How long was Cas dead, anyway?

I think they reunited around day 18-24 days ish. The scripts give us some clues. (Based on this post)

==Dean is grieving hard==

He’s not in denial, like Sam seems to be -> “Is he really dead?” “You know he is.”

And because Dean now knows Chuck & Amara, he’s not getting stuck in bargaining stage (his usual MO). There is no door of hope to leave ajar after the cosmic consequences are rendered. (Not even the symbolic going-through-the-motions kind that he never intends to open again.)

No, this time, Dean’s in the throes of an incredibly frightening, paralyzing despair (images).

This is partially due to the fact that he saw it coming, and he fought so hard. He resolved to avoid the looming, cosmic consequences, to “not let Cas walk away, not again (script).” Dean made up his mind to act to protect the, “everything he’s ever wanted (script).”

And still, everything went so wrong.

The grief, then, is different. It’s a despair born of crushed hopes and dreams. Not to mention, forgiveness and acceptance—as Dean got onboard to help Cas, regardless of his own misgivings, because Cas “had faith in the kid.”

After everyone dies, Dean pleads with God/Chuck. Chuck is the one who brought Cas back before and the only one who seems able to rebuild angels. He doesn’t answer.

Even though Dean had a special connection to Amara, the one who resurrected his burned-up, supposed-to-stay-dead mother, she doesn’t answer either.

This time, he knows they’re out there, perhaps even listening. And they’re not answering because Dean’s run out of free passes and miracles.

This time, that knowledge crushes him where he stands.

DAY 1-2 (Lost and Found)

13x01 starts in the twilight hours after the big Lucifer fight.

Dean takes a shot at Jack, and Jack flees.

Heaven and Hell hunt them relentlessly.

They retrieve Jack from North Cove police station.

An angel stabs Jack in the chest with an angel blade, and he seems astonished to be “fine.”

Sam and Dean take time to grieve and scatter ashes.

The funeral occurs that evening, and they quickly get on the road.

DAY 3 ish (The Rising Son)

In 13x02, they're still driving home from the funeral towards the bunker, "12 hours till we get home," and Sam convinces Dean to stop at a motel.

Addition: When they eat, Jack remarks that he's 3 days old. "3 days, 17 hours, and 42 minutes."

Over the course of this episode, per the script, 2 days pass.

They eat dinner, go to a tattoo parlor, meet up with Donatello, and stay overnight in the motel.

Heaven and Hell continue to hunt them relentlessly.

Sam, Dean, and Donatello debate nature vs nurture, with Dean and Donatello leaning towards nature.

Sam psycho-analyzes Dean and delivers euphemisms to Jack about Dean “wanting to protect everyone and getting his wires crossed,” but ultimately, he isn’t forthcoming to Jack about the reality of the situation. (That is, it was Lucifer that killed Cas, and Lucifer who pulled Mary into another world--that Dean's grieving!) These important details might've helped Jack to understand his situation with a lot more clarity and grace. This will cause Jack to cool towards Sam when Dean reveals the truth during an argument.

Demons find them the next morning.

In fact, Dean nearly dies against a common demon, getting cornered on a hotel bed, but he is saved at the last minute by Sam’s interference.

Jack, tricked by Asmodeus, nearly releases the Shadim.

They drive home.

Later, Jack freaks out about being impervious to stabbing. In his new bunker room, he laments, “What the hell am I? I can’t control… whatever this is. I will hurt someone.”

Dean tells him he will be Jack's executioner if Jack loses control.

At most, it's been only 5 days since everyone died.

DAY 5 ish (Patience)

13x03 picks up mere hours after they get home, and it covers 5 days total. So, that brings us to a decently solid total of 10-ish days when this episode finishes.

Dean can't bear to be in the bunker with mission-mode Sam and Jack, so he takes off on a hunt.

Clearly in no shape to hunt, Dean dies at the hands of a wraith (and so does Jody). They are both saved by Patience’s interference.

Dean tells Patience there’s no joy in this life. Only pain and death.

Sam and Dean have a huge fight about Jack, during which Dean accidentally gives Jack context to the situation (re: Cas’s death, Mary’s plight). This causes Jack, already exhausted by Sam’s well-meaning training regimen, to cool towards Sam the next morning.

Cas appears to awaken in The Empty on day 9 or 10.

DAY 10-11 ish (The Big Empty)

13x04 SEEMS like the very next morning, because Dean AND Jack are both still chilly towards Sam. The air is described as arctic, with Dean giving Sam a, "don't even try it, motherfucker," face. Jack accuses Sam of wanting to use him as an interdimensional can opener and "being just like Asmodeus," and Sam comes clean about the truth.

Sam pushes them all to go on a case together. Jack says he doesn’t want to go at first. Sam wants Jack to go with them for the express purpose of forcing Dean to be around him and warm up to him, which isn’t fair to Dean or Jack…not really.

This storyline covers the family therapy scene (great analysis), wherein an interesting attempt at therapy is made under dishonest constraints.

Dean, still clearly in no shape to hunt, is easily overtaken by the shifter and nearly dies. He is saved by Jack’s interference.

According to the script, 13x04 occurs over 4 days. Commentary//

That means that Dean thawed to Jack, after our total of a mere 14 days. By the end of this episode, they're on shaky terms, and by the beginning of 13x06, calling out to each other in a friendly manner, "How was the case?"

Jack "puts a dent in Dean's armor," per the script, even before he saves them with his powers. Dean is doing everything he can not to like Jack, and it’s clear from the script that he’s failing.

At the end of the episode, Dean tells Sam to absorb the weight of the hunting burden, because he’s got no hope left.

Cas appears to awaken in a field on day 14. Presumably, his ashes are in the middle of nowhere, and he starts walking.

DAY 14-20 ish? (Advanced Thanatology)

Here’s where it gets foggier.

I can't tell exactly when 13x05 picks up with respect to the previous episode, but it seems like only a little bit of time has passed.

I would say a week at most has passed, but possibly as little as a day or two, and the case itself, per the script, covers another 4 days.

However, if Cas awoke in The Empty on day 10, and woke in the field around day 14, I think I favor a shorter timeline here with some of the “days” being overlapping back story from the case itself.

Anyway, Jack has been making his way through Sam's DVDs, "Red Sonja, Beast Master, Beast Master II." Commentary//

Sam does not intuit why Dean is up late at night/early twilight hours, making a PB & J (analysis).

Sam tries to remedy Dean’s overwhelming grief by pushing breakfast beer and strip clubs toward him. Alcohol to numb the pain + sexy stuff as a distraction. Now more than ever, Dean seems to perform those only for Sam’s benefit. (It seems Sam did not pay attention to Mia Vallens's therapy, except as a means to validate his own motives for trying to save Mary. Ouch! Poor Sam!)

Sam is not great with empathy here, bless my neuroatypical man-child. He’s dealing with a loss of his own, of course, and he’s been shown to be an impatient, mission-motivated griever (analysis).

Anyway, he’s completely at sea with Dean’s powerful grief, and he seems tragically unaware of Dean's close calls/being off his game over the course of the last few hunts.

Sam, perhaps understandably, wants Dean to be there for him n’ Jack, as caretaker and comrade, but Dean is too mentally wounded to bear the weight of that expectation. (Btw, I don’t think Sam really “gets” the Cas thing till 15x09 The Trap: Sam’s future is symbolized by Eileen-as-hope (analysis) and Sam realizes Dean’s future is built around Cas-as-foundation.) Dean dies...again//

Dean attempts suicide.

He tells Billie he doesn’t matter.

After he revives, Dean tells Sam, “No. Sam, I’m not okay. I’m pretty far from okay… And I would take the hit… And now Mom and Cas… And I – I don’t know. I don’t know.”

This is an elegant parallel to season 7’s grieving Dean, about his not being able to “shake” what happened with Cas, and admitting, “he doesn’t know why.” (Cas is different. Cas has always been different.) In season 7, he also says, “I’ll do what I can,” in response to Sam telling him to get his head in the game and stay alive. Cas is a core wound in both scenarios.

==Death & resurrection==

So, that would bring our guesstimate to Cas reuniting with the boys around 20-24 days. So, at most a little over 3 weeks but possibly closer to 4, especially if the backstory timelines of actual “case days” overlap, like 13x05 potentially does.

I am reasonably certain Cas awakened in the field near day 14. I’d personally put the actual reunion at 18-20 ish days, and certainly not longer than a month. They reunite in early June, I think. Blackberries are a summer fruit, and there are wild blackberries in the field where Cas awakens.

Dean drives to Cas and meets up with him, "in the middle of nowhere," so it seems Cas's grave and subsequent walk to civilization was in quite a remote area.

Going back through this, I was pretty astounded how Dean kept dying or nearly dying in those days following Cas’s death. He was definitely in no state to be hunting.

Picking your brain on Jack stuff (2 of 2)!

This is a long-winded way of asking you your thoughts on how Jack's flashbacks and the snake relate to his identity and soul. I'm just not sure how to phrase it, so you get this rambley thing instead. Happy Thursday, haha.

After the mysterious girl, there's the snake. Oh, the snake. The obvious parallel to the snake is the cultural myth of Lucifer.

 The snake appears and asks, "Who are you, really? Who are you meant to be?"

This snake isn't coming to him with lies, statements, or riddles. Only simple questions. Perhaps asking questions is what generates real Wisdom, then? Or perhaps Lucifer's (and humanity's) original crime came from this tendency to question. I recall Lucifer's season 5 quote:

"We're going to kill each other. And for what? One of Dad's tests. And we don't even know the answer. We're brothers. Let's just walk off the chessboard."

Questioning is that wonderful, wonderful disobedience. The Gnostic interpretation imagines the serpent in the Garden as a force of Good, that the serpent was sent to reveal to humans the evil intentions of their creators. The serpent succeeds in convincing them to eat the fruit and become like the divine, capable of distinguishing between good and evil ("empathy").

The snake is yellow. It seems to be like Jack, as golden as his eyes. Jack is, after all, the chicken (human) and the snake (angel/Seraph).

The snake is a key divinity symbol and is linked to immortality. The Garden is Earth (the chicken), and it's the generator that grows the soul.

Like the figure of the Girl (Hokmah?), the snake in the garden and his fruit/pomegranate/"apple" are associated with Truth and Wisdom. There's something Ecclesiastical with this, too--that Wisdom brings pain.

Then, we get these flashes as Jack's soul regenerates. My question for you (and for everyone) is a deep dive on why these images in particular? Aren't they interesting?

Like Sam in season 8, we have Jack's forgiveness associated with a Church, a symbol of Forgiveness.

Occultus simply means, "hidden away; secret."

We have this hidden Garden referred to by Cas as a crossroads of humanity and divinity, something specifically disallowed by God.

(According to Heaven's oldest laws, Heaven and Earth aren't allowed to mix together, but Jack is a Nephilim. He is the result of humanity and divinity mixing. He represents the ultimate disobedience; an abomination; imperfection.)

Another oddity to me is that The Occultum is wrapped in an Enochian riddle, as if it's meant for angels in particular. How strange...

Then, we see Jack retaking his place at the kitchen table and feeling the weight of all that pain.

What's this all about? Why did this Occultum thingy and the Garden regenerate Jack's soul? Was it all about Wisdom, about asking questions and truly facing the Awful Truth head-on?

Why didn't I understand? It was my fault. Forgive me.

Perhaps as a Nephilim, given enough time, Jack can repair his own soul the same way he was supposed to be able to slowly recharge his grace over hundreds/thousands of years.

After all, angels can "cleanse" damaged Hell souls via their grace (see: Dean's Hell rescue), and Souls can "charge up" injured angel grace (see: Bobby's "nuclear reactor" soul in season 6). Tragically, Heaven and Earth seem built to naturally complement one another.

Perhaps, that's why the mixing of the two is so dangerous.

the line you put with heaven and earth being natural and tragic compliments is causing me pain.

and i did notice this back when it aired but: so much of the flashes have dean in them. it is such an important note to me because of the end of 13x02 and all of 14x20. dean is what jack viewed as the ultimate form of being a human being. your free will makes you make mistakes and he forgives dean for it. i think getting his soul back was in part answering a question of what it meant to be human too. dean was his answer.

dean, sam, cas, and everything he has ever done wrong is what makes him a crossroads of divine and human. free will makes him both and neither. he is both and neither because he is just supposed to be jack. something new. something unheard of living long. all the other nephilim are dead. he lives despite everything against him.

and you pose such an interesting thing! I do think maybe if the circumstances were far different we could have seen jack replenishing his soul himself. after all, nephilim really are supposed to be a whole new level of power. jack is also the son of an archangel and i know it had to have give him even more of an edge to the nephilim who were simply the children of angels.

i am feeling particularly insane about this so let me add on:

sometimes, i wonder what chuck was really thinking. it's so hard to know with him. i do think he did care for the angels. lucifer was his favorite, of course, but he did offer bringing back michael what he loved. he doesn't seem to be as close to gabriel and raphael but i wonder.

was the occultum meant for them? was he trying to see if he would end up fixing one of his big four children?

rebelling, like i put in the last ask, seems to just go so damn poorly for the angels. i wonder if going to the garden or something for them would have ended up with them with human souls but still angels. it would be such a fucked up form of being a nephilim that i can see chuck having done it.

i wonder if he hoped one of them would have found it. i wonder if none of them found it because they were still just too divine in the long run. i think the closest we got to divine human was castiel, but even he didn't end up happy. maybe jack could have been the divine human if they hadn't gone for the ending they did, actually.

Do you have any ideas for the Occultum being the safest place, and Jack eating it? The specter of cannibalism hovers throughout his arc, and even in season 15 we see him eating angel hearts. Then, he eats "the safest place in the world," and regrows a soul.

To be in the Occultum, the Occultum must be in you. -> To be in "the safest place in the world," the "safest place in the world" must be in you.

His pulse was matching the bass that was booming through the speakers and echoing off the walls. It was new, exciting, and at the same time a little claustrophobic to stand in such a crowd full of costumed strangers. But he promised himself to at least try to blend in and experience events that were somewhat normal to others. This Ball combined his first ever Halloween celebration with his first ever costume party and while he was, admittedly, amazed by the whole event, he was interested to find out what the whole fuss was about. 

Up until now, it wasn’t exactly as magical as everybody seemed to believe it was. At least not to him. That might be, though, because his mask not only shielded his identity but also due to the fact that he knew nobody and made no effort to change that beforehand. Maxim was satisfied with his costume. With his disguise as a plague doctor, he not only portrayed something morbid but also, conveniently, shielded his face just in case anybody was planning on talking to him. Only when he looked away from the people on the dance floor and over to the beverages displayed on the table, the demigod realized that he was getting thirsty. 

It was almost like a dance itself, maneuvering around the people to get to his destination with as little contact as possible. But anybody who danced regularly would know, that even the smallest misstep could ruin everything. As he made his way around a particular big group of people, Maxim felt his body hit something. Hard. Or better said—someone. It might have been his fault or it might have not been, with the mask on, he wasn’t entirely sure who was responsible for this. All he knew was that he felt surprisingly frustrated to be thrown off his rhythm. “What the hell? Watch where you’re going.”

Since you‘ve been into the fandom space due to hxh and jjk…

Which is very valid btw, sometimes it’s takes a while to jump into a community, especially since fandoms are such a mixed bag.

…Have you made some friends/mutuals that you never expected to be friends/mutuals with?

When I joined the HxH fandom was quite insular. There were some very visible big name fans who just engaged with one another. And when you look at fic recs here for HxH you still get the echos of that. You will see certain names repeated over and over again. Actually having someone rec my fics recently made me cry because if my friend Subdee wasn't on a given day on tumblr often when I posted my writing here no one would even leave like on it. I had mutuals literally scroll past my writing and reblog from me fics or ao3 links authored by the popular HxH and not even leave a courtesy like on my fic that was posted around the same time as the reblog.

And this was the situation several years after I joined. For a long time I felt I won't make any friends in the fandom. I actually made my first friends in the fandom when I participated in 2018 HxH big bang. After that event I befriended some people, and I even became acquaintances with some of the popular HxH blogs, even mutuals with some. So yeah, all the friends I made in the fandom were unexpected.

And honestly the HxH fandom here on tumblr is really cool and that's mostly thanks to @shalnarkonice who's the true hero of the fandom. Shal runs the hxhbbs, reverse bb, several other events and a thriving discord server, we made a zine together as in I pitched the idea to Shal and she just fucking put a team together. I had never expected that I would do a huge year long project with Shal. But generally Shal probably brings at least half the fans here together, facilitates so many friendships. HxH fandom really lucked out that it has Shal.

In the JJK fandom on the other hand I hadn't expected to make any friends because the JJK fandom is a fucking dumpster fire, generally, and here in particular, though from what I've heart twitter is worse. Compared to HxH which is a fandom in hibernation, JJK is alive and vibrant. But unlike the HxH fandom, it's full of people who hate read the manga, people who are in the fandom to shit on it, to post their bad faith takes. Or people who just want to write that they don't understand what's going on, lol. Or sometimes just write takes to prove that they really didn't pay attention to anything in the manga. Or just post thirst, and like.. I like some thirst, like this nice dessert to the fandom experience. In JJK it's the main course and it's just too much for me. And there is some art, but mostly of characters I care little about. And it's completely disorganised, there is not Shal who gives the fandom structure so that you can engage with others at this low emotional stakes level by just doing stuff next to each other in an event and get closer if you notice that you vibe together.

No, you have to do direct engagement and that's scary. But I found amazing people in it too. There's cursedvibes and his meta is so good, actually he's my subdee in the JJK fandom. They are both meta royalty plus they are just super neat to talk to in private about anything and everything. I also befriended the wonderful yuujispinkhair, and this is very much wow.

sounds like you have medical trauma, which is actually a separate issue. i wasn't trying to be an ass, i genuinely like your meta and i like coming on your blog to see it. I just don't always tag my wincest, and I don't want to get blocked because of that.

I honestly don't know how to answer this.

(A) Issues overlap and influence one another, and whether or not my "trauma" is "understandable" or "severe enough" or "on topic enough" or whatever don't really factor here. I have a boundary. That boundary might be drawn for Serious Reasons or it might simply be that I Find The Thing Annoying. Both are Good Enough (TM).

(B) I get not tagging. I have trouble tagging, too. (Attention issues, fatigue, exhaustion, etc.). The difference here is, I'm good with whoever blocking me, even if it's just "OMG SHAL I CAN'T STAND YOU TODAY." It can be 'cause of random crap or mis-tagging or not tagging or even "I hate the Kentucky Derby" and "Gross, you like sports!"

(C) For issues like this you're going to have to decide if it's worth taking the time to tag or just eat the risk of me blocking you. Honestly, I might block you anyway, depending on how I'm feeling that day.

My Journey to Brain-rot, or It Took Me Three Views to “Get” Reservoir Dogs.

Similar to my main blog, where I described my tale as a Supernatural fan, first casual then wanting something more, something a lot gayer, only to be delighted that the answer’s been under my nose the whole time. Very similar story.

I’m going to recap from memory my first three viewings of the 1992 classic. So:

1st viewing: I was probably 12. Pretty sure I’d rented it from Blockbuster. Yes, this was in the 2000’s, no, I don’t expect you to believe me. Not the watching violent movies at twelve part, but the whole “you know what a Blockbuster is?” Point being, I really liked Kill Bill, and figured this would be no different. Problem is, I’m terrible with names. Like, can’t name a relative of mine if we’re not that close, even if Mom’s told me five minutes ago. How do you think I fared with a movie of white guys dressed the same way with similar dialogue? Not well, and I wasn’t impressed. Promptly forgot about the movie, its plot, its characters, its twist, all of it.

In the years that followed, and having enjoyed the likes of Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Bastards, I decide, at about 17? I wanna say? to give Reservoir Dogs another shot. 

2nd viewing: It’s like my mind’s been wiped, have no recollection of this fucking film. Had zero expectations, but there was one important difference at this time, and where it crosses over with my experience with Supernatural: I’d been craving some gay shit. That good ol’ MLM. Only at this point, I had zero tools in my media literacy belt, and had to go by gut feeling. You know, when you watch or read something, and you get that funny feeling in your gut that it’s really quite queer, and you’re not instantly sure if you’re into it. That was me when I saw Tim Roth screaming his head off and the older guy holding his hand, comforting him. Literally nothing else in the movie held my interest the way these two’s bullshit did. Every moment they weren’t on screen being the definition of hurt/comfort was like losing the heart of the story.

Too long later, to March of this year, at 25 years old. I see someone who’s movie reactions I like has also reacted to this film, and I instantly think ‘oh yeah, the one where those two characters are really homoerotic’. Watch this 40 minute reaction, and am stunned at how it’s not only still really fucking gay, but queerer than I remembered. Late at night, done with the video, and I’m like “I need to rewatch this movie now.”

3rd viewing: glued to my seat, absolutely enthralled with this fucking movie. The brain-rot has properly set in. This is my life now. I wonder how more people don’t talk about this movie as the queer masterpiece that it is. I’m cursed with the sight, and cannot express what haunts me. A week later, I realize, to both my delight and horror, that Supernatural has done an episode of this in season 12. I mean, straight up, a Tarantino tribute to specifically Reservoir Dogs, that’s also known as one of the best Destiel episodes of the series, and blatantly foreshadows characters betraying their love interest in the season finale. Listen, I didn’t start writing SPN meta until season 13, I never even considered that the source material was equally as gay. Just, this revelation both fascinated and confounded me, but provided me with another comfort; I’m not alone in recognizing how ridiculously queer this movie is, and that professional writers got paid to make what amounts to crossover fanfiction.

So, to go from being unimpressed at 12 to obsessed at 25. God, I love movies.

Reservoir Dogs is truly one of those movies that is more rewarding the more you watch it. Makes me wish there were more videos of people online rewatching movies with a twist, or to be able to take a deeper dive into a story and not be lost from trying to absorb all the details and characters and plot-points for the first time.

That's it. Now I'm stuck here with maybe a dozen fanfic plots in my noggin. I shall never know peace.

absurd Solas meta

my basic theory about Solas is that he is spirit made flesh: Mythal needed a general, so she made one. She bound the reflection of her pride in her people and her empire in the flesh of her own child, like she taught Morrigan. She had a child with one of her slaves and left the baby in his custody.

this is where we go into full headcanon territory:

That man’s name was Lahtaras, from the artisan caste of Elvhenan, bound to Mythal. He was a sculptor, though of course accomplished in all the pictorial arts, and Mythal chose him for his ability to show the flexibility in hard, malleable stone. She wanted a man who could take the complex and simplify its form, who could take the unbroken spirit and show it its own flexibility, to raise what she assumed would become her most important vassal. And, very simply, she liked the look of him. And he never quite had a choice, did he?

But Lahtaras loved his son. He left Arlathan for the quiet village where he was born, in the Durgas Durgen’len, where Mythal first established her sovereignty over the dwarves, and raised his child in the quiet woods. And he taught the child, so easily bored and dissatisfied, what he could: how to take the complex and break it down to its simplest shapes, how to take stone and make it breathe, how to lose oneself in the beauty of the world and try to reflect it. And Solas took the lesson to heart.

When Elgarnan’s war against the Sun reached Durgas Durgen’len, Lahtaras took his son and fled back to Arlathan City. For Solas, mischievous and cheerful by nature, traveling through the battlefields permanently sobered him as he finally understood the fragility of his position in the hierarchy in Arlathan. In his hometown, he was the brilliant child of an imperial artist, slave or not--and no one would raise their hand against a bastard of the All-Mother. Outside of their village, he was nothing, his father was nothing, and after watching the brutality of the war and the dull grating of their life of servitude in Mythal’s court in Arlathan, Solas swore to free himself and his father from this. He would never submit.

And there was always a war to shake things up. Fen’Harel, Fen’Haril, he liked the joke. But when the Ghilain’nain’s experiments on the shal-brytol turned red, Solas was deeply disturbed by Mythal’s reaction. The Titans used them, why shouldn’t them? And the red lyrium made them more malleable than the blue--until it jumped to the elvhen slaves working in the mines. Against Mythal’s wishes, he sealed the section of the Deep Roads where the Blight came from. Mythal was displeased, but covered for him--to her downfall. And when she fell, he rose.

When the Evanuris murdered Mythal for refusing to unseal the Abyss, Solas and his Opposition permanently broke from the political fabric of Arlathan and began their revolution. Lahtaras, of course, was proud, and very afraid. Mythal was the last thing protecting him from the vengeful gods, and Elgarnan had him quietly killed in his own studio. Solas was told he should be grateful that it was quick and relatively painless. That was almost worse that finding out his father was dead--that he should be glad the end wasn’t brutal. That he should be glad that the god of Vengeance was merciful.

Arrogant, hot-tempered, proud like his mother. Compassionate, sensitive, gentle like his father. Mythal had chosen well. She wanted to make Pride that could survive the Humbling, that would bend, not break. Whether Solas can survive being humbled--by the catastrophe that was the Veil, by the Inquisitor, by the grace his companions like Felassan, Iron Bull, and Cassandra have shown him--remains to be seen.

I was saying this on another’s user’s post, and I don’t have all of it set in my head, but I wanted to share it here, too, in case someone can put it into words better than me.

I think Dean's guilt and rumination specifically call it to narrative attention. The consequence? It gets cemented into the minds of viewers, even when that guilt is misplaced. I think that’s why rewatching can be so surprising! Sam’s revisionism…tends to stick.

When Dean beats Cas in season 10, he ruminates on it. He sees a bloody Cas in the mirror. But when Cas beats Dean in season 5 & 8, we don't see Cas ruminate and agonize over it as much. I know Cas has a flashback about his attack dog spell in season 11, but I can’t recall its specifics. In any case, it doesn’t happen on the first two.

Sam, on the other hand, ruminates on impurity and imperfection—inherent things—so he doesn’t seem to examine his actions as much on screen. If memory serves, after he sacrifices Oskar and unleashes the Darkness, he’s back to lecturing Dean in the very next episode.

It’s like how politicians say, “never apologize,” because that “psychologically associates you to guilty in the minds of the people.”

Sam seems willing to shoulder more action-oriented guilt as he gets older, and it seems to improve a lot after Mary returns.

Like with Cas, re: unleashing Lucifer, I think Sam is far more culpable for that than his quippy, feisty I’m-not-your-bitch speech would lead you to believe (he moved them to a strategical weak spot, and he acknowledges it). But sometimes he carries this too far, making things a group sin when he’s far more culpable than he’d like.

Like with Dean and the MoC, Sam starts to realize that putting yourself in danger, affects your loved ones, like it or not.

Sam, Dean & Cas + benefit of the doubt

Still, we tend to assume Sam and Cas feel guilt and sadness, even when we don’t see it onscreen. We give them the benefit of the doubt, even when they could be assumed to be cold.

On the flipside, when we don’t see Dean’s grief and reaction on screen, we sometimes jump to assume uncharitably that he must not be doing the emotions. It’s an odd dynamic in the fandom, because we’ve seen Dean’s emotions with respect to specific actions most often.

I think it has something to do with the expectation for him to do emotional caretaking, both in holding the onscreen family together and for the cathartic benefit of the audience.

Picking your brain about Jack stuff (1 of 2)!

Thoughts on the little girl in the Occultum re:Jack regaining his soul? I've been so fascinated by her. First, she reminds me a little bit of young Kelly when Jack first visits Kelly in Heaven.

But overall, she's something that niggles me and I can't quite pin down. She chirpily tells Jack, "Oh, you must not be human. Humans cannot enter here," and then she asks, "Are you an angel?" She seems so excited!

Since the Occultum houses the Garden, the obvious answer could be something symbolic of Eve as the snake that appears is symbolic of Lucifer. But her words to Jack seem to imply she's not human, so she's not a perfect fit for a human Eve.

(My immediate thought was of an entity called Chokmah/Hokmah, who sometimes gets reimagined as an ancient mother-goddess but more appropriately translates to a personification of wisdom, or Lady Wisdom. Peter Penchansky even argues for Hokmah as God's daughter who played in the garden as Yahweh created the world.)

On the other hand, she also looks a bit like the primordial Leviathan!Eve in manner of her dress, so perhaps she is meant to be another Eve. A different symbolic Eve, as well as a callback to Kelly.

i truly love the interpretation of that little girl being chokmah, especially with the whole thing being that questioning is what kicked humanity out of the garden.

i have a lot of thoughts about angels and humans, especially with all of what lucifer says throughout show. even the simple lines between lucifer and michael in swan song get to me in some way. the angels, as we see, are programmed to follow a set of orders that god (chuck) had given out a long time ago. several angels throughout the series break free of these orders and gain the idea of free will.

i think if this little girl truly is representing chokmah, her looking like a younger eve was also intentional. eve ate the apple. lucifer let the snake in. gadreel trusted lucifer. etc etc.

maybe in a way she decided to appear in that form to jack because angels and humans intermingling? not really seen. nephilim are always killed and while every angel says it's for their power, i do think there's another factor.

it's the fact that nephilim being human and angel means they cannot be programmed to fully follow the command of heaven. they can't become a weapon of god so he tossed them all aside. the angels are meant to follow orders and whenever an angel does rebel it.. goes so poorly for them

lucifer is stuck in the cage for. ages. anna has a Lot going on and ends up killed for what she does. castiel is never actually happy and the minute he is happy he dies. michael loses the One human who changed his outlook on everything.

i gotta answer your second ask still but my whole point maybe she's happy seeing an angel in jack because maybe jack is the one angel she knows who Could rebel and still be happy after (we're ignoring the finale).

I remember you mentioned a while back that you rarely made any online friends who are artists. You stated that you made four, three from the HxH fandom and one in JJK. The thing that intrigues me the most is the statement of you most likely won’t be able to befriend another artist within the JJK fandom in such low stakes condition. I was wondering what you possibly meant by that, and was hoping for a possible clarification or explanation. Although I can see where you are coming from, the JJK fandom is extremely… active in comparison to the HxH fandom. Additionally, I do wonder how did you befriended this JJK artist in the first place.

I don't remember how I phrased the low stakes thing. Maybe I was confusing and rambly when I wrote about it. I'll try to write it out clearly but it will take some background.

Despite the HxH fandom being small, much smaller than JJK, it's actually pretty active. But most of all it has Shal, I tagged Shal recently in one of my answers so I won't do it again, not to bother her.

Shal isn't the only person who's active like that in the HxH fandom but she's like a staple of the HxH fandom, someone who the fandom owes a lot to, probably the most to. Shal and her kin are community organisers. For years, like fucking clockwork, Shal has successfully run several HxH annual events. Shal runs a very chill and active HxH fandom server called Greed Island Server. If you look at HxH posts you will see that many of them mention that server. There's a blog on here called HxH events that aggregates and promotes HxH events.

My theory is that, because of Shal's achievements there are also many other HxH events going on here without Shal.

This lowers the bar of entry into the HxH community here, makes it low stakes.

Most events have discords. In a general discord it's sometimes hard to jump into the convo, hard to say something. In an event discord it's easy to interact, talk about the event. Talk about the stuff you're doing for the event. Discuss ideas. The topics are clear. Also many people join these events and some of them are there for the first time, some are veterans. The newbies will ask questions about how it works, the veterans will answer. Clear topic, clear interaction purpose. Also in the servers it's rarely directly to a particular person. At least initially. That also lowers the stakes. Someone starts a topic and others join in or they don't but there's enough people so there likely be some response, not radio silence.

And once it gets going you can make friends. You may find you click with some of these people. You may go to the dms and talk about other stuff. (though no guarantees, this is not a promise that the moment you join an event you will make deep and meaningful connections. doing that will improve your chances, that's it.)

As far as I've noticed JJK has nothing of the sort. There are some popular accounts, some popular writers, artists, meta writers, popular aggressive clout chasers with their cold takes. You will have all of that in the HxH fandom, the good, the bad, the irritating.

But because there are no events to interact with people in the JJK fandom you have to do it here. You have to either be a mean fuck like me and give little shits and just comment on posts in notes, tags or reblogs. You need to send asks off anon. It requires putting yourself out there in a situation where you don't know whether the person, and it will always be one on one, wants the interaction. Any interaction at all or just on this particular topic.

JJK fandom is active like a big city centre. There's a lot of people around, some are in groups, most are there on their own. Most people are going somewhere. It's hard to come up to someone and start a conversation.

HxH fandom is active more like fair, it's smaller but people come there to do stuff together. They may not know each other but they are open to having fun together at the same time. (it's not ideal, there are shit people, I'm not romaticising)

Re getting to know the artist. It was one of the weirdest things that happened in my life, it was stressful and a bad idea and bad choices on my part that turned out surprisingly ok. I don't feel like revisiting it in detail anymore. It's also not something I'd advise anyone to do. In normal circumstances I would've got blocked because I was a dick.
