Useless Headcanon of the Day:

Alys is yeu-li. Which are a rare, mostly female, race of fox-shifters with a reputation of either being these ethereal beauties perfect for wife-ing up or dangerous seductresses that drive men insane (And in some stories, eat their organs. Mostly hearts.). Sometimes a mix of both but nothing in between. This is due to a natural mood effect they have that can influence how people feel about them. Typically, making people like them more. But this ability, when they haven't learned to actively control, is affected by the yeu-li's mood. Positive mood yields positive effects, negative moods yields negative effects. It's very ... "You'd be prettier if you smiled more" .... And Alys is almost never in a good mood. So she usually has no effect or people generally dislike her more (treat her worse). Depending on how pissed off she is. Though being around dogs or kids generally put her in a good mood. Some people seem to be immune to these effects (like Bastien and Zandros). Some gain resistance over time and getting to know her (like Adon). And then there's Cardan who seems into it...??? I don't know what his deal is.
