More and more uncommon names are excluded from the SSA name dataset.
For privacy reasons, the SSA name dataset excludes very uncommon names.
The graph below shows the percent of Social Security card applicants that have been excluded from the SSA name dataset each year.
Tumblr media
Per the stated limitations of the SSA name dataset:
To safeguard privacy, we exclude from our tabulated lists of names those that would indicate, or would allow the ability to determine, names with fewer than 5 occurrences in any geographic area. If a name has less than 5 occurrences for a year of birth in any state, the sum of the state counts for that year will be less than the national count.
The SSA also publishes a table with the number of Social Security card applicants by year. This table contains total numbers and not specific names, so applicants with very uncommon names are accounted for in this table. Each year, there is a gap between the number of Social Security card applicants and the number of births accounted for in the SSA name dataset.

Here are resources for if you're like me, living below the poverty line, with or without disabilities
Everyone is allowed to exist, to take up space, to have and eat food, to have housing and warmth and medical care. the USA does NOT make this easy. It should, but it prioritizes companies and the wealthy over it's citizens.
There are resources you can use if you're making less than 30% of the median income in your area in most places. You can find out what it is via google, by looking up your county's social services website. Not social security, social services.
If you're relying exclusively on SSA programs like Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you ARE below that income level.
If you have a disability that keeps you from working, like severe anxiety, depression, a severe mental impairment or a light sensitive/stress sensitive medical condition like a seizure disorder or a heart issue, or most kinds of movement issues that bar you from meeting requirements like being able to lift over 50 pounds, you can talk to your doctor, get documentation, and apply for that assistance. There is no shame in applying. Just remember you should think about what you can do on your *worst* days, not on a good day. Exclusively think about your worst days when you're asking your doctor or applying for assistance, because those worst days are what are keeping you from working, or losing employment opportunities.
You can apply for SSA online, but be prepared for an in person interview, and assessment by a doctor of their choosing. If you're denied, get a lawyer. They can help you appeal and they get paid only when you get approved, so they're highly motivated to get you approved.
Things that are available to you if you're under that median income, regardless of whether you're on an SSA:
Department of (vocational) Rehabilitation-- It might go by another name in your state, but they can help you get testing for neuro divergent conditions like ADHD or Autism, address physical limitations, and help you find education, therapies to allow you to work around your issues, and help you find employment that meets your needs. This is available to you if you've been out of the workforce for a long time, as well, for whatever reason. Whether you were a home maker, or you were serving time.
Ticket to Work--A program available through social security. You can apply for this if you've been on social security for a while, and you feel like you're ready to reenter the work force. You will be given a list of companies that work with social security, and you're likely to work fewer hours or under the minimum wage. Your social security may be lowered based on your income with the program, so that's something to keep in mind.
Unemployment (through your social services branch), available if you've lost your job via firing, generally not if you've quit, to my knowledge. You have to prove you're actively seeking employment, and check in a few times a week or a few times a month based on your situation and location. Be prepared with printed out proof of your applications being turned in. Put it in a binder with plastic sleeves, use dividers to mark batch dates. The more professional you make it look the better.
Disability leave income-- This is dependent on your employer, in a lot of places, but it could be available to you. You can, and should, seek medical assistance if you're injured on or off the job to the point where it's severely impairing your work. If it's to a point where you're unable to work with accommodations, but it's recoverable, apply for disability. If it's not recoverable, apply for social security
Section 8 housing-- Available through HUD (Housing and urban development), usually a lottery or a waitlist. You have to make sure you pay attention to when applications open, and have proof of income available. Have your proof of income ready, wherever your income comes from.
Low income housing--Available in a case by case basis, first come first serve, and they generally prioritize disabled people, elderly, and families, especially families with young children or single incomes. The HUD.gov website has an interactive map that will show you it's locations, and the locations of housing that is taxpayer funded, or other forms of low income assisted programs. You apply for these on an individual building basis, and waitlists can be months to years long depending on your chosen location's population density (In san francisco, for instance, a waitlist for a low income place can be eight or more years long) You'll also need to have proof of income ready.
Charities for low income people are available to help you with deposits and first months rent, or rent for a month when you're in a pinch (One month per each 12 month period) in most urban locations. 211 can help you find these resources
Medicaid--Apply through your social services office, or social security if you're receiving it. Social services will require yearly renewal, social security will keep it up to date for you.
SNAP benefits-- You apply through social services, and you need to have all your documents ready. Proof of income, your rent information, formal or informal (either through a formal landlord or an agreement between you and your roommate or parents) as well as proof of bills and residency. If you have social security this is now available to you in most places. Use it
Cash aid--Not available to people who have social security, but it IS available to people on unemployment, disability leave, or who are generally under employed. You apply for this through social services when you're applying for SNAP.
Reduced public transit fare, or gas cards--Available in limited locations, usually urban. You should look up whether it's available in your area, and whether you have to apply through your medical insurance provider, through the transit authority office, or through your social services case worker. It's different everywhere. If you struggle with transportation, it's vital you apply.
Utility assistance--Either through the provider, or through your city. You should be prepared to offer your proof of income, whether it's social security, or SNAP, or sometimes even proof of public medical, as well as proof of residency (your lease and or official government mail, like the DMV, or financial mail like a bank statement or a utility bill)
Phone or internet assistance--Via the Federal Communications Act. Applications are only available until February 7, 2024, but your internet provider may put the cut off for turning in proof of acceptance as today (February 6, 2024), and this program will likely only be available until April. You can receive either internet assistance (up to 30 dollars), or a free cell phone with data up to one gig. You cannot get both.
Food banks. So many food banks. You have to google where they are in your area, and they may not have a lot of the things you would normally eat. A lot of it is the food people think is 'ugly' or is bordering on stale or about to hit it's expiration date, but food is food, and food close to it's expiration date can still be eaten up to two weeks after the date in a lot of cases. It's best to look up what can be eaten past it's expiration, but it's possible in a lot of situations. You just have to get really creative with what they give you. You can use these once a month, and be prepared to be honest about how many people you're feeding. If there are multiple unrelated adults in a household, you have to go separately. (I don't personally use them because I have allergies and cross contamination can be a real problem with this option. They may not have kosher or halal food, especially if it's through a christian church, and they're not likely to have meat) Some food banks will deliver if you have mobility or transportation issues.
Pet food banks--The ASPCA has these listed on their website. You can use them once monthly for pet food, clean up supplies, or pet toys. It's based on what they have available, it's not always going to be a lot, and they recommend you try other sources first, or have a back up plan. But if you need to cover a gap, it's an option. Some places have delivery as an option.
If there's a program I don't have listed, it's likely I don't know about it, and I encourage you to add it to the list. Enlighten me. Maybe there's something you know about that I don't, and it's something I can use.
Disclaimer: I don't know anything about programs or resources for unhoused people. I have been unhoused, but in that period I did not know to look for resources, and that was more than twelve years ago, now.

Do you have any suggestions or resources for a person with high functioning autism who is applying for SSI and/or disability in America? Any other relevant information would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there,
I don’t know much about social security, despite me having it myself, but I found something that could potentially help. According to this article:
Whether you are applying for yourself or on behalf of a child or adult with autism, you must collect as many medical records as possible. The more thorough the medical documentation that accompanies any claim, the more likely it is the argument for disability can be clearly made.
Additionally, statements from friends, family members, doctors, teachers, and caregivers can be instrumental in substantiating the argument that autism limits the child’s or the adult’s ability to care for him or herself or to participate in and appropriately respond to everyday situations, conversations, and activities.
Since there is a financial component to SSI, you will need financial records too. These may include paystubs, statements from any other benefits received, bank account statements, and any other documentation related to income and other financial assets or resources. You will also need information about past salaries or wages when applying for SSDI benefits, because the amount you earned while working will determine how much your monthly benefit will be.
When you are prepared to apply, you must schedule an appointment with your local SSA office for completing the SSI application, which are found in every state. To schedule an appointment, call the SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.
The SSDI application can be filled out entirely online, or in person as well, whichever you prefer. Whether you apply in person or online, follow up with copies of all the pertinent documentation as successful applications are well supported with substantial medical and other records.
The full article will be below if you want to check it out:
Maybe my followers can provide some help too.
Thank you for the inbox. I hope you have a wonderful day/night. ♥️

It can be useful to get people who are not doctors to write reports about how an illness or disability has affected somebody when applying for disability payments in lots of countries. This document is from the US but the questions could give ideas about areas people in other countries could write about when writing such a report. ----- SSA 3rd party report form as part of the SSDI application. This form is for colleagues, friends, family, people who know the individual well enough to describe the impact of their symptoms on their level of function. If possible, documentation of what the person was able to do before they got sick is helpful to contrast with current level of function and the impact of cognitive and or physical exertion currently. This is NOT the form filled out by healthcare professionals for SSDI determinations. https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-3380.pdf

things people don't tell you about being on SSDI
you'll grieve the ability to hold down a full-time job
you'll grieve the ability to hold down a part-time job that pays more than $1300/month
any questions you have for the Social Security Administration (SSA) about your claim can take various phone calls, visits to your local office (which may not be close or accepting in-person appointments), and a lot of waiting
you can do a lot on MySSA, but you can't see everything--like your acceptance or denial letter
it's tough coming up with a new routine when you're not working
it's tough fostering your self-worth when you're not working
mental health takes a front seat when you're not working (access to mental health services is crucial; look into marketplace plans, medicaid, COBRA, and sliding scale services)
The Sleepy Girl Guide is amazing for before/during/after application and will show you everything you may qualify for after being approved
you may not be able to relate to your friends as much because they're working and you're not--really hit hard on your common interests
not working can be very isolating and lonely
other disabled folks and folks on SSDI will be lifelines--join a support group on a platform like facebook or follow pages specific to your chronic illness/condition on tumblr, etc.
you'll feel pressure to return to work once you feel a little better--don't let capitalism get to you and prevent you from healing
you might be afraid/anxious that someone somewhere is going to take away your hard-earned benefits--talk through this with a mental health pro or a trusted friend/support group
it's okay to struggle
it's okay to ask for help
it's okay if this isn't how you pictured your life
it's okay. you're gonna be okay. you, yourself, are precious.

An open letter to the U.S. Senate
Improve disabled American's financial stability with S.4102 - SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act
In the words of David Goldfarb on behalf of the Arc of the United States, "…we enthusiastically endorse S. 4102, the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, which would raise the amount of savings a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipient can keep for the first time in over thirty years. The mission of the Arc is to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and actively support their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.
"SSI provides an extremely modest cash benefit, a maximum of $841 a month in 2022, for certain individuals with disabilities and older adults. In March 2022, nearly 7.6 million people: 4.3 million working-age individuals with disabilities; 1 million children with disabilities; and 2.3 million older adults relied on the program.
"Many individuals with IDD rely on the SSI program. In 2017, SSA estimated that approximately 19% of working-age SSI recipients possessed an intellectual disability. For many people with IDD, SSI is their only source of income without which they could become institutionalized or homeless.
"Unfortunately, the benefit’s low, outdated resource limit of $2,000 for individuals/$3,000 for couples does not allow people to save for emergencies, such as a leaky roof, car repair, or other unexpected expense. To make matters worse, the $2,000 limit does not adjust for inflation every year, and it has remained the same since 1989.
"The SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act would significantly improve the lives of SSI recipients, including people with IDD, by raising the asset limit to $10,000 per individual/$20,000 per couple. The legislation also adjusts that number for inflation every year, a critical element in 2 today’s inflationary environment. This will allow SSI beneficiaries to use their own savings to address needed emergencies when they arise.
"Thank you again for this critical legislation."
Truly his letter is phenomenal and applicable to many American citizens. I hope you too appreciate his mastery of diction, his compassion for his fellow American, and the truth in his words.

Hey so not to go begging on main again but I'm fighting with the ssa to review my disability/ssi applications, and somehow they've determined I owe them $18k despite never having seen a penny from them. I'm still fighting them on it to hopefully get it cleared before I pay any of it, but yeah
I also am already in ~$10k worth of debt and struggling to survive. I am severely disabled w/ chronic inflammatory arthritis & mental illnesses and need help until I can find some way to make money consistently. I've been doing D**rdash but the payout is terrible and my back can't handle it anymore but for a few hours here and there
Help no matter how small is greatly appreciated:
C.sh.pp: $Silfurgames
P.ypal: @silfurgames
I can also do art. I do nsfw as well as sfw. I'm willing to work with people so I don't really have set rates. But I'd prefer $10 min for sketches and $20 min for full pieces.
Below are examples of some of my work but are far from all of it. Msg me to talk if you're interested.

Please. Literally anything helps. I know we're all broke but I am quite literally living in my parents garage without running water or a bathroom and just praying that I figure something out soon before things get any worse.
I am attending community College online classes in an effort to learn a desk job that I can hopefully do despite my disabilities, + my gf is learning to drive and applying everywhere she can, but capitalism is a fucking plague seeing as she got turned away by places like Ch*li's for "not having enough experience"
How much fucking experience do you need to work a minimum wage job as a hostess at a goddamn Ch*li's? But I digress.
We desperately need help, and any and all help is greatly greatly appreciated. thank you.

“Gay trans people are so much more entitled” Tumblr isn’t real life. Have you stopped to even maybe consider how straight trans people are a lot more likely to have community with who they’re attracted to. Gay trans do not. I’m sorry but this is soooo the opposite of everything I’ve seen and experienced in real life. Annoying people on tiktok are not the representatives of real life
If you'd told me to touch grass at any point during the time that I identified as trans I could've happily abided because I had plenty of it around me. Grass, cows, and farmland. A real life LGBT community, not so much. I was going to call your argument outdated given how intertwined the internet has become with real life but if anything the idea that everyone has access to an IRL LGBT community is extremely modern (and still not applicable to any of the dozens of people who live far away from major cities).
I don't think we should brush homophobes who are actively making the community unwelcoming to exclusively SSA people off as "annoying people on tiktok" when the online community is all some people have. And that's not about being a spoiled chronically online Youth who refuses to get off their phone and meet real people, even in the 90s a lot of LGBT people could only turn to online forums for acceptance and a sense of community.
But, for the record, I did end up finding an IRL community an hour away eventually and it absolutely wasn't better. It was a group that met once a month, usually only around 7 people showed up. The first time I went they were taking feedback on how the group was being run and a "trans lesbian" who had just aged out of the intended age bracket but didn't want to stop going jokingly complained that the group hadn't resulted in her having a wife and child yet. At that same meeting another trans woman complained that women were uncomfortable with her being in the women's changing room just because she had a penis. The person who ran the group was a pansexual woman who called herself a dyke (while being in a relationship with a man) and silenced my guilt of (at the time) feeling like I could only ever be happy with a woman by saying I may just meet a man I like. Online narratives on sexuality and perceived transphobia don't just stay online, they're created and absorbed by real people and those people go outside too. The group ended up shutting down because nobody wanted to run it anymore.
>Have you stopped to even maybe consider how straight trans people are a lot more likely to have community with who they’re attracted to. Gay trans do not.
How does that work in your head? The community actively looks down on lesbian/ftm and gay/mtf relationships to the point even people who might be interested in them won't touch that dynamic with a 10 foot pole. Bisexuals are in the community and can date both groups.
Also most "gay trans men" I knew when I identified as trans defined their sexuality by gender identity rather than sex and they just dated each other lmao. That's super common among "trans lesbians" too. I don't get what point you're trying to make.

This is apropos of nothing but most of the reason (in my experience at my job) that it takes so long for the government to do things for you is because like 75% of the applications they receive are filled out wrong and they're dealing with them in the order they arrived, so they're basically stuck on someone's fucked up mess while yours is in the queue at number 20 and the good thing about this is that if you call someone and are nice about it they will probably help you either fix yours if it wasn't right or move yours to a higher priority. People are always amazed when they call and get help and things go faster because they believe all the government horror stories out there. Public servants are obligated to help everyone and that makes the workload crazy but they'd rather help you who shows interest than someone who hasn't answered the phone for a week and wants them to send them everything in a letter. Now this probably isn't going to work on like a passport application (although elected officials will typically help you with those if you're willing to go that route) but for like state/local permits why don't you just try reaching out. I've even seen people get really personalized help from the SSA in a matter of just a few days by calling the local office

yeah but what i’m saying is that like a week before the macroclit thing we started discussing how much real life application of radical feminism is needed in order to call yourself one (in light of a whole bunch of stuff to do with mama terf including her being pro-gun, investing thousands in capitalist fashion brands in one bag, makeup etc - to the point she even admits she does nothing radical in her real life).
but when the macroclit situation happened and people were rude to her about an abortion (which of course isn’t radical feminist of them), then now when people talk about how radical you should be irl in order to call yourself radical people assume it’s about macroclit when it isn’t. the post i linked reframed unfair criticism towards macroclit as = ssa v osa nonsense drama, when there was a good conversation happening among people who weren’t involved in the macroclit stuff at all about osa women doing nothing to change their life but maintaining how radical they are. i just feel that is getting twisted into being a sign we are anti-macroclit which isn’t the case. just unfortunate her posts happened at the same time we were already debating osa het-partnered radfems talking the talk without walking the walk.
oh i see,,, fair enough. idk the mamaterf stuff about designer bags and doing nothing radical or w/e so i cant comment on that but yeah i mean, i guess the convo just shifted to sth else and people probably will assume it’s about macroclit if ppl make posts debating that stuff rn even if that’s not the case at all
