It's not a simple effort, but fortunately, there are dozens of little garden ideas that make it possible to grow a lot of edible herbs and vegetables in a small area. The right plants, the layout, the sun, the soil, watering methods, etc. are just a few of the variables that affect success. Additionally, you might try shade gardening and install a canopy over the shaded area of your little garden. Read More

Gardening tip of the day -
When you have limited space, time and/or energy to invest in your garden it's important to think about growing high reward produce.
Think about not just the food you enjoy, but the most costly food you buy. As fun as it is to have a garden with things like zucchini, black beans or onions, they're typically fairly affordable and available year round.
But organic raspberries? Asian pears? French green beans? Heirloom tomatoes? You're going to pay a lot more for food like that.
So when planning what to plant take the time to assess what is worthy of the time and space to grow it yourself instead of just picking it from the store or market.
Not to say you can't grow the cheaper more affordable produce, and there is reward in growing any vegetable but when time and space is limited its important to think about high reward produce.

Hello and Good Day everyone!
I hope everyone has been well and has been able to work in their garden or towards any of their sustainable, self-sufficient or homestead journey this week :)
We've started getting what might be monsoon weather coming in. (Mostly just wind though. Some dirt. No rain though :'( )
The carrots I left to grow seed did some toppling.
Tumblr media
They were about 5+ ft tall (almost as tall as me!). Kind looks like someone sat down in between 'em and pushed em over lol
I've done a bit of doctoring to raise them up a bit. But not everyone was save-able. I knew a few weren't gonna make it, so i Figured I'd take the opportunity to show different stages of carrot flowers real close :)
Tumblr media
This is one of the unfortunate carrots I couldn't save. I was working on propping and heard it snap in the soil.
Tumblr media
Check out that fat taproot! My soils isn't too deep (pipe concerns.) So I'm pretty sure it woulda been fine if the soil was deeper. I plan on cutting this open to show the different inner parts later :) I will not be eating this carrot, but instead will be giving it to my chickens.
Tumblr media
This is the stem, it was about an inch round and at full height was about 4 ft tall.
The circled part I believe is called an intercalary node, the link below has more in depth info if you are curious and want to look up or know more :)
https://www.biologyonline.com/dictionary/intercalary-meristem
Tumblr media
This pic has a few different flowering stages.
Some quick info,
A carrot flower is called an umbel and is a type of compound flower.
Each flower on the tip of the umbrella shaped structure has 5 petals and are white in color. (Thes petals fall off when they begin developing seeds)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The kinda scraggly looking umbell in the center is losing its flower petals and seed is starting to come in! 🥳 as seed develops id suggest getting some organza bags or similar to keep them from falling to the ground. I still need to get some myself.
They, to me don't have much scent but are very pretty! And the variety of pollinators in the area love them.
Tumblr media
Plenty of bees, unfortunatly I haven't been able to catch pics of the butterflies yet!
Tumblr media
And flies! I had to look it up but flies are pollinators species. Guess no fly traps in the garden for now.
And one last pic for today, this one's not a carrot but chard! I've not yet seen chard go to seed so this will be a fun learning experience :)
Tumblr media
Definitely bolting action going on.
Bolting is when the weather changes too fast (usually seen when it gets too hot) and the plant panics and tries to seed as fast as it can.
I'll be keeping and eye on it and posting as it changes :)
That's it for now everyone, I hope you all ahve an amazing weekend!
🌱🥕Happy Seed saving! 🥕🌱

Hey y'all! Its been a while. I said I would start back blogging and I'm here back on the saddle. Check it out! Show it some love! Share and comment. Thanks y'all!
To start seeds like a pro, you’ll need quality soil, containers, and proper care. Use a good seed starting mix (for recipe see below), provide consistent moisture, and maintain a warm environment. Ensure adequate light, either natural or artificial, and transplant seedlings to larger containers as they grow. Remember not to overwater and follow specific seed packet instructions for each plant…

Urban or small space gardening tip -
The more produce you can grow up the better spacing you can get. Things like tomatoes do extremely well trellises up instead of wide cages so you can get twice as many plants in the same Sq footage.
Tumblr media
Making sure your tomatoes are indeterminate variety so they grow tall, they can easily grow over 6 feet tall and produce as much or more as tomatoes kept in cages. Just use twine or garden velvo to attach the plant as it grows, and remove the suckers or shoots so it doesn't grow out but up instead.

Sweet potato eating update!
Tumblr media
Beautiful leaves!
From what i could find it's suggested to blanch them before eating to reduce bitterness of the plant so I did.
Blanching for those who don't know what Blanching is~ blanching is just scalding vegetables in boiling water or steam for a short time. Typically followed by quick, thorough cooling in very cold or ice water.
Usually you can tell an items blanched (such as green beans) as they'll usually turn a vibrant soft color within a few seconds.
Tumblr media
Blanching the stems
Tumblr media
Blanched the leaves and small stems.
I forgot to take a pic of the end product, but I took them and fried them up with a little butter, black pepper, chopped garlic and onion powder (too lazy to chop an onion) and went to town!
The main stems were woody so I didnt like those very much, but the small stems and leaves were excellent. They did taste very similar to spinich! I think next time I'll pick, defoilage and toss the main stems to the girls and keep the leaves & tender peices for us.
Taste? Similar to spinich, not as bitter as expected from reviews (but I like spinich and kale)
Would I continue growing them? Yes
Why? It's hard to get spinich to grow in my climate/area. Even if they don't produce tubers, I'd be happy to supplement with the leaves/stems instead and can likely accommodate quite well in pots or deep raised beds with trellis for upright growing. Especially as they were among the few things to survive the regular 100+*f days we've been having.
That's it for today 😊
🌱🍠Happy homesteading and sustainable journeys! 🍠🌱

People love to tell Midwesterners they can't grow certain fruits.
Some fruits like blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries just love acidic soil, and certain states don't really offer that. If you live in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, or the like- Don't get discouraged. Just modify your soil with peat, etc.
This is the time to collect up your leaves and tuck them away in a corner of the yard or a compost area so you can add them to your growing fruits next spring!
