Me, watching a documentary about one of the coldest cities on earth: oh. yeah. in my hometown once the temperature dropped to 15 degrees celsius (59F) and it made it to the newspaper. yeah

I like how the frost giants in Thor 1 are presented as these scar-riddled tough-skinned creatures with heavy voices that inspire fear in even the Asgardians and then the few times we see Loki transform he’s got smooth baby skin, well defined skin markings, softest shade of blue imaginable
#my theory is the ones we saw were all old warriors so they’ve all got marks from war fighting and general survival#loki doesn’t have those kinds of injuries so of course his hand looks delicate in comparison to the jotun holding his arm#he hasn’t weathered through the extreme cold or the few extra millennia they all have on him#plus he’s way smaller practically a baby even that’s how I explain the smoothness away

Genuinely so disappointed with how little worldbuilding there is of Jotunheim in the mcu AND the comics. Like you mean to tell me theres a whole realm made of ice that can sustain a population of literal giants and huge terrible beasts, and youre not even a little bit interested in how it works??

COLD WEATHER TIPS AND RESOURCES (ALBERTA BASED)
all resources will be alberta based as that is where i am located, however i’d like to expand this list to the rest of my nation’s homelands which are saskatchewan and manitoba mainly.
i made this post the other day and i wanted to add more resources and information!
my basic tips for anyone in the cold
1. Layers will save your life wether you have actual winter gear or not. I exclusively wear baggy pants for comfort and style, but also so that i can wear at least 2 base layers, my go-to is a base layer of waffle weave long johns under tapered sweatpants (tapered is important to me personally, It makes it so i can tuck my pants into my boots easily!)
2. the rule with layering is that you still must have your entire range of motion so that you can keep blood flow to all your extremities, ESPECIALLY your fingers and toes. If two pairs of socks make it so you can’t move your toes around, ditch the second layer. Same with gloves. On that note- i prefer mittens to gloves with individual fingers. They might have more mobility but mittens are more comfortable for me personally.
3. Wind protection- staying out of the wind is the most important part of all of this. wind chill can make the air feel significantly colder, wind burn and frostbite can set in within 10 minutes of skin being exposed to extreme cold like the -40 C and below weather alberta has been experiencing. Wether you protect yourself from the wind.
4. if you absolutely have to sleep rough find a place that is a) safe and accessible for you and your needs b) out of the wind, and c) a place you can set up a tent or tarp. i can’t stress enough how much colder the wind makes things.
5. FOR HOUSED FOLKS. ESPECIALLY SETTLERS. if you see someone sleeping rough, use the resources provided. ask them if they need help. hell, if you have a spare room, heated garage, empty basement, fucking let your neighbours in!!! do what you can within your means and with the privilege you have. if you can’t provide a warm space you can provide other necessities.
necessities for unhoused folks braving this weather:
-MONEY (i can’t stress this enough. i don’t care if they buy drugs or alcohol, harm reduction saves lives)
- hand warmers
-easy to eat snacks (nothing crunchy, lots of folks have dental issues)
-gloves
-toques
-scarves
-socks
-long johns and leggings (waffle knit is everything in this weather)
-wind breakers/wind pants
-winter jackets and snow pants
-sturdy warm shoes
-water bottles
-cigarettes
-gift cards for food (i know a lot of you got tim’s cards for christmas)

Man, even if they cured covid tomorrow I would still bring a mask with me in winter. That and a hat is like wearing a balaclava that it easy to take off once inside. Even though I wear n-95s now I’m still going to be wearing a cloth one on top this winter because when it’s -18 degrees Fahrenheit (around -27 for you Celsius people) and you have a cloth mask on my skin feels so much less burning and my throat stings less. I don’t know why we didn’t think of this combination sooner but man, I’m not stopping it this winter

I wasn’t as familiar with heat as I was with cold and I really fucked my self up by only drinking#a bunch of water! we get winter survival training as kids but no one went over extreme heat when I was younger#normal heat. sure. but now it is frequently worse#it is hell but at least where I live is famous for lakes#drought is worse though. sometimes rivers dry up so much you can walk through them without getting your thighs wet
