It's supposed to frost tonight so I had to pick tomatoes. Green or ripe it didn't matter they all have to come out of the garden. I filled three 5 gallon buckets with tomatoes and I sent one bucket to the neighbors. I didn't even give them a chance to beg for mercy, I just sent them over with their kids. I really hope they forgive me, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I might have to stew some of these and can them. I've already foisted garden produce off on everybody who doesn't run away when they see me and a few people who do. I'm not sick of tomatoes yet because I love tomatoes but I have a feeling I might eventually get there. I'm still not complaining though. This is a pivotal moment in the wildfood year, in my part of the world. The blackberries are blooming. This is generally accompanied by a slinght cold snap, which we call “blackberry winter”, but not a freeze. These flowers signal that wild fruit season is beginning. A time to gather and stock up on a series of abundant wild fruits and berries. . . Wild strawberries, if you can find any, are getting ripe now and over the next several days. Within two weeks, mulberries and serviceberries will be ripe. Then as those are ending, black raspberries will be getting ripe, and they will last until the blackberries are ripe. . . . After that the nuts start to ripen, first the walnuts, then acorns and hicory nuts. During acorn time the red haws and pawpaws start to get ripe, and then the persimmons. And after that it’s winter. . . . Each of those events is an opportunity to stock up on energy-rich food that can easily be preserved. And each of them is an opportunity that can easily be missed for the year if you aren’t looking at the right plants at the right time. Turkey and onion broth straight out of the canner. Made with bits that most people toss in the garbage simply because they don't know what to do with them. Or they think making something will be hard. It's not. It's so easy. It doesn't even have to be done right away. The holidays are exhausting, freeze things until you have the time and energy to deal with them. Why would I make turkey and onion broth? Because that's what I had and I don't like to waste things. I've never done it before, it was an experiment. Before I canned it I used some of this to make rice with. I highly recommend it, it's an easy swap and it adds so much flavor to rice.
