So every summer, all the young women in my stake go to a church owned campsite for a week. They do a few hikes, swim, do crafts, and do a ton of church related spiritual stuff. They sleep in cabins and eat in a mess hall.

The young men all go on multiple ward backpacking trips and used to go to scoutcamp for a week before the church stopped doing that.

My cousin and a lot of the other yw hate girls camp because they wish they could go somewhere new and sleep in tents and spend all day doing camping stuff that is unrelated from church. Many of the ym can’t go on backpacking trips because they aren’t capable of hiking several miles with a heavy backpack.

Another problem with that system is that girlscamp is a stake activity and ym camping trips are all ward activities. This means that all of the girls in the stake know each other, but the boys only really know people in their wards.

This year, my very outdoorsy aunt, the yw leader, finally convinced the stake leadership (all men, of course) that something needed to change. But somehow their takeaway from what she said was that the boys deserved a whole stake activity and it wasn’t fair that only the girls got one.

So now instead of all the girls in the stake doing girlscamp and the boys doing ward backpacking trips, the girls are having girlscamp and the boys are doing both a stake camping trip at the camp the yw use and multiple ward backpacking trips.

But here’s the kicker. The camp the yw use is only open for one week a year. Normally, girlscamp is a whole week, but to be fair to the poor ym they’ve split that week in two. Girlscamp is three days, and then the boys get three days. Some of the wards are compensating by having other things for the girls, but not all of them. So now the girls are doing less stuff and the boys are doing more.

Even with the boys doing their version of girlscamp, they still are spending their three days very differently. Way less spiritual stuff, no arts and crafts, just hiking and orienteering and swimming and sports. The arts and crafts cabin has been converted into a ping pong cabin.

They really can’t just let the girls and boys do the same stuff.

i use my birthname even though its feminine but that doesnt really bother me since it feels pretty androgynous to me

so this summer i was on a scoutcamp and there was a hike and they put me as the leader of a group of boys too young to hike on their own so i just had to go along with them and make sure they didnt get lost too bad or hurt and so we were having conversations that you usually have with boys that age but at one point they asked my name because somehow it just didnt come up so i told them

they did the biggest double take ive ever seen my god

i had short hair and was wearing a binder but my voice isnt that deep, regardless they had thought that i was a boy

it made me so happy, their reaction was hilarious

there was once a scout camp deep in the woods where coming back from a day of swimming, hiking, horse riding, 1st-aid and other festivities you would do the final hike back to your campsite and when you looked up you'd see the river of stars, clear in the night.

Midsummer Night Art Challenge Day 6 -Campfire Tales- . .
