Vintage Strawberry Jello
From The Country Cousin in An Academy Award Review of Walt Disney Cartoons
Tumblr media
History
So in the short the country mouse gets into a fist fight with a plate of pink jello while drunk. This is a gag Disney would return too in a later film called Fun and Fancy Free.
Ah, but what flavor of pink? That is the question. I decided to rely on some good old fashioned strawberry, since it's a flavor profile we haven't explored yet on the blog.
Food
The interesting thing about gelation desserts is that they've been around for literal centuries, dating back to the medieval ages. Back then they were used by combining leftover jellified protein from meat dishes, like roasted ham and mixing it with fruit and berries.
It was often a dish for the really wealthy because of the time and the special storage needed to make it. That was until instant gelatin came on the scene.
Pre-packaged gelatin came about during the late victorian era. Jell-O, with its pre-packaged flavors hit stores around the turn of the century and were very popular in the early 20th century. Though the product would hit its stride until the 50s, you can still find vintage ads dating back to the 20s.

1 package of strawberry jello
1 cup boiling water
1 cup of cold water
1 cup heavy whipping cream
4 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Whole strawberries to top garnish
Cookware
Jello mold

Mixing bowl
Whisk
Directions
Boil one cup water
Add jello and stir until dissolved
Add one cup of cold water and pour jello mixture into a jello mold
Let sit in the fridge for at least 30 min to an hour
In a mixing bowl whisk together cream, sugar, and vanilla till soft peaks form
Set whipped in fridge to also chill
When ready to serve, set jello mold in a pot of warm water for a min and then flip out onto a serving tray. Jello should come out smoothly.
Top with whipped cream and strawberries and serve.

One more dessert to go and we'll be nearly done here.

What's a good way to make jello?
Jello is a classic and versatile treat loved by people of all ages. Whether you're planning a fun party, looking for a refreshing dessert, or simply craving a sweet snack, jello is the way to go! Making jello is easy, and with the right ingredients and technique, you can create a wobbly masterpiece that will have everyone asking for seconds. Let's dive into the simple steps to make the best jello ever!
Ingredients:
To make basic jello, you'll need the following ingredients:
- 1 packet of flavored gelatin (choose your favorite!)
- 2 cups of boiling water
- 2 cups of cold water
- Optional: Fresh fruits, whipped cream, or other toppings of your choice.
Instructions:
Follow these step-by-step instructions to create the perfect jello:
1. Prepare the gelatin mixture:
- Empty the packet of flavored gelatin into a heatproof bowl.
- Slowly pour the boiling water over the gelatin while stirring continuously.
- Keep stirring until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
2. Add the cold water:
- Pour in the cold water, stirring gently to combine it with the gelatin mixture.
- This helps cool down the mixture and sets it into the familiar jello texture.
3. Refrigerate and set:
- Carefully pour the mixture into your desired serving dishes or molds.
- If you prefer, add fresh fruits to the mixture before pouring it into the dishes for a fruity twist!
- Place the dishes in the refrigerator and allow them to set for at least 4 hours or until firm.
4. Serve and enjoy:
- Once the jello is fully set, remove it from the refrigerator.
- If desired, top with whipped cream or your favorite toppings to enhance the flavor.
- Serve the jello chilled and delight in its jiggly goodness!
Tips and Variations:
- Experiment with flavors: There are countless gelatin flavors available, so feel free to explore and find your favorite. You can try fruity flavors like strawberry, raspberry, or orange, or go for more unique options like lime, lemon, or even coffee!
- Layered jello: For an eye-catching treat, create multiple layers of different-colored jello. Simply let each layer set before pouring the next one on top.
- Use molds: Play with different molds to give your jello fun shapes, such as hearts, stars, or even animal shapes. Kids especially love these playful creations!
- Adding texture: Consider adding some texture to your jello by mixing in small pieces of fruits, like diced strawberries or peaches, before refrigerating.
Conclusion:
Making jello is a simple and enjoyable process that can lead to a delightful and visually appealing treat. With just a few ingredients and some patience, while it sets, you'll have a wobbly dessert that's sure to impress your friends and family. So go ahead, get creative with flavors, colors, and toppings, and indulge in the fun and delicious world of homemade jello!
