Spock: I’m asking for permission to date your brother
Sam: what is this? The dark ages? You know what, since you asked, no, you can’t. Beat me in a duel.

"strange new worlds is a serious show"
meanwhile:
- the captain is doing a pirate impression and the first officer looks like she wants to cry
- the chief of security is wondering around in a princess dress with a very very small dog
- the pilot is exclusively replying to the science officer's descriptions with "kaboom"
- the captain is referred to as starfleet's boy scout in his file
- the first officer and chief of security are playing enterprise bingo, which mostly seems to be an excuse to shoot each other with phasers
- the nurse is describing things as giving birth from your mouth to coerce difficult patients into medical treatment
- the captain is using soup to ignite mutiny
- the science officer is bodyswapped with his girlfriend and is using it to punch people he doesn't normally get to punch
- the doctor is treating an alarming amount of arrow wounds for a starship with no arrows
- the cadet is always right and yknow what she's rocking it
- the chief of security is recreationally making ensigns cry
- the first officer is very jealous because only one of them is allowed to make ensigns cry at a time
- the chief engineer is very violently befriending the cadet. it is somehow working
- the captain is cooking, all the time, for the whole crew. nobody has informed him that he is supposed to be captaining this crew, not parenting it, and they do not plan to

I've finally found the perfect, concise words to explain how SNW Spock is fundamentally different from TOS Spock. Spock always reminds me of a cat in mannerism and characterization.
In TOS he's a black cat and in SNW he's an orange cat.
I will not elaborate. Change my mind.

"These Old Scientists" was a gem of an episode and an instant top 10 of my all-time favourite episodes.
I also do have a few thoughts about it!!
So in the SNW era, red/maroon is usually for red shirts/security officers, notoriously known for dying faster than carnival goldfish. In the LWD era red shirts are for the command division, meaning that Pike the entire time probably thought that Mariner and Boimler were just red shirts.
Which is so funny to think about, these two capable command division ensigns getting mistaken for being in the worst career path of Starfleet at the time.
What also was quite fun was the constant making fun of Mariner and Boimler's constant casual and very specific references in their conversation. And Boimler's failings in keeping future events to himself through these references.
My favourite part however was when Boimler basically insinuated that comphet Spock was just a fad and that Spock and Chapel are doomed to fail. I love Ethan Peck and Jess Bush but I cannot stand Spock and Chapel together it just feels weird and wrong.
Mariner being obsessed with Nyota Uhura was also so valid, Uhura is so cool and one of my favourite characters I too would only care about her.
OOH- and the fact that Boimler called the Enterprise out on their xenophobia when talking about the Orions was so iconic. Defending his friends and their backgrounds/cultures is such a Boimler thing to do.
All in all- 10/10 episode. I have been waiting for this episode ever since it was first announced and this episode was the only reason I started to watch SNW. I was not disappointed!!

What if Bones is introduced to SNW in an episode where he's just entirely working with Chapel and he's super charming and they get along really well--and that's why Spock is so pissy with him from the beginning and Bones can't understand it because he wasn't there for the big musical number where Spock got dumped
Spock (seeing Bones and Chapel bonding over some weird medical thing): Doctor, Nurse Chapel is strictly off-limits
Bones: ...of course I would never date one of my nurses, or someone I worked with closely? What a stupid illogical unethical idea
Spock:
Tumblr media
Bones: Jim, I don't understand, why is that Vulcan mad at me, I said I wouldn't date that nurse
Jim: (trying desperately to suppress memories of the musical episode) No clue, Bones, sorry

I like Strange New Worlds but boy is their Spock behavior strange.
"taking out" the Vulcan in Spock should make his body feel off but ffs he's still Spock. I don't think they intended it this way but the way they wrote this whole scenario is like having an AfroLatina character "lose" their Latina side and suddenly not be able to make a tortilla or speak their native spanish. I mean. What?
Their whole narrative on him being human and Vulcan and showing "human" as like the fun/passionate side he's denying himself is starting to feel very anti-Vulcan, which in its own way feels super white centrist. We can go all in on the bacon scene but I'm not Jewish so more knowledgable Jewish people about the cultural *disaster* that choice was can cover the mess that is but... Yikes.
They've even done mixed race struggles better with other characters. B'Elanna in Voyager has a great arc reconciling her Klingon and human sides throughout multiple episodes and none of them imply weird shit like this. They all encourage her to accept herself where's she's at, no matter how much Klingon or human "percentage" that means. It just means both.
And in all fairness, B'Elanna's portrayal is in no way perfect but its better than *this*.
Someone on Twitter said this would've been a much more impactful episode if Spock spent all of it fearing he'd lose all connection to his Vulcan side, only to realize that (like his human adopted sister!!) He is still a child of Vulcan regardless of his geneology/biological makeup. But nah. This. *Bacon*.
After such a strong story about hope, augments, refugees, and prejudice a few episodes ago we get this? Shenanigans.
