Our whole house smells of lilies, which is quite a feat as they are competing with the smell of wet dog (freshly towelled but still looking very sorry for himself. Druid does not like rain!) The sensuality of our entwinement with all else that lives is one of the many delights of having a body. In the strangely beautiful light of not particularly sunny summer evenings I become entranced by colours and shapes. Everything is so beautiful; soft spoken and full of feral intelligence. This evening I hear the wisdom of the field’s edge, dotted with so many exquisite pairings - crow peas and stitchwort, stitchwort and creeping speedwell - there are things to eat, medicines, and things for those with more stomachs than us...she says everything we need is right here, we just need to know what we’re looking at. I go home with yarrow and sorrel for salad, nettle seeds for winter stores and sunshine in my heart. There is more to foraging than tending your belly she says. Home made facial in a home made bowl. The cleansing mask is the best I’ve ever used by a mile... the juice of half a (fresh organic) lemon, a teaspoon of (local) honey and enough bicarbonate of soda to turn it into a paste. 15 years ago the most wonderful man and I got married. When he woke me with a cup of tea this morning (I know... how lucky am I?!) he asked me if I’d slept well. When I said I had he told me “that’s because we’re married”, and I think he’s right. I’m always full of hope because my life is full of love. I have so much gratitude for that. I love you Fergus Crockford. My life hasn’t always been this way, I’ve been deeply unhappy in the past, but I had just enough self esteem left to extricate myself from a soul crushing situation when it really did become too awful. I’ve spent the morning so far grating Marseille soap for my home made, zero waste, washing powder. It’s half soap half sodium bicarbonate with a sprinkle of essential oils. It works better than any washing powder I’ve ever bought and is a fraction of the cost, both financially and environmentally. There are so many ways we can make a difference, the more ways, the more difference. While the government and big business gamble with our lives we can and must change the paradigm.
