Teulada (Sardinia). Torre del Budello or Sant Juan del Bodel (1601). The tower and the beach of Budello are located on the Teuladian coast of the Sardinian Channel. The tower, placed on the hill, dominates the bay and looks out for the other towers in the vicinity. It was built by an entrepreneur from Cagliari, a certain Pietro Porta, who however had the contribution of the Royal administration of the towers and was built with the typical characteristics of the others: truncated cone shape, a room with an entrance raised from the base, where the cistern was instead and supported the parade ground (terrace) with a central pillar. Rivalutare le vecchie miniere per ricerca scientifica ed escursioni

La nuova vita delle miniere dal turismo ai data center. C'è un nuovo corso che spazia dal turismo alla ricerca scientifica per arrivare ai data center.  Sono le diverse vite che interesseranno le miniere sparse in Italia e caratterizzate da infrastrutture costate negli anni centinaia di milioni di euro e che ora potranno avere un nuovo utilizzo. Le macchine perforatrici sono spente da tempo e la produzione terminata. Non a caso, nel mondo della ricerca è iniziata una sorta di corsa alle infrastrutture minerarie utilizzabili. «Gli scavi minerari in sotterraneo sono il risultato di enormi investimenti realizzati per raggiungere giacimenti minerari e poterli estrarre - premette Fabio Granitizio, geologo minerario con esperienza in ambito internazionale -.  Una volta abbandonate, se in buone condizioni, queste preziose infrastrutture hanno numerosi potenziali utilizzi, in alcuni casi davvero unici e insostituibili». Uno su tutti, come sottolinea il geologo, «i grandi esperimenti di fisica delle particelle». «Le rocce che sovrastano scavi profondi hanno la capacità infatti di schermare la costante “pioggia” di particelle cosmiche che investe la superficie della terra - aggiunge -. Ecco che per identificare particelle sfuggenti, come quelle che costituiscono la materia oscura, è necessario usare strumenti sofisticati, e sensibili, collocati in contesti privi del disturbo rappresentato dalle altre particelle». La caccia ai nuovi siti Proprio per questo motivo, a partire dagli ultimi 15 anni, è partita una vera e propria caccia alle strutture dismesse ma ancora utilizzabili, «da destinare a laboratori di fisica per esperimenti a grande scala». Un sorta di corsa all’oro, dove l’oro è rappresentato dalle infrastruttura e dagli spazi generati con le estrazioni minerarie. «Si valuta che negli Usa siano disponibili al momento circa 272.000 metri cubi di spazi idonei, destinati a utilizzi scientifici - argomenta ancora -, mentre  in Europa tale volume ammonta a 220.000 metri cubi, e in Asia sia pari a 267000 metri cubi. Dati importanti, sopratutto quelli che ci riguardano, che non possono essere trascurati». La ricerca scientifica In questo ambito, qualcosa comincia a muoversi anche in Italia. A seguire la strada dell’utilizzo in ambito scientifico sono soprattutto i siti minerari presenti in Sardegna. Uno di questi riguarda il progetto Aria, ossia il programma per lo studio della materia oscura e la produzione di gas rari. Il tutto utilizzando la verticale dei pozzi della miniera di Carbone del Sulcis (quella di Monte Sinni a Nuraxi Figus). Il tutto attraverso una sorta di alambicco che dovrebbe servire a distillare l’aria e ricavare quindi gli isotopi. Il progetto che mette assieme l’Istituto nazionale di fisica nucleare, l’università di Cagliari, quella di Princeton, come sottolineano i responsabili, «va avanti spedito». Energia dall’aria compressa Nello stesso sito minerario, inoltre, la società titolare della concessione ha attivato le procedure per un altro progetto. Quello di trasformare le gallerie chiuse in serbatoi per l’aria compressa da utilizzare successivamente per produrre energia. «Su questo fronte siamo ancora in fase di studio - dice Francesco Lippi, amministratore unico della Carbosulcis Spa -. I nostri tecnici, assieme ai ricercatori del politecnico di Torino sono al lavoro per costruire le condizioni e quindi predisporre uno studio e un progetto più definito. ...e onde gravitazionali A Lula, in provincia di Nuoro la miniera di  di Sos Enattos, aperta nel 1868 dalla società Paganelli per estrarre galena, blenda (da cui si ricava piombo e zinco) e argento è in corsa  per ospitare l’Einstein Telescope. Il Il progetto prevede la costruzione di un “gigantesco interferometro sotterraneo triangolare per la ricerca delle onde gravitazionali”. L’osservatorio utilizzando l’infrastruttura dei pozzi e gallerie, sarà collocato a circa 200 metri di  profondità, avrà un perimetro di circa 30 chilometri composto da bracci lunghi 10 chilometri. Se un’onda gravitazionale attraversa l’interferometro, la lunghezza dei bracci oscilla e questa infinitesima variazione viene rivelata dall’esperimento. Intervento che dovrebbe avere una ricaduta economica di 6 miliardi di euro in 9 anni. Batterie e data center in galleria Tra le tante ipotesi di sfruttamento delle gallerie e pozzi anche quelle di sistemare gli accumulatori di prossima generazione. Per il momento il progetto è in fase di studio in alcuni centri minerari europei e  si pensa a un suo impiego anche in Italia. Viaggiano a una velocità più spedita poi le ipotesi, e i progetti collegati, per ospitare i server in sottosuolo. Le gallerie delle miniere metallifere del Sulcis hanno suscitato l’interesse di diversi gruppi intenzionati a trasformare gallerie e vuoti minerari in data center. Per gli esperti sarebbero luoghi ideali per la sistemazione dei dispositivi elettronici. Turisti in miniera C’è poi l’altra strada che, in alcuni centri è già iniziata. Ossia quella delle escursioni turistiche. Molte amministrazioni pubbliche titolari dei compendi minerari hanno già trasformato  i siti e, in particolare le gallerie, in obiettivi turistici con tanto di visite guidate. Non è certo un caso che proprio i percorsi minerari e le visite in galleria siano al centro della giornata Nazionale delle miniere che ogni anno l’Ispra promuove assieme ad Assorisorse e altri organismi. Lo scorso anno, giusto per fare un esempio, le visite hanno spaziato dalle miniere di zolfo di Marche e dell’Emilia Romagna a quelle metallifere della Sardegna. Read the full article

When I was a kid I used to collect fossils and nutcrackers, but I ended up losing them across some really bad moves as an adult.
