been thinking a lot about this page since finishing Berserk. To me, this right here is the core of the series. This is what the story became. Guts, Casca, and their new found family.

I know in my heart, however the final cliffhanger was meant to shake out, however casca finally became able to move on from her eclipse trauma, wherever life was going to take Guts and Casca next, their new family would have gone with them. All of them and their silly little elf duo, journeying on into the horizon, into the future. Thats the image of Berserk thats going to stay in my heart.

He turns battle into art. Christ. He has a blade between his toes. And are we gonna forget how he caught a flying arrow with his hand? From behind?? Huh??

I read somewhere (... i think it was screenrant but nevermind that) that the new arc of Berserk is called "eastern exile."

Which brings me back here:

Miura did say that Guts and Griffith would meet several times again before the end of the series, so perhaps they're going to both end up in the same place.

That said, there are other options, too - 372 finished with a line emphasizing that the world plays out in Griffith's hands, so perhaps he simply knows that the next chapter in the saga continues to the east (meta, but not really), or it's another reference to his general sense of Guts' presence, which has arguably been alluded to before.

All that said, and bearing in mind that I don't hate the new chapters like a lot of people do, nor do I think they're flawless like some oithers do, this does kind of highlight an ongoing issue with the post-Miura chapters.

It's sometimes hard to parse what's happening, due to the reduction in dialogue, as well as the less polished visuals.

There's a weird thing at the end of the current chapter that says Guts is in chains but I feel like it's clear that he isn't - the Kushans go after him with chains, and then you see the chains of the beast break and then at the end you see his feet walking. My GUESS is that they're going for "Guts is in chains and the Beast is in residence" but that's not as clear as it could be due to the visuals....

But also because of storytelling disconnects. For example, when the Kushans start toward the room Guts is in, and Azan freaks out because if they open the door, the Black Swordsman will "awaken" and tear them limb from limb, I thought... he has no reason whatsoever to say that guts will tear them to pieces. Because he hasn't. Moved.

Which then made me think if Miura were still here maybe he would still not be moving, but there'd be something less pathetic and more unnerving about it to give the people on the boat the sense that there's danger in waking him up in this state.

I can see how this could have happened. eg, Miura said Griffith takes off with Casca, Guts can't land a single blow which causes a mental breakdown about his own impotence, then the Kushans board the ship and people are afraid if they wake Guts up there will be an even bigger disaster.

Plot points without any context or detail. Which is where you start seeing the biggest gaps - because no doubt Miura would have done the work to make these pieces fit together, but without him all they're doing is hitting the points on the outline one by one.

Also, Rickert (and presumably Erica) is with the Kushans, which should make this Silat's group. Depending on how deep Miura intended to go with the Eastern world thing, this could contextualize his comments about the later story dealing with Tao principles/etc. It's also interesting bc he ALSO said that the Godhand would appear more and more... which does imply a greater presence for them in other parts of the world than we were previously, necessarily made aware of.

Is Guts smart? What can you say about his intelligence? From the male part of the fandom where I was, they called him a brilliant strategist and in general he is the smartest character in Berserk lol It's been a while since I read Berserk, but I feel like Guts was definitely doing something irrational.

He's not the smartest character in Berserk lol, but he's not dumb either.

He's good at like, analytical thinking in the middle of a fight, eg when he fights Silat and pinpoints his weapons' weaknesses despite never having seen them before, realizing he can't defeat Zodd in a contest of strength but he can break Zodd's sword, recognizing Serpico's advantages whenever they duel, etc.

He's also decent at putting two and two together when it comes to understanding people. Like when he realizes Farnese traded an engagement for a ship, or when he outmaneuvers the priest in the troll village in rhetoric and forces him to extend them hospitality lol. I think that he often doesn't give a shit about this kind of thing so he can come across as dumb (not knowing Griffith intends to marry Charlotte, not bowing to the king until Griffith makes him, etc) but I feel like it's a matter of priority. When it has an immediate impact on him, he can figure shit out, otherwise he doesn't bother.

But yeah I don't think he's one of the smartest characters in Berserk. He's average at best, with a talent wrt fighting tactics. Griffith, Serpico, Judeau, Casca, even Rickert are all smarter than him imo. He has a lot of blind spots that fuck him over and make him miss obvious things and act irrationally (must fight monsters, must earn Griffith's love, must get revenge). Godo even has a line in chapter 131 about Guts running towards something singlemindedly and nicking himself on something else because he misses everything he's not focused on.

And he's just not very mindful in general. He can use his brain but like, the big temptation of the Beast of Darkness/the armour is turning off his brain and acting on instinct lol. He doesn't demonstrate any interest in learning new things beyond fighting techniques, he's adequate at reading people but fails at it a lot too, he's cocky and headstrong, prone to ignoring his own vulnerabilites...

So yeah, that's my take. He's not stupid, he has some smart moments, and especially when it's applicable to fighting he's very capable of analytical thought, but intelligence isn't exactly his biggest asset, and plenty of other characters are smarter than him. Thanks for asking!

Berserk chapter 376 (spoilers)

I found this a really interesting chapter. It seems like things are finally moving along. Also we got a lot of dialogue this time compared to previous chapters.

So our group arrived in Kushan territory.

We see the Kushan palace, where the characters currently are, which is clearly based on the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey:

As Silat explains, their ship drifted into Kushan waters and now they are refugees there. For this, they have to serve in their military now (it's their custom).

Guts is in chains, weakened, without his weapons. We see Schierke helping him in her astral form then we see her unconsciuos.

Rickert asks Silat to release Guts but he tells him that Guts is dangerous right now and he's locked up not only for their safety but also for his own.

Rickert tries to talk with Puck but he doesn't seem to remember him. Why? Weird. (Or is he pretending not to know him?)

He also asks why Casca is not there with them since they went to Elf Island for her... and then realises that it has to do with Griffith.

Really cool panel.

And we finally find out that the Kushan are recruiting troops because they're going to war with Griffith and Falconia.

In chaper 372 we saw Griffith saying this:

And now it's revealed that Griffith's forces are close to the Kushan empire's western borders.

Silat says that Griffith fears "that which lies beyond his reason, beyond the demonic" and that's why Elf Island was wiped out and the Kushan are next, so they're moving to fight him.

So the Kushan will have the magic users of Elf Island on their side (Daiba wants to take them under his wing) and Guts' crew. Possibly Guts himself? If he's going to be released and can wield his sword again (I think it's likely, maybe this is going to be one of those fights Miura talked about before the actual Final Battle, Guts VS Griffith, with those scenes and those lines Miura described to Mori... impatiently waiting to see that.)

So it looks like we'll have a war arc, probably one of the final arcs. It feels like we're slowly reaching the end.

Apparently Mori said in an interview that it won't take more than 10 years to finish the manga. (source)
