Screwtape Letters Wins Over Helluva Boss
Tumblr media
Premise: A business based in hell that involves sinners.
Helluva Boss:
* Tries to turn hell into a wussy safe place where people get on you for saying the r word and the b word.
* Heaven is being revealed to be boring and structured full of rules.
* Hell is portrayed to be a bit more chaotic, but yet not so different from how the living word is shown.
* The citizens actually have a compass to know right from wrong as a result it’s confusing how this is hell when people have standards not so different from earth.
* Hell’s worldbuilding is a mess not understanding why there would be jails and rehabilitation clinics since the thing is hell is about you not getting better but worse.
* It really doesn’t understand demonology or theology as they the creator thinks.
* The targets are made to be as bad as possible to make them feel it’s karmic they are being killed.
* It has increasingly juvenile humor that was funny but later gets very old.
______________________________________________________________
Screwtape Letters:
* Hell is portrayed as a horrible place and it’s authoritarian to the point they despise music.
* The demons to their core are evil and despise all things good. They truly can’t comprehend it and believe it to be vile. They don’t have a wrong way of doing sin but what gives better results.
* The patient is someone who we see is a moral and hope the protagonists don’t win.
* Hell is full of propaganda demonizing heaven and trying to treat it as if it’s a horrible place when it isn’t.
* There is so much humor to be found in a humorless sad shack like Screwtape.
* The worldbuilding you see is around how something like hell could function in their world and not based on just what human society is.
* It is by CS Lewis who being a Christian knows how sin works better than Vivziepop does and not a pop culture understanding of it trying to downplay how sin can work.

I got my substacks mixed up so looking at the tagline of “Indulge in the peculiar clarity that Hell affords” had me thinking it was talking about the Dramatic IronyTM of going to Mina’s POV for the first time today and screaming at her that her boyfriend is in trouble, but to no avail. Honestly, Screwtape, going to have to bring your A-game to top the torment of being unable to help Good Friend Jonathan Harker.

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis – C.S. Lewis, one of the most renowned Christian thinkers of the 20th century, gifted us with a unique and thought-provoking masterpiece titled The Screwtape Letters. Published in 1942, this captivating book takes readers on a journey through the cunning world of demonic temptation, providing a fresh perspective on the age-old battle of good and evil. The…

you know the screwtape letters are maybe doing the opposite of it's seemingly intended purpose (to convince you atheism is inherently evil). I'm Catholic. I might just not be by the end of this book /hj. This author is so bad at fighting arguments oml

"When he [the patient] goes inside, he sees the local grocer with rather an oily expression on his face bustling up to offer him one shiny little book containing a liturgy which neither of them understands, and one shabby little book containing corrupt texts of a number of religious lyrics, mostly bad, and in very small print. When he gets to his pew and looks round he sees just that selection of his neighbours whom he has hitherto avoided. You want to lean pretty heavily on those neighbours. Make his mind flit to and fro between an expression like ‘the body of Christ’ and the actual faces in the next pew. It matters very little, of course, what kind of people that next pew really contains. You may know one of them to be a great warrior on the Enemy’s side. No matter. Your patient, thanks to Our Father Below, is a fool. Provided that any of those neighbours sing out of tune, or have boots that squeak, or double chins, or odd clothes, the patient will quite easily believe that their religion must therefore be somehow ridiculous."
-- CS Lewis, The Screwtape Letters
I have experienced this, almost exactly as described, since deciding to become a Christian in August.

Screwtape letters - C.S. Lewis - summaries and quotes
1. may the weakness of my flesh not rule me to depart from you
2. Help me be not a hypocrite-I am no better than others in pew
3. Help me not neglect the physically spritual matters in relationship
4. Help me focus on knowing &loving your truth, praying to You. Not merely trying to manufacture feelings of love
5. suffering is essential to redemption
6. focus on what I'm doing rather than worrying about what will happen
7. be careful to keep pursuing God as the end (not a wordly end with faith as a means)
8. Troughs in life are what God uses to grow me. He wants me to stand on my own feet&want to love him even when all else seems to show he’s gone
9. know that life is an undulation. But faith in Christ is never just ’a phase’
10. learn to be consistent -Bweekdays &sunday morning. be not conformed to this world. Keep me humble, not to think I’m better than another whether Christian/not
11. be aware, the danger of jokes
12. There can be danger in continuing the outward external habits of a Christan but falling away spiritually. There are no signposts to hell
13. Active habits are strengthened by repetition but passive ones are weakened. The more often he feels without acting, the less he will be able ever to act and in the long run, the less he will be able to feel
14. all good virtues should end in self-forgetfulness. Take full delight and gladness in something you’ve made, then ‘forget’ about it
15. God wants us to focus on either eternity-with him forever or present-what he have us do now
16. learn to be a church pupil rather than critic
17. beware of the gluttony of delicacy
18. romanticism can be an unhelpful distortion of love
19. realise many a things are not ’good’ or ‘bad’. Love is not ‘good’ or ‘bad’. If lean towards bad >>acesticism. If good >> danger of it being noble. Beware that Satan uses both to steer us away from God
20. Beware of an undesirable marriage grown out of a desire to marry
21. my time is not my own. Consider, if i just give this bit of time for God. And this. And this..
22. God is a hedonist at heart. There are pleasures at his hand forevermore
23. If Satan cannot remove spirituality from our lives, he’ll corrupt it
24. There’s danger in ‘spiritual pride’. ‘My set’ is more interesting, better, I have a right to associate with
25. God has instilled in us the pleasure of change & the pleaseure of permanance. Careful of the desire, unhealthy desire of novelty
26. There are 2 understandings of unselfishness. 1-taking trouble for others. 2-not giving trouble to others. Because of danger of self-righteousness think you have been less selfish. It can lead to the Generous Conflict Illusion “If each side had been frankly contending for it’s own real wish, they would all have kept within the bounds of reason&courtesy; but just because the contention is reversed&each side is fighting the other side’s battle, all the bitterness which really flows from thwarted self-righteousness&obstinacy&the accumulated grudges..is concealed from them by the nominal or offical “unselfishness’ of what they are doing or, at least, held to be excused by it”
27. Anything that is brought before God in prayer is powerful and thwarts Satans’ plans. Distractions..sins..anything.
28. For one still alive, just as there is hope of repentance. There is danger of falling away
29. “Despair is a greater sin that any of the sins which provoke it”
20. Fatigue could lead to tempers “whatever he says, let his inner resolution be not to bear whatever comes to him, but to bear it” for a reasonable period and let the reasonable period be shorter than the trial is likely to last. It need not be Much shorter; in attacks on patience, chastity, and fortitude, the fund is to make the man yield. just when (had he but know it) relief was almost in sight
31. I will know God’s hand in all things when I see Him face to face.

Astaroth Corresponds With Screwtape
My dear Screwtape,Your recent musings on the intersection of melancholy and the sacred have not gone unnoticed. However, I must implore you to consider a more nuanced approach when dealing with our Christian ‘patients’ and their sacred suffering. The key to deception in this matter is subtlety. Encourage them to view their suffering as a mere byproduct of existence, devoid of any intrinsic value…

Projecting Feeling as Thought
Jeremiads teach us the impermanence and misguiding of emotions through a false filter as shown by Amusing Ourselves to Death and the Screwtape Letters. My father valued Spiritual emotions as one of the greatest and most important books he ever read. In that book, Roberts combines the thoughts of these two authors by stating that there is nothing particularly Christian about joy experienced while…

'@ruthparks5120 If you pair v.15 with Mark 13:24-27 then we have a #solid case against pre-tribulation raptures.
1 Thessalonians 4:15 | Death is Sleep By the word of the LORD, we declare to you, we who are alive and remain until the coming of the LORD will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.
Mark 13:24-27 | Return of JESUS [Matthew 24:26-31; Luke 21:25-28] But in those days 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 the tribulation: ‘The sun will be darkened, & the moon will not give its light; ²⁵ the stars will fall from the sky, & the powers of the Heavens will be shaken.’
²⁶ At that time they'll see the SON of MAN coming in the clouds w/ great power & glory; ²⁷ & HE will send out the Angels to gather HIS elect from the four winds, from the ends of the Earth to the ends of Heaven.
also contemplating how Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl wrote a book his experience at the death camps & in it he noted the vast majority of people curled up & died as though 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱, when the 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺; & Tim Keller noted that only GOD cannot be taken from us.
unless our house [purpose in life] is rooted in the ROCK of Ages [JESUS] then when the storm [or Holocaust] comes a knocking & Nazi's start to seize everything from you including your mind by performing lobotomy none of it will make sense, until we see #devil is allow to do everything but kill us, like he did with Job.
And isn't that interesting that JESUS said in Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to ME & does not hate his father & mother & wife & children & brothers & sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be MY disciple.
Because it was Job's wife who told him to curse GOD & die like the vast majority of ppl who died during the Holocaust..
unless a seed falls to the ground & dies, it remains only a single seed. If it #dies, it produces many seeds.
𝗔𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 #𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁, while anyone who #hates heir life in this #world will keep it for eternal life. [John 12:24-25]

When A Low Key Demon Tricks You | C.S. Lewis [John 12:24-25]
In 1941 C.S Lewis introduced us to a senior demon called Screwtape who is teaching his younger nephew Wormwood how to capture souls for the devil.
One day Screwtape told Wormwood to come here because I want to tell you the three most poisonous lies that will trap millions in Hell:
1.] lie #1 tell them science has disproved GOD and that the Bible has no evidence to back it up
2.] lie #2 tell them they're a good person and that they don't need JESUS CHRIST to get into Heaven; &
3.] lie #3 which will ensure that Millions upon millions of souls will be lost in Hell forever is this, "tell them they have plenty of time"
Tell them they have all the time in the world to make a decision.
My dear friend some of us do not have plenty of time—some of us will not even wake up to- morrow, so I beg you come to JESUS CHRIST.
Right now before it's too late & if this Message personally helped, please consider subscribing
@jabressdolath7657 | July 19, 2023 My husband at the ripe old age of 44 woke up, said he didn't feel well. Called into work for a sick day. He died at 12:50pm that day
@ruthparks5120 | July 21, 2023 Read first Thessalonians 4:13-18 My husband died at 42…
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 | Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
¹⁴ For since we believe that JESUS died & rose again, we also believe GOD will bring with JESUS those who have fallen asleep in HIM.
¹⁵ By the word of the LORD, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the LORD will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.
¹⁶ For the LORD HIMSELF will descend from Heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an Archangel, & with the trumpet of GOD, & the dead in CHRIST will be the first to rise.
¹⁷ After that, we who are alive & remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the LORD in the air. And so we will always be with the LORD.
¹⁸ Therefore encourage one another with these words.

"Be not deceived, Wormwood, our cause is never more in jeopardy than when a human, no longer desiring but still intending to do our Enemy's will, looks round upon a universe in which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys."
