Hi Jess, I have a Karluk question for you! What exactly was wrong with the expedition's supply of pemmican? Wikipedia says Stefansson said it was a lack of fat, but Niven's book describes the disease as coming from too much fat and protein. Are there any clear answers as to what actually made it faulty?
Hi! This is a great question, and I wanted to do a little research before I responded to make sure I got the details right.
First, what exactly is pemmican? It's one of the staple foods of polar exploration, a nutritionally balanced combination of dried meat, fat, and sometimes a small amount of carbohydrates. It's easy to transport, calorie dense, can be formulated to feed men or dogs, and doesn't spoil easily, making it ideal for long voyages. Indigenous peoples were making and using pemmican for centuries before the Europeans "discovered" it.
With this in mind, I looked at the two competing claims you mentioned. First, I found the citation in the Wikipedia article, and since I have Stef's (ridiculous) book The Friendly Arctic, I double checked it. The quote is accurate, but there's some missing context. In this passage, he was actually talking about pemmican that was specifically formulated for dogs! There was dog pemmican and man pemmican (and confusingly enough, the Karluk also had 2 different kinds of man pemmican-- more on that later). In the passage below you can see that Stef is complaining about the dog pemmican being deficient in fat, and how he claims it affected dog performance.
(In general, though, it's important to note that Stef had a... tenuous relationship with the truth. I would fact check anything he said as a matter of principle.)
To examine Niven's claim, I called in the big guns, by which I mean I consulted with an actual expert with their Ph.D. in all things polar and a special interest in Stef's shenanigans! They are on tumblr, but I'm not sure if they're OK being tagged, so I will just thank them anonymously for their help 🥰 Anyway, between the two of us, we were unable to find any studies specifically examining the relationship between pemmican (faulty or otherwise) and nephritis, a kidney disease diagnosed by the doctor who examined the Karluk survivors. To the best of our knowledge, no testing was ever done on the bodies of the deceased, but since the symptoms of the survivors lined up with the symptoms of nephritis, there's no compelling reason to doubt this diagnosis.
So how do we know the pemmican caused the nephritis? Officially, we don't! However, we have a LOT of evidence indicating that it did. Niven does a great job documenting all of this in The Ice Master. We know that people have been surviving on pemmican in the Arctic for centuries without developing nephritis. We know that in order to be a nutritionally balanced survival food, pemmican needs to have a specific ratio of protein to fat. We know that Stef did not personally oversee the production of his pemmican, as some previous expedition leaders had done (which is especially hilarious considering that later in his career he would conduct some disastrous experiments involving feeding pemmican to United States troops, so clearly he had an interest in the stuff). We know he did not submit it to purity testing to ensure that it was safe and nutritionally balanced because he was in too much of a hurry. We know that the men strongly preferred the Hudson's Bay brand of pemmican over the Underwood brand because the Underwood brand made them ill, and they reached a point where they couldn't choke down any more of it, even though they were starving. We know that high fat and/or protein diets without carbohydrates can be very bad for your kidneys, especially if you have other preexisting medical conditions (like, for example, a weakened immune system due to exposure and starvation and stress).
I am not a doctor and I do not play one on the Internet, but if I had to guess, I would say there was a problem with the Underwood pemmican, most likely that the fat to protein ratio was off or it was somehow contaminated. This is also the conclusion that Niven reached, and her research for this book was impeccable, so I have no reason to doubt her! We will, of course, never know with complete certainty what caused the nephritis, but the men clearly thought it was the pemmican, and I believe them.
I'm sure this is WAY more than you ever wanted to know about pemmican, but if you want to know more, I can hook you up with some more sources! sorting through the prequel i started writing for the bdsm romcom novel
“You didn’t drop out of law school because Stephen broke up with you, did you?” Stef asks, hands on her hips, her always surprising but welcome maternal mode kicking in. He can always tell by the arch of her eyebrows, like she’s about to make him cocoa before threatening his bully. “Did he tell you that you should?”
“I dropped out this morning,” Andy says, breathing very carefully, “and I went to him first, which was dumb."
Laurel rests her head on his shoulder, slides an arm around his waist. She’s so good at knowing when to touch people, filling in gaps in moments, smiling just right.
“What did he say?” Stef asks, glaring at him.
“. . .he said he wasn’t surprised,” Andy says, sighing. It would have hurt worse coming from somebody who actually loves him—and if Stephen loves him, he’s doing it wrong most of the time.
There’s a deadly silence and he turns slowly to see Laurel, streaked with pale blues and pinks and wearing a t-shirt covered in badgers, with a look of absolute white hot fury on her face.
“Hey, historically I pick guys who practically hate me,” he says, letting out a laugh that only trembles a little. “I shouldn’t be surprised.”
“We can’t kill him,” Stef says, directed at Laurel, “but we can threaten him.”
“Or we could kill someone else,” Laurel says, “and then frame him for the crime.”
“. . .well, at that point we could just kill him,” Stef says.
Andy’s got his knees practically pulled up to his chest but he’s smiling, smiling wider when they look over and give him worried looks, like he’s about to fully lose the plot and maybe need to go to a hospital for a brief holding period.
“I love you guys,” he says.
Laurel smiles back, murmurs, “Sweetheart,” and basically crawls into his lap.
Stef looks squirrely before she says, “You’re okay, I guess,” and grabs her coat, heading for the door.
“Are you going to buy a weapon?” he asks.
“Just keep your mouth shut!” she calls back, door slamming behind her.
“You’re too cool to be a lawyer,” Laurel says, when he turns to look at her, face very close to his. “I’ve always said that.”
“You’ve never said that,” Andy says, laughing.
“That’s because I thought it was your dream,” Laurel says, “and I actively try not to crush your dreams, you beautiful butterfly. But this was a bad dream and you’re making a very smart decision and I’m definitely gonna frame that guy for some kind of crime. Or blackmail, maybe—does he have any horrible secrets?”
“None that he told me,” Andy says, feeling kind of sick when he thinks about it. “We never really had conversations, actually. He would just talk and then tell me I talked too much when I tried to talk about myself.”
“You guys have been a thing for a year,” Laurel says, softly. “Andy, has it been like this the whole time?”
“There was a honeymoon period,” Andy says, sinking down further into the couch. “There was wooing—I really like being wooed.”
“Who doesn’t like a good wooing?” she murmurs, patiently waiting for him to continue.
“It was my first relationship that lasted more than a couple of months,” Andy says, eventually, staring at the ceiling instead of her endlessly sympathetic face. “I looked past a few things that hurt a little and then I kept looking past things and then I just felt like shit all the time.”
“You know, one time Stef told me that I was being too happy,” Laurel says, biting her lip when she smiles, “and she immediately died, was reborn, apologized for six hours straight and then went down on me for the next six hours. People say shitty stuff sometimes but they apologize after if they’re humans and not—swoopy haired shiny teethed monsters.”
“His teeth were so shiny,” Andy groans, covering his face with his hands.
“One might say too shiny,” Laurel offers. “Like, we get it, you can afford a dentist."

Savil's death was the most devastating one in the entire Herald Mage Trilogy and I will die on this hill.
"I [Vanyel] can take care of it tomorrow. It's not that urgent...It can wait until morning. He watched the fire through half-closed eyes, listening to Stef breathe, and waited for sleep to take him. Then the peace of the evening shattered.
:VANYEL!:
He was out of bed and grabbing his clothes before Stef woke.
:VAN—:
Savil's cry was cut off, abruptly, and Vanyel doubled up and fell to the floor—Pain—knives of fire [...] Then, nothing—" (Ch 15, Magic's Price)
You can hear her screaming through the all-caps mindspeech. You can hear her desperately calling out to Vanyel, her beloved nephew and protégée for help, the strongest herald-mage in Valdemar and now the last.
You know exactly when she dies because her cry for help is brutally cut off in the middle of Vanyel's name.
"Savil's door was locked; Vanyel kicked it open. His aunt lay in the center of a circle of destruction; furniture overturned, lamps knocked over, papers scattered. Blood everywhere. [...] Claw and teeth marks on Savil's throat and torso showed that she'd put up a fight. A trail of greenish ichor and a broken-bladed knife told that her enemy had not escaped unscathed.
"Not that it mattered to him. The damage was already done, and this time Vanyel's hard-won detachment failed entirely. While the others checked the locks, and looked for clues or any sign of what had attacked her, he sank down to his knees beside the body, and took one limp hand in his—and wept.
Oh, gods—Savil, you were right, and I didn't listen to you. Now you're gone, and it's all my fault. . . ."
"'She was afraid she was going to be next; she asked me to help her, and I just thought she was being hysterical. I promised to strengthen her wards, and I didn't; I forgot. This is all my fault—'"
You are devastated by Vanyel's heartbreak as he curses himself for not listening to her, for putting it off when she said someone was targeting the herald mages and asked him to help her.
"She's never going to sit there in her chair and expound at me again. I can't ever ask her for advice. She'll never take on Father for me—she was my mother in everything but flesh, and I failed her, I failed her, when I'd promised to help her. He hung his head, and closed his eyes, choking down the sob that rose and cut off his breathing" (emphasis mine).
Savil was a rock for Vanyel and thus for the reader throughout the trilogy (and her death is near the end of the last book & the catalyst for the end). She was very human and fallible but steady, devoted, and talented mentor and mage.
But what about Tylendel?, you say. Yes, Tylendel's death was awful, but it doesn't get nearly the lengthy treatment that Savil's does, and...there was a lot of other stuff going on. But what about Vanyel?, you say. Well, there is a reason that I put off reading the last part of Magic's Price, and it's because Vanyel's death is horribly devastating, but also victorious, and he gets his happy afterlife.
"Savil, Savil, I'm so sorry—and sorry isn't enough. Sorry won't bring you back. Tears escaped from under his closed eyelids, and etched their way down his cheeks. He couldn't swallow; he could hardly breathe." (Ch 15, Magic's Price)
She called for him. The last thing Savil ever did was call Vanyel for help. He was down the hall from her and much, much too far away.

To be fair even if the bts content dropped to almost zero (live twetting, lives and marina stuff on SM included) I feel like some people created a paralell universe were S&D used to be attached to the hip in a context different to when they were creating content for the fans-series or during the lockdown and their bubble. Yes, they used to post more together or to post when they were together but now besides those events and certain stuff we barely get to see what they're doing on their free time. They went to an event together a while ago and then it was more like hanging out a little, take a selfie or nothing lol in other events. The only way we know that they hang out and danced together at the last wrap party is because Stef decided to post her film pics haha. To be honest I feel like since Stef started hanging out more with Merle, the fandom doubled the drama about D&S. The drama grows if she's with someone else from the cast other than D. Last night from the vids/pics I got that everyone had their little group of people and at certain times they mixed, talked and took pics with different people (you can see Boris talking to Macey and Daniele, Stef with Merle and Emily). It was a bunch of cast and crew to talk with, lots of people they are not gonna see again soon.
What I mean if that you ever saw them as bffs that used to be together all the time you are gonna freak out at "differences", this discourse on twitter that they are bffs, that they are the eachother's person is what causes drama. They even had to say at a m&g "we don't hang out together much after the show" and I believe they tried to make sure we get how much they love and respect the other, how much they enjoy working together and that they cherish a friendship but that's far from being sisters or even soulmates as some fans claim lol.
Yes, exactly. I said a little bit of this too but this fandom loves to project their own things and have expectations and then get upset when it doesn't happen and then it creates unnecessary drama. Of course we all love to see the actresses of our favorite ships interacting but you would think that wlw fandoms would learn their lesson because the same pattern happens every time. The actresses are so open and involved at first, the fandom takes advantage of that, crosses boundaries/make assumptions and then the actresses start to pull away in public. I don't know why people can't just be normal and respectful so that it's not ruined every single time.

The first is from Stef's sister Helena in Budapest, dated August, saying Stef is on mandatory bedrest for 6 weeks after a serious illness that affected her heart and politely requesting that Jelonka work out financial matters re: Stef's teaching obligations in September + paying for medical bills, as she does not want to bring up stressful money stuff in Stef's weakened state

Your gremlin theorist has returned with more weird questions. It genuinely makes me so happy when you reply to my dumb questions, it always brightens my mood, so I thank you for that :)
My weird question is- what would happen if IRH, M2D and FASFTS Stefan’s met? Because while IRH and M2D are from the same branch, FASFTS is completely different. IRH Stefan still has Damon as his “Big Brother”, No Enzo, hasn’t fully accepted his little space and is still getting adjusted to stuff. M2D Stefan accepted his little space, Calls Damon ‘Dad’ and has Enzo (Papa). FASFTS Stefan is human, from a more modern AU, has a vampire older brother (who is much older than Stefan than other versions of Damon’s and Stefan’s), still has Lily alive and obviously- isn’t a little.
They all have such different personalities is almost interesting. I imagine M2D and IRH Stefan’s would get along better since their from the same branch, I can see IRH Stef questioning him and M2D wondering why his life is still a mess (it kinda is compared to m2d) while FASFTS Stef is just in the corner staring at this vampire version of himself (who may be older depending on what age he is-) who live in a world where vampire are knows and are also age regresses? My dude is either impressed or traumatized-
Oh god imagine the Damon’s meeting?- M2D Damon would definitely have something to say to IRH Damon but can also understand his still working on things? And FASFTS Damon would just wish to be them because then he’d have a Stefan who is always young and clings to him.
Again- random question that will probably keep me up thinking now-. Again you answering this dumb questions always makes my day, the fact that you take a moment from your time to do those makes me smile. I sent you virtual hugs and thanks

IRH!Stefan would be mistified at how comfortable M2D!Stefan is with being a baby. He wishes he could be that carefree, but M2D!Stefan would assure him that he used to be the same way. It just takes time.
Meanwhile, lil human Stefan (picturing him 12) would just be like "So wait...you guys are teenagers...but you're also still little kids..." I think he'd be both a little horrified by the idea of never truly growing up while also a little jealous that they still get to be little kids and tended to, no matter what. (Despite the fact that Damon will always view him as a little boy and treat him as such)
IRH!Damon and FASFTS!Damon are the most alike in terms of still sorting out their anger and putting revenge second to caring for their brother. M2D!Damon would be sympathetic but also ream them out for putting their chances at raising their brothers at risk. And M2D!Denzo would probably lock FASFTS!Denzo in a room until they agreed to get married and settle down, because really they're being dumb.
FASFTS!Damon would stare at M2D & IRH! Stefans for hours, seeing just what his baby brother will look like when he's a teenager. Feeling both bittersweet and proud.
IRH & M2D!Damons would absolutely melt at the chance to see and interact with a younger version of Stefan. They'd just want to cuddle him and pinch his cheeks and not let go. He'd definitely be carried around the entire time. If IRH & M2D!Stefans are toddlers, he'd truly be the baby. The other Stefans would feel a little jealous but they'd also have the other Damon fussing over them.
One of the biggest things to emerge would definitely be IRH!Stefan realizing that IRH!Damon doesn't have a partner like the other two. He's raising Stefan alone. Damon is okay with that as he's not ready for a relationship. But I think it'd finally make Stefan realize that if the other two can be in a relationship and still love the other versions of himself...maybe one day he'll be okay if Damon met Enzo in their timeline.

- The Lord of the Ring Trilogy
That one's an easy one. For a very long time, it was just the movie(s) I watched the most often across a year. I fell in love with The Fellowship of the Ring when I saw it at 10 in theatre, and I never came back. I know them by heart (both in French and English), and at this point putting them on just feels like coming home. It's the friendships, the hope through darkness, the love overcoming for me.
- Pride (2014)
This one's based on a true story, it's beautiful and touching and has a fantastic soundtrack of course. I watch it when I want an uplifting story but I still need to cry (usually the Bread and Roses scene or Joe and Stef sharing the bed does it, but if not? I always cry at the end), and it makes me feel better about what we can do together. I also really like the friendships in that movie, somehow they make me miss having that irl the most.

You know how they say the music you listen at 14/15 shapes your music tastes for life? That was the movie version for me. I was 15 when I saw it, and listen. Hear me out. Between Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, and Tilda Swinton (especially looking like this) ... well. I was very into it ok. I also love horror and supernatural so you know. I love the story, there is a really good sibling relationship (if sad), it has angels and demons and cross engraved bullets... it's an easy go-to when I want some action and fantastical stuffs.
- 8 Femmes
It's a French jukebox musical about a murder, with a women-only cast for 99% of the movie. What not to love?? It's camp, the actresses are fantastic (it's an all star cast), I love the 50s feel of the whole thing, the songs are great, the characters are color coded ... I somehow always feel lighter after seeing this one, and find myself singing along all the time. (also come on, who wouldn't want to see Fanny Ardant and Catherine Deneuve make out in skirt suits?)
- Ai no Kotodama (2007)
Ootani and Tachibana have been together since high school, now in college they live together, installed in a comfortable routine until a high school classmate reappears in their life and things... become complicated. This one is just… warm, and simple, and quiet. It's just a slice of life, the conflicts can be a little silly but some feel more grounded, there is a clear and sweet happy end, it always warms me up. I've seen it for the first time 13 years ago and I still think about it regularly. Also the two songs are great and still on my playlists, and the fashion now feels delightfully out of date (Ootani's hair hello <3).
- Big Eden
I watched this one for the first time at a moment in my life where i was very lonely. I picked it up because I had seen some gifs on tumblr, I knew it had a happy ending, and I was starting to want to watch more story with adults. There are so many things to love in that beautiful movie, but usually I put it on for the warmth and acceptance of the community, for "Thing is, Pike, we want things to be nice for you, too, buddy." and the whole "Did we teach you shame?" speech and "I was just hoping you'd let yourself be found this time. I was hoping you'd let us find you. But you keep wandering and we can't." and just... yeah. This one is a comfort still when I feel lonely, or lost, removed from the people I love.
- Coraline
I was already a huge fan of the book and of Henry Selick's work when my dad took me to see it for my 18th birthday. It's a beautiful movie, visually, with an incredible score (by Bruno Coulais), and a very strong adaptation of the novel imo. It's a little creepy, but the good guys win at the end, I love Coraline as a character, and as I said it's just SO pretty to look at? I never get bored by it.
