Motaz using the beginning of the song Doña Victoria for his video about Hind Allah yarhamha made me cry… (the video)
After Motaz’s video I realized that the song sounded a lot like Raja (the singer) was talking about Palestine… (she was talking about Algeria) I wanted to translate it for people who didn’t understand so I went on YouTube to get the song and I noticed that every single comments for the past 3 months is about how the song reminds them of Palestine and the struggle for liberation and how “Lalla Victoria” will eventually reach Palestine.
The song start by saying “Mom I’m in exile… my convictions won’t change. The passion won’t be extinguished. Freedom runs in our blood” and then there’s the part Motaz used…
Here is a translation of the part he used…
“Free until death/Had they not taken freedom by force it would have never came/Smell the land and you’ll understand that it was watered with blood/ Freedom is near there’s only a few steps left
The people live in hardship it’s been too long/it’s getting worst/“Moh” got his master degree but it didn’t bring him anything/Our hearts rise with anger/Prisons are full/Freedom is handcuffed
Justice is closing her eye/My land is sick/They keep on beating me so I stay silenced/But you’re the one who started attacking us/The youth live in hardship because of this mafia/They use your brothers to attack you and now the people are divided.”
If anyone is interested I can translate the rest of the song too. (The video of the song on YouTube has Arabic and French subtitles, the French subtitles lack nuance but it’s still good. Don’t use the automatic translation to English cause it’s shit)

Tsumi no Soko | Lyrics Translation
Depths of Sin
Rei Kaoru Adonis Koga All
How deeply shall we continue diving into sin like this? It's too late to turn back, but we didn't want to anyway, right? Deeper and deeper, to a place no one can reach — it feels good, doesn't it? You are a dark mermaid The more I chase after you, the more you avoid me with a smile The stained past, as well as the unchanging future Embrace it, I'll embrace it all Come closer, come here It's something you've¹ never shown anyone But if we're together, there's nothing to fear I want to see the real you The moonlight we looked up at Reflects off the water's surface to illuminate us...
The water dripping from your wet hair beckons me into the night Irresistible, isn't it? Makes you want to break it, doesn't it? After waking from a long, deep sleep, your skin is glowing² You are my mermaid I say it again and again, as if to confirm it Yesterday's lies, as well as tomorrow's regrets Embrace it, I'll embrace it all
Come closer, come here It's something you've never shown anyone But if we're together, there's nothing to fear I want to see the real you The distorted, waning moon Reflects off the water's surface to illuminate us... The stained past, as well as the unchanging future Embrace it, I'll embrace it all
Come closer, come here It's something you've never shown anyone But if we're together, there's nothing to fear I want to see the real you The moonlight we looked up at Reflects off the water's surface to envelop us for eternity...
¹JP is a language which often drops the subject from sentences. Though I've gone with "you" for consistency, the subject here could just as easily be "I"
²This line is secretly unbelievably horny. The second half TL'd literally is "your awakened skin is beautiful," but while 肌 certainly means skin, it can also refer to the body specifically when used in the context of sex. Hell, it's used in the phrase 肌を許す, meaning to "give your body up [to a man]." Combined with the previous line, it's pretty clearly an innuendo. Thanks, UNDEAD.

I tried to translate 『 Rakka Girl 』 !
Tumblr media
[ official image source ]
★ Disclaimer: I'm an english speaking casual student of the language and my translation is in no way anything but amateur, I mainly rely on kanji dictionaries and researching individual syntax with very slight MTL assistance. I started to translate Ikigusare songs late last year for myself in order to simply gain a personal understanding of the music and thought I'd share what I have for others now that the idols are finding traction in western spaces. very open to critique!

『Fall Girl』 English Translation [ original lyrics and singable romaji ] cw: explicit suicide mentions, suicidal ideation
Right in front of you, a girl falls from the sky This love story started from here That’s the kind of convenience you wish for, right? Just now, I felt like flying through the sky I might as well fulfill that desire Removing my shoes and arranging them properly,¹ Climbing over the fence, aiming for the top of your head Diving, diving
There! Make sure to catch me In a freefall I make my approach to you Now! Together our journey in the afterlife begins Don’t say such things as “don’t take me” or “don’t involve me” Take responsibility and go out with me, okay?
I looked for a chance atop the apartments I tried to ambush you You make for a moving target after all Hitting it properly will be troublesome In the love letter hidden in your shoebox, I wrote that I’d wait for you behind the complex My chest swelling in anticipation, with ulterior motives I restlessly turn to face you Diving, diving There! Make sure to catch me In a freefall I make my approach to you Now! Together our journey in the afterlife begins Don’t say such things as “don’t take me” or “don’t involve me” Take responsibility and go out with me, okay?
¹ A pair of shoes left on a rooftop denotes suicide and jumping to one’s death. A concrete source was hard to find, though I found a few reasons suggesting why ranging from the separation of life and death akin to entering a house, to leaving behind a mark that you were here. You’ve probably seen it in things like anime and manga too ^^
⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘
i LOVE this song and mv... the pov nature of the final camera angle is so cool, and the guitar solo is one of the best imo! i really hope the nuance in my translated chorus comes through😁
support Ikigusare and their producer Namaichirou on their official channels! I own nothing but my rough translation

our dogfight got sent into overtime! chuu! chuu!
[1] I think the theme of the song is supposed to be like a fight in space? So whenever I see things like shooting rays, I just imagine it like shooting laser guns. If that helps with any visualization.
[2] Copypasting the definition of a dogfight "The term “dogfight” refers to close combat between aircraft that are designed for speed and maneuverability. While aircraft are in close range, pilots try to out-maneuver the other fighter plane with aerobatic moves, such as the barrel roll, and damage the enemy plane using weapons mounted on the aircraft."
[3] I think it's saying "do you know" in English? But if I'm wrong please let me know so I can update it
[4] Dead heat is a situation where both sides are exactly equal ( in this case, that would mean both sides of the battle are tied )
[5] Bakkyun and Zukkyun are hard. They're both onomatopoeias, generally meaning the same thing just slightly different? Bakkyun is like. The sound of shooting something and zukkyun is like the sound of something moving really fast. I believe both of them are often used for the sound of shooting something through the heart? Like imagine cupid's arrow. So I was going to say "Bang! Shot you through the heart" because depending on the line it's saying something is shot at you or shot at me. But right after, there's a line about shooting a ray of light through your heart. So I decided to just keep it as Bang and you can imagine it like shots being fired from both sides

edN Lyrics Translation & Song and MV Analysis
Tumblr media
This time, I dive deeper into the themes and symbolism in the lyrics of edN and the imagery used in the MV. The analysis is based on my own translation. Includes spoilers for the 1Nm8 lore revealed so far, also after the release of FATE.
Please find edN by 1Nm8 and its official MV here.
As this analysis is being written after the release of SHOWDOWN and S∀G∀, I will make references to it where I believe it’s relevant or that something in the MV or the song is foreshadowing. You can find my analysis of S∀G∀ here.
As always, this analysis is subjective and you’re free to agree, disagree, or agree only with parts of it and have your own interpretations! I simply like making these and sharing them in hope my musings will be interesting to other fans.
Keep in mind my translation includes some liberties in wording where I could tweak something for rhythm and rhyme, but the meaning should not be affected. I explained my choices in the analysis. Without further ado, let’s discuss edN and it’s:
General themes:
At least some songs from FATE and RAGE are directed at the opposing group (for example, Hit em up is a clear diss at VISTY, and License to Kill has a reference to the conflict between Iori and Hancho as the extension of his history with Zen), and edN can also be interpreted as a message from 1Nm8 to TCW, at least in some parts.
I think some of the verses are directed at each other, and the chorus seems to be a message to Alter Trigger, though.
edN is mostly about 1Nm8’s goal and mission, with the strongest religious references out of their first three songs. However, there is a darker undertone to it.
Finally, I think edN shows contrast between the members the most from their songs so far.
Imagery
There’s a lot of white in the MV. First, it’s a part of the religious imagery - together with pillars, windows and arches reminiscent of a church. White stands for what’s pure, correct and holy.
However, white can also be a reference to the Alter Trigger facility Itsuki and Rokuta were kept at. The facility, in turn, is a symbol for what they’re fighting against. See the irony? I believe it may be intentional, showing them as two sides of a coin, and how easily righteousness can be corrupted - like at the beginning of the MV.
Tumblr media
Finally, the white may be a reference to 1Nm8’s slogan of “Return to blank”, destruction to a blank slate to build again.
Then, the imagery in each of the members verses could be interpreted as their unique ways of “rebuilding”. It shows the contrasts between the members but also how they complete each other.
Tumblr media
Kei is surrounded by floating broken parts, which means initiates the destruction. He’s the one who has formulated their plan and recruited the others. However, also contributes the ideas and ideals, which is shown by the floating models.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the background in Itsuki’s verses features spirals, harmonious shapes and regular, flowing movement.
Tumblr media
I believe that it shows how he contributes calm and structure. Notice how even the typography in his verses is the most neat and orderly (at least in the beginning), in comparison to Kei’s warying fonts and sizes and quickly moving text, or Rokuta’s floating letters. It appears as if Itsuki was typing the words on a keyboard.
The “typing” might even be a reference to Itsuki seeing himself as a “memory recording machine”.
However, one of 1nm8translation's followers, sugarstar-rabbits interpreted this differently (sharing with permission): that Itsuki typing out his lyrics gave it a cute personal touch. I think that is a good way to look at it too; you could see it as Itsuki being able to communicate better through music.
Tumblr media
Finally, Rokuta is the most playful, with what looks like huge building blocks and floating round letters that remind me of a children’s show. While Kei can go to extremes and Itsuki gets cold and uncompromising, Rokuta brings in the warmth. He may use metaphors that are a bit childish, but he's the best at actually appealing to emotions and emotional needs.
Translation and Analysis
Aiight, Okay listen, Okay listen
It's my mission
Aiight, Okay listen, Okay listen
Open your eyes, the clock is ticking
To lead you is my mission
The quietly hidden away ambition
Just as in the voice drama, Kei declares that he sees changing people’s views of Phantometal is his mission - implied as a mission from God by the imagery. The clock Kei is sitting in front of looks like a clock from a church tower. It also means he’s high up - literally and figuratively “above” the misguided people.
Tumblr media
“Quietly hidden away ambition” might refer to Kei having hidden plans related to his objective or, possibly, the way he didn’t go public about Phantometal until Paradox Live gave him the opportunity.
Do it right, huh
Throw the old system away
Don’t hesitate, break it and reset
Don’t you feel it?
Misunderstandings slipping out of control
Are an evil influence
Do it right, huh
Tumblr media
“溢れ出した勘違いは” literally means “The misunderstandings that overflowed”, like water from a container, but “going out of control” conveys the meaning better in my opinion. The misunderstanding would be rappers thinking that Phantom lives and Phantometal are something good for them - the way TCW refuse to give up on it because of the belief they bring each other and people together with their music.
Don’t get emotional, thinking should come first
I’m sorry, but the alarm is already ringing
If you want to play around, do it another day
We don’t have any more time left
Tumblr media
I think this is one of the parts of the song that is adressed to TCW, based on the confrontation between Kei, Itsuki and Naoakira and Yohei. In the drama track, Itsuki admitted he can't comprehend the emotional response to their plea and their attachment to Phantom Lives.
This verse gets a completely different ring to it after the SHOWDOWN drama track. There, we see that using Phantometal has adverse effects other than just trap reactions on Rokuta, and based on this verse, it likely affects Itsuki badly in some unusual way as well. Despite this, both Itsuki and Rokuta are determined to further Kei’s ideals.
It makes it even more ominous that Itsuki’s wording here doesn’t promise that they would be here later for the “playing around” - it’s more like he’s saying “don’t waste our limited time”.
In my translation I switched “later” for “another day” for the sake of the rhyme.
I can see clearly like a レントゲン
Yeah, no pain no gain
Back to the 原点
Like connecting the dots with a line
I can see clearly like an X-ray
Yeah, no pain no gain
Back to the Origin
To obliterate the Phantom
The first two lines could be a reference to Itsuki’s abilities, but in the context of edN and the message of the song, I think it's more that he sees the truth behind Paradox Live and Phantometal.
Tumblr media
This verse can also be seen as a flash forward to SHOWDOWN. “No pain no gain” is a cliche phrase, but in Itsuki’s and Rokuta’s situation it gains a more specific meaning - without suffering from Phantometal, they can’t accomplish their goal. If they stop out of concern for themselves, or Kei tries to stop them, they will fail.
Tumblr media
Notice the black and white contrast. "Obliterate" is in black while "Phantom is in white. It's as if the MV was asking us "is this really the right thing to do?"
Yeah, History is
In the making
We're gonna be
The 1Nm8 King
The fight to try
Yeah, History is
In the making
We're gonna be
The 1Nm8 King
No matter many times, once again breaking
The fight to try
Tumblr media
I find it interesting that Rokuta is the one who sings this part first (Kei repeats it later with the same lyrics). It shows how, despite his kindness and easygoing personality, he's just as commited to 1Nm8's goals.
It’s unforgiveable,
Don’t you think?
So prepare for the worst
From hell, a pierrot beckons
I believe this part of the chorus adresses Alter Trigger - it's a declaration of war. The "unforgiveable" deeds would be of course their experimentation on the two and the damage the organization inflicted on many others - and continuing to pull strings bedind the scenes.
The phrase 覚悟を決めろ is often used in anime where a character or group challenges their opponent to a fight. It's like saying "prepare to get your ass kicked".
Tumblr media
The 'pierrot' is fascinating because there's a few ways to interpret who it is supposed to be. The pierrot went from a sad fool in comedia dell'arte to a symbol of unpriviledged, opressed and misunderstood people in modern culture. Some artists, like Schoenberg, also used the pierrot's painted face as a symbol of hiding one's feelings and opinions.
Who is the pierrot in edN? I think it's either Ryu - Zero, or Kei. Ryu seems like an obvious choice. His cryptic speech and antics conceal sharp observational skills and the ability to see through people. He is also one of the worst affected by Alter Trigger's experiments.
On the other hand, Kei is the one who takes an active role in fighting for the victims of Alter Trigger and Phantometal. However, his arguments are dismissed by most, and he's seen as an unreasonable "fool".
The imagery in this verse shows Kei's silhouette going down a massive flight of stairs all alone - which may reflect that he has no support. He's stepping from the outside into a building which seems to be full of darkness. The only light is shining in from the outside.
Kei once tried to move away from Phantom Lives and even quit music, after he learned what Phantometal research has done to Rokuta, but he is voluntarily walking back into "hell" of Paradox Live for the sake of his mission of ending it once and for all. He "beckons" Itsuki and Rokuta who decide to follow him.
Tumblr media
Everywhere we go
We’re haunted by noise
Everywhere we go
As soon as we can
Let’s escape this twisted world
The 'noise' doesn't just mean loud sounds, but it can refer to interference or static, or even gossip or irresponsible criticism [1]. The 'noise' would be people trying to get in the way of 1Nm8's plans.
No sacrifice
The melody of destruction is beautiful yet fleeting
Don’t lend your ear to the whisper of the devil
There’s no need to fear,
There will be no sacrifice
In the paradise we lead you to
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is another part that I feel is adressed to TCW. The lyrics acknowledge that Phantom Lives have their appeal, and may even be beautiful, but it's the devil speaking. 1Nm8's ideal world wouldn't require anyone to risk their health or life for music, hence "no sacrifice".
However, would it really be "paradise"? The sudden switch from white to black here feels ominous. While on the white background, the members have their eyes closed, as if dreaming, while when they open their eyes, the mood changes dramatically. It might be showing the contrast between their 'dream' and the reality of it or what they're doing to achieve it.
If you look closely, there is a round light behind them in both frames (in the second one, it's just very faint). It reminds me of an angel's halo, or perhaps a lamp from a lab.
Tumblr media
High,
High up, come, take my hand
I’ll take you to the top on a rocket
The sky is so far, but it’s no matter
As long as we enjoy ourselves, I don’t care
I've heard the phrase "the sky is far (lit. high up)" in several Japanese songs. It's a metaphor that refers to your dreams and goals seeming very far away and difficult, or even impossible to reach, like the sky above us.
However, Rokuta isn't going to be bothered by it! It's too far? Let's make a rocket!
At first, I took this verse as an encouragement directed at 1Nm8's listeners, but now, after listening to the SHOWDOWN drama, I think it might actually be meant for Itsuki. I loved how he cheered Itsuki on and looked out for him before they met Kei. It gave more depth to their relationship, and showed it's not just Itsuki taking care of Rokuta, but a give and take.
Why are you making a sad face?
Even if this world seems like a nightmare
I will give you a ticket out of here
And see it through till the end
I added "out of here" to the "I will give you a ticket" line because I feel like it's strongly implied by context of the verse and the whole song, like in "Let's escape this twisted world" in the chorus.
Like I mentioned at the start, Rokuta is the one who notices things like sadness and hopelessness and offers comforting words, which is difficult for the other two.
I think this verse is also for Itsuki. It reminds me of how Rokuta immediately noticed Itsuki was in a bad shape after they left the facility, overwhelmed by the outside world.
However, the imagery for the line "And see it through till the end" seems strange to me. It was the basis for my theory about Rokuta's memory loss, which you can read here.
Tumblr media
The screen splits into 7 or 8 parts (if you count the one mostly off screen) and both Rokuta's image AND the words are repeated. It's as if the promise itself was repeated many times in the past - which could be because Rokuta kept forgetting it.
No matter if it was by chance or fate
To embody the vision pictured in our minds
The emphasis from the heavy bass serves as a foundation
For thousands of harsh decisions
Tumblr media
I see this verse as Itsuki describing his role in 1Nm8 and his relationship with Kei. In SHOWDOWN, Itsuki says he feels 1Nm8 meeting and Kei's power working on him and Rokuta is fate.
1Nm8 is meant to realize Kei's vision, and he is the one making the "harsh decisions". 低音, bass, can also be translated as "low voice", and Itsuki's voice is the lowest of the three. I interpret this verse as Itsuki declaring he's rapping to support Kei's cause.
I'mma show you how
They need the dope shit
Precise rhythm and melody
I’mma show you how
With one-of-a-kind technique
Steadily eaten away by the toxic
They need the dope shit
Tumblr media
The “toxic” is obviously the Phantometal. means "to affect adversely; to spoil; to ruin; to undermine; to gnaw at (one's heart, body, etc.); to eat into; to destroy" [2], which accurately describes the Metal's effects.
Yeah, History is
In the making
We're gonna be

Kei sings the same pre-chorus Rokuta does for the first half of the song, interestingly, with the same background imagery. I think it's meant to show their connection, and maybe hint at Rokuta's identity as Kei's missing brother (back when FATE released, we didn't know for sure).
(Chorus repeats)
手っ取り早く we show and prove
Anything we need, we can obtain
Quick and easy, We show and prove
Eliminate all unnecessary steps
Proceed according to the plan
Tumblr media
With you, you, you そんなplan
My heart pounds in joy everyday
In a daze, I get closer to the atmosphere
If it flutters down in the wind, play back again
With you, you, you, that’s the plan
Tumblr media
While Itsuki's verse is pretty straightforward, reiterating his methods and ambition, Rokuta's is more metaphoric.
I talked about it in my memory loss theory too, but 舞う can mean "whirl in the wind, flutter about, swirl, fly, circle", for example, like cherry blossoms falling. I think here it refers to Rokuta's memories, which scatter once he overused Phantometal again.
Notice that similarly to "See it through to the end", here "You" is repeated. I interpret the lines as Rokuta saying if he ends up losing his memories once more, he wants to "play back" - start over with 1Nm8.
I'm not preparing a sad ending
I will show you what the world should be
This is a signpost
So, let's go
Tumblr media
The literal translation of the second line of this verse would be "I will show you a correct (righteous, lawful) world".
This typography in this verse gives it a lot of urgency, and the way the characters rapidly flicker during the lines "This is a signpost / So, let's go" is sinister. It feels like Kei is close to the edge.
What comes next is even more sinister, however.
Tumblr media
The chorus repeats again, but muffled, with a gray, staticky filter put over it. The moment where Kei is only partly visible through the kanji for 覚悟 (resolution, preparedness) but without his face now looks legitimately scary.
Tumblr media
I found this part of the song unsettling ever since I first saw it, but I still can't quite put a finger on it. The filter makes me think of a feeling of shock after hearing or experiencing something that really rattles you, or numbness from too much pain. It might also evoke the feeling of muted "unrealness" when you are having a nightmare.
Tumblr media
Do you have any other ideas? While I can't be sure what this means for Kei and 1Nm8 yet, I can tell it's nothing good.
Then, the second half of the chorus plays as normal, and the MV ends with the members in the same scenery we saw at the beginning. But can we still look at it the same way?
Tumblr media
Final thoughts
Based on the muted filter, other symbolism and imagery in the MV: the double meaning of white, the black and white contrast, as well as Kei 'walking into hell' I'd say an important theme in edN is "becoming evil to fight evil" and the dangers of it. It's presented mostly visually, but I think it compliments the atmosphere in the drama track for FATE, especially the latter half. I want to make my own translation of it; I will link it here when it's completed.
Please don't take this analysis wrong! I'm a huge 1Nm8 fan and I voted for them both times. I think the element of darkness makes them more interesting.
Not that I am not worried, however 。

Let's Try - English Cover
*use earphones!! it doesn't hit the same otherwise since I listened that way when mixing lol*
I covered the OFTS song!! I honestly wasn’t sure how it would go since this is a tricky number (and a little on the low side for me) but I’m really hyped with the result all things considered, and the process was really enjoyable! I ended up singing in both the original octave and a higher octave that was easier for me to reach, then mixed those together, for the most part using the lower sections as accents. Happily I could actually reach the high “on fire!!!” note with no issues, which I wasn’t sure about going in. I also recorded a TON of harmonies to choose from and I love the slight discordance and chaos in this rendition, which I felt worked well with the drama-disaster vibe of Only Friends. Sound mixing is a lot of fun for me, and this was no exception. This project was 12 tracks high and I’m very proud of it. I love how the last few choruses keep getting more complex, too.
The translation process was also extremely fun!
A few lines are the same or similar to the available translation, but a lot of it I re-translated myself, going line by line through the Thai lyrics. As always, I wanted to stay as true to the original meanings as I could (not that I can claim perfect understanding ofc) as well as make the new lyrics flow and make sense in English, while ALSO attempting to follow closely to the original sounds and rhymes of the Thai lyrics. I did end up realizing one line in the chorus could’ve worked much better in that regard—by changing one line to “if you’re down, then don’t be shy,”—but I tried re-recording with that alternate line and it just wasn’t easy enough to hear in English? It kind of blended away, at least when placed into my project as an afterthought, so I stuck with my original mix. Also I had Ray in my mind the whole time I was working on these lyrics haha. After that I made a lil lyrics video (pretend the soundwave visual didn’t get shifted off beat I didn’t wanna re-export asdfg) and here ya go! My first fanwork of the new year :)

Adonis Solo- Burning Body Translation
Tumblr media
This BURNING BODY won’t stop it’s relentless tirade
With this ravenous flame that’s Ambitious
I’ll let this ferocious blood rush all throughout my body
This society’s discrimination,
It’s a boundless prison we’re all controlled by
Operating in all-to-see broad daylight
Yet, even still such ego won’t stop growing
You just can’t give it up
Letting yourself engrave it into your real life
This BURNING BODY won’t stop it’s relentless tirade
With this ravenous flame that’s Ambitious
Even in an illogical society that refuses to show me love, I’ll be Ready to Fight
Setting myself ablaze, BURNING BURNING, Indulging in this undying flame
I’ll let this ferocious blood rush all throughout my body
Letting the meaning of life run through my veins I’m ALIVE
Endless difficulties, it’s all excuses1, it must be that troublesome Bad timing, right?
I must persist in my determination, only then will the right path will open up for me
My strength’s sole, will drown all my weakness
I’ve been given power to suppress overconfidence
And to stand resolute in adversity
Raging BURNING BODY
This passionate pulsation is Ambitious
Such apathetic hegemony with an uncaring society, I’m Ready to fight
I’ll set myself ablaze, BURNING BURNING, Indulging in this undying flame
All your hatred, I’ll make it my fuel to keep moving
Shouting with all my being the meaning of this life, I’m ALIVE
Experience will be our power, despair will be our flesh
When we’re in the heat of the moment, we’ll use our experience as strength
And despair too, it will serve as our very flesh.
In this hell’s flame, we are ALIVE
This BURNING BODY won’t stop it’s relentless tirade
With this ravenous flame that’s Ambitious
Even in an illogical society that refuses to show me love, I’ll be Ready to Fight
Setting myself ablaze, BURNING BURNING, Indulging in this undying flame
I’ll let this ferocious blood run all throughout my body
Raging BURNING BODY
This passionate pulsation is Ambitious
Such apathetic hegemony with an uncaring society, I’m Ready to fight
Setting myself ablaze, BURNING BURNING, Indulging in this undying flame
With all my relentless ambitions, as fuel
I’ll continue to live with everything I’ve got, I’m ALIVE
Not part of the original plain text; however it is an interpretation of the
dialogue to make what he is saying clearer (in relation to a translation).

So...I translated a Black Friday song
Do You Want to Play? is one of my favorite song in the Black Friday soundtrack and one of my favorite Starkid one. So, since it's an also relatively easy short one, I decided to translated in French, for fun.
Lyrics below the cut :
Petite fille ?
Trésor ?
Californie ?
Veux-tu jouer à un jeu ?
Adorable enfant, adorable enfant.
Veux-tu quelques bonbons ?
Ma tendre enfant, ma tendre enfant
Jouons ensemble

Dutch translation of Bug
Credit: shoppingcart
Ahh!
Kijk, het is een bu-bu-bug
Ver-ver-vertraging, looptijd vertraging…
Lo-lo-logboek, een logboek van rebellie
Bu-bu-bug, pa-ppa-pa-la-pa; pa-paranoia,
Pa-paranoia,
Pa-paranoia, nee, nee, NEE!!!
Kijk, het is een bu-bu-bug, nu, een bug, bug, alle reden dat ik had is oversluwd in duisternis, nee, nee, nee… nu, nu, nu;
Oh nee, oh nee, oh nee, oh nee, oh nee, oh nee, oh nee, oh nee, oh nee!

Fiery Scream | Rei Solo Translation
Before I knew it, I'd already grown accustomed to being thirsty While walking down this road with no hope for change I don't look back on the memories I left behind in distant days My heart is frozen, living each day devoid of any stimulation The screams calling for me gave me passion And revived my soul With that passionate¹ voice, sear into me A fire that will never go out again Please share it with me, light it in my heart It grows with my thirst, a craving² Which touches the back of my throat³, an unquenchable impulse Even pain turns into a sweet aphrodisiac⁴ ...which I'll return to you
Staring at the wedge driven into the meaning of life I spent yesterday decaying into apathy The feelings I'm now capable of were given shape by you Carrying both sins and freedom, living each day seeking stimulation I've been awakened by those screams which make my wounds ache And remind me of my soul All you have to do is listen and tremble with pleasure So much so that it drives you mad with desire I'll show you all my selfishness You'll accept it with your whole body, won't you? Whenever I drink from the unbridled passion deep within you It gives me joy...which I'll return to you "I'm buried in boredom, I don't mind even if it ends" If you can no longer bear to think that way Then it's best to turn those feelings into screams Call for me, with that passionate voice of yours Transform my life, let it be reborn I'll show you all my selfishness You'll accept it with your whole body, won't you? For the craving which kindled my passion I'll repay you with a singing voice sweeter than any aphrodisiac
¹ 熱い (atsui) is both "passionate" and, quite literally, "hot." So, y'know. Fire puns! ² The word used here is 欲望 which is like…so, so sexually charged. It's pretty much identical to the word "lust" in that 90% of the time, people are using it to mean sexual desire, but it can also just mean a passionate desire for anything in general. I'm going with craving here to keep in line with the whole "thirst" theme present throughout the song
³ 喉元 is "throat," but 喉 alone can be throat or "singing voice," so this + the previous line together sounds very much like "It grows with my thirst, a desire to sing which becomes an unquenchable impulse." Given the context of the song, this wordplay seems intentional.
⁴媚薬 can be either "aphrodisiac" or "love potion," so... Pick your poison. I went with aphrodisiac here since the rest of the song is so dang sexually charged

I tried to translate 『Suteki na Jumon』 !
Tumblr media
[ official jacket illustration source ]
★ Disclaimer: I'm an english speaking casual student of the language and my translation is in no way anything but amateur, I mainly rely on kanji dictionaries and researching individual syntax with very slight MTL assistance. I started to translate Ikigusare songs late last year for myself in order to simply gain a personal understanding of the music and thought I'd share what I have for others now that the idols are finding traction in western spaces. very open to critique!

『Wonderful Incantation』 English Translation [ original lyrics and singable romaji ]
If you cried because you were sad, if you wanted to run away because it was so painful If it was so difficult you couldn’t speak, or so distressing you couldn’t move Try chanting this wonderful incantation and open the door to a world of delight

If you moistened your pillow with a worn out love, self immolated with a violent jealousy If you feel the urge to kill, or if you curse this entire world Try chanting this wonderful incantation and the end will peacefully start
Iä! Iä! Hastur! Hastur cf’ayak ’vulgtumm, vugtlagln, vulgtmm! Ai! Ai! Hastur! Outer space split apart and something strange emerged

researching specific Lovecraftian chants was so exhausting, the romanisation ends up reading in a pretty funny way!

Can I just say that I’m glad to see more fans of datsugoku here? LIKE ITS SO SO GOOD AND GOD SO TRAGICC THEY DESERVED BETTER!! Also also your analysis on Oktavia’s cover was FUCKING AMAZING HOLY HELLL/pos
(If anyone’s curious about the song mentioned here, note that the first link’s music video contains flashing lights and rapid motions, and the themes include violence and character death)
Thank you so much!! I really love Datsugoku’s MV for telling such a story in a mere 3 minutes and 47 seconds while combining music/lyrics/visuals together well. I remember how I used to really look up to sidu for her work on Datsugoku, particularly for its lighting and video editing haha. Over the years her artstyle has changed but Datsugoku is one of my favourite “phases” of her art style I’d say
(I think to this day if I’m trying to get someone into Neruke I’d just send them the MV haha)
But as a song it’s just really cool to listen to as well. The riff at the start, that guitar solo in the middle (I wrote a post about my interpretation of the solo’s narrative significance) IT’S SO GOOD. One of the best—or most memorable?—solos Neru has written I think. I like that you can get one interpretation based on the music/lyrics themselves, and another slightly different interpretation based on the MV (since what’s described in the lyrics don’t exactly match what’s happening on-screen even though they’re describing the same event.) This mismatch (?) in how the media forms are staggered (?) is so cool, like when the LYRICS say (using my translation)—
.
Slamming down on the rusted throttle
with all that I’ve got—
so hard that I’d break my bones—
Right now, let’s break through reality
.
—but the ANIMATION shows the moments before, where Kawasemi throws the knife to rip off Kuina’s blindfold, mouthes something in a cocky way, and runs away to start the chase…!
-
(Note that the next link here goes to a post which links to a video with flashing lights and rapid motions.)
AH speaking of a tragic ending that deserved better, back in 2021 I was able to participate in a Neruke 10th anniversary fan medley MV, and did the illustration for Datsugoku! The section chosen was of course the very guitar solo itself so I tried to depict a scene of freedom and happiness in the illustration. Whether the smiling and relaxed Kawasemi is alive in the illustration is up to interpretation, haha…
It’s to match lyrics like—(note that this section of the lyrics kiiind of alludes to metaphoric drugs, and again character death)—
.
“Increasing the altitude without a change in your expression, you laugh”
.
and
.
“As the engine heats up, I don’t care about what’s happening to the plane’s body, so high I was in the blue heavens”
.
UE UE UE KAWASEMI YOU BASTARD WITH NO SELF-PRESERVATION (affectionate). Looking at it again, as a loanword from English,トリップして (trip-shite) likely refers to tripping (on drugs)… as in he’s in such a state of ecstasy—in seventh heaven, if you will—it’s like he’s high. ….oh my god hence Oktavia’s line:
.
“Though the engine overheats, the plane begins to dive / I don’t care, it’s right in front of me / The Seventh Heaven finally on the bright side”
-
(Long ramble about Oktavia’s lyrics, Japanese lyrics, English translyrics, melody, and phonology here)
As for my initial reaction Oktavia’s encore cover, thank you!! As I’ve mentioned in the reaction/analysis post I really like how she writes lyrics. Rhythmically, I’ve realized that it’s not just about fitting the Japanese lyrics’ syllables to English words while retaining the meaning, it’s about sonority (relative loudness of a speech sound) and how the sonority of the English lyrics should sound with the melody—and as a poet and occasional (English cover) lyricist who tries to rhyme and keep the rhythm, THAT’S REALLY DIFFICULT. I think… a vocal melody written for a song in Japanese would probably take advantage of how Japanese is mostly consonant-vowel (e.g. Datsugoku can be split up to da-tsu-go-ku, but don’t quote my on the technicalities), but rewrite the lyrics to English without thinking of rhythm and suddenly it’s hard to sing lyrics when they’re all mushed together, be it because the sonority just don’t work, or that there are too many consonants…
For example, it’s easier to sing
.
(Ano koro bokura yume o miteita nda)
.
than it is to sing, say,
.
“Back then the two of us would dream of better lives than this”
.
even though the syllable count matches (do you know how hard it was to intentionally write a line that’d mess with the syllabic stress in relation to the melody)
SO THAT’S WHY I LOVE OKTAVIA’S LYRIC
.
“Tell me you remember when we’d dream of another life.”
.
The way the consonants at the ends of the words follow the vowels at the beginning of the next word makes it flow SO WELL. It seems she writes the lyrics based more on the melody’s ups-and-downs itself instead of the Japanese syllables, if that makes sense?
Oktavia’s mentioned something similar about rhyming and syllables in Japanese vs English lyrics once
.
“it is interesting though that rhyming is so integral to english lyrics but like in other languages (japanese) that sort of culture doesn't exist
my theory is that it's because english has so many different pronunciations to learn rhymes are more appealing 'cause they're rarer? vs japanese where because of the syllable system you can write lyrics that rhyme MUCH easier so it's not as prioritized???? idk”
.
The syllable system in Japanese is different from English so maybe it sounds nice in English when a (relatively) complicated syllabic system suddenly has rhymes where it usually wouldn’t…?
Ahaha, anyway, thank you for the ask! I was able to ramble about Datsugoku’s lyrics and gain more insight on the song even after a year…

S∀G∀ Lyrics Translation & Song and MV Analysis
I’ve translated the lyrics and made an in-depth analysis of S∀G∀ by 1Nm8, including the song lyrics, the imagery used in the MV, and how they’re connected.
The analysis will contain heavy, unmarked spoilers for the 1Nm8 “SHOWDOWN” drama track, which I translated in full here.
Tumblr media
The following analysis is fully subjective. You’re free to interpret any parts of the song and MV differently. I share it in the hope that my musings will prove interesting, and because the depth and effort put into this song and MV blew my mind.
I made my own translation of the lyrics based on the original Japanese text to use in the analysis.
Imagery:
The motifs and symbols repeating through the MV are: the color green, plants and flowers, and crystals.
The color green is most associated with Itsuki, and a lot of the symbolism seems to be connected to him and his experiences this time. This goes in line with Itsuki’s verse kicking off the song and him playing an important role in the drama track.
I believe that green in the MV may symbolize one’s real, “natural” self, most generally speaking. For Itsuki, it’d be his emotions, for Rokuta, his memories.
1Nm8 causing flowers to bloom over lab floors and sitting in a flower field would represent them healing themselves and others.
Tumblr media
During Itsuki’s verse, the imagery alludes to the Alter Trigger labs and experiments performed on him. During the verses “Something I lost / A feeling I can’t explain” we see a green crystal shattering into pieces.
Tumblr media
Next, we see near transparent crystals with little bits of green at the bottom locked in test tubes, as if the aim of the experiment was to drain the “green” from the “crystals”. The crystals would be the experiment subjects’ hearts/minds, losing themselves and becoming broken if they resist.
Tumblr media
However, the three large floating crystals that appear repeatedly and are connected by some sort of a ring would represent 1Nm8 and their healing connection (they’re all green!). I do notice there’s four crystals in the picture, but I don’t have a definite explanation: it might be a symbol for Rokuta not identifying with his past self, Minori, because of his memory loss or foreshadowing for something we don’t know yet.
Itsuki’s verse:
It hit me like a gunshot
The sensation that remains in my hand
It hit me like a gunshot
The memories burned in me are monochrome
As if they’ve been painted over
Tumblr media
The imagery going with the verses “The sensation that remains in my hand / It hit me like a gunshot” shows Itsuki’s phantometal, the Geometric Square Tattoo, which means they describe how the metal was implanted in him and its effects.
The word “塗りつぶす”, paint over, can have another negative connotation, meaning “cover up the truth”, like the emotions associated with Itsuki’s memories being blocked out and the way he perceives the world with his senses changing.
Let’s get on
Something I lost
A feeling I can’t explain
Unneeded interference from the unknown
Look, here we’re the weirdos
We’ll proceed logically, Let’s get on
The tree might be a special symbol relating to Itsuki. We do not know if “Itsuki” is his real name or if it’s the name he received (or picked, based on his test subject number) at the facility; the way it is written in canon, using katakana, doesn’t reveal the intended meaning.
However, the name Itsuki can be written with the character 樹, meaning trees, wood.
Tumblr media
In the MV, we see the tree behind Itsuki, obscured; then Itsuki separated from the tree with a transparent cylinder, then finally, Itsuki sitting at the foot of the tree, among flowers.
Tumblr media
Itsuki being shut off from the tree while the verse “As if it’s been painted over” plays - he’s separated from his emotions, and how he used to see the world.
Nah mean
The world we stepped into
Is nothing but distorted Nah mean
Each time you take a snapshot
You see nothing but senseless acts
Here, I believe that Itsuki is no longer rapping about the facility - but the world outside it. That’s what the line “The world we stepped into” implies. The outside world he and Rokuta chose wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows; it’s overwhelming and twisted.
Tumblr media
If plants in the MV represent the real selves of the experiment victims, then the saplings here would be the released victims taking part in the government program - small, because they’re just “growing”, learning how to be themselves again. However, they’re doing it in a locked up, controlled environment, like an incubator machine. To Itsuki, that’s not much better than what they’ve just escaped. Like he said in the drama track, “To be controlled again by anyone else would be intolerable.”
The imagery of the incubator machine appears again in the chorus, as the line “In the tainted soil”, sung by Itsuki, plays - Itsuki sees the outside world who does things like locking up the victims again as tainted.
We can do it non-stop uh
I don’t know
A peculiar sensation
The temperature I’ve never felt before
We can do it non-stop uh
It may be a miracle, I don’t know
I think these verses refer to 1Nm8 and their relationship. The “peculiar sensation” is expressed with a word that can mean something strange, difficult to understand in a logical or scientific way, but also something rare and excellent.
“Temperature” makes you think about physical contact and warmth, like from holding hands, which 1Nm8 have done on more than one occasion.
A “miracle” is an unusual thing for Itsuki to talk about, as he tries to approach everything logically. A sign of his outlook changing shows the impact of 1Nm8 on him.
Chorus:
It’s going down
It’s true, true
I can see clearly now
Yeah
Yeah as long as we focus, It’s going down
It’s true, true, just as always
Little by little, I can see clearly now
Yeah
The line “Little by little, I can see clearly now” by Rokuta might reference his memories returning bit by bit.
何度もbreak down and 創り上げた
Written in sand slipping away
A poem of fleeting love
Broken down and remade countless times
In order to prove that
The imagery of sand, together with the word "fleeting" makes me think of a hourglass, and time running out. It may be the limited time they have to change things before phantometal claims more victims, or the limited time they have in general...
"Uta" sounds like the word for "song", but the kanji used actually means poem. There's a pattern of referring to written word instead of music in the song - the word SAGA, 書き足す later in the chorus, using the kanji for write, "drama", a written work.
The beautiful flower
We must have the power
The beautiful flower will wither one day
To sprout once again in the tainted soil
We must have the power to win the game
Keep writing the saga
Until it becomes a joyful drama
Before the Drama Track came out, I thought the withering flower was a part of the imagery of fleeting things relating to Itsuki’s and Rokuta’s health, but after listening to it, I believe the “beautiful flower” is actually Kei.
Tumblr media
In the hospital scene, when Kei falls asleep on his shoulder, Itsuki says that “Things that are too beautiful are also fragile” and that he’s terrified of Kei breaking one day. There’s also the symbolism of plants - they’re what’s true and pure in the world, the opposite of people in the labs.
Also, if you look closely, the flower is pink, a similar shade to Kei’s hair. It's shape is even a bit similar to Kei's hairstyle!
Kei’s verse:
It’s sky high
We fly high
Y’all never shoot me down
It’s sky high, the place in our sights
Towards the holy land that’s calling us
We fly high
Y’all never shoot me down
This verse contains references to religious imagery that Kei often uses - he compares the changes they want to carry out to entering  paradise and leading people there.
Tumblr media
Birds are a common symbol for freedom, too, like freedom from the influence of phantometal on their lives that 1Nm8 is seeking.
Deep wounds and aching pain
With mere numbers as his name
Warding off the dirt falling as rain
What a pain, it’s all the same
I think just as the tree may be a special symbol connected to Itsuki, the others also have a plant or arrangement of plants associated with them. For Rokuta, it’d be the vertical garden with ferns, which often appears in the background behind him. However, as the line “Warding off the dirt” plays, Kei is shown in front of it while something like a scanner device is running, a wall of light passing through.
Tumblr media
If we assume the vertical garden is a symbol for Rokuta’s real self, this scene looks like someone is looking for traces of Kei in his lost memory. The “dirt” falling down is the corruption affecting them or Rokuta specifically.
This verse (together with the Drama track) shows that Kei’s feelings about Rokuta’s name are complicated. It’s not like he doesn’t care that his little brother’s name and identity was taken away from him. We see Rokuta blurred and far away, and looking closely, the circle of light at his feet is covered by a shadow much closer to the screen, like someone’s shoulder. I think that might be Kei’s shadow, watching his little brother fade out of view, far away from him. He found Rokuta, but in a way, not Minori.
Tumblr media
In the story, Kei chooses to call Rokuta by his new name, but I see it as a sign of respect and love towards him, not that Kei doesn’t care one way or the other. During the piano scene in the drama track, Kei almost calls him Minori when overcome with emotion, but corrects himself. He makes a conscious choice for Rokuta’s sake.
It could also symbolize how the scientists were dehumanizing Rokuta by referring to him with a number. Faces and eyes are connected to perceiving another person’s humanity, so they get blurred as Rokuta is treated like an object. The word choices by Kei in this verse, different than his usual beautiful language - annoyance/ a pain, dirt - verse show his hidden anger about the issue.
Yeah, we did it again
Yeah yeah yeah
Yeah, we did it again
The conviction we speak of is always brand new
Yeah yeah yeah
I am not sure here, but I think “brand new” might possibly reference the concept of “original intention” or “initial resolution” in Japanese It’s the feeling when you’ve just started on something and you’re full of enthusiasm and belief in what you’re doing, the opposite of being jaded and discouraged.
Rokuta’s verse:
You & me, floating like soap bubbles
No matter how much we play, don’t worry, it’s an amusement park
FREEDOM
Seesaw game on the edge
This verse seems to refer to Rokuta and Itsuki (“you & me”), their precarious situation as former test subjects and their choices from there on. Soap bubbles are something short-lasting and incredibly fragile.
We see a scene that parallels one from Itsuki’s verse. Rokuta gets locked in a cylinder in the lab while a computer on the wall is obtaining data. What’s more, if you look closely, in the background there’s something like a semi-transparent window and a blurry outline of a tree (seen in the background of Itsuki’s lab cylinder scene) can be seen. This possibly shows Rokuta and Itsuki being a part of different experiments at the same time.
Tumblr media
In the SHOWDOWN drama CD, Rokuta says he and Itsuki “chose freedom” over living at another facility for the victims with government support.
ギリギリ in Japanese describes a situation where you just barely make it, and there’s a danger of failing.
Tumblr media
A seesaw goes back and forth, just like how performing in Paradox live can either cause the phantometal influence to hurt Rokuta and Itsuki (and by extension, Kei, who deeply cares about both), or it might ease the adverse effects of the metal through the healing properties of Kei’s music.
That's nice, if it's fun fun
We should do it again, twice is better than once
Everyone, gather in the paradise called edN
I’m sorry, but I have no intention of letting go
I want to keep dancing until this sound stops
This part always sounds ominous to me. What sound, Rokuta? What sound? Surely, you wouldn’t mean something like your heartbeat?
Interpreting “this sound” as Kei’s music isn’t much better, because Kei has previously tried to quit music under the weight of guilt for using phantometal when it hurt Rokuta and Itsuki this much. It might just mean the end of a particular song, but Rokuta’s verse has so many concerning flags for their future I can’t help but worry about this one, too.
Before the chorus repeats again, we're shown flying birds again, more symbolism for freedom, but also a blooming white flower.
Tumblr media
I believe showing these motifs one after the other isn't accidental, but is meant to create a connection between them. If birds flying mean freedom and positive continuation of their "saga", then flowers blooming mean the same.
Tumblr media
It matches up with the interpretation that plants growing and flowers blooming in the MV represent healing and breaking free from the past.
This analysis was very fun to do, but it still took a lot of effort to research for and compile, so if you liked it I appreciate it if you showed it some love! I plan to analyze other 1Nm8 songs in the future, so stay tuned.
