Okay I'm now home from watching the Barbie movie, so I have to bestow some knowledge upon you fuckers (aka me infodumping actual Barbie lore because there were a lot of references there).
So, first and foremost, in one scene, we see "Earring Ken" and "Growing up Skipper" (very short scene, don't worry if you missed it). But these were actual Barbie dolls released by Mattel way back whenever (See pictures below)
So, "Earring Ken" was actually "Earring Magic Ken". His whole thing was Mattel wanted to be cool and hip with the kids or whatever, so they created him. Except their idea of going out and finding inspiration and information as to what was "hip with the kids", was gay bars. And raves. As you can imagine, Earring Magic Ken did not stay on shelves too long (about 6 months) (though he did sell actually really well and I believe is still one of their most sold despite only being available for such a short time). I'm pretty sure his necklace charm could be swapped out too and also worn as actual earrings. HOWEVER, the part about Earring Magic Ken that kills me, is that because they went to gay bars, not only did they give him a mesh shirt and shit (as seen above), but the charm on his necklace? Is a cock ring. Did Mattel realize this? Probably the fuck not, but that's what it was💕
Growing up Skipper was also an actual doll, and just like in the movie, if you twisted her arm, she grew boobs. She also grew like an inch taller or something. I'm pretty sure she also was not on the shelf long, but she was introduced in the 1970s. So that's fun
Next up, Midge and Allan (who both play slightly bigger roles in the film but here's pictures anyways)
So Midge was Barbie's best friend, and was released specifically because Mattel found themselves faced with high demand for a pregnant Barbie doll. But of course, Barbie can never get married or be pregnant or have kids, because it ages her, and obviously seeming a little older means Barbie is suddenly worthless and unappealing (Woo patriarchy!). So their solution was Midge, who, ironically, ended up being everything Barbie couldn't (which is kind of funny since she's supposed to be able to be any and everything ever). So, them making her only personality trait in the movie her pregnancy, is kind of spot on. She did have actual dolls initially but then seemed to disappear for a while, having been replaced with other "Barbie's best friend!"'s. Actually they also replaced Barbie's siblings several times but that's another post. Midge did eventually return though in Life in the Dreamhouse (See below)
One thing they never mentioned in the movie, however, is that Allan was actually Midge's boyfriend. I don't have too much on him besides that but I think it's worth mentioning.
Anywho, there's my rant on some of the characters in the Barbie movie, if you made it this far, thanks :))
I learned Skipper (the Mattel character) had a friend she was sold alongside of in 1972 with the tagline “Skipper’s Tomboy Friend Tiff!” and I was like ‘oh they were DEFINITELY lesbians’. Tiff was discontinued shortly after her release, but I think she looked really cute, her face mold was so charming compared to Skipper’s soulless blue eyes.
I didn’t picture it here, but Tiff also came with a skateboard, so I like to think that these two met when Tiff was skating and bumped into Skipper meet-cute style.
Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures is so underrated. There is barely any fics and mentions about the movies and series.
It’s mostly just about Karbie. Yes they are cute but with a lot of confession teasing. One of my otp. I am a total multi shipper for sure.
I just know there are some fruity characters here. Like Skipper is a bi icon and Joy is a lesbian icon. To their first meeting to when Joy said “I wish she was my babysitter” was cute and funny.
Joy & Skipper are my recent ship they would be so cute. Innocent queer/ lesbian crushes.
Hopefully we get to see more of Joy!
I could see them continue with music with skipper DJ & joy being an artist.
In addition to the post I made earlier this morning ('I am totally normal rn' <-is lying vibes real rn-) I have a thought connected to that with just hurt my soul completely, even more than the Gloria one.
So you guys know about Skipper running away from Barbieworld, right? To go to babysit a kid somewhere?
I understand that it was quite surely a reference to a movie they released back in March (I honestly did not know the existence of this movie) but let's take a step back a lil.
Now, Weird Barbie told B---ie (now Barbara) that someone was playing wrong with her... but what if in Skipper's case it was played right?
It's kind of strange how Skipper got out of the Barbieworld? Like she needed to make things right? ...Comforting, perhaps?
Until you remember the existence of the movie.
Until you realise that Skipper is a sister.
Until you realise that she literally went to a completely different location just for a child.
Until you realise that she was literally offering a babysitting job to the child's parents.
UNTIL YOU REALISE THAT THE CHILD QUITE SURELY SAW SKIPPER AS AN OLDER SISTER FIGURE AND SAW THE BABYSITTING MOVIE AND WANTED SKIPPER TO BABYSIT THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE PROBABLY LEFT AT HOME A LOT AND SKIPPER WAS THEIR COMFORT PERSON.
AND THEN YOU REALISE THAT MATTELL SAW THAT AND TOOK SKIPPER AWAY FROM HER CHILD.
THEY TOOK AWAY THE CHILD'S FOUND REAL-LIFE SISTER.
My favorite part about Weird Barbie and Allan and all the other discontinued discarded Barbies and Kens is that they weren't affected by the brainwash, because of course they weren't. They didn't hold that much power in Barbieland, why would the Kens care about them in the Kendom. They're the queers and neurodivergents and disableds of society, those who don't quite belong or feel like part of the sisterhood, but are still absolutely victimized by the patriarchy. Those who stay loyal to feminism and human rights, even those that don't concern them, because they know first hand what it's like to be on the sideline. The compassion and empathy that Weird Barbie (or lesbian Barbie as I like to call her, we all know why she's always in the splits ✂️✂️) shows all the Barbies even though they call her Weird Barbie behind her back and to her face. The fact that, even though they don't like her, the Barbies know that if they ever need help they can go to her and she will always help them, and they trust her judgment. The symbolism behind the fact that when President Barbie offered her a job, she asked to clean Barbieland. She's essential to maintaining this society that rejects her. Sugar Daddy Ken and Magic Earring Ken and Allan are the epitome of queer men and trans mascs and non binary people. They're not nor will they ever be women. But they'll always reject and be rejected by the patriarchy. The discontinued Barbies are the disabled Barbies, they're angry about their design flaws, and they're right there in the trenches trying to get the leading Barbies to wake up and take back Barbieland. Oh I could talk about this part of the movie and the characters for hours. I love them so much.
Over the years the family has undergone some changes so just to recap quickly!
First and foremost we have Barbie. As we all know, Barbie debuted in 1959. Barbie was introduced as a "teen fashion model" but in subsequent years has run for President so we have to assume she is at least 35.
Skipper is Barbie's oldest younger sister. Skipper was released in 1963 - 1964 as an elementary school student, though over subsequent releases she aged into a teenager. (see also my post about the Growing Up Skipper.)
Next up was the Bendable! Poseable! Terrifying! Tutti. This sinister little sister debuted in 1965 but was discontinued in 1971.
Then comes Stacie. Stacie was comparable in age to Skipper was at debut, though she didn't debut until 1992.
Kelly, who later changed her name to Chelsea, was next along. She was introduced officially in 1995, though had one random appearance in 1991. She changed her name in 2010. Depending on release she was anything from a toddler to about six or seven years old.
Krissy was the short-lived baby of the family - she was only in production for four years, from 1999 to 2003.
But here's the thing about the Roberts family.
What is the story with Todd?
Todd was Tutti's twin brother on release.
However after Tutti was discontinued for the crime of looking like the most haunted Barbie I've ever seen, Todd hung around.
But now he was paired with Kelly?
This is the mysterious Kelly debut in 1991, before she was officially released as a younger doll a few years later.
