hello! im looking into buying pigeons as pets, I have experience with keeping pet birds but I want to get more specific knowledge on pigeons, how would you house them and what social grouping is best for them? and is it best to get younger pigeons if you want them to be more tame?

Pigeons require that you forget pretty much everything you know about any other species of pet bird.

The only thing they have in common is feathers and hollow bones.

Physical needs are dirt simple to meet.

Pigeons are strict granivores. 

They are not capable of digesting anything other than embryonic plant issue.

Once the plant sprouts, they can no longer process it.

So no sprouts, no fruit, no veggies, no leaves, no roots, no stems, no tubers, NOTHING BUT SEEDS!!!!

They do not have the internal organs required to process cellulose.

I’m really sorry to hammer it in like that, but so many people going from pretty much any other species of bird to pigeons make really dangerous mistakes by using the nutritional and habitat rules for their other birds as the base line.

Even vets do this more often than not, because every one’s base line for Companion bird is parrot.

SO many people advocate that pigeons be forced to eat fruits and veggies as if they were parrots.

Their owners, who trust this wide spread misinformation and are only doing what their vet tells them, end up worried that their pigeons are not getting the right blend of nutrients when they refuse those things that are NOT food for them. 

To make the birds eat “enough” veggies, their owners are advised to restrict their seed intake, because “seeds should just be treats for birds, not a dietary staple, or they’ll die of fatty liver disease.”

In the specific cases of Pigeons (Columba livia) and Ringneck Doves (Streptopelia risoria), the poor birds are accidentally starved on a full stomach by people who “Have bird experience” and are genuinely doing their best to take the best care of their pigeon, going by what they already know from other species, encouraged by the advice of their vet.

Please, do not do this to your Columbidae.

Give them a wide variety of seeds, black oil sunflower sized or smaller, that include grains and legumes. 

Dried split green peas and lentils are good legumes to supplement a widely varied seed mix.

Unpopped popping corn is a pleasant treat for many.

Safflower seeds are irresistible training treats to most.

The columbidae do not hull their seeds. They swallow them whole, shell and all, and are dependent on the shells for dietary fiber.

So avoid hulled blends advertised as “mess free.”

Pretty much all commercially available cage for birds are built to display sitting parrots, or contain a little flock of finches.

Pigeons are primarily ground foragers that are not physically capable of climbing, but nest on cliffs.

They need more floor space than height, and flat perches because round ones hurt their feet.

Perches need to have at least a full body length between them, so if there is not space for that, only have one perch in the enclosure.

A training crate for a Labrador sized dog is plenty of space for most breeds of average (about homer) size or smaller.

Larger, taller, or longer winged breeds like Giant Homers, Utility Kings, Voorburg Shield Croppers, Frillbacks, Lagore, and a few others will need a kennel built for Great Danes

The perches in the photo above are modified Garden Stakes (Nearly always square and wooden) cut to legth.

The nest boxes are bunny/ferret corner litter boxes filled with straw.

If you are planning to have a few as pets, rather than a breeding loft, they do best if you think of caging like you would crating a dog:

The crate is not intended to be where the dog lives full time.

It’s where the dog sleeps or waits out the time you are away or otherwise unavailable to supervise out time; while they are still learning the house rules.

When you are home, the dog is let out, and you alternately praise or reprimand them depending on how they interact with your things.

The end goal is for the dog to free roam the house full time, knowing what they are not allowed to mess with, what they are allowed to interact with, and how they are allowed to interact with the things they are allowed to interact with.

Pigeons are exactly as capable of learning house rules, and can get to a point where they are trust worthy free roaming either full time, or during the day.

It’s useful to think of free roam training like you would with a dog or cat, but pigeons have the intelligence of a five year old human child, and a social structure that legitimately can be called a society and is strikingly similar to a close knit extended family of humans.

Pigeons are intensely social. 

They don’t just breed in colonies.

They live in colonies year round that forage cooperatively.

They have a crazy efficient chain of command.

It is not an exaggeration to call a pigeon flock a democratic meritocracy.

And because of that, Pigeons innately expect not just to have a voice in the social group they are part of, but to be aware of that voice being ignored.

Pigeons are incredibly vocally and behaviorally communicative.

Though there have not been pigeon specific studies done, I have noticed babies hatching with more obvious anxiety during stressful periods for the loft, so I have reason to believe that parents communicate with unhatched chicks, and unhatched chicks can communicate with eachother.

This study is the basis of a communication study I have been doing with our birds for almost two years now.

Earlier, I talked about flocks being democratic meritocracies, and how aware pigeons innately are of their vote being ignored.

The more ignored a pigeon feels, the less cooperative they are inclined to be.

But the more they understand of the world around them and how their behavior effects it, the faster they learn which of their behaviors effect what and how to change their behavior to effect changes they want.

By verbally talking them through everything in the simple, clear way that you would for a toddler who has not yet picked up many words for things, you can teach a pigeon to understand your verbal communication.

With a bit of patience, you can also forge those associations using written words. Pigeons have proven capable of learning the difference between acronyms and actual words.

Building a trusting relationship with a pigeon is more like adopting a tiny, nonverbal human toddler who can fly than training any other type of domestic pet.

It’s easier for a younger bird to learn than an adult, because a younger bird has less ingrained behaviors that they need your help to unlearn, but with patience, any pigeon of any age can build a close relationship with you on the dual basis of trust and communication.

LAYER ONE : THE OUTSIDE

NAME -   fiona borgia vandenheuvel goode

EYE COLOUR -   vivid hazel although her gaze visibly darkens when she’s angry

HAIR STYLE / COLOUR -   like her father before her fiona has golden blonde hair, a family genetic trait that seemed to almost skip her daughter. fiona personally hates it when her hair is too long and has never had it any longer than at shoulder length. naturally straight with the odd curls at the tips, the supreme likes to keep a classic look that is just hers, with hair cascading down in gentle waves framing her face, but with a modern air to it. eventually, when she begins to lose her hair, fiona takes on wearing wigs ( high quality ones that try to mimic what her hair was like but just won’t curl right ) and headwraps sometimes

HEIGHT -   5ft 8 / 1,73m,  that tall and still refusing to wear heels that are smaller than 5 inch

CLOTHING STYLE -  black, copious amounts of it. it is not just because she is a widow, she has been fond of the colour ever since she was a teen and not only she finds it classy and charming, it also helps that it gives her an even more threatening and severe look. the cut is flattering, hugging her curves pleasantly but not too much as she’d rather take a classy look than a sexy one anytime. in the odd occasion that she wears other colours, she goes straight to red - vivid blood red or the dark crimson piece she loves so much. she's never wearing cheap stuff - hell, even her sleepwear is from chanel - because fiona loves fancy things, always has && will not hesitate to spoil herself buying them. overall she is stylish, even if she hardly ever leaves her comfort zone and drops the classics that are her favourites , like chanel and prada.

BEST PHYSICAL FEATURE -    to me, it’s her jawline (she’s got a jawline for days - beautiful), but if you were to ask her she’d probably say it’s her legs. they are long, smooth and give her a lean look && while she knows there’s nothing particularly special about them fiona has learnt to use her legs in a way that could easily rival marlene dietrich.

LAYER TWO : THE INSIDE

FEARS -   her own death, losing cordelia for good, lack of power, not being loved, being lonely,witch hunters

GUILTY PLEASURE - oh boy, i could say so many things here - sex, alcohol, manipulating people - but let’s be honest she’s not feeling guilty about any of these, they’re just plain pleasures for her. so i’m going with the REAL deal here: crispy spicy fried chicken ! i kid you not ! catch fiona smuggling into the academy some kfc in the middle of the night after she’s done some shit like killing a student or digging up a racist psycho, that is all the comfort food she needs.

BIGGEST PET PEEVE - lack of respect, insubordination and incompetence, seriously...the quickest way to get her to turn your brain into scrambled eggs is by doing any of these. she will not have it.

AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE - tbh it really depends on the verse, it used to be becoming the supreme, then it became being powerful. i think, in the way i chose to play her, it’s keep her powers and position as supreme as she becomes immortal ; on a side track, patching up things with her daughter is one of her goals, but it never really makes it to her main ambition.

LAYER THREE : THOUGHTS

FIRST THOUGHTS UPON WAKING UP -   when she’s not waking up with a random joe or jane ( in which she wakes up like “who the hell is that? get out.”) beside her, considering the amount of alcohol she drinks, fiona usually wakes up with a hangover and a thundering headache so it’s something along the lines of “  goddamnit, close the drapes ! where's that  painkiller ?? ”

WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT MOST -   “what can i do to get what i want ?” she’s always after ways to get something for herself, manipulate people so they are useful for her

WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT BEFORE BED -   she takes a stiff drink and wishes there was someone to hold her - wishing that she truly had someone there for her, because at the end of the day, after parties and fancy meetings, that’s exactly what fiona is: alone and lonely.

WHAT YOUR BEST QUALITY IS -   she gets shit done, just goes for it with heart and soul - oh, wait...she doesn’t have one...well, semantics aside, she really applies 100% of herself to whatever she does. that dedication extends to her love life too. she might not be the most romantic person around and will try and manipulate things into her favour but if she really likes you she will do everything in her power to make it clear that you matter and that she cares about you.

LAYER FOUR : WHAT’S BETTER ?

SINGLE OR GROUP DATES - she does well in parties and places full of people, she’s extroverted and can be oh so charming and sweet when she wants to, but she’d prefer single dates if she’s serious - especially in the beginning - as they are more private and intimate. once she feels confident that this relationship might work, she’ll be happy enough to show you off to pretty much everybody she knows ( and take the opportunity to claim you as her own, as a way to mark her territory because she sucks at sharing )

TO BE LOVED OR RESPECTED -   love never got her that far, respect is fickle so it’s neither, she’d rather be feared. the respect would come after this.

BEAUTY OR BRAINS -   brains, always, what’s the point of looking good and being a total idiot ? she values beauty (in herself and in others) but nothing compares to a cunning mind.

DOGS OR CATS - it might come as a surprise, given her own feline nature, but fiona loves dogs and always wanted to have one but...well, she doesn’t want to clean up after them && have all the responsibility that comes with having one so...she’d rather not have them to save herself from the headache.

LIE -   it might be surprising how much she tells the truth to be honest ? fiona is a truth teller, as crass and mean as that truth might come out, by default except when she lies, a shame is: she has to lie way too often.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF - oh, she’ll make it seem like she’s THE shit, like she knows everything and that YOU need her... but does that meet her own standards ? no. she despises false modesty ( fiona knows she’s smart and powerful, no denying on her vain nature ) but she is, deep down, a little insecure

What size of family would you choose if money were no object? (In regards to kids and also in regards to extended or found family living together.)

Oof.  This one breaks my heart a little.  I’ve always wanted a bunch of kids; like, 6-8.  While I’ve accepted that it can’t happen, I’m kind of glad I’m at an age where my friends are mostly done having the kids they’re going to have so I don’t have to grit my teeth a little with every announcement.  Not that I was ever not happy for them, but I did always wish it were also me.

I’d also be more than delighted to have my mother living with me - Mrs. WTF’s mother too, really, if she wanted (uh, Mrs. WTF is obviously the only person I want to do all this with; I always assumed I’d be single for life because there’s only one other person I can have this much contact with and not start to twitch, and she’s straight.  The fact that I found someone I actually like being around this much was most unexpected, though not unwelcome, but if our relationship ends due to circumstances other than my death, I’ll likely remain single.)  Assuming Mrs. WTF were on board with this, I’d also love to have my friend (the aforementioned only other person I can tolerate in large and extended doses) and her mother join us.  

If you could have any pets and all the supplies to properly take care of them, how many would you choose and what kind(s)?

I’m assuming supplies includes space when I answer this, but:

- SO MANY AQUARIUMS.  Salt and fresh.  I’d love a massive reef tank capable of housing my dream fish - since those include powder blue and yellow tangs, 125 gallons minimum.  I haven’t really considered what nems and corals I’d want specifically, but fishwise I’d want a yellow-headed jawfish as well, and percula clowns - I know they’re considered kind of basic, but they were my favorite animal when I was a little kid and I still love them.  

But I’d also want separate tanks to keep a yellow boxfish (juuuuust in case one freaked out and poisoned everyone), a Mandarin goby (they can be fussy, and also assholes) and a porcupine puffer.  And then a shitton of freshwater tanks that I won’t even get into because you’re already bored.  

- Axolotls (why would anyone NOT want a baby alien in their home?)

- A giant day gecko (have you SEEN THESE??  cutest ever.)

- A crested gecko (my nephew is one and I love him so much)

- A Mexican black kingsnake (a lot of character in smol noodle form)

- A green-cheeked conure (I prefer sun conures - so sassy - but those little fuckers are next-level loud)

- Cockatiels (such sweet little babies!)

- I currently have exotic shorthairs and I never want to be without one.

- A Cornish Rex (so sweet and so soft!)

- A sphynx kitty (they are SO RIDICULOUS and I love them.)

- A Bengal or Savannah cat for Mrs. WTF 

- There are many breeds of dog I’d love to have but my first choice would be a pit bull, assuming I could find one known to be good with cats.  

- I’d love to have a horse again, but at the same time I don’t know if I could bring myself to get one knowing that I’d never be able to love them as much as the one I had before.

- I think Mrs. WTF wants a pygmy goat.  

- I love hedgehogs, rats, guinea pigs and lowkey want a Flemish giant bunny, but given that I just named four cat breeds, those all might not be great ideas.  And I would love larger lizards, but my faves - tegus - aren’t really safe with smaller animals around, and iguanas are really hard to care for properly to the point where even if I had all the proper equipment I’d be afraid to risk it.  Ditto veiled chameleons - I adore them, but they’re so fragile.  I’d really love a Congo African Grey or a caique, but I’m not sure I’d have the time/energy to give them the attention they need to be happy.  Tiels and conures are a little less in need of having attention directly on them around the clock.  

- They’re not legal to have as pets, but if someone found a way to get me an elephant shrew, I’d be all over that.  Or a capybara.  

In other words, yes I would be perfectly fine if my days consisted of nothing but cleaning up animal crap as long as I got to live in a zoo.  That said, I would not want all of these AT THE SAME TIME.  

RWBY Animators Spotlight # 5: Asha Bishi & Kim Newman

So far in previous Spotlight posts, quite a bit of time has been spent touching on certain animators that have been part of RWBY’s production since the first couple of volumes. And though I’ve referred to a handful of newer names in the web-series’s production, there are more who have become more involved that also deserve a mention. This post will be dedicated to two of those animators, one who joined the production in volume 3 and the other who joined in volume 4.

Asha Bishi

I said before that Volume 3′s production had arguably as big on an overhaul as volume 4. And while that’s true, let’s not dismiss what changes occurred in the latter. Whereas the third volume’s production underwent changes in terms of establishing and adjusting phases, teams, and positions, much of the changes during volume 4 were in terms of the animation process itself. Contrary to what some might think, Rooster Teeth had always used Autodesk Maya, albeit for just modeling characters at first. But volume 4 was when Maya replaced Poser Pro as the main tool for animation. As a result, various assets had to be rebuilt from scratch and new plug-ins and approaches to using the software were considered. This led to a challenge for the animation team, especially with the schedule cutting things close between RTX 2016 and the volume 4 premiere on October 22nd of the same year. But veteran animators and newcomers for volume 4 had tackled those challenges.  Asha Bishi, a newcomer during volume 4, would be among them.

Like any animator who starts small when involved in the show, Asha’s first scene in volume 4 was one of team RNJR’s various trekking scenes in chapter 2, where they talk about Shion village and Jaune’s trips with his family. This scene, as faint as it is, is where her way of animating in the show can be identified. Asha usually makes character animations feel snappy yet lively through facial expressions or body language while still maintaining who the character is, as seen in the way Jaune’s eyes embarrassingly shift around in her scene. 

Eventually, her snappy way of animating dialogue-oriented scenes would prove to compliment the fight scenes she would be assigned with. One of her first bits of action-oriented animation were Ren and Nora’s successfully-cathartic attempt at pinning down and killing off the Nuckelavee. What sticks out in her shots the most is the way Ren indifferently yanks his father’s dagger off of the Grimm’s flank as he walks towards and defiantly deals with the Nuckelavee’s sudden attempt to intimidate him. We would then start to see Asha’s skills at animating fight scenes develop further within the volume 5 character shorts, namely Weiss’s. Some have referred to Weiss’s way of fighting in her character short as more of dancing than fighting. Whether or not that’s ultimately meant as a compliment or a criticism, some of those moments are simply due to Asha applying her forte; snappy character acting. The way Weiss swiftly unleashes fire dust, lunges at the beowulves and decapitates a couple of them with twirls and a sense of grace but cockiness are all intentional.

Now I bring up the matter of how Asha does character acting in both dialogue and action scenes, but there is one character who probably brings the most in her style, and that’s Blake Belladonna. But how exactly does a character as serious and emotionally withdrawn as Blake bring the most in Asha’s animations?

The moment where Blake ditches her bow has been widely deemed as a positive note for Blake’s character within RWBY’s fandom. But believe it or not, it’s also been a great moment within the animation team, and it’s not hard to see why. With faunus characters, what could’ve been misinterpreted as certain characters having ears and tails as prop, can now be seen as genuinely-nuanced behavioral traits. Blake as a result has been able to communicate more openly with her ears and thus adds a range of emotion and secondary action animation. Believe it or not, much of how Blake and her mom, Kali’s ears move are generally reflective of how a real cat’s ears would shift depending on their mood. 

Now, none of this is to say that Asha is the only animator who does this, but you’ll definitely see a difference in some scenes in volumes 4 and 5 where Blake barely moves her ears at all and scenes where she moves them a lot. When Blake’s ears are expressed lively, there’s a good chance Asha did it. Besides Blake and Kali, this also extends to other characters, faunus or not, like Sun and his tail (these are the actual shots she did), Sienna’s ears and Weiss’s ponytail. Of course, she still animates well-emoted scenes for other characters in-between, such as Yang and Weiss’s reunion.

There are two Japanese animators Asha Bishi can be compared to when it comes to the way she animates, Hirotoshi Takaya and Akira Hamaguchi. The former has utilized a swift way to express character movement in various anime projects since the 90s. Some of the works Takaya has animated for include the Magical girl anime Mysterious Thief Saint Tail (a TV series that fell into obscurity in anime compared to other shows of the same genre), the Shonen anime Kekkaishi, and the TV anime adaptation of the Japanese role-playing game, Tales of the Abyss. The latter animator I referred to, Akira Hamaguchi, often sprinkles a bit of frame modulation in his works, meaning he will go from animating on 1s to animating in 2s or 3s or vice-versa. Between that and his character animations having a sometimes swiftly and bouncy feel, Hamaguchi’s scenes have their own sense of liveliness to them.

Kim Newman

A couple of times before, I briefly teased mentioning about a certain animator gaining a lot of attention. And that animator I referred to was Kim Newman. Kim has developed a positive reputation within the fandom during the middle of volume 5′s run for very specific reasons, but more on that later. For now, let’s dive into when she got her start on production of the series.

As stated before, every animator who has worked on RWBY, regardless of how good they’ve gotten in the eyes of the fandom, had to get their start on smaller scenes somewhere and Kim Newman was no exception. During her first few weeks working at Rooster Teeth during the production of volume 3, she provided bits-and-pieces of both the Team JNPR vs Team BRNZ fight and the Team SSSN vs Team NDGO fight, with her very first animations being Nora showing off her semblance for the first time, Sage and Dew clashing, Gwen’s knives dropping on Scarlet and Sun’s drop-kick on Octavia. Judging by these shots alone, one probably wouldn’t easily tell this was Kim, given how back then most animators who had been working on the show up to that point were getting their sea legs with constructing full-fledged fights. but small signs of her approach to animating scenes can be seen, such as how the camera distorts a bit when Gwen’s knives fall toward Scarlet.

By the latter-half of volume 3, another side of Kim Newman’s animations would be seen through facial expressions. The first noteworthy example is Team RWBY in their dorm room in chapter 8, where not only do we see how she’s just as capable at character acting, but that she manages to sell Yang’s expressions through the first actual tears in the show. Not just comedic tears done in compositing or characters wiping their eyes with their hands to fake the gesture, but rather real tears. And this would be far from the last scene of that sort she’s done. Two other scenes she’s done that were even more emotional involved Ruby... witnessing both Penny and Pyrrha’s deaths. Yeah, these kinds of things she’s insisted on volunteering for, going as far as adding tears for Ruby’s reaction in the former scene when they weren’t even in the storyboards or animatic. Though what’s really worth noting is how she captures the expressions and gestures in both scenes at making Ruby feel helpless while making other characters like Pyrrha feel briefly content in her final moments before being struck. Also, fun fact: Kim had a replica of Pyrrha’s crown on her desk when animating the scene... okay, well, maybe not necessarily a fun fact. But this is all to point out how dedicated she was to mo-capping and animating her favorite character

The scenes Kim Newman animated throughout volume 3 would prove to be an signs of things to come in volumes 4 & 5 as her skills would not only improve, but she will also develop traits in her style that can be best described in one word: ‘intense’. From here on, the way she animated how fast and hard characters attacked and weapons and fists were swung would be more refined. She would also more often angle and/or distort the camera in a manner that winds up adding a sense of dynamism that would be seen among certain animators in anime. I said in part 3 of the this Spotlight series how Dillon Gu used the camera to apply a sense of speed for the character. For comparison-sake, if Dillon used the camera to help show how fast the character was going, then Kim used the camera to apply the sense of distance, to display how far one character was from the other they faced depending on the setting. This is made most evident in shots like Blake being flung to the sky  above the Water Dragon Grimm, Ruby dodging the reach of the Nuckelavee Grimm, Yang standing ground against the Ursa, and Weiss summoning her knight against the lancer.

Kim still just as much strengthened the use of the camera in her scenes as she has character acting, where strong emotions are applied both during and outside of fight scenes. Though not as gut-wrenching as the stuff she’s done in volume 3, she still couldn’t help but find herself still working on scenes where characters are emotionally crying such as with Ruby and Yang’s reunion and Yang and Raven’s verbal confrontation, the latter of which she mo-capped and animated alongside another animator, Melanie Stern. And in the case of fight scenes themselves, she makes sure to communicate to the viewer moments where a character is feeling shocked, alarmed, angry, focused or in Tyrian’s case, playful. One of the best examples of this is in chapter 10 of volume 5. When fans think of that chapter and Kim Newman in terms of fights, they think specifically of the fact Sun is using his “gun-chucks” mode for the first time in a while. And while that moment was great to watch in it’s own right, it’s her part in Blake and Ilia’s fight that arguably better captures use of intensity described earlier. Not only does it fit the setting of the inside of Blake’s being set on fire as a visual metaphor for the heat of battle, but it even effectively compliments the fueled, angered voice acting done by Cherami Leigh as Ilia, a character that served as the biggest departure of all the roles she’s voiced in anime and video games.

I mentioned earlier that Kim gained a reputation within the fandom for certain reasons during volume 5 and when I say that, I’m referring to her position. Since volume 3, Joel Mann and Dustin Matthews have most consistently been credited as the lead of the animation team. By chapter 10 of volume 5, Kim Newman was officially promoted to Assistant Lead Animator. Though she wasn’t the first to be credited for this position (that honor goes to Paula Decanini during volume 4 who is now the director of RWBY Chibi season 3), it’s this role where Kim managed to help lead the team of animators who were brought on board during volume 5. Animators like Erika Soosaar, Jason Dickol and John Yang (or “NWBY” as she aptly put it) have in response expressed enjoying their experience working with her.

So with all of this mentioning about her skills and position in the web-series, what Japanese animators could her style even be compared to. Some may by default compare her to Yutaka Nakamura or Norio Matsumoto since they have done some of the most popular fight scenes in very widely-known anime. But the comparison can be considered unfair as both animators have had 30 years of animation industry experience under their belts whereas Kim has only had a few. Plus the comparisons can be seen as too obvious and broad. One could argue that since she’s gone on record that her passion for animation was inspired by the Shonen boxing anime, Hajime no Ippo, then she could be compared to say, animator Yoshiyuki Ito, who did certain scenes in the series and has done character designs for various Studio Bones titles like the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist series, Soul Eater, Star Driver, Space Dandy, Concrete Revolutio, and the spring 2018 anime, Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan.

Though a more appropriate choice, the two animators that Kim Newman can be best compared to in my eyes are that of Aito Ohashi and Takahiro Shikama. With the former, Ohashi has been fairly new to the anime industry, having made a presence in the more recent Pokemon XY and Sun & Moon series and Gundam Build Fighters with angled cameras and swift animation to give a feel of how fast and how far characters are moving about in a given setting. So that’s the comparison to Ohashi. But what about Shikama? Having animated scenes for anime like Kurokami, Star Driver, Sacred Seven, & most recently, Darling in the Franxx, Shikama has a way of timing punches and kicks to either be thrown or hit hard and fast. Every hit and sword strike capture great force, combined with fierce facial expressions.

Living alone was always a tad bit uncomfortable for Gabriel.

When your four of four, then four of untold thousands...loneliness isn’t something one encounters too much.

But once he left, he’d gotten his first real taste of it.

He’d tried to make things to fill the void.

Those hadn’t turned out too well.

Being the Trickster had its drawbacks, after all.

So, the next time he made a companion, he decided to make it smaller and, you know, less capable of destruction.

And this last time, he had simply found a companion.

The dark brown and white Jack Russell terrier had just appeared one night after he’d finished giving an abusive step-dad his just desserts.

“Hey there! You lost, little buddy?” The dog approaches closer, little tail wiggling behind him. “No? No owner?” Gabriel had knelt down, scritching the dog’s ears. They’d been rarely separated since then. Except he had given him to an old Asgardian friend who was lying low in Tahiti just after the Winchesters figured out he wasn’t a Trickster but more angelic in nature.

Once he’d managed to get out of the clutches of nefarious, douchey Colonel Sanders, he found that he ached for companionship. Especially after being deprived of it for so long.

Cas was okay - certainly more helpful and understanding than the Winchesters, who he had to at least admit, were showing their versions of restrained kindness.

But it wasn’t what he needed.

“Guys?” Gabriel enters the room without his usual swagger, his grace and vessel still healing from his imprisonment. His brother and the Winchesters all look up from their books and laptops, Dean stealing himself for whatever was going to come out of his mouth. “I’d like a pet.” Dad, it felt humiliating to ask.

“No,” Dean says firmly, closing his laptop.

“Dean, just hear him out.” Sam taps his forefinger against the page he was reading a few times as he gages Gabriel’s demeanor.

“Nope. No. No dogs in Baby or the Bunker. I’m allergic to cats, so definitely no there. And none of his Trickster conjuring up animals with a want to maul me crap either.”

“You liked The Colonel,” Sam argues, giving Dean a look. “He was a good dog.”

“That was different!”

“You let him ride in Baby.”

“That was different, Sam, and you know it.”

“Dean - give him this. He’s still an archangel who has been through a lot. He’s not asking for anything impossible or weird. So, let Gabriel have a dog.”

“I will assist in keeping it from you and cleaning up after it if necessary.” Cas offers as a small ray of hope crosses through Gabriel’s eyes.

“Jesus - all of you, really?” He gives a heavy sigh, standing. “It doesn’t go in my room or in my kitchen. And I don’t want to see it stealing shoes or whatever and chewing on everything, understand?” All three men nod eagerly before Dean leaves the room with a huff. Sam pulled his laptop closer.

“Let’s look at the local rescue first.” Sam waves Gabriel closer, letting him take a seat before setting the laptop in front of him. “These are in Kansas City since we don’t have a rescue in Lebanon. But I’m sure Cas can get you there in no time.” Sam is trying to rein in his enthusiasm as Gabe scrolled.

“This one.” Gabe tapped the screen. “I wanna see this one.” Cas looked over Gabriel’s shoulder at the photo.

“Let’s go then.” Cas waits until Gabriel rises, a little stiffly, before clapping a hand on his shoulder.

“Wait!” Sam calls before they fly away. “I’ll run into town and get some dog food and training snacks.”

“Thanks, Sammich.” And they were off.

Less than an hour’s worth of paperwork, meeting her - watching her light brown eyes light up and her tail give a few contained wags as she trotted towards Gabriel was the highlight of his day - and going through her basic commands she had learned.

And after some heavy petting and baby talk, they were off.

Sam is nearly vibrating with contained happiness when he hears the flutter of wings.

Gabriel comes around the corner with the dog on a thin purple leash, her tail wagging softly as she sniffs the floor.

“Sam, meet Piccadilly.”

“Hey, girl.” Sam kneels, his hand extended as she approaches warily, stopping to look at Gabriel who joins her and reassures her with a few soft pats before she eases up to Sam’s hand, giving it a lick before allowing him to pet her.

“She’s a sweetheart, huh?”

“Oh, yeah. She’s a good girl too. Aren’t you?” His voice changes as he tells her what a good girl she was, causing Dean to smile from the doorway.

“Dean, this is Piccadilly.” Dean keeps his arm crossed over his chest but keeps the soft smile on his face for Gabriel.

“No peeing or chewing on my things, sweetheart.” She wiggles her way towards Dean, giving his boots and legs a good sniff before waggling her way to Cas for a few licks at his fingers until he scratched behind her ears before lopping over to Gabriel with her tongue lolling out of her mouth.

“Good girl.”

After sniffing every room - except Dean’s room, the kitchen and the garage - eating, going for walkies, and running through her commands again, Gabriel led her to his designated bedroom to rest.

“Been a busy day, Dilly girl, huh?” She gives a hearty tail wag, watching Gabriel recline on the bed before he slapped the bed. “Come on. You don’t have to sleep on a concrete floor anymore.” She hesitates for only a moment before jumping onto the bed beside him, giving him a few slobbery kisses before setting her head on his hip, Gabriel’s hand running over her head a few times before switching to rubbing her exposed ear and scritching down her back a little before repeating all the movements.

“Thanks, Dilly girl.” He whispered to her sleeping form before nodding off for a bit himself.

“He seemed to perk up already.” Sam remarks to Dean in the kitchen, pulling a pair of beers from the fridge.

“Seems like a good-mannered dog. So long as you all remember the rules.”

“I have communicated to her that you don’t want her in those areas.” Castiel voiced as he took a seat at the table across from Dean.

“Thanks for that.”

“You should be thankful it’s not something he created initially.”

“Like what?” Sam laughs out before taking a pull of his beer.

“He created the platypus. And the skunk. I believe he also created the jackalope as well.” Sam and Dean are giving him identical looks of disbelief.

“You gotta be shitting me.”

“Now, Dean, aren’t you glad you agreed to a dog?”

“Shut up, Sammy.”
