one thing i really liked about that episode was how much it focused on the dynamic between dean and jack. dean seemed really worried about jack’s wellbeing when he swallowed the occultum, more than he was about the occultum itself. and when jack was begging to be forgiven at the end, dean looked.... gutted. whereas, if he still blamed jack, he would’ve been angry, right? he would even get angry when cas mentioned jack, before he came back from the empty.

Yeah, I made a comment-- maybe even during the liveblogging-- that Jack had all the proof that Dean had forgiven him, if he only knew how to interpret Dean’s “love language.” To Dean, he shows his love through food, through providing for the people he cares about, and Jack had a buffet of a vast array of food the show has used as a symbol of Dean’s “comfort foods.”

Sandy’s fried chicken: notable for having been the meal Mary brought for her boys in 12.02 for their reunion family dinner. Also, paired with prune juice, the food Dean brought for Kevin when he’d been trapped in the bunker and not taking care of himself in 9.02.

a “Slushy Mushy”, which while not a Big O Slush from Gas n Sip is still similar...

Pizza (and hey the show had a long montage in the THEN segment reminding us that Dean was the pizza man... this is their celebratory family meal food, both in reality, and in Sam’s dream in 13.21. It’s also a food Dean resorts to for comfort, such as when he’s holed up in his room in 14.04.

There’s a bunch of other food, too, but this is what I remember off the top of my head (i mean it’s hard NOT to remember a “slushy mushy” am i right)

It sort of reminds me of Dean’s buffet binges back when he was struggling with the MoC, like in 10.13. During that whole era of the show, Dean eating vs not eating, and all his experimentation with foods like pure vs junk food, pie vs cake, and then as the mark began to take hold of him he stopped eating altogether which was literally Crowley’s warning sign that it was truly transforming him into something else... yeah, I can see why Dean is still attached to the idea of Jack and Food, like as long as he’s eating at all it’s gonna be okay...

So yeah, thank heck he got his soul back, but Dean had still been doing what he could to take care of Jack, in one of the only ways he knew how to.

Rewatching Mint Condition and I’m gonna rant for a minute.

Sam’s the ‘chief’ and is leading an army of hunters. Which is totally valid, heroic, and not a bad thing in the slightest.

But think back 7 years ago when they discovered the Bunker. Dean was over the moon happy. He started sleeping in pj’s and wearing a robe and drinking coffee out of a real mug and cooking in a real kitchen. Dean was 33/34 and had NEVER had a real house that was all his. Yes there was Bobby’s house, but they were always guests there as they blew in and out. Yes there was the house in Lawrence, but that’s just connected to trauma. The Bunker is Dean’s house.

The only people that have really ever been in the Bunker were people he invited in; which is why Amara/BMOL/Luci/Michael breaking in was such a big deal.

Now think of this. Dean has been traumatized by being possessed. He had been fighting a losing battle for WEEKS while knowing that Michael was doing terrible things through him. Now he is free, and just wants to go home to his safe place; his Bunker. But when he arrived, it’s changed completely. The halls are full of strangers and every room has been taken over. None of these people actually KNOW Dean; to them he’s the guy that said yes to the thing they had been fighting. So Dean had just been through his mind being invaded, and now his home, one of his safe places, had been to.

Of course, there’s Baby. But it’s always Baby, Dean, AND Sam on a hunt. Sam is off being the leader and taking care of all the strangers. I don’t think Dean is pissed about that exactly; he just wants his brother and best friend to have his back dealing with this trauma. So his room is the only place Dean really has left that is private, safe, and familiar.

No wonder he locked himself in there. He’s watching the slasher flicks that were his escape from the crap of his childhood. He’s got pizza from the place in town that they always order from and the recipe never changes. He’s got his brand of beer that you can get in any gas station in America. He’s in his own room where he can shut the door and keep the judging stares from strangers away.

But then his little brother checks in on him and tells him he has a case. It’s comparatively small, but the chance to hunt a case with just him and Sam is EXACTLY what Dean wanted, even needed. No wonder he’s in a good mood! The fact that it’s a ghost possessing a statue of one of his favorite horror victims is just icing on the cake.
