Yaaaay it’s Friday! Book haul time again and this time, it’s three gorgeous hardbacks. 😍 Thank you so much to @tarheelreader and @penguinrandomhouse for sending me a physical copy of Songbirds. I loved this book when I buddy read it with Jenni and you can check out my review somewhere on the grid 😅 Bewilderment was short-listed for the Booker prize this year and is one of the books from that list that I’m most excited about reading. Check out the lovely @sandladysbooks page for her incredible review of it. Theo Byrne is a promising young astrobiologist and the widowed father of nine year old boy called Robin. Robin feels deeply, adores animals and paints elaborate pictures. He is also on the verge of being expelled for smashing his friend’s face with a metal thermos. The only solution offered to help him is psychoactive drugs. The only thing for it is for Theo to take Robin to other planets 🪐 Finally, Afterparties is a short story collection which I managed to win in a @sandladysbooks giveaway! I was delighted as this collection offers an insight into the lives of Cambodian-Americans, switching between the absurd and the tender-hearted. Sounds fascinating! I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookhaul #hardbackhoarder #hardbackhaul #newbooksplease #songbirds #christylefteri #bewilderment #richardpowers #bookerprizeshortlist2021 #bookerprize #afterparties #shortstorycollection #anthonyveasnaso https://www.instagram.com/p/CWczYjHLgtC/?utm_medium=tumblr

If you've been following me for a while , you know how much I love short stories. They are quick bites to get me through reading slumps. They also give me little glimpses of life and short takes on different issues. I also love when short stories become longer works in the future. QOTD: What short story collection have you read recently that you loved? Thanks to @eccobooks and @bibliolifestyle for the gifted copy. Afterparties by Anthony Vesna So released August 3rd. Make sure you pick up a copy to get a taste of Cambodian life. 🥳SYNOPSIS🥳 Seamlessly transitioning between the absurd and the tenderhearted, balancing acerbic humor with sharp emotional depth, Afterparties offers an expansive portrait of the lives of Cambodian-Americans. As the children of refugees carve out radical new paths for themselves in California, they shoulder the inherited weight of the Khmer Rouge genocide and grapple with the complexities of race, sexuality, friendship, and family. A high school badminton coach and failing grocery store owner tries to relive his glory days by beating a rising star teenage player. Two drunken brothers attend a wedding afterparty and hatch a plan to expose their shady uncle’s snubbing of the bride and groom. A queer love affair sparks between an older tech entrepreneur trying to launch a “safe space” app and a disillusioned young teacher obsessed with Moby-Dick. And in the sweeping final story, a nine-year-old child learns that his mother survived a racist school shooter. With nuanced emotional precision, gritty humor, and compassionate insight into the intimacy of queer and immigrant communities, the stories in Afterparties deliver an explosive introduction to the work of Anthony Veasna So. #Afterparties #AnthonyVeasnaSo #eccobooks #bibliolifestyle #books #booktour #bookfeature #bookish #bookphotos #Cambodia #Asia #AsianLit #AAPIbooks #shortstories #bookworm #bookdragon #reading #bibliophile #essays #newrelease #BrooklynBeerGarden #BooksandArt #BooksandMurals #bookstagram #BIPOC #ownvoices #diversereads #decolonizeyourfeed #paperbacks (at Brooklyn Beer Garden-Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS2eAbprKfu/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello everyone and hope you’re having a good week so far! Today I’m taking part in the #onlyonegenre challenge which I was tagged in by @field.of.books I found this so tough as I read quite a lot of different genres - I love literary fiction, thrillers and crime, horror and fantasy and I’ve always got a nonfiction book on the go. Today I’m sharing some of the short stories collections I’ve collected - most unread of course 😂 as I do love the magic there can be with an author who is gifted at writing short fiction. I’ve also got quite a few on my Kindle I’m excited to get to. My absolute favourite is What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky. I just want everyone to read it! 😍 Other than that, I’ve read and enjoyed Four Past Midnight and some of 20th Century Ghosts. I’d love to know how you feel about short story collections. Love, hate or ambivalent? 🤣 Also If you’ve got any recommendations for ones I need to read, let me know in the comments below! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #shortstories #shortstoriescollections #shortstoryauthors #victoriahislop #thelastdanceandotherstories #whatitmeanswhenamanfallsfromthesky #lesleynnekaarimah #aguidetobeingborn #ramonaausubel #foxseason #agnieszkadale #20thcenturyghosts #joehill #whyvisitamerica #matthewbaker #fourpastmidnight #stephenking #afterparties #anthonyveasnaso #hagforgottenfolktalesretold #bookstack #tbrpile https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-uJGhgTGD/?utm_medium=tumblr
