I love short story collections and really need to get around to reading the ones I have on my shelves/Kindle. Why Visit America was recommended to me by some excellent bookstagrammers whose opinion I really trust so I decided to prioritise it in my #wasitworththebump challenge. ⁣ ⁣ This collection consists of both speculative and satirical tales which portray a country eerily familiar to our own and in some cases, suggests future developments that may not be far beyond the realm of mankind. As with all short story collections, I connected with some stories more than others but I was delighted at the sheer wealth of excellent ones compared to others that were enjoyable but didn’t blow me away. ⁣ ⁣ We learn about a world that undergoes strange new rituals when it comes near the end of someone’s life (probably my favourite story), a young man who wants to transition his entire being to a digital format, a young woman who abducts (her own) child from a government facility and a man who commits a terrible crime and is returned to his family with his memory wiped. ⁣ ⁣ These stories were powerful, impactful and thought-provoking. I never quite knew what I was going to get and I loved the unpredictability and excitement of that. If you like your fiction a bit quirky and a bit other-worldly - think Black Mirror - then this is the collection for you! To go back to Murakami after what seems like ages (it has been- last year somehow I missed reading any of his books 🫣) is to go back to life. 24 short stories, what our writer calls sprints, written in between his novels, (you guessed it right-marathons) are perfect for anyone who wants to sample his style. On offer are- crows that know the difference between cakes, a one-legged surfer, a couple who take off to Greece on a whim, unexplained disappearances and cats, of course they are Mhrakami's mysterious cats. This was my fifth by him and the one that left me most disappointed. Apart from 3-4 stories, the rest were less nuanced than what I had expected. Short stories lack the room to flesh out their characters, mostly, & someone who prefers character-driven tales vis a vis plot-driven narratives, the commitment they demand and offer is inadequate. Also, I felt at sea with some stories- neither I could understand their meaning nor the metaphor behind them, if any. But. Great if you want bite-sized Murakami morsels. Also great if time is at a premium (when isn't it?). Kayla just finished this AMAZING set of short stories by @elizabethmerry51 ❤️👏 #⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Elizabeth Merry is not a good short story writer, she is one of the BEST. If James Joyce and Flannery O’Conner had a literary baby, it would be WE ALL DIE IN THE END. These stories are packed with wit and dark humor reminiscent of O’Conner ( my favorites in this collection are “May” and “Rosemary” because I actually laughed out loud) while still displaying a Joyce-like love of human understanding. The characters (though all unique and a little eccentric) are so realistic that I had to keep reminding myself that this was fiction. I actually read this on my kindle, but after completing it I went back and bought the paperback edition on Amazon so I can keep a copy on my shelf. Hello everyone and hope you’re having a good week so far! Today I’m taking part in the #onlyonegenre challenge which I was tagged in by @field.of.books I found this so tough as I read quite a lot of different genres - I love literary fiction, thrillers and crime, horror and fantasy and I’ve always got a nonfiction book on the go. The first story in Karen Russell's Orange World wowed me, but none of the other stories caught me the same way. But, even though at the time I wasn't impressed, several of the stories have lingered with me. The first (The Prospectors) and the last (Orange World) were definitely the best, but I also liked The Bad Graft & Bog Girl (though this felt very familiar to the movie Lars and the Real Girl). The rest didn't quite do it for me.
