READ YOUR MIND - PROLOGUE: Cafe Ghosting

“So, I’m kind of thinking of growing out my hair then bleaching it blonde when I’m a little older.” Hiyyih hummed, staring at a few strands of her brown hair in her hands.

“Hm, like golden?” Y/N replied, setting down a can of sprite from her lips and squinting her eyes at the younger female—visualizing what she would look like with different hairstyles.

“I’m thinking platinum?” Hiyyih questioned, before both girls’ heads turned to the older Huening who sat next to them gulping down a bottle of grape soda.

“I don’t even want to think about it.” Kai mumbled as he set down his bottle. “I will never bleach my hair. I’d look bad.”

“Oh, you will one day. It would look pretty on you.” Y/N cooed, pinching his cheeks which he batted away with a chuckle.

This was her daily routine ever since the Huenings moved to their village, at the vacant apartment right next to hers. With her trusty shy friend Kai, who she discovered was the same age as she was, and his younger sister Hiyyih—sometimes with their older sister Lea—she was all set in her little freshman world. Everyday consisted of bets, laughter and fun—she couldn’t ask for anything better.

Y/N giggled as both Hiyyih and Kai started a little argument about how they don’t look too identical (the girl believed she can buy Kai a wig to pretend he was Hiyyih in class) when the boy groaned and threw his head back.

“It’s so hot.” The boy whined. “The fan isn’t doing anything anymore.”

“Open a window.” Hiyyih shrugged, glancing back at the closed window.

The boy promptly stood up, truding over the couch and opening a window before turning to their friend with a smile.

“Remember when you lost a bet to me?”

“I did?” Y/N raised an eyebrow as the boy chuckled maniacally.

“Yeah, you bet me yesterday that I wouldn’t be able to let Soobin-hyung get me off the hook for junior basketball practice to go get shakes with you.” He mumbled proudly, making the girl grumble.

Soobin was training the new members basketball team as he was lined up to become the next basketball co-captain. He has a fond preference for Hueningkai—which gives him special privileges to slack off every once in a while. Of course, Y/N bet that he wouldn’t be able to slack off so near regionals. She was wrong.

“What do you want?” Y/N mumbled, making Hiyyih giggle and raise her hands.

“A milkshake!”

“Actually, can you go get me coffee from that nearby café?” Kai grinned. “I’m trying something new.”

“You seem to forget that I’m have no money.” Y/N whined, which made the boy shrug.

“A deal is a deal.”

And so, she was off, trudging into the nearby café. Ghosting, it was called. Newly established and had that addicting caffeine smell. Maybe she could try something new too.

As she stood a few feet away from the register, perusing over what kind of coffee options she could buy for both her and Kai (who knew there were so many variations of coffee?), her eyes fell on a boy sitting at a nearby table with red-rimmed glassy eyes and a poker face. He wasn’t really drinking anything, though there was an empty glass at the seat in front of him telling her someone sat there before.

Pursing her lips, Y/N checked her wallet and pulled out last week’s allowance, before stepping up to the register and chatting with the barista. The barista shared that the boy had been sitting there alone for about an hour now. A nasty break-up, she said. So, Y/N ordered Hiyyih’s milkshake and three caramel makyatoes as the barista recommended. She gathered all drinks in a plastic bag, holding one separately as she walked over and placed it in front of the emotionless boy.

“I heard it was a break up.” Y/N muttered softly, tilting her head. “It’ll be okay.”

“Have you had one?” The boy replied, making the girl purse her lips in thought.

“Well… no… I’ve never had a boyfriend.” Y/N crossed her arms. “Wait, no, maybe I had one in kindergarten but I kind of kicked him when he kissed me in recess.”

There was no resonating laughter at that joke, making the girl pout.

“I know it hurts, because you’re crying, but really—”

“She said I’m a loser nerd.” The boy frowned, rubbing his eyes. “I don’t take care of myself and I’m boring—that I keep talking about weird stuff. That I don’t look handsome.”

“That’s mean.” Y/N raised her eyebrows, taking a seat in front of the boy. “She shouldn’t have.”

“She has another boyfriend now, the captain of the basketball team. He’s a senior.”

“Oh, Jeongmin?” Y/N curled her lips in disgust. “He sucks. He makes fun of my friend just because he’s taller than him.”

The boy didn’t reply.

“Well, forget about her and Jeongmin.” Y/N waved him off. “Look at this as a clean slate. So what if you’re a nerd, I don’t think you’re a loser or boring! And who is she to tell you you’re not handsome?”

“I have stick arms.”

“Then get some muscle, learn a sport. It’s achievable.” Y/N ranted. “Being smart isn’t. That’s an advantage over Jeongmin that you have. Plus, you’re attractive, believe me.”

The boy’s lips twitched slightly.

“Get some friends, a girlfriend who isn’t superficial. Be the better version of who you are now. Show her the best you that you can be and what she gave up for that poopface.” Y/N listed down on her hands. “Oh, and there’s always someone that will support you!”

“Who?”

“Me, and that’s a promise.” Y/N grinned, holding out her pinky. “I never break my promises.”

“Okay.” The boy chuckled softly, hesitating slightly before wrapping his pinky around hers. “Fine, but I think I’ll back off on romance now. This sucks.”

“Baby steps.” Y/N smiled. “What’s your name? I don’t think I’ve seen you around.”

“Oh, my name is Taehyun. I—”

Ring. Ring.

Y/N smiled sheepishly, picking up her phone with a grumble.

“What do you want?”

“What’s taking so long? Where’s my cold coffee?”

“Shut up, I’m dealing with a crisis. It’s here in tact—” Y/N rolled her eyes, holding up the plastic bag holding their coffee cups and gasped at the almost melted ice. “Oh no, it’s melting. I’m coming back now!”

Taehyun tilted his head in confusion as the girl shoved her phone back in her pocket and grinned at the boy.

“You’ll get through it, believe me.” Y/N smiled, zooming away before the boy could even process what happened.

The boy only sighed, turning over to the glass windows and watching her turn a corner and disappear into an alleyway. His eyes fell onto his reflection on the windows.

Show her the best you that you can be and what she gave up for that with that poopface.

Then, his eyes fell on the boxing gym located in front of the café.

All that happened 6 years ago. They’re in college now.

Taehyun became taller, a little bulkier. The loser nerd became the attractive, aloof genius of the school.

Kai grew up and out of his shell, mixed in with the popular crowd (and bleached his hair). He fell out of his friendship with Y/N—never talking to her again once he got too busy with his own activities. He found his own group of friends—and a new best friend in Taehyun.

Y/N remained as she was. A homebody, sticking close to Hiyyih and her newfound friends while silently supporting that crying boy she saw in the café.

Even if he did steal her best friend.

Even if he didn’t seem to remember her, or what she said, or even glance at her.

She never breaks her promises, after all.

52. hiyyih tells all

[ synopsis ] choi beomgyu has spent his entire senior year slacking off and causing mischief. but, due to his inattentiveness, his slacking off went too far and if he doesn't improve the grade in his literature class he'll guarantee himself a seat in summer school. yn has big dreams to be on stage and star on broadway. however, she needs to impress recruiters with one last production as the lead in order to earn herself a spot in a new york based school. when beomgyu's literature teacher makes him join their drama club for extra credit, their futures quickly become intertwined and dependent on each other.

“Are they always like this?” Hanni whispered to Bahiyyih, looking at the four boys across from them laughing and twiddling with their phones.

“Twitter is as integral to their relationship as drama club,” Hiyyih sighed loudly, hoping it would get the boys’ attention.

Taehyun was the first to look up from his phone, seeing Hiyyih and Hanni staring at them with full judgment. He slapped Kai’s chest with the back of his hand, trying to get the others to put their phones down. They quickly shut their phones off, apologizing before each grabbing one of the six microphones on the table in front of them.

“Who’s gonna go first?” Hiyyih asked, hugging the song tablet to her chest.

Soobin slapped Beomgyu’s back, “I think Gyu should go first. He’s had a rough day.”

“No, thanks,” Beomgyu replied. He tugged on the protective mic cover, thoughts wandering to all the vocal rehearsals he had with YN.

“C’mon Beomgyu,” Hiyyih scoots closer to him, gently holding the song tablet in his lap. “Singing is a good way to let it all out.”

Beomgyu hesitated for a moment. He stared at the blue screen, eyes wandering over all the categories and karaoke modes. He took the tablet and began typing in a song in the search bar. He hit play once he found it, silently situating himself waiting for the song to begin playing through the speakers.

The song title is displayed on the screen, making the rest of the boys look at each other.

“That’s…” Taehyun started, but quickly caught his tongue. It wasn’t the best choice given the circumstances, but it’s what Beomgyu wanted to do. His choice just further proved how devastated he felt over the events that unfolded the day before.

Beomgyu’s voice began to echo through the speakers. Everyone quietly listened to the way his voice croaked, emulating a type of misery that they didn’t even know was possible. Hiyyih and Hanni looked at each other, both knowing whatever was bothering Beomgyu had to be because of them.

“Someone’s pretty dedicated to the production,” Hanni smiled sheepishly, trying to lighten the mood after Beomgyu finished singing.

“You could say that,” Beomgyu sighed, handing the tablet back to Hiyyih.

“Speaking of dedication to the production, have you guys noticed Soojung and Yeonjun have been.. talking? Like they seem close, haven’t you noticed? They’ve never been this close when they starred in other productions together,” Taehyun asked, readying his mic for his turn.

Hiyyih looked up from the tablet. Beomgyu had tears brimming in his eyes. The burden of knowing was getting harder to bear. Taehyun was starting to notice, it was a matter of time before they all found out on their own. She felt her chest tighten. She couldn’t take it anymore.

“Beomgyu, I’m so sorry,” she blurted out, pushing the tablet into Soobin’s lap as she wrapped her arms around Beomgyu.

Beomgyu was stunned by the sudden embrace. He blinked away his tears, arms slowly wrapping around Hiyyih as her grip on him tightened. He patted her back, confused but accepting of the hug.

“Why are you apologizing?” He asked.

“This is all my fault. I’m so sorry,” she confessed, tears beginning to fall down her cheek onto Beomgyu’s shoulder. “You wouldn’t be hurt if it weren’t for me.”

Beomgyu gently pushed her back, eyebrows furrowed. “Hiyyih, what are you talking about?”

Bahiyyih looked around at everyone’s eyes locked on her. Everyone was confused and taken aback. The silence was deafening. Hanni took Hiyyih’s hand, providing her support knowing what she was trying to do.

“I have a confession to make,” she began, her voice cracking as she mustered up the courage to finally tell them everything. She knew there was a chance they wouldn’t forgive her, but she’d rather they hear it from her than Soojung. It was time they knew it all. “Everything bad that’s been happening between you, Yeonjun, YN… is because of me.”

Beomgyu’s face softened. He didn’t know what she meant at first, but seeing the way Hiyyih’s lip quivered as she explained the situation made his chest tighten. She confessed how she had been spying on him and YN, telling Soojung everything she overheard about them. How Soojung had been using Yeonjun to get into Beomgyu’s head. How it was all an elaborate plan to break down YN so she would fail her second review with NYU, giving Soojung the advantage to steal the spotlight despite not being the show’s lead.

It was so much. Too much. None of the boys spoke for what seemed like hours. They all took in the information, processing the rush of emotions they were all experiencing until they were left with one.

Anger.

“So, you’ve been spying on Beomgyu and YN to help Soojung ruin YN’s future?” Taehyun asked, his voice alarmingly calm.

Hiyyih nodded, shame overtaking her.

“That would explain why Soojung has suddenly been tweeting to Yeonjun like they’re friends. I should’ve asked him about it, but he’s been so off lately? It felt like he was gonna snap any moment.” Taehyun sighed. “I just don’t understand one thing. Why would you agree to do something like this, Hiyyih?”

“Soojung is one of the drama club’s most prominent members. She’s the star. She promised Hanni and I would be her club successors if we stuck by her. That included doing as she said to get back at YN for trying to steal her spot at NYU. But it was a lie! YN never did anything wrong. Soojung is trying to steal her spot because Juilliard didn’t want her!”

“I’m so sorry I let this happen to you,” Kai said. He looked over to his sister, his chest filled with pity. He got up, walked over to her side, and pulled her into a hug. A hug she immediately melted into. Telling her brother everything and having him respond with compassion was all Hiyyih needed to fall apart and finally accept what she had done. Kai pats her head, trying to soothe her. He felt responsible for not doing his job as her big brother by protecting her better when he knew Soojung wasn’t a good influence. Part of him thought maybe it was just a biased opinion.

“It’s not your fault, Hiyyih,” He reassured. “She manipulated everyone. She took advantage of you guys.”

Hearing Kai’s assurance to Hiyyih caused Hanni to finally break. She broke down into tears, leaning on Hiyyih’s back while Kai gently pulled her into their hug. Hanni didn’t know them the way Bahiyyih did, but seeing the way they only met her with love and support made her realize just how badly Soojung had manipulated them. Everything she thought about YN and her friends was untrue. Everything she had done in the name of displaced justice and false promises made her sick to her stomach.

“We have to do something,” Hanni mewled. “Soojung can’t win.”

“I think she already has,” Beomgyu’s voice finally broke. “I broke YN’s heart. She probably hates me.”

Beomgyu looked up at everyone, tears brimming in his eyes. He felt like a fool. This entire time, he was trying to protect his heart from inevitable pain by losing YN the way he lost Jieun. But, from the start, his heart was used as a pawn to break YN. He fell for Soojung’s trap and let their fearmongering win. And Yeonjun. His best friend. He felt awful for believing Yeonjun was capable of being a bad friend. How could he have known his words were being carefully chosen for him? He couldn’t have. But, he should have. He knows Yeonjun better than anyone. At least, he thought he did.

“No!” Soobin slammed his fist on the table. “There’s still time to fix this! Opening night hasn’t happened yet. I’ve had enough of Soojung hurting people for her own self-gain. We’re not giving up so easily this time.”

“How the hell are we supposed to fix this? Opening night is in two days.” Taehyun frowned.

“I don’t know. But, I know our first step,” Soobin sighed. “We have to tell Yeonjun. Now.”
