- You’re probably someone on his morning routine, or who could easily become apart of his daily routine
- Maybe a friendly barista at a café he’s curious about on the way to the his store
- But I like to think you’re someone that works at the local flower shop
- He catches you on his way to work one morning, choosing to walk that day to stretch his legs
- Apparating is convenient, but if he’s not careful he’ll get out of shape pretty fast.
- He see’s you across the street, watering the plants you keep outside the shop, talking to each of them, a smile across your face as you do
- The morning light hits you just right, the golden glow spreading across your face
- “Well aren’t they quite cute?”
- He starts walking to work everyday from then on
- It’s on the fourth or fifth day you notice him-
- Well really you notice his hair, it’s such a rich red
- A livelier shade than any rose or hibiscus you could grow
- “I bet it’s hair dye.” Your co-worker tells you “you know how these city boys are-“
- Well your store is in the heart of the city, on the Jump Street, sandwiched between a book store and a boutique
- And yeah, most of the guys around here do seem impeccably dressed,
- one of your very handsome regular's who comes in to get flowers for his husband every Tuesday even admitted he has a running bi-monthly appointment at the spa, he gets a spray tan, dye job, eyebrows tweezed, the works.
- “It’s just what I have to do to compete, there’s so many young CEO’s now, you’ve got to keep up appearances.”
- And you’re sure he’s not the only one
- Still.. you can’t help but believe that a shade of red that vibrant- that beautiful- can’t be from just hair dye
- “Maybe” you mumble, turning your attention to the peony’s
- You wonder if you’ll see him walk by at the end of the day when all the offices close
- But even though you keep your eyes glued to the store front window, he never shows up
- You see him again the next morning, walking across the street
- This time you take a little more of him in
- He’s pretty tall, though you can’t make out much of his build when he’s wearing that rust colored coat
- And a splatter of freckles across his face, almost like constellations
- He’s got a long nose, but it works with his face
- He’s pretty handsome
- What comes next shouldn’t surprise you, but it does
- Perhaps he felt your eyes on him, silently assessing him- studying him
- Because his eyes lift up to meet yours
- They’re the deepest brown you’ve ever seen, especially when the morning light hits them just so
- Oh sh*t, he caught you staring
- Sh*t. Sh*t. Sh*t. Sh*t. Sh*t. Sh*t.
- Okay, it’s fine
- Just okay- Just play it cool
- So, you pretend like you weren’t just staring at this handsome stranger admiring his features
- And shamelessly offer your best smile and a wave
- To your surprise he grins, smile spreading across his face
- A light pink dusting his face as he waves back
- And so you become waving friends
- Waving to each other every morning
- Which slowly evolves into trading morning greetings
- “How’s your morning going?” He asks from across the street
- Miffed commuters give him disgruntled looks as they walk around him rushing to work, but he stays rooted to the spot
- “It’s alright can’t complain!” You shout back from your spot by the gardenia bush, earning several looks as well
- “How about you?”
- He gives a teasing look to all the angry passerby’s and gives a “so-so” hand motion
- You almost laugh so hard you cry
- This goes on for a few more days, and your co-workers take notice
- “Flirting with the red head (Y/N)? On company time?” Your co-worker mock gasps and you roll your eyes
- “Oh hush, I’m just being friendly to a neighbor.”
- Your co-worker doesn’t look like they’re buying it, but they don’t say anything else
- It’s late in the afternoon when the shop bell rings
- You’re up to your elbows trimming and re-potting the hydrangeas
- You figure one of the others will get
- You hear some footsteps but ignore it,
- This part is tricky, if you damage any of the roots the plant might not be able to make it
- “Um excuse me, I was wondering if you might help me with something?”
- Ugh, don’t they see you’re in the middle of something
- You’re about to turn around and tell them that customers aren’t supposed to be in back room-
- When you catch a glimmer of vivid red in the corner of your eye
- No that can’t be right, he doesn’t even walk back this way in the afternoon
- Your heart stutters in your chest, face growing hot
- Your crush is getting out of control-
- When you look up, there he is
- His adorable freckles face in all its glory
- Here in the homely, rather dirty, back-plant room at your flower store
- A hesitant smile curled on to his lips
- “I’m sorry, it looks like I’m interrupting, the clerk in the front said you would be back here-“
- Of course they did
- So well what’s he here for?
- Is he here to ask you in a date??
- You might just combust from joy at the thought
- Or maybe he’s here to order a large bouquet for his lover, and the rest of your co-workers think it’s time you get yourself out of this little crush of yours
- The thought fills you with both embarrassment and despair
- Only extreme highs and lows with you, it seems
- “- I’m a business owner a few streets over, and I thought some flowers might add some atmosphere, they said you’re the expert”
- He gives you a boyish grin, his hands shoved into his pockets
- So somewhere in the middle then
- Aright you can work with that
- “Do you have an idea of what kind of flowers you might want?” You’re already moving towards the sink, washing the fertilizer off your arms.
- George blanks, he hasn’t really thought that far
- “Not particularly, do you have any recommendations?”
- You nod, lips pursed as you grab the order form
- “Well what kind of store do you have? Peonys’ and orchids’ are always good with boutiques”
- You figure he owns an upscale boutique or maybe a restaurant, those tend to be the places that do the best in this area.
- And by the looks of his taupe coat, his store is doing very well
- “Hmm well-“ his hand rubs his chin
- Technically it’s a joke shop, but it’s grown to be more than that isn’t it?
- He sells potions, charms, stationary, prank goods (of course), muggle novelty’s- it makes sense to him- but his store has grown to be quite eclectic over the years
- Besides he doubts he can explain it you
- He’s still on the fence whether you’re a muggle or from magic like him
- You’re plants have him suspicious, no way a muggle could grow a gardenia that would put Neville Longbottom to shame-
- Still, if you were a witch there’s no way you wouldn’t have recognized him by now
- The Weasleys have all become some sort of warrior clan war hero, he’s even on a chocolate frog card now.
- Well, he would rather not risk it
- He’s always been the cautious one
- “It’s sort of a hobby store? Well it started out as one, but now we’ve been expanding and we sell a bit of everything.”
- “So kind of like a department store?”
- Department stores are a bit more tricky, each room has a different vibe, but the overall tone has to be neutral
- Hmmmm
- “Maybe some white roses? Orchids might be nice too, and if you’ve got a bit of a green thumb I might recommend succulents or some devils ivy?”
- This is all going straight over George’s head, he never did pay much attention in herbology
- But you’re talking to him as if he’s an equal and he doesn’t want the cutie who works at the local flower shop think any less of him because he doesn’t know a d*mn about plants
- “Those sound lovely”
- He’s not entirely sure how it happens, but by the time he’s left he’s got an armful of plants, and a rolling order at your store to pick up plants every Tuesday
- “Are you sure you’re alright? We deliver for free you know?”
- “No no it’s fine-“
- The tall leafy plant shakes every time he shakes his head
- “Besides I wouldn’t want to miss the chance to see you again” he winks before turning to leave
- You feel your heart skip a beat
- “Did you ask if it was a dye job?” You co-worker yells from the other side of the store as soon as he’s gone
- “Of course I didn’t Ainsley! For one that’s awfully rude”
- They nod knowingly
- “Yeah that’s really fifth date talk”
- They laugh when you throw one of the cards at them
- And like clockwork George comes in every Monday afternoon, and leaves with a handful of arrangements and plants
- You still talk to each other on the street
- “How are the hydrangeas working out for you?” You ask and he gives a ‘ditto’ hand gesture
- “They’re class! I was wondering if I could get a few more?”
- You nod
- “We’ll have more ready for you on Monday, are you sure you don’t want delivery?”
- He manages to carry them off every time, but it sure makes you nervous, just one tumble and they would be ruined
- “We’ve been over this, how would I get to see you then?”
- He gives you a lopsided grin and you find yourself reflecting the expression
- “Oi! Would you two stop flirting in the middle of the street, you’re blocking traffic!” Someone shouts
- He just laughs and offers you a wave
- “What’s with all the plants?”
- They’re the first words out of Ron’s mouth when he steps inside the shop, he’s already shrugging off his coat making his way to where George is fiddling with a new contraption
- “I thought they would make the place livelier”
- False.
- He just wanted an excuse to talk to you.
- He does like the plants though. The white hydrangeas you recommended for the potions section are absolutely lovely
- Though he did use a few charms to make them larger, and stay fresher longer.
- He’s basically got a wall covered in hydrangeas now
- Still lovely though
- “It does look nice” Rob admits
- “So where are the products you need help fixing?”
- George groans waving towards a few oddly stacked boxes
- The packaging on his restock of the portable swamps came in the wrong color, not a big deal he can always change it with a spell
- But it is tedious work, especially when you have to do it one by one, otherwise it might upset the contents.
- And he does not want a swamp in his store
- Ron only nods, unpacking the box
- “You want purple right?”
- There’s a moment of silence between the two
- Purple was Fred’s favorite color
- He used to joke it was because that’s the color Snape turned when he was mad
- But George knows it’s because purple’s the color of the first fireworks they saw.
- He, Fred, Ron and Ginny had snuck away when they were younger to a muggle festival in the village, awestruck by the shapes the fireworks took.
- Fred would have carved that moment into his bones if he could.
- George clears his throat
- “Yeah, purple, same shade as the shop sign”
- Ron nods, pulling out a products wordlessly, motioning with his wand
- “So what’s really the deal with all these plant?” Ron asks, and George sighs
- “Nothing I just thought it might be good for business”
- “Did you get swindled by an attractive salesman?”
- “I wouldn’t say swindled” you gave him a pretty generous discount, and you were even offering free delivery
- That’s kind of a lot to give for a muggle shop
- “So they were attractive then?” Ron says with a grin, he’s only ribbing
- But George’s inquisitive look and the pink flush across his freckles nose makes Ron think he’s on the nose
- “(Y/N)’s fairly attractive”
- Fairly is putting it mildly though, George thinks your adorable
- Ron stutters halfway through the transfiguration spell
- “(Y/N)? Like hot (Y/N)? From the flower shop?”
- George is puzzled but nods
- “You went to hot (Y/N)‘s shop?!?!? WITHOUT ME?” Ron looks like he’s about to cry
- “How would Hermione feel is she heard you talking about another person like that?”
- Ron just gives him an incredulous look
- “She would say ‘I can’t believe George went to hot (Y/N)‘s shop and didn’t invite us’!”
- Apparently you’re quite popular in the shopping district. Your flowers have won the city award twice, before you opened your shop you won a contract as the city’s horticulturist.
- “Last Valentine’s Day Harry and I stood in line for two hours to pick up our bouquets” Ron tells him, he’s already done with the first box
- He figured business was good, it’s almost impossible to run a flower shop in the middle of the city if it isn’t.
- But he didn’t imagine you were award winning or anything
- He sighs so you are a muggle, and you’ve got no need for magic, you make up the difference in talent and skill
- He likes that, maybe he should get some shirts or art prints that say something like that
- He feels a small smile creep onto his face
- Oh well, probably for the best, he’s not sure he has time to date what with how busy things have been
- “Free for dinner? We can go wherever you want, my treat.” George says, slipping on his coat as they finish with the last of the products.
- “How about (Y/N)‘s flower shop?”
- George laughs
- “I’m pretty sure they close at 5....also they don’t have food Ron”
- Ron sighs like he’s just been told Christmas is just cancelled
- “The leaky cauldron is fine too I guess”
- But George can’t stop thinking about you for the rest of the weekend.
- It’s not really that big of a deal if you’re a muggle, but-
- Well how would that even work?
- The closest thing to a muggle he’s personally known is Hermione- who’s a witch and just muggle born
- He wouldn’t be able to tell you about being a wizard- not until you were married, or at least serious enough that he knew you both were going to get married. Which he doesn’t know how he feels about
- So he would have three full time jobs
- Taking care of the store, being your boyfriend, oh and hiding his magical powers from you
- Lovely
- But Merlin- wouldn’t his family love it if he brought you home?
- His Dad would be over the moon, and his Mum, well she’d be happy he found anyone at all. But she wouldn’t mind the pointers you gave her on how to get pinker roses.
- Percy wouldn’t really care either way. He might even like it, a muggle in the family might help his political agenda.
- Good for optics and all
- He already knows Ron likes you
- He and Hermione will be quite pleased they get to ogle you all they want at holiday dinners
- Ginny will like having another person in the family, she would personally give you a tour of the burrow
- Fleur will like having another in law in the family- and Bill will be happy that she’s happy
- Charlie would love it, asking you all about what kind of plants his dragons might like, and if you might plant a few for him, come visit in Romania- the port key’s always open for family-
- Actually he might have to watch out for Charlie, his older brother might legit steal you away from him
- .
- ...
- Fred would have loved you
- Fred would have never let it go on this long
- Fred would have seen George’s lovestruck expression the first time he saw you and said-
- “Well are you going to ask them out?”
- Fred always was the bold one, George was just following his lead most of the time.
- That fireworks thing in their last year was entirely Fred’s idea.
- George would sputter and shrug in response
- ‘I was just lookin’, a man can look can’t he?’
- Fred would have given him one of his wicked grins and said:
- “Look if you don’t ask them out now, then I will”
- And pushed him across the street, holding him to it
- And then when he was halfway across the street towards you Fred would shout:
- “And see if they’ll give us a friends and family discount for the store!”
- George is grinning just imagining it
- Fred wouldn’t have cared at all that you were a muggle.
- All he would care about is that you would make his brother, his best friend, happy.
- “Honestly George, you get hung up over the dumbest things-“ Fred would have said
- “You like them don’t you? They make you feel good about the world and life?”
- And George would just dumbly nod
- “Then that’s all that matters doesn’t it? That you care about someone, and that you can see a future with them. All that other stuff- it’s just noise”
- Alright he’ll try then
- Not just for Fred, but for himself too.
- George strolls into your shop on Monday, an hour before you open-
- “Oh hello George! You’re a little early, I’ve got your hydrangeas trimmed I just need to get your potted plants ready and-“
- “Would you like to go out sometime?”
- “-then I’ll fix up the roses for y-“
- Huh?
- You freeze for a moment, almost dropping the plant in your hands
- Did he just ask you on a date?
- “If dinner is too much, maybe just tea- or coffee?”
- Maybe it’s not exciting enough for you
- Ugh! He knew he should have suggested something more fun like the zoo or maybe a botanical garden?
- But you’re around plants all day, he didn’t want to make you think he only knows one thing-
- “Friday?”
- His eyes shoot up to look at your face, he hadn’t even noticed he was staring at his shoes
- “What?”
- “Friday” you repeat, you’ve got a smile that seems lovelier than any of the flowers you grow.
- “Is Friday good for dinner? I close up at six”
- He grins so wide he’s afraid his face might break
- “Friday is perfect”

Working at the little Florist Shop down the road close to the Leaky Cauldron was always your dream. It was so beautiful on every aspect. You were still so close to the wizarding world, could make your hobby your job and still got known to a lot of new People on a daily Basis. Could anything make it even better?
Putting on your apron you quickly slid out your wand to unlock the front door of the shop only to wait for your Co- Worker Josie and your Boss Henry to arrive just five Minutes later. Josie was a young Girl, she freshly graduated at Hogwarts and Henry was an old friendly Man who owned the Shop which he simply named after himself. Henry´s Flowers and Supplies- he got it straight on the point.
Walking behind the Checkout you went straight to the Herbology Section. This was only available for Wizards and Witches as Muggles wouldn’t want to buy dried Frog Legs anyways. Sorting all the new Ingredients you just got delivered you almost got lost of the Track of Time. Throwing away old Cardboxes, advise some Customers, taking care of the flowers growing in your small Greenhouse you could hear Henry talk to the Customers and how the Cashbox rang whenever it got opened and how Josie talked to him about the newest Gossip from her Clique.
Past Lunch as it was almost Time to restock the Flowers at the front of the Shop you still refilled the small Jars in the Herbology Section as you heard your new Co- Worker Josie run towards you.
,,Y/N, He's here. Oh, Merlin. He's here!!" Knowing exactly who she meant you instantly put the Jars down you just held.
,,No way? Which one is it?" You bowed up again and tried to spot the mysterious Quidditch Player she talked about since Months. She pointed to the Boy standing next to the Lilies. He wasn’t looking too bad, he matched her quite well.
,,Do I look okay?" She quickly asked and you couldn't help it but smile widely as you admired her beauty.
,,You look beautiful. Now go talk to him before he changes his mind!" Nodding she quickly took off her Glasses, slid them into her side pocket of her Apron and went up to the front. The brown haired Boy quickly took notice of her as he got suspiciously shy. She talked to him, showing him around the store. He asked her some Questions and they eventually got lost in Smalltalk.
,,She’s so in love with him.“ Henry sighed. ,,Oh, what I’d give to be young again and fall in love with a Quidditch Player.“ He joked as he winked and laughed only to sign me that he’d head home now. Taking over his Place at the Cashier you began to read in the book you borrowed Josie which she left here.
As another Customer came in you read the last sentence of the page only to wipe away some dirt of your cheek and welcome the new Customer with your usual Catchphrase.
,,Hey, welcome at Henry´s Flowers and Supplies. How can I-“ Looking up from the Counter where you quickly laid the Novel aside you spotted your Husband of five years standing in front of you. His black Hair was slightly wet from the rain outside and his Lips presented you a big smile. He still managed to take your Breath away.
,,Actually I just wanted to pick up an Order. But may I tell you that you look beautiful today, dear?“ Smirking he leaned against the Counter. Jokingly he decided to play games with you.
,,Well Thank you, Mr.- ? But I must warn you, don’t attempt to flirt with me.I am a married woman.“ He chuckled. ,,Plus my Husband can become very jealous.“
,,Snape, Severus Snape.“ Blushing you played along with it as he held out his hand to shake yours. ,,Your Husband must be very happy then?“
Shrugging your shoulders you pouted slightly. ,,I hope so. But whenever he’s at work I’m so lonely- I dearly miss him.“ He reached over the Table to lay his hand on your Cheek only to brush his thumb over it.
,,Hmm. I hope he buy you Flowers and treats you right?“ Chuckling you took the Novel you borrowed Josie from aside the Counter and placed it on top to show him the Title: ,All the Flowers in Paris.´
,,And every now and then he buys me my favourite Flowers: Peony´s. I´m Sorry Mr. Snape, but I’m already taken to the best Husband I could ask for.“ He removed his Hand from your face and nodded.
,,Again, what a Pity. But could you at least help me get this Order wrapped up?“ Nodding yourself now you waved him over to lead him to the Herbology Section. Grabbing everything he asked for you tried to play your role but as he finally grabbed your shoulders to turn you around your Lips finally collapsed against each other. Sighing on his Lips you laid your Arms around his neck and he held you close. How you missed him! You saw him every Weekend and could stop by at Hogwarts whenever you felt like it but it still wasn’t enough for you. Thats why the both of you leaned against one of the greenhouses walls and kissed for ages.
,,I missed you, Angel.“ He whispered. ,,Had to see you.“ Chuckling you looked him in the eyes.
,,I love you and I missed you too. You really caught me off guard.“ His Fingers brushed through your hair.
,,After I received your Owl this Morning I knew I had to see you.“ You kissed him again. ,,Also I really needed some Ingredients so it’s a Win-Win.“
He kissed your lips again. He was just like you touch starved. You felt like a Teenager again. Hiding between the Shelves, making out. You truly were a lucky Wife.
,,Y/N! Who was that Man flirting with- Oh my God!“ Josie walking right at you. You let go of Severus. ,,Oh- shit- I´m sorry.“ She swallowed a lump in her Throat and just looked at you with big eyes. Smiling you tried to hide your Blush.
,,Well, uhh- that’s Severus. My Husband.“ You introduced, trying to hold back your laughter as her eyes almost seem to leave her head out of Shock.
,,Professor Snape- Of course- um- hi?“ He just waved and you both watched her hurry away as she was excusing herself with left over work.
,,I bet she wasn’t expecting that.“ He joked and pulled you back closer to him.
,,Of course not. Who’d expect their former Potions Master to kiss their Co-Worker between the Shelves? Especially when she didn’t knew that we are married.“
,,I once spotted Hagrid and Madame Maxime kissing after the Yule Ball, that wasn’t fun either. She will surely survive it.“
,,It simply shocks your Students every time. Now shut up and kiss me.“ You demanded laughing.

Betty Cooper + Teen Witch please!
Anon, this has taken me an embarrassingly long time, but here we are:
Betty Cooper bit her lip as the figures in the house across from her leaned towards each other, their flirting as clear as any neon sign. This wasn’t how she was supposed to spend her sixteenth birthday. She was supposed to be the one in that room, laughing and flirting with Archie, all the while waiting for him to kiss her. Instead, she was sitting alone in her dark room and wistfully thinking about the boy who didn’t want her.
Polly had warned her that love spells didn’t work, but Betty made sure she hadn’t used a love spell. She’d used a persuasion charm and a dream potion, both meant to make Archie see what they could be, if only he’d give it a chance. Except, instead of noticing Betty, his lifelong best friend, the one who’d been there for him through his thick head and her thin patience, Archie had fallen for Veronica Lodge, the rich socialite who’s every move was infused with sophistication and seduction.
With a groan Betty threw herself back onto her bed. She picked up a pillow and covered her head to scream in frustration. Frustration that she hadn’t proved she was a real witch like Polly and their mother; frustration that she’d failed at becoming the one thing she’d always wanted, Archie’s girlfriend, before her birthday; and worst of all, frustration that she didn’t even know if she wanted to him anymore.
A knock came from the window and Betty ignored it. Probably just another one of Polly’s suitors, clamoring for her attention despite her heart already belonging to another. Pretty, perfect Polly. The all-American girl next door. Perfect grades, perfect hair, and perfect spell work. Though Betty still adored her older sister, it was annoying how easily things came to Polly and Chic. Both slipped gracefully into the realm of popularity, neither breaking a sweat in their pursuit of adulthood. Chic was the captain of the football team and the editor of The Blue & Gold when he was a sophomore on top of his laundry list of extracurriculars. And Polly had naturally become the co-head of the J.V. Cheer squad, organized a coat drive for the homeless, chaired the dance committee, and successfully protested for adoption of organic, cruelty free lunches by the time her freshman finals had come around.
All Betty had managed during her two years at Riverdale High was maintain the moniker ‘Queen of the Nerds’ for pacing Dilton Doiley in rank and get politely rejected for all extracurriculars except for the school paper (and even then she’d only been allowed in as a legacy recruit). Her turn in shop had ended just as quickly when the older boys found out she could clean a carburetor and fix a flat quicker than any of them cared to try. Heck, even the marching band, always ravenous for new blood, kicked her out after she’d staged a one-woman protest over the sexist and archaic twirler uniforms were. (Upon further reflection, brought upon by a long weekend detention for interrupting the Homecoming performance, Betty realized her expulsion from the wind section might have more to do with her protestations about the choice of music for that year. Classic Horror Reimagined might have been all well and good for NYSFBC competitions, but she hadn’t been able to find it in herself to not speak up about the music choices from The Reflecting and Cardamom’s Baby, both directed by, and paying royalties to, truly awful directors. It seemed Riverdale’s band director was not ready for a more enlightened view of women in film and thus Betty had been regulated to spending the rest of the semester in study hall.)
The knock came again and Betty rolled over. Let Polly’s beaus wait. It was as if they cared about Betty’s birthday, so why should she care about their heartache?
“Betts,” came a muffled voice. “Let me in, will you? I’m about to fall off this ladder.”
At the sound of her name, she sat up and peered out the window. The top of Jughead’s grey beanie, a sight for sore eyes at all times, but especially now, stared back at her. Betty rushed to the window and opened it. Jughead shoved a greasy Pop’s bag and cup towards her.
“What are you doing here?” she asked as he pulled himself through the window.
He shrugged and turned on the table lamp by her bed. The soft, warm glow cast long shadows through the room, its reflection against the window blocking Archie and Veronica from her view. Jughead jerked his head towards the Andrews’ house and sat down on the window seat.
“Archie had plans tonight, and you’d mentioned your parents had a thing. So.” Jughead gestured towards the bag in her hands. “I probably should have brought a slice of pie or cake or something.”
Her heart fluttered into her throat and if it weren’t for the melted milkshake in her hand, Betty would have thrown her arms around him. And, maybe, if she thought a little less and acted a little more, she might have even tried to kiss him. He shifted in the seat and stared around the room as if it were the first time he’d been there. A ridiculous thought considering how many times he’d climbed through her window since they were old enough to know what a ladder was. Despite his familiarity with the room, Betty felt a surprising, sudden urge to hide all her stuffed animals and childhood trinkets under the bed.
Instead, she cleared her throat.
“This is perfect, Jug. But what about you? Won’t you be hungry?”
He grinned, that sheepish, boyish charm of his that lit up his sleepy face. Her heart thumped painfully at the sight of it. Not for the first time, Betty wondered why she’d never noticed just how nice of a smile he had?
“I ate mine on the way over. And I might have stolen a few onion rings.”
“There’s that famous Jones’ appetite,” Betty laughed.
She sat down on the floor and pulled the paper container of onion rings out. When he didn’t move from the window, Betty patted the carpet next to her in invitation. Jughead stood slowly, his movements jerky and uncertain. Whether he was wary of her, or of the chance that Archie might see them together, was unknown. But when she pick up the milkshake, now nothing more than thick strawberry milk, his eyes flicked to her lips then ran away to stare at the pastel pink wallpaper.
“How’s the witchcraft going? Turn anybody into frogs lately?”
Betty shrugged and picked at an onion ring. Jughead had been the only one she’d told about her heritage. Despite his inherent skepticism, he was the only one she felt she could trust.
“Slowly. Mom wants me to memorize the basics first, but Polly’s been showing me a few things.”
Ever the skeptic in need of tangible proof, Jughead raised an eye in challenge. Betty shot him a grin and pulled the burger out of the bag. While she unwrapped it her lips moved wordlessly, the strange form of the spell coming to the front of her mind. As they watched, steam rose from the burger as it slowly heated. Jughead let out a low whistle and clapped. Glib as it might have been, his approval was enough to draw a grin.
“Finally, useful voodoo.”
Betty rolled her eyes and let out a huff. She knew he was pushing her buttons, a childish attempt to draw her attention, but it had become a sort of game between them.
“Vodun is a religion, Juggie, and not at all like -“
She paused as a loud whistling cut through the air. With a puff of air, the burger exploded, sending pieces of rye bread and vegetables all through the room.
“More practice, maybe?” Jughead said softly.
Betty worried at her lips, her mind racing to figure out what had gone so wrong. She’d brought the words to her mind, and focused on shifting her power into them, and then…. did she close off the spell? Or did she get so distracted by -
Her mind stalled as Jughead reached towards her. Gently, he pulled something out of her hair and popped it into his mouth. A few seconds too late, Betty realized it was a tomato.
“What?” he said at her wince. “Can’t waste good food. What about your other project? The one that doesn’t involve exploding burgers?”
Betty groaned and leaned back to lay down on the (thankfully still clean) carpet. “You mean The Archie Project.”
Jughead nodded. He moved a few pieces of bread out of the way, tossing those into the bag, and lay down next to her.
“I’d name it Operation Ginger Theft, or Lonely Hearts Prevail. The Archie Project sounds like some lame make-over reality show Kevin and Veronica are always going on about.”
Betty snorted at the image of a swarm of stylists descending upon Riverdale, intent on cleaning up the jocks. “Or maybe Archie’s the one who gives you a make over.”
Jughead faked a shudder and she giggled. “Armed with Hamburgercrombie & Fritch, way too much hair gel, and a daily bath in Old Sugar? Hard pass.”
“You’re willing to give up the chance of a life time to let him and his talented team of bros -“
“Reggie and Moose?” he asked.
“Naturally. And they come fully equipped to dudify -“
“Dudify?”
“Well, what else would you call it?”
Jughead thought about it while he stared at a piece of cheese on the ceiling. Betty stared at him, transfixed on just how clear his skin seemed. The realization that she’d never been this close to him, that he’d probably never let anyone come this close to him who wasn’t related to him, was grounding. Skin like that had to be a miracle considering how much junk food he ate. Not a single blemish to be seen. Pity, too, that his eyelashes were that long and thick. They covered up just how blue eyes were when he had them half-closed all the time. No wonder Ethel spent middle school writing sonnets about -
“Masculinize? Toxify? Fraternize?” he asked, his drawl drawing her out of her trancelike observations.
“Maybe,” she said softly.
He turned towards her and his eyes met hers. The stare between them went on far too long to be a look between friends. Especially when his eyes flicked down to her lips and she couldn’t help but draw the tip of her tongue along her bottom lip. Jughead cleared his throat, his eyes darting back to the ceiling.
“I should have brought a cake.”
Betty sighed heavily at the reminder. “At least you remembered it was today.”
Jughead pushed himself up on his elbow, confusion littered across his face. “What do you mean?”
Not wanting to fall back into that particular pit of self-pity, she shrugged. “Forget about it. And as for The Archie Project -“
“Coming soon on RBC,” he deadpanned. Despite the humor, Betty knew him well enough to note the tension in his jaw.
“I think I’m giving up on him.”
Jughead’s eyes went wide and he stared at her.
“Why?”
“It turns out Archie wasn’t really who I wanted.”
Betty chewed the inside of her mouth. His half-lidded eyes were normally hard to read, but his sudden interest held intriguing lines of mystery. She waited, as she always had, on Jughead. He’d always been last to everything; the last to class, the last to wake, the last to notice when the winds of romance were changing. Only this time, Betty hoped that for the first time, she’d been the last.
He swallowed, hard enough to be heard in the dark, quiet room.
“Then who -“
Betty raised up on her arm and leaned forward slowly as if not to spook him. She met his eyes and, finding the same heat that she felt, met his lips with her own.

Summary: He could see nothing from his left eye but there was no pain, there was no adjustment to be made because it felt like he had been like that his whole life. In the middle. A/N: Holy stars. I did it. Okay Pardon me for taking so long, I realized it was going to be pretty long and I would have never been able to write it in less than a month. « I believe we reached your destination, sir. »
« I suppose so. »
A young man stood beside the gate of a manor, which was glimmering under the blinding sunlight of a Friday morning.
Baroque keys were placed in his hands while his eyes scanned the vividly emerald gardens that looked like real crystals, and contrasted the obsidian exterior of the manor. The building, decorated with gothic features, dominated the area and stood imposing.
The dark of the night would have made the sight … eerie, for sure. The sound of the carriage taking off brought him back to his senses, he turned to raise his arm in a greeting motion.
« Take care, sir … » he couldn’t hear his name over the rumor of horses’ hooves.
His hands moved swiftly over the lock, as if he had done the same motion daily over the years, one of those things you learnt to do with your eyes closed.
With a twist, the gate was open and he followed the rocky path towards the door. His short boots touched the ground in a consistent but not loud one-two, one-two pace.
Bronze plaques and other decorations beautified the entrance; the handle, picturing a lion’s head as the banality of that age’s symbolism wanted, made the young man smirk.
« How pompous. » he mused, and wondered what kind of high power once ruled over the land. A forgotten one perhaps?
With a twist of the handle to the right and some pulling toward himself, the man was surely not ready for the wondrous sight laid out in front of his eyes.
Not only the rooms were immensely spacious, but the expensive-looking furniture, the flooring and ornaments inside together with the perfect usage of dark and light spaces, made it seem like the world and nature around it existed in function to the manor itself. As if that space had always been meant to stand for that building alone.
The heels of his boots clinked against the marble pavement, his fingertips traced invisible discontinuous lines on the voile and velvet curtains he had started to open up.
He smiled as the house started to come to life.
Exploring new spaces often had this cathartic effect on him, as if he’d locked himself in a quiet small room and he had been in need of fresh air.
And when he stepped into a room, in the far back of the house, with dark curtains covering the entrance, when he heard the slight change of sound in his steps, that was when he allowed himself to look down from the garlands hanged on the walls.
Pulling odd familiarity. It was what he felt, what he was finally aware of sensing as soon as his honey-colored irises set their glare upon the pavement.
Tiny tiles of black, orange and white were the background and a frame for a yellowish skeletal figure, seemingly facing the earth. They were giving their back to the man, venturing in the void in front of themselves.
So he smiled. The pulling energy made him slowly move closer to the mosaic, lowering himself on his knees right next to it. His hand seemed to be moving with a mind of its own, hovering over the air right above the depicted skeleton.
Lower.
Lower.
He touched it and, as expected, nothing happened, except for amusement to wash over him.
Of course, what was he thinking? His fate wasn’t going to be like that, at least for a long while.
That wasn’t how beings like him ended up, trapped in a wooden box six feet under the ground. Most times, they were burned alive through howling screams of inhuman pain.
His smile faded and found himself lying next to the figure, his back on the uncomfortable tiles that dug into his skin.
Sure, he could have focused on the beautiful chandelier on the ceiling, the candles still extinguished from years of neglect.
Instead, his mind traveled toward mysterious paths and his hand went from the mosaic to his upper lip, narrowing his eyes and zoning out.
The tip of his tongue went over his upper teeth, causing his lips to part ever so slightly.
With the same hand now raised above his head, a sunray allowed itself to let his yellow glove glow into its presence. He took it off and his white skin shined along with the black of his nails.
People would have thought he’d have it burned off in a matter of seconds.
Legends were curiously foolish.
The man stood up in an agile movement, leaving the skeletal figure behind the same way the idea of death disappeared from his destiny when he had become a vampire.
« Let’s go get some sunburn. » he joked.
It was extremely painful, seeing how the gardens were practically bared of any kind of plant, the wild flowers that hadn’t yet died already wilting under the weight of their stem.
There was a saying back in his town. “Looking high and looking low”, a reminder of being aware of your surroundings in every situation.
Now, our marquis swore he had been careful.
At least, until the moment in which he only looked up at a cloud right above him, ignoring the acuminated object that he was about to step onto.
He could only face the ground before he shut his eyes in a flash and a metal object gripped half of his face, digging into his skin with a merciless push.
To that, the man contrasted a frantic pulling, removing the object as he felt a liquid substance leave his insides and spread all over his hands and face both.
If it hadn’t been for his pretty decent strength, he would’ve probably taken much longer to take it off. Then again, a human being would have been dead by then.
That wasn’t an option for him.
He clutched his face with his left hand, trembling with shots of pain, that traveled through his entire body.
Eyes squeezed shut, he stumbled in the dark and fell to his knees, seething with every doleful scream that escaped his lips wide apart.
He was hunched over himself, the sun rays hitting his exposed skin felt like violent poles through his neck, as he forced down his left arm and lowered it on his legs.
His non-injured eye tentatively opened to be met with nothing more than the contrast between his black clothes and his lavished white skin.
And …
he got blinded by something flickering on his palm. Did some of the rocks end up on his arm?
The unnamed man went for another try, shielding his eye with his free hand.
Gold.
His vision was dark and red with suffering, but all he could see was gold.
He bit hard at his lower lip, breaking it apart just enough to feel more of that same fluid flowing down. He raised his finger and wiped off some of it.
Again, gold.
His mind raced and, as he fell to the ground, blacking out of exhaustion, he came to a single conclusion.
“Royal blood.”

And just like that, he was awake. The light was … dimmed. Not because grand part of the day had passed, but he felt like he was in the shade.
Well, that would have certainly helped prevent him from getting sunburnt, in the least.
Hold on a moment. Why was he lying face first in the middle of the garden?
« It’s him. » whispers came from around him, he turned his head and was met with three curious children faces.
Curiosity that soon turned into horror. Disgust.
Two children backed away and ran, like two dashing bolts of lightning, deep into the forest that separated him from the inhabited part of town.
One, though, was still staring at him.
He stared back, narrowing his eyes, confused by their reaction, the shadows that he thought he could see with his left eye – which had yet to focus on the scene – and the fact that he had barely woke from his … what? It wasn’t like he had decided to drop down and take a nap just like that.
« I know there’s someone that can help with that. » the kid in purple simple robes spoke softly, but with the typical high pitched voice of an eight-year-old.
Why wasn’t he able to see clearly from both of his eyes?
« Help? » he hoped they didn’t find out about him so quickly.
« Yes. » the boy had his hands wrapped around the gate bars, his face in between them. « For your scar and your eye. »
Everything came back to him at once, like a kick right to his teeth.
The hit, the pain, the screams.
The golden blood.
His hand went to his cheek and, even through his gloves, he could perceive the uneven section of his skin, as if someone had clawed it away. The left eye could only see shadows of the outside world.
Around him, as inexplicable as it sounds, bushes full of flowers had appeared on the grass where the blood had touched it.
So not only he was a vampire.
« Go away. »
But he now would have to also endure be called a monster.
« Now. » the urgency in his voice matched the harshness in his eyes.
The boy gave him one last glance, visibly more intimidated than earlier, and slowly walked away. He made sure to leave a certain piece of paper on the ground, though. Not because he wanted to litter, of course, the kid had manners!
It was just … in case the man needed him.
And he knew the man wouldn’t have lasted, as everything was going according to plan; before we may carry on with the marquis’ fate, we need to first introduce him.
His name was Remus, and he was a prince.
Hah.
Who are we kidding?
The name was Remus and he held the title of the most unfortunate soul of the kingdom he had wanted to forget the name of for about … as long as he’s had a conscience.
Still not convinced?
Let me tempt you to change your mind by starting from the beginning.
Remus was a duke and it was high time that he dropped in our story. Now, be mindful that we said was and not is.
The town he now lived in was once the Dukedom of Amnemoneo, which may sound familiar for our sharpest readers who were careful of our beginning statement.
Even for them, though, we need to go back to a couple of years earlier, when laws weren’t discarded and superstitions were stronger than a man’s own reason.
1839 was the rampant year of the estimated birth of the prince of Ameleia, an event which was awaited by all the people with profound trepidation: the face of the future ruler had always been a privilege for the world to see as soon as the opportunity presented itself.
What they didn’t know, though, was that they would have been blessed actually by two princes that year. What was wrong with that?
They were twins.
In the kingdom of Ameleia, during that particular age of radical puritanism, having twins was the equivalent of selling your soul to evil external forces of hell.
The thought of the good and evil twin, the angel and the literal Antichrist, it was so deep-rooted in the souls of the people that, despite the royalty’s awareness of how fake those beliefs were, the two brothers were forced to separate.
One destined to be a prince, the other to be the duke of an inconsequential land of the kingdom.
The good and the evil.
Only that, the dukedom wasn’t exactly … standing out in any field. Misery had started to pour down on its citizens which led to, eventually, fall into the pit of seemingly non-existent lands that the kingdom had forgotten about.
The sovereigns had also tried to forget Remus.
Judging by how often they made sure he was still alive, which was zero times since they parted ways as he was still a child to be raised by servants in the dukedom’s manor, they had probably made it, too.
So, just like that, when misery had devastated the town so much that any existent title fell and Remus found himself at sixteen locked out of his manor behind the woods, the servants declared their retirement to major families and parted ways with him once and for all. But most of all, he felt the utmost loneliness.
People in town didn’t know much about him, he was aware of his condition, but had always been refrained from talking about it with anyone other than the servants in the building he hardly ever left.
Until one day, around his- their eighteenth birthday.
He had tried his best to survive in the oblivion of poverty, he lived in an abandoned shop; Remus wasn’t exactly aware of how many rats he had crossed paths with while stumbling around the tiny rooms. Not to mention the cats that, seldom, decided to invade his vital space and scare him out of his life when they woke him up by hopping on his chest.
He should have considered windows, had there been any shop of that kind in town.
Don’t even get the people started on food, the subject that made the worst come out of them.
He had tried to go out in a moment that wasn’t the dark of the night. It didn’t exactly go as he had wished.
In front of him, two imposing royal guards blocked his way out of the door. Their faces edgy, expressions hard and eyes dull. It took him a moment to recognize them. Were they going to take him back? After all those years of neglect?
He flinched as both the men unsheathed their swords at him.
« Woah, nice to see you again, too. »
« Silence! » now who were they to behave like that in front of a person of such importance?
« Excuse me? Alright, I might look raveled but a couple of years rotting would do that to anyone. Even a prince like m- »
« Silence. » another repeated.
And hit Remus in the stomach with the hilt of his sword-
The boy contorted with pain with a hand on his stomach and the other on the ground, to alleviate his fall.
His mind raced trying to give himself a reason for their attitude. Two soldiers in disguise? Had he done something illegal? Did they mistake him for someone else?
His ears were ringing, but the only thing he actually heard was his mind going why, why, why, why?
« The royalty is coming. »
Remus regained that tiny bit of strength to look up at them and spoke with a broken voice. « Y-You mean my parents? »
A kick came to his face and he decided against speaking any further.
« Prince Roman is going to visit the Royal Manor, too. »
Oh, and who exactly cared? Just another name in the “people that turned their back on you their whole life��� list.
Why was he bothering to show up after eighteen years?
« And you, » the taller guard leaned down, spitting out his words. « Won’t be allowed out of this place until he leaves. Clear? »
Remus could only eye him from the ground he had been trying to get up from. « Crystal. » he muttered, without missing his sarcastic tone as the two men left.
So his parents were embarrassed of him to the point of not showing up in his presence? Big deal. Who cared?
He ended up spending a week of almost literal imprisonment before he was let out.
There was no living soul able to tell how he managed to survive. The boredom, though, had brought him to actually clean the place around for once and find out about its origins.
It happened when a singular book stood out of a shelf, as if eager to be picked up. Remus did as it desired. Pages flipped in front of his eyes before he had been able to touch a single scrap of paper and he was directed to a particular segment of a paragraph which seemed to be handwritten years earlier, before the former owner left the place.
Magic antiques were the only readable words.
After some looking around – and a myriad of unrecognizable unknown objects inside cabinets – he decided he was going to get to the bottom of it.
Thus the years spent into mastering the Art of Transfiguration all the bookshelves of the abandoned shop seemed to offer.
Of course, mistakes happened almost constantly at first, especially the permanent one that turned a streak of his hair white: he had been trying to recite a formula to turn one of the rats into an inanimate object.
He ended up transforming himself into a white animal, but that was beyond the point and he wasn’t going to bring that up to anyone. He’d have preferred to fake a heart wrenching and tragic backstory.
And, well, when he heard of the northern man coming to town on the same period of time as Roman used to yearly come back for some reason, when Remus learnt to automatically lock himself in his shop, an idea dawned on him.
And with it, he was sure he was going to get his Manor back.
That was the reason why, when he saw a boy in purple robes walking with a couple of kids in the deserted streets, mumbling about the gossip going around on the newcomer, he carefully approached with a piece of paper in his hand.
« Hello there, children. » he crouched down at their eye level. « Do you want to know a secret about him? »
And children? Well, they were far too gullible. What was even better about it was when fate was on your side; fate that, in that moment, had the name of a certain metallic trap he had left in the middle of the manor’s garden he hadn’t seen in years.
Everything was falling into place.

Just like Roman thought earlier that day as both he and the newcomer had just arrived in town.
He had been walking around towards a lesser known path he used to take to reach a certain family’s residence.
That was when Roman saw him, standing next to an open carriage led by a pair of black horses that seemed to sternly stare him down.
He was … odd. Unlikely to be common part of the citizens, the man stood out compared to the commoners roaming in the streets and he was unable to tear his eyes off of him.
Unknown, however, kept his back facing the prince, as he helped the coachman heave up a bag on the carriage. He moved with delicacy even while stretching his muscles.
Roman wondered for a moment if he were living some kind of lucid dream.
Since there was no way for him to turn his head 360°, he forced himself to keep his gaze straight ahead and forget about that crystalline laughter he just so happened to overhear while walking on to other side of the road.
And, oh, what a particularly handsome look he portrayed with his features and-
Right, the household.
Blood that just overflowed left his cheeks and he crossed the hidden path: it was pretty weird how none, apart from the family he was about to visit, in that town seemed to recognize him. Still, his parents were always eager to remind him to let himself be seen the less he could, ever since he had decided to travel to Amnemoneo alone.
« Ro-bro! »
Roman’s head snapped up and a huge smile automatically spread on his lips, recognizing whose voice it was in an instant. He was only able to see a flash of purple running towards him as tiny arms were lacing around his waist.
A kid’s face looked up at him, big lilac eyes boring into his own.« You’re back! »
« Of course I am, Vivi. »
« I told you not to call me that. » the kid whined, frowning at him and loosening a bit of his embrace.
« Alright, alright, as you wish, my lord. » Roman lowered only to pick him up from under his shoulders.
« That’s a better title. » no ten-year-old should have been able to have that kind of sarcasm.
Roman scoffed. « I should tell Logan and Patton to stop spoiling you. »
« Falsehood! »
The prince couldn’t help but laugh as the kid mimicked his father, failing in sounding as serious as him. Roman held his hand out to the boy.
« Come on Virgil, let’s go in. »

He loved visiting his friends. When he surpassed the limit between the street and the gate of their property, a welcoming warmth washed over him and he felt at home, like he’d always belonged there, a mystical comfort that eased up whatever worries concerned him.
Patton was to blame for picking up a few tricks from his wizard husband, for sure.
Roman knocked on the door and it didn’t take long for Patton’s arms to be wrapped around him with a gasp.
« Woah, hey buddy. » the prince stumbled backwards before releasing his friend.
« We sensed you were coming. » Patton confessed, pointing behind himself where Logan was standing, smiling and waving a hand in their direction.
Roman waved back, amused. « I literally can’t hide anything from you, can I? »
They invited him, basically being pushed and pulled by both Virgil and Patton, excitedly, towards a certain cake they all helped to make (especially Virgil for the little precise decorations.) in honor of his birthday.
Everything in their home sparked a magical energy: Logan had always been a mage in the shadows, careful not to be discovered thanks to his profession as biologist and doctor, in some way. After Patton made his way into his life, magic started being part of him, too. The barrier around their home was his doing, it kept away people with malevolent intentions and let the other ones be welcomed in a soft invisible embrace.
As for Virgil … they didn’t really talk about that. Roman knew something about a scientific experiment and a reject they found. He knew they had saved him and given him a life. But the kid wasn’t ready to know the truth yet, so it wasn’t a topic to bring up.
« Oh, speaking of which. » Logan lowered the cup he was bringing to his lips. « Did you hear of the marquis moving to town today? »
Roman snapped back to reality. « He’s a marquis? »
« You saw him?! » Virgil leaned forward with wide eyes and curiosity written all over his face.
All gazes were set on him. « Well, I believe I might have seen him before coming here. » the memory of the man’s figure flashed in his mind. « He didn’t look like he was from town. » Roman didn’t mention his other considerations.
« Are you going to marry him? »
Children and their perfectly embarrassing questions. But there was definitely nothing awkward about it, was there? He didn’t even know the man.
« Calm down, Vi, that’s not how it works. » Logan softly pushed him back against his seat to sit up straight.
« But he has a title, like Ro-bro. Isn’t it logical? »
He smiled. « Well- »
« You have to admit, » Patton chimed in, repressing a giggle. « Virgil has a point. »
Virgil turned to Logan with a toothy grin, a silent “see?” was understood between the two of them.
« Why don’t you ask Roman about it? »
« Yes. » the prince admitted with a defeated sigh. « I was planning on bringing him here to announce our engagement but you had to ruin that! » he faked an accusing tone.
« That’s what you get for betraying me! You said you were going to make me a prince. » Virgil pouted and Roman really had to stop himself from pinching his cheeks.
He stood up and approached him, crouching down next to his seat. « Let me tell you a secret. » he began stage whispering. « I can still do that, when I am king, you can become my prince son! Come with me and run away from these two oldies. »
A chorus of “excuse you?” followed with the other two’s laughter.
As hours flew by and Virgil left to play with some friends, Roman found himself back at the front door, which was being held for him.
« Are you sure you don’t want to stay and eat something? » Patton searched the prince’s face with instinctual concern.
« You know it’s not a problem for us to conjure a seat for you. Or anything else, if you desire to stay. » added Logan, with a tone softer than usual.
Roman had always found endearing how protective they were of him: before they settled in Amnemoneo, they used to meet each other quite often. Logan and Patton seemed to be on every path Roman had to cross and, eventually, they grew attached to each other.
Then again, the prince visited their town every year around his birthday, in a sort of tradition, to have a little theatrical representation in his honor.
Only that he had to be given permission to occupy the manor, so …
« I must go to the town hall, to check the availability of the building, same old required formalities. » Roman half-smiled. « Thank you, regardless. »
And exchanging goodbyes, off he was, unaware of the fact that he had to make yet another trip to the building which was occupied by our beloved marquis.

A beloved marquis who had left that same building a couple of hours earlier than when the prince had gone to the town hall.
He was … defeated. So, he surrendered to the will of persuasion and picked up the piece of paper left at the gates by the purple clothed kid.
A visiting card?
Looking like this, it was unlikely for him to show himself with the sun still shining up above in the surprisingly limpid sky. It would have rendered his scarred face just as clear to the ones roaming mindlessly in town.
For some reason, most of the population seemed to aimlessly wander about all the time, in a state of daze.
Was anybody actually going to notice his presence at all?
As if pulled by an outer force that had already made up his mind, the man crumpled up the paper card in his hand he clutched to his chest and moved through the forest like it was his second home.
He dragged his feet between the crunch of autumn leaves and the damp grass still suffering from the rain of the day before. His fingertip brushed the injured side of his face a second time.
And he felt nothing.
He could see nothing from his left eye but there was no pain, there was no adjustment to be made because it felt like he had been like that his whole life. In the middle. Between pain and numbness, recovery and illness, sight and blindness.
Life and death, light and dark.
Because of his condition, all that he was, also wasn’t.
So when he hurt himself to the point of almost mortally wounding himself, he also didn’t. The bleeding stopped in no time and the injury only left an ugly mark.
But, of course, on top of that, he had to discover he had golden blood. Royal blood, which meant not only sharper senses and abilities than average of his kind, but also an overly deadly power roaming in his insides.
Maybe that was why, years earlier, that old woman inexplicably died the day after she wiped his face clear of tears and offered him shelter. One of the many places he had to run away from.
The marquis had no time to ponder about his condition, as his feet stopped right in front of the entrance of his destination.
« Well, well, well, what have we here. »
He looked to his left and saw a man hanging upside down from the opened window, looking amused in his direction.
« I didn’t expect you so soon. You didn’t leave me time to make myself presentable! »
In all honesty, he had to agree. That other man looked … absolutely disheveled, as if he had dressed in the dark and hadn’t looked in a mirror for a lifetime.
Not that most of the citizens here didn’t send the same aura.
He looked down to the visiting card. « You’re Remus? »
« The one, » he began, moving swiftly from the window to the door he opened right after, stepping aside to let the man see the desert inside. « And lonely. » he theatrically bowed.
The marquis was then pulled in by Remus, who shut the door behind them and led them to a counter at the centre of the modest room.
« Now, let’s see. » he flipped through the pages of an enormous tome. « A curious spell for our particular vampire. »
The man’s eyes widened in shock.
« Wh- » he was met with a smirk. « How- » the marquis backed away, the utmost fright rising in his chest. His back touched the shelf against the wall.
« Aw, now, fear not, my dear foreigner. » Remus let the door open with a swift movement of his wrist. « You can leave, if you so desire. »
The newcomer eyed him warily. There was no way that wasn’t a trap.
Remus tilted his head and contorted his mouth. « You don’t want to? Fine with me. »
« Wait. »
« I’ll make you leave … as a newer person than how you entered! »
The marquis’ eyes were blinded by a flashing light that seemed to have completely devoured him.
He felt his body shrink, twist and contort under the weight of a thousand formulas that were operating on his form.
A thundering headache caught his forehead and he curled on himself until he couldn’t feel his limbs anymore, his eyes squeezed shut.
When he was able to open them again, he recognized exactly in what condition he ended up.
Remus had turned him into a bat.
But wait, he was already able to do that, what was the usefulness behind that?
He tried to get back to his human body.
And tried.
And tried again.
Nothing happened.
Dear god.
« Hope you enjoy your whole new life, special costumer, and remember, » Remus managed to drive the bat out of his shop. « No take-backs! » he slammed the door shut.
And the marquis flew away frantically for his life, which was probably going to change forever.
Only that he didn’t know it was because the encounter he was about to have at the manor.

Gosh, that was inconvenient!
Roman played with the lock at the gates, going over the bass-relief decorated on top. The consistency of the material noted that a very long time had passed since someone had inhabited the place. Yet, now there seemed to be someone?
Waiting for them was the right thing to do and not totally creepy, right?
Ri-?
Like a flock of ravens storming away in the morning from the local farmer’s terrain, Roman heard an erratic drumming of wings toward his general direction and ducked whatever was coming down at him.
There was a thud and a screech before the prince was able to spot a barely moving bat lying painfully on the ground.
« Oh. » Roman stood in his place for a few seconds. « Oh, dear. » he crouched down next to the animal, which appeared to be a diurnal bat.
Perhaps it had gotten lost?
« Hey, little one- woah! » it tried to move, as if in fear of his presence, when Roman’s hand motioned toward its body.
He examined it to look for a way to heave it up and his eyes fell on the left wing. The broken tissue was tangled in a leaf on the ground.
« Oh, you poor thing! » there had always been this complex but profound understanding when it came to animals: he felt like they had some kind of connection with him.
As he leaned over the bat, he could almost feel its pain. He had to help.
Roman tried to pacify it by speaking softly, while he attentively eased it in his hands. He had a single place in mind.
« No panic, little friend. » he whispered, mostly to himself, biding his farewell to the manor and the unseen marquis behind himself. « We’re going to get you all better in no time. »
He had to find Logan again.

« Did you change your mind? » Patton abruptly cut off as Roman stormed into his and Logan’s home for the second time that day.
« I require a hand. » the prince announced, approaching Logan who had been eyeing him since he entered the room. « A scientific one, if that’s possible. » Roman added, showing the animal cupped in his hands.
The bat tried to stretch both wings, failing miserably.
« That’s odd. »
« Huh? »
Logan searched for something specific none but him could name. « This is an adult bat and yet he seems to not have adjusted to his body entirely. » without taking his eyes off the creature, he moved them both towards the table Logan used for his experiments and works. « Furthermore, there’s no such thing as bat hunting here. And yet it looks like something might have scared him. Plus, there are no bats around here. »
The animal was laid on a piece of cloth on the table’s surface and the doctor started taking his tools out.
A pair of curious eyes stared from the other side of the room.
« Do you want to assist, Virgil? » Logan looked at him with the corner of his eyes, offering him a smile. The kid beamed and rushed to his side, while Roman observed their work from the other side of the table, Patton joining them shortly after.
« Be careful, please. » Roman stared in anticipation at the bat, as if expecting to feel pain in an empathetic sort of link.
Logan stopped and glanced at him through his glasses, a grin on his lips. « You still emotional over animals? »
« Shut your mouth and do your magical science. »
Though he was baffled at the oxymoron, Logan complied regardless, with Virgil handing him what he needed at his side.
It didn’t take long before Patton and Virgil were the only ones left in the room to tend to the creature as the other two discussed the happening over coffee.
« Could you imagine if he could talk? » the kid abruptly turned to his father. « He would tell us what he was escaping from. »
Patton made a humming sound, considering the idea. « Well, there might be a way. » he conceded, opening a small notebook and flipping through the pages. When he found the right spell, he turned to look at his son.
« Just for a couple of minutes, okay? » a mischievous but child-like smile formed on Virgil’s lips, satisfied.
That one was the exact moment in which all of our stories converged.
With Patton’s magic flickering in the room and toiling with the chains of the incommunicability between two beings that don’t talk the same language.
« Hey, Mr. Bat, you can talk now! »
« Oh, can I? » a sarcastic satin voice broke the anticipation. « Wait. Was that me? » the marquis’ day was already so weird, that might as well have happened too.
« This is so cool! It worked! » Virgil leaned enthusiastically over the animal, which was questioning the insanity of his earlier choice. Not that he could do much else.
« What worked? » Logan’s voice sounded hurried across the room.
« Oops. »
Patton revealed a sly smile to his husband, pretending they did nothing big like giving a previously non sentient creature the ability to speak.
At least they thought he wasn’t sentient before.
« What’s going on? »
« Virgil? »
« Patton! »
« Excuse me! » all those present turned their heads toward the source of sound, who was none else but the animal himself. « I believe I might be the most perplexed one in here. »
Logan sighed deeply and approached the table. « I apologize … » he stopped, unsure of how he should have carried on. « How do you address a bat? »
« Let me do the talking. » Roman shoved him aside, the buzzing feeling of his connection to the animal lingered. « Greetings, amiable creature. It just so happens that- »
« It’s you. » the bat stared intensely in Virgil’s direction after heaving himself up the best he could.
« Huh? » was all the kid could say.
« You gave me the card. You told me he would have helped. I wouldn’t actually call this helping, you know? »
Then, it dawned on Virgil. « You’re the marquis? »
« Precisely, somehow. »
Everybody’s behavior seemed to change at that; the kid realized his mistake, Roman slowly backed away in sudden shyness while Patton and Logan connected the dots.
« You sent him to Remus? » both of them demanded in unison, surprised. They had warned him plenty of times in the past not to approach the man’s shop: it wasn’t exactly because they believed him to be wicked, as they had never interacted, but any magician was at war with another unless stated otherwise. It seemed to be an unspoken rule, none was to be trusted.
« You know him? » the man, now bat, felt hope rise in his chest.
« Barely. » Patton admitted. « His shop has this weird peculiarity which causes it to change place within the town every day. He doesn’t seem to be bothered, but it’d surely be a pain to find him now. »
If bats could sigh in defeat, the marquis had just done that.
« Let’s start from the beginning. » Logan gathered some chairs with a swift movement of his wrist. « What exactly happened to you? »
Ah. That was going to be fun.
How to tell your story in detail while leaving out the plot points that determine that you’re a vampire while talking to four most likely intelligent people that could connect the dots in no time?
Truly a piece of cake for our favorite man of town, wasn’t it?
I came here, I contemplated my dead life on a mosaic, I injured myself with- I actually still have no idea what it was, a bunch of children saw me, your son handed me this visiting card, I went there and this charming guy had the nerve to transform me into a bat to solve my aesthetical issue.
Nailed it.
Okay, maybe that wasn’t exactly what he told them, but it was around there more or less.
Fortunately, they didn’t ask further questions; the real issue presented itself when Logan pointed out the hex Remus had thrown on the marquis was too powerful for his own magic.
After some discussing, they resigned to having to find him and force him to reverse the spell. Of course, in the meantime, Roman was the one to offer himself to help the bat in their mission.
« Oh! Are you going to marry him as a bat now? »
Roman sprinted out of the house with the animal in his hands as he heard a “What was that?” coming from him.

« It must be tough, this whole situation I mean. To you. Finding yourself randomly flying at once. » Roman had no idea where all his eloquence had gone to, while he kept the bat steady on his shoulder.
They were on their way to the manor, just a few meters away from the gates, so that they could have made their plan to reach Remus while also arranging the place for the theater production.
Which was also never going to take place.
But Roman didn’t know that.
« Not really. » the marquis responded. « It’s easy to adjust to this condition. » he also was quick to add, as there were no means of explaining to the prince of the truth about his identity.
Mostly for his safety.
« Well then, that’s good. »
Awkward silence followed until the gates presented themselves to their eyes, now only a meter away. Of course, as the man’s body disappeared with his belongings, the key was gone too.
He guided Roman to a clearing in the bushes he had noticed before the inevitable had happened.
« Oh! That’s pretty. » the prince immediately marched towards a group of flowers seemingly put in a random disposition.
The marquis didn’t remember them being there.
He did remember golden blood, though.
« Wait! »
Roman halted altogether, confusion written all over his face. « They’re not going to eat me, sir. » he commented, as he crouched down in front of them.
« Please, you need to listen to me. » an urgent tone filled the silence of the gardens. « They weren’t there before. » an half-lie. « Knowing what happened to me, we better not touch anything else. » to preserve oneself.
Still baffled that simple plants could hurt anyone, Roman complied and slowly rose to his feet. His new direction was the wooden doors and, ultimately, that one very comfortable-looking sofa right in the middle of the vast living room.
The bat was placed on top of the coffee table and Roman leaned forward with his elbows on his knees to give him more attention.
In all honesty, he knew that was actually that tremendously handsome marquis he saw earlier that day, but gosh darn if he didn’t have the urge to pet the little animal every time he looked at him. Not his fault if he looked soft, now.
The prince cleared his throat. « Alright. The production can wait until we’ve found a way to turn you back. What do we know about Remus until now? »
« His spells are irreversible unless he’s the one to break them. »
« No asking Logan or Patton for help, then. »
« His shops shows up at random places at random times. »
« Unpredictable locations, we’d need to search the whole town every day. »
« He also looks a bit like you. »
Roman did a double take. « I’m sorry? »
If bats could shrug, the prince was sure he had just done that. « I’m just stating what I know about him. » he was given an odd look. « Don’t you worry, your majesty, you still win in attractiveness if that concerns you. »
And there Roman was, getting flustered because of a bat.
A handsome bat in person though.
He meant the person, of course.
Was he ever going to stop thinking about-
« I’m sure you do, too. »
« What was that? »
What the hell, Roman?
« Nothing! » he dramatically got up opening his arms. « So yeah, planning. »
« Sure. » the man didn’t sound convinced.
« The moment you heal your wing, you could fly up above the place so we can find the shop sooner. Until then, I could stay here and keep the rumors about your disappearance down by focusing the chattering on me, rather than you. »
« Am I wrong to believe you have a natural instinct of putting yourself in the spotlight or …? »
« Absurd. I am merely sacrificing my image to protect yours. » the ghost of a grin painted Roman’s lips.
« Oh, I am more than honored to be blessed by such generosity. » a giggle filled the room.
« I will grant you my protection. »
« I must thank you for your kindness, your Royal Highness. »
They would soon find to absolutely love that kind of bantering.

Things … developed from there.
Between walks in town, with the bat rigorously on Roman’s shoulder and his claws gripping tight on his clothes, talks about their favorite interests.
Chasing.
They had almost made it once. They had seen a suspicious figure roaming in the narrowest streets. The man they saw had immediately pulled up his hood at their sight and vanished in the darkness of a dead end.
Underwhelmed by the event, they had called it a day and withdrawn to the manor.
That was when the marquis found out Roman actually recited lines from plays he had never heard out loud when dreadful feelings caught him.
He would lie on a mattress and throw an arm over his eyes. Then, his voice did the magic. He didn’t even need his body to express his emotions, already clear with the tone he used.
And yet, he whispered. He almost only mouthed them, but in his head, they were perfect.
To the bat’s ears, they were divine, to say the least.
Theatre was something they occasionally talked about, starting from the production that should have taken place in that very building, to every little piece of memory Roman held dear of plays he’d seen in his past.
He noticed his eyes shining bright as he jumped between different specks of his life, the excitement in his storytelling intensified every day more.
And with it, also the marquis’ … appreciation for the prince.
All the little details changed in his point of view as the weeks fled.
For instance, goodness, did he like his singing.
It was as if Roman went from reciting troubled monologues when sad, to singing his heart out in his happiest moments. And it was beautiful.
« Hold me. Whatever lies beyond this morning is a little later on. Regardless of warnings, the future doesn’t scare me at all. Nothing’s like before. »
When his wing had started to heal so much that he could fly a little, he often rushed to reach the prince and see the show.
And at some point, especially as Roman noticed him, he started partaking in them too.
Although he didn’t have a single idea on how acting worked and often ended up just mesmerized by Roman’s voice and the beauty that shined in him when he explained plots and intricate points with a fiery passion.
If somebody had asked him, he wouldn’t have been able to tell which was the exact moment where he developed feelings for the young prince.
Maybe upon hearing his giggling in the forest, while walking towards town. Maybe when he discovered yet another of his talents. Or maybe when he mixed singing with acting in the most splendid of exhibitions he had ever witnessed.
He had definitely come to terms with it when a thought dawned on him, the thought of having to leave him once his body was back. It ate away at his stomach, it was as if something inside him told him he should have stayed that way forever, if it meant keeping the prince by his side.
He didn’t want to lose him anymore.
Getting his body back would have meant having to part ways forever. The marquis knew he had to leave as soon as he could have. And it simply and utterly sucked.
He also knew he should’ve gotten rid of those feelings, none would have agreed to keep up with his lifestyle anyway.
Constantly on the run and go.
As he watched him dance alone in the mosaic room, he recognized that no, that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.

For Roman, it was a little different.
Sure, he had always thought that the bat looked kind of adorable, but he couldn’t shake off the realization that he had seen the marquis’s human body. He knew what he looked like and it was kinda like he was hugging him constantly when he kept him in his hands, close to his chest.
And it wasn’t like he actually wanted to change that, once the issue was over.
Though, the thought of that made his heartbeat a tiny bit faster than usual, which made him an awful lot more flustered, as if he had just told the person concerned.
The feeling didn’t vanish with time, but only strengthened.
He couldn’t even imagine his baffled expression as the marquis trailed off in one of their conversations as he started talking about issues deep within the human soul.
The bat’s immense knowledge of both psychology and philosophy was to be admired, maybe the biggest Roman had ever encountered even between the royals around him.
There were some literary circles, but sometimes human sciences were frowned upon and the royalty was denied any kind of education on them.
« Roman? » the marquis had called out to the man lying on the couch in front of him.
Who was, at the moment, inexorably asleep with his face in his arms.
He was going to apologise about that for the rest of his life, but hey, when you’re tired, you’re tired.
It was also pretty endearing how he woke up to a blanket messily laid onto his body.
What demoralised him, despite all the giddiness in his stomach, was when he noticed the marquis seemed to be keeping something from him. Nothing he could pinpoint exactly, yet he knew there was a topic he brushed off.
Mostly when he talked about his family.
Nothing came out of those conversations, which led Roman to think of the worst: he couldn’t imagine what kind of relationship he must have or have had with his parents, or what sort of situation he was in.
What he was sure about was that he felt for him.
Felt happiness around him, empathy when the other was down, sorrow in words never spoken but events that had already happened and scarred the marquis’s heart.
He felt way deeper than how he felt for other people.
Thus, he could recognize that, ultimately, he fell for him, too.

When you look for the perfect sign, you tend to withdraw until the right occasion presents itself.
« Goodness, » Roman laughed quietly in the kitchen, turned to the cupboards on the wall. « It seems people started spreading rumors about me being a vampire because they saw you on my shoulder. »
And when that happens, an anxious buzzing starts shaking your insides.
« That … would be a shame. » the bat looked down, unsure of his own words.
« Why would that be? » Roman turned with curiosity. « Sure, I’d lose some colour, but heightened senses? Amazing powers? »
« That depends. »
« How so? »
« Blood chaste. How you were turned. The assets of the vampire that turned you or gave birth to you. »
The prince smiled through pursed lips. « Seems like someone read a dark ancient book from the Index of forbidden books. »
« Well … » and the buzzing grew louder. « I can talk from experience, too. »
He waited for the realization to hit.
« W-wait. Do you mean you met them, or …? »
He sighed the same way a bat could. « It is not a curse, Roman, you can say it. But yes, the latter. »
What he was also waiting for was fear. Disgust. Rejection. Anything but whatever crossed the prince’s mind.
« Oh my- »
« I know- »
« -I haven’t been giving you proper food for weeks! »
What now?
The man wasn’t sure whether he thought it or actually said it out loud.
« How long can you go without blood? It’s been six weeks tomorrow, oh dear, you must be starving. » Roman put his hands on his hair. He had this instinctual habit of worrying for others’ well-being before actually thinking rationally about the situation around him.
Maybe it was his princely duties to make him think that way, maybe he really didn’t want to think about the wonderland he felt like he stepped into when he realized he fell in love- he fancied a vampire.
Actually, a myriad of thoughts swirled in his head.
« I- No, I’m perfectly fine. My blood chaste is the highest, meaning I can go a very long time without drinking. »
« Oh. »
« You don’t have to … worry? » the marquis tried.
“But I always worry about you” was what Roman wanted to answer.
« Are you, like, some kind of royal in your chaste? » that was when they started traveling down dangerous paths.
« Sort of. I only just found that out, when I bled because of the garden trap. » the marquis remembered how confused he felt at the glimmering liquid on his hand.
Roman’s voice and expression both softened up. « You … don’t know who turned you? »
« Honestly, I only have a name. It’s kind of complicated. »
« Very well then, » Roman placed a cup of hot flaming tea on the surface of the table, not too far away from the bat. He sat down. « I’m willing to understand. »
The marquis took a deep breath and paused, sorting out the thoughts in his head.
« I’m from a country in the north. You may think I’m wealthy because of my title, but its value is actually nonexistent. My parents barely had anything to survive and … well, when they felt their life slowly fade away, they knew I wasn’t going to make it on my own. Barely anyone in my town would have been able to. »
« Apparently, they had someone they could rely on. The only thing I know is his name is Thomas … » he paused. Maybe he should’ve gone to look for him ever since. « They had told me to open a box as soon as things went wrong. Inside, I found a vial and a letter with all the instructions. I followed them and prepared myself before, well, committing to the act. After that, I learnt everything I needed to know and started to look for different places to stay. »
The bat seemed to shrug. Roman had now his arms crossed on the table and his face half-buried in them, paying careful attention. He also wanted to hide the frown in his face.
« And now I’m here. »
« I wish- » the prince instantly commented, rising from his slouched position. « I don’t know. I just wish we would take better care of every single spot under our reign. »
« Roman. » the marquis spoke in a reprimanding but softer tone. « Both you and I know that’s impossible nowadays. »
« It still should be my duty to not let things like these happen. » he looked to the side. « But does the assembly ever listen to me? Absolutely not. You have no idea how many times I’ve told them about how we could change this town for the better. I’ve been rejected at any given prompt. »
Were he an actual human at the moment, Roman would have probably seen the compassion flooding the man’s face.
« I really don’t get it. It’s that simple! » the prince opened his arms. « And then- and then something like this happens. » he pointed to the bat. « Because people have no other choice, thanks to us. »
« It isn’t a wrong choice, though. » a pair of perplexed eyes set on him. « I mean, to some extent, I’m still alive. And I think, with the right knowledge and time to adjust, it isn’t so bad after all. »
« Well … »
« No, I’m serious. You might need to change your life, but years after you know your routine. And I don’t have to worry about many other issues I was constantly anxious about before. »
A small smile crept on Roman’s lips at that. « You sure? »
« I’m fine, Ro. Really. »
The prince considered, staring at the marquis with his head tilted to the side. There had to be something else he could have done, apart from giving him back his body. Something that could have assured his safety, to say the least.
Roman wished to erase all of his concerns.
« I want you to find a place where you can stay until it doesn’t fascinate you anymore. » he gave voice to his musings. « Maybe … you could come with me when we’re done here? » he suggested, slowly brightening as ideas formed in his mind. The theatre production didn’t matter anymore, anyway.
« How so? »
« A prince always has his ways. There are infinite possibilities! Think about it, I know where everyone is all the time, I would know where to keep you. My parents don’t even remember the servants’ faces. »
« Oh, to be a humble servant in love with the prince. » the bat mocked.
« In love? » Roman repeated, amusement in his expression. And a very invisible and sudden twist of his heart.
« For sure. »
Jokes on them.
« Well then, my humble servant. » the prince got up and moved the cup of tea he definitely didn’t forget on the counter and walked towards the door of the room. « We have a big day ahead so I’m going to rest. You should try to get some sleep too since you won’t tomorrow. »
« How many times do I have to say bats aren’t strictly a nightly species? »
« One more, please. »
When their laughter was done, Roman lingered on the entrance.
« Thank you for opening up to me. And … please consider what I told you, okay? »
« I will. » the man answered warmly.
With that, they were both left to their sleepless night, daydreaming about possibilities they hoped could come real.
But the marquis had already made up his mind.

His blood ran cold as he felt the tip of a sword being pointed to his back. Well, fucking shit.
« Hello there, is the shop open? » Remus knew exactly whose voice that was despite the fact that he had never heard it once in his entire life.
When he turned, he was met with none else but the prince’s figure standing tall behind him, while a tiny bat sat attentive on his shoulder. Of course.
Remus got up, his hood still covering the majority of his face.
« To what do I owe the pleasure? »
« No playing around. » Roman demanded, serious in his tone and eyes. He stared at Remus as he moved, sword raising with every movement. « Change my friend back this instant. »
Oh, marvelous. They were friends now, how could he have not taken that into account?
« Sorry, business is closed at the moment. » he retorted, spitting his words out. The sword flew to his chin in an instant.
« Are you sure about that? » venom, nothing but venom, more than the marquis had ever felt in his own body.
Remus sighed and eventually lowered his hood, revealing his identity once and for all. « You sure do know how to have fun, my dearest brother. »
And Roman almost dropped his weapon on the ground.
He had called him what now?
The prince went quickly over the facial features of the man in front of his eyes, it felt like looking at his own mirror, minus the facial hair and the white streak.
Or the dark circles around his eyes and the pale almost ill-looking skin.
Maybe it felt actually like looking at a mirror that showed an alternate life in which all he had found was misery. And he couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by a sense of pity.
« We’re- You- I’m sorry. I apologize. I’m … I’m confused. »
Remus arched an eyebrow. « Confused? What’s there to explain? »
« How in the world I have never known I had a twin brother, for instance. » Roman placed the bat on a stable surface next to him, afraid he would have made him fall as his entire body seemed to be trembling with an overflow of emotions.
What was happening?
« Never known? » the former duke opened his arms. « Hadn’t you refrained from acknowledging me this whole time? »
« What? » the prince’s mind was racing. « I’d never do that! I don’t even know your name! » tears welled up in his eyes from frustration. He had to keep it together, gosh why was it so difficult?
« Okay, okay. Hold on a second. »
« The bat talks? »
« I know. Mages. »
« Both of you, sit down. » the marquis demanded, seriousness fading as, sadly, his size didn’t help in making him believable enough.
The two brothers complied anyway.
« Now, you may take turns in speaking. »
« Yeah, what the hell happened? Mom and dad never gave you the evil twin speech? »
Roman shrugged in confusion. « I guess not. I promise to you, I was grown to believe to be an only child. They never told me about you … I guess that’s the reason why they never wanted me to come here alone in the first place. Have you always been here? »
« Since I can recall. » Remus nodded, his mind traveling as far back as it could. « This wasn’t a town at first. It was my dukedom. But our beloved parents destroyed it before I could even reach the age of ruling. I lived here with some servants, but they left as soon as they declared negated all the titles in this land. I was locked out of the manor and I tried to survive on my own from there. » the rage in his brother’s chest filled the gap in his childhood that could have been taken by his time with Remus.
« Every time you came here, I was locked inside my shop for days. As you can see, I got bored and studied whatever magical stuff was in there and this is where I ended up. » he pointed to the bat who was staring at them.
« This is insane! » Roman talked still in disbelief.
« You can say our parents may be two pieces of shit. »
« Doing this only to protect their image? » the prince seemed to be talking to himself, until he turned to his brother again. « I’m sorry on their behalf. I literally have no words to describe how awful I feel. » he rested his face in his hands and sighed deeply. What was there to say? It’s not like he could have done much else with no knowledge of his existence.
Then, an idea.
« We’re going to get your manor back. »
« Huh? »
« And the dukedom. I’ll make sure to restore your titles. Unless you don’t want to come back as a prince, as it should be your right. »
Remus considered the possibilities, he did want to get at least his early decent life back, but … the idea of his parents in front of his eyes and constantly around him didn’t sit right with him.
« I’ll … think about it? » his gaze stopped on the bat. « What about him? »
« Believe me, if you turn me back right now I can leave the entire town to your own needs. »
He chuckled. Ah, the sweet sound of desperation.
Remus focused just that itty bit he needed, before muttering a spell under his breath and sending a green flicker to hit the animal’s body.
And that was it.
As if nothing had ever happened, there the actual marquis stood, in flesh and bones, as alive as his condition permitted him to be, leaning against whatever he was previously standing on as a bat.
The scars were still splitting his blind eye and cheek in a half.
As the man checked his body for anomalies, Remus didn’t definitely miss how his brother held his breath involuntarily. He side glanced both of them, as the eyes of the two met holding the gaze for a few seconds.
Yeah. It seemed kind of obvious.
« This is all? »
He nodded.
Roman stood up in a rush, as if he had just remembered how to move his limbs, and launched himself at the now anthropomorphic figure of the marquis.
« Gosh, finally, we made it! »
Though, the other’s enthusiasm wasn’t exactly as strong.
« You can’t do anything for the scars? » he looked over to Remus, who didn’t even have the time to reply as Roman, well, he didn’t really think he was going to let him go down that way.
« I think he shouldn’t. » he offered the hint of a smile. « You look absolutely fine with them. »
« For the love of the greatest Sorcerer, if you need to get it on please stay away from my manor. »
Roman really really wished he still had the sword in his grip in that exact moment.
Gay panic ensued, together with very flustered people and a soon to be again duke leading the way back to the town centre. Before they could reach the manor, Remus stopped, his shop nearby.
« I’ll think about your offer. » he informed Roman. « In the meantime, I think I’ll have some packing to do. » he pointed to his left, revealing the door of his shop right next to him.
His brother nodded and saluted him with a movement of his hand and a subtle smile. When he turned, Remus grabbed the marquis’s shoulder.
« Listen, I see how you look at each other. »
The man arched an eyebrow. « And? »
« Just. Don’t do anything stupid. »
« Nothing you would do, then? »
« Precisely. »
The marquis laughed quietly. « I’ll do my best. »
Remus honestly didn’t know what to expect from that.

« Hey. »
So close.
His hand lingered on the gates’ bars. He turned and was met with a figure standing beside him, arms crossed and a dull expression adorned by hurt eyes.
« Going for a walk? » Roman’s tone was everything he didn’t want to hear.
The man sighed. Doing this the hard and painful way hadn’t been his intention. Yet, he knew he had to break Remus’s promise as soon as he had made it.
« Roman- »
« You could have just told me. »
He took a minimal step back. « What? »
« That you weren’t even planning on staying. » Roman was looking him in the eyes and it felt like keeping your gaze close to the fire. « You didn’t need to lead me on until now only to leave me like this. »
« It’s not that. » he intruded, speaking softly.
« Say it. » the prince sounded exasperated. « Just say it already. At least I can convince myself it isn’t my fault. »
« It’s not. » was there someone at fault? The marquis pressed his fingertips on the inner corner of his eyes. He didn’t want to do this. He really didn’t want to. « I can’t stay. »
« Why? »
« Because I’m constantly running away! » his hands flew away from his face. « I can’t stay anywhere long enough because I’m just wrong in comparison to everyone else. I’m different and I have to escape before anyone could pick up on that. »
Roman still stared at him; they had gone through that already once, why was it so difficult for him to stay just because he was a vampire? Why couldn’t he come with him?
« This life sucks and I couldn’t ask you to endure it. You wouldn’t be able to. »
« Who says that? »
« I do! I’ve been doing this for years and even I can’t handle it. » his hand was clutched to his chest in a fist. He didn’t want to, « I kill everything around me. » but the tears had already started running even without his permission.
Roman stepped forward as his expression shifted slowly to sympathy. No. The man’s mind raced. No, no, no.
He took a step back. « I come here and I discover I have golden blood, » Roman stopped a few feet away. « I get to know I belong to the royal chaste of vampires, as if a regular one wasn’t bad as it is. » his breathing turned heavier. « And because of that, everything inside my body is poisonous. Others can track me down easily and we aren’t exactly the friendliest species. You’d be in danger. »
If the prince had come forward again, he hadn’t noticed.
« I am constantly running away and a constant risk to the ones around me. » Roman was raising his hand and he gently shoved it away, fearing the worst.
« This isn’t a fairytale, Roman. It’s a horror story and it ends badly either for the protagonist or the monster. Are you even listening? »
« Are you? » Roman’s hand hovered over his arm, waiting to move further. « You’re asking me not to follow you when I’m already attached to you by a chain? » he ducked his head to make the other look at him directly in his dark eyes.
« You want me to stay still when I’m inches away from being able to console you with a sole touch? » the prince could see the veiled freight in the man’s eyes as he raised his hand again, a moment away from his cheek wet by tears.
One.
An instant.
His fingers were already caressing his cheek as new tears soaked it while the poison stuck to his skin.
And it was over.
« You’re telling me- »
« Roman, what did you do? »
« You’re telling me, » both of Roman’s hands were on his cheeks, thumbs brushing away his crying. « That I wouldn’t be able to kiss you, when there isn’t a single thing in the world I want to do more? »
The man’s heart almost completely stopped in his chest, melting as Roman’s lips moved to form ulterior sweet words he didn’t feel he deserved. He had his back pressed on the gates the same way an overwhelming feeling weighed down his stomach.
He was dying. Roman was dying and there was only one thing to do.
Killing him even faster, but only just.
His lips were the weapon, his teeth were the bullets and the poison was the god of Death. As he kissed the prince, pulling him close, the thought of that blatant murder allowed contrasting feelings.
He saved him by signing his death certificate, he could have stopped and yet he didn’t.
What was desire? An abstract concept inherent in human race. As you satisfy a wish, a new one makes way into your mind.
There was no actual satisfaction, but a constant yearning for more than what you already own.
They knew, because their lips weren’t able to break apart if not for a few seconds, before diving in again into something they knew they couldn’t fill.
Yet, nature envied them. The flowers desired to stand tall, plants wanted to show their vivid colours, the rivers wished they could shine limpidly even under the moonbeam.
But they had to wait, left unfulfilled and in permanent disquiet until they got what they wanted.
The lovers, though. They were unstoppable and invincible for as long as their hands touched and their hearts were connected.
Finally, Roman smiled. His arms lowered on the marquis’ shoulders and he chuckled.
« It appears I am bound to you, now. »
« You’re the stupidest person I’ve met. » the man gripped at his clothes and pulled him in for another quick kiss. « You’re stupid. I can’t believe you’re such an idiot and a prince at the same time. »
« I’m thinking about retiring. »
« Oh my stars, he’s gone. »
« Think about it! I could send Remus rule in my place, let our parents deal with what they’ve left behind. » Roman heard him snort with laughter. « What? It’s a perfect plan. »
« Yeah, right. » the man searched his eyes. « What about you? »
« We can run away together. You won’t be alone to fight off the ones that want to take you down. »
« This isn’t going to be easy. You’ll turn any moment now and you’ll need time to adjust to your new condition. » Roman nodded at that. « We’ll have to stay out of sight for a while, can you do that? »
« I can. » Roman’s determination made him want to take on the world with his bare hands.
Then, something in Roman’s eyes shifted. « Also, am I going to pass out or are you actually extremely stunning right now? » the prince’s eyebrows narrowed, his vision blurry.
That was the red code.
« Let’s get you in before everybody sees you. »
« I love you. » the marquis almost tripped over himself. That man needed to stop.
« I do too, but please refrain from speaking until later. »

« Please, take care, okay? Visit as soon as you can. » Patton hugged the two one last time, nostalgia already washing over him. Logan had just given his own goodbyes and was keeping a very unhappy Virgil still.
One week had passed since Roman’s turning, they had decided to leave as he looked stable enough.
« Are you sure you don’t want me to, I don’t know, hex the whole town or something so you can stay longer? » Remus offered as his brother stifled a laugh. That was low-key endearing. Odd, as not much time earlier he had despised him under false accusations.
They shared a hug, too. « We’re going to be fine. » Roman promised and handed him the princely stuff he wasn’t going to need anymore. « And as you would say … » his expression contorted deep in thought. « Fuck ‘em up? »
« What did you say? » Virgil interrupted, while his parents collectively sent death glares at Roman.
« Duck the cup. » the marquis offered, eyeing the brothers with a sharp look. « As a metaphorical good luck wish, I suppose. »
« Like when they crash bottles against ships? »
« Definitely. »
When their last conversation came to an end, the prince and the marquis started walking away.
Roman looked back to them, his pace slowing down. He locked eyes with Virgil.
« Now! »
Virgil broke free of his dad’s grip and sprinted forward to them, laughing like he had just told the funniest joke in existence. Roman scooped him up in his arms and started running while his lover stared at him in utter disbelief.
« Roman, what the hell! » Logan ran after him, causing the laughter to spread between all those present.
« You absolute mad man! »
It took twenty minutes for the real departure to happen. But at least, they were all smiling.
And, maybe, teary-eyed too. But they were not going to mention it until later some months, or even years, where they could all finally meet again and catch up with their incredible lives.
Until then, they would keep smiling.

They had been traveling the whole day, the sun shone from behind the mountains in the distance, almost completely hidden, so that the light coloured in rosy tones.
It did feel like a fairy tale, in the long run.
Roman was already smiling to himself when a small giggle escaped his lips.
« What’s so funny? » his lover turned enough to both look at him and be aware of their path.
« You never told me your name. » the prince was looking ahead, quite amused.
« Were I to tell you, you’d never be able to fly among the constellations like you’ve always dreamt. » he remembered one of the many stories he had told him while still a bat.
« I believe I can risk that. »
« I wouldn’t want to bear the guilt of taking that away from you. » they stopped in their tracks and faced each other. « But there might be a way I can help with. »
With no warning, the marquis leaned in and pecked Roman’s lips, softly, so that he could have sensed that small spark in his chest before it transformed into a thunderous firework.
« Is that how you reach the stars? »
The man only smirked at Roman, going back to lead the way through the yellow field. Their road towards a new life was starting to clear.
And their kingdom shone for evermore.

Wandering Hops: The Overnight
Dreams are funny things, and, in many ways, are the fuel of ambition. What starts as a simple notion, a far off impossible idea, can gradually resolve into something more concrete. Ultimately leading one to push past their limits, and strive for that impossible goal.
Of course, our definitions of the impossible change as we grow. There was a time when I thought it impossible that I would ever be published. There was a time when I never thought I’d travel much, or see much of the United states. Yesterday’s dreams are often, tomorrow's achievements, but it’s not always that clean. Everyone’s life is littered with broken and discarded goals and dreams, often filling the darker corners of our minds with moody regrets of what might have been.
Gradually, as time passes those shadows can get longer, producing tendrils that drag down our daily lives, miring us in a fog of what could have been.
Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, is one of my dreams. Spanning 2680 miles, it’s a five month thru hiking marathon, that takes you from the searing depths of the Mojave, to soaring peaks like Mt Whitney. It’s an immense technical and fitness challenge that will see roughly 60% of those that attempt it ultimately leave the trail disappointed.
Ah there it is, on the horizon! If you look very hard and perhaps squint, you will begin to see the point of this rambling introduction.
In short, I’m going for it. With a target start date of April 3rd 2020, my plans are to be in Campo, California, just a few feet from the Mexican border as I begin a slow and deliberate trek north, that will most likely not conclude until late September or early October.
Just under 10 months out now, my hiking, planning, training, and even the writing of this blog, has all fallen under that particular focus. I am going to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. Gear is being bought, miles are being run, exercises are being done, but there is more to it than that. In order to be ready, I need to make certain that I have the skills and experience necessary to get me to Canada, and to do that, I have to overnight.
Backpacking is a technical step up from day hiking, and, in a way, taking it to its logical conclusion. If you can overnight, you can cover more miles, take on more difficult treks, and visit a wider variety of places.
The PCT is the ultimate overnight, and so, a section of it near my home, seemed as good a place as any to kick off my first full, backpacking experience.
As Maya would say, “Let’s get this bread!”
Starting off from Bridge of the Gods, the first section of my hike took me over the Columbia River Gorge, suspended almost 200 feet in the air, with nothing but grated metal below me. It felt like I was walking across the sky, save that I had to share the space with vehicles zipping by after the toll bridge, leaving me only a few inches of room, with nowhere to go but down if something went wrong.
With my heart rate pumping from sheer anxiety, I made my way carefully north, dashing across Washington 14, before I saw a welcome sign that I had been looking forward to seeing for 10 years….
Up and into the woods I went, finding the trail to be extremely quiet. It’s still too early in the season for those thru hiking from the south to be passing through, and with how overgrown parts of it were with brush and bramble, I soon had the sense that I might be one of the few people on that portion.
Spoiler alert… I wasn’t.
Solitude while hiking, is one of the things I strive for. Being alone in nature grants me time to think and plan. Oftentimes, I’ll spend hours listening to the birds sing, as the rhythmic beat of my foot falls provide a strange sharp counterpoint to their song, causing the world to blur into a type of symphony of movement and sound.
The goal for this hike was not to reach any particular point, but to see how far I could go, with the current gear I have. At forty pounds fully loaded, it’s still far too much for any kind of thru hike, but it’s not bad for training. With the straps of my old kelty digging into my shoulders, I continued to climb up the gorge, determined to go for fifteen miles, before setting down for the night.
At four miles in, after rounding a bend, Gillete Lake came into view, and with it, came my first check in. Letting the husband know I was alive, and had plenty of energy. Pack or no, I pressed on, deeper into the woods. As I steadily climbed in elevation, my legs began to burn, and my back began to hurt, but at the moment, I didn’t care.
I was on the trail. The one place I had wanted to be for years, and I wasn’t about to let pack weight stop me. The trail kept heading up, until I came to my first bridge, taking me over a cataracting stream swollen with melt water from the upper Cascades, charging back down the slope, heading for Gillette Lake.
My world was serene and beautiful, full of verdant forest, high above the Columbia, and fully out of its humidity. In short, there seemed no better way to spend a Saturday at that particular moment. That conviction. worked like a fuel, pushing me further on up steepening grades and switchbacks.
However, at five and a half miles, it began to become clear that something was wrong. A knife like pain was growing louder and louder in my left scapula, sending shockwaves of pain up through my neck, and down my left arm. Far from a normal exertion type pain, this, I knew, could be serious if I didn’t address it, but I was only seven miles in, of a planned fifteen.
This was not what I had come to do, even though I had started this hike with no particular destination. My destination was my mileage, and I was far from that yet.
Still, as I approached 6 and a half miles, it grew only worse, and I knew I was coming to a fateful choice. If I pushed, I could injure myself, taking myself out for the rest of the hiking season, and potentially put myself at risk for my stubbornness. The other option though, seemed just as unpalatable.
Turn back, head for Gillette Lake and camp there, giving me time to rest, and recover.
The choice was obvious, if not disappointing, I turned around, feeling humbled, and began my journey back.
At first, I was full of recrimination, but as I walked along, gaining miles now in the other direction, trying to ignore the growing pain in my shoulder, I realized that the choice I made, had been an important one to my success.
My dream wasn’t dead. One moment turning around, accepting my limitations in both gear, and ability, was not me leaving the PCT behind. Rather, by acknowledging and accepting my current limits, and listening to my body, I was better ensuring that I would make it to April 3rd, ready and prepared to take on the challenge of the trail.
This wasn’t the end. It was the beginning.
Returning to Gillete lake, I ended up finding a nice quiet campsite near water, and set up for my overnight. As soon as I dropped my pack and set up camp, the pain quickly went away, only reinforcing the idea I had made the right choice.
With camp established I settled down. With no miles to pursue, hours before sunset, with nothing but the quiet of the woods around me I found myself facing an unexpected challenge.
What was I going to do now?
Sleep would not come for hours yet. Hell, dinner would not come for hours yet. My tent was set up, my gear was organized and packed away; the day had zipped by in a perfect, managed efficiency. Now here I was, listening to the same birdsong, surrounded by the same nature, but in the quiet, with no motion to carry me forward, I wondered what I could do to occupy the time.
Luckily, in that 40lbs of pack weight, I decided to include my kindle, along with a few audiobooks on my phone. Laying out in my tent staring up at the ceiling, letting my shoulder recover, I got caught up with Anaszi Boys by Neil Gaiman, wandering his well crafted universe.
These days happen. In all of my research and reading boredom is something thru hikers often face. After a while, hiking is just something you do. You wake up, break camp, and get on the trail. Even the most amazing experience becomes routine with enough repetition, and being able to manage that boredom is a key to completion just as much as your fitness and preparation is.
My next surprise came with dinner. The day had grown muggy and warm while the insects chirped cheerily and loudly from their bushes. Before my hike I had selected a chipotle soup that seemed a perfect meal after a day of hard work, but sitting there, sweating in the humidity, I instead elected to have a probar and some nuts.
This hike was meant to be dress rehearsal, and an overall test, so I prepped like it was time for the big show. As the sun set, and the frogs began to sing, I began to appreciate the idea that I had left myself with options having packed extra food just in case.
Where I didn’t have options though, was my sleeping bag. It proved to be a sticky, swampy, sweaty experience as I curled up for the night. The warnings in the reviews came back to bite me that it didn’t breathe well. In high humidity, and eighty degree temperatures I might as well have been in a sauna, waking up every few hours from the experience.
You can’t win all the time I guess…
Finally, the morning came, and while I didn’t make my full fifteen miles, and had a somewhat miserable sleep, I still felt like a success. Here I was, on the Pacific Crest Trail, doing my first overnight, and the choices I had made, ensured that it wasn’t a one off, but the first of many.
I was learning what to do, what not to do, and what to change, which matters more than mileage ever will.
Having one of the most amazing oatmeal breakfasts of my life… (thank you Mountain House!) I then broke camp, and set out, back to Bridge of the Gods, already looking forward to my next adventure.
Dreams push us to exceed our limitations, but by accepting where you are today, you can go where you only dreamed of tomorrow.

Checking in with Grandpa
It's been a while since you visited the old man. You figure you've left him hanging long enough. He'd probably love to hear from you, what's been going on in his granddaughter's life. You head quietly through the halls of the lower floors, still and calm and differently decorated than the upper floors where you live. You stop in front of an old oak door with a brass knob and a plaque on its face, and slowly turn the handle. You peek your head in slowly, looking into Grandpa's study. It's always dim in here, the fug of cologne and gunpowder and cognac baked into the room's very soul. He stands there in the dim, facing the ornate marble fireplace, which -
FWOOMPH!
- ignites dramatically into a warmly crackling blaze as you settle your gaze on it. There he goes - The old man, "Hass" "The Flame" Harley, always with such a flare for the bombastic. Your Grandpa stands Stout and Resolute in front of the mantle, seeming to gaze long and hard into the flames. You take his dramatics as consent to enter, and you stand a few paces behind him, nervously tenting your hands. He's always been so tall, so imposing, and you've barely gained an inch since your session began. You're basically still the same dorky kid as ever, eternally youthful. You hesitate, waiting a reasonably long moment, then finally speak.
hi grandpa! sorry to bother you, i know you probably have a lot of work to do! but i wanted to come visit you in here and say hi! ...sorry i havent come down in a couple of weeks or uhm... months. i got all caught up in my work and in my head and kinda stayed cooped up in my lab up there below the greenhouse. huh? yes! before you ask, ive got three computers with me including the ones in my head and my glasses, and i do think the caliber of my current rifle is plenty sufficient! no i dont need to borrow the blunderbuss but thank you anyway! i will let you know when i need it okay? its overkill for anything but bosses!
You sigh heavily. He's always such a worrywart, hassling you over your preparedness and the bore of your firearms! You huff your trademark Harley Huff, then sigh and deflate a little. You know his hounding you is just how he shows that he cares, in his weird way.
i just wanted to let you know about some of the stuff thats been going on, though im sure youve seen hints of it here and there, mister wise and cunning hunter! first off, take a look at these babies!
You round the quiet old man to stand just past the fireplace on the far side, showing off the fluffy white fur and canine shape of your legs from the thighs down. You lift up one footpaw, showing him the glowing green footpads beneath, and wiggle your toes. The luminous glint of green reflects in your Grandpa's eyes, along with - is that interest, or pride, or just confusion? He's always been so hard to read. You'll opt for confused pride, shy of any context otherwise. You plop yourself into the dusty armchair beside the fire so you can wave your paws idly through the air for his approval, and continue your conversation face to face.

What Is An XML Sitemap?
Let’s cover the XML part first. XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language. It's a standard format for data which help others same physical devices understand via applications like FF, Chrome browsers. It’s a flexible way to tell web browsers and other programs about the data an XML document carries.
XML tags placed on either side of the address data will help tell the program what the data means. Tags are always in pairs with one opening tag and one closing tag . (.)
It might look like an example below:

For a program that recognizes those tags, it will know that’s a full street address. Then the program can use that information to do something useful.
The extensible part means those tags could be anything! If the program understood the tag to mean street number, it would still work. So a developer could use just about anything to define the data between the XML tags.

Search engines, like Google, want specific information so they know how to categorize and rank our site. The XML sitemap can provide that information.

Here’s what those the first 2 lines tags mean:
This one tells the search engine that the XML version we’re using is 1.0 and the text is encoded in UTF-8 format - Unicode. That’s the encoding specification that the sitemap must be in.

89) You’re in a focus group: If Brexit were A or B or C, below, what would it be?
A) A Car
Back in my day - when they were just realising that if you tied the pointy flinty bit to the stick you had an axe - one of the most favoured questions by so-called market researchers was, ‘if such and such were a car, what would it be?’
Or sometimes it would be an animal. Or a sport. Or whatever. You get the idea - these were not very subtle attempts to crystalise the respondents’ otherwise hard to articulate feelings about the ‘such and such’ in question.
I was put in mind of this pre-Cambridge Analytica, pre-algorhthym, and doubtless, by today’s standards, prehistoric, research method when walking through leafy Twickenham the other day. There I came up this fabulous Rover 100. A gorgeous beast. All wood and leather, about to 18 to the gallon - no bally litres then - when a gallon was about 6s8d. If you need a translation you’re really too young to understand, but to help you that’s 33p in new money. And at 0.22 litres to the gallon that is as near as dammit to 7.25p to the litre. Those were the days eh.
Yep, what a beauty. Weighed a ton, road holding just about okay providing you were going dead straight, 50 years old and closer to a horse and cart than a 2019 car. Almost a museum piece, and completely removed from the modern world. If I could get by without satnav and a reversing camera and if I didn’t demand music playing like I was in the Albert Hall and if I didn’t care that I was taking my nearest and dearest out in a deathtrap, I’d love one of these.
It would bowl along gaily pumping lead fumes into the air (when gaily meant what gaily was meant to mean and hadn’t been hi jacked by the Tom Robinson* brigade) and blithely poisoning schoolchildren.
No crush proof zones on this old girl, no collapsible steering wheel, no air bags, not even a bloody safety belt. You could go out and drink yourself silly and then go out and kill yourself and your passengers and anyone who happened to get in the way without anyone or anything to stop you.
Yet, as out of date as it is, it quickens my pulse when I see it like no brand new Beemer or Lexus can. Nothing conjures up my childhood and youth like the sight of a motor car of the period. (‘Motor car’ - what a lovely, quaint old fashioned term that is.) I would love to sit in it, to feel the leather seats under me, to smell the Connolly hide as all cars like this were advertised as having. And mixed in with that, doubtless, the lingering pong of ashtrays stuffed full of stubbed out Rothmans and Dunhills. Cigar lighters and ashtrays - you didn’t get much in the way of extras then but every Rover had those.
It’s a magnet for my nostalgia. If I had a choice between this Rover !00 and a straight of the box Tesla…..
If Brexit were a car, this would be it.
* Tom Robinson from ‘The Tom Robinson Band’, of ‘Glad to Be Gay’ fame, as opposed to Tommy Robinson of nothing-to-boast-of-at-all infamy. Only just spotted the extraordinary similarity. Could the choice of that name have been conscious irony on Yaxley-Lennon’s part? I think not. In which case, it is fucking hilarious.
B) A type of entertainment or cultural event
A few days after my astonishingly brilliant Rover insight, I found myself glued to the Last NIght of the Proms. Yes, I know, I really should get out more but, corny as it is, I was completely swept along.
Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, Land of Hope And Glory - irrestible to a septuagenarian who once sat in history lessons in chalky classrooms being shown maps of the world a quarter of which were proudly picked out in pink. (By the way, does anyone* know why pink was the colour designated to mark the countries of the British Empire? Seems a strange choice in retrospect.)
And this wasn’t ancient history either. When I started my whatever-the-opposite-of-illustrious-is career at Brighton Grammar School in 1959 - no false modesty I assure you - the wind of change had yet to blow through Africa. Canada and Australia and New Zealand and the sub-continent had gone, dammit, but we - WE - as in US - as in other people and I - were, we were told, still a world power. 11 years old and a world power. Not bad!
In those days, there was no suggestion - at least not one that had seeped into the salty ether of Brighton Grammar - that empire was anything else but something to be jolly proud of.
And so it was that, for the second time in a few days, a dazzling lightbulb pinged above my head: the Last Night of the Proms was the precise cultural manifestation of what the Leavers had been voting for.
This was what they ached for: A world where the certainties of the fities were never to be questioned. When this was a Christian country and its people were white. (Take a close look at any picture of the Proms and try to sport the black faces. It’s like Where’s Wally but without Wally.) A world where no ungrateful Frog - have they forgotten that we saved them from the Hun! - would dare to tell us to straighten our cucumbers. Where Jews were kept out of our golf clubs and Muslims were called Mosselmen and were only seen in the Arabian Nights.
A world in which men were men and if they liked other men they went to prison and if they killed other men they were killed too and if they beat other men’s children with sticks that was perfectly okay. (Okay, a little exaggeration to claim that this is what Leavers were voting for, but its just to make a point. And anyway, it’s not that much of a stretch. Try reading the ‘Comments’ section after any article in the Daily Telegrafarage.)
And here’s the awful thing: I kind of got it. Because, as I said, here was I, carried gleefully along by The Last Night of the Proms too. And wallowing in the nostagia.
But then I spotted the fly in the ointment. Or the N word in the woodpile as they used to say before the PC crowd ruined Leaver lives. I could suddenly hear the cab driver’s voice in my head: ‘You’re not going bleedin’ Adam and Eve it - them fuckin’ traitor Remainers have only gorn and fucking ruined The Last Night of the Proms too! Did you see all them EU flags?!!! At the bleedin’ Proms!’
And then, whilst researching this piece, I saw this Tweet. Nice.
And then I thought about the People’s Vote demo that I had been to on Spetember 7th in Parliament Square - it’s the kind of thing we Traitor Remainer types do of a Saturday - and saw the for the first time that terribly English, awfully traditional social group, the Football Lads Alliance, who just happened to have turned up at the same time. (Whether impicitly or explicitly encouraged so to do by the D.Cummings tendancy I know not, but nothing would surprise me.)
it was from here that the Press Associatation reported that 'former Conservative and Brexit opposition MP Anna Soubry cancelled her speech to Parliament Square for fear of violence. "I am a member of Parliament and I have the right to express myself and I should not be scared, but it is very, very, very disturbing and, in fact, I am really scared," she said.’
Her and me both.
And all this was before the great debate - as if there needs to be one because it it is so fucking obvious - about whether Johnson and Cummings were making it deliberate Tory policy to use the language of war to inflame Leaver passions so they can win an election.
I don’t mean to be alarmist. No, actually I do. You’d think it was a long, long way from the Albert Hall to Charlottesville but it seems to me be perilously close.
*Two possible answers to the ‘Why is the British Empire coloured pink?’ question found on Google:
i) Pink was a printer's compromise for letters overprinted to be clearly read, as the colour that was traditionally associated with the British Empire is red.
ii) Pink is supposed to be the colour of the Tudor rose of the English monarchy. Goes back to the War of the Roses, Henry Tudor reunited the houses of York, symbolized by the white rose, and Lancaster, symbolized by the red rose. The new House of Tudor was symbolized by the combination of the two, a pink rose.
C) A fruit or vegetable
I really have to take it easy. First the Rover, then the Proms, and then, taking an autumnal stroll in Queens Park, I suddenly felt my heart heart quickening yet again. There at my feet lay another shiny vehicle guaranteed to instantly transport me back to my days in the Outlaws*. (See foot notes if under 60.)
Yes, the mighty conker. You may not think of it as a fruit, but technically (I think) it qualifies. And if a conker isn’t Brexit on a string, well I don’t know what is. Instantly evocative of grazed knees, and corned beef and the Billy Cotton Band Show and Ted Dexter and dwindling white dots in the middle of televisions and a world which was blessedly free of the dreaded health and safety and all the other absurd modern contrivances that get in the way of living of proper British lives. All of which, as the Sun, Mail and Telegraph have been relentlessly telling us for the past forty years are, unquestionably, the evil doings of BRUSSELS!!!
But.
No sooner had I settled on the conker as my super stonking answer to question C, than I caught a bit of a radio show in which they were interviewing a bloke from the British Sandwich Association or some such. He was reassuring us that, in the event of a no-deal Brexit causing a shortage of rocket - the salad not the Scud type - which, apparently, is produced in Italy and might get stuck on the M2 in a tailback to Taormina, they will reformulate their recipes and subsitute good old British lettuce.
(For a moment I thought he was going to get into the Leaver’s beloved wartime spirit and suggest we grow our own watercress and try that instead. I am sure that will be official government policy soon so here is how to do it: https://www.wikihow.com/Grow-Watercress )
I really can’t see why I should have to live without rocket just to please Fathead Francois but, to be honest, I can, so the letttuce substitution thing didn’t bother me unduly. But then the British Sandwich chap said something which made me gasp. There might be a shortage of some other foreign foods too such as - wait for it - avocado pears.
“AVOCADO FUCKING PEARS !!!” I screamed at the radio. ‘Foreign? What? No avocados? Are you fucking kidding?”
Avocados are a staple to me and the rest of the oatmilk crowd. Indeed, even the people who are still on semi-skimmed would get their danders up if they couldn’t get an avocado. Avocados might actually be grown in some corner of a foreign field but as far as we Waitrosers are concerned they are as British as curvy bananas.
But the thing is, and call me a metropolitan elitist if you like - in fact please do, because I find it really flattering - I have a sneaking suspicion that, in Macclesfield and Middlesbrough, avocados don’t get dropped into shoppers’trolleys quite as often as they do in Guildford and Wandsworth.
Okay, I could be being a patrnising Southern twat - yup, guilty as charged - and guacamole could be as popular as pigeon fancying oop North, but somehow I doubt it.
And then came a deep and meaningful insight so deep and so meaningful that it made my Rover and Last Night of the Proms insights look as shallow and as obvious as they clearly are, and made my conker theory shatter into a dozen pieces just as surely as if I had whacked it with a nicely baked sixer**. (If under 60 see footnotes again.)
Whereas all of those are the basic representations of the Brexit the Leavers voted for, the avocado is the fruitandvegification of Brexit in a much subtler way.
It’s the culture war made made yellowy green flesh. To us Remainers the avocado is an essential. We have adopted it as our own and have completely forgotten there was any other way and just can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t love avocados and would ever want to be without them. To the hardened Leavers, it’s still a foreign object. Continental and unneccessary. Southern and poncey. What’s the avocado ever done for us?
In Afrikaans there are two words, ‘Verligte’ and ‘Verkrampte’. As I understand it, the former means ‘Open minded’ and the latter ‘Closed minded’. That, as a Remainer, is how the Brexit divide seems to me.
Can we ‘Verligte’ Remainers and those ‘Verkrampte’ Leavers ever be reconciled?
Can we all learn to love the avocado?
Or must I give the avocado up so that I can keep the Football Lads Alliance from smashing my face in.
*The Outlaws were William, Douglas, Henry and Ginger, a group of small boys in the ‘Just William’ novels by Richmal Crompton.
** A sixer. If a given conker was succesful in a number of battles it was referred to by the number of wins it had had. A sixer would have had six wins, a niner , nine etc. The ‘baked’ part refers to the practise of baking conkers in the oven for extra toughness and competitive advantage.

We traveled 11.75 miles this morning after breaking camp in 5-hours! We were a tad motivated to get to Red’s Meadows. As we hiked, we talked about the upcoming luxuries of SHOWERS. REAL FOOD. CELL SERVICE. Among many, one of the things this trail has lended me was to absolutely and constantly be thankful for the little things. As I paid the $15 for 15 minutes of clean water in an actual shower I considered people who do not have this option and how easy it is to take for granted. I couldn’t believe the MUD that rolled off of me and down the drain. Serious filth! Even though I was bathing daily in whatever body of water was available to us each evening, it just didn’t compare to a warm, clean, shower. How much this relates to Jesus! I would’ve paid $100 for this luxury. We laughed! Us girls. We all three went into the shower at the same time, finding three empty stalls and as we plopped our tokens into the coin operated machine and stepped in, we laughed! Hard! We stood under the rush of warm water and felt like pampered princesses and REALLY felt clean! We didn’t shave the entire trip. It was our pact. The feeling of wanting to now was SO incredibly overwhelming. It was part of the journey and being all in. We may be clean princesses but we are hairy! And so was our dude! His facial hair was reaching epic proportion! For me, this shower washed so much more than dirt away. It washed away my bad attitude from the days before, it washed away feelings of guilt over decisions I have made, expectation I’ve placed on myself and ones that have been put there by others, it washed away things I’ve been holding on to that needed desperately to be let go of, past hurts, pride issues, being judged, negative feelings, mistakes, times in my life that I fell apart, fear, the mess of the last year and the dirt of the past…..It all ran down the drain in a puddle.
Red’s Meadows is such a great place. Magical. The gathering place for all wanderers just outside of the beautiful Mammoth Lakes/Devil’s Postpile area. Full of wonderful, backpacking, happy people. It’s no wonder I loved it! (“My People” as my hubs refers to them) We quickly recognized some of our trail family. Those we’ve met along the way, and continue to see on the daily. Leap- frogging along, but always ending up camping alongside each night. Our Sylvanian’s whom we met WAY back on Glen Pass; two buddies hiking together, one of them barefoot. Tony, our dreadlocked farmer, who gave up an organic farm to hike the JMT, and of course the sweet 50th-anniversary couple, Brooks and Rita. We all filtered in little by little to the showers, the Mule House Cafe (that had the BEST cheeseburgers, fries, and fruit pie on the planet, ON THE PLANET!) and little general store that held our resupply. Interestingly enough, none of us rushed for our resupply. We opted instead for a shower, food, beer and hanging in the sunshine talking with other hikers…. in that order. We met Sam, a guy from the UK who is hiking the PCT. He is 3 weeks from finishing his 6-month journey and even though I have suffered some pretty rotten things out on this trail, I yearn for the opportunity to hike the PCT at some point. I was a little jealous. We talked to 2 women hikers from Maine that were having issues with sleeping bags. They were freezing at night and were asking opinions from everyone about new sacks that they were considering purchasing in Mammoth Lakes. We met a group of 4 women hiking together that were sharing a jar of queso dip and chips from the store. HEAVEN! We listened to the stories of fun and laughter, of animals, of heartbreak, of spiritual journeys, of blisters and sprained ankles, of sleeping COLD, of favorite and least favorite passes, the stories of their journeys and what brought them out here in the first place. I was happy to see so many solo-female hikers, and Ladies of the JMT (all of us wearing our blue bandanas on our pack to signify who we were) I was fascinated by these people and their stories and just wanted to take it all in! Sometimes I thought; man we must have a screw loose to do this, to want this, to enjoy (to some extent) the suffering of almost a month in the wilderness. The isolation, being dirty, being in the complete silence, the remoteness…but then I realized…Nah, it’s passion. It’s passion that drives this and every. single. one. of. us. has. a. story.

We picked up our resupplies from the little general store and sifted through the contents. I dug….WAY down to the bottom for my note, but quickly saw that Greg had added a few other goodies to this bucket. A can of Pringle’s (oh sweet Jesus) about 5 lbs of Starburst, blister care items (first aid) and a few bottles of Fire Ball. That man knows exactly what I need even from thousands of miles away and not hearing from me in over 10 days! This would be our last resupply. My last note. The last little bit of correspondence until we finish this out. It excited me as much as it grieved me. It was bittersweet in several aspects and as happy as I was to be finishing up this incredibly, epic experience, I was deeply SO saddened at the same time.

Wild Mama, just because you cried today doesn’t make you weak, Allow the tears to come and wash your spirit clean. You’ve come a long way baby! You’re at Red’s Meadows. Reflect on where you have come from and where you’re heading. Continue to celebrate all that lies within you. God has created in you and adventurer, a lover of nature and of stars and extraordinary views. This is why you’re out here. Breathe it all in. You are stronger than you ever give yourself credit. Keep it up, badass warrior! Thanks be to God. Remember, you planned well and are ready for the next few days to the finish!

I roared with laughter as I read this. Along with his funny note, and myriad of additional goodies, he had packed the baggies of my re-packaged dehydrated meals (yes RE-PACKAGED because weight is EVERYTHING when it’s on your back) and had renamed a few for me, which brought some great laughter around our little Jet Boils as we cooked dinner at camp.
We had to say goodbye to Red’s Meadows in the morning and start our way up Donahue Pass. It was hard leaving. We ate an AMAZING breakfast with WAAAAY too much coffee from a pot. Donahue is a big pass with 23-ish miles to the top. It’s long and gradual reaching 11,703 feet. We camped part way up around the Shadow Lake area. We had decided to bite this last section off in chunks. This was a gorgeous camp, with a waterfall right outside my tent door. (and for me, besides sunrises and sunsets, waterfalls rank HIGH up on the food chain of gorgeous-must-sees for me. I LOVE them) I climbed to the top of the falls and spent some alone time with God thanking Him for his creation, for His love for us through his creation. The beauty here and along this entire journey has been unsurpassed. I thanked Him for the opportunity of being out here, for His healing on my feet and body. I thanked Him for my hiking partners and keeping us all healthy (for the most part.) and safe. Out of the four of us, we had one common thread before going into this hike….our dude! K and I knew one another, but not to the depths that we did now. J and I met the day she, K and her hubs picked me up in San Bernardino to head to Lone Pine. Talk about really putting your faith into your hiking partners. So for us to make it this far with only a few small scrapes and bumps along the trail (so to say) I think I was in good company. I was so thankful for their underserved patience, and their inspiration, and kindness. I know we all had days where the raw emotion was high and we wanted to scream at one another, but in the end, we showed love, appreciation, devotion, fortitude, humility, mercy and grace. We showed friendship. I was so grateful for that. Complete and utter favor in the most extreme conditions Their compassion was incredible. I know full well that some days, probably most days, I was deserving of NONE of it!
That one day that J fell and K had to bandage her up with a Maxi-Pad!!
I took a deep breath as I climbed into my tent and into my mummy, the cascading sound of the falls outside the door making me dizzy with relaxation and tiredness. It had started to rain and we all retreated to our tents early. The daylight still lingered. I sat up and re-read the note from G and giggled. He has the greatest way of always making me and those around him laugh! He would love this spot. I cannot believe this journey is almost ending. I didn’t want it to. It had changed me in some pretty profound ways already. What would going home be like? What would matter to me that hadn’t before? What things would I cherish more and what would I no longer need or care to have? Would I want to go home and buy a Tiny House in the woods after living in Big Agnes for the past 3 1/2 weeks? What would I appreciate more and find unnecessary? What would food and water taste like? Different? Possibly. I do know the need to see my family was so colossal. To breathe them in deeply was all I wanted. That, and to lift and inhale the sweet, dirty, earthy, grass-smell of my puppy’s paws. (this is something her and I do several times a day) Those things that on a daily we become so accustomed to, that are so ordinary at times, that never will be again. They just can’t be.

Thankful For Positive Change

On this last day of 2018, as we slide toward the new year, it feels like a good time to say, “Hey, we’ve noticed a lot of improvements at Devil’s Lake State Park! Thank you!”.
For some years now it was feeling as if Devil’s Lake State Park was no longer the premier park it used to be. Devil’s Lake and it’s surrounding properties have been looking over-run, tired and well, a bit janky. Overuse, understaffing, underfunding and yes, a few folks just not caring, all came together to cause a huge slide in the quality of our park. And still, the visitor numbers kept rising because, after all, It’s “Devil’s Lake”. It wasn’t hard to see the changes over the years from crumbling trails and broken signs to dirty bathrooms and more. It was really getting depressing for those of us who have lived here all of our lives who have enjoyed the park on a nearly daily basis. Thing is, like the ole’ frog in the frying pan the changes happened slowly over years and for a time, seemed to go unnoticed. But thankfully folks started speaking up.
You see, the thing about Devil’s Lake (And I should add, Parfrey’s Glen and Pewit’s Nest State Natural Areas as well!) is that they are not simply tourist destinations, they are our heritage. They are places where every tree holds a memory to someone. Where each rock, mound and bedrock glade is a monument worthy of respect. They are a reminder of those who lived here before us. They are in some cases, spiritual sites. They are holders of family memories going back generations. They are our great-grandparents promise to our great-grandchildren. And of course, they are about conservation. A putting away of a few acres of land for not only us but for preservation and protection of native plants and animals that were here long before us. Sometimes I think we lose hold of that thread as time passes. We punch clocks, sell stickers and write reports. Ultimately it’s OK. It happens, but we also need to get back on track when we catch it.
In 2018, the park staff has been busy. In addition to the new boathouse and some added parking & campground improvements, trees are being cut, erosion damage is being fixed and broken signs are being replaced. Heck, with the help of outside groups and volunteers, even some of the worst sections of the East and West Bluff trails are beginning to be repaired! There are added lanes to move traffic faster at each entrance and automated “Iron Rangers” to actually collect fees, especially on those warm February weekends! I love the boulders & signage placed along the roads and parking lots to finally stop cars from pilling up on the grass. The upgraded bathrooms are a big improvement! They look great! I even saw rangers (or wardens, but that’s another story!!) out and about more this year and some even talking to pet owners about loose pets!! Awesome! All in all, I have to say, it seems that there has been a stronger emphasis on Wisconsin pride and getting things done at Devil’s Lake and it shows. Thank you!
Trail Repairs On DLK’s West Bluff
I am personally thankful for all the people who made phone calls, sent emails and filled out comment cards over the last couple of years whether addressing issues at the parks, Pewit’s Nest, Parfrey’s Glen or elsewhere. (The work on Pewit’s Nest is moving along nicely by the way!) I’m thankful to the government officials and state representatives who asked the right questions and then followed up. I’m thankful to the local press for asking good questions. Mostly, I’m thankful to the folks on the ground from volunteer organizations to individuals who’ve really shown up to do a lot of work in the last year or so. I’m thankful for the new wardens and rangers for their fresh outlooks and energy. Thank you to the trails crews. (West bluff! Awesome!) Thanks as well to the Devil’s Lake concessions folks for understanding that park experience and customer service ultimately are one-in-the-same. What’s more, I’m also thankful for the fresh faces at DNR parks on the state level who seem to really be dedicated to our parks despite the politics they often have to swim against. Oh and I have to assume someone, somewhere found more funding! Thank you.
OK, so of course it’s not all rainbows. There’s still work to do and not everyone is happy with every change or upgrade. I hear that. (Hey, I’d just like to get a few metal signs, a couple boards and some split rail for Parfrey’s Glen!) And with a new multi-million dollar gateway building in the works, there will be a lot to talk about over the coming months.
