has anyone thought about the diegesis of music in bollywood/south asian masala movies? there's no doubt that it functions differently than in western musicals... but HOW exactly? in most western musical theatre the music seems to non-diegetic (as in, the characters and those around them are unaware that they are singing) unless it is a performance, then it is diegetic/source music (they are singing in the story- everyone knows they're singing).
perhaps the difference comes from the fact that masala movies are movies first and (to my knowledge) are often not adapted from musical stage productions (though the movies CAN be adapted into musicals in the case of mughal-e-azam, hum aapke hain koun, and dilwale dulhania le jayenge). but in masala movies the line between "this is a performance in the story" and "i am singing to express my feelings" seems somewhat blurred. Señorita from ZNMD is a performance, they are singing, everyone knows it. Bum Bum Bole from Taare Zameen Par, they're singing, Aamir Khan is a funny little dude singing a funky clown song. But then what about Kashmiri Main Tu Kanyakumari from Chennai Express? Singing in a car... okay, that's a performance! But the choreographed dance number? Is that happening or is it symbolizing their journey across India? Mere Khwabon Mein from DDLJ is definitely (probably?) Simran expressing her dreams and such, and she's not singing in universe. But then what about Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna? Raj singing at Simran would make sense as a performance at a mehndi, but what about Simran singing back?
OH and since the popularity of film/musical songs works differently in South Asia than it does in the States... how does continuity work in that? Such as the medley from Mujhse Dosti Karoge, in which Hrithik's character sings Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Rani's character... does this mean that KKHH exists in this universe?? Does Rani Mukherjee the actress then exist in this universe and her character in this movie have a doppleganger?? What about all of Shahrukh Khan's movies... especially with the antakshari scenes in Chennai Express? Does Om Shanti Om exist in that universe? Does SRK the actor exist? If not then how did these songs come about? Is it similar to the NSU (Nickelodeon Sitcom Universe) in which there are gray parts of one's mind when it comes to crossover events? This FASCINATES me to no end you don't understand.
side note. i want to see someone that has directed a masala movie tackle one of these american musical to movie adaptations. no more tom hooper. i want farah khan or karan johar or ss rajamouli to direct cats and see how THAT looks. if tom hooper had directed k3g it would not have been as fantastical (such as the "my son is here" super sense) as it was.
let american movie musicals have as much fun as south asian masala films do.
there seem to be some (paywalled) academic papers on the matter but it'd be interesting to hear anyone's thoughts on it!

Day 1: Strawberries
I'm doing it, yeah. We'll see if I'll be doing all prompts but I sure am doing this one

Red, juicy, and scrumptious, in other words a perfect job well done meal. As such, Vinnie reached for more. However, apparently his eating was sloppy, because as Minka appeared back in the room entry with her hands behind her back, her wide smile fell a bit.
“Jeez, it's a mess in here! You're a mess too!” She pointed wildly, mostly at Vinnie's face, but the red substance was in even more places on her friend.
“I know, I know… but hey, you're not spotless either,” Vinnie observed continuing his meal after a gooey sound could be heard. Minka was red in quite a few places too, though he had to admit that her face was clean. For now at least, he had a feeling it would change soon.
“Nothing new,” She sang sung. “We'll clean it later.”
“Yeah,” Vinnie mumbled as he swallowed. “So, whatcha got there?” He leaned to the side putting more of his weight on his hands while stretching his neck.
“A surprise.” Minka entered the room while still meticulously hiding whatever she was holding behind her back and sat down before finally revealing the items. “Tada!”
“Strawberries?” Vinnie raised his brow. “Not bad, but I already have my food.”
“No, silly, look!” Minka took one of the little red fruits and dipped it in the gash before them. After circling it a few times she carefully pulled it out, the strawberry now fully coated in blood.
“Ohhh, so it's like dipping!” Vinnie beamed. “And you're saying it's better than just blood?”
“Eeexactly.” Minka threw the strawberry in the air, it skilfully landing in her mouth no more than a second later. “It's really good, you should try it,” She encouraged.
“Don't mind if I do.” Vinnie reached for the fruit and repeated his friend's actions with it. “Dang it’” He cursed once it landed on the floor instead of in his mouth.
“Careful with that, don't waste my previous paint.”
“Yeeeah, I know, no more throwing,” He promised before putting the strawberry in his mouth manually and biting on it.
“So, how is it?” Minka asked expectantly, leaning a bit towards him.
“Hmm.” Vinnie carefully measured each bite and let his palate decide. The taste sure was new, but the combination of the metallic and sweet was surprisingly… good! “I like it.” Minka nodded approvingly as they both continued.
Reach, grab, dip, bite, chew, they went until the plate was empty.
“Satisfied?” Minka asked after a moment filled with contented sighs.
“Yup. You can do your thing now.”
“Awesome.” Minka stood up and bent down, putting her hands inside the wounds. They came out red after a while and she quickly skipped towards the canvas, the blood soon landing on the white material. “This will be my best painting yet!”
Vinnie nodded energetically at her declaration; he was sure if would be.
He got his food, Minka got her paint, everything was good in the world.
Vinnie stole a glance at Shahrukh.
Well, alright, Bollywood might have lost one of its more popular actors and some fans might be left disappointed.
If only he was better to their friends, if only he was nicer to Sunil.

HI everyone, this is a story that I came up with after four years of not writing. I can't believe I am back to writing again, and I'm happy to be. I missed my secret world that I could just jump into and escape reality for awhile. I work at a hospital now and i'm mostly nights so me being a night person, writing is slowly coming back. What is it that you like about Russell and sharukuh as a ship/ pair?
That. Is a really good question actually. Lucky you, you get both admins responses!
Hunter Answer: What I like the most about ShaRuss as a romantic pairing is how. Impossible it is? Crackships are less common nowadays, and within the confines of LPS2012 proper, Russell x Shahrukh would make no damn sense, and still kinda wouldn't? They don't parallel eachother as well as Sunil/Shahrukh and I think Rusty actively hates Shahrukh. Real enemies to lovers.
But that's what makes it so enjoyable. No matter which guy falls for who, it's so interesting to think about. Shahrukh falling in love for a mere pet peasant, someone so. Average and boring and nerdy and dorky, it's unheard of, but damn does he fall hard. And now he has to cope with the fact that he's a famous celebrity in love with some fuckin. GUY. Unextraordinary average man.
And flipping that around to the hypothetical if Russell fell in love with Shahrukh, it's irony at its finest. "Ugh THAT guy? I'd rather be caught dead than be interested in him." And then like clockwork, Russell realizes "Oh Shit." and is so angry and spiteful and so damn gay for that celebrity asshole. And he can't do shit about it lmaoo. It's just really appealing. Resenting the other person so much you find what you hate about them appealing and falling in love and. Christ. It's good. Good food. I love the idiots.
Karina Answer: Kind of similar to Hunter's answer, it's the impossibility of their relationship but the ever so popular expanding upon it. Shahrukh as a character already is very. One note. Yeah he's basically a parody of a famous Indian actor, but, I wanted him to have depth. So. I traumatized him :3
I wanted to expand upon WHY he's like that. No way was some stuck up movie star a spoiled asshole for the sake of it, nah nah nah, he's gotta have a REASON for it. So, I uh. Dove into the child exploitation and abuse of child actors and how they grow up to be resentful of their position and wanting to be more than just a face on a screen. I won't go too into detail because I want the askblog to be the gateway for lore, but that's the general gist. Maybe he's a snarky asshole because he's filled with resentment for the life he was forced into, and projects onto other people, y'know, vaguely gestures towards Russell.
In Shahrukh's eyes, Russell is the epitome of "Got it good". What he doesn't know, is that, Russell parallels him quite a bit. The whole parents not accepting him for who he is and forcing him to be something he's not. Even if he's being a jerkwad to Russ, Russ offers kindness even if it bites him back.
It's really just all about connecting two "opposites attract" thing but putting a spin on it to where they both grew up with the same situation but "grew" from it in different ways. Shahrukh became bitter and hateful due to his trauma, and Russell, while not fully healed from his trauma, is open and kind and patient. I hope my answer suffices! God I can write a whole essay on these guys but I think I already did. (And if it doesn't count, it'd still be hard to write one without spoiling things-)

“And…. Cut!” the director yelled. A ripple of relief ran through the crowd of dancers, and Adrien stepped away from his partner, already scanning the area for Marinette. He’d tried his hardest to persuade her to join him as an extra background dancer but no amount of wheedling on his part had changed her mind and she had opted to be a dedicated member of the costume department instead.
Now if he could just find her…weaving through the crowd, Adrien pulled out his phone to see if she had sent him a message and so didn’t see who he was about to bump into before it was too late.
“Oof-!” stumbling backwards, Adrien swallowed the irritated quip rising in his throat as he caught sight of the man in front of him.
Shahrukh Khan.
“Ohmygod, I am so sorry!” Adrien exclaimed “I wasn’t watching where I was going but that's no excuse, are you alr–”
Shahrukh cut him off with a laugh. “Arre, aise hota hai, no need to apologise.” Taking off his sunglasses, he frowned for a moment before recognition lit his features. “You’re one of Aryan’s friends, na? From university?”
Adrien could only stare, dumbstruck. Lifting one shoulder in a half shrug, Adrien replied “uh…we were only classmates, really.”
“Haan, haan,” Shahrukh waved a hand dismissively. “I saw you at his graduation. You’re the…model na? France se?”
Adrien nodded. Before he could say anything else, he was almost bowled over once more, saved only by the small hands grabbing hold of his arms and steadying him before he could fall to the floor.
“There you are, Adrien!” Marinette exclaimed. “I was looking everywhere for you, come on let’s go get lunch–” she trailed off, inhaling sharply as she realised just who Adrien was talking to. Her grip tightened on his arm. “H-hi sir!” she managed to squeak out.
Shahrukh grinned. “Call me Shahrukh.” He turned to Adrien. “Your girlfriend?”
“ What-”
“Noo!”
They both spluttered at the same time, flushing red. “Adrien is just my…” Marinette hesitated for a brief second before continuing “Adrien is just my good friend.” She didn’t seem to notice the way he winced at the words as she turned to him, avoiding his gaze. “I’m just…go grab my bag. Meet me by the trailers?”
She didn’t wait for a response before practically running off in the opposite direction. If she had gone any faster, there would have been a trail of smoke behind her.
“Pasand karte ho usse?” “Do you like her?”
Adrien blinked. At his blank stare, Shahrukh went on “sorry, sorry…Hindi aati hai?” “sorry, sorry…do you know Hindi?”
“A little, yeah.” Adrien sighed “but the thing with Marinette, it’s uh…complicated.”
Complicated was an understatement.
How could he explain that they were a superhero duo who had been partners for six years, who had seen the best and worst of each other, and survived. Who had mutually chosen long ago not to pursue a relationship until their duties were complete, and now that they were…
Well Marinette had yet to bring the subject up, and Adrien was loath to risk damaging the dynamic they had together. He’d settle for being nothing more than a friend if it meant he could stay by her side forever.
But he couldn’t really tell Shahrukh Khan that. The man was looking at him with a bemused expression, a smile curling at his lips. With his hands shoved in his pockets, the actor looked effortlessly relaxed. If he hadn’t been on set with him all morning, Adrien wouldn’t have guessed that he’d spent hours and hours working up a sweat dancing under the blazing sun.
“Na,” Shahrukh shook his head, breaking Adrien out of his thoughts. "Dil kabhi complicated nahi hota. Haan, halaat ho sakte hai, lekin wo itni jaldi badalte hai ke dil ke mamle mein sirf halaat ko nahi dekhna chahiye. Rishte itne hi complicated hote hai jitna tum banao.”
“The heart is never complicated. Yes, circumstances can be, but they change so quickly that in matters of the heart they shouldn’t be the only thing to look at.Relationships are only as complicated as you make them.”
“Kal Ho Naa Ho, Om Shanti Om ne kuch bhi nahi sikhaya? Waqt ko zaya na karo, dil ki baat bahar nikalo yaar.” “Didn’t Kal Ho Naa Ho, or Om Shanti Om teach you anything? Don’t waste time, take out what's in your heart, my friend.”
He laughed then, and nodded at something over Adriens shoulder. “Jao. Woh dekh rahi hai tujhe.” “Go. She’s looking at you.”

Adrien was distracted during his lunch with Marinette, turning Shahrukh’s words over and over in his head. Of all the things he’d expected to happen today, getting relationship advice had been at the bottom of the list, but now that he’d gotten it, he couldn’t stop thinking about it.
As they walked back to the set, Marinette twined their fingers together, swinging their hands gently between them. The action emboldened him, and Adrien cleared his throat quietly. “Um…Marinette?”
“Yes?” She stopped, turning to face him curiously.
Adrien hesitated. Was he really going to do this? He'd held off from saying anything for so long, determined to let Marinette decide when and if she wanted to try dating him, but…
He licked his lips. “I wanted to ask you something.”
“I’m not dancing, Adrien! It’s not happening.”
A startled laugh escaped him at her words and he shook his head, snickering. “No, no, it’s not about that.”
“Oh? What is it then?”
This was it. Now or never.
"Doyouwanttogoonadatewithme?" Adrien blurted out in a rush. He took a deep breath. "That is...I-"
Marinette’s eyes widened, her mouth dropping open in shock. Quickly, Adrien began to backpedal, holding up his hands."Uh, obviously it's totally okay if you don't want to, i completely understand and I'll never ask again–"
And then Marinette grinned, wide and happy, stunning Adrien into silence. Surging forward, she enveloped him in a hug, squeezing him tightly. For a long moment, Adrien only stood there, too surprised to move until eventually, he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close.
After what felt like an eternity, Marinette drew back just enough to gaze into his eyes, her own glittering with joy. “Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you to ask me out? I was really worried for a while there.”
"What?!”

Marinette didn’t let go of his hand until they got back to set, and even then, they stood together as his makeup and hair got touched up, the two of them sneaking glances at each other, cheeks flushing when they got caught.
He’d never felt so delighted in his life, so happy and full of energy. He could dance all night and not get tired. Finally, when it was time to get in position, Marinette extricated herself from his side reluctantly. Immediately he felt the loss and couldn’t help but grab her by the wrist, stopping her for a moment.
“I’ll see you later,” Adrien murmured as she looked back at him. Impulsively, he leaned in, and pressed a kiss to her forehead, feeling a thrill go through him at the contact. From Marinette’s dazed expression, she had felt it as well.
“Okay,” she whispered, covering her flushed cheeks with her hands before disappearing into the crowd. Adrien watched her go until she was out of sight, and only then did he notice Shahrukh standing by the fountain in the middle of the square.
Raising his eyebrows, the actor’s question was clear. Adrien couldn’t help the goofy grin that spread across his face, raising his hand to give a thumbs up.

"Day 225"
Today I've watched Mr. Rajat Sharma's show on India Tv ....and today he was recalling about his memories with celebrities whom he invited for Aap ki Adalat show...in that he spoke about many actors like...Salman Khan, Rajesh Khanna, Sunny Deol, Dharmendra ji, but the most interesting 🤔 people I found were Shahrukh Khan sir and Dilip Kumar sir....as in...he said..
He first met SRK by chance on airport...then he came to him and start talking about some lady cleaning the floor..them in flight also he talked to me about some interesting topics and we became friends and when leaving from airport in his car he said he is my driver now but before me he was driver of Mr. Rajesh Khanna and this car of mine is also of Mr. Khanna... I want to come in your show Aap ki Adalat and I want some more people to know me because I want to be a superstar like Mr. Rajesh Khanna...and then I (Rajat sir)...called him on his show...
This whole thing made me feel like.... here I learnt some things...no literally...he did a lot of things...like really.. hmm🧐🤔🤔...
Then my favourite Mr. Dilip sir...he said that Dilip sir discussed a lot about the show with him but they were never able to record it... because the discussion never ended..😂😂...❤️✨...

★ Pathaan and The SUPERSTARS Of Indian Cinema!

Pathaan has smashed records at the box office and it should put into no doubt who are the superstars of INDIA are. The film confirms the box office clout of Shahrukh Khan which had not gone anywhere despite the last decade not being as kind as the decade before. There was a box office change towards the end of 2000-2010 decade where digital prints allowed far wider releases on day one and as this process got bigger and bigger it meant the genre which was the forte of Shahrukh Khan was never going to get record numbers. But through the 2010-2020 decade the numbers coming with films which were not action films were still huge.
Pathaan had a guest role for Salman Khan and the public response has to seen to be believed and this should be enough for the naysayers who have appreaed due to his last few films not doing as well as expected. Stardom does not dissapear with a few films failing at the box office, just like it does not come overnight and takes many films to establish.
The Hindi film industry is probably the most secular place there is in India but the fact that the biggest stars of India over the last two decades are Muslim has not sat well in some quarters of the country and the media over the last few years. In fact the third biggest also with Aamir Khan though this is arguable with Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar in the fold as well. The cinema going audience does not care one bit about religion and within the industry nobody notices the religion baring when things get bought up from the outside. There are these non secular voices also within the industry but the way the industry has functioned for decades these people soon become outcasts and work will just dry up.
The last few years has seen this Pan India thing pop up so you have regional stars names being put up as the biggest superstars of the country laughable as it may seem. There are no doubt some great directors in the Southern industries so it is possible their films can do well in the Hindi belts but that hardly means the actors in these films become stars and superstardom is far away except for the regional one which they probably have already..
India has seen seven stars achieve megastardom and two of them are Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. The others being Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. There is not one name in sight from regional film industries and yet today you see names like Prabhas, Yash, Allu Arjun and others put up with there with two superstars who are not only the biggest superstars of the day but among the biggest ever.
This is not to say that someone from the regional industry cannot become a huge superstar tomorrow because if the public takes to you then anything can happen but to reach the level of above names will take some doing not only for the regional stars but even for Hindi filmstars.
The simple reason why the the big superstars have come from the Hindi film industry is because the language has a wider reach. If other languages had a reach as wide as Hindi then maybe it would be a different story. Yes movies can be dubbed but that is the film reaching out and not the actor.
Basically the negativity towards the Hindi film industry has led to many claims as to which is the biggest film industry and who are the biggest stars and when the national media is like this you get the regional one badmouthing Hindi cinema as and pushing their own which is natural. But at the end of the day nothing much has changed despite the claims as the HINDI film industry easily remains the biggest film industry in India as content may go wrong but that does not change the reach.
As for the stars, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan remain the biggest stars in India and that does not look like changing for sometime yet even though the starpower may not be as big as it was other points in their careers

I recently watched Pathaan and BTS Yet to Come In Cinemas so my head is SHAHRUKH !!!! and BTS !!! not adding jhoome jo pathan because that is obvious with my display picture : p
Chalak Chalak from Devdas - boy, as a child did i hate jackie shroffs character in movie, and tbh even now a part of me is annoyed at him. ALSO MADHURI - no one will ever make a better chandramukhi, or devdas for that matter. yes, i wanted devdas and chandramukhi to get together : )
Dard e Disco from Om Shanti Om - this movie is so fucking nostalgic. It is the first movie we did online booking for tickets- now it is the norm but then-16 years ago (wow i am old) it had just begun. of course, first time a major bollywood actor other than salman having abs and shahrukh looked so good !
Chaiya Chaiya from Dil Se, are you a person from India or Indian roots if you dont know this song? from having it in plastic toy mobiles, to a staple song in annual days and birthday parties it is iconic. Sukhwinder singh, rahman magic + shah and malika's dance on train. I still cannot for me believe they danced on a moving train
Run BTS - it is a hype song, i need all the hype i can get, its cold, i am sleepy but i have to work instead of sleeping or watching tv shows ! the audacity
Cypher Pt 3 - namjoon saying he will this song after today in the busan concert was so hot, i d k, man but yeah
Aaj Ki Raat from Don shahrukh's entry in this song is very sexy okay?

I saw Brahmastra yesterday, and b*tches why were you trending boycottbrahmastra? lost your mind? Or something?
1) VFX was awesome! I mean woah! I saw in 3d and I was shooked!
2) Ranbir came off little awkward, Alia was alright but I still feel like Sid and Kiara would have done better! Karan Johar was involved, so ....you can expect that he will only get star kids to act in his film! But no hates to the actors! They did their best!
3) Shahrukh Khan and Mouni Roy outshined everyone! They ate and left no crumbs!
4) Story was like 8/10, I thought Alia will have some unknown power at the end but she didn't.
5) dialogues were average and sometimes came off cringe. Only if they gave some more efforts in this part.
Overall, you can go to watch this film with your whole family! There are no erotic scenes except for one peck at the very end!

Who is SRK? 👀 sorry I have no clue, is he some big star I should be knowing about? You seem to like him, I have read few asks.
he's a bollywood actor (i know how that sounds to someone who hasn't been introduced to hindi cinema but trust me this man is IT and forever will be for me). it's an abbreviation of his full name shahrukh khan. he's a huge deal, (bigger than brad pitt to give you an idea) by official monitoring of his huge fanbase but he's been quite on the down low for the past few years for some reason. he's been on one of those letterman episodes on netflix, you can check it out though it wasn't my favourite piece of media on him
i haven't really caught up in a while. used to be heavily into hindi cinema when i was in highschool (so quite a while ago 😅) and back then the (good) movies really were something else, a really intriguing form of escapism. the indian culture showcased is very enthralling, to me at least. i learned hindi all by myself just from watching and making friends online. sure i'm intermediate at best but i still consider it quite the feat for myself
nowadays i can't say i have the patience for such long films anymore and the way they seemed to have become more and more "westernised" kinda dampened the appeal for me. that being said though, i'm still familiar to the hindi film industry
i'm more of a fan of him as a person than anything though. hard to gauge if you haven't seen interviews etc
