When we were initiated in 1970, we were taught that "only a witch can make a witch". In other words, the only way to become a witch was to be initiated by another witch […] We still believe that it is a good rule to follow wherever possible, because it means that a new witch starts his or her training under the guidance of an experienced initiator, and usually as a member of an existing coven. Mistakes are less hazardous, misunderstandings are more quickly cleared up, and the learning process is much quicker. Anything is better learned by apprenticeship than by lone study.

Hi all,
Welcome to the last part of my 2024 altar tour! 4/4
What a year it has been! I have learned so much and made so many new friends! My altar has always been a reflection of my psyche, seeing it’s beauty reminds me of the beauty that exists within me. :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this is my final little work space where I do pendulum magick and tarot readings. There is a devotional mug to Lord Lucifer which I use for our morning coffee chats. There is also Lucifer’s devotional dragon statue, as well as the dual scrying mirror for him and Faviel.
There is a normal mirror and a statue of a pharaoh’s tomb. The board which the flowers and offerings are placed on dawns Faviel’s sigil and candle. To Faviel I have offered a palm stone, flowers, an acorn, smoky quartz, some black earrings, and some grubs.
Beside him is my pendulum in a selenite charging bowl along with my pendulum mat.
The black and white image you see was a piece of art I made for Archangel Jophiel after he gifted me a vision a year or so ago. I use it whenever I’m reaching out to him.
Tumblr media
Beneath my altar is some space for storage where I keep my larger cauldron, mortar and pestle, larger candles, etc. There is also my stand where I keep my broom, fire poker, and shovel. My witch broom is wrapped in a protective seal. I use it to sweep ash from my prayer mat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally, here are a few of the books I have in my collection that have greatly greatly aided me in my craft. Remember to do your research my dears!

The Book of Destinies- Jane Struthers

The Power of Birthdays Stars and Numbers- Saffi Crawford and Geraldine Sullivan
The Witches’ Goddess- Janet and Stewart Farrar
The Witches’ God- Janet and Stewart Farrar
•••
I wanted to end this tour off with my reading material because I want to emphasize how important it is to understand that “magick” is not just “stuff”.
I really enjoy all of my magical tools and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having and wanting pretty things or an aesthetically pleasing altar. In fact I believe aesthetic and care are acts of love in themselves. Don’t ever let someone shame you for wanting to decorate and indulge in the aesthetics of your craft.
But please do remember that our greatest magical tool is our minds, our senses, and our experiences- our brains. Remember to read read read lots of material from many different sources. Contemplate honestly on everything you read, hear and experience. Do not take everything you believe today as a fact, do not box yourself in to anything. (Maybe that’s the Luciferian in me speaking lol)
Learn how to do magick alone, without any tools. My magick is not my stuff, although my stuff greatly aids me in my magick. Does that make sense?
Thank you so much for reading! I look forward to growing and learning so much more this year! :)
Blessed be!

Your post about Bret Frarrar is finally the boost I needed to get a copy of it but I also wonder if you read Mary Stewart's The Ivy Tree, which is pretty overtly a genderswapped take on Bret Frarrar? It's one of my favourites of Stewart's romantic suspense novels.
You had me at "genderswapped take on Brat Farrar"!
...I haven't read it, no, though I do like Stewart's prose and have read at least one of her romantic suspense novels (I think more, but Nine Coaches Waiting is the one I remember best from my mother's bookshelves.)

Glad's Book List
I wrote a post recently about my history (normally I'd link it but I don't want to be narcissistic), and realized that I've read a fair few occult books over the years. So here's the list; I'll keep updating it as I find more books in my various libraries and book stashes.
Quick note before getting into this list--not everything I've read will make it. Just the stuff I read and recommend others parse through. For example, I have intentionally omitted my studies in Kabbalah to discourage others from unintentionally appropriating.
But by "parse through", I truly mean that. My path has meandered through several schools of thought and wandered into appropriative territory at times (I constantly strive to correct any appropriation in my practice that gets brought to my attention). Maybe about 20% of each book makes it into my current path.

Uneducated: A Question for Modern Witches on Gender
So, hi. I'm learning about the practices and beliefs of Wiccanism as an intellectual curiosity. To do this, I've begun by reading "A Witch's Bible," written by Janet and Stewart Farrar. As far as I know, this is a relatively good source outlining "Gardnerian Wiccanism," which seems to be one of the most popular contemporary understandings of Wicca and Neo-Paganism (as far as I know? Forgive my ignorance, if I am mistaken).
As I read it, I have thus far found it to be a very illuminating read, that goes in depth on the largely progressive, naturalistic, and idealistic belief systems of the "modern" witch. However, as good a source as this book may be, there is one repeated aspect that feels dated by today's discourse-- the concept of gender, and how this topic is discussed.
Now, this book's major components were written in 1981 and 1984, then compiled into a single manual in 1996(?), so it's obviously somewhat dated. We've had four decades of growing social progress since.
In brief, let me explain my understandings thus far, to see if I am on the right track in following this book's vision of Wicca: there is a huge emphasis on "polarity," i.e. opposites. This includes man and woman, written in very binary black/white terminology. This book states that man and woman's nature is inherently different (but equal) on a level beyond physical. Women have a "cyclic nature" due to ovulation and menstruation; whereas men have a "linear nature." Women are afforded more psychic ability because they have the "gifts of the goddess," and can be a symbolic vessel and avatar for the Goddess. However they can also serve as the vessel for the God, if there is no man able to do so during a Sabbat gathering, ritual, or event. On the flipside, a man can only ever be a vessel for the God-- never the Goddess. The domain of Goddess is strictly a role afforded to the high priestess and women in an "ideal" Gardnerian coven structure. (Again, not stating that this IS 100% the case, just explaining how I've understood it thus far.)
So the question burning in my mind is simply this: how have Wiccan beliefs and communities adapted and changed in their thought processes on the relation between sex and gender, considering we live in an age where the topic is now more mainstream than ever? What are the psychic and spiritual roles of man and woman in modern day, considering the newfound greater questioning of what it even means to be "man" or "woman" in the first place?
To anyone in those communities who sees my long winded wall of text in the tags of your community and you actually read it, I hope you'll forgive my intrusion. I don't mean to espouse my ignorance of your religious beliefs. On the contrary, I find many of them to be engaging and very beautiful. However, I consider myself a pretty strong pro-trans ally in the LGBTQ+ community, and I just became too curious on the thoughts and attitudes of modern witches on the subject. I know there are a lot of trans people who are in wicca and neo-pagan circles, so I hope you wouldn't mind my probing. And while I could Google this topic, I feel an appeal to those in the community directly would be more engaging and personal.

Do you recommend Thea Sabine, Thorn Mooney, or Janet & Stewart Farrar as legit sources for learning wicca? I'm new to the craft
So I've never read any of Thea Sabin's stuff, so I don't have a strong opinion there.
I also have never been fond of the Farrars -- and whether or not their views later evolved, their work as published falls into the gender essentialist camp. And sometimes kinda homophobic.
I don't... I'm not a fan.
I know some of my friends don't like Thorn Mooney, and I don't always agree with her -- but her knowledge of Wicca is solid. She's going to come from a British Traditional Wiccan perspective, so keep that in mind while looking at her work.

Hora do Estudo! E do conselho!
