This is one of my favorite minor details in Dungeon Meshi, firstly because what in the femme fatale, but also because it's one of those little things that raises so many questions about worldbuilding.
The Occam's Razor defense attorney in me says that Ryoko Kui gave Kabru a boot knife because she wanted him to escape from his bonds here. And Kabru is a very competent swordsman, why wouldn't he have a boot knife, sure. He's already got a dagger, he can have this too.
And yet: the implications. Kabru, why do you have that? That is not remotely something that could be easily accessed or used in combat. Nobody is pulling out a pen knife from the heel of their boot during a fight with a monster. It's useless in the dungeon ... unless you're the type of person who isn't just worried about monsters.
I've mentioned this before, but I consider one of Kabru's functions in the narrative as being the character who fully brings the idea of human ecosystems into the story. There's a reason why he's always connected to large groups of people (Toshiro's party, the Canaries). He (along with Mr. Tansu, briefly) introduces the reader to the social and political forces working on the dungeon, showing us that none of this is happening in a monster-filled vacuum. His confrontation with the corpse retrievers, who very nearly kill Kabru's party permanently with their reckless murder-for-money scheme, reminds us that monsters are not the only things that prey on humans. Kabru understands the ways the dungeon causes people to put profit over human lives.
We only get hints of it in the story, but like any gold-rush-style economic boom, it's implied that there is a lot of crime and corruption surrounding the dungeon.
So yeah, it really makes me wonder why Kabru keeps a tiny knife in his boot, meant to be carried on him even in situations where he would otherwise be unarmed. Stored exactly in the place where it's easy to reach, even if, for some reason, your hands are tied behind your back.

after a full fucking HOUR of trying to cancel my goddamn xfinity subscription in preparation for the upcoming move, i am going to share what i have come away with- the customer service agent i spoke to gave me the direct link to the cancellation form. don't waste your time getting spun around in eight different directions because they don't make this publicly accessible (or at least easily accessible) on their website.

i have warmed up to both toshiro and kabru a lot lately ngl. i rlly like both of them. and as much as i'm looking forward to next week i'm kinda scared of the toshiro hate it's gonna bring outta the woodwork. partly bc i hated him at first myself lol 💀 his fight with laios reminded me of a lot of painful experiences i've had in regards to being autistic but like......... i think once i saw past my own bad experiences and perceived the situation objectively, toshiro's explosion was pretty understandable given the circumstances. toshiro was on the verge of starvation, dehydrated, barely able to keep himself conscious and standing up, and then the random white guy who's kinda been committing unintentional microaggressions towards him for years casually mentions that he did dark magic on the woman toshiro is in love with, the same woman that he's been driving himself to death's door to search for. i think he's justified in being a little upset lol.
like yeah i think what he said to laios was shitty, and ultimately i would say he is "in the wrong" in their conflict, but it's not like laios is a perfect angel either. and toshiro is also just in a desperate miserable situation, and stress can make ppl say things they don't always mean. and in the end, their conflict just makes the bond between them stronger bc it enables toshiro to open up and be more honest and encourages laios to consider his feelings more. and laios still adores the guy and wants to go travelling with him at the end of the manga
i think sometimes ppl should just allow characters to be flawed and say shitty things without instantly declaring those characters as villains. and i don't think his love for falin is "manic pixie girl-ifying" her either, he literally fell in love with her bc he thought she was kind and gentle and intelligent and unique which i think is sweet! and in time i think he would come to see those traits in laios as well.
i'm not saying ppl have to like him bc i didn't even like him myself at first (i actually straight up HATED him initially) but PLEASE at least allow the situation to be nuanced

i know this is A Reach and possibly nitpicky but i think the prettification of the hunger games movies can be seen even in the small matter of katniss's hairstyle. what's described as a simple and practical braid in the books is now a fancy diagonal over-the-shoulder dutch braid in the movies (a braid that is neither functional when the purpose is to get your long hair out of the way, nor very quick/easy to do on yourself), and added to that is the fact that katniss has bangs, once again something that is very impractical when you consider that katniss hunts for a living and those loose hairs would not only be visually obstructive but would also get caught in the bowstring and yanked like hell every time she shoots. in the training sequence of catching fire you can literally see that the bangs are in her eyes. there's a reason olympic archers always have their hair tied up and tucked out of the way. if she were to have a dutch/french braid, the point of that would literally BE to get those shorter hairs out of the way. but since this is a hollywood movie of course they have to make their star have pretty hair that frames her face just so

100% choose to believe that omega and metal and every robot with a voice are literally running vocaloid or utau or something to talk. they simply could talk in hatsune miku’s voice if they wanted to

Most painfuls things in the universe in no particular order:
- stepping on Lego
- a cat walking straight past you instead of stopping for some pets
- childbirth
- Nicholas D. Wolfwood saying: "It would seem that I am no longer qualified to hold you guys."

uuuuuhhh no reason just wanna see the robot get preggers because nobody is really taking advantage of the narrative consequences of the robots of ULTRAKILL having fleshy bits inside them (in my humble opinion hahahaha...hahaha....hah....). Anywhosen also a sucker for general Bad End especially when it involves a psycho-sexual (breeding) binding to a greater entity but also I wanna see the murder-robot get knocked up. And the galaxy brain bit of this is instead of calming down they just get Worse.
YEAH NO ONE REALLY TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THAT. and well i mostly assumed a very small percentage of people actually want to breed the robots like that which is why.
also i don't think this as a bad end, but a bad path that can lead to some other.. inch resting things (my stupid ass is trying to craft a plot with horror and drama from this path and how it'd change the story slightly despite knowing I will never get around to writing it in fic form except tiny excerpt ideas and art)
also i have so much to say abt the 'it doesn't calm down it just gets worse' bc its So true
