The woodland amphithere (Amphitheris silva), also known as the fairy dragon or the beech wyrm, is a small draconoid endemic to the broadleaf forests of the Sunken Continent.

Vestigial wings aid in both gliding and thermoregulation. Each wing can move independently of one another, and their membranes can be freely contracted and expanded (see last image/GIF in gallery). The shapes of these wings have evolved to resemble the leaves of beech, hornbeam, and other marcescent trees that are the favored hunting territories of woodland amphitheres. Whole covens have been observed sunning themselves on tree branches in autumn and winter.

Fur-like moss growth on its head and tail enable it to supplement its primarily insectivorous diet with photosynthetic energy. This adaptation along with their unique wing structure allows them to forego hibernation altogether in more temperate regions.

Two pairs of eyes make these creatures adept hunters. The rostral pair are used to observe shape and color while the caudal pair specialize in tracking the movement of their prey.

Like many extant members of the amphitherid and other draconoid families, the woodland amphithere possesses relays, growths on the head which house complex electroreceptors. Relays in this species have evolved as rigid, antler-like structures. The exact purpose of these relays is unknown, but it is hypothesized that they may be involved in communication between members of a given coven.

Woodland amphitheres are semisocial and congregate in single-generation groups known as a coven or a flight. Covens are typically made up of six to ten individuals, although covens as large as two dozen have been observed. While they do not exhibit the same coordinated hunting prowess of other amphithere species, they are still remarkably sociable and have been observed to groom and to sing to one another.

Eggs are laid in communal nests in small ponds in early spring, and the brood is left to fend for itself by the parent coven shortly after hatching. The fry begin life as tadpole-like creatures with their wings and relays becoming fully developed by midsummer. The brood may linger for up to a year near its birth pond before leaving in search of new hunting territory.

Birds of prey, including eagles, owls, and lesser rocs, are typical predators of woodland amphitheres. Its primary defense is its own coven, which will swarm upon and harass the predator to drive it away. Larger covens have even been known to kill and subsequently feed on their would-be attackers, especially during the nesting season.

NaNo diary day 12

Today was a rough writing day. After visiting a friend at noon and having a pretty full afternoon and night of online semisocial events I think I've had my second weakest day so far. I'm still well on pace for 50k and probablu my stretch goal of 70k, but I also felt like I had to dig deeper to get anywhere. On the bright side, this means my writing is gayer than ever (for some reason) so that's a nice bonus.

Can you design, if possible, a semisocial flag with the semi- hearted version? Like in the semisexual, semiromantic, semisensual, etc. flags. Also can you do the heart red, as in other -social flags (homosocial, bisocial, heterosocial). All these terms are found in @beyond-mogai-pride-flags and @ask-pride-color-schemes

Cockroach Species Found to Live Like Ants With Workers and a Queen

“All cockroaches are solitary,” says Peter Vršanský at the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava – or so everyone thought. “It’s unbelievable!”

Neotropical Melyroidea group cockroaches reveal various degrees of (eu)sociality 

Eusociality in its various degrees represents an animal social system characterised by cooperative brood care, differentiation into castes and generational overlap. The fossil record indicates that eusociality is likely to have originated in hymenopterans and blattodeans during the Cretaceous.

In this study, we present findings from surveys in Peruvian (Villa Carmen) and Ecuadorian (Rio Bigal, El Reventador) cloud forests revealing the first extant cockroach species living in complex, structured groups (n = 90-200 individuals, ˃ 20 adults).

We observed and described behaviours that suggest the existence of cooperative care, nest guarding, nest chamber preparation within hardwood Casearia sp. (Salicaceae) and bamboo (Bambusoideae), multiple overlapping generations ('different stages of' instars), colony translocation, possibly a sole reproductive female (1.25 times larger white 'queen', but no potential 'king' observed), and morphologically diversified immature stages.

In order to define the lineage where this type of sociality originated and occurs, the forms of Melyroidea magnifica Shelford, 1912, M. ecuadoriana sp. n., M. mimetica Shelford, 1912 and an undescribed species from Peru are also described in a separate section of this study.

Blattoid morphological characteristics such as typical styli suggest categorisation within distinct Oulopterygidae (Rehn, 1951), outside Corydiidae Saussure 1864. Transitional advanced sociality or semisociality in related Aclavoidea socialis gen. et sp. n. is documented in a rotting stump (n = 80 individuals, few adults).

Close phylogenetic relation between the genera, conserved morphology of numerous characters and their diverse feeding strategies generally lacking specialisation suggests a rather recent origin of a social way of life in this group. Eusociality in invertebrates and vertebrates can thus originate in various phylogenetical and ecological trajectories including predation, parasitism, care for herbs and the new one, documented through diet shift from detritivory to fungivory and algaevory.

Interdisciplinary approaches reveal the low degree of knowledge of rainforest ecosystems , with fundamental groups remaining still systematically and also behaviourally undescribed.

Solitary to Social Bees

Strolling through my garden early in the morning, dew heavy on the flowers, I sometimes pause to gently pet a velvety sleeping bumble bee. Although it may seem a strange activity to some, for me it embodies the ephemeral magic of the garden at dawn. I can touch the slumbering bumble bee because of an unusual behavior—some male apid bees may sleep on vegetation, clasping stems or petals with their mandibles and spending the night at rest. Bumble bees are the largest of our native bees and the most familiar “in between,” hard-to-categorize-neatly bees. Here we explore bees that may exhibit a variety of solitary behaviors (such as provisioning their own nests) or social behaviors, depending on species. Some of these, such as bumble bees, live in annual social colonies, but only the honey bees (in the next essay) establish perennial colonies. Bumble bees are apids (family Apidae), a group with the broadest range of social behaviors of any bee family, exhibiting the full gamut from solitary (see previous essay) to truly social (eusocial) (see next essay). Other apids include squash bees, long-horned bees, carpenter bees, honey bees, and several lesser-known groups. They are closely followed in social diversity by bees in the family Halictidae.

Between solitary and advanced bees there are many social behavior variations, depending on species. Members of the same generation may cooperate in brood care to varying degrees (this is called “quasisocial” behavior). Communal bees may share a common nest, but each female provisions her own cells with food for larvae. In other species, there is division of reproduction, with some laying eggs and their sisters of the same generation acting as workers (these are “semisocial” bees). In all these variants, the bees are annual nesters.

Bumble bees establish their annual colonies in old rodent burrows and other ready-made homes. Only the mated new queens overwinter. Like honey bees, they are generalist feeders, and great pollinators of solanaceaous plants (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, petunias, and more). They dislodge pollen by vibration, and are more active in low-light levels and cool weather than honey bees. Soon after dawn, bumble bees awaken and another day’s activity begins. Bumble bees are “corbiculate” bees, named for the “corbula” or pollen baskets on their hind lower legs (tibias). In this, they are related to honey bees, orchid bees, and stingless bees (the last two occur only south of the United States border). Corbiculate bees are the only bees that ever exhibit advanced social behavior and, as noted, they don’t do so all the time. Some bees exhibit an opportunistic behavior called “kleptoparasitism.” A good example is the slender, hairless cuckoo bee (these resemble stinging wasps, though they are not aggressive in nest defense). Using the same strategy employed by their bird namesakes, cuckoo bees lay their eggs in other bees’ nests, waiting and watching till the other bee heads out to forage before sneaking in. When the cuckoo bee larva hatches, it kills the host egg or larva, if the egg-laying adult hasn’t, then eats the host larva’s pollen stash. Cuckoo bees aren’t the only ones. The entire apid subfamily Nomidinae behaves in this way, as do some other apid, halicitid, and megachilid bees. Basically they outcompete the rightful larva. There is a fascinating chapter on this curious behavior in The Bees in Your Backyard by Joseph S. Wilson and Olivia Messinger Carril. Some of my favorite garden bees are the beautiful halictid bees. The female is uniformly bright metallic green; the male sports a handsome black and yellow striped abdomen. Halictids are also called sweat bees, as some species are attracted to perspiration. Some nest in decaying wood, but most are soil dwellers, digging their own nest. Halictid bees are unusual in that social behavior may vary even within a single species. They are important pollinators of a wide range of plants, from fruit trees to wildflowers.

Honestly should have realized when I spent $100 on flashlights (our emergency kit got raided by my little sister moving out. She still hasn't gotten any of her clothes tho.) Like I should know the signs

Today is the day. No more excuses. No more laziness. No more “tomorrow”. I’m tired of always feeling like I’m falling short. It’s time to start good habits and stick to them!💪🏽 On my drive home today, the sun was peaking out waaaay off in the distance on the mountains as it began it’s descent for the night. Hazy clouds hanging low added a deep lavender color to the faintly pink, orange and yellow skies...☺️ Fall sunsets this season have been absolutely beautiful. Cameras don’t do them justice. My mind wandered in the car, and I️ began thinking about how truly odd it is that our life is cluttered with unsocial-semisocial interactions. Driving in our own car, we are separated from the rest of the people on the road by four walls and wheels. We project personalities unto the people/cars around us based on their driving style, type of car, and side profile (if it’s visible at all through the tint on their windows). When I’m stuck in traffic, I’m surrounded by people, connected in the chain of cars on the freeway, but not actually connecting with anyone (unless of course I️ crash). But we do this everywhere. With our neighbors on our street or in our building. We purposely ignore people we pass in the parking lot or in the aisle at the grocery store. I️ know I️ purposely wear sunglasses at school so I can look at people as they walk by and not have to worry about that awkward moment when your eyes connect and you either look away really quick like it didn’t or smile and awkwardly look the other way... I️ hate that. I️ hate that it’s so awkward to connect with people in a casual way like that. Most feel it taboo to strike up conversation with people in an elevator, or standing on a street corner, or waiting in line in our society. I’ve noticed that when smoke some weed and then find myself out in public situations such as those, quick moments we’re you’re forced to stand in close proximity with others, and just kind of, wait for something... I️ notice myself kind of, longing to talk to the people around me. I️ feel this amplified disgust in the integration of technology in our daily lives... I’m trying to break free from the social media ties. Trying to focus all of my energy in productivity and detach from the endless scrolling. Trying to write more. I️ decided that journaling is a habit that I️ would like to incorporate into my daily/weekly routine, and it would be cool to include pictures! And if I’m going to go through all that effort, to include a picture, I️ might as well publish it somewhere. So tumblr, good ‘old faithful tumblr, you are my platform of choice. Hello! So I visited the North Carolina zoo recently and I noticed a lot of their reptiles are cohabitated together. The habitats seemed like a decent size but I was wondering if there's actually a "size" cage where snakes can be kept together. In particular there was one enclosure with a pine rattlesnake a copperhead snake and an eastern rattlesnake all in pretty close quarters.

It’s not so much a size thing, but rather zoo management techniques! Sometimes with cohabbed zoo reptiles, they’ll shift the animals off-exhibit at the end of the day- they do that at the Shedd Aquarium with a bunch of their multi-species reptile/amphibian displays. Zoos tend to have space and resources that people don’t have in their homes. Keeping rattlesnakes in close quarters is a pretty common practice- many rattlers are actually semisocial and don’t mind being around other snakes. This is especially true of females- there’s been actual studies done about Easterns hanging out with other Easterns away from the places they hibernate.
