Lately i had some seriously perception-shifting realisations. When i was just starting developing an ED i constantly compared myself to others and i kept thinking that if they are so skinny, then i could do it too. And i kept wondering how they did it so easily when i needed to do some really really unhealthy things to look like them. Well. Turns out, they didn't. At least two of the people i compared myself to and took as a goal for how i wanted to look, suffer from EDs as well. I found out when i got triggered by one of them being unable to eat even a salad in the compay of others and leaving for the toilet after eating a little. I've been there and seeing her be so uncomfortable around food made it incredibly hard for me to get my food down without panicking. Now i wonder if I ever made someone else feel terrible about their eating habits by restricting. And i wonder if, when i was at my skinniest and unhealthiest, someone looked at me and thought similar things as i did when i looked at those other skinny people. I don't really know where I'm going with this but it was the strangest realisation that an ED isn't only a vicious cycle for myself, but possibly also something that can suck in the people around me and damn it i don't want to do what i did to myself to anyone else. Probably the biggest motivator to keep working on my recovery

Director Mercedes Bryce Morgan and screenwriter Leah Saint Marie discuss their genre film SPOONFUL OF SUGAR.

Making its New York premier as part of the 2023 Winter Film Awards Winter FEAR Awards Horror Film Competition is the genre film SPOONFUL OF SUGAR, the tale of a disturbed babysitter experiences a sexual awakening while using LSD to alternatively treat a seemingly “sick” child from a family with dark secrets of their own.

SPOONFUL OF SUGAR is directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan from a screenplay by writer Leah Saint Marie.

Mercedes Bryce Morgan is an award-winning mixed Latinx director who made her feature debut with FIXATION which premiered at TIFF 2022. SPOONFUL OF SUGAR is her second feature which premiered at Fantastic Fest and will screen later this year on AMC’s Shudder. Mercedes has a BA in Film and TV Production from USC and has directed numerous high-profile actors such as Tiffany Haddish, Idina Menzel, Miranda Cosgrove, Hayley Kiyoko, and Billy Porter, among many others.

Leah Saint Marie

Leah Saint Marie is an investigative journalist turned filmmaker. As a reporter for the Innocence Institute she helped exonerate a man from prison who had spent 25 years wrongfully convicted. As a filmmaker she wrote the award-winning documentary, Price of Honor, led to Yaser Said’s eventual arrest in 2021, one of the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted. For two years she served as a field producer for the social justice documentary film company, Brave New Films, where she traveled around the United States on a Ford grant interviewing youth activists. Her short film, Good Girl, won the Paris International Film Festival. Her book of poetry, The Eaten, is being published later this year, she is producing podcasts, and she’s set to direct her next feature film, Teatro dell’Amore in Italy later this year.

The music heard in the background during this episode are other musical pieces by composer Robert Allaire, who scored SPOONFUL OF SUGAR.

Happy Birthday Beth!

It wasn't too big a stretch to see Beth's confusion when Caity says they're going away for a spa weekend. The last time she went to one on her own, Beth couldn't help but notice the bruises on her shins carefully concealed with opaque tights and jeans, raw knuckles, and her eventual confidence that she takes self-defense courses. And while it's incredibly noteworthy and very girl-boss of her, Beth wonders how much she really needs to learn. Mr Sweeney would never let anything happen to her, and maybe they don't see it but the man's absolutely over the moon with her. But it's not Beth's place to speak. They drive from Boston to Manhattan before Beth understands that they're on a real trip, and are picking up the girls. Jay and Tabby, Cory and... Luc. Okay so he's very technically not a girl, but her paramedic friend ~also once on track to becoming a doctor before he cracked under the pressure, and now they are a support group of two~ is the one person she knows absolutely needs two days of nothing but all inclusive pampering in the Hamptons. Caity never tells her that the weekend is mostly paid for by Mr Sweeney and her brother, the one time they aren't at one another's throats. It isn't an embarrasment to have her own house keeper opening the summer house for them, and maybe the staff are happy to finally be able to earn the ridiculous salaries they command. Everyone has their own room throughout the spacious mansion, and the beach calls them that first day. Beth couldn't help but laugh when Luc chose to wear a blonde wig and an orange swimsuit for their photo-line up. After dinner and a beautiful cake, they settle in the formal parlour for gifts and stories and pretty frilly cocktails. Each one is a token of love from her closest friends. Caity's choice of necklace and earrings are so lovely, so delicate, Beth can't help but tear up as she throws her hands around Caity's neck. There's brunch and mimosas, there's hot stone massages, mud baths, orchestral music. It really is the perfect get away, full of life and fun, and for those three days she remembers what it's like to be young and happy again, something she owes Caity.

Parting is bittersweet, and they all promise to do it again soon.

The ride back though is just as fun, singing along to the radio, talking about Ireland and Hawai'i, and how they ended up both coming to Boston. It’s a different kind of gift, but one as special and one as full of memories.

“yunie, can you pass me the watermelon in the fridge? the one from yesterday,” you spare a quick glance towards the half naked boy wearing only a pair of sweatpants. his black hair all dishevelled looking even more messier due to the perm he got last week. walking out of his room, headset resting around his neck, before your eyes return to focus on the movie playing on the tv screen. “yeah sure,” he mumbles out softly, the rasp in his voice sounding probably like he stayed up all night again.

taking the half a piece of watermelon out and grabbing a spoon jake scoops out a small little portion. going up to your slouched figure on the couch and extending the bite of fruit towards your mouth,“here you go, candy,” his custom of feeding you, something he does so often, it's become a habit. after you’ve eaten it, he hands you the ball of sweetness and sits beside you to see what you’re watching.

not even a minute after and he’s fidgeting about. pulling up to sit cross-legged,“do you want to go buy a new sofa at ikea tomorrow? this one’s pretty small,” he turns to look at you, raising his brows subtly,“well first of all i didn’t plan to have a roommate and secon- i swear if it’s for your sex deeds i’m kicking you out!” it comes out in a yell, voice raising with every syllable before you throw a seed at him. which due to your bad aiming skills instead of landing on his face, falls and sticks to the skin of his chest.

keeping away the watermelon in a crackle of laughter, you pick up mei and settle her on your lap, pulling back your blanket which had slipped off,“this is a public space have some decency before you have such thoughts!”

“stop making me appear like a horndog!” he laughs along, whinning at your false accusations in giggles and a look of faux disbelief.

“well that is exactly what you are but i’ll stop if you make me some sweet soy-glazed potatoes,” you grin with your signature cutesy doe eyes and jake is a goner. he always is.
