People are calling Ken a trophy husband but forget he has a LOW volume of clothes and nice shoes. Clothes he has to share with 2-7 other men (and Allen). Barbie is not buying that Guy a 20-Carat diamond ring or convertible sports car to keep him around.

Barbie first explored her political aspirations in 1992, when she ran for President for the first time.

The original Barbie for President gift set came packaged with both a long star-spangled costume dress and a more professional red skirt suit to campaign in.

She was not a candidate in 1996, but since returning to the campaign in 2000, has run in every election since.

In 2000, Barbie again had two outfits: a blue blazer and skirt for the campaign trail, and a purple/pink formal gown, presumably for celebrating her victory. Note that unlike the 1992 Barbie, this Barbie is wearing her campaign outfit and her celebration dress is boxed separately.

2004's candidacy was the first time Barbie wore trousers on the campaign trail, and also had a more feminist-marketed slogan with the new tagline, "Go Vote, Go Run, Go Lead, Go Girl!". This was also the first candidate who came packaged with only one outfit.

Come 2008, Barbie needs a cell phone to help her with her campaigning. She is back to wearing a skirt on the campaign trail, back to having a second outfit for celebrations - this time a tasteful pink number. Barbie's suit is itself spangled now, to add a bit of pizzazz to the electoral race.

2012 Barbie is has elbow length sleeves on her pink blazer, and a little dog in a secret service suit hiding behind her so she's a real frontrunner. This particular doll is advertised as "stands on her own - literally", so you know that Mattel knew that was a little on the nose.

Her 2016 candidacy had another step forward: now Barbie is packaged alongside her Vice President, and is advertised as being on the "first all female ticket". She was released in different variations, so different styled dolls of different appearances would appear as either President or Vice President.

The 2020 election contained a whole campaign team, ranging in formality from presidential candidate in a pink blazer to one of her campaigners in jeans and a t-shirt. You can see as well that Mattel has made use of different body types: one of the dolls is more petite than the others, and one uses the curvy body model.

I keep wondering what the heck the canon of the barbie story is going to be. are they like, real in their own dimension? and they go to earth and it's different?? Like a reverse Isekai??

Or are they more like thought forms?? manifesting in the world of ideas??

are they archons or tulpas? Though maybe Barbie is an egregore??Manufactured thoughtforms that are autonomous to a degree and unaware that they are made manifest by the minds of children and toy designers???

when barbie sits down on a bench and tries to figure out what to do next, she closes her eyes in an attempt to understand the girl she’s looking for. she feels a plethora of human emotions as the memories of the girl with her as a doll flashes before her eyes.

and for the first time in her life, barbie cries.

i think there’s a lot to think about from that scene alone. we as humans tend to overlook emotions. being sad is widely viewed as a sign of weakness, but for barbie?

it’s power.

Nutcracker and Swan Lake - Russia. Based on Russian ballets, Tchaikovsky can be seen in a picture in Clara's house, Ivan has a Russian name and accent

Rapunzel - Germany

12 Dancing Princesses - Germany. Based on a Brothers Grimm story

Princess and the Pauper - England. Based on The Prince and the Pauper, which was set in England

Magic of Pegasus - Netherlands during winter. Annika is a Dutch name and several characters, including her, wear vaguely Dutch clothing. Other places that have been theorized are Scandinavia and Russia.

Fairytopia trilogy - Portugal. Elina mentions knowing Mariposa, who's from Spain, and is "cut off from Flutterfield".

Barbie Diaries - Malibu, California

Island Princess - Italy. Names such as Rosella, Antonio, Luciana, and Ariana already tell us a lot, but the sunny weather, the characters all having tans, and some of the architecture also indicate this.

Christmas Carol - London, England

Three Musketeers - Paris, France

Diamond Castle - Europe, likely Germany/France, and/or Greece. Liana and Alexa wear stereotypically European dresses, the house looks like a traditional French cottage, but the Muses wear togas and the Diamond Castle itself looks vaguely Greek temple-ish on the inside.

Thumbelina - United States. Updated the setting and time period to the 2000s, clearly not in Denmark.

Mermaid Tale - Malibu, California

Mariposa - Spain. Also because of the accents.

Mermaid Tale 2 - Australia (the Ambassadors are however coded as Korean, African, Brazilian, and Russian), maybe New Zealand (Aquellia is implied to be near it)

Princess Charm School - Europe. No indication as to where "Gardania" is. However, most speaking Charm School students are from other places (Hadley is from South America, Isla is from Japan, Portia is from Scotland, and Josette is from Africa)

Princess and the Popstar - Monaco. Meribella looks like Monaco, with it's small status and how rich it is. Also Amelia mentions her grandma knowing the King of Spain.

Mariposa and the Fairy Princess - Malta. Shimmervale is "across Fairytopia", and the British accents of many people, as well as several dark haired background fairies, some with light skin, some with dark skin, a common feature of Maltese people.

In the Barbie movie, there is a gentleman in a green blazer with a bit of a scandalous name.

This is Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken.

I had never heard of this guy before I saw the movie, but since I recognised all the other named Barbies (and many background Barbies!) I thought for sure this must be a real doll that had somehow slipped me by.

That, it turns out, is only kind of true.

In 2009, to celebrate Barbie's 50th anniversary, there were a number of different special edition Barbies released. Pictured above is Palm Beach Sugar's Daddy Ken, a Silkstone Barbie doll for adult collectors, modeled after Slim Aaron's Palm Springs Party.

But as I'm sure you've all noticed, "Sugar's Daddy" Ken is a bit of a... poorly thought out name. It sounds awfully similar to another phrase.

I can't find any pictures of the doll in box or evidence that it actually hit shelves - despite this quote from a Mattel spokesperson about the unfortunately chosen name.

"At the end of the day, this collection is targeted toward adults," said spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni. "While the name of the doll does refer back to the dog, I think people are going to interpret it as they want to interpret it."

okay okay so what is barbieland what is the barbie lore

like there's only one stereotypical barbie, one midge, one stereotypical Ken - it basically seems like there's one of every kind of barbie doll within barbieland. but then there's weird barbie, who's been played with and altered, and stereotypical barbie is confirmed to be actually being played with by Gloria. so are all the dolls being played with by Gloria, or are they all being played with by different people?? then when changes happen within barbieland, it changes what Mattel is producing, implying that barbieland is more of a mattel idea space where the barbie products exist. but then it doesn't make sense that the dolls living there are also actually being played with by real people. but OH MY GOD COOL IDEA I JUST THOUGHT OF WAIT Gloria works for Mattel, yea?? so maybe that's what makes it different when she's playing with barbie - she's making drawings of barbie and imagining new things abt barbie but she's not playing with one barbie doll and making up stories abt her, she's thinking abt the concept of barbie. she's creating new designs for barbie, so it's altering the actual "idea" of barbie, therefore changing barbie within barbieland. maybe there's a special lore significance to the Mattel corporation building, or to being an employee there, or maybe it's just the fact Gloria is making up new types of barbies, but whatever the case there's something unusual abt her play impacting barbieland and most of the time kids playing with barbies doesn't impact barbieland. this goes directly against what the movie tells us abt weird barbie, but I'm gonna imagine that weird barbie isn't like one barbie that got played with too hard but more the idea of all barbies that get played with too hard cuz it fits the rest of the lore better. okay I figured out the lore you're welcome guys

ik I'm taking it too literally but like I can't not think abt that literally. ik a lot of ppl are gonna interpret it differently but that's how I'm gonna see the lore.

i want this to make complete sense like I can't accept that every barbie doll being played with by everyone in the world is living within barbieland because 1. that's way too many dolls barbieland doesn't seem that big and 2. everyone makes up different stories abt their barbies no way they'd all be living peacefully in their dream houses and going to the beach there'd be some drama!!

maybe there's different barbielands for each person playing with their barbies. I hope so that'd be rlly cool

if anyone's got a better explanation I'd love to hear it cuz I rlly want this to make sense😭

In episode "sticker it up" the delivery man says "Delivery for 1959 Malibu way", The first ever Barbie was released in 1959. And in episode "Closet clothes out" Barbie is wearing her clothes befofe getting rid of them and she is shown wearing her old bathing suit from the 1959 Barbie. During the "Amaze chase" episodes, when they are finding the old relics from Barbie's past, her old striped swim suit from the 1959 Barbie is shown as one of the relics.
