Ive decided trying to draw foreshortening in realism is hell actually
#GRRRRRRRR#BAKR BAKR BARK BARK#BARK BARK BARK BARK#im ok now#i havent done realism in so long so its tricky. i like semi realism and cartoony best but i feel its always good to go back and try realism#to get like. your practice in on anatomy and how things look realistically and then apply it to semi realism or cartoony by exaterating#so its still looks like. anatomically correct in the style its in#which is a big deal to me for my art i like it to flow well as a whole#i like gesture drawings bc of that cuz most of them have the whole body#mostly in motion and you can see how the muscles in the arms and legs stretch with the torso bc the whole thing about gesture drawings is#theyre usually quite exatterated (idk how to spell exatturated sorry :( ) so its usually stretching a whole multitude of different muscles#throughout wherever the motion is coming from and going through: arching your back down to the ground is going to be using some muscles#in both your legs and arms#am i making sense#your bodily anatomy is like a puppet and once you put the pieces together in your head on how to draw them you need to string them together#in harmonic motion#i miht bw making no sense but whatever#my silly ass that hardly does gesture drawings with a reference which i Should. doing a whole ass rant on acurate anatomy smh#but i understand it#somewhat#keep in mind everything im saying here is just for me about my art and about what i want in my art. dont think im sounding nitpicky of how#art should be#im just rnating abt my approach to it#ANWAY ill shut up now#i think i went down several different rabbits trails here

Your art is such a huge inspiration for me , i was wondering if you had any tips on anatomy ? Your way of doing it is so fluid and fun to look at and i struggle a lot with stiffness .
welp, long post incoming, sorry i really didn't want to write all of this on the canvas, so most of it will be in text + pictures
(also please keep in mind that this is not a 100% correct way to do this, but this is how i do it)
first, a little secret you need to know. none of my drawings are actually anatomically correct-- its more about proportions and lines of motion than it is about anatomy (since you said you struggle with stiffnes). now, of course anatomy is important, especially if you're going for something more realistic, but i'd say its not the first thing you should focus on. for me, anatomy is something i learn slowly and gradually as i go and as i need (and forget soon after).
i think proportions are in a way a lot more helpful than anatomy, because you can easily change them according to the character's needs and it'll still look believable. so like.
arms from wrist to elbow and from elbow to shoulder are roughly the same size, same with legs.
character's open palm is the same size as their face from chin to hairline.
the thickness of the neck depends not on the size of the head but the size of shoulders. so, if the shoulders are broad and muscular the neck will be too. if the shoulders are small then the neck will be thinner, etc.
when hands are pressed to the body, elbows are in line with the waist and the palm is roughly below the hips.
length of legs in relation to the body is directly responsible for how tall the character looks. if they're the same size - character looks average, if the legs are shorter than the body the character looks shorter, and if the legs are longer then the character looks taller.
and then for the face.... i literally forgot everything about face proportions uhhhh. well. the ears sit in the middle of the head and are in the same dimensions as the nose. the spaces from hairline to eyebrows to tip of the nose to chin are all the same size. mouth sits on 2/3 between the nose and the chin, leaving more space for the chin. eyes are the same size and the space between them is equal to the size of one eye. (this is much easier to explain in a drawing)
and then to make your character stand out and look unique you change some of the proportions. make their eyes bigger, ears smaller, arms longer or legs shorter. the difference between knowing the proportions and breaking them on purpose vs not following the proportions at all, is that when you know what you're breaking it looks intentional and it has a meaning and it makes sense to the viewer, instead of you breaking all the rules without knowing what they are. just remember to emphasize it enough for your style, because if you overdo or don't do enough it might look out of place. again, its all about balance.
Tumblr media
and now for the lines of motion... i dont exactly know how to explain them, because there's not really a correct way to do them? but basically its a line that follows and sets the motion. yeah. its what makes the characters look less stiff. and its not exactly imaginary lines, but they're not simply visible either. its the lines that the silhouette of the character follows, the direction their limbs or elements of clothing create. you're basically creating those patterns that the pose follows, and you know us humans we sure love our patterns, so the brain subconsciously recognizes that there's a pattern and the image then feels more structured, more real in a sense?
i have no damn idea how to put it into words, but. um. diagonal lines are dynamic, straight lines (in relation to the canvas) are stiff. its like a square looks stiff but a rombos looks flowy even if they're basically the same thing. so to make your characters look more dynamic you need to build the pose on diagonals and not straight lines. and if you want the pose to look stable then you need to balance it out with lines of motion that go in an opposite direction. sort of like you put two rocks on the ends of a plank to balance it out instead of putting no rocks at all because the plank will balance on its own. it creates flavor and weight and intention, sort of like "this plank balances because of the rocks" instead of "the plank balances because there's nothing". sorry i get carried away with the metaphors--
you can use the stiff/dynamic thing however you want for whatever purpose you need. for example making the bottom of the character who is standing still be parallel to the canvas, but keeping their body diagonal and dynamic, helps to make the character feel stable and set in the drawing, like they're standing on firm ground. keeping a background or some element of the drawing stiff but making the character dynamic emphasizes the movement and focuses attention on the character. but making both the background and the character dynamic creates a fully dynamic composition and the feeling like everything is in motion. its an interesting balance but the more you draw the more you understand it.
Tumblr media
hope this helps :D

Art of Mage: The Ascension
Tumblr media
Recently, a big event happened: I started playing MtA again, and I was forced to read. To be honest, I still find it difficult to read long and complex texts in English, but it's great practice. It's not the first time I've opened the rule book, but now I somehow paid special attention to the arts. And they are very cool there! This is the book I want to talk about. And this is an old book, after which, I think, a lot has changed in the world of illustration. But I'm just curious how it was. Was this book successful? What do you think about it?
Many people worked on this edition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first, I wanted to find the specific author of each picture, but despite the existence of such a list, it turned out to be a difficult task. So today I will only comment on the art, not the artists. I am not a professional because my art has never been used for such books, but I want to share my impressions and thoughts.
Tumblr media
There were a lot of such cards there and they are also quite cool, and the main thing is that they look in their place and really look like real tarot cards in design and vibe. Although this is not the art that interests me the most, I couldn't help but mention them here.
Tumblr media
Really cool. It seems to be something from traditional materials, similar to watercolor, maybe with the addition of something else. If you look closely, you can see the remains of a pencil. Look at the head. Is everything drawn anatomically correct? No. But does it create the right mood? Yes!
Tumblr media
Art by Mark Jackson if I'm not mistaken. Kinda reminds me of Sandman from the comics, don't you think? I wonder if this kind of black and white line art is still used in modern books? Must check.
Tumblr media
This art... I was a little surprised to see it in the book. I worked in the game industry and was used to the fact that everything should be casually polished (thanks to gamejams for allowing me to deviate from this rule). Right here... a dynamic plot, but work with the clarity of the picture, color, volume, lighting... on some details it is simply not there. It seems that at some point it was not the main thing to be an illustrator. I wonder what was important? And what remains? Because I would really like to be involved in something like this book.
Tumblr media
I would be happy to see how it is done. I have thoughts that maybe photos were used, but most were definitely drawn and I just want to know how
Tumblr media
It has its own style. A lot of work on small details requires patience, not everyone can draw so many small details and not get lost in them. I love when people do not lose the courage to draw in a unique style
Tumblr media
as in the previous picture, traditional materials seem to have been used here: pencils, felt-tip pens, maybe watercolors? What do you think of when you see this? I think "small artists". So many talented artists with small audiences on Twitter or Tumblr can do the same. Although not. Not "the same", because no one will do "the same" in creativity. At the same level - yes. The same - no. It's obvious that a lot of the artist's personality and experience has been put into this, and that makes this picture unique
Tumblr media
oh i love it, it's not even a color drawing, but it looks so good on the page! But I don't really understand what bothers me about this girl's breasts, I wish I could see what it looks like from the front
Tumblr media
We have already seen this author. Look at the hair. I.. really don't know what to say. Not exactly what I expected.
Tumblr media
interesting art, interesting creature. Many would call it a sketch, but I think it is precisely here that more work on the details is not needed
Tumblr media
I don't know the author, but I definitely recognize the style - I saw something like that in the changelings rulebook
Tumblr media
Oh, I like it. It takes a special skill to draw like that, and I don't have it. Very dynamic. And the form shown is interesting
Tumblr media
Soap. Nothing extra, nice details on the background, clear silhouette. Good.
Tumblr media
I love this kind of comic book style. It is exactly as it should be in this style, I don't know what else to say, except that there is a good work with textures
Tumblr media
how interestingly and harmoniously different styles are combined in this book
Tumblr media
I like it, I would read something like comic book in that style, very nice to look at
Tumblr media
I can't say about the plot, but the details, volume, and shadows are very well drawn. I wonder if it was done in pencil? I am fascinated by people who can draw with pencils and have a similar result
Tumblr media
very calm great vibe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is already something closer to the game art I know, not casual, but a step towards polishing, + looks like digital
Tumblr media
one more step :) If you don't pay attention to the face, something like this can now be drawn in hidden objects games. Very nice drawing, by the way, I like the dynamics.
I think that will be enough, at least for today. I don't know who would be interested in such a review with personal opinions. But here's what fascinated me and made me think: so many artists with such different styles in one book. Unbelievable. It would be very interesting to be a part of something like that. Now I want to review new books from this point of view. I used to look at them as a reader, but now...
I wonder if there will be new books of this kind? What are the requirements? What is needed?
Only one trend worries me. Some time ago I had a conversation with the author of this book It was an interesting but a little sad conversation. The author says that, at best, he will receive not so much for this book. He says that he cannot pay the artists as well, because then he will have nothing left. It's a shame, but the only solution he found was to use the AI. I wanted to read the text of the book, because Umbra is a very interesting topic. I even had the opportunity to read it for free as a free copy provided by the author. I did not read it. One of the comments says that the art there is well-suited, although it was created by AI. I do not know. I don't want to see it even for free. I think it brings Banality into the world, destroys the dreams of small artists to be part of something great. I can understand a small author of a small book that won't make much money. It's just sad. I can only hope that the trend does not spread to the whole world. It will really be the time of Winter. And no more magic in this technocratic world.

its late in every timezone but my own but w/e finally i have The Energy to write my annual quads day gift post
Nancor gave Gliese a bouquet of dried roses, as well as a dark chocolate bunny. he says that the latter isn't an early Easter gift, but boy do the Easter eggs seem to arrive in stores earlier every sweep!
Dismas gave Maidel half a dozen cupcakes, three of which are vanilla-flavoured and decorated to look like sheep, and the other three are black liquorice-flavoured and decorated to look like goats
Callan bought Gerrel a cheap fondue kit as well as some fruits and a lot of snacks perfect for dipping into the chocolate. as with any of his gifts, it's clear he just wants to eat fun foods with his moirail or have Gerrel do all the work for him. He's not expecting anything from Izuili, but if Izu surprises him he's got a back-up Chocolate Bar From His Pocket as a return gift. don't ask how long that's been in there
Ashe gave Cheran a box of chocolates shaped like anatomically-correct hearts, which he bought from Viltau so they're. um. let's just say Cheran will have no issue eating them without feeling ill afterwards. And he gave Jikiro a box of various chocolate liqueurs, making sure that at least one of the flavours is plum wine
Velour made Jamie a beanie with a subtle diamond pattern, and also gave him first pickings of any chocolate / quadrants day themed gift that was sent to him by his fans. he certainly isn't going to be able to eat all that chocolate on his own
Mikiel is still Going Through Shit rn so he did not visit Lyvere, but he has set aside a box of fancy chocolate truffles to say thanks for the care packages he's been leaving at Miki's doorstep. He's also got a box for Thrixe when he returns as well
Lucy was unable to give Anirus anything for Quadrants Day due to the situation in Vernrot, but he did enjoy spending time with them regardless and promises to make them a nice meal and also some cookies next time they visit
Sharle did manage to get the evening off work, but he totally forgot about a gift and picked up a box of expensive chocolates on the way to see Jamie. he's still new to this dating thing ok he's Trying
Viltau made Jikiro a box of artisanal chocolates with some unique flavours (like rose tea or macadamia + lemon myrtle), and will challenge Ji to identify every single flavour. If he succeeds, he will receive a prize: A chocolate tanuki statue that is holding a bouquet of chocolate roses, Amaury Guichon-style. For Kitaer, he made chocolates shaped like various body parts... All preserved in formaldehyde to resemble a murder mystery he challenged Kitaer to solving early on in their relationship.
Glasya bought Mikail some incredibly hot/spicy chili chocolates, but also made their own version as well. They want him to tell them which ones he prefers, and if he says the store-brand ones they will pout and pretend to get incredibly offended... But also ask him why so they can improve their craft and really knock his socks off next sweep >:3c

I've been trying to learn how to draw and I love your art style so much I've been practicing by copying it (just in my notebook not like sharing it anywhere) as I love the way you capture characters and emotion but I was wondering how do you go about simplifying a character? I'm not sure if this makes sense but like what do you look for when taking realistic looking characters and translating them into a stylistic version?
Thank you for the ask! keep tracing and copying, its a great way of building the muscle memory and familiarizing yourself with breaking things down into shapes. It means a lot that my art is something that you wanted to use that for! https://twitter.com/meatgirI/status/1606375868959543298?s=20&t=ve-GgU0nMrUBRZnTj0kI3Q I would say that this tweet by meatgiri is a good way of finding different facial features and breaking the face/eyes/nose into shapes, and that its a really good way of getting started. However I also think that learning proportions and anatomy is a really good way of further pushing this skill. im going to explain it a bit, but if it feels overwhelming or makes art something thats not fun, you dont have to use any of it. youll pick up these things through practice and observation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like trace out these lines on my face. they follow these proportions that are applicable to almost all people. once ive got this figured out, i start to fill in the eyes, nose and mouth.
Tumblr media
(some examples of characters... see how this rule still applies even though they look very different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
again see the tutorial i linked above to get a feel for breaking these facial features into shapes. this is what i would suggest to practice different types of faces if you dont have a super good understanding of facial structure
as you observe more in faces, you notice a lot of difference in face shape and structure. but this is a really good way to play with JUST facial features and maintain them consistently
if you want to get into facial structure, then you wanna start looking at the actual anatomy
Tumblr media
try to picture where your face sits on your skull. this can help you decide how MUCH of the bone sticks out from under the face. if you are underweight, older, or have shaper facial features, youre going to see a lot more off things like cheekbones
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so now even though im using the same skull as a base, i can still have a different face shape. because this person might be older, they have a stronger jawline, and their features are sunken in
and the cool thing is that this isnt just applicable from a 3/4th angle. the proportions are always like that!! they might change because of perspective or the angle but honestly at that point youd want to start trying to develop your sense of 3d space
this is just a really simple way of diversifying one single method of drawing faces. notice how i only used the one "base" shape
Tumblr media
and here you can see examples of how their faces sit on the skull. obviously you dont need to be drawing perfectly anatomical skulls every time you draw a person, but it does make good practice to trace those shapes. basically training yourself to get better at observing different features!
you can get into even more varying features when you start to use different skull shapes too. all of these characters have different skull shapes and their features change depending on how they sit on that skull
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here is a good demonstration of anatomically correct differences in skulls of different races. Obviously i tend to think of it as masculine/feminine rather than male/female, but this is a scientific model used for identification (which is based off of sex and not gender)
Tumblr media
age can also play into your skull shape and facial proportions. combining all of this knowledge you can not only have a wide range of different characters, but you can also tell a story.
again the less fat you have on your face, the more sunken in your features are going to be. so you can tell your audience about your character just from this alone
Tumblr media
this is a good example. its a soldier before and after war. you can see how the stress, trauma, living conditions, etc, have all changed how he looks.
obviously this is getting into the real nitty gritty anatomical aspect of it but i do think its a really good way to have your characters feel like they belong to the environment they are in. it also just further illustrates my point earlier, how you can have MANY different types of faces even if you are using the same base for all of them. again if this seems overwhelming, its ok! a lot of this is stuff you pick up via observation as you continue practicing. draw what makes you comfortable, draw what you think is fun, and start off simple. Also know that you really dont need to be going into such detail and drawing the skulls haha. thats really just moreso to demonstrate the fundamental understanding. Good luck with art, keep pushing yourself to learn more and draw what you see!! youll pick up on all these subtle details as you keep at it

10 Anti LO Asks
(Note: All of these asks are before episode 206 (Season 2 finale) so some may be dated.) 1. ok but I love Rachel spent the latter half of 2021 being like ooooh Kronos is coming back!! this is a big deal!! only to timeskip ten years and NOTHING happened. like wow even Kronos isn't a big deal when it comes to how totally not pathetic Persephone is as a 30+ year old doing no work and only being obsessed with a guy she knew for a month. literal masterclass in awful writing. It's almost impressive how bad it is.
2. Deadass I don't even get why RS is like oh yeh nymphs and other creatures should be second class citizens but they're also all "trash" and thus its good and even encouraged to abuse and mistreat them. like yeah that's what was missing, racism where the marginalized group are evil and "deserve" to be abused and mistreated by those with all the power over them. THAT's what mythology was so sorely missing.  jfc. I know a lot of the WT staff are white people and so is Rachel but wtf???
3. It's quite funny how a woman old enough to be my mother cannot draw or write worth shit and there are literal teenagers on this website who are a thousand times the artist and writer she could ever hope to be.
4. This isn’t me trying to be mean but like, why is everything from the book covers to the official merch so ,.. cheap looking? Like these are supposed professionals, not Rachel, doing it, yet they’re still so poorly designed and crafted. It doesn’t help the images Rachel gives time to work with are all in the rushed, ugly style now either 😪
5. I just find it funny that every time an LO fan or even WT promotes it its like ... they ONLY use art from the first 10-ish episodes at best. Like yall, that was over four years ago, why aren't you using current art to be more accurate? Like it's kinda telling on themselves they know the quality declined rapidly after the first few months but are like "just ignore that! look at this three good panels from 2018!"
6. I HATE those panels where RS tries to be anatomically correct to IRL humans and its like omg they look even worse (and are still wildly wrong anyway?? She cannot draw heads to save her life for real). Like lady just work within your stylization, there's a reason people picked up your work off what it used to be versus what it is now.
7. this isnt necessarily LO based but I do find it crazy how people like RS and her fans viewed the original hymn like ugh Demeter is such a bitch why wouldnt she be happy Hades married her daughter like .... you guys are aware ancient brides tended to be married at 14, right? maybe that's why Demeter was pissed and creeped out by him. They're so blinded by their fantasy of this "perfect Hades" that never existed over the truth of a mother defending her literal CHILD.
8. Zeus is objectively the only hot man on cast because he actually has a personality, fashion sense, and pretty hair meanwhile Hades just looks like a dusty old man with zero drip and a million and one red flags 🫣
9. "This style of story telling" what style? just lying and making everything up to where it matches nothing in mythology? my god, she's so concerned over looking like a clever writer who has everything planned out and knows more than anyone else (including actual greeks??? ma'am) over actually telling a decent story. ive never seen someone so self conscious about being perceived as a "real writer" before.
10. Why even use mythology when you won't keep any of the stories true to how they were, change all the relationships, and just make up whatever else instead? At that point just go "this was inspired by the greek myths" and use your own OCs, not claiming you're telling an accurate story with a ton of research put into it. Rachel really just wants to have her cake and eat it too, huh?

For those who don't know, Episode is a free app where you can read thousands and thousands of Choose-Your-Adventure type stories and there is two categories: The ones written by the Episode team themselves, or the ones that are written and submitted by the public. You get 2-4 passes (depending on how you have played the app) that will refill every other hour and everytime you finish one chapter of a story, regardless if it's a story from the team or from public submission, you will get a free gem.
The ones written by the Episode team are pretty good, albeit a little cliche at time, and as all micro-transactional games go, they allow you to use gems to buy the decision you want to get the best outcome from the adventure you choose. You could either pay for it, or you could save the story for later and choose to grind for gems by reading other stories to stock up on the gems.
The ones written by public submission is as it is, public submission. You basically just need to make an account to register into the app and you can automatically write stories to submit them into the app for people to read. Of course, to write the stories you will need to do it on your web browser and they will have tutorials and tips and easy coding guides for you as well as a preview slot to help you fine tune your story better. There are some really good stories posted by the public in there, and about 90% of them don't require gems to get the best outcome, so you will have to depend on your luck whether or not you would get a good or bad ending to your story. But there are some which... ehh... let's just say amateur might be a kinder word for them.
Tumblr media
I joined Episode during its very infancy, when their characters design were as above and their animation is a little janky and limited, but still enough to help tell their story. This format is coined as "Classic" now, and was the very foundation of the app. Back then public submissions were limited as they were testing the waters, and I was one of the few who managed to be in the team part-time and submitted a story as a paid writer. It was one of my best part time jobs yet and I was raking in the dough, that is until I have actually finished my story and my contract was completed, and thus I was renegaded to become a public registered user instead, and now the only way I can earn anything out of my writing is if I hit a certain quota:
Tumblr media
Sadly my daily life has been more hectic and busy, so I hardly wrote any stories nowadays...
Tumblr media
And then we have the Ink platform, which started when the app has gotten more traction and even have some celebrity-featured stories to usher in the new art style (celebrity being Demi Lovato). They have more updated graphics and slightly more defined features, almost like a HD version of the old platform, and with slightly more anatomically-correct features and extra animation. I was a little iffy at first with this platform, being that I've always been used to Classic, but I slowly eased into it and more or less got used to it, especially when they have the additional animation in which I can express my characters better.
Tumblr media
Finally we have the Limelight platform, when the hype got even more on this app and they brought in fandom-based storylines into their feature stories (Pretty Little Liars, Pitch Perfect, Clueless, Mean Girls etc...). Personally I'm not really a fan of this art style. Though it may have even more extra animation and more detailed features to make them look more realistic, it was kinda borderline going into Uncanny Valley territory, and it definitely felt a little off for me. Still, it does serve its purpose for certain types of stories that calls for this type of platform, so I wouldn't complain.
They also brought back an old classic as well called Spotlight, which used to be part of the old OG Episode app platforms, though now they've tweaked it in a way that can be used for both Ink and Limelight style. Not sure if they can be used for Classic style, but we'll see how it goes.
So there you have it, a lowdown (or recap for those in the know) about how Episode works and what I think about it. Hope it helps!

Ditch That Bitch
I tend to become so entangled with whatever project, research, or objective I am obsessing over, I forget to take care of my own needs. At some point, I had neglected myself for so long I forgot what I liked, loved, or even mildly enjoyed. I was stupefied as I tried my best to recall these things. "How did I let this happen? How is this even possible?" It felt as though I had a sort of amnesia.
The creative part of my brain was nearly nonexistent. My niece was so sweet, she is very artistic. She recommended I try to draw or paint, or do anything creative. It was so hard at first. I felt like that part of my mind/ brain was completely dead. So i started drawing images from my dreams, geometric shapes, anatomically correct pictures of organs with labels. She looked at my work, and said, "Um...this is your version of art? Being creative?"
"It is all I could come up with."
She laughed. "Its okay, at least you are trying".
That part of my mind has been damaged or neglected. I am certain of this. It is so much easier for me to think in a scientific/ medical/ chemical or biological manner. I don't even know if I have an imagination any more. I write about things that happen, dreams I have, things I have seen. I draw and paint and sculpt in the same way. I can't just create art in my mind. I can't create stories (not good ones anyway).
It is always interesting to me when I stop writing and pick up where I left off the next day. Sometimes it seems my entire writing style is different. My thought patterns are varied and sometimes I have to delete the entire thing. I sense the variations with this project, but I am not going to ditch it. I am going to embrace it as another sort of writing exercise.
I am still trying to learn my style. I have several different types of writings I like to do, and I guess the simplest answer would be that different writing types warrant different writing styles. Maybe.
This writing exercise I picked up at the end of, "not good ones anyway," and started adding thoughts and words from there. I did notice the inconsistencies in style and tone.
This type of writing is an example of me airing out my grievances with myself...and still trying to fix me. If I can't figure me out, no one else can, right? I am beginning to realize that some parts of me are just that way. Not fixable. I have to be okay with that.
If I could repair one part of me, it would be the part of my brain that is never okay with my accomplishments. The overly critical part that makes me nervous, insecure, and self loathing. It is the voice of an old damaged person who gave too much to others and was left with nothing. Now she is resentful and mistrusting. She is only one of these voices. I would love to drown her out completely or evict her from my life forever. I have good confident voices in here too. They just don't have as much 'mind' real estate as the "bitch" does.
Take a break----needs edit------------

A good way to make your art more fluid is by using a line of action! Like, when you make a stick figure base, curve the spine and just be loose with it!! Also look it up if need be, I'm bad at explaining things sometimes;; ~jjba anon
While that does sould useful for full bodies, I usually stick to headshots and I cant imagine being able to use that method for arms

You know what I like about your art? Right away I can tell it’s you. You got a recognizable style but there’s still variety in shapes and faces which is hard for artists to have 😊
Thank you! ^u^
My "trick" is that I hate rules. I oppose rules and how things should be done. If someone says "This is how it's done" my immediate reaction is NO. Exceptions are if the person is honestly someone who has wisdom, a teacher/mentor I study with or seek guidance from, or a client wanting a certain thing (which I'm capable of doing). Even with mentors I'm suspicious with; if they suggest something, I will give it a try to see if it fits me and if not, I don't hesitate to ditch it. I kept banging my head with my art teacher at the art school quite a lot as our approaches in creating art and art itself where the opposite, and her ethics weren't sitting well with me. Whenever she tried to control our artistic expression just to suit her own taste with no connection to the thing(s) we were learning, I did the opposite of her wishes. Despite this I graduated with good scores and an A+ thesis.
Because that's what you need to do as a creative person; carve your own path. Find whatever inspires you. Let the artistic expression run freely in whatever form it appears through you, without judging it. The problem with many artists, especially hobby artists and young ones learning, is that there's like 1-3 accepted styles and everyone tries to squeeze themselves into one of those. Even art schools are teaching stuff based on a few main principles. An European color theory and how to make art is completely different by its fundamentals to Chinese modern art, to Sudanese art, to 1920's Jakartan art, to cave paintings, to Samish art, to 18th century newspaper illustrations. There's naivism, cubism, abstract art, pointillism, expressionism...
There's no right style, wrong style, wrong or right combinations. There's no rules to follow, the art doesn't even have to be anatomically correct in any way! Look just how wonderful professional artist Miroco Machiko's art is! She just paints the shapes and colors of the animals and that's it:
Tumblr media
Tsutomu Nihei didn't hesitate to combine his architect's profession to a Japanese manga, and create Blame! where single panels reach to eternity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or Bayonetta! No one said "Oh no, we just CAN'T combine a romantic jazz classic recomposed into a groovy battle theme for a witch killing angels with different torture devices, and season this all with sexual undertones!"
No one stopping you from mixing 6 different art style together either, right?! Make your art look like Chinese WWII posters with touch of glamrock with Middle-African colors and Ancient Egyptian profiles. Who else is stopping you from experimenting than your own hand? P.S. In reality, I use the same base for all faces. The difference comes only from hairstyle, nose, eyebrows and sometimes with eye shapes. Otherwise? Same stuff. If Miyazaki can rotate the same face archetypes in all his movies, so frigging can I!

The BNHA x Chobits AU that no one, not even Mineta, asked for.
The ramblings of my mind under the cut. Warning, it’s loooong.
Okay, so bear in mind that I only watched four episodes of Chobits and it was probably about 14 years ago, and also I didn’t really like it, lol
-Todoroki finds Midoriya laying on some bags of trash next to a dumpster.
-First he’s like “oh no, I need an adult,” because for all his “training,” dad never actually told him what to do when he found a dead body, (this is the summer before he starts U.A., so he’s still living at home). Endeavor is away for a week, and Fuyumi doesn’t count to him (sort of an Aristocats, “she’s not [an adult,] she’s just a sister!” thing). While he’s trying to remember that the police exist, he notices this dead body has very strange ear-like things. He comes closer to investigate. There are lots of weird body types in the world, because of quirks, but these things look metal, which isn’t unheard of, but something about these ears just strike him as unnatural.
- Good news, it seems like a robot, not a dead body. The ears open easily, and there are buttons inside. A power button (that’s right CHOBITS!! It’s in the ear! My love story isn’t going to start with molestation), some USB ports, an aux port, a slot for a microchip or SIM card or whatever, some sort of safety switch (he flips that on)…what really convinces him this is totally a robot are the blutooth and volume buttons (that’s right, Midoriya in this au can charge phones AND he’s a speaker, although the volume buttons’ primary function is to control the volume of his voice).
- He has no good reason for taking this thing home. It weights a ton, it’s awkwardly naked, except for some bandages wrapped around it, which do nothing to hide how anatomically correct this robot is, and he already has a phone charger, so he really has no use for it.
- He feels weird about it though. While he was checking out the ears, he touched its face and the skin was soft and warm. He checked for a pulse, just out of curiosity, and found one. It looks like a person, aside from the ears, and it feels like a person. He feels bad leaving it in the trash. So he takes it home.
- Cue comedy routine where he gets this thing, not just in the house, but to his room without Fuyumi noticing.
- Once in his room, he hits the power switch. Nothing happens. He holds the power switch. Bingo. Robo-boy powers to life, bright, adorably large green eyes open. He’s holding it in his arms, and it’s still all tied up. It looks up at him and says hello.
- He drops it.
- He apologizes as he picks it back up, tugging at the wrappings to try to get its arms free. He realizes he needs to get pants, or at least boxers, for it, because it’s awake now and very much naked.
- For the very first time, he realizes that this adorable, thin-yet-lean-muscled, between 14-16 looking robo-boy might have been someone’s weird sex doll. They probably threw it away because they found a real person to date and they didn’t want them to know about their underage sex robot. This also sort of explains the pulse; the mystery pervert person probably programmed a fake pulse and did something to make his skin warm, to make him feel more real. Gross.
- He’s broken from these thoughts when the robot speaks. It says, “Please insert memory bank files or turn on base memory.” Todoroki is already freaking out, because this thing wants its memories, and he doesn’t have them. He opens the ear again and investigates. Next to the empty slot, there’s a small button labeled BM. Base memory? Sure, why not. He pushes it.
- The robot goes blank faced for a few seconds. When he comes to, he looks at Todoroki, then the room, then down at himself. He flexes his arms, trying to break the bands around him, but stops, saying, “Safety mode is on.”
- Todoroki finishes helping unwrap him, awkwardly doing so while pointedly looking away, once he gets to his lower half. Once he’s free, he goes and gets a pair of boxers and throws them in his direction. “Can you put them on?” He’s curious if the robot can do something like that unaided, and also he doesn’t want to cloth it himself, because even though this is a robot, it looks like a very cute boy his age. And it has a pulse. He can’t stop thinking about that.
- The robot puts on the boxers, after inspecting them for a second. He honestly does struggle to figure it out for a moment, cause he has zero common sense, but he does figure it out. It probably takes him about a minute. Once they’re on, he stands and starts inspecting the room.
- “Do you have a name?” seems like a dumb question, but he asks anyway and the robot answers, “I’m Project Midoriya.”
- Background info time. Midoriya is not fully a robot. He was kidnapped just seven months ago, coming home from school. It was the day of the sludge villain attack, but he got nabbed before they could cross paths. AFO wanted a quirkless person to experiment on. He did his research and found Midoriya Izuku, a quirkless boy with no friends and little family, who wouldn’t be missed very much. He’s confident enough that he won’t get caught that he titles his new project by its name: Midoriya. Midoriya’s memories are still in his mind, but they’re suppressed. AFO found it easier to backup his memories to a chip, so he could remove them as needed. When they were installed, Midoriya responded best to his own name anyway, so calling him that was also the easiest thing. Without his memories, AFO found him a bit annoying, because he had no social skills or common sense. He needed to be taught, which he didn’t have the patience for, so usually he just left the memories in. He was a timid boy anyway and easy to intimidate, especially if he threaten to hurt his mom.
- The cops figure his disappearance was maybe a runaway situation, but given his track record and the profile on him they’d compiled from listening to his mom, classmates, and teachers, they figure it’s more likely a kidnapping or murder. Fun fact though, he got kidnapped the day Bakugou told him to kill himself. Obviously no body is found, but he knows people go to forests to hang themselves, or put weights in their pockets and drown themselves. Those bodies can take years to find. So while all of this is happening, Bakugou is out there just every day, “what have I done, what have I done, what have I done?” When they finally see each other again, Bakugou freaks out and Midoriya’s suppressed memories are triggered. Bakugou demands answers, Todoroki is confused and defensive, and Midoriya is just, “System overload. Shutting down,” and then face plants to the floor.
- Anyway, back to Shouto. He asks Midoriya if he remembers anything. Midoriya has exactly one memory (or at least, one easily accessible memory), and it’s this: “A man. He looked like this.” He put his hand over his face. “He said, ‘Sensei put so much work into you. Why are you so useless (Deku)?’”
- More bg info, AFO gave Midoriya to Shigaraki, telling him to try to make him useful, and Shigaraki DID try for a couple of months, but he was over the whole situation after basically one day. With his memories, Midoriya was scared and traumatized, had morals, cried a bunch and sometimes tried to escape, and was just UGH. He could mute his voice, but even that didn’t help, cause this kid was just sooo annoying. Without his memories he was awkward and boring and still annoying. Eventually he just yeeted him into a trash heap, but took his memory chip, since it technically contains LoV information.
- Midoriya considers his only memory and thinks being called Deku feels sort of normal, so he says as much. “Deku might also be my name. You can call me that, if you want.” Todoroki says he’ll stick with Midoriya, because Deku isn’t a nice name for his new robot friend.
- So the first section of the story after this is fairly light-hearted. Todoroki has to keep Midoriya a secret from Endeavor and Fuyumi (I feel like she does find out eventually, but agrees to help hide him, as she sees it’s good for her little bro to finally have this (maybe?) living thing/person to talk to and take care of.) Speaking of care, Midoriya is very easy to care for. He can eat, drink, and sleep, but doesn’t need to. He has some sort of self-charging system. Most of his “care” involves teaching him social skills (which oof, blind leading the blind, but they say teaching is the best way to learn, so this is actually good for Shouto too). Embarrassing stuff happens. Fluffy stuff happens. It’s a good time.
- Shouto spends the summer with Midoriya this way. Most of their interactions are fluffy and light, but not all. The first time he comes back to his room after training with his dad, he learns two things: Midoriya has first aid knowledge programmed into him and he’s capable of crying. As the trainings continue, Midoriya eventually reveals that he has over a hundred fighting styles programmed into him and knows over 70 ways to kill a person, but he can’t access any of that information while his safety is on. Todoroki is just like, “Uuuuuh, that’s really good to know…but we’re gonna keep the safety on for now, okay? I hate my dad but also please don’t murder him. He’s famous so we wouldn’t get away with it. Also murder is bad, don’t kill people.”
- Midoriya wants to know if all heroes are like Endeavor and Shouto is like, noooo and shows him the debut video of his personal favorite hero: All Might. Watching this video is the first time Midoriya has a “System overloading. Shutting down” moment. Shouto has an absolute panic attack, because if Midoriya reboots and his memories are wiped, then he’ll have lost the best friend he ever had. But Midoriya restarts and he’s fine. He explains that sometimes he shuts down, to prevent a system failure, which would damage his…idk, hard drive or whatever. He quietly admits that the All Might video is very familiar, and he thinks maybe it used to be important to him. Shouto questions him about his memories and Midoriya theorizes that perhaps he has them backed up, but he isn’t sure how to access them.
- This is exciting for Shouto, because he thinks maybe if Midoriya experiences more “triggers,” like the video, he might regain his memories and be able to shed some light on the general mystery of where he came from/who made him/what his purpose is. Whenever Endeavor is away, he tries to sneak Midoriya out, so he can see the real world. He isn’t too concerned about his ears, because in a world of quirks, there are plenty of odd looking people around. So far he’s been wearing Todoroki’s clothes, which a little too big on him, so they go shopping and get him clothes. None of their outings seem to trigger anything, except one time when they pass a park where Midoriya and Bakugou used to play as kids. Midoriya grows quiet and seems far away for a moment, but he doesn’t overload and shakes off the familiar feeling.
- Whenever they see All Might stuff he’s just !!!!!!! He can’t remember why he likes All Might, but he remembers how he feels about him. The more All Might stuff he sees, the more his old feelings return. One day they pass a large All Might poster and Midoriya says, “I think maybe I wanted to be like him, once.”
- Eventually Todoroki starts school. He feels bad about leaving him, but Midoriya is content to stay in his room and occupy himself until Todoroki comes home. He’s part computer, so he’s a total boss at helping with math homework. He likes doing homework with Todoroki in general, because he likes learning. This is great for Todoroki’s grades because again, the teaching thing helps everything stick better for him.
- The attack on USJ happens and Todoroki sees Shigaraki, who has a hand on his face, and he’s like, “Shit, shit, shit, this is the guy who threw away Midoriya,” and he has NO idea what to do with that information. Midoriya belonging to the LoV does explain the “70+ ways to kill” programming though. He tells Midoriya what happened and Midoriya is kind of whatever about it. He says, “Maybe I belonged to villains, but I belong to you, now.” And Shouto is like, “No, no, no, no. You do not. You belong to yourself” and Midoriya is just ????
- I think for the Sports Festival, Midoriya convinces him to use his fire. It’s sort of like, “It’s your power, even though its origin is Endeavor. Just like how everything I can do is my power, even though I was programmed by villains. Being made by villains doesn’t make me a villain. Using the resources they gave me doesn’t make me a villain. Being Endeavor’s son doesn’t make you Endeavor, and using your fire doesn’t either.” Todoroki turns off Midoriya’s safety, confident he has nothing to fear.
- Midoriya watches the Sports Festival on tv (using his blutooth, he can actually just hear the volume in his head, so he can watch silently). He sees Bakugou. Seeing him on screen doesn’t have a huge impact on him, but he does feel something. Fear, unease, admiration, and affection. He’s confused and uncomfortable, and ends up looking away from the screen whenever he’s shown for too long.
- Shouto actually starts making friends at school. Being with Midoriya has taught him a lot about being kind and the joy having other people in your life can bring. Still, he doesn’t trust anyone enough to tell them about Midoriya. He’s terrified of losing him.
- For the Hosu incident, Midoriya is home alone, probably doing something on Shouto’s laptop. He sees the breaking news and is just, “Welp, that’s where Shouto, the official best person in the world, is, so guess I’m going to Hosu to make sure he’s safe.” He leaves the house alone, for the first time ever, and just runs to Hosu. Idk how far away Hosu is from the Todoroki residence, but Midoriya doesn’t fatigue and he’s also outrageously fast, so it’s fine. Also he can see in the dark, but only if he activates his night vision, which makes his eyes glow. Not good for sneaking, but very pretty and cool. I’m not sure how he finds Shouto, or how Shouto found Iida, but I imagine Stain is like, seconds from skewering him and then Midoriya comes out of nowhere and collides with Stain (which is a big deal, cause remember, Midoriya is filled with metal parts and is super heavy). They fight together and at some point Stain cuts Midoriya and he bleeds, which for Shouto is like !?!??! And then he licks his blood and the paralysis works and Shouto is just !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Later, after the life threatening stuff is over, Todoroki has some seriously thoughts about this, because what if Midoriya is human? Or part human? That would be a huge development, and also kind of relief for him, because he sort of feels like he’s been falling in love, but he’s been desperately stomping down on those feelings, because he knows falling in love with a robot probably isn’t healthy. But falling in love with a half robot? I mean, Iida could be called part robot, with his legs, if you want to get technical about it. And Todoroki does want to get technical about it, thank you very much. If Iida is dateable, then so is Midoriya.
- Back to Hosu. They beat Stain and, after securing him, Todoroki tells Midoriya to go home, before his dad arrives. Once he leaves, he begs Iida not to tell anyone he saw him and promises to explain later. For ease of narrative, Native was unconscious the entire fight.
- Endeavor shows up, as does the Nomu. It takes Shouto but Stain rescues him. At the hospital, Todoroki explains the Midoriya situation to Iida, revealing that this incident was the first time he realized Midoriya had blood in him. Iida agrees to keep the secret, but urges Todoroki to tell someone. Maybe Aizawa. He agrees to consider, but he doesn’t want Midoriya to get taken away and like, locked up to be studied or something. He and Iida become better friends, bonding over almost dying together and sharing the secret of Midoriya.
- Midterms! Shouto scores higher because he has an awesome robot tutor. He doesn’t actually care, but good for him regardless.
- Summer field trip time. Midoriya can’t come, obviously. I’m thinking during this time, he decides to sneak out of the house and explore on his own. He feels guilty, because Shouto would worry if he knew, but he just feels this draw. He feels like maybe his old memories were important, and he’s becoming curious. He keeps thinking about the boy from the Sports Festival and about All Might. He ends up in his old neighborhood. He sees his middle school and he doesn’t remember anything, but seeing the building makes him feel lonely and sort of bad about himself. It reminds him of Shigaraki calling him Deku, and the familiar feeling that gave him. He leaves and finds himself on his old street. He isn’t close at all to his old home - he can barely see the apartment building - but he can still see it. He almost shuts down, but turns away quickly and starts back the way he came. He doesn’t remember anything, but seeing that building fills him with overwhelming emotions. The strongest one reminds him of his feelings for Shouto, but it’s different. He can’t place it, but he knows he’d die to protect Shouto, and he feels like maybe he once knew someone in that building that he would also die to protect. Once he gets home, he realizes he’s crying. He decides to sleep and he dreams of green eyes and a smile that looks like home.
- Shouto is injured during the villain attack and goes to the hospital. Once he’s released, he agrees with Kirishima that they’ll go rescue Bakugou. That whole thing pretty much goes at it did in canon, except All Might never found a successor, so he’s more powerful. He defeats AFO and does not have to retire, though he’s feeling an overwhelming pressure to find a successor now, because he knows he’s hanging on by a thread.
- Dorms!! Shouto is bringing his boy with him. He figures he can hide him just as easily there as he can at home. Getting him in is a little tricky, but he manages. From there, it’s smooth sailing.
- Except not really, because living with 18-19 other people (19 if Hitoshi is in the class, which, maybe) is way different than living with 2. Midoriya is discovered in like, a week and everyone is freaking out, most of all Bakugou, who basically breaks down. He tries to hit Midoriya and screams at him, about thinking he was dead and going to his funeral and how it was his fault and having to face his mom and did Midoriya even think about his mom??? As previously mentioned, Midoriya just shuts down and face plants to the ground.
- Shouto finally learns Midoriya’s full name. Midoriya Izuku. A+ name. Very cute. He plans to use it immediately.
- Bakugou’s insight changes the situation completely. Now they know Izuku was once 100% human and something awful happened to him. They end up bringing him to Aizawa and explaining the situation and everything they know. Todoroki gets scolded, cause Izuku could have been dangerous and he should have known better, but he doesn’t even pretend to have regrets. Endeavor would have made him throw Izuku back into the trash where he found him. His best friend isn’t trash.
- Now the name of the game is helping Izuku restore his memories. Bakugou is a huge help, but patience is required, to keep Izuku from overloading. He remembers bits and pieces at a time, all centered around Bakugou. Aizawa agrees to let him attend classes, so they can keep an eye on him. He’s also hoping a school setting might trigger more memories. He meets All Might and he doesn’t even get to announce his system malfunction before he’s out. He sees him, starts smoking at the mouth and hits the floor. All Might is very alarmed.
- Tsukauchi is made aware of the situation. He wants to keep things under wraps though. If the LoV is aware Midoriya is out and about, they may target him. If they can restore his memories though, they may gain insight into the group’s plans. That being said, he thinks it’s only right that they tell Inko. They tell her they have information on her son and make her sign a contract, agreeing not to release any information. Once she agrees, they brief her on what they know and, at the end, bring in Izuku.
- Izuku has been talking with Bakugou about his mom, to prepare for this (he usually wants Shouto with him for these conversations, and Shouto and Bakugou sort on inadvertently become friends). He can’t remember her at all, but he remembers the face in his dream. He knows it’s her. While talking, he’s shut down a few times (which drives Bakugou up the wall, and also scares him a little, cause he kind of looks dead when it happens), but he thinks he might be ready to see her now. He’s brought in and he does not shut down, not fully, but he comes close. He definitely glitches a little, maybe doing a quick reboot, quick enough that he doesn’t even fall, and his voice comes out cracked and metallic when he speaks, and there are sparks in his mouth, but he manages, “Mom?” They both cry and she holds him while he tells her, voice wavering between sounding normal and sounding robotic, that he doesn’t remember her, but he loves her, he knows he loves her so so much and he knows he’s missed her, even though he didn’t know who she was. It’s very emotional, and extremely hard for both of them when they finally have to separate, because Izuku can’t go home with her. She’s allowed to visit though, and each visit helps him restore little pieces of his memory. Between her and Bakugou, he starts making enough progress that he stops shutting down when he gains a new memory, and he starts remembering his old hopes and dreams. He doesn’t remember what AFO did to him, but he remembers enough of his past to feel self-conscious now, about his body. He breaks down one day and Shouto holds him while he grapples with his identity, his humanity, and his future.
- I’m picturing a scene where he’s crying and Shouto takes his face in his hands and explains all the beautiful things about him that make him human, and he finishes up with something corny like, “I know you, Izuku. You’re human. You have to be human, because I’m in love with you.” And then they KISS and it is ROMANTIC!
- He decides he still wants to be a hero and he becomes a real member of 1A, instead of just a visitor. The whole class helps him design a costume and come up with a name and in general are just like, “Cyborg Hero, yay!!”
- And that’s all I got. I think eventually he would fight the league, and probably retrieve his chip, giving him 100% of his memories. There’s a LOT of trauma to deal with there, because he was basically torn apart and put back together several times by AFO, but they do gain all the information they need to take down the LoV for good. And the Overhaul arc is in there. Izuku might still intern with Nighteye, because All Might is like, “Robot successor? Maybe???” and he wants Nighteye’s opinion. Nighteye can’t see his future, because he’s not fully human, but eventually he gives his stamp of approval. Eri is rescued and that’s a very personal fight for Izuku, because he identifies with what she’s gone through. And of course she loves him and thinks his ears are cute and his glowy eyes are pretty.
- Oh, and the School Festival. I honestly don’t even know what to do with him. He can learn any instrument just by like, downloading some YouTube tutorial videos. He can learn any dance by watching it once. He’s really strong, really fast, and can also operate as a speaker (though that can be awkward, cause it’s through his mouth, so he’d just be standing there with his mouth open). They might keep his role same as canon, idk. They’d probably all fight over him.
- I’m sure none of this was anything like Chobits. Sorry. I just think the ears are neat, really, and liked the idea of Izuku being a cyborg (Chobits isn’t even about cyborgs, lol).
Sorry this is outrageously long! If you want to write this into a full fic, feel free to use my ideas! Just give me a shoutout, maybe? And tell me about it, so I can read it!

Fic: Firefly’s Glow - Part 8/?
Tumblr media
Chapter 1: Part 1 | Part 2 Chapter 2: Part 3 | Part 4   Chapter 3: Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 Chapter 4: Part 8  You are Here From the Beginning: FF | AO3 Summary: Imprisoned by the Hood, Gordon dreams of his oldest brother and of fireflies - but of course the Hood had to steal that memory too, in addition to his baldric, his boots, and Virgil’s face. What else could he possibly steal? He discovers the answer is quite a bit, and Gordon has to learn to navigate his new world, its new dangers, and the overbearing presence of his brothers’ desire to help what they can’t fix. This part ~  1.2K words – the sky, the stars, and the sea (or: Scott and John take care of Gordon) TW: Thunderstorms for this part, and slight drinking.  Thanks to @godsliltippy for the read through.  -----
Rain trailed down the villa’s windows with a steady pitter-patter as intermittently the grey sky growled with a fervent rumble in the distance. There was a difference to the way a storm sounded, striking instead a blanket of leafy, green canopy as opposed to the plains of their Kansas home – and this time it was joined in its chorus with the tossing of the sea waves upon the sandy beaches and rocky alcoves of Tracy Island.
Muted through the windowpanes it was, but Scott was listening for it. It was the sound of life-giving water returning to its home. Sky to sea. Eventually sea to sky, and back again.
The cycle helped him breathe through the weight in his chest.
The figurative one. Gordon was hardly heavy at the moment, more a feather’s breath sleeping soundly on the pillow his torso provided, rising up and lowering down with the motion of his lungs.
There was a reason Scott kept his breaths steady.
He pressed at the space between his eyes, where his nose met his aching head. Though the slumbering form shifted at the movement, Gordon did not wake. Despite the circumstances, he couldn’t help but smile fondly down at the figure curled on top of him and the childish googly-eyed smiley face that grinned at him on the camo shirt above where Gordon’s injured right arm was sprawled over his belly.
The doll clothes had been John’s idea. After a quick net search by EOS, some call outs from the Space Elevator on John’s way to the Island, and finally a quick pallet pick up from the brand’s warehouse in Thunderbird 1 on Scott’s way home, they were now owners of a pallet of 6-inch dolls of randomized styles.
It had been easiest and quickest to buy them in bulk, and the clothes weren’t sold separately. They’d have some doll toys they could keep in Thunderbird 2 for future rescues when all this was over, and the rest could be donated to the children’s hospital on the mainland. But in the meantime, Gordon had picked a few pieces to wear, and the first order of business had been for his brothers to pry the damn dolls out of their packaging so they could get to the clothes, which were either pull over or Velcro.
Even with doll proportions where a good chunk of the size came from the large, non-anatomically correct heads, the apparel was still slightly oversized on their brother.
“How is he?”  came John’s patient, dulcet tone from around the corner, clasping two half-full glasses of amber and raising an inquiring eye when he realized Scott was in fact not at their dad’s desk where he left him, but lying on the couch propped up slightly on one arm and with his long legs propped over the other.
“Exhausted,” Scott answered thickly, his voice low. “We were just going to rest a moment.”
And they’d needed it. Debrief had been…. Hard.
They’d made it through the details of the original rescue in the standard amount of time and dreaded the next part, though no one expected Gordon to flat out refuse to talk until Virgil left.
Virgil had paled at the statement, argued for Gordon to let him help until he was hoarse with it. And Gordon just shook his head. In the end, Scott agreed that they should do as Gordon asked, because he could feel how tightly Gordon was pulling at his collar.
Scott hated that look of betrayal in Virgil’s eyes as he stormed off, the “fine” breaking off with a brittle catch of air. He’d wanted to follow Grandma and Alan to make sure he was okay, but Gordon needed him.
And though he hadn’t understood it at the time, he did now.
His heart ached for Gordon.
It ached for Virgil too. He was going to be devastated.
“Hey, Scott. You with me?” John asked with a swirl of the glass, the ice clinking against the side. He gently nudged Scott’s legs back as he sat down on the edge of the couch. “Figured we both could use one of these after that.”
Scott hummed in agreement. Once Gordon had felt comfortable with just Scott and John in the room, the story had come tumbling out. Every painful and cruel detail.
He accepted the glass and shifted up just a bit to give John slightly more room. It was a more comfortable position for sipping, but not so far propped up that Gordon would start to slide. Just in case, he also rested his left arm across his stomach so he could support him if he did.
A crackle lit up the sky for a moment, and the cool burn of whiskey slid down his throat. “Helluva day,” he whispered, his breath heavy.
John nodded, brushing back the ginger hair that fell into his face. “We can fix this, Scott,” he stated, gaze sharp as emerald green abandoned the copper inside his glass to meet weary blue. “Kayo’s out pursuing leads, and I have EOS looking. We’ll figure this out.”
Scott watched a bead of condensation cling to his glass, much slower in its run through the cycle than its raindrop cousins outside. He rubbed it gently with his thumb, which came back wet while the glass appeared silkier, smoother and yet when he looked at the world through it, everything distorted in angled amber.
John coughed, then cleared his throat. “So, I had to tell Grandma.”
Scott frowned at him. “You heard what he said.” Gordon hadn’t wanted anyone else to know.
“Right,” John scoffed. “Have you ever seen Grandma take no for an answer? She cornered me on the way to the restroom. She said she gets it. She won’t reveal anything until Gordon’s ready. But Virgil’s really hurt.”
He knew that and despised that this was something big brothers couldn’t just put a bandage on and fix. “I don’t like having to keep this from him.”
“No one does,” John agreed, “but we have to trust in Gordon. It’s what he wants. For now.”
Outside the thunder clapped, the storm closing in on the villa with a rush of rain. Even after all this time, even with listening so intently to the storm build, the volume took him by surprise. Despite the exercises, there were times – too often than he’d like to admit – that thunder didn’t sound like thunder.
Air caught, just for a moment in Scott’s lungs. He forced the fear back down with a mouthful of fire, listened to the rain, focused on the cycles.
Above his fluttering heart, Gordon stirred. “Why,” he mumbled, “...th’boat stop?” He blinked groggily up at the ceiling, at John then Scott. “Oh.”
“Go back to sleep, Gordon,” John encouraged. “Sorry we woke you.”
“‘S’ok.” Gordon tapped to get his attention, and Scott looked down at the pressure, meeting small, but just as equally determined brown eyes. “Hey. Jus’ a storm.”
“I know, Gordo,” Scott whispered. “Sleep.”
Agreement was muffled into his shirt and faded quickly as the tiny grip went slack.
Eventually glasses were emptied, refilled, and finally abandoned as the storm blew through. And finally, when Scott’s lids lowered, John cleaned up and took over at their father’s desk to pick up the reports where Scott left off, keeping a watchful eye on his brothers as always.

What kind of clothes do the Stygian ROs like to wear? Thanks!
Oooo well, most of the cast wears work-related clothing but I do have some idea of their fashion sense!
Treble wears heavy-duty utility overalls or a mechanics jumpsuit. They tend to get hot easy and so the top half of their overalls or suit is usually undone and tied around their waist. They like to wear tank-tops or button-ups underneath their overalls, plain one for works and then fun patterned ones for play;)
Marci wears a lot of black, unsurprisingly. There’s no dress code for a bar tender, at least when its a bar that you own. But she like to keep her wardrobe simple, black jeans, short, etc. and usually a plain white or black top with some type of flannel or jean jacket for chilly nights.
Damian still has most of his work clothes, despite retiring years ago. Slacks and fitted pressed shirts that just sit at the back of his closet. Now he mostly wears the same seven knitted sweaters or a basic flannel and shirt with jeans, think millennial dad fashion. And of course, his dog(I think this the first time I’ve mentioned Thelma) has matching lil doggie sweaters.
Eden is probably the most fashionable of the bunch. Which is ironic considering the heavy restrictions on clothing and jewelry in labs. They’ve gotten pretty good at skirting dress codes and now that they’re technically their own boss doing field-work, anything(within in reason) goes! They like to dress up traditional academic styles, adding pops of color to traditional pieces like buttons-ups and long skirts. They also love to wear statement jewelry, large chunky pieces, their favorite are this long, anatomically correct tentacles;)
Beacon is confused by clothes. They see the appeal in expression but is utterly fascinated by the way certain aspects of clothes are culturally approved and looked down upon. Pockets, a utility, are neglected in clothes for one groups of humans but standard in another. It’s mind-boggling to them(to me as well tbh) There’s no way for them to wear clothes in their current body but they’d be open to concept.

I’ve been a professional artist for a long time now, and I don’t think I’ve ever had a defined style. At least not in a comic or cartoon sense. So I just decided to steal everyone else’s!
I joke.
But I follow a lot of really fantastic artists of Miraculous on here, and I wanted to try my hand at the different amazing styles and just sort of experiment and compare the differences in eyes and noses. Everyone seems to do proportions a little different, and as a primarily realistic artist, I had to stop myself from thinking in anatomically correct, and go for artistically correct. I couldn’t just shrink the eyes and put them farther apart, because then the style would be lost.
I thought this exercise was extremely fun and it kept me in practice. (I probably should have done it digitally, but it’s a study so whatever...)
The first drawing is what I consider my style, pre-painting. Then we have canon Adrien, which was difficult to render 2D from 3D (it still looks a little off.)
@edendaphne‘s style, I’ve always enjoyed. Her hands are expertly done, and her profiles are beautiful. Of course, I drew an Adrien with neither of those things lol I noticed that her eyes are a little taller, the pupils are a little more cat like than pure circles. Gorgeous sloping noses and varying line thickness. It’s fantastic
@yunyin‘s style, I think, is similar to Eden’s with varying line thickness to give definition, as well as really three-dimensional characters. The eyes are rounder, with almost a jellybean shape to them. She’s also really great at hands, and I’m jealous
@tresity has been plugging away at a comic, and when I was flipping through it for references, I noticed a vast improvement since she started. As well as her style developing a little more concretely. Thin lines, and it’s very sharp. I just really like it
@atelierbailey God I love your Adrien. I was so excited when I tried to replicate it. I love the mouth and eyes. The subtle cat lips are just so fun! But it’s a pain in the butt to draw lol. I really like the eyes too
@french-fry-gallery I enjoy your mouths so much. The heart shape is really a defining feature of your style. I can pick it out right away.
@ladyblargh your style was way harder than I was expecting lol I kept wanting to make the eyes smaller and farther apart, but it didn’t look right. (Very very wrong in fact) There’s just something really pleasant about your style thats fun to look at and memorable.
@ladybeug I’m so so sorry, I butchered it. Your style is so simple, but so wonderful. It’s iconic, and fun, and almost feels like a french cartoon from the 1950′s. My version looks like a sad Charlie Brown lol. I love black cat Adrien, so I included him! ❤️
@buggachat I. Love. Your. Stuff. Its very fun and simple, but not too simple, because I goofed up plenty trying to replicate it. It’s very soft, and lends itself well to your very soft and fluffy comics. Perfection
@zoe-oneesama I don’t know if my Adrien is as cute as yours. He’s definitely not as fashionable! I love Scarlet Lady, I eagerly read each update, and I throughly enjoy how you draw it. Its very cute and fun! Your was another style that I had to tell myself not to go into drawing anatomically correct, that the eyes needed to be bigger and the nose smaller etc. It’s just adorable
@doppelgangergrl What no one gets to see in this version of Adrien, is how good you are with colors. Your comic has these really nice muted colors that make the pages really legible and pleasing to look at. You have great definition in the lines, and I love the squareness in the eyes, nose, and lips. It all feels very angular without being harsh. Lovely stuff!
@masilvi Ugh. Your expressions are great, your camera angles and page compositions are great, and the subtle details are just so nice. I love the eyes, the thickness of the eyelashes, and the nice slope to the nose. The way you do hair is really nice too, and similar to how I do it, I think! I just love love love it
@sweetsweetsweetie Out Sick has me weak for my poor poor sad sick cat boy. I would define your style by the floofs. Your hair is very floofly, and I love it! I also really like that your style is more anatomically correct instead of cartoony, without loosing the vibrant expressions. Its very vibrant and I look forward to sundays!
If you haven’t checked out any of these artists before, be sure to do so! They’re all fantastic, and they all deserve a huge audience! I had a lot of fun with this exercise, and I hope no one gets mad at me for analyzing their work lol

Previous post over here. Now it's time to use the references from before to alter the vrock to have a more anatomically correct skeleton and musculature. First I sketch out how i think the skeleton should look:
Tumblr media
Image description: the first altered picture of the vrock with better wings, faded out so I could draw the skeleton over it. I have corrected the length of the leg that's further back, because it looked pretty long compared to the other one. But where no ribcage really fit before I have now draw a much larger ribcage with a large keel bone so it has somewhere for flight muscles to anchor. And since it has both wings and arms, I've given it an extended shoulder blade. Part of it drops down to cup the arm shoulder while the rest is long and thin like a bird shoulder blade to create the wing joint.
Is that a realistic way to draw this shoulder? Well frankly there are no real animals with wings and arms so this is the type of fantasy anatomy that has to be fudged a little. It's perfectly okay to fudge some anatomy when designing a creature that doesn't exist! But my purpose with this blog is to point out creature designs that just straight up ignore all anatomy for the sake of Aesthetics like making the vrock incredibly scrawny and lanky just because it looks creepier.
So now I add the Beef.
Tumblr media
Image description: same image as before but the skeleton is faded out a little so I can draw muscles over it. I'm no professional expert in how to draw muscles but I can at least get some nice basic shapes down as a guide. It's important to think about where muscles anchor and how they overlap, as well as considering that there still needs to be space for internal organs and that adding skin and such will obscure the muscle shapes somewhat.
I've put the wing pectorals in a position to overlap the arm shoulder muscle. Since they're so close together, one kinda has to take precedence over the other or there will just be too much muscle bulk. So the arm muscles stay kinda scrawny and the wing muscles take up more space.
So the final result of these alterations!
Tumblr media
Image description: the vrock with better wings and a bigger barrel shaped chest. To give it that look, I just selected parts of the base image of the vrock and reshaped them into the new beefier figure. It still has its long scrawny arms, but I've fixed the shoulder position a little. I also added feathers to the chest and upper arms to help them blend into the body (and to cover up the weird shrink wrapped muscle texture the original had.)
And that's that! The original design of the vrock has been altered into something that looks like it can actually fly now.
And my next posts will detail my own process to totally redesign the vrock in my own style. Next

Hi Allie! I wondered if I could ask you for some advice. I want to draw really badly and create art but I really don't have any skill! I know that in order to get better at art I have to actually do it, but I feel so overwhelmed by how I'm not where I want to be with it right away, and also with where to start with learning to draw. Do you ever feel that way when you draw? And if you do how have you gotten past it?
[I am literally so sorry this is so long oh my God. My mind has been very jumbled lately so I accidentally rambled too much, but I hope it still helps you in any way orz] Oh sweet little anon.. ;^; I do feel that way, a lot of the time if not all of the time! Just recently this week, I felt like I just couldn't draw despite picking up my pencil and scribbling, it just wasn't working partly for that exact reason! Overwhelmed by not being where I want to be with it! These things happen and its frustrating. It's hard for me to imagine as a beginner artist because I've been drawing since I can remember but I will still do my best to offer you some meaningful advice!
But first, to answer your very last question, getting past it can be a little random sometimes. This whole week after being unable to draw, I was laying in bed trying to sleep while reflecting on some heavy feelings ive been having and memories. Suddenly part of an image flashed in my mind and I got up to immediately try drawing it. (The drawing I recently posted and captioned "parade"!) I worked on it completely driven by my heart, and so it didn't matter at the time if it looked good or was anatomically correct, etc. Right now I am working on another heart-driven drawing, but if I tried to work on lets say a study or character drawing instead.. I dont think i could!
My point in all this is that, I think that its important to know/understand why you want to create art, and I think my advice would change slightly depending on your answer. For me personally, I am an emotional artist. I create art that (usually) reflects how I'm feeling or topics I am emotionally drawn to. Illustrations, drawing characters, writing comics, etc.. I think this week, while I'm definitely struggling with my skill level, I was so burdened by some things I've been feeling lately that I couldn't focus on or enjoy anything that I was trying to create, until I was able to release it all in a drawing. (And I'm still not done with them hence why I am now working on another related drawing, but im making SOMETHING and feeling passionate which cannot be said with any of my other attempts this week.) So since these drawings purpose outweigh my current issues regarding my skill, I am able to work on them. If that makes sense?
Okay im sorry with how long-winded this all is so far and all about myself orz but I wanted to give context on how I view art and I think if you asked someone who creates like. Hyperrealistic drawings their answers would be completely different. So! I wanted you to be able to judge if my advice would work for you if that makes any sense at all...!!! Moving on to my actual advice then..!
This is a little general ofc because I dont know what sort of art you are creating, or what your passion behind it is. And if after this you would like to tell me more about your art I would love to hear! 🥺💗 you are welcome to dm me or if you send another anon/ask i think that would be good too since.. well other artists who see can also give their own advice too!
Okay. So anyways lol, first I want to tell you that your desire to create art makes you an artist, despite your skill level. And therefore, everything and anything that you make even now has value. Even if right now you're drawing wonky shaded spheres and cubes! I understand its frustrating when wanting to make something but you feel like your skill isn't "there" and how that can prevent you from making anything to begin with!! But I really want you to try and work through it! Ignore it, disregard it, give your worries about your skill the silent treatment!! And I know its near impossible to do but if its getting in the way of you actually creating well.. thats the worst! We can't have that. If you really want to draw, then you really NEED to draw, you know what I mean? You deserve to draw! The hardest part for like 80% of artists is working around their skill level. I promise you will get there, but for now, you can't let it get in your way. And I realize me saying "oh you feel like you're not good at drawing and its hindering you from doing it? Just do it" sounds like Chad advice but ;---; unfortunately its the reality that comes with being an artist. If you tell me more about what you like to/why you want draw then maybe we can find some alternate lines of thinking that will help you (for example "this tiger i drew looks like shit but drawing all of her stripes was therapeutic and made it worth it!" If lets say you draw as a stim, opposed to "this tiger im drawing looks so bad I can't even look at it anymore " dhsjhd I really hope that this all makes sense lol.)
Moving on, learning how to draw.. this also depends on what you enjoy drawing but my main piece of advice here is study from real life. I grew up drawing cartoons and anime, and now that I want to draw a little more realistically.. its so hard!! If you study real shapes/people/animals/etc it might be easier later on when you understand fundamentals to bend them if you decide to create stylized or surreal art. However if right now you like to draw stylized art, I would recommend to keep working on your personal style while studying from real life on the side simultaneously! Any way you look at it, understanding how shapes, lighting, colour, etc work in the real world will help you out even with the most obscure pieces. And since art is a learned skill yknow you need to build those brain..pathways..and such. Im not a scientist but you get what i mean. Studies are the equivalent to lifting weights! I would recommend the website quickposes (com) they have a library of images that they throw at you at random. The site can explain itself better than I can lmao, check it out!!!
I really hope i was able to offer you something of value here, I didnt mean to ramble so much. I'm excited for you to grow as an artist, I love when I hear about others deciding to learn how to draw ;-; please feel welcome to ask for any clarification (as im having a hard time articulating my thoughts lately) or if you really just want to ask or say anything! ♡♡♡ again sorry if this was more than you bargained for length wise dhsishskshksj
