I have a moderation problem. From top to bottom, left to right, Gawain, Mordred, Perceval, Yvain/Owain, Palomides, Galahad, Agravaine, Lamorak, Kay, and Bedwyr. No, these are not all my faves. Yes, I made these shield emojis to use in my Arthurian Theater Server. No, I don't know how to end this ask...<3

how do u think the og welsh arthurian bitches would react to their englificationed counterparts. i think peredur and percival would challenge each other to duels. geraint (welsh) and geraint (english) wouldnt even bother with that and would probably just kill each other on the spot. gwenhwyfar and guinevere would b like, presedential alert the queens are fightingggggg. arthur (welsh) would do absolutely nothing to arthur (english) because arthur (welsh) would b taking a nap. myrddin and merlin and owain and owen and luned and linette would be gossiping in a corner and painting each others nails. cai would obliterate kay because cai has Magic Fucking Powers. mordred wouldnt have the faintest clue abt how to confront medraut because medraut is honestly a pretty chill guy. most importantly however. gawain and gwalchmai would b fucking on the floor

Just checked out the first episode of "The Winter King" and really like it so far!!! :D It's a new take on King Arthur based off the book trilogy of the same name with more actual British history tied in as well as some fantasy but it's really fantasy lite so far as in Merlin and the others like him in Avalon have some powers but also mostly visions (similar to ancient Celt pagan culture that ended up becoming Irish, Scottish, and Welsh). There's also the rise of Christianity happening too and it is super violent (which I fastforward through LOL). Then also some twists on characters too like Mordred (who is a baby and actually Uther's son with his wife/queen instead of Morgan/Morgana's), Arthur got exiled and is a warlord before Melin goes to bring him back to save their kingdom, and there's a LOTR style doomed ship of Nimue and Derfel as she'll lose her powers from the gods if she chooses to be with Derfel. Guinevere hasn't shown up yet but seems like it's next week from the description, a few of the roundtable knights are already in the show, and I know Lancelot eventually will be on the show too if it gets renewed as he's in the book series. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the show is over the next 9 weeks.

Shower thoughts: the Fair Unknown's villain
I don't know about you guys but I have a sneaking suspicion that Evraine from Le Bel Inconnu is actually Ywain, from Knight of the Lion/Lady of the Fountain. The reason is because one of the variants of Evraine's name I found is "Jrayne", depending on the manuscript. The "J" would have been pronounced with a "Y" sound.
The big problem with this theory is where would Ywain even get magic powers? I don't think Merlin teaches guys. Maybe, it was Lunette. *Shrugs*
Nah, maybe I'm wrong. Forget about it.

Rays of Gold - a story of pre-Shattering Leyndell
Chapter 1
Liurnian dawn was identical to Liurnian dusk: bleak, blue, and plagued by a mist so thick that it crept between the plates of Darian’s armor and burrowed beneath his clothes, settling upon his skin like cold sweat. As it collected at the base of his neck and ran down his spine, he clenched his gloved fists and fought the urge to shiver. None of the other men appeared bothered. He would not be the first to complain.
The waterlogged earth sucked at his boots, and the loud squelch that accompanied each step had long since gone from grating to infuriating. Stopping even for a moment would cause him to sink into the loamy soil; so overburdened was he by steel, leather, linen, and the weight of his own pride. He pressed on, ignoring the chill and the ever-present miasma of petrichor and wet rot. Bravely, he straightened his back and looked up to address his Master—or, rather, his Master’s horse, for his head barely came up to the beast’s shoulder.
“They’re saying the new Lord Lowell has Liurnian sympathies,” he declared.
Sir Owain’s horse snorted. Owain himself didn’t so much as glance down at his squire. “And who are they?”
“The men.”
“Which men?” The harshness of his tone caught Darian off guard. “If you volunteer information, be ready to disclose where it came from.”
“Sir.”
“I abhor idle talk, Darian.”
“Sir. My apologies, sir.”
Had the discussion ended there, Darian would not have pushed further, for he knew better than to test his Master. To his surprise, Owain spoke again. “House Lowell has served Leyndell for centuries. We’ve never had reason to question their loyalty. The new Lord was educated at the Academy of Raya Lucaria. That on its own isn’t indicative of treason.” He shot Darian a pointed look. “Do not suggest such a thing again.”
With that, Owain urged his steed to a canter and rode to the front of the line. Darian squared his shoulders and apologized to the ground, watching listlessly as muddy runoff welled up in the craters left by Lamaech’s hooves. He imagined the same filthy water seeping through his pores and diluting his blood, then leaching deeper still to rot his bones.
Only the carriage remained relatively unmarred by dirt. It was massive—needlessly so, for it was only meant to carry one passenger—and obscenely ornate, every inch adorned by curling flourishes, scalloped columns and garlands of laurel. Darian assumed it was just as sumptuously appointed within. Lord Lowell would spend the next three days warm and dry, and his sainted shoes need never touch the ground.
One of the trolls tasked with pulling the carriage sank to its knees, exhausted. Its companion stopped, looked about nervously, then began to moan in distress. Darian felt a pang of sympathy for both creatures as his comrades drew their swords and approached the pair, banging on their shields and shouting threats.
He glared reproachfully at the carriage. Such trouble, and all for one Lord.

I occasionally see Henry IV's treatment of the Mortimer boys as "proof" Richard III had no need to kill the Princes in the Tower and it always strikes me as a false equivalency.
Henry IV had very good reasons to keep the Mortimer boys alive. The Mortimer claim to the throne would not be extinguished by their deaths nor transfer to him, but would devolve upon their Mortimer relatives. Their sister, Anne's claim was eventually used by Richard Duke of York and Edward IV as justification for the Yorkist usurpation of the throne. More relevant to Henry IV's lifetime, however, was the boys' uncle, Sir Edmund Mortimer, whose loyalties appear to have concerned Henry even before he became an ally of the Welsh rebel Owain Glyn Dŵr. The Glyn Dŵr-Mortimer alliance posed a clear risk to Henry, one that would be only worsened should the Mortimer boys have died. Mortimer was out of Henry's reach, unable to be swiftly or easily dealt with. Another interesting facet was Mortimer naming his son after Lionel of Antwerp, from whom the Mortimers derived their claim to the throne. In short, Mortimer was an opponent in open rebellion against Henry, showed clear interest in championing his family's claim to the throne and was also unable to be quickly or efficiently dealt with. Killing the Mortimer boys would have only produced a much greater threat to Henry IV's reign.
Nor was the risk limited to Edmund Mortimer. The Mortimer claim derived through the female line which meant every girl and woman in the family could have passed on her claim to another family. Again, Anne Mortimer and the Yorkist claim is the obvious example but more pertinent to Henry IV was the claim passed from Elizabeth Mortimer (Sir Edmund's sister) to her son, Henry Percy. This Percy was still a child, like the Mortimer boys were, but he was also the son of Henry "Hotspur" Percy and grandson of Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, both of whom rebelled against Henry IV. If Henry killed the Mortimer boys and Edmund Mortimer died (naturally or unnaturally), Percy would likely become the next figurehead for the next rebellion, serving as an alternate king. Like Edmund Mortimer, he was also out of Henry's reach, meaning there was no quick and easy way to deal with his claim.
In realpolitik terms, murdering the Mortimer boys would have only created problems for Henry. They were children in Henry's custody, raised side-by-side with Henry's own sons. Any threat they posed was, realistically, small. Their deaths would only allow much more dangerous opponents to inherit their claim and pose a much greater risk to Henry IV. Nor was it workable for Henry to wipe out the entire Mortimer line, including collateral branches, to eliminate the threat. Additionally, the destruction of the Mortimers likely would have backfired terribly on him. The murder of children was considered abhorrent by their society, regardless of any good realpolitik reasoning, and Henry's reputation was already poor. For Henry, the option that gave him the best security was the option he took - he left the Mortimer boys alive.
This is not true for the Princes in the Tower. Leaving aside the debates on their fate, their claim derived from the same source that Richard III's did. When they were declared illegitimate, their claim devolved on Richard. Their death would have only confirmed Richard's right to the throne, especially considering Richard was not interested in championing the claims of Edward IV's daughters or George Duke of Clarence's children.
I am not getting into the debate of whether Richard did/did not kill the Princes because I don't have the time or energy for that. What I am saying, though, is the argument that he may not have killed them because Henry IV didn't kill the Mortimer boys is disingenuous. It was in Henry's best interests to keep them alive because killing them only meant their claim would have passed to more dangerous claimants who had already rebelled against him or were the children of those who had already rebelled against him. Richard III, on the other hand, had no such issue. The Princes' claim posed a threat to him (if they were not a threat, why were they kept imprisoned after they were de-legitimised and why did they mysteriously disappear? Even if one accepts the theory that Richard sent them to the continent or the Princes had no quarrel with their benevolent uncle, he must have done so with great secrecy and for a reason - i.e. he feared that they would be used against him as figureheads for a rebellion). But with Clarence's children both removed from the succession by attainder and in his custody, the claim to the throne that the Princes possessed fell to him, not to any of his enemies. Indeed, the great threat to his reign was the revival of the Lancastrian claim in the form of the future Henry VII.

Arthurian characters I believe in my soul are gay
Agravaine: He is just such a gay man whether he’s cis or trans or single or married to Laurel doesn’t matter he loves men end of story
Galehaut: You’d think it’s a given, but Lavinia Collins wrote him straight with sons, so he has to be mentioned and it’s non-negotiable
Bedwyr: He is Kay’s companion, they come as a set, the better half of married couple middle management, nicer of the two but he will support Kay’s antics so tread carefully
Percival: Pronouns irrelevant—they are a big fat gay who turned chivalry into a butch gender
Galahad: Straight people don’t act like that even if they’re Catholic actually especially if they’re Catholic
Sebile: One lesbian to rule them all, I mean, she hit the jackpot with Morgan obviously come on
Kay: See Bedwyr, also the nickname thing just has vibes, why you thinking so much about other men?
Sagramore: He and Agravaine are ex-boyfriends obviously
Gromer: Specifically if we assume the one from Turk and Wedding is the same guy, involvement with Gawain plus invisibility cloak potential is just so fruity
Lionel: Hand to god I can’t think of a time he was associated with a lady I don’t think he even knows knights are supposed to perform feats for them and I’m not going to tell him
Yvain: The marriage to Laudine was a fluke they divorced amicably and he’s living his truth now and that truth? Pet play
Laurel: “Wife” of Agravaine shut up it’s a piece of paper she wouldn’t touch a man with a ten foot pole it’s called lavender marriage sweaty look it up
Lucius: That man wants Arthur so bad it makes him look stupid
Pinel: Yeah the poison apple guy he has the same vibes as Gromer the obsession with Gawain comes with cannotations
Brangaine: She’s not upset Isolde drank the love potion because she was trusted with it, she’s upset they didn’t drink it together
Tor: My friend Tor told me he likes men, hope that clears things up

"[Constance of York] became the first member of the house of York to conspire against the Lancastrian monarchy.
At about the feast of St Valentine in 1405 Lady Constance abducted Edmund and Roger Mortimer, the great grandsons of Edward III’s second son, Lionel duke of Clarence, from Windsor Castle. Her plan seems to have been to take them into Wales where Owain Glyn Dŵr and Henry Percy, first earl of Northumberland, were plotting with the boys’ uncle, Sir Edmund Mortimer, to rebel against Henry IV once more. However, she was caught at Cheltenham and taken before the royal council. She then tried to blame the conspiracy on her brother Edward which has earned her the condemnation of modern historians. Although York was briefly imprisoned at Pevensey for failing to reveal what he knew of the plot, Henry IV seems to have been unpersuaded by Constance’s allegations. Constance, like her brother, escaped the bloody fate of recent rebels, presumably as a consequence of the combination of her royal blood and her sex [...] Nonetheless she had certainly forfeited any chance of arranging a marriage for her son Richard."
-J.L. Laynesmith, "Cecily Duchess of York"

merlin S1 rewatch: episode 9
let’s move on to ep 1x09 because I need to get on. with my life. I already re-watched this ep months ago and I can’t be arsed to do it again so I’m going to use screencaps and perhaps the transcript to refresh my memory.
kilgharrah warning merlin that excalibur MUST NOT be wielded by anyone but arthur, and merlin handing the sword to uther literally the next morning is so funny to me. it's kind of the same thing that happens with the cup of life, when iseldir tells merlin “hey this is important so don’t lose it okay?” and five minutes later we see the cup rolling down a hill. I love consistent characterisation. please don’t give this boy anything important for safekeeping he has enough on his plate already!!
Tumblr media
I think Arthur’s coronet looks a bit dumb but still it’s nothing compared to the horrendous Burger King crown he'll wear as king. why did uther get such a prettier crown. why couldn't arthur just wear his father's crown. so many questions
why did they name the undead knight tristan, was he supposed to be the tristan? I think he was. I think their take on tristan and isolde in S4 was so disappointing btw. anyway moving on
Merlin: Gaius have you seen that knight’s crest before? Gaius: No, I don’t think so. I didn’t see it clearly. Actually I’m not even sure I saw a knight. Perhaps it was a trick of the light or a collective hallucination
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sir Owain: I don’t need luck Arthur: oh fuck he’s going to die
Tumblr media
Arthur’s face after Uther holds him back and someone else picks up the undead knight’s gauntlet. so much self-sacrificing acts of bravery and NONE of them done by him. wrong and upsetting
Tumblr media
S1 Arthur I'm not sure how to tell you this so I'll just say it. your haircut looks dangerously close to a mullet
Tumblr media
Merlin: maybe arson can fix this
Nimueh telling Uther she was his friend!!! fuck season 6 I want a Merlin prequel
Tumblr media
he’s a precious baby. he’s shmol. only tiny
Tumblr media
gwen doing her whole “you know I'd grant you anything merlin… I mean, not anything! haha” meanwhile merlin is too worried about keeping arthur alive to notice. GIRL HE'S BUSY
Tumblr media
WHY. who stands like this
Tumblr media
he holds this stupid pose the entire time morgana is talking to him. imagine begging someone not to commit suicide while they brood and look out of the window like a sullen byronic hero. I would have pushed him out of the window. drama ass bitch
Tumblr media
this is the second nighttime encounter between uther and gaius in this episode. uther saying goodbye to gaius before going to fight in arthur’s place. toxic yaoi. is this anything
Tumblr media
YOU KNOW NOTHING YOU STUPID CHILD. I love that Kilgharrah is a hater and a bitch. to be fair to him he spent 20 years in solitary confinement so he's earned it
Tumblr media
gaius drugging arthur then gently helping him into his bed is hilarious. he’s so good at lying and drugging people. big fan of gaius using his evil talents for the greater good, or just to have a laugh sometimes which is equally valid
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what a fine blade you have there… it would be a shame if something were to happen to it
Tumblr media
he’s wearing silver bracelets!! plural!!
Tumblr media
[Enter Arthur, visibly furious]
Tumblr media
Gaius [gathering his things]: I've just remembered I've left something on the stove. I must go right now immediately
Tumblr media
Arthur [while Gaius scurries away]: YOU HAD GAIUS DRUG ME??
arthur and uther little father and son moment was cute ngl
there are a few more scenes until the end but I don't have much to say about them except that I love gaius and merlin's relationship
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gaius: [stares loudly] Merlin: [pretends not to notice]
