LILY’s RELTIONSHIPS WITH THE DREAMIES

so their ship name is just his full name LMAO

they love it

so yknow how dream clowns mark?

obviously she does too

but she’s more gentle and has a TON of respect for mark

like she had to move her mic because it was so bad

mark isn’t too big on the pda but when they’re together he always lets his baby sister give him so many hugs

when sm told them that mark was coming back and they were a fixed unit ... god she cried a lot then too

Ah yes, I'm starting this fic without even having an idea what the middle will be, Lol. How I love that. Right now I have this fic in plan and one for the Snow Queen fandom (Which practically is dead or is alive, but in Russian only) so I'm giving it here a try as I actually planned to start this one first and Snow Queen just fell into my life by accident. (As usual, a ship pulled me into the fandom along with Amy MacDonald because why not?) (I also have the interest in a Crossover between MLB and SNow Queen, because I just love the idea of RollanxGerda with their elemental powers as superheroes in a lovesquare too xD I need to outline that once I got ideas.

- All mentioned offsprings, classmates, and random are actual OC's of mine.

Nathaniel Kurtzberg sat on the couch of the Kurtzberg household face timing with his wife Lila Kurtzberg, which was out for a few months in Italy due to her work as an actress.

„Today really was now the last day of our recordings here. Tomorrow in the morning I will catch the train to head back to Paris. That one will go directly to France and has only one stop in Turin," Lila explained making Nathaniel nod.

„How many episodes are now in front of me until the one you recorded today?"

„Uhm I think you have 18. We are currently at 42. But you will enjoy the last few episodes, cause my character Isabella will......nah I can't spoiler you that, but you will be surprised," Lila quoted making Nathaniel frown.

„Oh now I'm curious,"

„Hey, I already told you why I had to dye my hair in black and brown lens. You have to wait for it along with the other viewers,"

„Can I at least know if it will end in a cliffhanger?"

„Duh of course. It's the end of the season, that's to keep the tension high," Lila answered. „But I can tell you there will be a few new faces and one of them you may recognize very well,"

„Who? Any of your aunts?" Nathaniel questioned making Lila shake her head.

„No it's Wayhem," Lila responded. „He will have a minor role as a class clown. He is actually pretty decent for that role. At least in the tryouts he was,"

„Thanks to Gabriel he made it there too. That's actually cool,"

„It really is," Lila agreed.

From behind the couch where Nathaniel sat appeared a small girl, which jumped up at the couch on Nathaniel causing him to yelp and the girl with the long brown hair looked at the smartphone to see the raven-haired woman on the other side of the electronic device.

„Hi mama" The girl greeted her mother, which smiled enchanted at seeing the daughter on her husband's lap.

„Hi bella, where have you been?" Lila asked at the sudden appearance of the girl.

„I think Nathalie was working on something special for you," Answered the redhead gazing into the blue eyes of the daughter, which winked back at the man. „But as it is a surprise you can't know it until you're here," „You two are being really mean," Lila joked crossing her arms pretending to be mad at the decision of the two blue-eyed family members.

„Come on pumpkin. You'll see it tomorrow when you get back. I'm sure it will blow your mind, right Nathalie?" Nathaniel asked earning a nod from the daughter.

„Well then the only thing I have to do is to wait until tomorrow," Lila added earning a nod from Nathaniel. „Has anything special changed during the time I was gone?"

„Well, what happened.....yes Sabrina is pregnant. I've heard that from Adrien. Adrien has next Friday his exam again, which he had failed two times before and I think that's it so far. Tomorrow also I will attend the first school day of Nathalie along with Luka and Kagami with their son,"

„That's great Nathy, and Nathalie I don't know what your dad said, but don't forget to brush your teeth before going to bed," Lila warned earning a nod from Nathaniel.

„We took care of it. I promised to let her watch your show tonight if you're okay with it,"

„Okay. It's actually rated 13+, but just the last few episodes I would rather not let her watch,"

„Okay it's fine," Nathaniel responded. "I'm here for her,"

„Look I'm finishing the call for now. I'm going to visit Nana before leaving,"

„Okay, be careful," Nathaniel warned making Lila chuckle.

„Don't worry with Trixx around me, I'm safe," Lila assured earning a nod from the husband.

„See you tomorrow,"

„Bye Nathy," Lila said sending Nathaniel an air kiss, then Nathaniel turned the call off and picked the remote to turn the TV on, which was showing a commercial of Wayhem holding a cereal package in his hands.

„Nutty by Nature. The new cereals for young and teens containing almonds, raisins, and walnuts. Try it out. This may contain nuts and gluten. Suggested to be served with milk or yogurt,"

„Isn't that the cereal you wanted to try out?" Nathaniel questioned sitting up on the couch, followed by Nathalie which sat beside the father.

„No, it had Ladybug on it," Nathalie mentioned earning a nod from the redhead.

„Okay, we can see it next Wednesday during shopping," Nathaniel said, then watched on the TV the logo of an Italian studio appear, then Nathaniel placed his hand on his daughter's shoulder. „Look Nathalie the show is about to start," Nathaniel said putting the TV a little louder as the logos had played a 90th themed song in the background and showed a coyote near a road in the middle of the desert howl leading to the start of the intro and a car pass by on the road, then the theme song of the show began to play which was a pop-rock remix making Nathalie dance with her head amused at the song.

„Cool," Nathalie commented afterward she smiled brightly as she recognized in the intro her mother walk towards the camera, then under her married full name was blended in and Nathalie looked up at Nathaniel, which smiled at seeing her name on the screen.

„And what do you think of mom?" Nathaniel questioned. „Doesn't she look beautiful there?"

„She is very beautiful, dad," Nathalie agreed lying her head on the father's shoulder looking at the screen seeing a different actress with a similar body and facial structures as Lila strutt towards the camera and an Italian name appear under the woman's name.

„That woman there plays the younger version of your mom," Nathaniel pointed out earning a nod from the daughter watching the camera switch back to a male younger, character who also had his actor name announced on-screen through the introduction of the show.

At the mansion of the Agreste's, Adrien Agreste along with his wife Kagami and their common son had made the first steps of their life under the same home they were in since their first part of the education.

Adrien's ten-year-old sister sat in his old bedroom watching TV along with her five-year-old nephew Elliot. The boy Elliot sat interested looking at the movie to see a male character with fire powers throwing it on a trunk to make fire, so a group of kids got reunited around it to heat their hands.

„Rocky the fire guy is so cool," Elliot commented earning a nod from the older niece.

„What about Ally the water girl?" Questioned Hope. „She's also cool,"

„Nah I prefer Rocky," Elliot defended making Hope chuckle, then see an anthropomorphic rabbit push out from the ground two walls to form a tent-like shelter.

At the entrance of the room entered Kagami wearing a white tank top and red shorts as her sleeping outfit, then she made her way towards the couch, where the two blonde Agreste's sat and she placed her hands over on Elliot's shoulder.

„Elliot, it's bedtime," Kagami announced leaning her cheek on Elliot's face making him sad. „Do I really have to go now to bed?" Elliot questioned looking up at Kagami, which nodded.

„It's almost 10 am sweetie and you know tomorrow is your first school day and no one wants to have a tired boy during the class?" Kagami stated tapping the boy on the nose.

„Can I wait until the break?" Elliot questioned watching Kagami look at her watch and at that moment the movie got into a commercial making Hope groan disappointed.

„Not again," Hope complained making Kagami chuckle.

„Look you two, what about tomorrow we all watch that movie you were looking at? You two, me and Adrien?" Suggested Kagami earning a nod from the two blondes.

„Where's Adrien?" Hope asked watching Kagami open the TV guide to check the movie title. „I haven't seen him since dinner,"

„Your brother is studying for the big exam. You know after the last two times he failed he isn't really easy to convince to stop or take a break,"

„Dad is studying too much, mom," Elliot mentioned earning a nod from the mother, which helped her son down from the couch.

„Learning about medicine isn't for everyone. Even if Daddy is giving his best," Kagami mentioned earning a nod from Elliot.

„Will school tomorrow be hard for me?" Elliot asked making Kagami shake her head.

„No, it's very easy if you pay attention and if there is something you don't understand you can always ask your teacher at the school or us," Kagami said watching Elliot grab her hand, then Kagami walked out with her son into the corridor to reach the last room, where she got into and was in the bedroom, which got altered after Hope got older and Elliot was born into the Agreste heir. His bedroom contained a bed with a night table beside him and on the left side he had a bookshelf with only a few books on it and the others remained empty for now. On the wall he had four different watches both analog and digital, each of the clocks was adjusted to the European time zone and the Japanese time zone, which had about a difference of 8 hours. Kagami watched Elliot open up the bed for himself and got into it, then grabbed from under his pillow a red panda plush making Kagami smile remembering they had got the animal from their trip to Japan two years ago. Elliot used to sleep with the plush every night after they bought it for him.

Kagami adjusted the covers of the boy and looked at the boy, which smiled at the woman afterward Kagami pecked the boy on the cheek wishing him a good night.

„Good night, my little boy,"

„Good night mom," Elliot wished watching the mother caress the boy on the forehead gently before he closed his eyes, then the woman got up and left the door half-open and walked across the corridor into the bedroom, which now was used by Adrien and Kagami to sleep. Kagami encountered Adrien sitting in front of a desk with his arms on the table reading a book about diseases. Adrien was notably close to falling asleep, then Kagami walked toward the man, which was focused on the book, then Kagami placed her hand on Adrien's shoulder shrieking him along with herself, then Adrien sighed in relief to see it was just his wife.

„Oh it's you Kagami," Adrien mentioned watching Kagami pick up the water glass on the table handing it out to Adrien, which took it to drink,

„I just brought Elliot to bed," Kagami mentioned earning a nod from Adrien, which yawned. „And you better go to bed too, get a good night of sleep, then you wake up, have a walk or a jog, take a shower, have a good breakfast and you continue your work. Give your brain a little more oxygen before you spend another day inside the house. Elliot sort of is right, we barely saw you today,"

„I'm sorry," Adrien apologized getting up walking into the bathroom to wash his face. „I have been focusing a little too much lately on the studies,"

„Half of the summer vacation," Kagami added earning a nod from Adrien, which grabbed a towel to clean his face. „Tomorrow depending on if he receives homework or not I suggested Elliot and Hope to watch the movie they didn't finish watching tomorrow. If you're okay with it, join us watching the movie. So you'll be spending a bit of time together with your son and at the same time you can give your head a break,"

„Sounds like a good idea. What's the movie about?" Adrien asked leaving the bathroom, then removed his t-shirt while Kagami closed the door behind them.

„I don't know, but the main characters seem to be some sort of superheroes with elemental powers," Kagami responded. „I think you may like it as well,"

„Okay, okay. We'll see it then," Adrien spoke getting rid of his trousers as Kagami got into the bed, followed by the blonde, which covered himself with the bed cover and looked around at Kagami, which yawned making Adrien smile and lean his forehead on his wife's, then kissed her on the nose. „Good night,"

„Good night Adrien," Wished Kagami closing her eyes along with Adrien, so they would soon fall asleep.

Luka Couffaine stood in the kitchen of their 3-room apartment putting inside a sandwich grill a piece of toast on each black surface, afterward he added on the front row a slice of cheese and on the top of it, he added ham onto it. Luka closed the grill tight so it would grill the sandwich, so he took the time the device was cooking to store the ingredients back and he took out a pack of orange juice, then filled it into two cups, then brought them to the table. Luka walked out of the kitchen towards the corridor of the apartment to spot his son Rouven Couffaine get out of the bedroom while yawning making Luka smirk.

„Morning champ," Luka greeted the boy, which made his way toward the kitchen. „Did you sleep well?"

„Yes" Rouven responded. „Is mom gone to work?"

„Yes she is, but she told me to give you kisses and wish you a good first school day," Luka mentioned. „And you don't need to worry about it, you will see Elliot and Cody there. At least you will already know two people,"

„Cool," Rouven responded sitting down, then Luka went back to the kitchen to check, if the paninis were done and saw the grill had the green light turned on, then Luka opened it to remove the paninis into a plate and placed it in the middle of the table, so Rouven could take one, while Luka took the other.

„Mmh I love this smell," Rouven commented as he took a bite from his sandwich. „Delicious,"

„What do you think will you learn today at the school?" Luka asked. „Any idea?"

„Math?" Rouven answered.

„What else?"

„Gym. Mom said I needed to pack my gym stuff," Rouven mentioned. „She forgot to help me,"

„Okay, I will help you later with it. You don't know, where mom left your notes for school per coincidence, right?"

„I don't know,"

„Alright, let me just finish my toast and I will see, what you need," Explained the father earning a nod from the boy, then Luka heard his smartphone on the counter begin to play a rock solo, followed by Rouven use his hands to pretend to play a bass, making Luka chuckle, then Luka picked up the smartphone to see his wife's name highlighted over the number.

„Hello Marinette," Luka greeted. „Rouven is already having breakfast,"

„Great, look I forgot to pack Rouven's gym clothing. Can you do that for him?"

„Sure I was about to do that after Rouven mentioned it. Was there anything more on the list except for that and the writing utensils?"

„Uhm the water and the snack box I left it inside the fridge, the writing utensils he's got it inside his satchel, books and booklets he'll receive at the school as they require a certain type of it and that's all so far....oh and the school cone. I have hidden it in the back seat of your car,"

„Okay, I will prepare everything for Rouven. See you later,"

„Bye, I love you,"

„I love you too, Marinette," Luka finished the call, then walked toward the corridor to get to the room of his son to organize the needed school material.

On Monday morning around the 9, Ivan Bruel was reaching along with his son to the elementary school.

„Yes," The boy said, then watched along with the father a black sports car stop, where a man with a mustache sat and from the back seat left a brunette woman together with a blonde girl which carried her backpack, then both made their way to the schoolhouse.

„We seem a little early or everyone else is already here. What do you think of going in to see your classroom?" Ivan asked earning a nod from the boy, then the man accompanied the son to the entrance of the schoolhouse to spot a few more children along with adults surprising Ivan at the number of parents that were present to attend their children's first day of school.

„Wow, there are really many parents present. Have you seen it, Cody?" The strong man asked earning a nod from the brown-eyed boy.

„Yes," Cody responded, then noticed in front of a classroom his father's old classmate Nathaniel Kurtzberg stay looking onto a sheet, while next to him stood Nathalie Kurtzberg holding her school cone tight in her arms.

„Nathaniel, hey!" Ivan called walking along with Cody to the redhead, which smiled and held his hand out to have Ivan slap his hand on the friend. „You're going to the class of Miss.....uh.....Donner. Evangeline Donner,"

„It is Donner like give in French, not Donner like thunder in German?" Nathaniel asked showing his daughter's schedule to the tall man.

„Probably the French version," Ivan mentioned. „Can we go in already?"

„I think so. I just got here," Nathaniel responded entering into the classroom to find a few students present with their parents in the classroom, then Nathaniel widened his eyes as he recognized a few of the parental figures inside the room. „Wow, I know some of those faces look that's Leeton Sakamoto. He plays in the Parisian soccer team," Nathaniel said advising Ivan to look at the second row, where a middle-sized man stood beside the desk looking at his own son, which was showing the adult something.

„Yeah and there's River Langerak the journalist Alya works with," Ivan pointed out watching the woman take a selfie with the raven-haired daughter making Ivan smile at the deed the woman was doing.

„Uh hum," Agreed Nathaniel, then both walked their kids into the class and Nathalie sat down in the third row along with Cody.

„Do you think Elliot and Rouven will be in our class?" Nathalie asked the boy, which shrugged his shoulders.

„I don't know," Cody responded placing his school cone on the table, afterward Nathalie did the same and both leaned their backs against the wall watching a brunette woman enter along with a blonde girl into the class greeting accompanying her to the first row on the left side.

„That girl I saw before as I got here," Cody mentioned. „I think her grandpa is rich. He drives a very fast car,"

„Cool," Nathalie answered, then watched a man dressed in a police suit accompany his raven-haired son, which waved along with the dad at the present citizens, afterward a Rose Lavillant entered into the class making Nathalie smile as she recognized one of her mother's best friend enter along with a white-skinned girl with light blonde hair, making Nathalie curious.

„Whos' that girl?" Nathalie asked making Cody shrug his shoulders. Rose smiled as she recognized Nathaniel and Ivan, then meet up with the guys by embracing both with excitement.

„Oh boys I haven't seen you for so long," Rose began. „How are Lila and Myléne doing?" Questioned the blonde.

„Fine," Both men answered.

„Lila is coming today from Italy from her acting time. Have you per coincidence see the show yet?" Questioned the redhead earning a nod from the petite woman.

„Yes, I've been liking it so far. Juleka mostly," Rose responded. „Oh and I have only told Kagami about it, but I and Juleka finally made it to adopt our first child. Let me introduce you to Eireen. She's originally from Danish descendants, but her parents lost their lives in a......shipwreck,"

„Oh," Both men replied sad, then Rose patted the girl's head making her smile a little.

„She has already been for a month in our house to get to know us better. So far I think she's liking to be with us,"

„If she's interested, she can befriend Nathalie," Nathaniel mentioned. „Nathalie is my daughter. She's sitting right behind you," Explained the redhead watching the blonde girl look back at the brunette girl, which smiled a little shyly at the adopted girl.

„Hi nice to meet you," Eireen said, then Cody got up and showed Eireen the place.

„Hey you can sit with her if you want," Cody offered making Eireen shrug her shoulders.

„You don't have to go for me," Eireen mentioned making Cody shake his head.

„No, it's okay. I'll be sitting somewhere else," Cody explained making Eireen nod and sit down on the chair, followed by Cody picking up the school cone.

„Oh, I forgot your cone. Will you wait here? I will go immediately to the car to get it," Rose said making Eireen nod, then Rose ran out. Nathaniel took out his smartphone to check the time and saw a message from his wife Lila Kurtzberg.

„Are you at the school now?"

Nathaniel went down on his knees, then held his camera to Nathalie making Nathalie jokingly stick out her tongue, followed by Nathaniel making a dorky face so he could take a picture of the two.

„Shall I send it to mom?" Nathaniel asked the girl for permission which nodded, then the father got up to send the image to the mother of the girl.

„Hey Ivan, hey Nathaniel," A voice said, then Nathaniel looked aside to see Luka Couffaine come along with his son followed by Kagami with her boy Elliot.

„Hey Luka," Nathaniel greeted.

„Hey Luka, hey Kagami," Ivan greeted. „Where's Adrien?"

„He stood back to study," Kagami responded. „You know this Friday he's got the exam and hopefully he will pass it this time,"

„Oh right. I really hope he can make it this time," Mentioned the raven-haired man. „It's harsh when all your friends pass but you,"

„Yeah it really is," Kagami said, then she heard someone call her name and she looked across the classroom to see Adrien's old university friend Jin pass by together with his son. „Hey Jin, great to see you,"

„Same Kagami or should I say.....Mrs. Agreste," Jin joked doing to the woman finger pistols making the son look confused at his father's comment.

„Is that a friend of dad?" Elliot asked looking up at the mother making her nod,

„Yeah. He was with your dad in the same class about five years ago," Kagami mentioned. „Dad would probably love to see him again,"

„Let's tell Dad, " Elliot asked watching Kagami place her hand on the boy's shoulder.

„Maybe we can ask Jin to visit us after school," Kagami mentioned then Nathaniel came between the two Agreste's.

„Are you three actually coming tonight to the surprise party?" Nathaniel asked making Kagami wide her eyes and facepalm.

„Kuso, I forgot about it. I promised you to come and I also promised Elliot and Adrien to watch the movie they missed yesterday,"

„On TV?" Nathaniel questioned.

„Yeah, but we can still watch it on replay before 72 hours pass," Kagami mentioned. „I should have written all my promises down on an agenda. I've been so busy lately that I forgot it,"

„It's okay. Can happen," Luka mentioned patting Kagami on the shoulder.

The school bell rang and before the teacher entered a blonde woman entered along with a blonde boy making Luka chuckle along with Ivan, making Kagami and Nathaniel furrow their eyebrows in confusion, then Nathaniel looked at Luka questioningly.

„Hey, you're married," Nathaniel spoke, then Luka hit the friend on the shoulder.

„I know. I'm just laughing cause that's the woman who vaccinated Rouven last time at the doctor," Luka explained, then watched the class teacher enter into the classroom with a suitcase on wheels, then she gazed in surprise as she saw the full class along with their parents.

„Wow, I'm impressed," The teacher commented placing her suitcase beneath her desk. „This is the first time after ten years, where I have so many parents present on their kids' first school day,"

„It's actually a pretty good thing," Jin shouted making a few adults snicker.

„It really is. And you're the father of who?" The teacher asked.

„I'm Jin Norgay, father of Zheng Norgay," The man introduced himself approaching the son, which sat on the table next to a blonde boy.

„Alright so, as this is our very first day of school. We will be spending the first hour getting to know each other. First I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Mrs. Donner. I'm 33 years old and I was born in Bretagne. In my free time, when I'm not working I like to read and play cards with my family," The teacher introduced, then picked up a ball of yarn from her table and held it on the beginning of the threat and threw it at the first student on the first row, which was a raven-haired boy. „So you're the first one to introduce yourself to the class. You don't need to tell a lot. Your name, nationality and maybe what your parents work is a good start," Mrs. Donner suggested earning a nod from the boy.

„Hello everyone. My name is Duarte. Actually, I have two names. I'm called Duarte André. But you all can call me Duarte. Both my parents are police officers, which met at the work. I come from Portugal, but was born here in France," The boy said earning a nod from the teacher.

„And now pass the ball to the person you want and hold the thread," The teacher asked watching the girl threw the ball back at a raven-haired girl, which smiled at the boy.

„My name is Ruby Langerak. Uh.....I'm from many countries somehow....My mother is from Ireland and England. My father from Sweden and Portugal. I'm sort of from all those four countries," Ruby explained making a few students chuckle.

„Wow, that's interesting. Which languages do you speak at the home?"

„English and French for now," Ruby responded. „My mom said maybe later I could learn Swedish as it is similar to English and furthermore if I want to Portuguese,"

„I can teach you," Duarte suggested earning a nod from the raven-haired girl.

„Aww that's sweet," The teacher commented.

„And my mother is a journalist and my father works in a theatre building the stage and other important things," Ruby explained throwing the ball at Cody, which sat behind her.

„Hello my name is Kodiak, but everyone calls me Cody. I'm from France and my mother works as an actress at the theatre and my father works in the kitchen for a house, where only seniors live,"

„A retirement home?" Asked the teacher making Cody shrug his arms.

„Yes Mrs. Donner," Ivan responded making the teacher smile and Cody passed the ball to Elliot, which frowned at Cody's lazy decision.

„My name is Elliot Agreste. My father is French and my mother is Japanese. My mom works in a bureau at the animal rescue center from my father's family and my dad is at home learning for a big exam, so when he passes he can become a doctor,"

„Ah wow, that's a great idol you got there," The teacher complimented making Elliot smile and look up at Kagami, which gave the boy a thumb up. Elliot threw his ball at Nathalie, but it landed in front of Eireen, then she looked at Elliot, which shrugged his shoulders but smiled at the adopted girl to let her take the ball of yarn.

„Hello everyone. My name is Eireen, I'm from Denmark. My parents died a few years ago in a ship like in the movie with the iceberg and I was in an orphanage with other kids and got adopted this year by my mother. This year is a little special to me, cause I have for the first time in my life new people that like me and also I have now two mothers instead," Eireen said, then a few adults looked at each other bewildered at Eireen's situation.

„Did you hear that, she has two mothers" A voice said making Rose swallow at hearing that comment, then Luka noticed it and placed his hand on Rose's shoulder to comfort her.

„That's still amazing Eireen. At least you found two people that are there to help you out and take care of you. That's what matters the most, right Mrs. Donner," Luka stated earning a nod from the teacher.

„Yes you're right Mr.....,"

„Couffaine, Luka Couffaine"

„Yes thank you, Mr. Couffaine "

„Don't worry. You'll know my name in a few years," Luka said jokingly making the teacher chuckle and watch Eireen slide her ball to Nathalie.

„I'm Nathalie Kurtzberg. My dad is from Germany and works in a comic book store. My mother is from Italy and works on a TV show as an actress,"

„Oh is it from the show Isabella – The rebirth?" Questioned the teacher watching Nathalie look up at Nathaniel which nodded.

„I've seen a few episodes. I think I know who your mother is," Mrs. Donner stated watching Nathalie throw her ball across the room at the hands of a blonde girl.

„The name is Debby, short for Deborah. I'm from Spain and Scotland. My mom works as a vet assistant and my father works in a recording studio for music," The girl introduced herself earning a nod from the teacher, then she threw the ball across the room to another boy, which introduced himself to the class too, followed by others students until everyone's turn had passed.

I'm aware that this seems like you'd need to be paying an insane amount of attention to every other's social media activity, and you're right. You would. Which you simply do when you're in deep crush mode.

They ask you to hold out one-on-one more often than groups

Obvious, but like, too obvious to not mention. If they're frequently foregoing the group hangs in favor of solo time with you, they're probably right down to clown, ifyouknowwhatImean. They don't check out their phone

Not much says, "Hmm... They play with their hair

That's Decoding visual communication Basics 101. It might be associated with nerves or subconsciously showing off their shiny coif for you; a sort of peacocking. or even they wish they remembered to pocket a hairgrip this morning. Still! They probably only provides a damn due to your presence.

They consider your needs in little ways

Whether you're with a gaggle or not, they tend to suggest hanging out near your apartment or office. Did you mention en passant that your key chain was broken? Oh, look who just happened to select one up "because it had been near the checkout and that they remembered that yours was broken and it's kinda cute or whatever, no big deal."

They offer to drive or pay

Your friends likely love you an entire lot (and why wouldn't they? You rule), but unless you are a frightening driver or recently got laid off, they're probably not defaulting as your chauffeur or bill-flipper. If you've got a lover who suddenly seems more willing than usual to treat once you hang around, it might be a subtle (if not somewhat antiquated) approach to showing deeper interest.

They seem a touch nervous or flustered

Of course there are the lucky few who have the power to stay cool, calm, and picked up when conversing with a crush, but most of the attribute necessitates a significant case of hysteria when entering an in-depth range of somebody they're crushing on. Next time you're lecture the one that maybe is into, notice of whether or not they're more clumsy than usual or lose track of what they were saying mid-sentence. The tween wondered for a moment if all adults who were in love were cursed to argue with one another, or if she was just unlucky enough to be surrounded time and again by such couples.

“You wouldn’t hit a deer-”

Then again, perhaps that was just more evidence for this curse she believed she could be carrying. She was two for two, so far.

“Well duh, a deer would fuc- fudge up the car.”

Raven rolled her eyes at the Sirens’ antics. Barely self-censoring themselves had proved not nearly an impossible challenge, just one that they had to be careful to keep up.

“And I’ll fudge you up if-”

Though to the layperson it would appear that their voices held all of the venom and contempt one would expect from two peers forced to get along with one another, Raven could feel that undercurrent of concern they held for each other. Which, unlike Constantine and Zatanna on their best days, made for a relationship that stood a much better chance at standing the test of time. Considering their marriage not even 48 hours ago, she hoped that this would continue to be the case. She was growing rather fond of these rogues, after all.

She focused her powers on scooting the tumbleweed discreetly off the road long before Harley had the chance to hit it, or barely miss it by getting them into an accident.

“There. Crisis averted,” she huffed before reaching forward for the dial on the radio once more. Pam swatted at her hands before turning back to her wife to continue their argument. Raven gave the botanist her most scathing glare before sticking her tongue out at the rogue.

“I don’t care if there’s a whole damn line of tumbleweeds across the highway,” she growled lowly, “You will stop for them.”

“I can move them, Pam,” the empath groaned in the backseat, running her hands over her face in exasperation, “Besides, it’s not like we’re running into them every two miles. Don’t get your panties in a twist.”

Harley let out a bark of a laugh as Ivy’s face went flush at the tween’s words. The chlorophyll running through her veins gave her face the lightest of green tinges underneath the spray of freckles on her face.

Raven could barely stop her smile as she felt a trace of anger from the rogue as well, satisfied that she was getting on every last one of the botanist’s nerves.

“Oh man, that was good, kid!” Harley took one hand off the wheel to give a high-five to the empath, before focusing attention back on the road. “She got ya, pumpkin, no ifs, ands, or buts about it!”

“Keep your eyes on the road, Harls,” she snapped out before crossing arms over chest and huffing indignantly as she pouted at the window.

While occupied with her moping, Raven reached again for the dial, a sinking feeling settling in her stomach as she heard all-too-familiar opening chords and lines. She debated taking her seatbelt off completely in order to reach the dial, until she heard the clown let out a delighted squeal, beating her to the volume knob.

“Oh, I love this song!” she laughed before turning slightly back to address Raven, “Y’know, last time yer mom an’ I teamed up, this was her ringtone! Ain’t that nutty?”

“It is,” Raven grumbled, “Can we change the station, please?”

The botanist seemed to perk up in the front seat, sending Raven a knowing smirk as she reached for the volume herself, dialing it up impossibly louder.

“After this song, darling. I just adore it, too.”

lae’s unofficial list of favourite figure skating costumes and why

What a great question - there’s so much I want to say about costumes, believe me, and I will probably reserve some of this for a future episode of In The Loop because of that, but here are some of the costumes that come to mind for me. There are a lot of costumes that I find gorgeous in themselves but fewer that really match with the criteria you set out.

In no particular order

Seimei 2.0 - Yuzuru Hanyu Designer: Satomi Ito (who actually said Yuzuru was the designer lol)

I mean, duh. I’m so glad this ended up being its final form that truly did justice to the program, the terrifying confidence of gold accents and all. Talk about a costume being created for a program that was also created for Yuzuru and by him. Yuzuru adapted a traditional Japanese character and music for the modern figure skating context and it’s fitting his costume did the same - flattering and unusual, designed to be iconic and singular.

Danse Macabre - Yuna Kim Designer: Unknown (maybe Lie Sang-Bong who designed a lot of Yuna’s dresses in the past)

Listen Queen Yuna had so many amazing looks that it’s genuinely so hard to choose, but this was just. Iconic. Incorporates Yuna’s signature open back, high collar and long sleeved dress which she’d return to so many times, perfectly suited to the vibe of the song that also made her best qualities sing. Evokes a flock of ravens and seductive darkness without being too literal about it. How to make black striking: take notes.

I’d also put her Homage to Korea dress in the same category of being instantly striking and a way to do black costumes.

O - Akiko Suzuki Designer: Unknown but maybe Shizuko Orihara (MU Costume Design) who has designed costumes for Akiko in the past

Truly such a subtle, intricate dress like nothing I’ve seen before and so well executed (look at that colour selection of the beading!!!!! arhghhg I love). A little literal given the nature of the program (bird themed) and why do Japanese ladies insist on matching their eye makeup to their dress ; _ ; but truly so striking - I’ve never seen anything like it or since.

Loco - Shoma Uno Designer: Satomi Ito

This is a prime example of costuming accentuating the skater’s best physical qualities - eye-catching, sophisticated design, the high collar that directs the eye and draws attention to Shoma’s features. The balance of red elements dotted in the jacket making it feel cohesive, and suited to the nature of the music. The gradient of the top and cropped jacket creates an illusion of proportions that gives him longer legs.

Again, usually I wouldn’t go with such literal costumes but this is a masterpiece - the subtlety of the bead and crystal work, the feather motif, the plunging back... the perfect costume for this program in that I can’t imagine another.

Send in the Clowns - Yuna Kim Designer: Ahn Gyu-mi

Okay this merits a special mention because I’m still not sure if I agree with the shade of yellow (I think a golden more mustard yellow would have been killer) but this is one colour only Yuna could have pulled off given the light undertone of her skin, the orange notes in her blush and lipstick and warm brown in her hair that stopped it from looking sallow. Send in the Clowns is one of my favourite Yuna programs and this was just such a bolt of unexpected colour especially against the Sochi blue that it was unforgettable.

Sous le ciel de Paris - Kaetlyn Osmond

Perhaps an odd choice - it’s not the sort of costume that would normally catch my eye but somehow this is an example of a costume matching a skater and music becoming something more when working in conjunction with the two. It captures Kaetlyn’s athletic vibe in its cut while still evoking French sophistication with the colour, the neck-scarf and a bit of sparkle.

Also in this category of ‘costume matching skater and music and becoming more than a sum of its parts but mostly because I love a particular detail’:

On Golden Pond - Karen Chen Designer: Jan Longmire (x)

I’m a sucker for the asymmetrical sleeve detail here only because this is one program that really calls for it.

Miss Saigon - Satoko Miyahara (also her Planets costume because the hair detail and the baaack again). Designer: Unknown

I don’t love the shade of red (not so sophisticated) but the open back and the detail in her bun....I think it really accentuated Satoko’s best features, her delicacy and subtle sophistication even at such a young age. I bought her as a young Kim.

“Oh my-” Eddie fainted right into your arms. “There’s two now?” Beverly asked. You shook your head, “don’t worry, Mike’s nothing like Richie. He’s more... quiet.” “That's not saying much.” Stan mumbled and you hit his arm as Eddie stood back up and took a pump from his inhaler. “Guys, This is the losers club. losers club, this is…” You named every person from both groups, everyone seemed to be sizing each other up to find their equals on the other side. “W-who are they?” Bill asked, “Well they’re sure as hell not from Derry.” Eddies squeaked.

“We’re from Hawkins, Indiana. We got here through the upside down” Mike said in the most Duh tone you had ever heard. “The upside what?” Richie asked. Mike sighed and started to tell the story of the Upside down, or least what they knew about the monsters that inhabited it. After he was done it was your turn to playback the last few days and all the craziness that happened during them.

They all listened to you intently, hanging onto to every word that left your mouth. As you spoke you took turns looking at all of them, trying to identify what they were thinking. Mike H. and Stan had blank features but you thought if you looked into their eyes any longer the fear that filled them would reach out and grab you too.

Beverly looked strong and steady and so did El, you weren’t surprised. Ben, Lucas, Dustin and Steve looked ready to piss themselves. Bill, Mike, Max and Will you couldn't read, But when you got to Richie, You had never seen him like this. He looked frustrated beyond his years. He looked almost grown up. Richie Tozier grown up.

“Well, sh-shit.” Bill broke the silence after you finished. You nodded, “I think It’s from the Upside down, and I think together we can kill it.” Everyone looked at each other before Bill put his hand in the middle of the groups, “I’m in.” He locked eyes with you, you could see Georgie somewhere hidden deep within him. You put your hand in next, then Richie, Mike, Mike H., Max, Will, Beverly, Ben, Lucas, Eddie, Steve, Dustin and then all that was left was, El and Stan. El stepped forward and put her hand in. everyone looked to Stan, He was crying. “I- I can’t.” You would never had admitted this then but the look you gave him was one of pure pity.

“Stanley, Please. We need you.” He shook his head lightly and placed his hand on yours. It was a serial moment, everyone coming together as one. “Promise.” You could hear El mumbled, you saw Mike look over to her. You felt connected with everyone in that circle. It felt like minutes before anyone said anything.

You didn’t know if you were the only one to felt it but as you looked around finding the eyes of your friends you could feel the heavy weight pushing down on your heart. You could feel that not everyone would make it. You could feel the loss that was coming and yet you knew there was no way out of it.

Bill was the first one to speak up, “wha-what now?” You cracked a smile and looked to Richie who was wearing the same one, “Well, since this could be our last night alive...” “why not party.” Richie finished for you, laughing along.

Bill went home and grabbed his boom box and some of the cassettes all of you shared. Stan and Eddie got all of the pillows, blankets and sleeping bags they could find. Bev and Richie took as much food and smokes they could get from the drugstore and Ben went to get everyone some soda.

It was getting chilly and the sun had completely set by the time everyone was back. You, Mike and Steve set up a bonfire with odd sticks from the forest floor as the rest set up camp for the night. There were logs and rocks set in a messy circle around the blazing fire and someone, you assumed Will and Mike, layed out sleeping bags and filled them with the blankets and pillows taking up the entire clearing.

When Richie and Bev pulled out the cigarettes Steve at first went into mother mode and tried to snatch them but after listening to Riches trashmouth complaining for all of 5 minutes he gave them back. You took one, so did Bill, Mike H, and Max. You stuck yours in your pocket for later.

The party wasn't really much of a party. It was more of a reunion for something that hadn't even happened yet. First some of you guys danced. At first it was just the losers and then slowly Mike, Lucas and Max joined it. When Richie and you danced together it was really something.

The year before, your favorite movie came out, Dirty Dancing. You had dragged Eddie, Stan and Richie to it countless times and at the school dance Richie surprised you by having the dances completely memorized and ready to perform.

As soon as the songs came on you knew you couldn’t help but do it. The losers all knew exactly what you were doing but the others sure as hell didn’t. They were a bit confused why you were dancing and that and then laughing. Dancing dirty with Richie was one of your favorite things to do. He could translate his trashmouth to his hips pretty damn good.

When everyone had settled down people drank, smoked and snacked, laughing and sharing stories to the music playing softly in the background. You felt an odd sense of safety then, everything was so peaceful and calm.

But as the night drew on your thoughts fogged over and your smile fell into a frown. Both Ben and Bill had not left Beverly's side. Richie, Stan and Eddie couldn’t stop fucking staring at her, Max and El, never once giving you a second glance. Jealousy was running through you. You liked the feeling of Richies warm body on yours when you dancing, you liked the feeling of Stan not being able to look away from you or the feeling of Mike's gentle hand on your shoulder.

Richie who had been sitting next to you had completely turned to be facing the rest of the girls and shamelessly flirted with them, Lucas had his arm draped around Max for most of the night. “Would you look at all these babes.” Richie whispered to Eddie just loud enough for you to hear. You scoffed and got up from your seat wandering into the woods just a few feet.

You looked towards the drop to the water and found Beverly and Bill sitting hand in hand on the edge. They were hidden from the others by a thick rock. You watched as they both pulled closer and closer together until their lips connected. Why? Why wasn’t that you? Why wasn't someone kissing you? Why was Richie kissing you? Or Mike? Or Stan?

You went back to the others, said you were going to sleep and laid down on a sleeping bag. A few joined you but mostly they stayed up. You saw Bill, Ben and even Richie all trying to fight over Bev before you rolled to be on your side facing the other way. You couldn't sleep. After you were sure no one else was still awake you sat up against the a tree and played with the dirt around you, drawing small patterns and lines.

You saw how happy Lucas and Max were. You wanted that. You didn't honestly know if you were going to make it through the next few days. But you wanted to feel that before you left this world.

“(y/n)?” You jumped and looked up to see Mike walking over to you rubbing his eyes, “why are you still up?” you shrugged, “couldn't sleep, what about you?” He shrugged mimicking you and slid down the tree next to you. “El.” You frowned and looked to him out the corner of your eye, “why El?” Mike didn't answer at first, instead looking straight ahead, you thought he wasn't going to answer you but he did, very quietly, “She doesn’t love me anymore and I don't think I love her.” “Oh.” He let out a pathic laugh.

“Yeah… Oh. When I first met her I was obsessed, I kissed her and then like 10 minutes later she disappeared, for a long time and when she came back at first I thought it’d all go back. But when she started going out in the world and meeting new people she realized I wasn't the only option. She said she wanted to try new things.” “Ouch.” “Yeah. I thought I would just wait for her to come around but it had been awhile again and I started to think maybe it is a good idea to look around before settling down and then she told me just what I thought I wanted to hear, that she wanted me or whatever, and I said no. Because I realized I didn't love her nearly as much as I thought I did.”

“Fuck dude.” He nodded, “are you gonna tell me the real reason you're awake now?” You scoffed, “it's dumb.” “I’m sure it's not.” “Oh, trust me.” Mike moved so you could see him roll his eyes. “Okay. fine, whatever.” You turned out to be facing him and put your hands in your lap. “I just want to be a thought of as a real girl.” “A what? What does that even mean.” It was your turn to roll your eyes, “Like Beverly or Max or El, all the boys fawn over them and I’m just here. And I hate it. I could leave this earth tomorrow and never know how it feels to be loved by someone. I didn’t even have a first kiss!” You put your head in your hands.

“God. What if I die before… any of that.” Mike placed his hand gently on your knee. “Your not going to die. And besides, kissing is overrated.” You glared at him. “Symbolism jackass.” “Oh. Well, why don’t we go and try to sleep? We can keep each other company or something.” You nodded, “Sure.” He stood and up took your hand, pulling you off the ground. Neither of you let the other go as you walked back to the mass of sleeping bags.

When you laid on your side you felt him lay right behind you. Only a few minutes later did you feel him getting closer to your back as he reached out a arm softly wrapping it around your waist. You didn’t know if it was the cold or loneliness but something inside of you stirred, you snuggled yourself into his chest and he jumped a little. “I th-thought you were asleep.” You shook your head. “Nope. not yet.”

The List

A list of songs to maybe avoid in the audition room.

Pre-List note: This list goes out the window if they tell you singing from the show is ok or if they specifically tell you to sing from the show. Remember, this list is generally speaking. Also, for some of these songs I’m going to offer some alternative suggestions – songs that sound similar or have a similar arc or character, but maybe aren’t done so often (that I know of).

Also, this list is a lot less important when it comes to community theatre, generally speaking, though it does depend on the director. Still, don’t sing “On My Own”.

Additionally, songs from shows that have been on Broadway in the past 5 years tend to be a bit too new to use for auditions, so they should probably be avoided.

There’s exceptions to every rule, but please if something is marked with a ~ REALLY think about whether you want to sing it.

~Adelaide’s Lament from Guys and Dolls

This song within the show is adorable and hilarious. In an audition setting it’s just not great to sing in an accent with an affectation (the typical New York accent that Adelaide is played with on top of her having a stuffed nose from the cold). Unless you’re able to pair it with another song that shows off your real voice, it’s best to leave this one for cabarets and karaoke.

“Waiting in the Wings” from Ain’t Broadway Grand

~Astonishing from Little Women

I love, love, love this song…but not for auditions. It’s a great ‘I want’ song with a killer money note at the end if you have that Eb5. However, unless you can do it better than Sutton Foster, leave it at home. Those behind the table will probably have heard it butchered at auditions a lot and just end up comparing you to the OBC in their minds (not intentionally, it just happens) or tuning out.

“Woman” from The Pirate Queen

“Sweet Liberty” from Jane Eyre

Being Alive from Company

Sondheim at an audition is always a gamble. Additionally, the stakes for this song can be VERY difficult to build up in 16-32 bars. My gentledudes and gentledude identifying people, maybe skip this one.

Bring Him Home from Les Miserables

Unless you are going to sing the hell out of that Bb, don’t. Just don’t. It’s what we’re all waiting for. If you screw it up, you look bad. If you don’t sing it, you look bad. So my dear tenors, please have that note and have it perfectly.

~Defying Gravity from Wicked

If your name is not Idina Menzel, they don’t want to hear this. It has been so over done over the last 15+ years that the team behind the table may just tune out entirely. Also, if you can’t guarantee belting that F5 every time, you can’t do it under the stress of an audition, so don’t risk it. Yes, you can belt safely but you’re more likely to slip up with your technique if you’re nervous and hurt yourself.

“Carrie” from Carrie the Musical

~Don’t Rain on my Parade from Funny Girl

This song belongs to Barbra Streisand. It’s another one that you’ll just end up being compared to the original and that doesn’t bode well

Franklin Shepherd Inc. from Merrily We Roll Along

If you have ever looked at the sheet music for this thing you know exactly why it’s on this list. Trust me, I did this show in college. It is cruel and unusual punishment for your accompanist if you don’t know for 100% sure that they can play it (And typically that’s only because they’ve either played the show or already learned the song in advance). (Listen to it though. I love this show so much and it needs more love).

(Also I don’t really hear this one a lot, but it’s on the list as a precaution)

Forget About the Boy from Thoroughly Modern Millie

Millie in general just gets done a lot, best not to.

~Gimme Gimme from Thoroughly Modern Millie

See above and mix it with the Astonishing explanation and the fact that so many girls sing this in auditions. Heck, I used to use it a lot as my go-to for belting auditions. But it just tends to be severely over done (hence why it’s here with the ~ beside it)

It’s hard to play the joke of the song in only 16-32 bars, so it really doesn’t work for auditions.

Glitter and Be Gay from Candide

I’ve seen this one on a few lists. I personally haven’t heard it done a TON at auditions, but if you want to show off your more classical sound and some high notes without being all the way in the stratosphere…

Good Morning Baltimore from Hairspray

Eh, a fun song but Hairspray in general just tends to be done a lot.

~I Can Hear the Bells from Hairspray

The same reason as above with the added caveat that your body type becomes relevant due to the lyrics. If you don’t fit the body type for Tracy it just seems silly, like singing the title song from Legally Blonde if you have dark hair. Also this one is pretty damn repetitive.

I Dreamed a Dream from Les Mis

Between the movie in 2012 and Susan Boyle this has come back into some high popularity. Yes, it’s a lovely, moving song. This has a lot of the “Ballad face” thing that can happen (See below for where that term comes in) but you know the face, the “I’m acting like I’m sad right now but not actually feeling the emotion” face

“When I Look at You” from The Scarlet Pimpernel (Just a heads up, I suggest this one a lot in this list.)

If I Loved You from Carousel

As an article I read about overdone songs put it “Ballad face alert.” This one is hard to pull off without giving that face. If you are going to do this song focus more on the acting of it. Really think about what Julie is saying to Billy and why. Give it some background and depth not just “this is a pretty song, I’m a soprano (or baritone) and it’s a ballad”

Journey to the Past from Anastasia

Ooooh, this used to be a go-to of mine, but with the show being on Broadway now it’s best to avoid it. It’s still a nice song though. Maybe in a few years when the show has left Broadway it’ll be safer to use again.

~Let it Go from Frozen

This was on this list back when it first came out with how popular the movie was (and still is). Also belting that E and the end has a little bit to do with it being on the list. Also chances are if the people you’re auditioning for have young children, they already hate this song a lot from over exposure.

This is one of those where you’ll be compared to the original. Liza is forever connected to this song in a lot of people’s minds and you don’t want to deal with that comparison.

Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera

Why? Just why would you sing this song at an audition? It doesn’t have particularly high stakes, it’s hard to sing, and is VERY specific to its show. Also it’s really plodding after a while (duhduhduhduhduhduhduh ^duh).

No Good Deed from Wicked

The stakes are high, the song is great, but Wicked may elicit some groans from the table. If you are absolutely bent on singing from Wicked this or “I’m Not That Girl” are your best bets.

Maybe look at:

“Painting Her Portrait” from Jane Eyre (The belt’s not quite as high, but it’s got the same intensity”

Not for the Life of Me from Thoroughly Modern Millie

Again with the TMM… I heard this twice in about 20 minutes at a recent audition.

~On My Own from Les Mis

If you are considering this you are either just getting into musical theatre or very ballsy. This is the archetypical audition song for women. It’s one of the most overdone audition songs. You may even hear a groan or two if you say you’re gonna sing it. Do yourself a favor and leave it for your shower.

“Wait a Bit” from Just So

“I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar (Might be a little overdone)

“As Long as He Needs Me” from Oliver (see above note, though I think it’s a bit more classic than overdone)

Out Tonight from Rent

This song is very tied to dancing and a lot of high energy movement. That’s hard to do a) in an audition setting and b) if you’re not a choreographer. Not to mention the register switch on the melisma of “Out” is a bitch to get right even when you’re not nervous.

“The World According to Chris” from Carrie the Musical

~Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz

Judy Garland sang it first and sang it best (at least in a lot of people’s opinions). The octave jumps in this are ridiculous tbqh, and if you’re nervous you may not quite make them.

Pity the Child from Chess

We call it “Pity the Singer” for a reason. It’s a difficult song. It’s super range-y. Just don’t. (Plus you’ll be compared to Adam Pascal)

Say it with me: Wicked is not good for auditions because it is one of the most popular musicals of the past century.

Run Away With Me from The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown

If you really want to pay 10$ for sheet music, sure. Still, between Aaron Tveit, Jeremy Jordan, Michael Arden, and just about every other Broadway heart throb singing this, it may be a comparison you want to avoid.

Screw Loose from Cry Baby

I’ve seen this on a couple other lists and I know a lot of people who love this song (and love this show). It’s cute. I see why they like it, but the joke of the song is a bit hard to play in 16-32 bars. If you’re in an audition situation where they’re letting you sing the whole song and this one fits the show and the character you want, go for it. If not, I’d say look for something else.

Seasons of Love from Rent

This is the song everyone knows from Rent. Also it’s a group number it’s not gonna sound as good without at least 3 other people to sing the harmonies.

Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music

Aside from being one of the most well-known Sondheim songs, it’s just sung a lot. Also, a note to you teenage singer/actors who want to sing this at auditions: Don’t. As my old voice teacher often says “You’re not used up enough for Sondheim”

Show Off from Drowsy Chaperone

The whole tap number in the middle, the Sutton Foster association, and the “toot your own horn” factor should keep you from doing this song. It’s like when people sing “I’m the Greatest Star” from Funny Girl, you had better damn well be the greatest star or it’ll just make you look bad to the casting team.

Someone Like You from Jekyll & Hyde

FOOOOORRRRR IFFF SOMEONE sings this song again while I’m in the room I’m gonna scream. Yes, it’s a pretty song. Yes, Lucy tugs at our heart strings as a character. Yes, people sing this all the time. Hell, I’ve sung it in my voice lessons. It’s range-y though and Wildhorn can be kinda weird for auditions (also in my opinion this is not one of his better shows anyway).

“When I Look at You” from The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Somewhere That’s Green from Little Shop of Horrors

Personally, I haven’t really encountered this one so frequently in auditions, but a friend of mine had actually complained to me once about how it’s all he hears from women at auditions. It’s a beautiful song, but between its popularity and the urge to sing in the accent/affectation that Audrey is usually played with I would leave it at home.

Springtime for Hitler from The Producers

WHO IN THE 9 CIRCLES OF HELL SINGS THIS FOR AN AUDITION?!

(Again, haven’t really heard this, but it is funny to think of anyone with the balls to sing this in an audition NOT for The Producers)

Stars from Les Mis

Beautiful song. The problem here is you REALLY have to raise the stakes for this to work in an audition.

Stranger to the Rain from Children of Eden

Another great song. However I hear this one done a lot at auditions…even once at a Hairspray audition of all things. It seems to be dying down a little in popularity though, so you may be safe with it depending on where you live/are auditioning.

Taylor the Latte Boy

Another Kristin Chenoweth, not from a show, needs the full song for the joke to really land.

The Wizard and I from Wicked

We’ve gone over Wicked 500000times now (lies. It’s like 5, but still).

“The Spark of Creation” from Children of Eden

Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera

The cadenza at the end is tricky as hell also this has no actual purpose in the show other than “oooh see how great Christine is” and to have Raoul recognize her. There’s not a lot of context you can add to it.

Maybe look at:

“The Finer Things” from Jane Eyre (Fun fact, Elizabeth DeGrazia who played Blanche back in the OBC was also Christine in Phantom at one point in Toronto. She’s Canadian)

This song is great until you’re about 12-14. Once you’re too old to play Annie, you’re too old for this song.

Watch What Happens from Newsies

The patter is tricky, and it’s sung a LOT. (It does have a nice 32 bar cut there though, but even so don’t bother with it unless you want to be girl #387 that they hear sing it)

Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom of the Opera

Phantom is kind of like Wicked in that you just shouldn’t sing from it for the most part. This song also seems like it could become over indulgent with the “I am sad now” and less genuine if one takes it just as a cut for an audition.

Your Daddy’s Son from Ragtime

This is apparently overdone in some places. It’s a beautiful song but it is also one specifically attached to a character of Color. If you’re not of her race (Sarah is Black), maybe just don’t sing it for an audition.

A note on composers that you “shouldn’t sing”: Yes, there are some who are notoriously difficult to sight read (see: Sondheim, Stephen and Brown, Jason Robert). But you’ll generally be able to find a few by these that aren’t too tricky (or you’ll find a key that makes them a bit easier to sight read). One thing I’ve come across (just in my experience mind you) is that the accompanists at professional auditions tend to be excellent. They can play just about anything you throw in front of them. At community theatre auditions you may be a little less lucky (Again, in general. I love community theatre and think pretty highly of it) but then again you may have a great accompanist there too. A general rule is if you’re worried about the difficulty of your song for the accompanist either don’t choose that one or bring a backup in case you hear that the accompanist isn’t all that great.
