Mekosuchus
My recent-most Wikipedia deep dive was in equal parts enlightening and frustrating and it concerned no other than Mekosuchus, everyones favourite heartbreaker of a recently extinct crocodile.
For those unfamiliar, let me give you some footnotes before getting into the nitty gritty. Mekosuchus is, or was, a genus of terrestrial (NOT ARBOREAL) dwarf crocodile from Australasia, first appearing during the Late Oligocene. They were small, how small we don't precisely know but its generally estimated that adults would be in the 1-2 meter range (so about 3 to 6 feet I believe?). The heartbreaking part? The last confirmed Mekosuchus died out only 3.000 years ago, and some publications even suggest they could have stuck around until just 1.700 years ago. Yeah, we got REALLY close.

But lets get some of the basics out of the way. Mekosuchus was a small mekosuchine crocodilian and currently, four species are recognized. Mekosuchus whitehunterensis is the oldest from the Oligocene/Miocene of mainland Australia, immediately succeeded by M. sanderi during the Miocene. Both these species were described as having had blade-like posterior teeth (at the back of the jaw) and both coexisted with a ton of other crocs, including Baru, Quinkana and some bizarre ones like Ultrastenos.
After a bizarre break in the fossil record, Mekosuchus shows up again during the Holocene on the islands of New Caledonia and Vanuatu, ironically mirroring the meiolaniid turtles I talked about previously. Fossils are securely dated to about 3.000 years ago, but Balouet and Buffetaut also suggested that some of the younger remains may only be 1.720 years old, overlapping with human settlements. But this isn't accepted by everyone. Regardless, these species differ from their older cousins by lacking the blade-like teeth, instead going for crushing dentition.

With such different teeth comes different ecology, of course. A 2015 study suggests that the neck vertebrae of M. whitehunterensis were well adapted to rapid stresses, specifically caused by side-to-side movement of the head. It is thus speculated that they shook their heads to strip meat from carcasses, rather than performing the iconic death roll (as that might hurt the animal on land).
M. inexpectatus meanwhile was seemingly better adapted at crushing hard-shelld things, crabs, insects, maybe snails even. Holt and colleagues suggest that it might have lived much like a modern dwarf crocodile, spending its time in river streams and coming out at night to forage.

Both however are thought to be terrestrial, having short, altirostral skulls, big eyes and nares that face sideways, not upwards as in semi-aquatic crocodilians. They were however NOT ARBOREAL. Yes I know I know, its a bummer. To those unaware, a commonly cited missconception is that Mekosuchus was a tree-dweller, which was originally suggested by Paul Willis in the 1990s. However, this was more of an off-hand comment at the time that certain people (including me in the past) have run with, causing it to spread and be almost considered fact by some. Hell, it says a lot when Mekosuchus, in many circles, is thought of as "that tree croc".
However, not only was Willis suggestion based on the now outdated notion that monitor lizards weren't around at the same time, later authors also note that the toes of Mekosuchus really don't show any adaptations to climbing specifically. So alas, it would seem that this was only a myth. But don't worry too much, sometimes crocs climb regardless, just not vertically up a tree.

Now at the beginning I teased that there's a reason why my images for M. whitehunterensis and M. inexpectatus look so different. Well its kind of painful really. Despite being known for about 30 years now, with 300+ bones known from New Caledonia alone, Mekosuchus is incredibly poorly studied. The original description only figured around half a dozen bones and while the next three species were all named in the span of just 5 years, they are all incredibly fragmentary. And then, just after another expedition collected more bones....things went silent.
The last 20 years saw the publication of only a single paper extensively dealing with Mekosuchus itself, with two skull reconstructions coming out in less detailed sources.
The first is Holt et al. 2007, a powerpoint presentation from a paleontological conference. The presentation made some fascinating claims and even provided a reconstruction of the skull, but sadly. Nothing ever came of it, the research was never formally published and the lead author has since then changed fields into Astronomy. Actually had a nice talk with him earlier today.
Then there's Scanlon 2014, which offers even less. In the book Carnivores of Australia: past, present and future, Scanlon briefly touches upon mekosuchines, featuring a new composite reconstruction of M. whitehunterensis. However, this is not elaborated on in the text, despite the drastic differences to how M. inexpectatus has been reconstructed before. So we are left with two very different appearances. Are they simply really different looking species? Is one interpretation faulty? Should Mekosuchus be split? Who knows, might be a while until we figure it out. But until then, here's the two together, one looking much like a dwarf crocodilian, the other more like a sebecid. An interesting contrast for sure.
As per usual, this research was done as part of me doing a major haul of a Wikipedia page which you can read here Mekosuchus - Wikipedia. It's been an interesting, if a little frustrating task, but it was fun properly reading up on this animal and putting this information out there for people that don't wanna dig through 30 years of literature (including one paper in French).
Hopefully I suceeded, at least the page is a bit bulkier now.

pirates smp theorycrafting: the faction isles are a compass
hi! this is my first theory post ever so please bear with me, and also my first tumblr post in a very, very long time. all images are screenshots so apologies in advance for bad quality
recently, the POWCreations twitter posted a rather cryptic tweet:
this may be referring to a hidden symbol in the "fallen" portrait for guqqie, that only appears when color levels are adjusted:
i don't claim to be the first person ever to find this symbol btw! i'm fairly certain that some people must have found this already before me
so, what is the significance of this symbol, and what does it mean for pirates lore?
this symbol is an 8-pointed star, and is immediately reminiscent of a compass. it's also very interesting that the tweet refers to it as "the light".
notably, the icon for pirates smp has a compass with a gold star pointing in what would be cardinal directions, and tentacles similar to those found on the corrupted island pointing in ordinal directions.
there are four cardinal directions. you know what else there's four of? factions! the faction isles are also quite an interesting shape, with four "points" and each faction's territory located at each of the points (as well as what seems to be a large volcano in the middle). it could also be noted that in some cultures, the center/up can be considered a fifth cardinal point, which might be hinting at a secret fifth faction? idk i'm pulling that out of nowhere to be honest
if the faction isles are reminiscent of a compass, which direction is "north"? i looked a little bit into cardinal direction symbolism and associated colors, but this seems to vary with different cultures so it's difficult to pin down specific associations right now. i could theorize on this, but i fear i'd mostly be grasping at straws
one possibility is to look towards this giant statue on the island that happens to be literally pointing in a direction:
this statue of "sandro caravel", the founder of the faction isles, is supposedly pointing in the direction of treasure. it's also sort of the direction the nightingale base is pointing. does this mean that the nightingale base is "north"? possibly! idk! i do wonder what's over there, though!
something to note is that there is a hidden island not found on the map, discovered by martyn, straight out from the direction that the kestrel faction base is "pointing" (for lack of a better term). this island had a large stone altar with skulls, as well as tents and prison cells.
are there more secrets in the directions of the other factions? what does this have to do with the guys in robes, or the purple corrupted tentacles? i don't know, but i'm excited to find out :) we're still in the early days of this smp, so i'm sure there's a lot more lore and secrets to uncover!
i can't watch every single pirates stream, so if there's something that i missed or if you might have something that could add to this, please let me know

Twitter (or “X”, I guess) is currently losing its mind over a media analysis video that implies King Kong might have some racially charged (or even racist) themes. Thoughts?

But I also think King Kong (1933) has a somewhat undeserved sterling reputation in general. Even critics who have otherwise been quick to be hypercritical and dismissive of monster movies talk about King Kong as if it's a "perfect" movie, because historically King Kong has always been considered a classic. And, like, historically speaking, yes, King Kong will always be an important and groundbreaking film. It's a landmark moment in special effects.
But if you take the special effects out of it... you're not really left with much to rave about. The acting in King Kong ranges from passable to outright bad (and racist when you consider the islanders and Charlie the inexplicable Chinese Stereotype cook who exists for... comic relief? I guess?), the characters themselves are thin, the dialogue can be very good but also outright atrocious, and the camerawork (again, outside of special effects) is nothing to rave about. King Kong has a reputation for perfection that's solely hinged on cool special effects and a shitload of nostalgia. It does not have the depth to its storytelling of, say, Godzilla (1954), which had to claw and fight over decades to be reappraised by critics for its many virtues. All King Kong has is groundbreaking special effects.
And those special effects are really good, don't get me wrong. You feel for that monkey before the movie ends, and the wonder and terror of Skull Island's ecosystem of monsters is rightfully iconic. But if you dig past that - and you have to if you want to analyze the movie, because most of it is surface level stuff - you're not left with much to analyze, and what there is to analyze are a bunch of racist tropes that were old and timeworn by the time King Kong was made, and much more so now. Evil black savages who want to sacrifice a white woman because of her enchanting Aryan beauty, a giant ape who's horny for said white woman because of said enchanting Aryan beauty, heroic white men risking everything as they plunder an evil, backwards island of degenerate relics from the past that were best left forgotten, Charlie the Chinese Cook who is exactly as grating a racial stereotype of Chinese people as you'd expect from the 1930's - yeah, all of these tropes have racist roots, and whether or not the racism was intended by the creators doesn't really matter, because they certainly did nothing to try and mitigate it or divorce the tropes from those racist roots. It's a racist movie, an undeniably racist movie, which isn't something that should surprise people because it's from the 19fucking30's.
And that doesn't mean we have to condemn King Kong, and that watching it makes you a problematic Nazi MAGA chud, or that we're not allowed to praise what's good about it (i.e. the special effects). It just means that, maybe, after 90 years of completely untempered praise from all corners of the film world, maybe it's time to admit that King Kong, while still a classic, is not a perfect movie. That it has some flaws. And maybe we can start by admitting the really obvious flaw of it being a movie from the 1930's that reflects the 1930's attitudes about race which were, you know, not great, and then from there we could maybe talk about how it reflects 1930's attitudes about gender (also not great), and then to how the acting in it is mostly bad, and then to how the scriptwriting is... let's say uneven, and then maybe admit that really we just like the monster bits and the rest is kind of forgettable at best, and that Godzilla is a far superior movie in all respects.
But I think what's likely to happen is people will viciously defend the movie without thinking about it critically for a moment, because nuance and honest self reflection is for chumps.

The Island Centibyte is complete! This one I put off for a long time despite it not being technically difficult to make, because I didn't know how I wanted to approach it. Island painted pets, as they exist, tend to range from "kinda racist" to "Why Is This Still On The Website", and while I love Virtu.pet's redesign, the Centibyte project has been about trying to match the official site look for each paint brush color, so I didn't want mine to obviously stand out from the others with a different color palette.
so I ended up pulling heavily from the Island Uni visually, since that design is both iconic and one of the less bad Island pets. I deviated from the official color by trying to make the markings feel like natural patterns of spots and freckles. I've had other paint brush colors change the shape of the oval marking on the neck to match the theme (a butterfly shape for Faerie, a heart for Valentine, a skull for Pirate, etc), so I felt like a shell marking on the chest could work here. I also gave the UC one some coconuts on its tail to evoke a palm tree- left them off of the converted one though because the tail shape is different enough that I couldn't find a way to place them that felt natural, and also they kept reminding me of truck nuts so i was like Okayyy this will just be one of those pets that lost a unique little detail in conversion, lol

Propaganda for Wayne & Raj
their biggest goal in life is to be pro hockey players together (they're been on the same hockey team since they were children) but if that doesn't pan out, they plan to become beekeepers together because "they both really like syrup." they are so clinically stupid. they think cabbages are fruit. one of them eats things in his sleep and hacks it up like a cat. one of them decided the best time to come out was while falling down the side of a mountain. they think action movies are real.
Two hockey jocks who are best friends. They are smart when it comes to hockey, but not much else. Examples: they think cabbage is a fruit and that syrup comes from bees.

They're both just iconic!!! Firstly these two are inseparable.They do everything together!!! There:s so many amazing scenes with them. Wayne is a suped supportive ally of Raj and Bowies relationship.
They are besties and they are equally so, so silly. What really takes the cake here is that they both genuinely believe that all television shows and movies are real, and when they find out they’re not, they say “At least we can still trust wrestling. :)” They’re hockey players but, if that doesn’t work out for a career, they said they wanted to be beekeepers because they both like syrup. They lost their fake hockey beards and Wayne’s immediate response was, “Maybe I ate them in my sleep!!” And when he starts trying to hack them up, Raj just says, “Wayne’s good at this. :)” During a challenge, Raj lands in a pit of tapioca pudding and instantly assumes it’s vomit, meanwhile Wayne lands on an angry bull and asks, “Why is this cow so mad?! :(“ Wayne calls a skull a “head bone,” Raj calls cabbages “leafy balls.” They’re so supportive of one another and they’re always looking out for each other.
They are both so silly and stupid and they are adorable must watch the season they are in.

Robin rarely performs hands-on archaeology, so this scene is very cool to see. She gets to show off her smarts, too, by figuring out how the person died and using the hole in his skull and the ship's cargo to estimate how old the ship was.

After the moment where she states that her specialty is assassination, this is one of the first times she and Usopp become a comedy duo, and one of her first morbid comments after joining the crew.

She's just very cute here and the reading pose is #relatable

This is one of the first times she starts to realize what the Strawhats are all about, and when just being around them gives her a new lease on life, psychologically instead of literally being dragged away from death. She's not joining in the romp, but she's just happy to watch her new crew have fun, and I'm sure this was the beginnings of when she fell in love with them.

This is the first time we see Robin really vulnerable in front of her crew. This whole scene is a great moment for her character, showing the normally calm and collected woman suddenly so scared she's fallen down and frozen in fear (though not literally just yet), and it does a good job setting up her character growth in W7/EL.
Chapter 320
Related to the previous one, this is another great look at Robin's character. Here she's already willing to sacrifice herself if it means everyone else will get away, just like she tries to do in Water 7, and I suspect she attacked Aokiji to goad him into focusing on her instead of Luffy and the others.

Once again we're coming back to Robin and her newfound love for the crew. She's perfectly fine here, but according to the next chapter, it appeared to the rest of the crew that she recovered a little after Luffy, leaving the room after he did. I wonder what she was thinking about while resting - was she worried about the fact that she could no longer leave of her own free will, having become attached to them? Was she preparing to give herself over to the WG should Aokiji alert his comrades? Was she contemplating suicide in order to free the Strawhats from the perceived burden of having her as a crewmate?

This is an interesting scene. Robin is telling this to Sanji and Chopper to try to keep them away from her - she's clearly stating that she's leaving the crew, and trying to emphasize that she herself is dangerous to have around to make them stay away. But even though she loves them, it's apparent that she doesn't know them well enough yet, because this only makes them more worried about her and desperate to go after her.
Chapter 340
A continuation of the above - despite that she's trying to drive them away from her, she can't help but leave them with kind words, and thank them for everything they've done for her.
Chapter 347
She's trying so hard to play the part of the villain here, deliberately being vague with her wording to make it sound like she's sacrificing the Strawhats for her own dream when in fact it's the other way around. I'm not sure if it's because she has trouble being vulnerable with people at this point in time, or if it's because she correctly thinks that the others won't accept her actual reason.
From Chapter 359, I had to include this whole sequence because. Augh. Augh. We finally know the truth, that she loves the crew so much that even though they brought back her will to live, she's ready to die all over again just so they can keep going. She can't betray them so she can live this time - it seems like she never even considered that possibility despite doing it so many times in the past. And she just has to tell someone the truth. She might not have said anything if Iceburg hadn't accused her of being on good terms with the government, and insulted her dream. aaaaaauuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhhhhh
Chapter 370
We return to the comedy abruptly! Endlessly amusing how serious and calm she is here while Sogeking is doing goofy things with his arms for truly no reason.

Calumma benovskyi and the rafting Chameleons
I am on four levels of procrastination right now, procrastinating on Wikipedia projects I started because I procrastinated on other wikipedia projects.
Anyways, Calumma benovskyi is a species of chameleon named in 2020 on the basis of a almost completely preserved skull. This little guy is special for many things, one of which is the incredible preservation. That's practically the whole skull, mandible plus three neck vertebrae, which is incredible as chameleon fossils are RARE AS HELL.
As you can say its a pretty humble looking animal, an oval skull widest at the point where the frontal and parietal meat, narrow pointed snout, large eyes and a flat headcrest, all packaged into a rather small animal.
Calumma benovskyi is a member of the genus Calumma (shocker I know), which is still around today. Calumma contains over 40 species of varying shapes and sizes, some with decently big headcrests or elongated nose crests. Some examples include the Parson's chameleon (JialiangGao), Boettger's chameleon (pbertner), the globe-horned chameleon (Matthijs Kuijpers) and the blade chameleon (Emanuele Biggi).
However, what makes Calumma benovskyi so special compared to all of these is where it was found. The thing is, modern Calumma species are endemic to Madagascar. The genus is found nowhere else on earth. However, oddly enough Calumma benovskyi is from Kenya's Hiwegi Formation on Rusinga Island (Lake Victoria). Continental Africa. How did that happen?
The answer is simultaneously simple and complex. Obviously there must have been some faunal exchange between mainland Africa and Madagascar, chameleons make that obvious enough and there are other animal groups found on both landmasses (or at least have close relatives on both landmasses). For instance the iconic Aye-Aye of Madagascar has relatives on the mainland as recently as the Miocene. So it wouldn't be unusual to assume that chameleons could have originated on the mainland and only later traveled to Madagascar. This however competes with an older hypothesis that suggests that chameleons evolved on Madagascar and dispersed from there to the continent. So which is it?
Well Čerňanský and colleagues, who named Calumma benovskyi, agree with the African origin for several reasons. For one, the Kenyan species is the oldest known member of this genus. If its on the mainland during the Miocene then perhaps thats where they first evolved (tho this is hard to proof given the absence of fossils). Then there's the matter of phylogeny. Generally speaking, on a phylogenetic tree these guys are surrounded by groups from mainland Africa all around. There's some outliers, like the genus Brookesia that is believed to have arrived in Madagascar much earlier during the Paleocene and the big-nosed chameleon which turned out really weird. But in broad strokes it seems that the Madagascar groups branch away from African ones. Finally on a practical level one has to consider ocean currents. In the paper its argued that during the Oligocene and Miocene, when the second chameleon dispersal may have taken place, currents would have been directed away from the African coast and towards Madagascar. So if a chameleon were to sit on a branch that, through some events ended up in the ocean, it would be swept out towards the island. But a chameleon starting from Madagascar would have to go against the currents to reach Africa. Logically, it just makes more sense for them to have gone eastward. This only changed later during the Mid Miocene. And since Calumma benovskyi lived during the EARLY Miocene, before the shift in currents, it couldn't have come from the island. The conclusion seems simple. It is the oldest known Calumma species, most of the more basal groups are continental and currents at the time only go away from Africa. Case closed?
Weeeeeeeell not entirely. The phylogenetic analysis throw a few curveballs into that neat little package. For the time being I'll ignore the fact that the long-nosed chameleon was recovered as more basal than some African groups in some analysis, as the authors explain that this is likely just the results being fucked over by its weird head. The real problem instead lies with the specific position of Calumma benovskyi and the sister group to this genus. The later aspect concerns the genus Furcifer, another group primarily found on Madagascar (and some other islands that don't matter right now). Following the works of Tolley and colleagues, who also were among those suggesting an African origin, Furcifer is the sister group to Calumma and branched off from them during the Eocene. So if Calumma originated on the mainland, then so must have the last common ancestor between the two genera? Now that doesn't exactly overthrow the hypothesis of course. Both could have split on the mainland and separately arrived on Madagascar, not a big deal, just not as neat. Speaking of things that aren't as neat. Analysis shows that Calumma benovskyi is fairly derived. In simple terms, as far as we know its not the ancestor of the Madagascar chameleons but sits among them. Perhaps then there were multiple dispersal events in Calumma itself or perhaps this position is simply not correct. After all, if Calumma was around in continental Africa, then it seems likely that there was a much greater diversity of chameleons present, one we simply don't know from fossils. So perhaps further discoveries, new taxa, would help make sense of something that now just doesn't have all the pieces yet.
Whatever the case, the authors still hold on to the African origin and it does still make sense when considering age, currents and the surroundings. Hell, the species name itself is a reference to this hypothesis, tho the guy they named it after has a really dubious life history that puts Baron Münchhausen to shame. But I digress. Perhaps this is simply something that will make a lot more sense once we find out more.
To wrap things up, here's the only two serious paleoart pieces of this species I came across. The first published in the year of the animal's naming by Connor Ross/RajaHarimau98 and the later not too long ago by Joschua Knüppe. Because if there's an obscure animal chances are Joschua drew it.
