of the locations to feel a little more grounded and special, if I’m being honest. Like, I’m SO GLAD that Carlos’s place is going to be a key location this season.)

There are now two instances of Carlos being next to Gwen (standing next to her while Owen makes an announcement and now sitting next to her at the table), so we better get some dialogue between them or I WILL BE SO UPSET. I WANT GWEN TO STAN CARLOS AS MUCH AS I DO.

LOL that was a lot but so was this promo.

Now, some somewhat sobering thoughts...

We all know season 1 had a real diversity and inclusion problem, we’ve seen the numbers. We also know that during the promotion for season 1, we ALSO got a diversity promo focusing on the LGBTQIA+ characters and the characters of color. I love that Fox wants to highlight the incredibly talented actors and characters that they have, but all of it means nothing if they are still tokens on the show.

I have full faith that season 2 will be better, that some of the justified anger and frustration made it back to the writers and they internalized it and then make some real changes. However, because we did get a diversity promo last year, I have to remain a little cautious. This promo doesn’t really mean anything and if, somehow, season 2 goes the way season 1 did, it will be another instance of Fox using the characters of color to draw people in without actually giving them screentime and development. Which is a HUGE PROBLEM. So... I’m very excited and very hopeful, but also slightly wary.

Similarly, I’ve seen people say that they’re worried that, while there is so much Tarlos in this promo, this might be all the Tarlos we get this season. I don’t share the same concern, but like the diversity issue, I understand where that comes from. There was a lot of Tarlos in season 1′s promos and, as we now know, they got screentime in episodes 1-3 and then virtually nothing until episode 10.

I kind of lost track of the filming schedule, but I think before they went on the holiday/extended hiatus, they filmed the first 5-6 episodes? Maybe? And we know that we’re getting 14 total this season, which means it’s possible that they haven’t even filmed half of them.

I think the footage that we got in this promo is from, like, 3 or 4 episodes max. Definitely episodes 1 and 2, maybe 4, possibly 5. The crossover is episode 3 and I am still expecting to barely see Carlos in it - I just think it’s going to be very fire heavy one, especially with the members of the 118 coming in to steal screentime. He could be in one scene, maybe? Idk, I’m just not expecting a lot from that episode.

And sure, we could get a lot of Tarlos at the beginning and then nothing for a whole string of episodes, but that also just doesn’t seem possible with the way they’ve restructured the relationship dynamics. Like, it really does seem like Carlos is going to be a part of the family this year, so I think it will be easier to include him and harder to delete him entirely. (Please let him at least appear in every single episode, I don’t want to be so fucking angry like last year.)

Also, if all of these scenes stay in the episodes, we are getting AT LEAST 4 Tarlos conversations - the firehouse, the wrestling match, the farmer’s market, the flirting by the truck - and other scenes of them being in the same space as part of a group. I’m sure there will be even more that we’re just not seeing. I’m very optimistic for this season and for the Tarlos content, and I really don’t think we’ll see the front-loaded imbalance that we saw last season. I think when they get back to filming the later episodes, there will be a good amount of Tarlos content in those, too!

I will say, though, that I am worried we’ve just seen the only kiss that they’ll share in the first 5 or so episodes. I’m just so used to network TV placing a limit on gay kisses, and Idk how much that has really changed in recent years. I truly love this kiss, and I hope there are more, but I would not be surprised if we end the season having only gotten like 2-3. (PLEASE LET ME BE WRONG.)

ranting

Carlos has always found TK’s ability to rant quite enticing. He’s endured him filibustering about tea for whole seven minutes – he timed it – but right now Carlos is about to lose it. Forty-eight minutes of TK spluttering about how his parents fight and make up all the while ignoring his presence in the house is too much, even for someone as patient as Carlos Reyes.

He tries to interrupt TK several times to no avail; TK simply listens to whatever nonsense Carlos is saying, and then dives right back into his rant. It’s going to drive Carlos crazy – or at least give him a huge headache. So he does the only thing he can think of.

He’s quick and stealthy in leaning in and dropping a light kiss on TK’s lips. It’s so sudden that it shuts TK up for the best part of ten seconds. He frowns, staring up at Carlos in confusion, before opening his mouth to keep talking.

Carlos kisses him again, repeatedly, until he feels TK isn’t going to speak again, and then he leans back.

This time, he thinks TK might have noticed that he’s up to something with all the kisses, because the frown on his face deepens.

“Carlos,” he gingerly begins. “Is this your way to tell me I’m talking too much?”

The softness in that voice cuts through Carlos, making him feel horrible. “I didn’t mean to–” he tries to explain.

“I’m sorry I was bothering you,” TK mutters. He curls his hands on his lap, looking down at them as they fold and unfold.

“You’re not bothering me,” Carlos is quick to cut him off.

TK shakes his head. “I’m used to it. I talk a lot, I’m sorry.”

“Hey, hey, don’t go there,” Carlos tells him. He’s beginning to understand his mistake, and he wants nothing more than to fix it. “I just think you’re giving your parents too much power over how you feel. Not that–I mean, they’re your parents,” he stammers when TK gives him a pointed look that screams look who’s talking, Mr. This-Is-My-Friend-From-Work. “What I mean is, why focus on that when you could easily get out of that situation?”

TK remains silent for a second. “What do you mean?”

“Move in with me,” Carlos blurts out, suddenly nervous. “Just, let them have all that space and go at it, whether it is fighting or, you know, uh–”

“Are you for real now?”

Carlos stares into green eyes, searching for a sign that he’s overstepped. When he finds none, he breathes out. “Yeah. Move in with me,” he repeats, voice steadier this time.

TK’s hand stop fidgeting on his lap and move to cup Carlos’ face. “I love you so much, Carlos Reyes.”

“And I love you so, so much, TK Strand.”

“Good, good, not using my full name will get you places.”

“Like, for example, the bedroom?”

"For example."

TK laughs heartily as he stands up and tugs at Carlos to follow him upstairs.

in a funk

They have been fighting since the moment they arrived at the park. Carlos doesn’t know when exactly their date night went awry, but it’s gone down the drain so quickly it’s left him dizzy.

And now they are just at each other’s throats.

It all began with TK coming home in a funky mood, and it’s evolving into something bigger as his boyfriend keeps pointing out everything that’s wrong around them.

“Would you just stop complaining, TK? We came here to have a good time,” he tries to reason with his boyfriend.

“You dragged me here!” TK exclaims, hands in the air.

“If that’s the only reason you came here, just go home,” Carlos finally snaps, stopping dead in his tracks. “Just go home, TK, but stop being a jerk.”

That makes TK shut up quicker than anything else. Carlos sighs.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers. “I shouldn’t have–“

“No,” TK interrupts him. “It’s me who should be sorry.”

“Are you going to tell me what’s got you in such a mood?”

TK shrugs before he mutters, “Dad’s been weird once again. I think something’s up with mom.”

Carlos sighs again. He reaches out until his arm is over TK’s shoulders, pulling him into a tight embrace. He knows things have been strange at the Strand household, and he knows TK’s been silently suffering from it.

“I should have noticed,” he insists. “We’ll go back home, watch a movie, order some pizza.”

“No, no.” TK shakes his head. “I want to be here, with you. Let’s have some fun.”

Carlos hugs him tightly. “You’re not going to enjoy it, and you know that. We’ll come another time.”

“Promise?”

There’s a light in TK’s eyes that both warms and freezes Carlos’ soul – he looks so lost and eager all at once.

“Promise.”

In the rare occasion that TK wakes up before Carlos, he loves to watch his boyfriend sleep. There’s peace in his features, all traces of stress vanished from his forehead — TK feels calm washing over him whenever he gets to admire the gorgeousness in front of him.

TK could stare at Carlos’ sleeping form for the rest of his life.

His left hand reaches out on its own volition and caresses Carlos’ skin, warm underneath the touch. TK soon withdraws his fingers, too aware that Carlos doesn’t like to be touched while he’s asleep — something to do with an ex-boyfriend, Carlos told him once, TK hasn’t forgotten — and decides to surprise Carlos with breakfast in bed.

He doesn’t get far, though.

Just when he’s turning around to climb off the bed, a hand circles around his wrist and tugs lazily at him. He turns around in time to see Carlos’ eyes, heavy with slumber, open just a fraction. “Morning,” Carlos slurs sleepily.

TK can’t help the smile that blooms in his face. “Morning, sleepyhead.” He leans in and drops a kiss on the corner of Carlos’ mouth, chuckling lowly when Carlos tries to chase his lips and fails to kiss him back, still to incoherent with sleep. “What about I go make breakfast while you try not to fall asleep again, babe?”

Carlos whines when he tries to stand up from the bed, pulling him in. “No,” he manages to say, eyes once again closed. TK ruffles his curls and drops a kiss on top of his head. Carlos tries to retaliate by turning in TK’s arms to kiss him but he fails in his aim — instead of kissing TK’s cheek he ends up colliding against TK’s chest. “Ooof.”

“Guess someone’s still asleep,” TK muses. He doesn’t move, though. Carlos has got a tight rip on him. “We should get up and do stuff, Carlos.”

“Or,” Carlos replies, face still buried in TK’s chest, sounding a bit more awake by the second. “You could get back into bed with me.”

“And why would I do that?” TK jokes, already sliding back underneath the covers. Carlos’ arm slides immediately over his waist.

“Because I’m here,” Carlos replies coyly. TK laughs.

“Well, there’s no better place I’d like to be, then,” he says, pulling the duvet over them and diving in for a proper good morning kiss. And, hopefully, much, much more.

The containers are precariously balanced on top of the Camaro hood while he closes the door with his hip since his hands are full right now. There are boxes in bags dangling from his fingers, heavy with the weight of different kinds of bread and a thermos that keeps his mom’s soup warm.

Carlos manages to lock the car without dropping any bag or tipping any container off the edge of the hood. He stares down at his hands with a frown. He doesn’t know how he’s going to take everything inside – he’s made three or four trips from his condo to his Camaro to bring everything into the car, but he can’t really do that now again. He fears some of the containers might fall to the ground, and he doesn’t want to grab everything and stumble into the station. He’s pretty sure he won’t be able to take two steps without tripping over his own feet.

“Yo, Reyes, need a hand?” Judd calls from inside the station. When Carlos turns, he sees Judd followed by Mateo and Paul, beaming down at him. “Looks like you went a little overboard.”

“I might have?” he says bashfully, feeling his cheeks grow warm as Judd laughs heartily. “I mean, I just–”

“It’s okay, brother,” Paul interrupts Judd when he’s about to say something else. “TK’s out, medical call, so we need to work fast. And we thank you,” he continues pointedly. “It’s not every day that we’re going to be fed by a great chef.”

“Not a chef,” Carlos mumbles. “Just like cooking.”

Mateo and Judd take some of the containers while Paul picks the bags from Carlos’ left hand. He smiles at his friends – his newfound family – as they amble into the station and veer toward the kitchen, where they find Marjan already feeding Buttercup. They make quick work of displaying the food, cutting it short when the ambulance enters the building, Nancy jumping out shaking her head.

“You need to go back to driving classes, cowboy,” she calls out.

Captain Vega joins the chorus of laughs as TK slides off the driver’s seat and closes the door forcefully. Carlos freezes – he knows TK hasn’t seen him yet, and he doesn’t want him to, not yet anyway.

“I’m sorry, okay?” TK apologizes, but there’s a tinge of sadness in his voice. “I’m just distracted today. I don’t know why.”

“I may have an idea,” Carlos speaks up. TK stops mid-movement, finally realizing what’s going on. “I’m sorry you have to work a twenty-four-hour shift on our first-year anniversary, but I thought we could still celebrate.”

“Carlos!” TK squeals, his face morphing from devastation to elatedness. “You’re here! And you brought lunch!”

Carlos chuckles and welcomes TK into his arms when he reaches around the kitchen counter, mindless of their audience when TK chases his lips to kiss him in greeting. Everything dissolves around them as they part and look into each other’s eyes, lost in their world at once.
