Could you do headcanons of Beetlejuice and Delia bonding and hanging out together?
bro....this dynamic owns my HEART and i can’t thank u enough for inviting my endless rambling requesting it!
delia was the first adult in the house to actually hang out w beej after he returns (him and lydia sort out their misunderstandings on like, day one, but the adults are still wary)
delia is a firm believer in karma, though, so she doesn’t think there’s any point in holding a grudge, since the universe will decide what he deserves
it’s also in her nature to help people, and it hurts her to see beej looking so uncomfortable and out of place around the house when lydia is at school and it’s just her and the maitlands at home with him
so, about a week after he returns, delia quietly asks if he wants to decorate his bedroom (a spare room down the hall from hers and charles’, with just a bed, a dresser, and a night table)
he’s confused and EXTREMELY uncomfortable at first, because what the hell is “his room”? wasn’t that just a room they begrudgingly lended until he leaves? they didn’t actually want him in their space...did they?
delia is, of course, saddened by his response, but she also sees it as a prime Mom Opportunity (mopportunity, perhaps? im so sorry), so she sits him down and patiently explains that yes, the room is his, and she’d be happy to help him decorate to make it more “his energy...more aligned with his chakras”
it takes a while of convincing for him to actually believe her, but eventually they head up to his room, armed with cans of black, white, and green paint (the green was a compromise: he wanted actual mould on the walls, delia...did not)
as they’re painting the once-grey walls with beej’s trademark black and white stripes, delia begins nonchalantly asking him some questions: about his childhood, his life in the netherworld
beej is a natural oversharer, so she mostly just asks a question and lets him ramble for a while, taking it all in and filing away some key details in her mind
she realises that they’re actually more similar than once thought: they both once felt like outsiders, too odd to belong anywhere. she doesn’t tell him this, of course; doesn’t want to derail his enthusiastic rambling about his favourite kind of beetles to hang out with, battle for dominance, and eat, respectively
by that evening, they’re finished painting the walls black and white, and the can of green paint that beej is using to draw little bugs on the walls is almost empty, and they head down to eat a late dinner (god bless barbara for taking over the cooking and saving the household from awful interesting vegan recipes)
that’s far from the last time that they spend time together- they may be an unusual pair, but they really vibe, and it does both of them good to hang out
Exhibit A: once beej realizes that none of his wild sex stories that totally happened no really they did would ever top the kind of stuff delia got up to in her 20s, he actually starts having healthy discussions about sex with her
she’s the first person to bother explaining to him that his former “relationships” in the netherworld were abusive, and not what healthy relationships should look like
Exhibit B: she helps him learn to meditate! he has a hard time sitting still and not letting his racing thoughts overtake his mind, but delia’s patient, and proud beyond belief when he manages to silently meditate for a full minute
Exhibit C: he helps her connect to lydia better, and play more of a role in lydia’s life. he knows lydia well, and has personal experience with going through life without a mother figure, so he helps delia figure out what lydia needs and how to provide it
he also gravitates towards delia whenever he has questions that others would find obvious. she’s so nonjudgmental and gentle that he finds it hard to be embarrassed asking her “simple” questions
delia was actually the first person that he told that he couldn’t read! lydia had lent him a book on bugs and he was desperate to read it, but any word with more than three letters was greek to him, so he went to delia, quietly asking what the captions under the pictures said
she was the first to try to actually teach him to read (instead of just reading out loud to him), but she was juggling online unversity classes with being a pseudo-mom for a 15 year old goth who kept trying to “overthrow that damn bourgeoisie PTA” (resulting in more than a few meetings at her school)
adam, when he sees how overwhelmed delia is (despite how hard she tries to hide it), is more than happy to take the task on. all he’s had to occupy his time lately has been the town model, and sometimes a guy needs a break from painting miniature houses. plus, beej is more than eager to learn
that doesn’t stop beej and delia from hanging out whenever possible, though! he helps her (read: licks and eats the bowl when she’s done) bake vegan cookies, do housework, and they watch bad reality tv shows together whenever they get the chance. they both yell at the tv every time, terrifying charles whenever he has the misfortune of entering the family room during “Real Housewives of New Jersey”
after particularly stressful days or weeks, they sometimes do miniature “spa days” together at home. they do face masks (“i swear to gods lawrence beetlejuice deetz if you try to eat that face mask one more time i will send some bad vibes your way, mister!”), listen to chill music (“hey delia, i actually speak whale, and this particular ‘whale sounds’ CD is saying ‘you should totally let BJ eat his face mask’”), and paint each other’s nails
so yeah delia is absolutely beej’s mom and afterlife-coach thanks for coming to my ted talk!

——
Beneath your bodies was a large, tartan blanket with frayed edges, protecting your bodies from the slightly damp grass that laid amongst the park floor. There were several cushions from home resting randomly at different sections of the fabric, and two backpacks full to the brim with food. Yours, had a couple of homemade sandwiches, bottles of water and a plastic container of handmade chocolate chip cookies. Peter’s, on the other hand, had several packets of chocolate, two doughnuts, two cans of Coke, and two subs from Delmar’s, that today had cost him twenty dollars instead of ten.
Placed beside your two bags were a stack of activities - ranging from a pack of cards, to a kind of dodgy-looking board game, to your tablet with ‘Heads Up’ flashing on the screen. Right now, however, you were sat facing each other with a drawing pad in each of your hands - you had chosen to sit with your knees close to your chest, the pad resting on-top of your stomach while shielding your drawings from the brunette in-front of you. Peter had chosen a less secretive position at first, simply laying backwards on the blanket with the pad on the floor.
“Okay, first, I challenge you to draw...the Hulk!” You smiled widely, before grabbing one of two green markers from the selection on the patterned floor and furrowing your eyebrows as your pencil glided across the fresh piece of paper. He rolled his eyes playfully, knowing that the end result would likely not be very good, but continued regardless. He occasionally glanced at you to take in your expressions, each one making him smile to himself. Your face switched from ease, to frustration, to confusion and finally to a fairly content look with a light laugh, before looking to Peter to see if he was complete too.
He caught your gaze after a moment, dropping the now-lidded marker onto the blanket and nodding to you, before speaking. “It’s your turn to show first.” He reminded with a smile plastered onto his face - it had been like this since he first suggested the idea and you had replied with utter excitement and positivity towards it. You nodded in response to his comment, before dropping your pens also and turning the paper around - showing a green smudge with a rough pen outline of the beloved avenger drawn pretty terribly. “Okay, so maybe I shouldn’t have suggested a difficult one. I kind of forgot I was drawing it too.” You laughed, before flipping over the page, resting the pad on your legs again and looking towards your boyfriend that was ready to show his creation after seeing your fairly bad attempt. Waiting for your attention, he turned his pad upwards so you had a clear view on his scribbles - it made you smile, and laugh a little bit, before complimenting a feature and asking him for another prompt.
Over the next twenty minutes, you had drawn awful creations on ten pages over your sketchpads and broken three pencils by throwing them at each other and snapping the lead accidentally. His best had been a penguin, whilst you had drawn a pretty impressive flower - however, it was only ‘good’ because it was the same one you had doodled since the beginning of school, and he pretended he hadn’t seen it hundreds of times in your notebook during class. Instead he smiled, complimented you greatly and placed down all the coloured pens he had used thus far - before glancing at the one marker neither of you had touched - red. He grinned, picking it up and speaking confidently. “Let’s draw me, I mean, Spider-Man, me as Spider-Man, or just Spider-Man, whichever you prefer.” He uttered, and threw the other red marker in your general direction, except when he looked back up, his gaze became trapped onto you.
He watched how your face lit up at the suggestion, ounces of pride and excitement rushing up your face as you quickly gripped the marker in your hand and began thinking about what you would soon draw on the paper. He watched how your hands were warm, blood rushing through them freely in the summer air that passed by the both of you. He watched how your hair rested on your shoulders gently, getting the occasional strand blown by the gentle breeze, and he watched how your eyebrows fumbled together as you tried to perfectly convey your thoughts onto paper - except this didn’t work out very often. And finally, he watched your smile; he watched the corners of your lips remain permanently curled, and watched the natural redness of them light up consistently. He watched how big it was, how happy you were in the moment, and it was more than enough to plaster a grin onto his face, before flipping over to a fresh page of his sketch pad and getting to work.
His idea was solid, and he was frantically sprawling it out onto the paper that lay before him. However - his heart was beating just as frantically. Nerves lit up in his veins; and his hands shook slightly as he drew with the red and black markers - he knew that he wanted to tell you something, but he was still so worried if you would feel the same; but he decided he had to tell you, he couldn’t hide it any longer. That didn’t help, though - the last two months of your relationship had been the physical interpretation of perfect. He had finally worked up the courage to invite you out after Ned wouldn’t stop nagging him about it; there was constant, “Come on man, grow balls!”, “She’s gonna move on, if you don’t hurry up,” and “Dude, you’re Spider-Man, act like it!,” and he had eventually given in and waited by your locker until you had come out of class on a Thursday afternoon.
“Oh, um, hey Y/N!” He smiled nervously, but happiness was beginning to emerge throughout his face. “Hi, Peter. What can I do for you?” You shyly responded - in slight disbelief that the biggest crush of your school experience was now standing by your metal locker. You tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear, before looking up to give him your complete attention, encouraging him to continue with the reason he chose to come in the first place. “Well, uh, basically - I just wanted to know if, you, um, you maybe wanted to watch a film with me next week? Maybe we could get some food afterwards?” He suggested politely, but confidence grew as he continued to speak as he noticed your face brighten with each word that left his lips.
“I would love that, Peter.” You smiled widely, nodding your head a few times before looking back up to him. You watched Thor, Ragnarok that weekend, and while the film rolled, his hands somehow found his way into yours, intertwining gently as the movie continued to play.
Soon afterwards, you were spending most days together, many of them accompanied by Ned and MJ, but evenings were usually reserved for the company of just the two of you. There was a great friend-girlfriend balance, a big approval from Mary-Jane, acceptance of Peter’s secret (and a lot of excitement) and pure happiness between you - it was truly the physical interpretation of perfect, and he really, did not want to mess it up.
However, he chose to continue with the leap of faith - scribbling the eight words he desperately wished to reveal to you in the top left corner of his paper. After making final touches with his red marker, he dropped his tools and let out a sigh of relief, accompanied by a smile, as he looked at his drawing. As you glanced over, hearing the noise from his lips, you noticed his posture was completely different - instead, it was mirroring yours. His position was secretive, and you were unsure why, but you shrugged it off as perhaps he found the previous choice uncomfortable, and took a final glance at your paper before nodding towards him with a small smile on your lips. It was his turn to go first, and he was well aware of the fact, as he dropped his knees and looked at you with a large smile once he noticed your attention was captivated by him.
He slowly turned his sketch-pad around, gripping the sides tightly as he did, being very careful not to drop the creation onto the floor, where it could potentially be smudged. Your eyes dropped to the paper that he was showing, waiting for the full image to be revealed - your hands tucked into your lap as your fingers fumbled together - they quickly froze, though, once the doodle from your boyfriend was in full view of your gaze. A drawing of your beloved boyfriend in his suit grazed majority of the page, but the top corner was the most important to you, as the sentence, “I think I’m falling in love with you,” rested, sunken into the pad. Your breath hitched a little bit, your eyebrows raising slightly as your grin grew further, if that was even possible.
Your eyes jumped to his after you had fully taken in the image that lay before you; happiness beaming out of yours and matching a similar reaction in his. You placed your sketch-pad beside you, before pushing yourself up onto your knees and rushing over to the boy sat in-front of you, and pushing your lips to his with a fair bit of force. Your lips worked in motion with his, him kissing back with equal force and passion as his free hand moved to the back of your neck. You pulled back gently, looking at him innocently as your lips parted, a smile still plastered across both of your faces.
You took his sketch-pad from his hands slowly, gripping it gently with yours as you looked at it again, falling for the drawing just like you had fallen for him as words finally escaped your lips - Peter watching you consistently, waiting for a positive response from you.
“I think I’m falling in love with you, too.”

Heres a thing abt my ocs
While izzy is alive, masa begins to compose a song for her, and its one of her best works yet, and even though its not done she lets izzy hear it and izzy a d o r e s it, and masa cant wait to perfect the piece so that she can share her love of izzy to everyone else who hears it.
But izzy dies before masa is anywhere close to finishing it, and it sits at the back of masas mind for years bc she cant bring herself to touch it. But when eliza comes into her life and masa sees her honoring her deceased through music, she decides to pick it back up, kinda to work her way through her grief
And she doesnt rly put toooo much effort into it, shes busy and wants to focus on her newer music more. But the song is decent. Its tune hasnt rly changed too much but its a lot more flowy and smooth or w/e. And she gets stuck on it for a few months, and it gets on her nerves and she decides to leave it alone again. And she dies. And when she sees izzy again, she feels that familiar jolt of electricity across her skin and her heart is fluttering in her chest and shes taken sO aback bc over the years shed kinda forget juuust how izzy made her feel- alive and about to fucking explode with love and adoration
And after she attends the pin ball and is squirreled away into the heart of the palace to keep her safe from the the publics prying eyes, shes horribly lonely. The empress had been by her side every moment for days but she way away on business and masa has no one with her, except the maids, but they dont linger around for too much. Shes given anything she asks for to keep her entertained, so she asks for a violin. And with the reignited flame in her heart she begins to work on izzys song again, and it comes out with an incredible ease and grace, and she goes over it again and again until its /perfect/ and she hasnt been this excited about music in so long
And masa requests one of the empresses’ knights to escort her out in the gardens, hoping that it’ll be izzy that joins her, but its not. She decides to go along anyway, and begins to let shannon hear the piece but stops half way when she realizes shannon is humming the tune ahead of her. Shes bewildered and embarrassed until shannon tells her they recognize the tune bc its izzys favorite thing to hum in the whole world
Thats not the gayest part,
Masas touched that izzy had held onto the memory of that rough tune to this day and begins to play the song again. When she finishes, she looks up to find the empress, ethereal as ever, standing a few yards away. Shannon asks if shed been looking for them and the empress replies “I thought i heard masa calling for me, and i found myself here”
Fast forward to after masa finds out that izzy is the empress, after their plan has been set and masa is back in the mortal realm, after eliza finds the information shed been looking for and when Ahris plan to take over both the soul and mortal realm starts unfurling.
Up to this point the part of izzy that had stayed in the soul realm had been unwillingly housing Ahri and occasionally ahris presence would drive izzy into these excruciatingly painful seizure like episodes where shed lash out at everything around her (smth that masas touch alone was able to subdue)
And i think ive mentioned this before but the reason that ahri is the way she IS, is bc the GK came into direct contact w her and accidentally granted her immense power, and ahri had been drawing up power from her still loyal subjects in all realms and had kept it in reserves, not even using it the first time izzy entered the empire bc shes a smart cookie. And w this Ridiculous amount of power shes able to overlap?? All three realms. And masa and eliza can seeee izzy writhing in pain bc ahri is trying to fully possess her, and izzy lashes out at eliza for getting too close and eliza pierces straight through her core bc she knows that the only way to separate a possession is to kill the host. So ahri is stripped from izzys body, leaving izzy to slowly and painfully Fade, and masa knew that smth like this was supposed to happen to bring izzy and eliza together into one again but its still dreadful and shes cradling her beloved in her arms and urging eliza to act quickly but eliza is frozen in devastation bc she only Just got her memories back and its still trying to catch up to her and she can barely even THINK
And izzy realizes that shes fading far too slowly and that if she speeds the process up she just. Be absorbed into eliza and they can start kicking ass. So she urges masa to strike through her with her sword and masas in tears and doesnt want to hurt her but goes through it for the greater good (which. Is kind of a foil to how gita and her beloved created their soulmateship lol)
And eliza realizes whats happening as masa cuts through izzy and she lunges toward her other half and they are submerged in a tower of pitch black flames and untouchable. And masa has no idea what the Fuck is going on anymore. The separating of souls is a relatively simple process, w v lil fanfare, but the joining of two soul parts is Loud and Messy, because of the different experiences each part has gone through trying to overlap and become one, and these two bitches have over 20 Years worth in memories to overlap so its Particularly Ugly.
And masa reaches in, in an attempt to pull her beloved out and she can feel the flames blistering her skin and she has to pull back bc of how god awful it hurts and she watches her skin heal as she pulls it out of the fire and she doesnt know what to do and shes screaming at the top of her lungs and ri and momo have to pull her out of harms way bc now that ahris out and about shes just. Fuckin shit UP, and all her followers are wreaking havoc in the overlapping realms and masa would have had her head torn off had it not been for her and izzys reflections. And they pull her away to safety, behind a barrier the empire’s guard had created inside a high school’s auditorium and masa is kicking and flailing the whole way there bc she neeeeds to reach izzy somehow and help her through this. And she sees a discarded violin and remembers that the empress had been drawn to her from across the palace grounds and decides trying to call her this way is worth a shot
Anyway, izzy feels like shes being ripped apart at the seams and shes surrounded by blinding white light And she can hear the GK in her ears, promising power beyond her wildest dreams so she can finally destroy ahri once and for all- but in return izzy herself would cease to exist in all realms. And izzy accepts bc shes desperate to end ahris terror and says that as an Eris her only reason to exist is to protect souls and their realm from danger and if this is what she needs to do to bring about peace then so be it.
And this whole time izzy feels like shes being pulled in one direction but she ignores it. She reaches out a hand toward the GK and feels a warm hand in her own and she feels like shes been struck by lightning (which. She rly has experienced lmao) and when she opens her eyes she can see the tower of flames dissipating and shes holding onto masas outstretched hand, and she can hear in her memories, the song masa had written for her, calling out to her crystal clear. And with masas hand in hers, she feels more powerful than she ever has before, and knows that it isnt bc the GK granted her any power, bc masa had reached her first and the strength of masa and her love would be enough to Kick some Demon Ass

If not my surname or my husband’s, could we call our child after a New Zealand volcano?
Franki Cookney and her husband didnt much like each others surnames, so now theyre having a baby theyve are determined to pick a new one
When my husband, Rob, and I wedded last year, the question of what to do about our surnames barely entered our debates. We are both novelists, so our epithets are on every piece of work we do. That we would retain our own seemed a rendered. There was just one niggling skepticism. What would happen if “were having” children?
I had always thought that we would just put both our calls on birth certificates certification, but I knew this didnt quite resolve the problem. Whose refer would go first? And which reputation would end up being used?
We could use a double-barrel figure, but didnt experience our surnames, Cookney and Davies, gave themselves to hyphenation. Whichever prescribe you choose, the result is clunky and we were reluctant to saddle a child with it.
We could have just choice whichever call resounded best with our newborn first name. But in that scenario, one parent culminates up not sharing a surname with their child and neither of us wanted that. Plus, Id discovered too many tales of parents being agreed upon at airfield defence because the reputations on their passports didnt competition that of their children.
The conventional option of taking my husbands surname was never on the table. Fairly apart from the feminist principle of not wanting to abdicate my identity for his, I wasnt keen on the name. Rob supported this and was by no means offended. The disturbance was, he wasnt a fan of my mention either. Its just a little bit ponderous, he said. Its almost Cockney but not quite. Youre constantly having to spell it out. We looked at our mothers maiden calls and our grandparents names but always objective up back in the same lieu, feeling that it wasnt equal, that picking one area of their own families over another wasnt fair.
We hit on the idea of taking a new epithet about a year ago when before our wed we went to write our wills. As we chitchatted to one of the attorneys, it transpired that he and his wife had done exactly this. Theres a fair fleck of admin, but its good, it drives, he said , nod decisively. Suddenly, it didnt seem so outlandish. This wasnt some childish rebellion or bohemian pretentiousness, this was something solicitors did!
We mooted it with acquaintances, who were largely unfazed. What name will you go for? was the thing they were most curious about. Good inquiry. Could we compound the messages of our mentions and create something new, we wondered. Lists were acquired: Dents, Cave, Devine, Kinsey, Dacovnicks Cookies? None of them quite hit the mark.
As our bridal outlined nearer, we set the mention competition on a back burner. But when I became pregnant three months later, we were forced to look at the situation afresh and decided to change tack. How about a plaza? I proposed. Somewhere weve inspected that we adored. A backpacking stint before we got married had left us with plenty to choose from but most sounded jolly ludicrous when attributed to a couple of ordinary Brits. Rob and Franki Tongariro owned any particular vigor, but appointing yourself after a New Zealand volcano would be ridiculous. And Zhangjiajie might invoke storages of dazzling Chinese mountains, but imagine having to incantation it every time you booked a hair appointment or called your internet provider. For a while Salento and Chaltn were on the register, after places available in Colombia and Argentina. But we werent convinced we could pull off the certainly Latino-sounding former and believed the latter would result in a lifetime of chastising people who declared it Charlton.
Then Rob said, What about Stone Town? The beautiful old town of Zanzibar City is where he had asked me to marry him. It instant appeared right. Stone was straightforward but important. It voiced good with both our given name and after a few weeks of trying it on with other epithets would work well with almost anything we chose for our child. It was perfect: a solid mention( with possibilities for puns that was not failed on us) that felt like a constructive solution to our trouble. We would prevent our original surnames for study and adopt this new last name for our personal lives.
By law, all you need to do to change your reputation is, well, remained unchanged. Simply adopting and using your brand-new name is enough. Modernizing your accounts and enters, nonetheless, requires a document of proof such as a wedding certificate or, in such cases, a deed poll. “Were not receiving” official way of acquiring a deed referendum. You can write one yourself applying free templates from the internet, but paucity of clarity about the relevant procedures answers in some institutions demanding an original certificate despite the fact that no such event subsists. You can either fight it out or you can do what we did and pay 15 -2 0 for a company such as the Deed Poll Office to draw up the note on your behalf and reproduce and stomp it on watermarked paper. Returned the listing of bodies and organisations you have to notify and the potential contentions over what constitutes an original certification, this seemed a reasonable compromise.
Perhaps it was naive, but we didnt expect to meet with fight. Uncertainty, perhaps. Intrigue, for sure. When it came to getting married, we had ditched almost every tradition running, prohibiting the union itself, and no one had interrogated us. Surely this too would be seen as a modern update on an outdated tradition. But where reference is announced our decision to our families, the reaction was mixed.

While they understood our quandary, the common restraint was that the child would lose the connection to its family history. Try as I might, I cant know what this is. To me, family history travels far deeper than ones refer. Its in the way we live, our values, the gumption and shared suffer passed down through generations. It is part of the storytelling our parents did and its in the narrations we, more, will tell and the beliefs we will share.
Our roots are not in our appoints, they are in our centers. My grandmother, whose surname was Jones, is important to me not because of her figure but because of her passion. My great-grandmother, a midwife I never even converged, let alone shared a reputation with, forms a part of my appreciation of identity. Why? Because of the space my own mother talks about her, because of the pictures she has decorated in my head of that life, that kinfolk, that time.
Interestingly, the appoint itself has also proved a sticking point, with a few people commenting that its abiding. Youre doing this really unusual thing but youve picked a really everyday mention, said one colleague, as though by doing something different “weve been” obliged to go the whole hog and announce ourselves Rob and Franki Thundercats.
In fact, the accessibility of the appoint was something we thought would be used sell the idea. It turns out “were in” naive there, too. My baby, a former primary school teacher, insisted that someone called Stone would be taunted. Another relative describing him as a dead weight of a name.
In my experience, girls will come up with nicknames no matter what. I spent much of my school years known as Franki Cookie while my given name was often elongated to Frankenstein, Frankincense or Frankfurter.
Never tell people your reputation picks in advance, admonished one acquaintance( too late ). Its as if telling parties in advance is inviting a talk or consultation!
While my familys concerns patently matter to me, I suppose she might be right. Eventually, this is our decision, based on our requirements, and I hope they will come to see it as a practical and positive step , not an irresponsible one.
Its almost impossible to get everyone on board, adviser another friend, who changed her surname by deed ballot in 2004. The hypothesi upset my granny but my dad, her son, understood. When I married my husband, he took my figure. Im still not sure two brothers was 100% behind us, but when we had our first son, he was the first to be born into our empire. Im so excited that we are the first in our tree!
This is exactly how I seem. I adoration the idea that our child will be born into this new, specially opted and carefully thought-out family name. And if the working day he or she decides to change it either to something new or to one of our old family name we will fully support that.
Even when you change names, lineage can still be traced and, if nothing else, I like to think we will be seemed back on as the ones who tried something new; who instead of obliging do with an unsatisfactory statu, belief creatively about how to solve it. Thats a family bequest Im joyous with.

If not my surname or my husband’s, could we call our child after a New Zealand volcano?
Franki Cookney and her husband didnt much like each others surnames, so now theyre having a baby theyve decided to pick a new one
When my husband, Rob, and I wedded last year, the question of what to do about our surnames scarcely enrolled our debates. We are both novelists, so our mentions are on every piece of work we do. That we would obstruct our own seemed a demonstrated. There was just one niggling incredulity. What would arise if “were having” children?
I had always had considered that we would just stay both our appoints on the birth certification, but I knew this didnt quite solve the problem. Whose refer would go first? And which refer would end up being used?
We could use a double-barrel call, but didnt feel our surnames, Cookney and Davies, gave themselves to hyphenation. Whichever ordering you choose, the result is clunky and we were reluctant to saddle small children with it.
We could have just picked whichever name reverberated best with our babe first name. But in that scenario, one mother resolves up not sharing a surname with their child and neither of us required that. Plus, Id heard too many fables of mothers being stopped at airport defence because the names on their passports didnt match that of their children.
The conventional option of taking my husbands surname was never on the table. Fairly apart from the feminist principle of not wanting to relinquish my identity for his, I wasnt keen on the figure. Rob supported this and was by no means offended. The fus was, he wasnt a fan of my refer either. Its merely a little bit unwieldy, he enunciated. Its almost Cockney but not quite. Youre forever having to spell it out. We looked at our mothers maiden names and our grandparents names but always pointed up back in the same lieu, feeling that it wasnt equal, that picking one line-up of the family over another wasnt fair.
We hit on the idea of taking a new name about a year ago when before our wedding we went to write our wills. As we chitchatted to one of the attorneys, it transpired that he and his wife had done precisely this. Theres a fair bit of admin, but its good, it toils, he did , nodding decisively. Abruptly, it didnt seem so preposterous. This wasnt some foolish rebellion or bohemian pretentiousness, this was something advocates did!
We mooted it with sidekicks, who were largely unfazed. What identify will you go for? was the thing they were most strange about. Good question. Could we combine the letters of our appoints and cause something new, we meditated. Directories were constructed: Nicks, Cave, Devine, Kinsey, Dacovnicks Cookies? Nothing of them quite hit the mark.
As our marry attracted nearer, we made the mention tournament on a back burner. But when I became pregnant three months later, we were forced to look at the situation anew and decided to change tacking. How about a target? I suggested. Somewhere weve visited that we desired. A backpacking stint before we got married had left us with batch to choose from but most sounded reasonably strange when attached to a couple of everyday Brits. Rob and Franki Tongariro possessed a certain vitality, but appointing yourself after a New Zealand volcano would be ridiculous. And Zhangjiajie might conjure recollections of spectacular Chinese mountains, but imagine having to sorcery it every time you booked a hair appointment or called your internet provider. For a while Salento and Chaltn were on the list, after places in Colombia and Argentina. But we werent convinced we are to be able pull off the undoubtedly Latino-sounding former and believed the latter would lead to a lifetime of redressing people who pronounced it Charlton.
Then Rob added, What about Stone Town? The beautiful old-fashioned township of Zanzibar City is where he had asked me to marry him. It instantly experienced right. Stone was straightforward but important. It resounded good with both our first names and after a few weeks of trying it on with other identifies would work well with almost anything we decide to for our newborn. It was perfect: a solid call( with a possibilities for pun “thats really not” lost on us) that felt like a constructive solution to our question. We would maintain our original surnames for act and accept this new family name for our personal lives.
By law, all you need to do to change your figure is, well, change it. Simply adopting and using your new figure is enough. Informing your accountings and enters, nonetheless, requires a document of proof such as a union certificate or, in such cases, a deed poll. “Were not receiving” official style of acquiring a deed poll. You can write one yourself employing free templates from the internet, but lack of lucidity about the process ensues in some institutions challenging an original credential despite the fact that no such thing prevails. You can either fight it out or you can do what we did and offer 15 -2 0 for a company such as the Deed Poll Office to draw up the letter on your behalf and print and stamp it on watermarked newspaper. Passed the list of bodies and organisations you have to notify and the health risks arguments over what constitutes an original credential, this seemed a reasonable compromise.
Perhaps “its been” naive, but we didnt expect to meet with defiance. Uncertainty, perhaps. Intrigue, for sure. When it came to getting married, we had ditched virtually every institution proceeding, barring the wedlock itself, and no one had wondered us. Surely this too would be seen as a modern update on an outdated custom-made. But where reference is announced our decided not to our families, the reaction was mixed.

If not my surname or my husband’s, could we call most children after a New Zealand volcano?
Franki Cookney and her husband didnt much like each others surnames, so now theyre having a baby theyve are determined to pick a brand-new one
When my husband, Rob, and I marriage last year, the question of what to do about our surnames just recruited our discussions. We are both novelists, so our mentions are on every piece of work we do. That we would preserve our own seemed a generated. There was just one niggling incredulity. What would happen if “were having” infants?
I had always thought that we would just stick both our refers on birth certificates certification, but I knew this didnt quite resolve the problem. Whose refer would go first? And which appoint would end up being used?
We could use a double-barrel name, but didnt seem our surnames, Cookney and Davies, lent themselves to hyphenation. Whichever order you have selected, the result is clunky and we were reluctant to saddle a child with it.
We could have just elected whichever identify resounded best with our baby given name. But in that scenario, one mother culminates up not sharing a surname with their child and neither of us missed that. Plus, Id listened too many fables of mothers being stopped at airport security because the names on their passports didnt equal that of their children.
The traditional option of taking my husbands surname was never on the table. Fairly apart from the feminist principle of not was intended to abdicate my identity for his, I wasnt keen on the reputation. Rob supported this and was by no means offended. The disturbance was, he wasnt a fan of my appoint either. Its precisely a bit ponderous, he mentioned. Its virtually Cockney but not quite. Youre forever having to spell it out. We looked at our mothers maiden refers and our grandparents names but always resolved up back in the same lieu, feeling that it wasnt equal, that picking one area of the family over another wasnt fair.
We hit on the idea of taking a brand-new epithet about a year ago when before our wed we went to write our wills. As we chitchatted to one of the attorneys, it transpired that he and his wife had done precisely this. Theres a fair fleck of admin, but its good, it drives, he articulated , nodding decisively. Unexpectedly, it didnt seem so preposterous. This wasnt some childish resistance or bohemian pretentiousness, this was something advocates did!
We mooted it with friends, who were largely unfazed. What call will you go for? was the thing they were most strange about. Good interrogation. Could we combine the messages of our figures and create something new, we pondered. Inventories were become: Nicks, Cave, Devine, Kinsey, Dacovnicks Cookies? Nothing of them quite hit the mark.
As our wed gleaned nearer, we put the reputation competition on a back burner. But when I became pregnant three months later, “were in” forced to look at the situation anew and decided to change tack. How about a region? I indicated. Somewhere weve visited that we adoration. A backpacking stint before we got married had left us with slew to choose from but most sounded fairly ludicrous when attached to a couple of ordinary Brits. Rob and Franki Tongariro owned any particular sparkle, but naming yourself after a New Zealand volcano would be ridiculous. And Zhangjiajie might create reminiscences of fantastic Chinese mountains, but imagine having to sorcery it every time you booked a “hairs-breadth” appointment or called your internet provider. For a while Salento and Chaltn were on the roster, after places in Colombia and Argentina. But we werent convinced we are to be able pull off the certainly Latino-sounding former and suspected the latter would lead to a lifetime of correcting people who enunciated it Charlton.
Then Rob mentioned, What about Stone Town? The beautiful old-fashioned municipality of Zanzibar City is where he had asked me to marry him. It instant appeared right. Stone was straightforward but important. It announced good with both our first names and after a few weeks of trying it on with other identifies would work well with almost anything we decide to for our newborn. It was perfect: a solid call( with possibilities for puns that was not lost on us) that felt like a constructive solution to our trouble. We would preserve our original surnames for production and choose this new last name for our personal lives.
By law, all you need to do to change your identify is, well, remained unchanged. Simply adopting and using your brand-new refer is enough. Revising your accountings and preserves, nonetheless, requires a document of proof such as a marriage credential or, in our case, a deed canvas. There is no official way of acquiring a deed ballot. You can write one yourself exploiting free templates from the internet, but lack of clarity about the process develops in some institutions asking an original credential despite the fact that no such event exists. You can either fight it out or you can do which is something we did and offer 15 -2 0 for a company such as the Deed Poll Office to draw up the character on your behalf and publish and emboss it on watermarked article. While they understood our situation, the common refrain was that the child would lose the connection to its family history. Try as I might, I cant understand this. To me, family history becomes far deeper than ones call. Its in accordance with the rules “were living”, our values, the knowledge and shared event passed down through generations. Our roots are not in our refers, they are in our centres. My grandmother, whose surname was Jones, is important to me not because of her refer but because of her desire. My great-grandmother, a midwife I never even assembled, let alone shared a appoint with, forms a part of my sense of identity. Why? Because of the space my “mothers ” talks about her, because of the pictures she has coated in my head of that life, that lineage, that time.
Interestingly, the appoint itself has also supported a sticking point, with a few people commenting that its accepting. Youre doing this really unusual thing but youve picked a really ordinary call, said one colleague, as though by doing something different we are obliged to go the whole hog and call ourselves Rob and Franki Thundercats.
In fact, the accessibility of the figure was something we reckoned would help us sell the idea. It turns out “were in” naive there, too. My mom, a former primary school teacher, insisted that someone called Stone would be pestered. Another relative describing him as a dead weight of a name.
In my experience, girls will come up with nicknames no matter what. I expended much of my school years known as Franki Cookie while my given name was regularly elongated to Frankenstein, Frankincense or Frankfurter.
Never tell people your figure picks in advance, advised one sidekick( too late ). Its as if telling beings in advance is inviting a talk or consultation!
While my familys looks undoubtedly are important for me, I suppose she might be right. Ultimately, this is our decision, based on our wants, and I hope they will come to see it as a practical and positive move , not an irresponsible one.
