"Blinks and Blares" (眨眼和刺耳声)

Shel Silverstein led one of the most interesting lives that has been lived in the last century. A college dropout, artist, and writer, one might have expected to find him waiting tables or washing toilets. Instead, he was a soldier, a cartoonist and columnist for playboy, and a playwright before becoming a beloved children’s book author. He didn’t get there using alliteration… but agreeably for almost anyone, he used it after. One poem in particular is the anthem of our age: Standing is Stupid. In this poem, he argues that physical activity is useless and that instead we should spend our time lying down (truly he was ahead of his time). After taking his advice, lying and thinking for what felt like a lifetime, the little mysteries have become elucidated: it’s all in the lights. Those bright lights, those flashing lights—those that make us turn our heads and hold position with mouths hanging open. They’re just…so Shanghai, and their movement almost makes me forget where we are.

Earlier this week I had a refreshing conversation with a member of a peer group that I belong to. Since I just started with this organization at the beginning of the year, this was my first one on one connection. One word to describe her - inspiring. She was filled with energy, grit, perseverance, and a never-give up mindset. We shared our stories and I felt instantly connected to her considering our journeys, and now mindfulness, were very similar. On the wall above my desk, I have this quote by Theodore Roosevelt. Occasionally, I will read it, with no real routine or reason. This morning I went through it; the first time in several weeks and reminded me of my conversation earlier this week. It also brought up thoughts of another conversation I've been having with a dear friend about a big, huge I would say, decision that will need to be made by them. Each decision we make, we also must make sacrifices. There are the comfortable decisions, and those that scare the hell out of us! When it comes down to it, when we are left standing in that arena, don't we want to be the one that has "stumbled, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who has strived valiantly?" Or, do we want to come out on the end, beautifully and perfectly preserved?

OMGYESTHIS!!! I did some writing the other day about what love/hate relationships I have with my self-story, and I landed on my stage fright as this huge internal conflict. On the one hand, I’ve been terrified to get up and sing on my own since elementary school. Fine. But there’s massive conflict there because I still WANT to get up and do it, and now it’s this huge fight. Most of the time, the fear wins (though credit to myself for the courage it took to make last Sunday’s Tiktok video!). I realized as I was writing about this that listening to the fear has protected me from trying. Not always—there have been exceptions over the years, usually accompanied by a panic attack, but I’ve managed to do it—but for the most part, when your body freezes up just at the thought, you’re not going to get past the thought. That means no risk of rejection...but it also means no risk of acceptance. No risk of success. No risk of GROWTH. That was a hell of a thing to realize, for sure—and here it is, so accurately depicted in this image (because odds are good your failures will outnumber your successes, especially at the beginning). I hope you’ll take a minute and think about where your fears are protecting you from the risks of rejection, success, and growth. Let’s all decide we’re worth the chance.
