Lily Orchard's Takes on "Racism" in The Owl House Are Garbage and Here's Why

Hello. You may know me as the guy who made two whole posts debunking Lily Orchard's takes on Hunter. Although those posts are not perfect and I do think there are some things I could add or change about them, they still hold up as I still stand by every single point I made in them.

But to say that Lily's bad Owl House takes end with Hunter would be a lie. There is this particular narrative about both TOH fandom and the show itself that she tries to paint that really pisses me off, that being the whole "Racism" narrative. I talked about it briefly in my second Hunter post but this narrative has so much objectively wrong with it that it's best to make a whole post refuting it. Here I'm going to go over Lily's takes on three characters that she primarily uses to push this whole racism narrative; Amity, Hunter, and Luz. Without further ado, let's begin...

NOTE: This post is LONG. Like, very very very very long. Its the longest post I've ever made and the longest essay I have ever posted on the internet. If you don't want to read all of that then just skip to section 7 where I have a TLDR for those who don't want to read an 8375-word long post that takes at least almost a full hour to read. So...ya, let's begin.

1. Lily Orchard's Takes on Amity are Garbage and Here's Why

I'll be covering Lily's Video "An Incoherent Discussion About Main Characters" mainly TOH segment as its the video where she talks the most about Amity. This is where the problems with Lily's narrative begin, that being; Lily saying that white characters are popular because of white favoritism rather than the fact that they are actually well written characters.

Oh, you thought Hunter was the only character Lily accused people of being racist for liking, ya, no. In the beginning of the TOH segment, Lily tries to argue that there's no reason for the fandom to love Amity so much because she (supposedly) has little depth as a character....

"At this point, Amity had no depth outside of being the bully, It's only until a month later that that would change. But the fandom latched onto Amity the moment she was introduced and hyped her up incessantly. with only a few clips where her ego is bruised and nothing else. And the thing is, Amity had nothing to her at this point. It's a common complaint from people that the fandom reduces Amity these days to just gay panic and shipping, but as of season 2, that is what she is, love interest, abusive parents, and that's it"

"Amity is a one-note character, and I don't say that as a bad thing characters fit the role that they were made for and there really isn't anything wrong with that. Amity is an obstacle for Luz to overcome and then her love interest and then occasionally gets a few moments of depth."

This is...objectively incorrect. Note I was not in the fandom at the time season 1 was airing (I only got into The Owl House when the show had already ended) however, Lily tries to act as if Amity is a character with little depth and that the fandom has no reason to like her so much. This is likely done so Lily can gaslight you into thinking she has a point so she can paint the TOH fandom as racist. Amity does go through character development throughout the show, as in season 1 she gradually becomes a better person and even makes amens with Willow after cutting her off during childhood.

She has a lot of moments of depth in episode Convention, Lost in Language, Understanding Willow, Escaping Expulsion, Eclipse Lake, and Reaching Out that develop her as a character. These aren't just "a few moments of depth". Amity is a developed character, the fandom has a reason to like her. And maybe people latched onto Amity because they liked the idea of an enemies-to-lovers romance?

Again, I wasn't in the fandom at the time, but Lily doesn't consider any of these reasons that people may like Amity so she could try and paint Amity as a 1-dimensional character when really people like Amity for being a well-developed character and Lily's arguments that she is one note are just objectively incorrect. She's a girl raised in a prestigious and high-class family who has to meet high expectations from her parents and bullies people she can't feel any weakness, and was forced to cut off her childhood best freind because she wasn't strong enough for them.

However, throughout season 1 she becomes a better person thanks to Luz, makes amens with Willow and stands up to her abusive mom in Season 2, and in Season 2 Amity still has episodes developing her with conflict with her parents, she's not just Luz's girlfriend. This is a well-developed and three-dimensional character here, and there's a reason why Amity is a fan favorite in the fandom. But Lily ignores all of that depth and character development in favor of painting Amity as one-dimensional so her racism narrative could look like it holds more water than it actually does.

And for the "abusive parents" stuff Lily says this:

"Amity's relationship to her parents and her perfectionism only ever come out in the third act of any other episode with the exception of Escaping Expulsion and Eclipse Lake. Amity's abusive home life is a plot device more than anything else, something another character pulls on to get the story going, and the solution is almost always insultingly easy, and she's only ever brought into an episode because Luz drags her into it"

Once again...this is objectively incorrect. Amity still has a lot of episodes exploring her character as I already stated so the first sentance is already false. But then Lily says that Amity's abusive home life is a...plot device? Um, no? Its not a plot device, its an aspect of Amity's character that the show is dedicating episodes to exploring. And "the solution is almost always insultingly easy"??? What do you mean by "the solution is almost always insultingly easy"?? Lily doesn't give any examples here, she just says something critical and you're supposed to just accept that.

And now...we get the moment you've all been waiting for:

"So why do people get upset at the idea that Amity is just reduced to love interest when that is literally her role in the plot? Well, (and if this gets posted on The Owl House subreddit then uhh please cover your ears you delicate little flower children) white favortism"

And now we have Lily trying to paint the TOH fandom as racist for liking Amity.

"It's been a common refrain for a while that the show has a white and the fandom makes it worse. Amity was the first instance of that"

Ok so 1. The show doesn't have a "white favoritism" problem, this is something I'll get into more later but the reason why Amity gets focus is because she objectively has more importance than to the plot thank Willow and Gusm being Luz's love interest. And I already talked about the real reasons the fandom likes Amity that don't have anything to do with racism.

"When she first appeared in I Was A Teenage Abomination, the fan base instantly started hyping her up as the greatest thing since Eda the owl lady. They immediantly projected every fucking thing on the sun onto her, and Lumity was birthed from this"

What if people just again, like the idea of an enemies-to-lovers romance between her and Luz? And I don't think I've seen ANY ONE project things onto Amity, again there are clear reasons to like these characters. Then Lily says this:

"That was all it took. It's by sheer fucking luck that Dana was going in this direction with them anyway because there was zero basis for any of this. Amity was a minor antagonist at best, and Willow was the main spotlight of I was a Teenage Abomination"

"Zero basis for any of this"? Again, Lily is acting as if there aren't any reasons to like Amity when as I already explained there clearly is. And if she means no basis for Lumity then...Lily, Lumity was clearly being set up a lot throughout the first season. Its not exactly hard to see that.

"There's no reason for people to go absolutely this crazy over her when Willow was right there. Hell throughout season 1 Willow had more grounds for a romantic relationship then Amity did. But Willow was chubby and Korean and Amity was not and not"

I don't know about you but I'm pretty sure a lot of reasons for people liking Amity more than Willow is because they find Willow and Gus to be less developed than Amity, which is a perfectly fine opinion to have. Once Again Lily ignores reasons people may prefer Amity over Willow in favor of just jumping straight to racism instead. And there also isn't as much of a hyper-fixation on Amity as Lily says there is, yes she's a fan favorite character but characters like Luz are still very popular.

The rest of the segment really is not worth talking about. Basically after this point Lily just keeps on trying to reinforce her objectively wrong narrative of "Amity is liked because of white favoritism", her saying that she thought Eda was the main character instead of Luz, and she also talks about Luz and Hunter here but that'll be covered in their respective sections.

So Lily's whole narrative about Amity being liked because of "white favoritism" is wrong, there are real reasons that people like Amity, Lily simply chooses to ignore that because that would break her narrative. Now that we have that out of the way, let's talk about the next character Lily uses to push this whole racism narrative (and the most obvious).

2. Lily Orchard's Takes on Hunter are Garbage and Here's Why - PART III (...kind of)

Again, I've already made two whole posts debunking Lily Orchard's critiques of Hunter so go read those if you want the full analysis on why Lily's takes on this character are completely wrong, but in the second section of Part II I talked about Lily's whole narrative about Hunter's fans that she tries to paint, that they are racist and only like Hunter for being white. She does basically the same thing she did for Amity; ignore the reasons why people may like a character in favor of painting the fandom as racist, and she also tries to act as if Hunter is only liked because people push headcanon's onto him. I'll just paste this piece of text here since I already refuted it in my second Hunter post;

"In her video talking about Hunter, Lily says that the fandom only likes Hunter in spite of how he's written, which is basically her saying "if you like this character you actually don't like him...or your just racist". Ok so, I don't want to talk about this that much here, however, it's worth noting that Lily constantly calls people who like Hunter racist purely for liking a character she doesn't that also happens to white, which is a major yikes, as there are reasons that Hunter is well-liked in the fandom beyond his race. But Lily's response to that is "If you like Hunter you only like him because you push fanon ideas onto him when he's really a shallow poorly-written character".

Let me tell you why people like Hunter; he's a boy who was indoctrinated and raised his whole life into believing he was doing the right thing and that Belos loves him, and for his whole life he was had to prove his worth to the EC or he's just worthless, and a lot of people also see Hunter's arc as him realizing he was being abused. None of this is stuff that the fandom is making up, these are literally things that are communicated in the show itself, Lily is just choosing to ignore that just so she can paint this narrative that TOH fandom is a bunch of racists because they like Hunter, completely ignoring how people can have different tastes and opinions than each other. Oh ya, and someone did point this out to Lily once in a tumblr ask...Lily responded by saying "no" and then went on another rant about how the fandom is racist for liking Hunter and sidelines Gus and Willow, and says that if Hunter was black, people would ignore him like they do with Gus and Willow...that speaks for itself. I could not find a screenshot where Lily said this, but I do know that she did say that in response to an anon poking a hole into her narrative, which just shows how she reacts to criticism."

Like with Amity, Lily constantly acts as if there aren't any reasons for people to like Hunter, and the reasons people do have are just things that people make up through headcanons, when this is objectievely false. There are clear reasons for people to like Hunter, but Lily ignores that in favor of painting this narrative that Hunter fans are racist. She even calls than misogynistic and homophobic in her video on Hunter without showing any evidence of that. And NONE of the anons she showed say anything like Lily described.

She keeps on reinforcing the narrative that Hunter fans only like him in spite of how he's written rather than the idea that he is written well, which is objectively false because again, there are reasons to like Hunter as a character, and all of Lily's takes on him are just objectively wrong. This is just Lily treating her opinions like they are facts in a very narcissistic and smug way.

But again, I've already refuted this point so let's get into the other point about Hunter that Lily tries to use to push this whole racism narrative; that being that Hunter overshadows and sidelines the non-white characters and gets too much screen time.

"Season 2 only made this worse with the introduction of Hunter, who as a character has an effect on the fanbase comparable to Audo and Ren. Overshadowing every other character and causing white girls to squee about how much of a good boy he is, even though he definitely isn't one"

I already talked about how Hunter doesn't take up as much screen time as Lily likes to think he does in my first Hunter post, but I'll just put some comments that I got from my first Hunter post as they debunk Lily's whole take her pretty well:

"Hunter having dynamics with the rest of the cast is a good thing and while him, it’s not being “stapled” into them, he’s just interacting with them in a fucking episode. He parallels all of the main four teens in some way so it makes sense. Plus, he’s only in half or less of the season 2 episodes and wasn’t in season 1, he didn’t get the luxury of low-stakes filler episodes so he kind of has to make a mark during the episodes he’s in. Which is why he’s usually the focus or at least major in them, that’s understandable and he’s compelling enough to justify it."

"I'll never understand the criticism of a character taking screentime away from others, if this character is considered by the writers to be more important than others, then they have to feel like they really do matter, that's normal."

The reason why Hunter gets a lot of focus isn't because of racism, its because he's an important character and he doesn't even appear in that many episodes so he kinda of needs to make a mark in the ones that he's in, especially in season 2B where the show got cut short so the show needed to try and dedicate as much of its time to developing the character it just introduced in the first half of the season as much as it can while still developing the other characters and progressing the plot.

Also, here's a fun fact; as two comments on my second Hunter post pointed out, Hunter is a character that can ONLY work if he's white, because he is a clone of a 1600s witch Hunter. Just a little tid-bit I thought I'd mention.

Hunter doesn't sideline characters as much as Lily likes to think he does, in Hunting Palisman, Hollow Mind and Thanks to Them he gets paired up with Luz, the main character who is also a black girl who gets an equal amount of screen time with Hunter. This is an extension of the whole "Hunter is stapled onto other characters" criticism Lily has, where she complains about...Hunter being paired up and interacting with other characters. Again, I already covered this stuff in my two Hunter posts, but Lily's whole problem here is simply that Hunter is in an episode, regardless of the reason.

And we all know that Lily is entirely biased to hate Hunter purely for being an "angsty white boy" so I think I'm done here. Again, go check out my two Hunter posts if you want to see go more in-depth on this whole "Hunter takes up too much screen time" criticism.

But in short; Hunter does not take up as much screen time as Lily says he does, and the reason the show focuses on him is that he has more importance to the plot than Willow and Gus, and because he needs to make a mark in each episode he's in, and once again there are reasons for people to like Hunter that are not related to "white favoritism". But now, let's get into the final character that Lily tries to use to push this whole narrative, and that is...

3. Lily Orchard's Takes on Luz's are Garbage and Here's Why (short version)

Let me just say, Lily's takes on Luz, specifically her trauma...are awful. They are almost as bad as her takes on Hunter, and I'm actually planning on making a whole post refuting Lily's critiques of Luz like I did with Hunter, but for now, let's just talk about the whole narrative she tries to paint with how Luz's trauma is received; this time I'll be covering the Luz segment of her fandom torture video.

But lets cover the Luz part of the Discussion of Main Characters video first before get into that. Don't worry, this will be quick. Here Lily constantly tries to argue that people want to ignore Luz in favor of Amity and Hunter but they can't because she is the main character

"But the thing is, while Amity and Hunter caused Willow and Gus to be completely sidlined, (and even their episodes in season 2 have generally just been them playing second fiddle to one of those two) neither of them have managed to sideline Luz. Amity's entire role in the story is to be a supporting character to Luz everything she does is to help and further Luz's goals and Hunter is an antagonistic force in Luz's story, trying to stop her efforts because they interfere with the goals of emperor Belos."

"Amity is the supporting character and love interest, and Hunter is the villain. And I imagine that is something that probably sticks in the craw of the Amity-Hunter hype train, they fact that they can't just ignore Luz like they clearly want to because the characters they like come with Luz attached as a default."

Not only does Lily not give ANY evidence to support her narrative, she's also just... objectively wrong. Luz is a beloved character in the fandom, there's tons of videos about her that get a shit ton of views, there's a lot of fan art and fan works around Luz, etc etc. People who like Amity and Hunter probably also like Luz a lot too. Just look at the Luz Noceda Tumblr tag and you'll see that it has more followers than either of any of Hunter and Amity's tags do.

Lily does not give any evidence to support her whole narrative and acts as if the TOH fandom really wants to ignore Luz, but as I already said Luz is still a beloved and fan-favorite character within the fandom, its not exactly hard to see that. Just because people like Amity and Hunter doesn't mean they secretly dislike Luz or something, that's just stupid.

I could go on and on about this but you get my point; Lily's entire narrative that she tries to paint that People want to ignore Luz is just straight-up false and she does not support her claim with any evidence whatsoever.

But now, let's get into the real meat of things; the narrative that Lily tries to paint in her Fandom Torture video. Again, Lily's takes on Luz's trauma are just as awful as her takes on Hunter but I'll only focus on the racism narrative she tries to paint, that being that the fandom likes watching 14-year-old black girls suffer I'm not joking. This is the narrative that Lily actually tries to paint;

"But the truth is...ya fandom does love this shit. They love watching characters' angst forever. They love their three thousand-word slow-burn hurt with no comfort fix. They love watching characters suffer especially if they're women, and especially if they're black, and Luz is both."

.......Lily, fuck you. This is a lie, a straight-up lie. Lily is trying to trick you into thinking that the TOH fandom are sadistic monsters who enjoy watching 14-year-old girls who are also black suffer, and not only is that objectively incorrect, it's also just...so unbelievably gross given the real reasons why people like Luz's depression arc.

Do you want to know why this pisses me off so much? The actual reason why people like Luz's trauma arc isn't because they enjoy watching children suffer, its because aside from it being a realistic and believable depression arc, it also resonates with a lot of people. No joke, apparently there are a lot of people who relate to Luz and see themselves through her. Dana created a depression arc for a character that ACTUAL PEOPLE WITH TRUAMA AND SELF-LOATHING ISSUES CAN RELATE TO.

NOT TO MENTION the fact that a lot of people in the fan base actually sympathize with Luz her and her self-loathing issues. Luz's trauma arc is well-received because it was able to resonate with a lot of people, and the fact that Lily chooses to ignore that in favor of painting the TOH fandom as a bunch of racists who enjoy watching black women suffer is just...disgusting. Fuck you Lily, and I mean that very sincerely.

Oh wait, cuz I'm not done with this! Hunter, a character that has gone through just as much trauma as Luz, and whose trauma is also well received by the fandom as well, Lily just ignores. So its bad when Luz gets traumatized and people like it but when the same happens to Hunter it's ok? Oh wait, I forgot, Hunter is a white boy and Luz is a black girl, that's the difference.

Lily, I'm so fucking sick of your double standards. So its bad when a fandom likes a black girl getting traumatized but when it's a white boy you don't complain and don't go and call them racist? That's stupid.

You probably already get my point by now so I'll just end this section here; Lily's whole narrative of the TOH fandom liking Luz being traumatized because they are sadistic monsters who enjoy watching black girls suffer is both flawed and disgusting, so is her narrative about the fandom wanting to ignore Luz in favor of other characters which is also objectively incorrect. But wait, there is one last video of Lily trying to push this narrative that I have not mentioned yet...

... it's the white favoritism video mentioning Hunter

4. The White Favoritism Video is Garbage and Here's Why

So for this post I decided to go ahead and watch Lily's white favoritism video, specifically the Hunter segments. I went into this video with very low expectations, expecting it to just be Lily repeating the same points she already made over and over again. And...holy shit. This video is AWFUL. Like I knew it was going to be bad, but I was not ready for the amount of bullshit Lily was going to spew. I was left completely shocked and speechless by the end of the second segment at what Lily just said in those two segments.

Time for me to tear apart both of these awful segments. Let's start with the first one, and only 16 seconds in after reinforcing her whole "Hunter is only liked because of fandom shit" narrative, Lily already starts talking bullshit:

"Even his rebelling against an abuser in the canon is undercut by the fact that it's basically a preordained destiny because every golden guard has betrayed Belos."

WHAT????! Hunter would have never betrayed Belos in the first place in if the events of Hollow Mind had never happened, hell when Luz and Hunter saw the memories of Belos doing evil things Hunter constantly tried making excuses for Belos and spent most of it being in denial. And we don't even KNOW anything about the golden guards, maybe they could've eventually realized on their own that Belos was evil, that doesn't undercut Hunter breaking from his abuser!

Then Lily says this:

"Furthermore Hunter ended up being the vector for a lot of people to start caring about Willow, Daruis and Camila, insofar so they could be used to bolster Hunter's character with romance and adoption respectively before this point these characters were ignored or in some cases vilified"

I don't really know about Willow but for Darius and Camila this is just wrong, from what I've heard Camila starting getting popular once the episode Yesterday's Lie premiered, and the reason Darius was vilified before Any Sport in a Storm is because...in he was a villain in the show until this episode showed us he may not be. This isn't racism, Darius's last appearance before this has him as an antagonist, that's why he was "vilified" before Any Sport in a Storm. The rest of this segment is not worth talking about, its just Lily reinforcing her broken narrative about Hunter only being liked because of fandom stuff when that's literally not the reason why he's well-liked as I already explained so now let's move onto the second section...

....the second section is actually worse than the first one. The amount of bullshit Lily was speaking during that three minutes gave me a stroke. So Lily actually starts off by acknowledging the accusations she has been that she only hates Hunter for being white and would've liked him if he was black (which is an undisputed fact), since she constantly complains about him being a boring white boy. How does she respond to this? Does she try to refute this in some way?

....No. Instead, what Lily says next left my jaw wide open as I tried to process wtf I just heard. This is what Lily says:

"When I started criticizing Hunter it came around the time I became a lot more vocally invested in non-white characters and some people in a prime example of desperately trying to give me what they think is a taste of my own medicine came up to me and said with whole pussy "If Hunter was black, you'd like him" with a very simple truth, "If Hunter was black, you wouldn't" "

Holy shit. When I heard this I was at a loss of words. Do I even need to explain why this is awful? Not only is Lily once again accusing Hunter fans of being racist to further her narrative, not only does Lily not even TRY to refute the idea that she dislikes Hunter for being a white boy, but she also even says that if Hunter was black, people wouldn't have liked him...even though Luz, a black girl, is a beloved character in the fandom. Lily cannot gaslight me into thinking otherwise.

Lily then continues to push this idea that if Hunter was black, people wouldn't have liked him:

"If Hunter was black the fandom would not have ignored every skleazy thing he does, like his supposedly best episode according to fangirls that established Huntlow as a ship where...he uses the power the state to kidnap several children and force them to join the magic Gestapo. They would not view this action equally if dark-skinned and stop writing that well actually comment you will not convince me that they would. "

Hmm gee Lily I love how you ignore...

The fact that Hunter meant well and didn't know what he was doing was wrong as he thought that he was doing his friends a favor by getting them into the emperor's coven because of his indoctrination so thus he doesn't exactly know any better.

(And most importantly) The fact that Hunter realizes what he did was wrong and not only takes full responsibility of his actions but also goes out of his way to fix his mistake and get his friends out a situation he put them in AND risked his position as the golden guard AND ALSO was willing to take a lethal strike from Darius just so he could fix his mistake, something that is pretty selfless if you ask me (go check out this post if you want a more in-depth rebuttal to this bullshit claim. It's not directed towards Lily but it basically addresses Lily's whole statement)

Ya Lily I love how like all Hunter critics you just completely ignore that. Now Lily is trying to push this whole "racism" narrative even further, not even trying to give a counter argument to the rebuttles Hunter fans give and just calls them racist by saying "If Hunter was black, you wouldn't be defending him". That's not a good counterargument Lily.

THEN LILY SAYS THIS:

"Furthermore the main issue with Hunter is that the story spends a lot of time with him but spends no time developing him outside of making goofy faces for the internet"

hiuodshuviusdhfiudhfiudshfiuhqweqweqwe HUH?!?! The show doesn't develop Hunter as a character?!?! WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?! ARE WE WATCHING THE SAME SHOW!?!? Either Lily's is THAT illiterate of she's deliberately lying. The show DOES clearly spend time developing Hunter, especially in Eclipse Lake, and the very episode that Lily criticized earlier, Any Sport in a Storm where Hunter goes through development and learns to make connections with others and has real friends.

HE GOES THROUGH AN ENTIRE ARC OF BREAKING FROM HIS ABUSER!!!! And no Lily you are not going to gaslight me into thinking that was all just fanon, because its not, its literally communicated within the show, you're just fucking lying. Do I even need to refute this point anymore? Anyone who's watched the show would now this is completely false so lets just move on to the next thing Lily says:

"Making him black wouldn't fix these problems, it would exacerbate them, because now you have a black character you are doing nothing with yet proudly displaying you are doing nothing with him, and that's a problem because its now the third time you've done that"

Ok, so...

The show is clearly doing things with Hunter, I already refuted this stuff in my two Hunter posts

Oh, I'm sorry Lily, didn't you say that Hunter being black would make him more interesting?

Skara is a MINOR CHARACTER that doesn't have any real importance to the plot, yet you want to show to focus on her just because she's black? What???

Also, remember the Skara thing for later btw.

"But all this distracts from the real problem, Hunter is only allowed to get away with being such a nothing burger of a character, despite taking up so much screen time because he's white and male. This is the only element of his character that people like and everything else is fanon that they made up. What little there is to his character is just ideas that were stolen from Luz and Amity and yet Hunter eclipses them both in popularity"

Do I need to explain why this point is garbage? This whole narrative that Lily tries to craft revolves around the idea that Hunter is flat and boring and has nothing to his character and nothing to him and isn't interesting and everything that people like about him is just fanon, and ANYBODY who watched the show would know that this is completely objectively wrong.

Lily, will you please stop trying to fucking gaslight people into agreeing with you? Hunter is an abused boy who was groomed and indoctrinated into believing he's doing the right thing and then breaks from his abuser and ends up finding real friends. This is not fanon, these are things being directly communicated within the show, you can not gaslight me into thinking otherwise Lily. The fact that Lily just straight up says that Hunter is only liked for being a white male reinforces the already broken narrative she has about Hunter fans. And once again Luz and Amity are still incredibly popular characters, I don't think I need to talk about this further. This point sucks, lets move onto the next thing Lily says:

"Ironically The Owl House goes to make Hunter a useless non-character because all of his acts of rebellion end up being underwritten by the fact that every golden guard has turned on Belos in the same way. So Hunter isn't even operating on his own accord its just gut instinct"

Lily, can you go five seconds in this video without saying something extremely stupid? Like I already said Hunter wouldn't have betrayed Belos if the events of Hollow Mind hadn't happened because he wouldn't have a reason to, he wasn't just going to wake up one day and say "I'm going to betray Belos for no reason at all!". Also, I'm sorry Lily, wasn't one of your complaints about Hollow Mind that Hunter was in denial for most of the episode??? HOW TF could you THEN turn around and say "Hunter's acts of rebellion were just gut instinct" like??? Hunter spent most of Hollow Mind IN DENIAL of the idea of Belos being evil, just because the other golden guards betrayed Belos doesn't mean its just "gut instinct", their genetic clones, not reincarnations.

And like I already said, we don't even KNOW anything about the golden guards, maybe they could've eventually realized on their own that Belos was evil, that doesn't undercut Hunter breaking from his abuser. Sigh let's just move on...

Now Lily's talking about Skara yaaaaaaaay

"Meanwhile if you like a character who isn't a white guy just because you vibe with them your expected to answer for it. Hunter stans can freely fawn over a character just because he's pasty and blonde as long as they invent pages upon pages of cope. But If I like a character just because their VA is cool and I vibe with their energy I'm expected to justify that like I'm in fucking court. I quite like Skara because her design is cool Kimberly Brooks is one of my favorite VA's and I like this little quasi-recovery arc she's got going on in the background. But butthurt Hunter stans angry about my criticism of the character and always throw that back in my face because those shallow surface-level traits of the character are things I call them out for focusing on"

So now Lily is addressing the whole Skara allegations except she didn't mention what people like me are accusing her of; liking Skara for being a black girl. Call it uncharitable, but Lily has constantly complained about Hunter being a "boring white guy" and explicitly stated that making him black would make him more interesting, and when asked how to fix Skara she basically said to make him a black girl, and since Skara (a black girl) is a character that Lily heavily hyper-fixates on AND straight up replaced Hunter's name with in the season 2 round up video AND since IN THIS VERY VIDEO Lily complains about Skara not getting enough focus despite the fact the show has no reason to focus on her because she's a side character with little importance to the plot, Lily has not beaten the allegations that she hates Hunter for being a white guy and likes Skara for being a black girl.

I'll admit in my second Hunter post I was a bit too uncharitable towards Lily since she has now at least given actual reasons for liking Skara, however Lily has still not beaten the accusations she's getting over liking Skara for being a black girl. There's so much evidence that points towards that and Lily hasn't refuted it at all. Also remember when Lily complained about Skara being another black character who the show did "nothing with"? Well, now she says this:

"This ignores the fact that Skara is a tertiary character and is therefore allowed to be mostly surface level. Hunter is a main character with the exact same level of depth as a background character."

So you admit that Skara is a tertiary character and thus doesn't have much importance yet earlier you complain about the show not focusing on her more??? What????

"You can argue that this is because the show was canceled but when you spend eight episodes doing nothing to progress a character the problem isn't that didn't have enough time"

I'm sorry EIGHT?! Hunter's arc throughout season 2 spans over the course of five episodes, not eight. And once again Hunter isn't doing nothing here the show is developing him as a character every time he appears, but again I already refuted this in my first Hunter post.

After this point, Lily stops talking about Hunter and goes on about how female and non-white characters are nit-picked and people act like you the weird one for not caring about their nitpicks and continues reinforcing her already broken narrative...and also makes a star wars comparison, so the rest of this segment isn't really worth talking about because it's based on points and arguments that I've already refuted. Besides this section is getting long enough already so I'll just end it here.

Good GOD that video was awful. Like, I already had low-expectations going into it expecting to just be Lily repeating the same shit over and over again...and it was, but it was also Lily making some of the WORST critiques of this show I have ever seen. Lily, how do your takes on Hunter STILL suck? The whole narrative Lily tries to build is based on points that anyone who watched the show and payed even a little bit of attention to it would know is completely objectively false.

Literally every single thing Lily says here has something wrong with it, I was NOT ready for the bullshit this video contained...

But ya, you probably get the gist now; this video is awful, and I've now gone through every single point Lily has made about racism in The Owl House and refuted each of them...

...But I'm still not done. Because there is a certain trend I've been noticing throughout these three videos, especially the first and third one...

5. Gaslighting

These next few sections are probably going to be a lot shorter since this abomination of a post has gone on for long enough already, so sections 5-7 will hopefully be quicker. Anyways, a common tactic I've seen Lily use during these videos is gaslighting. This is a manipulative tactic that she uses to try and make it sound like she has a point but when you really look at it, she doesn't.

We can see this with her insisting that Hunter and Amity have no depth where she boils them down to simple character traits (or just straight-up lies) to make them sound shallow. She especially does this a lot with Hunter with the entire narrative of "Hunter is only well-liked because of fanon stuff" which anyone who watches the show would know is objectively wrong. Then there's the whole "spite-based enjoyment" she tries to paint with him, where Lily says that Hunter fans only like Hunter in spite of how he's written. And in her Hunter video she...says this:

"There are a lot of Reylos in Hunter's fan base who are obscenely racist misogynistic and homophobic. And I sure as fuck am not counting them In who I'm talking to today. Hunter is a magnet for fandom racism and misogony, but today I'm talking past those people to people with a very sincere love for the character. You don't love this character for how he's written. You love him in spite of how he's written. And you should be upset that his potential is routinely squandered in favor of just making more shots about him moping and sulking. You should expect better. Everyone would have BETTER if did not waste time on this character doing fucking NOTHING."

Typing that as I listened to Lily's video pissed me off. This narrative is entirely broken once you factor in how all of Lily's takes about Hunter are complete garbage, but even worse, Lily is trying to gaslight Hunter fans who are going to watch her video by saying "If you like this character, you actually don't like him cuz I said so"

Fuck right off Lily. There are real reasons for people to like Hunter that are not fanon things that are being made up, stop trying to gaslight Hunter fans into agreeing with ffs.

Lily also does this a lot with Amity too, insisting that she's just a one-note character with little to her and there is no reason for people to like her so much, when that is not true at all. There are actual reasons people have to like these characters that are NOT being made up unlike what Lily is trying to gaslight you into believing her. This is an incredibly manipulative and condescending way to frame your arguments, that if YOU like a character you actually don't and you should stop pretending that you do.

Fuck off Lily. The show DOES clearly use Hunter to his fullest potential, anyone who watches the show would know that, stop trying to gaslight people with your terrible arguments. Again, read my posts on Lily's takes on Hunter if you want the full context of why none of her takes on him are good, but needless to say Lily really likes to gaslight people into agreeing with her here and that is a VERY manipulative way to frame your arguments.

Oh wait, I'm still not done...because now its time to talk about...

6. "Dana has a white favoritism problem" & Lily's Hypocrisy

Yes, you read the title of this section correctly. In Lily's TOH season 2 round-up video, she says this:

"I know we're all being very charitable to Dana but I think we all need to address the elephant in the room is that The Owl House fandom has a big white favoritism problem and SO DOES DANA"

"Dana is not doing anything to help if anything she's actively making it worse and I feel somebody probably needs to probably sit her down about that and just be like "hey Dana, stop""

.......there is no other way to look at this. There is no other way to interpret this, Lily is accusing Dana of being racist. Now, complaining about a show focusing on white characters too much despite any other reasons a show may have for focusing on these characters beyond racism is one thing, but to accuse somebody of bigotry for focusing on two white characters, ignoring any reasons the show may have for focusing on them beyond racism is just...

I don't even know how to even say it, it's just gross. Once again, there are reasons why Dana chooses to focus on Amity and Hunter as I've already explained, but Lily ignores those reasons and just casually calls Dana racist. Oh, and I'm sorry Lily, but if Dana supposedly had a white favoritism problem, why tf would she make a black Latina girl the main protagonist??? And also develop st. black latina girl a lot throughout the series making her a three-dimensional and well-developed character that a lot of people love and relate to?

Lily ignores all possible reasons that Dana may have for focusing on Amity and Hunter just calls her racist. Wow, as I couldn't have hated you more Lily. Oh wait, but I'm not done with this section, no no.

Now I'm going to be discussing Lily Orchard's hilarious hypocrisy here. I find it incredibly funny how Lily constantly accuses the TOH fandom and Dana of racial bias when she literally hates a character (Hunter) for being a white male. And when she constantly fetishizes black people and explicitly stated once that Hunter would have been more interesting if he was black. I can guarantee you that if Amity and Hunter were black and Luz, Willow and Gus were all white, Lily wouldn't complain about them taking up too much screen time like she currently does, you can't convince me that she would.

Lily so desperately wants to convince us how racist the TOH fandom and Dana are yet she hates a character for his skin color and gender and constantly complains about him being a "boring white guy". This comment from my first Hunter post sums it up best:

"Lily really just desperately needs a character to channel unjustified negativity into so she can act better than the fans who like that character. She found reasons to hate Amity that way too in season 1. She gets obsessive about how the series "could be better" (i.e. the series should do the specific thing that SHE wants even if it's not the creator's vision) and when things don't turn out that way she gets... weird.

Like she shipped WilLuz and was butthurt that the fandom mainly saw Willow and Luz as just friends and recognized that Dana was emphasizing Amity crushing on Luz ... but Lily was like, "How dare they ship Lumity and not WilLuz! This is the racist fandom hating PoCs!!!" without self-awareness to see that no one was being racist but her for assuming that people only shipped a thing they liked because one character looks Caucasian.

She'd get on her high horse and accuse Dana of "white favoritism" for having Amity be important and making the fandom like her... like, the leaps and bounds Lily will go through to turn herself into "the most noble person" in a fandom is shameless. She also would rip on Amity for being derivative of Malfoy or the spoiled girl from Little Witch Academia... when that character trope is what Amity was subverting by showing that Amity had depth beyond her snobby/type-A first impression since after her first impression she almost immediately started to show layers to her character.

I feel like Lily only stopped being so negative to Amity because even she had qualms against crapping on Amity when a) she realized that complaining about Amity being a bully long after Amity had since stopped and atoned for that behavior was getting really old, and b) shitting on one half of Lumity when it was probably one of the biggest, most wholesome LGBT couples in modern animation would be a hard sell for Lily (who as an LGBT person should be less harsh on earnest representation from an LGBT creator).

Along comes Hunter and Lily can't exist without having a designated hate-sink so she projects all her dislikes into Hunter for merely existing. His design being light-skinned and handsome was enough to repel Lily. Him being a genuinely good person who had a troubled life but still perseveres to protect the relationships he's forged... he's pretty much a perfect addition to the cast that kind of adds a missing quality to the series (like how Toph in Avatar the Last Airbender was kind of the special spice that elevated the series for the better by being added to the cast). But ignore all the good his character brings because he's a caucasian-ish character who used to be tricked into being on the bad-side. I'm also sure Lily was furiously spewing venom when she saw that Willow was paired with Hunter, since Lily wanted Willow to be with Luz."

Lily, if you constantly accuse people of being racist for liking a character you don't and also accuse the creator of being racist as well, but solely hate a character for being a white male, then I'm sorry, but nobody here is being racist except for you. (I could also mention her star wars fic but this post is getting long enough so let's just end it here)

7. Conclusion

TLDR for those who don't want to read this entire post:

There are clear reasons why people may like Amity and Hunter that have nothing to do with racism at all

There are also clear reasons why the show may want to focus on these characters due to them being important to the story

Luz is a beloved fan-favorite character and Lily does not give any good evidence to suggest otherwise.

Lily's take that people like watching black women suffer and that's why Luz's truama arc is well-received is completely false as it is well-received due to being able to resonate with a lot of people.

The white favoritism video is fucking awful

A majority of Lily's arguments are just her trying to gaslight you into agreeing with her

Lily complains about the TOH fandom and Dana having racial biases when she is racially biased herself

Lily Orchard remains my most hated YouTuber. She's a shit critic and an even shittier person, and I sincerely hope that one day, Lily's entire channel gets terminated and wiped off the face of the internet, because people like her do not deserve a platform. Star Wars TLJ Rewrite: Final

Author’s Note:

Chapter 29: Calm Before The Storm

After a few months of gathering allies around the Outer Rim, Varax lets out a sigh of relief to be back on Naboo. As he steps off the ship, Poe and Finn run up to him to await their new plan. “Are we gonna terminate their fleet?!” Finn asks, almost giddy at the concept of destroying the First Order “Yeah, we gonna blow the Supremacy into a fiery wreck?” Poe asks, not as giddy, but equally enjoyable in the concept. Varax gives his friends a smile as he points to the nearby ships below Theed as an army of soldiers from every corner of the galaxy line atop their respected ships to await their orders. “Gentlemen, I’m done sitting by, the First Order wants a war… we’ll give ‘em a damn war” he says before stepping up to a podium, overlooking his new army alongside Aliana, Rey, and the other high command officers of the Resistance.

“My fellow citizens of the Galactic Republic and beyond, For too long have our homes been sacked, raided, and pillaged by fascist empires over the decades. And for too long have we sat idly by while they do so… Well I say no more!” He says through the valley, his voice booming through the hologram like thunder. “I have gathered you all here, not only to fight, but to crush, burn, and eradicate the tyrannical First Order that has terrorized the Galaxy we call home!” Varax bellows as the crowds cheer in glory. “For today, this will be marked, as either the Galaxy’s final stand against tyranny, or the end of the first order. But regardless of if we win or lose WE WILL NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT!!!” He yells as the crowds cheer before the entirety of the First Order’s fleet, including both the Supremacy and Finalizer warships appear out of hyperspace. “FOR GLORY, FOR FREEDOM, FOR LIBERTY, AND FOR THE ETERNAL ALLIANCE!!!!!” Varax yells, igniting his lightsaber and pointing it straight at the fleet, officially declaring war against the First Order as his army flies into the atmosphere, cheering as they lift off into battle.

Rey and Aliana look at each other and give one more good kiss as the battle begins.

“Hey Aliana?” Rey asks

“Yeah love?” Aliana asks

“If we survive this, we’re getting married” Rey says with a smirk

“I’ll take you up on that offer hun, just don’t die okay?” Aliana says with a soft laugh. “I’ll try hun” Rey says as they depart for the fight.

Chapter 30: To Ben, Or Not to Ben?

Varax sat aboard the Rattus with an almost maddening stare as the First Order fleet burned around him as Lord K’un enters the bridge. “Quite the speech my friend, I’m surprised you’re not fighting alongside the troops or the starfighters” he says as his serpent staff coils around his arm. Varax gives the warlord a chuckle “The wisest leaders know when to and to not sit upon the front lines” he said as he looked upon the chaos.

Meanwhile, Snoke is almost foaming at the mouth as the fleet he spent almost 3 decades building and financing burns around him. “KYLO!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING OUT THERE!!! I WANT THOSE SHIPS ERADICATED” He yelled through the holomessage of Ben as he flew through the chaos. “The fleet outnumbers us 12 to 1, even if we were as great as Sidious’s empire, we’d still lose” he explains before Snoke gives him a glare “Bring me Varax Koslov and his apprentice, or you will be replaced boy!” he barks before hanging up.

Kylo thought for a moment as he dodged the enemy fire. Was he wrong? Did he screw up? Was his mother, father, and uncle right? Questions riddled Kylo’s mind as he flew through the chaos before noticing Varax’s presence through the force, he sensed he was aboard his mother’s old warship the Raddus. “Alright Snoke, you want Varax, you’ll get him” he says as he charges at the warship.

Varax feels Kylo’s anger through the battlefield, he outstretched his hand as the TIE Interceptor charges at the war room before slamming the ship into the hull of the Raddus.

Kylo ejects from his ship's cockpit, luckily landing in a transport tunnel rather than a hangar, he climbs out as a hover deck flies beneath him. He kills the guards with minimal effort as he makes his way to the central hangar, sensing Varax’s presence inside.

Varax stares at the HoloDeck gates as he hears Kylo yell through the barrier and blast through, igniting his red crossguard as he points it at his old master “You should’ve killed me, now you’re gonna suffer” he says under his mask, almost snarling with his words.

Varax lets out a deep laugh as he takes off his exterior robes and cloak, “Let's end this, Padawan” he says with a smirk as the two engage in a furious duel.

Meanwhile, Rey and Aliana sneak aboard the Supremacy with Finn and Poe…

Chapter 31: Duels Of Fate

Rey plants the charges aboard the hyperdrive with Poe as Finn and Alie keep watch, “You know, it would be a shame if you don’t make it out of this Finn, you’d make a great Jedi” she says, trying to lighten the mood a little. “Nah, Jedi stuff is your guy’s thing, and besides, I’ve always been better with a blaster anyhow” he says as he holds up a blaster pistol ironically. Rey giggles a little “Alright doofus, but if you change your mind just ask, I’ll always be ready to take on a student” she says as she arms the last of the bombs “ALRIGHT THATS ALL OF THEM” she yells down to the others as she and Finn hop down.

Suddenly, Rey feels a sickeningly cold feeling through the Force, “It’s him” she says as Snoke enters the chamber with his knights at his side. “You know, I half suspected you’d step out of the war business Rey, but I guess if you want something done right…” he says as a pair of lightsabers slide out of his sleeves, igniting into a deep red color “...You do it yourself” he says as he charges the group, roaring as he flips through the air as Rey and Aliana prepare to fight the Supreme Leader.

Back on the Raddus Varax is holding his own against Kylo, using a new lightsaber form he developed by studying the Nightbrothers of Dathomir, the Mandalorian Death Watch, and the Yusong Vong of Exegol. Kylo is struggling to keep up the defensive as Varax targets his weak point: His cybernetic arm. And after a heavy barrage of swings and slashes, Varax gleans both of Kylo’s arms as he falls to his knees. Varax grabs the red crossguard and holds it to his neck, “Do it, let the past die, kill it if you have to” he snarls under his broken mask.

Varax just lets out a disappointed sigh, “I sensed a glimpse of light inside you Ben, before you snuffed it out” he says as he backs off his blades and deactivates them. “You will stand trial for what you’ve done, and I’ll make sure your death is quick and painless” Varax says as Resistance troops take Kylo to the brig, the Dark Jedi screaming in rage as they grab him “DAMN YOU VARAX!!! KILL ME!!!! END MY TORMENT!!!! YOU WILL ALL BURN!!!” Kylo yells through the halls as the troops take him away.

Varax heads to the Obsidian Blade and notices a familiar presence through the Force…

“Son of a bitch, he actually came back!” he says as he heads to the Supremacy

Chapter 32: Epilogue (Part One)

Rey and Aliana hold their own against Snoke, managing to lead him to the ships hangar as the duo do their best to fight the old tyrant, “Where’s Finn and Poe?!?!” Rey asks in between strikes as Snoke flips back and starts hurling TIE Fighters at them. Aliana tries to answer in between dodges “Last I saw of them, they were running to the barracks. I don’t know what for though” she says as she uses Force Lightning to overcharge a fighter as Snoke leaps above them before being stopped mid air.

Rey and Aliana stare and see Luke, Varax, and Gungi holding the Supreme Leader above them with the Force, throwing him into a wall as the trio of masters ignite their blades “FOR THE ALLIANCE!!!” Varax roars as he charges the old tyrant, Luke and Gungi following suit as the five of them overwhelm Snoke before he pushes them back and holds Aliana in the air.

“So little girl, you think you’re powerful, let’s test that theory…” he says before pulling Aliana in with the Force and slicing her left leg clean off. Aliana cries out from the pain, Varax lets out a roar as he charges the Dark Lord before getting hit with a torrent of Force Lightning.

“What? Did you think you won? Foolish brat!!” He says as Varax writhes in agony as the lightning burns his back and shoulders before Luke jumps in front of him and impales Snoke in the stomach “This is for Ben you wrinkly fucker” he says before absorbing the lightning and releasing it into a massive explosion of Force energy.

“The Light Bomb….” Varax says in awe as he and Gungi help Rey and Aliana get up. As they do that Poe and Finn come running out “GET ON THE SHIP THEY DIDN’T WANNA CONVERT WE GOTTA GO!!!” Poe screams as the group head for the Fury and fly out of the Supremacy as Finn activates the bombs planted on the ship’s hyperdrive. The warship slowly falls into Naboo’s atmosphere in a fiery demise. “Holy kriff, WE MADE IT!!! YEAH BABY!!!” Poe says as he jumps into Finn's arms and hugs him before looking at Rey. Rey holds Aliana in her arms, her lips are curled and tears roll down her face as 2V enters the living hall. “Oh I’m so glad we ca- HOLY MOTHER OF THE FORCE WHAT HAPPENED TO LADY AMOROSA!?!?!” he screams as the others look to Rey for an answer. Before she can give one however, Varax steps up and explains what happened. 2V Gives the Sith, the closest thing he had to a daughter, a look of sadness as he carries her to the medical room.

Chapter 33: Epilogue (Part 2)

Several Weeks After the Battle Of Naboo

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rey walks into Aliana's room, her Sith fiance lying outstretched on the red mattress like a Corellian Spice Hound. “Well don’t you look radiant love, sleep well?” she asks Aliana, who tosses and turns in response, “yeah, just give me five more minutes hun, this bed is soooooooo much better than the ones on the Raddus” she says underneath a pillow. Rey crosses her arms as she looks down at the prosthetic leg Aliana had been wearing for the past month or so, which was on the ground and not on her leg as ordered by 2V.

“C’mon, get up, we’re meeting up with Varax to open the new Eternal Academy Today, and YOU are the head of Sith studies my little sleepyhead” she says as she sits on the mattress next to Aliana. The Sith lets out a groan “Fine, only if I get to pick our takeout meal after the ceremony, I’m sick of Mon Cala seafood” she says as she gets up and fixes her hair.

After getting ready, the duo reach the Eternal Academy, located on Kashyyyk, and land on the personal landing pad set up by Chieftain Lowbacca and Master Gungi.

As they step out they see hundreds of thousands of people lined up from across the galaxy. From the Core Planets to the Farthest Reaches of the Outer Rim, all citizens of the New Republic gathered to witness the rise of a new academy of Force Users…

Varax, the newly elected Headmaster, steps up to give his speech…

“Citizens of the New Galactic Republic, It gives me great pleasure to announce the official opening of the Eternal Academy. No longer will the ancient rivalries of the Jedi and Sith plague the galaxy we call home” he says as the crowd roars with laughter, cheers, and rejoice as Varax ignites his saber and points it to the sky, as if raising a torch to a new era…

“MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU, AND MAY IT SERVE YOU WELL!!!” He cheers as fireworks paint the night sky with a barrage of colors…

Thus bringing a new age of adventure, in a galaxy far, far, away…

I hate that the only way to get Lily's harmful videos taken down is for the main stream media to find it. There's no other way if YouTube can't. Lily has crossed so many lines but this one is the last straw.

Youtube is way too fucking messy with who can do what, as you got youtubers getting crap for everything basically, even when they do go out of their way to censor things, but according to Lily, cause she still makes money;

"As people think" they are strict Lily. MamaMax got his video fucking taken down instantly, while your videos discussing Pedophilia are still up. You got youtubers who have to bleep their swearing and use terms like 'unalive' cause youtube again, will fuck over videos (evidence being how True Crime Youtubers are treated like Savox, and youtubers who swear for one time suddenly getting their video fucked over in response). But cause Lily makes money while swearing??? 'Well the rules clearly aren't as strict as you make them out to be.'

Like someone tell Lily that its probably cause Youtube is known to favor certain youtubers and is known to love money and views over actually doing shit. Vegan Teacher is a huge example of that. She's basically said the N word more then once, gone after numerous creators, told people she'd be happy if they died and also swears a-lot herself, but still somehow got that silver play button cause again, she's a controversial figure who brings views in. Views equals money, so youtube will turn the blind eye. The same can be said. Lily definitely has a play button with her subscriber count and such, and Lily is a highly controversial figure, given the amount of videos on her, and she earns a-lot of views. So like, youtube is likely seeing money with those views, so as long as Lily don't rock the boat too much, they'll allow her to do what she's currently doing, while taking it out on other creators.

Like, unless Lily does something TRULY stupid to get the media on her, no one will really care. The self harm image is a disturbing inclusion, let alone her ongoing dangerous advice to people in abuse situations, but no one in media's going to really care, and therefore youtube won't. Therefore, giving Lily this stupid idea that the rules aren't strict cause haha, look at all this money she's making while your favorite youtuber likely just got their entire job taken off youtube cause of a simple fuck up. Like, I really wish youtube would knock her off that high horse, but until she does a truly worthy fuck up, its unlikely, sadly.

A few months ago, I sent @lily-orchard a DM informing her about (what I thought at the time) an upcoming reboot of Scooby-Doo. This is what I sent:

Upon reflection, I realized that what I sent was worded badly (I was trying to say that the writing was the most important part, and reviews I saw at the time were the usual "ThEy ShOuLdN't Be PoLiTiCaL" nonsense that hit the Ghostbusters reboot a while ago) and reflected badly on me as a person. I am apologizing for this.

To @lily-orchard directly: I am sorry for this and for misusing your DM. I screwed up, but I have learned from this and will not make the same mistake again. (I will only use a DM if the information is confidential and not for my own selfish reasons, and I will think through my words before posting/submitting) I hope you can forgive me for my mistake.

Lily Orchard and Beauty and the Beast

So anyone who watches Lily Orchard and her videos on the Disney Renaissance know that she doesn't like Beauty and the Beast. And...yeah, she's not entirely wrong about it. Even people who like the film have made Stockholm Syndrome jokes about it. That said, I'd like to point out a couple things that I think Lily either missed or outright refuses to acknowledge:

1. In the prologue, it's mentioned that the enchanted rose would bloom until the prince's 21st birthday, and than later during "Be Our Guest" Lumiere mentions that they've been trapped in the castle for 10 years. That means the prince was 11 YEARS OLD when the Enchantress cursed him. She forced a cruel and unusual punishment on the inhabitants of the castle because a CHILD was rude to her. Does this excuse the Beast's behavior? No it does not. All I'm saying is that he's not some by-the-numbers Lifetime movie wife beater that Lily seems to think he is. Anyone with some knowledge of psychology will tell you what years of isolation will do to a person's psyche.

2. Belle doesn't just put up with the Beast's crap. She makes it very clear she doesn't want to be there. She bluntly refuses to have dinner with him, even as he's screaming at her and pounding on her door. She outright defies his orders and goes to the west wing. Then when he screams at her again for messing with the rose, she's like, "Nope! Screw this! I am not putting up with this!" and she hightails it out of there. I'd like to point out that not even a DAY has passed at this point, and she's broken her word to stay in the castle because she refuses to be a potential victim to the Beast's temper. Her self-preservation trumps her pride.

When the Beast saves her from the wolves, she could've just left then and there. She had no obligation to save him. He kidnapped her, threatened her father's life, and has intimidated and verbally abused her several times. Had she just kept walking she would've been free of him and she'd never have to deal with him again. But Belle, being the kind-hearted person she is, gets the Beast to safety and returns to the castle of her own volition. And then, when she's treating his wounds and he starts being a jackass again, she all but tells him point blank, "No. You are NOT gonna treat me this way. If I'm gonna stay here, you're gonna learn basic manners and common courtesy, and treat me like a human being."

...Just a little food for thought.

Matters of the heart Episode 8 Building bridges {OPENING CREDITS} {Open to Varian rushing around his lab grabbing various bags of items} Varian: okay let’s see...sand...calcium...silica...copper...water.. {Isaiah walks into the lab rubbing his eyes still waking up} Isaiah: Dad what are yo-!? {Varian grabs Isaiah and forces him into a corner; he ties him to the workbench and puts goggles on him} Isaiah: hey! What the!? Father explain! Varian: Okay look last time I worked this machine was 18 years ago and it ended up making a vortex that nearly pulled the entire courtyard into doom so….Stay!...Love ya, buddy! {he kisses his forehead and runs back to the machine and pours various minerals into it; he pulls the leaver and stands back; Quirin walks in through the front door} Quirin: Morning so-..... {the machine zaps and makes loud mechanical noises; Quirin closes the door walks back out and closes the door} Isaiah: *yelling* AND THIS WAS FOR A SCIENCE EXPO!? Varian: come to think of it maybe 18 years is too long to leave a machine gathering dust in a shed...HIT THE DECK! {he throws himself over Isaiah; the machine explodes sending debris everywhere around the lab; Quirin rushes in} Quirin: Son!? Isaiah: Just take your caravan and go!! {He runs away leaving Zapada shocked and teary-eyed; cut to Isaiah sitting in the orchard crying with his head in his knees} Lily: thought I’d find you here… Isaiah: H-huh!? P-Princess I-...*kneels* Lily: don’t...you’re a friend...did you forget I was visiting today? Isaiah: right...sorry… Lily: sooo...what happened...your dad said you ran away upset. Not gonna lie, I'm generally concerned about Lily Orchard. Her refuse to listen to other viewpoints and calling criticism against her "lies" make her no different than the "conservatives" she hates so much. Just look at her tumblr page. Anything she says about Steven Universe is actually uncomfortable to read.

I don't think shes invalid to her points at times but I also do get the impression she doesn't take criticism well.

I'm sure some might be jerks to her but I cant say that applies to everyone, I think If someone wants to give her their opinions on her work she should give it a listen

Tbh the thing that bothers me more about her stuff is she kind targets the crew too much and I can't help but feel uncomfortable.

Yeah the crew screws up but it kinda feels like directly attacking them then giving criticism to their work.

CHAPTER 14 - PTSD

The sun had just risen when Lily started to drift from a deep sleep to the half comatose state she was when she usually woke up. That state where she always wondered which day it was.

Her eyes still closed, she squeezed her pillow and twitched a little.

Mmh that's warm and firm and it smells good...

She tried to stretch her legs a little, and winced when she found one of them intertwined with... another leg that didn't belong to her!... And didn't belong to Peter either!

And suddenly she remembered she was in a hotel in Northfield with Misha and fell asleep next to him yesterday. Her eyes popped open, she let go of him and jumped to get out of his arms, feeling guilty, but she was too close to the edge of the bed so she fell on the floor, back first, bumping her head on the nightstand in the process.

"Ouch! Fuck!"

Naturally, the movement followed by the loud thud woke Misha up.

"Damn! Lily are you okay?"

He laid on his stomach to look down the bed and stifled a laugh when he saw her laying on her back, wearing only the large T-shirt and shorts that she slept in, her legs spread, rubbing on the back of her head.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine."

Misha's face fell when she pulled her hand away from her head and he saw blood on it. He immediately jumped down the bed next to her and supported her head.

"You're bleeding!" He helped her getting up slowly and sat her on the bed, examining her hair, and spotted the wound where it was sticky.

"I don't think you need stitches, but let me clean it."

She was awfully quiet the whole time. Misha went to the bathroom and could only find alcohol to disinfect the wound.

He sat behind her and applied the gauze on it. She jumped once again.

"Fuck! It hurts! What did you put on it?"

"Oh she speaks! It's alcohol, don't be a baby. It won't be long."

She hissed when he cleaned the wound but didn't say anything.

"Why did you jump out of bed like that?"

"I don't know, I... I woke up and I saw you... I felt guilty and in the half-asleep state I was in I jumped like an idiot."

He was amused.

"That's a first! You feeling guilty because you slept with me."

"That was totally inappropriate. I'm sorry."

"We watched TV and fell asleep. Big deal! We're not teens anymore, Lily. And it's not like I have a jealous wife in the first place. Just relax, would you?"

"I know! I just need to get used to it, I guess."

"Okay, you're fine."

He stood up and disappeared in the bathroom. When he reappeared a few minutes later, he was fully dressed and ready to go.

"I'm gonna get breakfast. Get ready. We've stalled long enough."

She sighed and went to the bathroom to take a quick shower and get dressed. Misha was here with breakfast when she went back in the room to get her stuff.

"Your morning dose of caffeine, ma'am."

She took the cup from his hand with a smile. That was just what she needed.

They left the hotel and jumped into the rental car to finally drive to the farm.

The short trip was quiet, they were both sipping on their coffees when they soon arrived in front the property where Misha parked the car.

"I'm kinda nervous..." He admitted.

"I know... I was too. But you'll feel better when we're done."

"Where do we start?"

"Let's go directly to the house and we'll walked back to the car stopping by the other places."

"Okay..."

He got out of the car and started walking on the large main path, Lily by his side.

"Why do you always say Vicki's not the jealous type?"

She didn't even know why she asked that question at that moment, but the silence was making her nervous and it was the first thing she could think about.

"Because it's true. I'm not either, and I guess we've been together for so long because we found a certain... balance."

"You??? Not jealous??? Are you kidding me? Do I have to remind you what you did because of Ty in Italy?”

"That was different." He said, his voice becoming lower.

"How?"

"Well... It was you. I don't... you I can't share."

"Share? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Are you saying you're sharing Vicki?"

They were now walking between the cottage and the pond.

"Yeah. She's probably banging her girlfriend as we speak and I don't mind."

"Wha-"

She stopped walking, and when Misha realized she wasn't next to her anymore he turned around.

"What? Don't tell me you're tired already!"

She walked next to him so she didn't have to scream.

"Do you realize what you just said to me?"

He kept walking and she followed, they were now on their way to the orchard.

"Of course I do. I wasn't lying went I told you we're not enough for each other. She loves me, but she's in love with her friend too and I'm okay with it. They have sex, they're happy, and if I need to, I just... join them."

Lily's mouth dropped.

"Excuse me???"

Alright... he was definitely messing with her now. It couldn't be real.

He didn't add anything, so she scoffed.

"You're not serious. you can't be."

"I assure you I am, Lily."

"But... But... But.... The kids! And... and... How could you change that much?"

"The kids are out of this. They're too young to understand anyway. And I didn't change, I just met a woman with other... convictions. I don't think it would've happened with you."

"Of course not! I mean no offense but... I would be full of rage if I knew my husband was screwing another woman, friend or not!"

At that moment, she pictured Peter and Katie having sex and felt nauseous.

Misha laughed.

"You mean like the time I left with my family and you were sick the whole time thinking I was banging every girl on my path?"

Damn he had a good memory. She felt so stupid...

"Ah... You remember that." She looked down at her feet, walking pass the barns.

"I was too disappointed to forget. I told you I would be back and I would be faithful and you didn't believe me. That hurt."

She let out an annoyed and embarrassed moan. He knew exactly how to make her feel guilty.

"I knooow... We've been over this a long time ago already! Don't remind me."

"I wouldn't be able to share you. Not even now... not even with Vicki."

"Okay... end of the conversation! This is making me super uncomfortable. We're here anyway."

The half burnt house was indeed right in front of them.

"So what now?" She asked a little confused.

"Well... Now we get inside."

She ran after him as he started his way to the house.

"What?? Have you lost your mind? It's too dangerous! It will collapse the second we step inside!!! Get your ass back here, Krushnic!"

"Woose!" He screamed.

Oh my god she couldn't believe it... Now she was just terrified that something bad could happen to him. It was so damaged and nobody took care of the house in more than twenty years, the wood was probably rotten and too weak, and it was definitely dangerous.

He tried to open the large front door and turned around.

"Can you believe it? It's locked!" He laughed. “Who locks the door on a destroyed house? Do you have the key or should I go through the broken window?"

She walked next to him.

"How about you do nothing? We can just go chill to the orchard, it's late August there must be plenty of fruits and-"

He started to walk towards the patio, ignoring her comments.

"Okay, broken window it is, then."

" No, no, wait! You're gonna cut your leg, you moron! Of course I have the damn key! What a stubborn ass!"

She handed it to him reluctantly and he opened the front door.

“Yeah, that hasn't changed.” He chuckled.

They stepped inside the hall, revealing an almost intact ground floor, and when Lily saw her old house dirty and messy, but still looking the same as it was in her memory, her heart skipped a few beats, she couldn't breath anymore, and she collapsed on the ground.

Misha didn't have the time to react fast enough to avoid the impact on the ground, but he came quickly to her side and shook her gently.

"Lily!" His voice was full of panic, but he saw her eyes twitch.

"Lily, please wake up!"

She opened her eyes and saw his worried face.

“Are you okay?”

"Yes... What happened?" She asked weakly while he helped her standing up.

"I'm not a doctor, but if I had to guess I think you just had some sort of a flashback. You really have to stop knocking your head!"

She slowly walked a few steps further inside the hallway, observing everything around her.

"I... I thought it would be all black and smelly and empty... Look at that! Everything's here!"

"Well, except a few curious people and the police, nobody came here since the night of the fire. I came back but I never dared enter."

"Look!"

She stepped inside the great room where the grand piano was still waiting. She pushed a couple of dusty keys to play a chord but winced when she heard the raspy sound of the instrument.

"Ouch... out of tune."

Everything was here... it was so strange! It was like opening a door to the past. The huge boat model was still behind the sofa, the stuffed animal heads were proudly hanging on the walls... the books... the logs next to the fireplace...

Misha stepped near that same fireplace to admire the huge wooden bear that Lily's grandfather carved.

"I need that thing in my house."

"Sure. Take what you want. It's heavy though... and we can't bring that in the plane!"

"Yeah... We'll have to come back with Sasha and Darius...and a truck."

"That should be fun."

He took something that looked like a tiny guitar case.

"I think I found your first violin!"

"Oh god... Open it!"

He did so and her face lightened with a huge happy smile that reached her eyes. It still smelled as good as she remembered.

"So many memories... It's so small!"

Misha left the room to explore further in the house while she placed the violin back in its case.

"And I think I know why nobody could come up to get us out by the stairs..."

She heard Misha and ran to see what he was talking about. The first half of the wooden staircase was intact, but the top of it burnt, and the ceiling of the second floor collapsed on the lower floor, blocking the path.

"I'm gonna climb."

"Uh no. You won't."

"Watch me. I need to see your room."

"Misha no! It's destroyed! You're gonna hurt yourself! The floor won't hold!"

He ignored her, placed a table near the stairs, jumped on it and clambered to reach the next level.

"Misha! Please!"

He heard the fear in her voice so he looked down at her through the hole in the broken ceiling.

"I'll be fine. Stay here. If I see it's too dangerous I won't go."

He disappeared into the next floor's mess, and when she couldn't hear his footsteps anymore, she understood he was near the tower entrance, so she ran outside through the back patio and looked if she could see him from here.

"Misha?" She called worried.

He didn't answer, and she hated the sensation of helplessness she felt. The same feeling she had when he was half dead in her arms.

Misha knew she was worried so he should say something, but he just couldn't talk.

He made it to what was left of her old room and was so shocked that he just stood here speechless.

The ceiling and the roof were gone, half of it crashed on the floor, and half of the floor crashed down on the lower level, blocking the stairs.

Everything burnt... The walls were black, all the furniture were ashes except the metal frame of Lily's bed.

That same bed they used to share in secret... They were right on that bed's foot the night of the fire. Nothing was left... nothing... but they made it. He made it without a damn scratch thanks to her.

He stared at the spot they were when they lost consciousness, and saw a huge pile of wreckage that probably fell from the ceiling too... burning her back.

"MISHA!!!"

Still no answer... Was she supposed to go in there? She didn't hear any crash sound but she was now biting her nails. Should she call someone for help?

Misha broke down crying on the floor, realizing how close to death they stepped. When he calmed down a little, he took his phone out of his pocket and took some pictures of the room.

"MISHA IF YOU DON'T ANSWER ME RIGHT NOW I'M COMING TO GET YOU! DON'T YOU DARE DO THAT TO ME AGAIN!"

"I'm going down! I'm fine!" He finally managed to reply after he cleared his throat.

Thank god!

She waited in the backyard near the fountain and the well, and ran towards him when she saw him getting out of the house.

She didn't care how dirty, dusty and smelly he was, she ran into him and slammed her arms around his neck, holding him tight.

He did the same, circling her waist with his arms.

"Why didn't you answer right away? You scared the shit out of me!"

She wasn't lying, he could feel her body shaking. He lifted her and sat her on the edge of the condemned well, took his phone out of his pocket to show her the pictures of her old bedroom.

She took the phone from his hands and observed.

“Oh my god...” She whispered.

“Where would I be today if you hadn't saved me that night? How would I look now if you hadn't laid on top of me with your blanket?”

A silent tear fell down her face and Misha brushed it with his thumb.

“Thank you, Lily. I really wish I was the one with the scar today, I really wish I could've protected you from this... but thank you.”

She didn't say anything, she just leaned her head into the hand he still had on her cheek and closed her eyes, and another tear fell.

Misha kissed her forehead. When he pulled back, her eyes were still closed, so he kissed her left cheek. She still didn't move, so he gently brushed his lips against hers. He looked at her to see any reaction, and he saw that her eyes was shut tighter, a pained expression on her face.

He leaned forward and crashed his lips on hers one more time, insisting because he just needed her to kiss him back. He opened his mouth a little, and she finally did the same, kissing him slowly and desperately. Her hands raised to his hair, just as she liked to do when they were young, and Misha put his hands on her hips, squeezing gently.

He pushed his tongue inside of her mouth and he heard a soft moan coming from her. That was delightful. He had forgotten how she tasted like, and now that he had tasted it back, he didn't think he could get enough of it, he didn't think he could stop.

So she was the one who broke the kiss.

“We can't do that.” she whispered, resting her forehead against his.

“Why? It feels right to me.”

“Because you're m-”

“I know! It doesn't matter!” It sounded harsher than he'd wanted to. She just didn't understand...

She jumped down the well and walked back toward the house.

“It does.”

He sighed and rubbed his face in his hands in frustration.

“You coming? I think we should go see our tree.”

They didn't stop by the barns or the orchard. They were too eager to go back to their favorite spot at the pond. When they arrived near the willow tree, the sky began to be menacing, it would rain soon so they had to hurry.

“So... are you still flexible, Mr Collins? Can you still climb on it? I sure can!”

She didn't wait for him and jumped to climb on the first branch, the same one they always shared since they were kids when they wanted to talk and share secrets, away from their families.

“I'm impressed!”

He did the same and joined her, sitting on the huge branch next to her. She was sitting too, her back leaning against the trunk.

“See? Who says we're old?”

“My son does.”

She giggled and looked at the water behind them.

“Remember when we used to jump from here?”

“Of course.”

“Ew, the water is so gross now! Katie was right I wouldn't swim in it for a m-”

“I love you.”

She froze and stared at him.

Okay... no panic, this is normal, they were in the place they shared for many years, surrounded by memories, good and bad, they were here to move on, so his reaction was normal. No big deal. They were friends after all, so yeah... of course they loved each other.

“I... I do too, Misha. You know that.”

He scoffed and shook his head.

“Nice try, Lily. You know perfectly what I mean.”

She sighed deeply, swallowing the heavy lump in her throat. She wouldn't even look at him.

“We're here because we wanted to turn that page... and you just say that to me like it's no big deal...”

He took her hand.

“I really came here in order to move on... But I realize now that it's not possible for me. I don't want to move on anymore. I want you back.”

Her jaw twitched.

“This is PTSD... You saw the house and the burnt room and it brought memories back, so now you think you have these feelings back too, but you don't.”

“Okay, Doctor Freud... just look at me in the eyes and tell me you don't feel the same and I'll move on. Tell me you don't love me.”

She frowned and made eye contact. It was painfully similar to what happened in Rome and she personally hated it. She already broke up with him, it was enough.

“You're being ridiculous! Come on, Misha!”

“I'm waiting...”

“Fine! Just keep in mind you asked for it!” She cleared her throat and looked directly into his blue eyes, her hand still in his.

“I don't love you anymore. Not like that.”

He expected everything but this...

“You're lying.”

“I'm really not.”

“Why are you crying then?”

Oh damn, she didn't even notice her tears!

“Because... I never thought I would say that one day, and I hate to hurt you. I love you as my friend... but I'm not in love with you anymore. I moved on, and it's your turn now. You owe it to your family. I won't be the one destroying what you've built. I just can't... I'm sorry.”

Misha looked down at the water. Sadness was written all over his face, and she hated herself at this moment. He jumped down the tree, took her bag and walked toward the cottage at the other side of the path, where he used to live.

“Alright, one more stop and we can leave this place.”

She didn't move from the branch... she just stayed up here like an idiot and silently sobbed in her hands. When she looked up, he was far already, he almost made it to the small house. He probably needed to be alone.

She waited a few more minutes, trying to compose herself, and she finally jumped down the tree to head toward the cottage. She didn't even have the time to reach it when she saw Misha coming back already. She tried to read his expression but she couldn't.

“Misha... are you okay?”

“No... But it's only PTSD, right? I saw what I needed to. Let's go back to the hotel, I'm hungry.”

Fuck!

She thought she couldn't hate herself more but she was wrong!

They reached the car and drove back to the hotel in total silence. They didn't even share a single word. She wanted to say something, but what could she really say to him after what she just did?

Through beauty and bliss to the senses.

Come take a stroll to feel my heart and to know my mind

Walk with me safely through time.

Lose yourself in the grace of serene solitude.

let their gentleness wash over you as their flawless flowers float above the filth.

Next we can sit under the citrus tree of faithfulness.

Usually throughout the year they may be seem dormant and thorny.

but with the promise of spring their strong, soft, sweet aroma blooms to greet you.

The smile of the flower and the scent of its breath caress your nose and eyes, as if to whisper: Be faithful, trust in growth of love through waning times, for although a seed seems lifeless, it may come to be an entire orchard.

As the spring progresses and time seems not like a distance.

The flowers make their rounds and make room for the pulpy oranges. A message from God, saying: Have faith and trust for you will be lead to sweet succulence.

Just past the beyond we will take our tour to the next stop.

The fountain of Love

The unending flow that feeds the soil of the entire garden.

It is the center piece of my soul.

Decorated with the precious gems of knowledge

Sculpted with the magnificent contours of wisdom

It is the most gorgeous piece in the garden.

At the sounds of of its liquid laugh, it will excite the passions within you.

At the apex of the apparatus, you can see its fountainhead.

If you gaze closely you will see patience.

For when understanding Love: Know that patience is the fountainhead of Love and ecstasy.

Come let’s continue our walk.

I want to show you my tree garden of kindness. Abundant with colossal sequoias, expansive evergreens, and entire treasure trove of trees.

Each one meditating in peace

emanating kindness to all who present themselves.

They share their branches with all the birds and the bees.

Listen to how kindness nourishes the buzzing friendship of bees and how it feeds the carefree songs of the birds.

They give their leaves to hungry koalas

and they allow the sluggy sloth to hang loose on their boughs.

Such kindness only draws out kindness and calls for admiration.

I hope youre having a good time on the tour. But please let me show you more. It may seem long, but the soul is limitless and its bounds are unknown. So please let me show my piece of the kingdom.

Come! Look! See! There!

The plains of joy!

It’s area is covered with smiling daises.

Each is a drop of happiness. Their unity explodes into an exponentially limitless ocean of joy!

Let’s skip! Lets laugh! Lets play!

Lets run our fingers through happiness.

Lets rest our bodies and lie in the flowers. Hugged by the joyous embrace of daisies.

Lets feel the soft earth under our feet. Reassuring us not to worry about our steps. Assuring us to take in the present and appreciate love.

Our next stop will be the pond of peace.

So calm that it’s surface is a glass mirror.

In it’s stillness it takes in the canvas of the universe

only to reflect in back,

to share its exquisite chaos and turbulent beauty back to the Creator and creation. Gaze into its waters. Don't be afraid of its stillness. But understand that it will reflect the deepest and darkest parts of your soul. So that the glimmering light in you may shine in awesome brilliance. Peace

Lastly I will lead you back close to home. To the delicacy of the herb garden. Where the herbs of Self Control are growing.

I try to keep them close and tend to them dearly, but I always seem to screw them up. They take the longest to grow.

Theyre the hardest to commit to, but I’m trying, and I have no intention of failing.

Please be delicate because in storms, they are threatened by the tyrannical tempests of temptation. It runs ravenous and these herbs are easy to be uprooted.

Thus I try to keep them close, but know that I am still a man.

Know them and understand that they produce health and prosperity. The leaves of self control are delicate, yet vital.

Through this garden I tend to my soul.

Although I water and care for each plant, I pray for the Creator to bring the true increase.

Each fruit of the Spirit I pray for.

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

I pray to the Father above, to bring growth and prosperity.

I pray that He sends me sunlight of Truth, the water of Love, and the nutrients of Knowledge and Wisdom.

I will take care of my garden all of my days.

I want you to know my queen. That it is open to you. For you to visit, to enjoy, to laugh, to seek understanding, and to water and care for as well.

I give you the key to my soul for it is truly free when shared. I am here to love you.

So come whenever you please.

you know where the gates are.

Garden Projects for Early Spring

A few early preparations for the spring gardening season will bring benefits all year long.

The urge to garden in early spring is primal. Re-connecting with the earth is affirming, renewing, promising. Waking up the garden to a new growing season is about more than soil and seedlings...this rite of spring is a tonic to the gardener as well.

Early spring garden & yard tasks

• clear drainage ditches Leaves and debris gather in drainage areas over the winter. Now is the time to ensure that the spring rains will have adequate runoff. Spring seedlings do best in soil which drains well. Because vegetative growth is at a low point in early spring, this is the easiest time of year for clearing drainage ditches. And be sure to put the cleared material, usually dead leaves and small branches, into the compost. Spring compost piles are commonly short on carbon-rich materials, and every addition helps. • repair any bowed sides to raised beds. fix trellises and fencing. Soggy winter soil puts a strain on raised beds; sometimes a stake will rot and give way. Any bowed or leaning sides should be fixed now. Dig back the soil behind the bowed side and drive in new stakes on the inside of the sideboards with a slight inward lean. Push sideboards up to stakes and fasten well with screws or nails. Trellises and fencing are also easiest to repair in early spring, with less growth to work around and fewer roots to disturb. Setting new fenceposts, however, is best done after the spring rains have had a chance to drain through the ground. If the water table is too high, post holes will fill with water as you try to dig. • weed young spring weeds. mulch bare spots in beds. Any weeds which appear in your garden beds will be easiest to pull now, as the roots are shallow. Covering bare spots with mulch or ground cover will minimize the emergence of new weeds. Adding mulch to a depth of 3 to 4 inches is usually sufficient. Black plastic sheeting can also be used to cover the beds before planting as a way to suppress emerging weeds. And if you flip the sheeting over once a week you may likely find slugs which have been hiding in the bed. This is a simple way to reduce the slug population in garden beds. When adding mulch to garden beds or around the base of fruit trees, keep the mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and the crowns and stems of plants. This will help reduce rot on the stems of young plants and will protect the bark of young fruit trees. • when it's dry enough, 'top dress' beds. Top dress garden beds with compost or well-seasoned manure in preparation for planting. Resist the urge to dig the bed; established beds have a complex soil ecosystem which is best left undisturbed. Nutrients added from the top will work their way down into the soil. In early spring you may find that your compost pile is wet and does not apprea to be actively composting the materias you've been adding through the winter months. If this is the case, read our article How to fix a soggy compost pile. • early spring is the time for lime. Soils with a pH below 6.2 will benefit from the addition of lime. Dolomite is the finest grind, and is recommended. With ground limestone it will take twice as long for plants to derive any benefit from it. Ideally, lime should be added several weeks before planting. Hydrate lime, or "quick lime", is not recommended, as it can change the soil pH so rapidly that plants may be damaged. Cover newly limed beds with plastic during heavy spring rains to prevent runoff. Soil pH can be determined by using a soil pH test kit. • prepare your lawn for spring. Rake the lawn to remove dead growth and winter debris. This helps bring light and air to the soil level, encouraging the grass to grow. Re-seed bare patches of lawn. Rake bare spots firmly with a metal rake before seeding. Sprinkle grass seed into a bucket of soil and spread evenly over the bare spot. Keep well-watered until seeds germinate and the new grass establishes. Pre-emergent herbicides such as corn gluten may be applied now. • thin dead foliage of ornamental grasses and ferns. pull vegetable plant skeletons. Once new growth begins. it becomes difficult to thin ornamentals without damaging the plant. New growth will quickly replace the culled foliage. And if you didn't get around to this last fall, pull the old tomato, squash and other plant skeletons to clear the bed for planting. Plant skeletons can be added to the compost if you are sure they do not harbor any plant disease.

Vegetables and flowers

• plant early spring vegetables when soil is workable. Soil is ready for gardening once it is free of ice crystals and crumbles easily. Soil that is too wet is easily compacted, reducing beneficial soil aeration. Common early spring crops are peas, spinach, lettuces and leeks. For a prolonged harvest, plant several varieties, each with a different maturation date. Follow these crops with broccoli, cabbage, radishes, kale, turnips, new potatoes and onions. Mulch early bulbs if you live in areas where freezing temperatures hang on. • protect seedlings from hard frosts. Early spring plantings are vulnerable to hard frost which can set in overnight. If you expect a hard frost, cover seedlings overnight with anything you have on hand - an overturned bucket or cardboard box (with a rock on top) or large flower pot, a portable garden cloche, or a cold frame. If your garden has the space, and your budget allows, a starter greenhouse is ideal for starting seedlings early in the season and protecting them from inconsistent early spring weather. • be one step ahead of the cabbage moth. Once the frosts are gone, the cabbage moth may appear. It lays eggs against the lower stems of brassica seedlings - cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprout, kale, cauliflower. Once the eggs hatch, the seedlings lose vigor and often die. Be prepared to protect these crops from root maggots by covering plantings with row covers or applying small pieces of barrier paper around the seedling stem base. Maggots are more of a problem in cool, wet soils. • plant out daffodils, lilies, crocus, hyacinth and any other bulbs, Early spring is the time to set out bulbs which were forced in pots or bowls in the house. Some may bloom next spring, others may take two or three years to rebuild enough food reserve to support flowering. • divide perennials. clear and mulch perennial beds. For easier handling try to time the division so emerging shoots are only 2 to 4 inches tall. Prepare new beds for perennial flowers by spreading a 6-inch deep layer of organic matter (i.e. peat moss, compost, rotted manure) and work in deeply. Plants growing in deep, rich soil are less likely to suffer from summer drought. Existing perennial beds can be cleared of old plant debris and mulched to prevent weed growth. Mulch should be applied around, but not over the sprouting root mass of each plant. Stakes can also be put in the ground now for sprouting perennials such as asparagrus, which may need support for it's tall ferns later in the season in gardens exposed to wind. Be sure to set the stakes well clear of the root mass so as not to disturb emerging shoots.

Shrubs and trees

• prune out dead or damaged branches Prune unwanted branches of trees and shrubs after new growth has begun. Cut back any remaining dead perennial foliage from last season. Prune roses just before they start to bud out. Spring blooming trees and shrubs, however, should not be pruned in late winter; their flower buds are ready to open as temperatures warm. Azaleas, forsythia, weigela, dogwood, and other spring shrubs can be pruned. • prune fruit trees. Fruit tree pruning is best done in late winter or early spring. Prune well before buds begin to break into bloom or the tree may be stressed resulting in a reduced crop. Pick up and remove the pruned clippings, especially if you intend to cut the grass under the tree during summer. • remove stakes or relax wires installed on trees planted last fall. Allowing a little swaying of tree stems results in sturdy yet resilient plants. Thin out some branches of trees which have a history of leaf spot diseases. Pruning will improve air circulation and penetration of sunlight, which in turn can reduce the incidence of disease. Remove tree guards or burlap wraps from the trunks of young trees or shrubs. This prevents moisture buildup beneath the wrap, which can encourage rot and promote entry of diseases. • transplant any existing shrubs you want to move before they begin to leaf out. Soil conditions in early spring are favorable to transplants because the soil is more consistently moist, which helps new rooting to expand from the transplant zone and reach out for more nutrients. To transplant, use a spade to find the edges of the main root mass, then dig down and under to loosen the root ball. Dig the new hole several inches wider all around, and add soil amendments such as compost or organic fertilizer. Once the transplant is set in place, filling in around the sides with lightly compacted soil will promote lateral root growth. • apply horticultural oil sprays to pear and apple trees. Apply oil spray to pears just as the buds begin to swell and then again 10 days later to control pear psylla and pear leaf blister mite. Make a single application of oil on apple trees when a half-inch of green tissue is visible in developing buds. • also apply oil to ornamental trees and shrubs Apply dormant oil to trees and shrubs which have a history of aphid, scale or spider mite infestations. Destroying these pests safely with spring applications of horticultural oil will reduce your need for pesticides later in the growing season. • inspect your pole pruner before using Before setting foot on the orchard ladder take a few minutes to inspect the head of the pruner and the cord.
