The way Dean talks to the kid Michael in Something Wicked destroys me.
He tells him EXACTLY what the plan is and what his part is. He answers all his questions. He's totally honest with him. He prepares him for the loud gunshots, he reassures him, he asks if he's sure. He tells him what to do to stay safe once the fight starts. He knows this is a terrible thing to ask of a child. But he gives Michael everything he can to make it less so.
He gives him everything John NEVER gave him.

SUPERNATURAL REWATCH, 1x18: "Something Wicked"
-I have decided that the recap for this first season is my enemy and I want to fight it.
-Oh man, I forgot how creepy the beginning of this episode is.
-I hate that Dean was right that the nurse wouldn't check the ID too closely. Ma'am, don't just let strange men walk around the hospital without checking their ID to make sure they are who they say they are.
-How did the dad not notice the handprint on the windowsill?
-Seeing the flashback of John leaving Dean in charge of watching Sam, just makes it more heartbreaking seeing how fast Dean had to grow up. Neither of them got to have a childhood, especially Dean.
-God these flashbacks hurt my heart. :(
-I know the old lady isn't the shtriga, is it the doctor?
-I like how the shadows of the branches on the trees look like the shtriga's fingers.
-I get why Dean wants to use Michael as bait, but I'm with Sam. I don't like the thought of him being dangled in front of this thing.
-Finally, these two communicate!!
-John that's too much pressure on a kid!! This perfectly explains why Dean is so careful and concerned about Sam.
-Also, the fact that John looked at Dean differently after that and that's one of the reasons why Dean never questions John's orders.
-Michael's really brave to be doing this.
-God damn it, Dean, let Sam express his gratitude!
-Damn, the effect on Sam as the shtriga was stealing its life force was crazy.
-Dean: "Okay, little brother?"
-I get what Sam means. The fact that his innocence is gone at such a young age is really sad.
-Dean: "If it means anything, sometimes I wish you could, too."

Critical theory: The parentified child, responsibility, and guilt. Lost/stolen innocence.
Discussion question(s): At this point, how does Dean feel about his presumed role/duty, in relation to both Sam/the family and with the wider world? Did John use his children as bait? And furthermore, is Dean blaming himself for a ‘failure’ that was in fact an essential part of his father’s plan? Symbolism of 1) the lucky charms and 2) thundercats vs. war movies. Is this Dean’s secret from Bloody Mary?
