Ok so here's the current rewrite of Aster, Hazel and Sorrel. Very old school fairy tale vibes but I like it so far
Sorrel is now a mere mortal man, a goat herder and woodcarver. I feel like in his youth he was a warrior, but he's put up his weapons long ago. Unfortunately that didn't stop the untimely demise of his wife.
(death may or may not also be after him too)
Sorrel wants children. He and his wife wanted kids, but she passed and he's all alone.
One night he's out in the woods, looking for wood to carve into trinkets and whatnot. As he's carving, he's approached by the Moon Goddess. She is completely enchanted by his work, so much so that she offers him a wish in exchange for a piece.
Sorrel carves her a wolf statue, and asks for a son. The Moon goddess then turns the wolf statue to life (taking one of Sorrels eyes in the process), creating Aster.
Sorrel was surprised but overjoyed with his son, whom he doted and loved with all his heart. Aster needs to hide his nature from the townsfolk, but he's a good (if very anxious) lad.
The steps repeat for Hazel, with Sorrel offering a deer statue (and a literal piece of his heart) for a daughter. The three live very quiet lives, although something is definitely brewing under the surfave
(that's the story yet to be decided)
Sorrel technically shares custody with the Moon Goddess, bc the Moon Goddess is kinda Asters and Hazels mom, but she only sees them once a year and full a single lunar cycle.

But yeah somehow I nearly fell into my bed {well... Would've been falling onto, then off due to the angling} after I unplugged my phone because apparently smooth surfaces are slippery, especially if you are moving fast. And I always move fast, I gotta be moving. {Literally changed how I was sitting like 3 times while typing}
Also, Fun Fact! You are an amazing person and I wanna pepper your face with kisses, maybe even kiss you on the lips after eating some watermelon :³
-Shadow
I am glad you didn't fall, dear shadow 💜

I was gonna write a specific example of people getting theology wrong but let's tackle the problem at the root. People don't understand Catholicism on this website.
There's so much criticism about Christianity and its punitive nature that they forget about the rhetoric of forgiveness, and I believe black Christians and maybe other Christians of colour are far more aware of this than white Christians.
I went to Catholic school for around 14 years, and within those 14 years, although there was some rhetoric of punishing those who did wrong, what I heard way more was "forgive not 7 times, but 77" and "turn the other cheek" and so on.
We had a former gang member come into our school and talk about how he's changed a new leaf and been forgiven by God, which is fine, but also does not fit with the rhetoric on here of "Christianity punitive", not in the sense that some people here mean it anyways.
And that's because people forget that Catholic guilt isn't about guilting others. It's about guilting yourself for feeling emotions that are "bad to feel." I know this personally from 14 years in Catholic education, and I think a lotta African-Americans do too. Remember when Botham Jean's brother hugged that cop? That self-imposed guilt and requirement to forgive is part of the reason why.
Catholicism is the perfect panopticon not because it shames others into doing the "right thing" but rather it gets you to do it to yourself.
So yes, while you could say, "callout culture" is neo-puriticanal behaviour, the idea that we gotta forgive people always just because they've nominally changed is neo-Catholic behaviour.
My point is that making surfave level comparisons between modern phenomenon and various sects of Christianity is a somewhat fruitless endeavour, and it's getting a bit boring now innit.

Yeah I went back and reread the tuonela article properly, tbh I can see how a lot of it feels surface level, the one thing I didn't like was the bit about "not having the history of poverty or abuse" that their inspirations do, like yes they grew up middle class and stuff (i assume) but nobody knows what's going on behind closed doors. I agree with what you said about them not owing us their trauma, even if it does lead to surfave level stuff :/
yeah that part I hated too, the writer acting like they know what the guys have and haven't been through, and especially claiming BC have no traumas or mental health issues to write about. like, even if BC had never talked about those things publicly, no one still has the right to claim they haven't experienced anything like that because just cus someone hasn't shared their trauma doesn't mean there is none. but BC has been open about the bullying and mental health struggles, which makes that part of the review even more ignorant.

Surf Avenue
Here are a couple of shots of Q train approaching its final stop at Stillwell Avenue, Coney Island. I’m standing on Surf Avenue at West 12th Street, with Luna Park behind me (Wonder Wheel, Cyclone, etc).

I've never been one for the "dad doesn't show any love to daughter until she backs away from him, as she knows from previous life he was scum, and now he wants to have a relationship with her" trope but I've found something better which starts with this trope and flip it?
"Father, I don't want to get married" starts like that snd you think it'll just continue on that trope and be boring but? We get a few clues that changes our perspective? And has us doubt truly how cold the father is?
I really recommend that manhwa. It's a 8, 8.5/10.
