i can't really get over this shot of kas tbh it doesn't help that my computer keeps showing it in the photo tab when i press the windows button in the corner
#i think kas's peak in life is all the years between starting the cult until he gets infected#during that time he's you know. obviously a bad person he kills people and stuff#but he's very. idk expressive and theatrical and treats all of it like a play and he's the star#he's very charismatic is what i'm trying to say but then later on he's just#very numb to all of it killing isn't fun anymore obviously life becomes pretty mundane in a zombie apocalypse#even when you have a cult to run like#he does briefly remember what life used to be like but has lived in the apocalypse for the majority of his life#and i imagine it's kind of at a point where there's no hope for humanity the people who still live just get by#eventually everyone's going to be eradicated and kas has lost the joy of the only purpose he had#not to mention he's you know. slowly turning into a zombie so his future is neither bright nor long lmao#the only time he really expresses any emotion at all is when preaching about him becoming a god or whatever but deep down#he knows that isn't the case it's all just a fantasy to him#he doesn't stop being a terrible person though if anything he gets worse because he's seeking out the thrill it used to give him#and when it doesn't he gets angry and tries even harder and it becomes this cycle. you know#until tristan kills him

That's a good choice! I'll keep this post about Athy, because I have too many favorite lines of hers. But overall, Lucas is probably the one who says the quotes I love the most. My favorites from the novel:
«Lucas, you brat... I'll kill you. Next time we meet, I'll really kill you!»
« I'm not yours, you are mine! »
« If this were a kid's story, everyone could have had their happy endings. No one would have been unfortunate or have any faults. In their perfect forms, everyone could have had their beautiful endings. »
Funny, romantic and thoughtful.
First one is funnier without context. Second one, everyone knows it, it's iconic, no explanations needed. Last one is from the final chapters. I think that line perfectly reflects the novel's philosophy, and it's a nice contrast with the manhwa's different take on the story. Neither is better than the other in my opinion, but rather, that contrast is what makes each other much more fascinating.
And as for the manhwa...
First, this classic (from both the novel and the manhwa). When you think about WMMAP, you think of this scene. Moving and heart-wrenching at the same time.
My absolute favorite quote... This felt like the one chapter where Athy finally exposed her heart to the reader. In volume 7's author notes, Spoon wrote about how she wanted Athy to learn that the love others gave her is not something to be gained or lost, and that she hoped Athy could in that way learn to love herself. That's it, that's Athy's whole character arc in a nutshell. Yeah I'm going to cry.
A simpler line but also a direct thematic continuation to the one shown above. The sequence leading to this is so impactful (I love the alliteration of people asking Athy her name. It's literal poetry, I'm not joking), and the scene that follows even more so...
Putting these scenes together really shows how much Athy grew over the course of the story, huh? From accepting she truly loved Claude but being willing to give that up, to confessing how afraid she was of losing her loved ones' affection, because it was the first time she held anything across three lifetimes, to finally realizing her true self and then being willing to sacrifice herself to protect those she loves.

Monkey King 2009 Episode 3
Them having Stone Monkey (apparently purely on instinct) constantly scratching while being introduced to the troop was pretty cool, since that's a legitimate deescalation behavior in monkeys. Something about how revealing stress acts as a bonding behavior and makes it less likely they'll be attacked. Humans do it too, kind of, when they rub at their hands or shoulders or neck (etc. etc.) when nervous or overwhelmed. ("Empathize with me! I am very stressed!").
Also something-something instinctive behaviors aside Stone Monkey being excited/overwhelmed/maybe a little overstimulated and choosing "ESCALATION!!!" as his response to all of that. He thinks the troop being scared of him is hilarious. He's scratching the fur off his arms but he's also going to get right up in your face anyway. Cautiously join him in admiring his cool new rock? He is going to play-lunge and also scream. Absolutely amazing. The troop has no idea what to do with these mixed signals. This kid is a menace and I love him.
Six Ears even gets in on the scratching behavior occasionally in the background, which might be because Stone Monkey actively terrorizing literally everyone trying to be playful (because he has the social skills of a literal, actual rock) is stressing Six Ears right out or it could be an attempt to deescalate on Stone Monkey's behalf. Monkey version of following in his new friend's wake throwing apologetic grimace-smiles at everyone. Possibly it's both. Point is: They included these behaviors and it's very fun.
You can also tell it worked because in just the journey to the cave you watch the four generals' views on Stone Monkey go from "uncanny valley horror entity lurking in the forest probably to kill us all" to "what a rude little kid >:| Emphasis on RUDE."
And, okay, I admit, I have softened my stance on the four generals. Somewhat. They seem to actually be taking their jobs seriously now. Maybe Episode 1 was a wake-up call and they won't utterly fail to notice an incursion until it's in the heart of their territory again. I don't want to go too crazy, but maybe they'll even be able to even muster a coherent response! Good for them.
Should probably still not be managing children, though.
Speaking of, Six Ears's increasing despair watching the train wreck in motion that was the four generals fumbling hard in giving Stone Monkey his very first etiquette lesson after he finally settled down and seemed willing to hear them out is also very relatable and hilarious. He knows they failed the test. Stone Monkey is definitely never going to listen to them again. They blew it. RIP Flower Fruit Mountain.
Stone Monkey does check in with Six Ears when he decides the generals are useless about explaining though, and that's pretty cute. He trusts his friend :) He also definitely internalizes that thing about having to ask to leave the presence of the king, so at least they managed to teach him some manners. ONE manners. A single manner. (Spoiler: They immediately regret this.)
But hey! This time Six Ears is left entirely to his own devices and still manages to get caught smack in the middle of enemy action. Not the Generals' fault for once! Six Ears just attracts this kind of thing, I guess.
3/3 Six Ears is Damsel-ed, but only 2/3 it's the adults' fault. The tally develops.

Most spiders are cool with me but wolf spiders freak me the hell out. Rescued one from my dad's pool years ago and the second I set it down on the ground all of its babies (which I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT) scattered. I know in theory they are harmless friends but in practice their presence makes me so uncomfortable. I still don't kill them though.
that's fair! the babies thing IS kind of alarming to see, especially if you're not ready for it ^^;; if it helps, spiderlings only stay with their mother for a couple of weeks and, during that time, only leave her if disturbed, so it's reasonably unlikely that any given individual will explode babies (I've only ever seen mother wolfs carrying babies a couple of times, myself). many wolf spiders also closely resemble members of several other families of spider, so it's also fairly likely that any given wolf spider is actually a male grass spider looking for a girlfriend! I know that doesn't necessarily tip the balance on a gut discomfort, though ^^;
wolf spiders are also completely unique in this kind of parental care, and extremely rare among spiders for doing any parental care at all! another family of spiders known for protecting and providing for their young after they're born are literally named for the behavior (the nursery-web spiders: they build a shelter for their young to live in, and watch over them until they disperse). both families are active hunters (they don't build webs) and also carry their eggs with them; wolf spiders drag the eggsac behind attached to the spinnerets, and nursery web spiders carry them SUPER awkwardly under their bellies for some reason?? the families are very visually similar (the most reliable way to tell them apart is by how their eyes are arranged) but some nursery spiders get FUCKIN, COLOSSAL, so if you've ever seen a wolf spider the size of a goddamn dinner plate it was probably actually a nursery web or fishing spider, lmao. ...this is all completely unrelated to your ask, btw, I'm just on a stream of consciousness spider tangent now cause I think they're neat 👉👈

my completely unprompted anime hot take of the day was that I hated ultimate bladeworks

i need to kill the creature in my brain i think
#gripping it and shaking it and slamming it to the ground#sometimes it is small and little. like a hamster or perhaps a domesticated rat. it is managable#i can hold it and cuddle it close to my chest and go hey. Hey. you're okay. promise. you've misinterpreted something#and here is what is actually happening.#and other times. it is just a giant hulking mass of dark fuzzy goop and if it touches you you lose time and everything is fuzzy and muted#and you are beating it off with a broom or a stick or your bare hands or a childhood book you grabbed off the shelf#and it's larger than the room you're in and it's all encompasing and it's so so so so so fucking Mean to you.#and i can't ever kill it. but sometimes if i take a nap. or cry it out. it at least gets smaller. maybe down to a Particularly irate#large dog. and then from there. when we have both calmed down. i can see that this dog just has a thorn or a sticker in its paw or something#and i can help it. and we can both calm down. and we are both so so so tired. and it will go back to being a hamster. and i can hold it.#and this cycle will always repeat#you pick out the hurt and you look at it and you go Well. seeing it helps. and i at least Know now. what hurt me so bad#but it doesn't necessarily stop you from stepping in the sticker patch again y'know??#especially when sometimes i think my parents will toss whole sticker bushes at me and not realize it#and i feel lowkey like i'm sitting in the middle of the elementary school baseball diamond again. surrounded by stickers and goatheads.#none of this makes sense but i am Very bad with emotion words. i have sad and happy and a few other specific ones#but for the most part beyond that?? every feeling i feel is not Words it is Situations And The Feelings Attached To It#loving my dog is like being taken to an ice cream shop on your birthday as a young child#loving my best friend is like standing in the grass with your shoes wet from the dew watching the sunrise and the specific rose-pink#that the clouds turn in mid-august.

ough... oh dear, ever? probably one of my d&d characters, Suledin. he was kind of a parody of stereotypical broody elf "i am the night" type characters and his family had all been killed by drow so of course he immediately fell in love with the first one he came across, an NPC named Sarith. i negotiated with our DM to replace the musical instrument proficiency he would have gotten from the Outlander background with proficiency in Edgy Poetry instead XD
the halfling sorcerer in our group used Prestidigitation to make all of his food taste like pickles to make fun of him and like Every session Suledin (who was the party healer despite being a ranger cos we just. didn't have anyone else with Cure Wounds) would have to have an emotionally charged scene healing Sarith because Sarith only had an AC of like 11. everyone in the party was rooting for them

hm... making them ROs, i suppose XD that probably sounds trite but i think designing character arcs that progress via. meeting someone new and growing because of it is a pretty gentle and nice thing to do for someone overall.

When I think about it it’s actually kind of weird that JRO retroactively wrote in that around the time Megatron killed Sentinel, he was still trying to convince the populace to be on his side (”trying to convince the populace” as in caring about the people rather than fighting for its own sake as established in Dark Cybertron).
I mean when I think about the fact that Megatron had the entire Senate massacred (bar a few random Senators), that’s not exactly a move that inspires confidence broadly in a population? Maybe I’m coming at it from a privileged perspective but I feel like in any given society, massacring the entire standing government is a move that WOULD appeal to radical elements (aka the people that probably already stood with Megatron), but it would definitely not inspire confidence in the Decepticons to literally anyone else. The Senate being evil or no, a rebel group that kills (or arranges to be killed) the entire standing government body isn’t exactly a group that most people would look at and go “hmm they will definitely stop killing right at this point and they will definitely not continue to use violence as a form of political action and control.”

fhfhfhdhd i forget that like....... the first time nat and quinn meet it's just like...... nat all unhinged and freaked out and covered in blood slamming quinn into a wall and pinning them there like full fangs and claws out 100% ready to kill them. and like yeah i guess is just so Completely Unnerved And Thrown Off Balance by how deadpan and nonreactive quinn is to this turn of events that he stops and doesn't just immediately tear their throat out

Ugh reminds me I was thinking the other day abt that Jason post with the one quote about like. Repeatedly biting the hand that feeds every time it heals in a desperate attempt to leave his mark Metaphorically vs. Kiana’s very real literal tendency to bite when pushed into a corner. Provoking her knowing exactly what might happen because the most severe enforcement of her own solitude looks a lot like his “love language.”

assuming they're not gonna pull a hard left turn out of nowhere again like in DD1 (tho I would really enjoy it if they did), but if they play the whole 'fated to fight the dragon' thing straight in this one I'll be a little disappointed
#saint plays dd2#spoilers#major spoilers#like I played DD1 as a teen right so while what it has to say abt character agency and the nature of choices is in current year#a fairly lukewarm take at the time it blew 14 year old me's brain out the back of my fat head#and honestly the way the actual final boss of DD1 doesn't outright break the fourth wall but leans very heavily on it#abt the inherently kinda horrific nature of the disparity between being a player character and an NPC in a video game#(ie. the pawns' situation is horrific and uncomfortable once you think about it for 2s but.....so is the situation of any NPC ever.#there is no agency beyond what they came with. there is no version of the story where the king of gransys kills the dragon.#the world/time loop stuff aside metaphysically everyone you meet is basically the same as the pawns. isn't that horrific?)#in regards to choices and agency is...idk I have a soft spot for it I still think it's an interesting and fun choice.#Your arisen in DD1 like all that came before them doesn't *have* to fight the dragon. you're given the same choice as everyone else.#if you refuse the call the game just....ends bc you stopped playing. and grigori's entire fight spent a lot of time reminding you that this#was *your* decision and no one else's. idk. I still like how DD1 starts and stays as a fairly nondescript#kill the dragon plot and then hard left turns into being abt agency and the nature of player characters so I'll be a little#disappointed if DD2 drops that bc it was fun#and now all my mutuals know why I'm so insane abt player character agency in MMOs bdvhhbjgd /jokes
