What do you think Dean is thinking right here after cas says I love you? Because I’ll tell you what I think. He’s just thinking “no” over and over again with different meanings.
“No no no no (he’s going to die) no no no no no (he’s loved me this whole time) no no no no (don’t make me acknowledge my feelings) no no no no no (It’ll change everything and I’m scared) no no no (I don’t deserve your love)”

I have some thoughts about this one particular moment
I have never, NEVER seen so much emotion and depth just poured into one little sentence.
What makes it so devastating is when you realize this is a child, who was born into a world so dangerous, he had to grow up too fast (literally) and he’s meeting the man he chose to be his father for THE FIRST TIME.
How do you miss someone you’ve never met before?
Simple, when all you’ve experienced since the moment of your birth, is hostility, contempt and suspicion. All jack has at this point is two men, one wants to kill him. The other wants to use him (albeit a bit more kindly than the first). He doesn’t know what he wants in the world but he knows what he doesn’t want and it’s everything he’s getting from the Winchesters. So he misses the only two people in the world who ever loved him. He can’t have his mom, so he misses Castiel because he misses being ‘SAFE’. And safe is what Cas made him feel before he was even born.
I will never get over how soft and utterly relieved but at the same time TIRED Jack sounds in this moment. To finally have someone in his corner. To watch his back. So he doesn’t have to always be on guard anymore. And I can relate with that. I do relate with that. And that’s why this moment always makes me cry. Cad and Jack deserved to go some place far away and should’ve got to live in a lakeside cabin in southern France and been a family.

Jensen said Dean was in shock during the confession. That's how he played it. So, if he wasn't having BIG emotions in that scene, that's why. It's not that Dean was uncomfortable or that Jensen forgot how to act. Dean's brain was literally shutting down because it was a lot for him to process. And the poor man could barely process it even after Cas was gone.
I'm just tired of seeing people make fun of how he reacted and saying he should have fell to his knees, sobbing, and confessing his love back. Like do you guys not understand how overwhelming that situation must have been for him? First death was LITERALLY after him and Cas. He thinks they're both about to die bloody and he thinks it's his fault. So, it was already a very high stake situation. And then suddenly Cas was dropping the bomb that he made a deal with the Empty. And then he confessed his love for Dean and completely obliterated Dean's image of himself. And then he died right in front of Dean. All within, what? Ten minutes? Of course he was going to be in shock. That's a lot for a human to process in such a short amount of time.
Cut Dean some slack. I guess that's what I'm saying lol.
