let’s not be lonely

he would never admit it, but taehyun thought of himself as a hopeless romantic. not in the way that he wanted to do cheesy things in public and recite love poetry, but in the way that he wanted to be so deeply connected to somebody else that he’d begin to worry if he could ever live without them.

pairing kang taehyun x fem! reader

you’d lost yourself in more ways than one only a month ago. life had became so dull and boring after the five boys left you, so much so that you didn’t want to remember. you didn’t want to remember their names and their faces, and the time you’d spent with each of them. hell, you didn’t even want to remember the person you’d been before you met them.

you weren’t yourself. your smile didn’t reach your eyes, you hardly spent time with your friends and you definitely didn’t keep up with the band anymore. it was as if life had lost all meaning.

so you did the only thing that felt right — rid yourself of any memories relating to yeonjun, soobin, beomgyu, taehyun and kai.

not that you remembered doing it, but you still weren’t sure if you were happy with the change. you still weren’t yourself, and you didn’t even know why. the old version of you would know, because she’d been the kind to spend most of her time alone and use any spare time to work on her radio show. the new version of you couldn’t even remember what she used to do in her spare time.

naturally, you tried to fill that time. when sunghoon invited you to his friend’s party, you agreed despite not being able to come up with anything worse you’d rather do with your time.

he’d left you about an hour ago. you’d found the perfect spot against a wall and slowly sipped on whatever cherry-red liquid it was that they’d been serving. it was sickly sweet and left a bitter taste on your tongue, but you didn’t mind as long as it did its job.

it wasn’t until half an hour later that you decided to finally give up your patch of wall and go find sunghoon. when you spotted him, he was talking with his friend that you’d met a few times before. his name was jake, and he spoke fluent english with an australian accent. you assumed he was from australia, but never took enough interest in him to find that out.

‘oh, y/n,’ sunghoon called you over, most people turning their eyes towards you in shock that you’d ever be at a party. ‘do you want another drink?’

‘no, i’m fine,’ you smiled, feeling awkward in jake’s presence. ‘i actually think i’m going to leave soon.’

‘you need a ride?’ jake spoke, making you whip your head around to face him. ‘not from me, from a sober friend.’

‘that’s okay,’ you politely declined. ‘it’s not too far from here.’

sunghoon handed his cup to jake and stepped closer to you, his eyes showing his concern. he wrapped his arms around you in a hug, totally out of character for himself.

‘call me when you get home,’ he whispered. ‘and don’t get into any trouble, okay?’

‘got it,’ you smiled, patting his head affectionately.

the cold air of the night was refreshing, but you certainly regretted not bringing a jacket for yourself. you walked with your arms wrapped around your body, checking your phone every few minutes to see what time it was. as you scanned the area out of boredom, you spotted somebody walking on the opposite side of the street. they turned to face you upon feeling your gaze on them, and you were quick to look back down at your feet.

then you could feel their eyes on you, so you looked back to see they didn’t avert their gaze as you had. you shook it off, deciding to stop by the upcoming store for a hot drink.

you sent one last look at the stranger across the street before you turned left into the convenience store. the door beeped as it swung open and closed again behind you, the young cashier looking up from their homework to acknowledge you.

the coffee machine was calling your name, despite the late hour. you grabbed a cup and began tapping on the touchscreen when the door beeped again. turning back, you failed to realise it was the stranger from earlier who was coming in. well, it was hard to recognise somebody whose face you had never seen before.

you grabbed your coffee and a lid, making your way over to the cashier and placing the cash down on the counter. he lazily took it before you walked away, continuing your walk home while gratefully sipping from your coffee.

‘excuse me,’ you stopped in your tracks, turning to see somebody standing not too far from you. ‘you forgot your change.’

‘oh, i thought i had the exact amount,’ you stepped forward, and he held his palm out to you. ‘thank you.’

‘do you mind if i ask for your name?’ taehyun was hopeful. something about you left him intrigued, and he knew he couldn’t walk away without finding out more.

‘oh, it’s y/n,’ you looked at him with confusion. ‘why?’

‘no reason,’ he shrugged. ‘you have a pretty name.’

‘well, thank you,’ you smiled. ‘what’s yours?’

before he could speak, his phone began to buzz with a call. he fished it out of his pocket and held it up to his ear, mouthing an apology before turning around and walking away. you froze, watching him disappear down the street. was that all?

of course, you began to follow him. when he noticed you at his side, he lowered his phone and covered the microphone before looking at you expectantly.

‘i didn’t get your name,’ you reminded.

‘it’s taehyun,’ he still had that same emotionless look on his face as he began talking on the phone again. ‘sorry… no, nothing’s wrong. can i call you back?’

‘well, taehyun,’ you stopped in front of him, folding your arms across your chest. ‘what the hell was that?’

‘what do you mean?’ he dropped his phone back into the pocket of his jeans. ‘i can’t ask for your name?’

‘i don’t understand why you’d ask that and then walk away from me,’ you frowned.

‘i had to take a call,’ he explained simply. ‘aren’t you cold?’

‘i’m very cold, but that’s not what’s important at present,’

‘do you want my coat?’

‘what? no…’

‘take it,’

before you could refuse, he was already slipping the material off his shoulders and handing it to you. you stood staring blankly at him as he held it out to you, so he took matters into his own hands and wrapped the coat around your shoulders. the action resulted in him accidentally pulling you closer, and you gasped as you almost lost your footing and fell forwards into him.

‘seriously, i don’t need this,’ you huffed. ‘how will i even give it back to you?’

‘give me your phone,’ he held his hand out, which you stared blankly at before looking back up at him with confusion. ‘relax, i’m not robbing you.’

‘and how could i know that for sure?’ you shot back, but still held your now unlocked phone out towards him. he took it, saved his contact to your phone and sent a text to himself before giving it back. ‘you could have just asked for my number earlier.’

‘i didn’t want your number,’ he lied, evident in his smile. ‘you were the one that chased after me.’

‘you are a mystery, taehyun,’ you smiled, dropping your phone into the pocket of his coat.

you hadn’t expected to click so easily with a stranger. you’d never been a believer in love at first sight and thought that time was what built a strong relationship, not chance. but talking to taehyun began to change your mind. it was so easy to talk to him because he understood you on a level nobody else could.

he matched your energy perfectly whenever you talked over text, and always knew the right thing to say over the phone. whenever you talked about your feelings, he didn’t make you feel judged or alienated, he simply listened. and taehyun, of all people, knew exactly how you were feeling.

you weren’t one to invite strangers to your home, but taehyun didn’t feel like a stranger to you. it felt as though you’d known each other since the beginning, and not only for a month.

now taehyun was a frequent visitor at your dorm, and all of your roommates knew him by name. they teased you about it often, pointing out the way he looks at you or the way you trip over your own words around him. not that you minded, the idea of a romantic relationship with him had always been a thought in the back of your mind.

‘can i ask you something?’ you looked over at taehyun before quickly looking away. he noticed you were nervously fiddling with the sleeve of your top but made no move to stop you.

‘sure, go ahead,’ he gave you his full attention.

‘what made you ask for my name?’ you met his eyes then, unsure whether you should look away or not.

‘i don’t know,’ he shrugged. not exactly the answer you were looking for. ‘but i’m glad i did.’

‘i’m glad you did too,’ you smiled shyly, dropping your gaze to your own hand that still fiddled with the material of your sleeve. this time taehyun did reach his hand over and place it atop yours, making the movement stop.

‘if you need me to be honest, i thought it was strange that you were walking away from a lively party all alone,’ he began, your ears practically perking up with interest. ‘i didn’t intend to follow you, we just ended up in the same place at the same time. i guess i felt like i had to do something, because walking away would probably be my biggest regret.’

‘then why were you hesitant even after asking?’ you didn’t mean to pry, you were just so curious. taehyun barely ever opened up to you like this, so you wanted as much information as he was willing to give you.

‘i don’t normally do things like that,’ he shrugged, his gaze faltering before he looked away completely. ‘i liked this girl once, a long time ago. i liked her so much but i did nothing to let her know, and she ended up dating one of my closest friends. i was so angry with him and her for falling in love and taking away my chance at love, only to find out it had all been a lie when she confessed to putting my friend under a love spell.’

you didn’t mean to gasp out of shock, it just sort of happened. taehyun looked back at you, and then down at your hand which was now tightly gripping his and close to cutting off his circulation.

‘i’m sorry,’ you whispered. ‘go on.’

‘i guess i just stopped believing in love after that,’ he looked into your eyes. ‘how could i possibly believe in love when the example i was shown had been clouded by deception? but when i saw you, i don’t know… something told me to try again.’

‘so… this is more than just a friendship to you?’ you wanted to sound casual and unbothered, but not too unbothered that it sounded like you were rejecting him. you could only hope he couldn’t hear your heart beating a mile a minute.

‘i don’t typically hold hands with my friends on their couch like this,’ he almost smirked, making you look down at your hands and finally notice the tight grip you had on his. ‘you don’t have to let go just because i pointed it out.’

‘i’m sorry, you just make me so nervous,’ now, why would you admit that out loud, to his face? ‘i mean, not in a bad way.’

‘you don’t need to apologise to explain yourself to me,’ he smiled wider. ‘i like holding your hand.’

nothing can ever be rushed into. there’s no time limit or deadline when it comes to love, only statements spread as propaganda by the majority. at least that’s what you were learning to believe when it came to taehyun. you craved for his presence. you’d lost yourself and didn’t know where to begin again, but he seemed like the perfect starting point. and he wanted to fall in love, something easily achieved when it came to you.

people say that you need to love yourself before you can love somebody else, but neither of you believed that. the two of you could grow together — you needed each other to grow.

without taehyun, you’d still be walking aimlessly. you didn’t know what you wanted or needed before you met him, but now you were starting to learn. he was your safe place for whenever you sought advice or guidance, or even just a hand to hold. the way he loved was subtle but intense, the exact thing you needed.

it was another rainy day, literally and figuratively. you had no motivation to do anything, staying wrapped up in your bed and mindlessly fiddling with the corner of your duvet cover.

taehyun was good at sensing these things. you explained to him how you felt and about the months that seemed to slip your mind, so he knew the signs. you would reply with one or two words and disappear for hours, and he knew what he needed to do.

the door pushed open softly and you lifted your gaze to see him standing in the doorway. he was holding a bag in one hand that seemed to be the only thing not ruined by the rain — you couldn’t say the same for his hair and clothes. you climbed out of bed, gratefully wrapped your arms around his waist and rested your head against his chest.

he reciprocated the hug, wrapping his arms around you and tightening his hold reassuringly.

‘i’m sorry i couldn’t get here sooner,’ he mumbled, but you shook your head and pulled away. ‘band practice.’

‘you’re too good to me,’ you frowned.

‘if that’s the case, i can go and throw all of these snacks away,’ he lightened the mood. there was nothing worse than when you felt guilty for feeling this way. nobody understood the experience of gaps appearing in your life like he did.

‘please don’t,’ you smiled, making him smile in return.

‘you know i’ll always be here for you,’ he placed his hand on your back and pulled you back towards him. ‘don’t feel guilty for needing or wanting me to be around, the feeling of being wanted by you outweighs that.’

what did you do in a past life to deserve him? you groaned with frustration, unable to express how thankful you were for him. you leaned closer to kiss him, gripping his forearm for support before you pulled away. taehyun smiled pridefully, making you laugh.

“So, I’m kind of thinking of growing out my hair then bleaching it blonde when I’m a little older.” Hiyyih hummed, staring at a few strands of her brown hair in her hands.

“Hm, like golden?” Y/N replied, setting down a can of sprite from her lips and squinting her eyes at the younger female—visualizing what she would look like with different hairstyles.

“I’m thinking platinum?” Hiyyih questioned, before both girls’ heads turned to the older Huening who sat next to them gulping down a bottle of grape soda.

“I don’t even want to think about it.” Kai mumbled as he set down his bottle. “I will never bleach my hair. I’d look bad.”

“Oh, you will one day. It would look pretty on you.” Y/N cooed, pinching his cheeks which he batted away with a chuckle.

This was her daily routine ever since the Huenings moved to their village, at the vacant apartment right next to hers. With her trusty shy friend Kai, who she discovered was the same age as she was, and his younger sister Hiyyih—sometimes with their older sister Lea—she was all set in her little freshman world. Everyday consisted of bets, laughter and fun—she couldn’t ask for anything better.

Y/N giggled as both Hiyyih and Kai started a little argument about how they don’t look too identical (the girl believed she can buy Kai a wig to pretend he was Hiyyih in class) when the boy groaned and threw his head back.

“It’s so hot.” The boy whined. “The fan isn’t doing anything anymore.”

“Open a window.” Hiyyih shrugged, glancing back at the closed window.

The boy promptly stood up, truding over the couch and opening a window before turning to their friend with a smile.

“Remember when you lost a bet to me?”

“I did?” Y/N raised an eyebrow as the boy chuckled maniacally.

“Yeah, you bet me yesterday that I wouldn’t be able to let Soobin-hyung get me off the hook for junior basketball practice to go get shakes with you.” He mumbled proudly, making the girl grumble.

Soobin was training the new members basketball team as he was lined up to become the next basketball co-captain. He has a fond preference for Hueningkai—which gives him special privileges to slack off every once in a while. Of course, Y/N bet that he wouldn’t be able to slack off so near regionals. She was wrong.

“What do you want?” Y/N mumbled, making Hiyyih giggle and raise her hands.

“A milkshake!”

“Actually, can you go get me coffee from that nearby café?” Kai grinned. “I’m trying something new.”

“You seem to forget that I’m have no money.” Y/N whined, which made the boy shrug.

“A deal is a deal.”

And so, she was off, trudging into the nearby café. Ghosting, it was called. Newly established and had that addicting caffeine smell. Maybe she could try something new too.

As she stood a few feet away from the register, perusing over what kind of coffee options she could buy for both her and Kai (who knew there were so many variations of coffee?), her eyes fell on a boy sitting at a nearby table with red-rimmed glassy eyes and a poker face. He wasn’t really drinking anything, though there was an empty glass at the seat in front of him telling her someone sat there before.

Pursing her lips, Y/N checked her wallet and pulled out last week’s allowance, before stepping up to the register and chatting with the barista. The barista shared that the boy had been sitting there alone for about an hour now. A nasty break-up, she said. So, Y/N ordered Hiyyih’s milkshake and three caramel makyatoes as the barista recommended. She gathered all drinks in a plastic bag, holding one separately as she walked over and placed it in front of the emotionless boy.

“I heard it was a break up.” Y/N muttered softly, tilting her head. “It’ll be okay.”

“Have you had one?” The boy replied, making the girl purse her lips in thought.

“Well… no… I’ve never had a boyfriend.” Y/N crossed her arms. “Wait, no, maybe I had one in kindergarten but I kind of kicked him when he kissed me in recess.”

There was no resonating laughter at that joke, making the girl pout.

“I know it hurts, because you’re crying, but really—”

“She said I’m a loser nerd.” The boy frowned, rubbing his eyes. “I don’t take care of myself and I’m boring—that I keep talking about weird stuff. That I don’t look handsome.”

“That’s mean.” Y/N raised her eyebrows, taking a seat in front of the boy. “She shouldn’t have.”

“She has another boyfriend now, the captain of the basketball team. He’s a senior.”

“Oh, Jeongmin?” Y/N curled her lips in disgust. “He sucks. He makes fun of my friend just because he’s taller than him.”

The boy didn’t reply.

“Well, forget about her and Jeongmin.” Y/N waved him off. “Look at this as a clean slate. So what if you’re a nerd, I don’t think you’re a loser or boring! And who is she to tell you you’re not handsome?”

“I have stick arms.”

“Then get some muscle, learn a sport. It’s achievable.” Y/N ranted. “Being smart isn’t. That’s an advantage over Jeongmin that you have. Plus, you’re attractive, believe me.”

The boy’s lips twitched slightly.

“Get some friends, a girlfriend who isn’t superficial. Be the better version of who you are now. Show her the best you that you can be and what she gave up for that poopface.” Y/N listed down on her hands. “Oh, and there’s always someone that will support you!”

“Who?”

“Me, and that’s a promise.” Y/N grinned, holding out her pinky. “I never break my promises.”

“Okay.” The boy chuckled softly, hesitating slightly before wrapping his pinky around hers. “Fine, but I think I’ll back off on romance now. This sucks.”

“Baby steps.” Y/N smiled. “What’s your name? I don’t think I’ve seen you around.”

“Oh, my name is Taehyun. I—”

Ring. Ring.

Y/N smiled sheepishly, picking up her phone with a grumble.

“What do you want?”

“What’s taking so long? Where’s my cold coffee?”

“Shut up, I’m dealing with a crisis. It’s here in tact—” Y/N rolled her eyes, holding up the plastic bag holding their coffee cups and gasped at the almost melted ice. “Oh no, it’s melting. I’m coming back now!”

Taehyun tilted his head in confusion as the girl shoved her phone back in her pocket and grinned at the boy.

“You’ll get through it, believe me.” Y/N smiled, zooming away before the boy could even process what happened.

The boy only sighed, turning over to the glass windows and watching her turn a corner and disappear into an alleyway. His eyes fell onto his reflection on the windows.

Show her the best you that you can be and what she gave up for that with that poopface.

Then, his eyes fell on the boxing gym located in front of the café.

All that happened 6 years ago. They’re in college now.

Taehyun became taller, a little bulkier. The loser nerd became the attractive, aloof genius of the school.

Kai grew up and out of his shell, mixed in with the popular crowd (and bleached his hair). He fell out of his friendship with Y/N—never talking to her again once he got too busy with his own activities. He found his own group of friends—and a new best friend in Taehyun.

Y/N remained as she was. A homebody, sticking close to Hiyyih and her newfound friends while silently supporting that crying boy she saw in the café.

Even if he did steal her best friend.

Even if he didn’t seem to remember her, or what she said, or even glance at her.

She never breaks her promises, after all.
